god fucking dammit /neu/pos
i need to stim way more and way harder.
i just got off therapy appt and realized during it when talking about how dysregulated i am so much of the time, all of the brain hyperactivity and thought hyperconnectedness, that oh man a big part of this is my brain is overstimulating itself, and then, when doing some of the somatic physical/breathing exercises, *oh my god this is just stimming and i need to stim*.
i thought i was fully unmasked, i have already been stimming lots, ive ALREADY been doing what (seemed) NATURAL and good and whole, but theres still stuff being held back, still so much, still too much, and i need to fuckin YELL and SIGH and SHAKE and THUD and SWAY and MOVE and AUUUAGAHAGAHAGUHGFHHBGGHHHhhhhh....
so yeah uh. pointing at you the viewer
we have so much consciously and unconsciously holding us back from stimming and acting weird or concerning or irritating or scary to others. you are holding back stimming more than you know. please pleaspleaseplease try and build more opportunities and methods in so you can stim more than you think you need to

Run. Get to Stiles.
Pairing: Stiles Stilinski x Hale sister!reader
Other characters: Noah Stilinski, Derek Hale
Warnings: Hunters?, blood, gun shot wounds, fear, let me know if I missed something
Summary: Hunters catch her off guard and she has to run for her life
Word Count: 1,955
Run. That was the only thing screaming out in my mind. Run or you’re going to die. Run or they are going to chain you up and torture you for information on your pack. Run or others might die.
Get to Stiles. Get to Derek. Get to Scott. Those were the next statements playing as I pushed myself as fast as I could through the woods. Get to Chris, or anyone.
Blood trickled from a wound on my shoulder, coating my jacket and soaking into the cotton of my shirt. Thank god the bullet that tore through my skin was normal, a simple hollow point that had hit and expanded into my skin, making sure my healing wouldn’t start with the offensive metal still lodged in my body.
The sky was pitch black, the moon shrouded out by dense clouds that blocked any possible light. If I didn’t have my heightened senses, I surely would have been running in circles and tripping on roots. Branches from trees were barely blocked by my hands as I ran, keeping any from scratching my face so I could focus on getting away.
“This way!” I heard a voice shout, probably looking at the messy footprints and blood drops from where I had just been a moment ago.
BANG
A scream ripped it’s way through my lungs as another bullet lodged itself into my leg, this one searing more than the last. My steps fumbled and I crashed down a drop off in the woods, tumbling my way through fallen leaves and over huge stones that sliced into my jacket, hands, and head. The bottom came all too quickly, stopping me in my place almost instantly and knocking the breath from my lungs.
I pushed back my messy hair from my face and pulled myself back onto my feet, eyes flashing as I tried to figure out what way town was. Lights flickered at the top of the hill I had just fallen down, and without thinking I just headed off in the direction that would take me away from them.
Dawn had to be approaching. My legs ached and my lungs burned from running for hours. My head swirling with everything I was telling myself. Run. Don’t stop, run. Get to Stiles, get to Derek, get to someone.
Street. You’re running on a paved road. You’re back in the city and the sun is coming up. Go, run, Stiles isn’t too far away. Get to him and call Derek. That’s his house. There’s his car, and his dads. Scream. Wake him up. Draw attention.
“Stiles!” My voice was no where near as loud as I wanted it to be. Exhaustion and the burning in my lungs from running taking its toll. My skin had to be pale in color by now. My jeans and shoes clinging to my body from the blood that never seemed to stop pouring from my wounds, hair sticking to my head from my sweat dripping down. “Stiles!” Again, I called out for the boy who was always at my side.
His front door opened and out came the sheriff followed closely by his son. “Y/N?” Stiles voice called from the front step. “Oh my god.” His dad had made it to the bottom of the driveway, stood with his hand on his hip, his gun, as he watched the road and woods behind me as I slammed into the chest of his son. My arms wrapped around Stiles, clinging to the boy as tightly as I could while trying to calm my racing heart.
“I can’t-I can’t run anymore.” One of his arms held my waist to him while the other rested on the back of my head, helping me realize I was finally safe.
Soft golden rays of sunlight began to strike through the dark sky, giving light to just how bad a condition I was actually in to the two Stilinski men.
“Honey, what were you running from?” Noah turned from the woods to look at me
“Hunters.” My voice shook as exhaustion began to seep into my body. “So many. Never seen them before.”
“I got you now.” Stiles hugged me tighter, brushing his fingers through my hair.
“You’re hurt.” Noah noticed the blood soaking nearly everything I wore. “Bad.”
I shook my head. “Jus’ need the bullets removed. I’ll be fine.” My arms wrapped tighter to Stiles, eyes dropping closed as I finally got my breathing under control. “Need help.”
“I got you now. We’re gonna help you. You’re safe sweetheart.” Stiles pressed a kiss to the side of my head before unwrapping one of his arms and helping me into his room upstairs. “Umm, ok. I’m gonna go grab the first aid kit, and some clothes you can change into. Give me a sec, ok?”
I nodded at him before he took off for the things he needed. I took this time to start pulling my blood soaked clothes off to make pulling the metal from my skin easier. My shoes and jeans were the first things to go, being tossed into the corner of his room that held an empty laundry basket. The jacket was a bit harder to pull off with how badly my shoulder burned as I pulled the fabric away.
“Woah woah.” Stiles threw his supplies down on the bed and helped pull the jacket off my arms when he saw the pain in my eyes. “Let me help.” His hands were gentle to trail up my sides and bring the cotton over my head, leaving me in my bra and underwear, both slightly red stained in a few spots. “You wanna lay down for me? So I can get the bullets out?”
A hum escaped my lips as I crawled into his bed and rested my head on his soft pillows. I could feel his hands shake and hear his breathing pick up when he caught sight of my wounds and all the blood that covered my skin. “Hey, I’ll be ok. Wanna grab your dad to get the bullets out?”
“No.” He denied, fingers of one hand resting gently on the inner side of my thigh to turn my leg towards him. “I can do this.”
“I know you can.” I reassured him. “Take a deep breath.” He did, then moved the tweezers into the small hole in my leg. I gasped in pain as he moved the metal around a little, apologies falling from his mouth as he worked. As quickly as the pain started, it was over and the bullet was pulled from my leg.
“Ok. I got one.” He pressed a handful of gauze to my wound to stop some of the blood from running down my skin. “Got one more to go. You’re doing great.”
“So are you.” A small smile crossed my lips as I caught a glimpse of his shoulders relaxing and his hands staying steady. “This one’ll be a little harder. I could feel it trying to heal around the bullet so it might need more force.”
“I-yeah, ok.” Stiles took another deep breath as he slid up the side of his bed to get a better look at the wound on my shoulder. “Take a deep breath sweetheart.” He was the one telling me to calm my heart rate now.
Just like the last wound, it burned just as much if not more. My hands fisted into his sheets as he dug for the bullet, my mind pleading with my claws to stay away and my eyes to not glow from the pain.
Stiles fingers slipped on the tweezers and pressed into my skin, a growl rumbling in my chest from the pain and remaining fear from running all night. “Sorry, I’m so sorry.” Finally he pulled the bullet out and pressed another mass of gauze to my skin, a sigh leaving my lungs as the healing finally started pulling my skin back together. “I got it. You’re gonna be ok.”
“Thank you.” I smiled tiredly to him. “Can you call Derek? I gotta warn him and I’m sure he’s worried sick.”
“Yeah. I’ll call him. You wanna take a shower?” He pulled his phone from his pants pocket. “You’re kinda covered in blood.”
I took a quick shower, blood running down the drain and being replaced with the smell of Stiles from his few products now coating my skin. His hoodie and sweatpants were sat on the counter when I stepped out, allowing me to change and bush my hair before I joined the Stilinskis in their living room.
Just as I sat down, the front door slammed open. Both Stilinski men jumped from their seats and turned towards the door looking ready to fight off any possible hunters, only for my brother Derek to be stood in the threshold.
“Oh my god.” He mumbled, rushing towards me and pulling me into his arms. “I’ve been looking all over for you.” His hands pulled my face to look at his, his bright blue wolf eyes staring into my golden ones. “What happened?”
“Hunters.” I stated, pulling away and sitting back beside Stiles, his hand coming to rest on my thigh as I pulled my legs up and into my chest, practically curling into his side. “Found me as I was leaving work. Pretty much ran through the woods all night.”
“Are you hurt?” He questioned, sitting to Noah’s side.
“Not anymore. Stiles pulled the bullets from me. Saved my life.” I smiled up at the boy I was hopelessly in love with.
“I can’t thank you enough Stiles.” It was one of the few times I had seen my brother look a little helpless. Knowing Stiles was able to save my life lifted a weight even he didn’t know was on his shoulders.
“I’d do anything for her. You all know that.”
“We need to warn the others, about these hunters in the woods. I don’t know how they are doing it, but I didn’t hear them come up behind me or even smell them before the bullet hit my shoulder. I thought they did something at first, put something in the air, but they managed to completely surprise me.” My hands wrapped around the one Stiles had on my leg, my head resting against his shoulder. “I can’t take anyone else dying. Not after everything we’ve been through.”
Losing each member of the packs ripped at my heart until it was a shredded mess in my chest. That is until Stiles came to my side and mended the tears. Sure, he had been there from the start, just like I had, but we only just realized how in love with each other we were when he was possessed last year.
“I’ll get the word out to the pack, let everyone know to not be alone and to keep an eye out for absolutely anything.” Derek had his phone in his hand already. “No one goes anywhere without someone else with them.”
“They need to know about the surprise part. Can’t be cautious if they don’t know I couldn’t hear the hunters attack.” Stiles gripped me a little tighter. “Can I stay here for a little while? I really don’t wanna be too far from you at the moment.” My eyes glanced up at Stiles.
“Of course.” He looked to his dad and then Derek. “You can stay as long as you want.” I cuddled into his side tighter. “We’ll protect you.”
It may not be easy, this fight against the people who know of us and are scared of us. But I knew one thing, as long as I had the pack, my bother, and Stiles, we’d be able to handle anything.

Eee! I'm so sorry, i started to answer an then saved to drafts and forgot you!
At what point in the process do I come up with the title?
I try to use lyrics for my titles, and some of them I had as soon as I started writing - 3 AM Wide Awake, Hold Me, My Leathers Fit Tight Around Me. Others were much harder, Driving On Down The Road got a title change after I posted it, and a lot of my wips are saved as document 1, 2 etc, which means if I'm looking for a particular one I have to open all of them!
Have I ever upset myself with my one writing?
Yes! Hold Me, Gods Of Thunder, and there is one line in one of my wips that I cannot read without crying.
A small teaser from one of my wips.
This one is a story from the Hotter Than Hell recording, a combo of Ace's car crash and a story from Paul's book where he nearly got arrested for not having his licence. For dramatic effect, I have written him as being arrested.
Afterwards no one could remember what had set it off. A bad day, a thoughtless word spoken in anger. On top of the stress of recording and being away from home for so long everyone’s tempers were frayed. Ace and Peter had both been drinking steadily since they had returned from the studio several hours earlier. Sometimes that put them in a very good mood. Today was not one of those days. A terrible fight had ensued, and Ace went storming out in a rage.
“That fucking idiot is driving!” shouted Gene at the sound of squealing tires as Ace speed off. “He’s going to fucking kill himself!”
Although Peter had been screaming at Ace just minutes earlier, he suddenly had the urge to defend his friend. “And that would make you happy, wouldn’t it!”
“Of course it fucking wouldn’t!”
Bill got between the two of them, placing a calming hand on each. “Guys, just calm down.”
Gene looked around the room. “Where’s Paul?”
What no one had noticed was that before Ace stormed out, Paul had already left. He hated fighting. He hated anger and aggression. Negative energy. Whatever it was, it reminded him of when his parents fought, and he couldn't stand it.
Driving along, radio blasting, wind in his hair, Paul felt the stress melt away. Music had always been his solace, and he had it so loud that he almost didn’t hear the police siren. Turning down the music, Paul peered ahead. Where was the cop? He could never tell which direction sound was coming from. Then he glanced in his rear-view mirror. Fuck! He’s right behind me! I wasn’t speeding, was I?
Heart pounding, Paul pulled over. Hopefully it would be a lady cop. He could try his charm on her. The officer approached. He was a man.
“Licence and registration, please,” he said.
Paul nervously reached for his wallet . . . and realised it wasn’t in his pocket. He had left in a rush and hadn’t even thought to grab it. The police in New York never cared. As it turned out LA police were different.
“I . . . uh . . . I don’t have it. I left it at the hotel, sorry.”
“Then you’re going to jail.”
“Jail?” Paul’s blood turned to ice. “I can’t go to jail.” Joking around one day, Gene had said if Paul was ever in jail, he’d be the most popular guy there. “Not looking like this.”
It was to no avail. Paul was frisked, which if he hadn’t been so scared, he would have found funny. His jeans were skin-tight, so if he had any weapon other than his love gun in them, it would have been obvious. Then he was handcuffed and pushed into the police car and taken away.
A few miles away there were no police. Which may or may not have been fortunate for Ace, as he was taking out his anger by seeing how fast he could drive the winding hill roads. And when he found he could do it quite fast, he did it again.
What's a fic idea I've had that I will never write?
I have a couple that I have tried, but are really hard. One is a self insert, me and Paul, pure smut. I've written a little, but then I think about people reading it and I get embarrassed and delete it. The other is really dark and deals with a suicide attempt, again I've written a little, but I don't know how it would be received.
Thanks for the ask!

How do you feel about kissing?
Featuring the haikyuu boys! Just some of them though lmao
Asking your best friend (Noya, Asahi, Ushijima, Tendou, Kuroo, Bokuto) how they feel about kissing
Reader is fem
Noya
His head was on your stomach as you played with his hair laying in the sunshine during lunch. A thing you normally did in the summertime for the last how many years you’ve known him. “Noya” you say softly, watching the clouds go by. He has his eyes closed but he responds “whats up?” he says sleepily and you twist his blonde patch around your finger “how do you feel about kissing?” you ask and his eyes pop open, staring up at the sky before he sits up and turns around to look at you “do you wanna kiss me?” he asks seriously and your cheeks flush, you cover your cheeks with your hands as you turn away slightly “maybe” you whisper and he laughs “OH BOY Tanaka is NOT going to believe this!” he says with a clap and you scowl at him making him chuckle “no no no, because he thought i’d have to confess to you first! He didnt think you felt the same! Now come, come here pretty girl. come here my girl let me kiss you finally! my pretty girl!” he starts to crawl over to you and you giggle trying to stand to run but he lunges and pushes you gently to your back on the sun warmed grass getouas he smiles down at you “I feel like kissing you, to answer your question” he says and then his lips are pressed to yours, kissing you like it’s the last time he’ll ever be able to.
Asahi
You clear your throat, the sound drowned out by screaming from within the gym, Hinata and Kageyama going at it again. You took Asahi outside for some air after practice ended and were now sitting on the steps to the club house looking at the stars for a moment. “So, uhm” you lean back on your elbows on a higher step “Asahi?” you ask and he hums in response “what do you think about… kissing?” you ask and he tenses. Holding his breath as he debates if he heard you right, when he turns to make eye contact he realizes he did in fact hear you right. “In general? Or.. or” he clears his throat “or with you?” his palms begin to sweat and he rubs them against his shorts. You laugh awkwardly “can i choose.. Both?” you ask quietly as you sit up straight again,
“W-well.” he takes a shaky breath “in general, i find kissing to be gross if i have to say watch someone else make out at school. B-b-but with you,” his voice gets softer “i think i’d really enjoy that” he turns to look at you and you brush your fingers across his cheek that was warm from practice and from blushing. “I think i would really enjoy kissing you too” he laughs softly, shaky from his nerves as he reaches out to cup your cheek, leaning in and closing the distance, softly pressing his lips to yours. He goes to pull away a little too soon for you liking so you whine and and lean with him, smashing your lips to his again as you try to memorize the feeling of his soft lips against yours.
Wakatoshi
“Can i ask you something Ushi?” you ask as you walk him to practice in the early morning. He’s been your best friend and neighbor for years so when you went to the same high school and had practice in the morning, it made sense that you traveled together, plus he said he wanted to make sure you were safe on the train. “You know you can ask me anything.” he states and you laugh awkwardly “yes i guess you're right” you stop when you reach his gym and he looks down at you, straight faced as always. You take a deep breath and steel your nerves “how do you feel about.. Kissing?” you ask and he stares at you for a few moments, blinking and not saying anything. You figured he was thinking so you just waited, “I think that kissing is fine in a relationship but i wouldnt know much since i havent kissed anyone before. Ask Tendou he’ll know more about it” he turns to go get Tendou but before he can bring him back to talk to you, you were gone. Ran off to your own volleyball practice feeling like a complete failure.
“Oh you poor innocent boy. She was asking you that..” Tendou grabs Ushijma by his cheeks and leans in close “BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO KISS YOU” he drops his face and laughs “she was asking, how do you feel about kissing HER?” Ushijima is silent for several minutes until at last he mutters out an “oh.”
You wait by the gate like always, your practice always getting out earlier than his. You’re messing around on your phone, setting a new ringtone, when he appears beside you. “Do you want to kiss me?” he asks and you gasp, chucking your phone into the air. “Ushijima!” you shout and he catches your phone from the air “do you?” you feel your face flush as he hands you back your phone “why do you ask?” your voice a few octaves higher from being nervous. “Tendou said you asked me about kissing earlier because you want to kiss me” he says and you laugh awkwardly, rocking on your toes as you scratch behind your neck “if i say he’s right will that ruin our friendship?” you ask as you look at his feet and he responds by cupping your cheeks and leaning down close “I’m gonna kiss you now” he says and waits for you to accept or reject him and you gasp and nod in his hands, eyes fluttering closed as his soft warm lips press against yours, sending fireworks down your spine.
Tendou
2am runs to the 24 hr gas station were a regular occurrence. You held a cherry laffy taffy in one hand and a blue slush in the other, the colors turning your tongue purple. Tendou had an apple sucker in his mouth and a cherry slushy in his hand. You finish your candy by the time you reach the park and you throw the wrapper in the trash by the entrance. You pick up your skateboard and hold it under your arm as you two walk to the top of the hill.
You sit on the bench at the top and he sits beside you, your board on the ground under your feet as you roll it softly side to side. Tendou kicks your feet and scoots closer, his thigh pressing into yours as he puts his feet beside yours, rocking side to side with you as you sit. You lean into him and sigh, your tongue was numb from your slush and your fingers were frozen, he wrapped one of his arms around you and you shivered into his warmth.
This all was normal, it happened all the time. But it still made your heart feel special, god how you wanted to kiss him.
“Satori?” you ask softly and he hums “whats up doll?” he responds over the straw he’s chewing “how do you feel about kissing?” you ask as you use the end of the straw to spoon some slush in your mouth. His head turns swiftly to look at yours and you act cool, eating your slush and being totally normal. He leans in slowly, getting closer to your face with a serious expression trying to make you break but you were used to this, you knew him. You gasped when his frozen tongue licks a stripe up your cheek “ugh you child! I should kick you off my bench!” he laughs and wraps both of his arms around you and rocks side to side “no wait don’t kick me off! Im sorry! I’ll answer your question if you answer mine!” you groan “fine! What’s your question? Just stop shaking me!” he laughs and relaxes his hold, looking down at you with a goofy grin “are you asking me this because you want me to kiss you?” he asks seriously but the little grin he had made you worry he was going to make fun of you.
your eyes grow wide and you clear your throat, suddenly self conscious and feeling stupid “I!- uh maybe yeah I was but sheesh” you try and scoot away from him, laughing awkwardly “that was stupid huh yeah. Stupid” you mumble but he wont let you scoot away “hey” he says softly and you pause to look up at him, his goofiness gone and replaced by softness you rarely got to see “you’re not stupid, pretty girl. You’re very smart.” he says and cups your cheek “i like kissing. I havent kissed anyone in a very long time” he coughs “Second grade” coughs again and you laugh, remembering that day in second grade when your best friend at the time dared him to kiss her so he kissed you instead. “I’ve been waiting, hoping, you'd want to kiss me again” he whispers as his face comes closer to yours, you hold your breath as he leans down, almost 100%, leaving just a sliver of space between you.
“You like me. How embarrassing for you” you tease and make him laugh “i love you. How embarrassing is that?” he mumbles, his lips barely brushing yours and you sigh “as embarrassing as me loving you” you say and his lips crash against yours, his tongue tasted like cherries and it mixed with your berry perfectly.
Kuroo
“KuRRooOoo” you yell sing as you walk into the empty gym, “Y/N” He shouts back as he exits the supply closet, having just finished cleaning up, the rest of the boys already in the showers.”walk me home?” you ask with a smile and he nods “of course, meet me by the gates in ten minutes” you nod and wink at him before leaving the gym, heading back to the class room you were studying in to gather your things.
“There you are beautiful” he says when he walks up and you kick your feet on the side of the wall “can you help me down hot stuff?” you ask and he nods, coming over with his hands out.
You were just friends, that's what you said when anyone asked. She’s just a friend! Is what Kuroo tried to convince Kenma. You just call each other nice things! It’s normal. But when he places his hands on your thighs, slowly running them up until they land on your hips, you think it’s a hint about his deeper feelings.
“Hop down” he says and you blush with a grin not moving. you instead move your knees farther apart, wrapping them around his waist. He raises his eyebrows and you grab his hands, moving them back down to your thighs so you can softly runs your fingers against his “how do you feel,,, about kissing?” you ask and cock your head, your hair falling over your shoulder as you looked up at him with innocent eyes.
“How do I? Feel?” he asks and you chuckles “how do i feel about kissing?” he asks again, you laugh out loud before cupping his cheeks and looking him in the eye, bringing his face close “Tetsuro” you whisper demandingly “answer” he blushes and swallows, his popular guy persona draining from his bones “i like kissing. I like you” he whispers out quickly with a nervous chuckle and you beam at him, your smile spreading as you wrap your arms around his neck “i like you too” you whisper and give him a small peck causing him to gasp before he chuckles and wraps his arms around your waist, the wall the perfect height to lean in and press his lips to yours, feeling his smile against your lips as you kiss him back.
Bokuto
“Hey Bo! How do you feel about kissing?” you asked as you leaned over to his desk “kissing is great why?” you booped his nose “just curious” you went back to your desk beside him and he looked at you for a long moment, why did you ask him that?
The rest of the day passed by slower than ever for Bokuto, he sat inside his head, overthinking why you asked him about kissing and at the end of the day, the end of a terrible practice, he had convinced himself that you wanted to kiss someone else and he’d never get to kiss you himself.
“baby Bo what happened?” you ask as you walk up to him in the hallway, he was holding the straps of his backpack as he looked to the ground “nothing. I’m fine” he said quietly, avoiding your eyes. You walk up to him and take his hands, wrapping them around your waist as you pulled him into a hug “tell me Kou” you whispered and he sighed into your hold “long day, shitty practice, just too in my head today” he whispers and you run your fingers through his still damp from his shower hair. “What happened to put you in your head? You were so shiny this morning” you ask and rub circles on his back, the people in the hallway have all but disappeared now, heading home like you will be soon.
“You’ll think im dumb” he whispers and you shake your head “never Kou, I promise.” he sighs and stands up from your hug and sighs again, rubbing his face with his hands “i thought your question about kissing means you want to kiss a lot of people” you take a beat to think of why that could make him sad and you smile softly, taking his hands in yours “and why did that make you sad?” you ask in a hushed tone and his cheeks flush “i dont want you to want to kiss everyone but me” he mumbles out with furrowed brows and a pout. You laugh and cup his cheeks “oh Kou, i ONLY want to kiss you” you say and watch as his eyes go from confusion to recognition to bright and bubbly bokuto again “HEY HEY HEY” he shouts and you laugh “i knew i had it in me” he says slightly cockily and you keep laughing as you hug him, burying your face in his chest. “I don't want to make you sad Bo, talk to me if you ever get sad because of me okay?” you cup his cheeks seriously and he nods “from now on, i promise” he says before he leans down and presses his lips to yours

Finally Home (c!Sapnap x Reader)
I let my twitter followers decide who I wrote a oneshot for, and they wanted c!Sapnap, so here it is :) Written in the span of like... Idk 2 hours?? It’s a soulmate AU where you can feel everything your soulmate feels when you get in a certain distance of them and it gets stronger the closer you get to them. I hope yall like it!!
Word count : 2,701
^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^
There it was again. That burning sensation on the palms of your hands. You didn’t understand where it came from or why it was happening, but it hurt like hell. You wondered if it would ever stop, but you doubted it would. You knew the stories all too well but figured it would never happen to you, and slowly your fears confirmed it as all of your friends got theirs and eventually found their person. A soulmate. The way they talked about how they could feel what their soulmate felt on a physical level. They would feel light brushes against their arms or bumps when the other person would be somewhere busy. All of your friends had found their other halves years ago, explaining that when it happened there was a jolt like electricity in their bodies. After all of your friends had abandoned you, you had given up hope in ever finding your person. So you travelled. For miles and miles and miles, seeing every country, village, and kingdom your empty heart desired. You had lost everyone you loved and couldn’t even find your soulmate.
Then it happened all too suddenly. If you had to guess, it happened when you got within range of the person, so you kept up your pace and travelled. It was an unpleasant sensation. It felt like fire all over your body. At first it was a small stinging, then the farther you travelled, the closer you got to this person, it grew. You would wake up in the middle of the night screaming because of cuts and wounds your other half would experience. You wished it was something as simple as the things your friends had gone through, but this was a nightmare. You wished you could meet this person once and for all just so you could give them a strong right hook to the jaw, then changed your mind as you remembered that you would also feel it.
You knew by the things you were going through that this person was crazy and potentially dangerous with the amount of wounds this person was accumulating through the weeks of you travelling, so you did your best to be delicate. Whenever you would feel a new pain, you would prepare healing potions and drink them in hopes that the other person would also feel the effects. Either that or, if it didn’t feel like a gash or deep cut, you would trace your fingers over the spot gently to sooth the other person to let them know you would comfort them. What you couldn’t stand, though, was the feeling of fire dancing around your fingers. You eventually learned to tune it out and numb yourself to it, so it wasn’t nearly as bad as it was when it started, but it was still painful and annoying.
Then it stopped as suddenly as it started. For three whole days. Three. Days. After the first couple hours of the first day you started to worry. It was rare that you got a single second of rest from this crazy asshole, but three days? Part of you hoped he wasn’t dead, but the other part was happy you didn’t have to deal with scratches, bruises, and burning. But you missed it so much that you wished the burning in your palms returned. Nothing stopped you from continuing on though, even though you had no idea if you were going the right way anymore or not. You used the pain as a guide for weeks to lead you closer, but when it stopped, you lost your physical compass. Something in your heart told you that you were still heading towards them though, so you kept on, this time faster and without much sleep. You wanted to make sure this person was ok, and fast. You watched all of your friends leave you, you couldn’t have your literal soulmate leave you as well.
When the third day ended and you were about to fall asleep, you felt it. The smallest little touch to your cheek you had ever felt. It was out of the blue and you had never felt such a touch come from the other person, so it woke you up instantly. You laid there for a moment, the stroking on your cheek so soft and faint that you wondered if it was even the person at all. Slowly, you lifted your hand to your other cheek and caressed it. The feeling on your other cheek stopped, but the feeling of a hand still stayed there. That’s when you knew it was them. They knew you would feel it, but probably weren’t expecting you to return the feeling to them. The stroking started again, so you stroked your other cheek for them as well. Then it hit you. Why had you never thought of it before? After weeks of knowing you had a soulmate out there, it just now hit you. You sat up from your bed in the little hotel you were staying at and tapped your leg. The feeling on your cheek stopped then you felt the same tap on your leg again. You smiled and pressed your hand down for a second and felt more pressure a couple seconds later.
Then you started. At first it was a smiley face, then letters one at a time to write to the person. You asked their age first. Then you felt the pressure of the person writing back. “20”. You drew yours back, then they drew a smile to confirm they got it. You asked their name. “Nick” they wrote back. Then you wrote yours. You got as much information as you could from this small communication as possible so you could find him easier. After your small exchange, you got up, got dressed, packed your things and headed towards a location called “Dream SMP”. You had seen it on maps before, but it was so far away that you thought you would never get there. You had already crossed oceans, rivers, and mountains for this man, but now you had a new fire to feel. A fire burning so deep in you that it ignited in your eyes. You used all the money and resources you had to get there. You bought boats and horses for the days leading up to your arrival.
After over a month of travelling, you finally made it to the outside borders of what was known as the DreamSMP. The streets were full and bustling with life. Most people smiled and greeted you as a new member, fully accepting you the second you set foot on the land, others scowled or threw hateful words your way, possibly thinking you wouldn’t hear, or maybe they hoped you would so you would leave. You asked around about this person “Nick” and got an overwhelming response of happy chatter and protests of anger, so you left as politely as you could to search on your own.
You felt like it would take forever to find this other person if all of the streets and businesses would be this crowded and overwhelming, until you came across one man standing at the edge of a river with his eyes closed and a smile on his face. His fluffy brown hair flipped up in the front and slightly waved in the breeze, the colors he wore matching his vibe completely. You approached him cautiously at first, but felt comforted by the aura he gave off. You cleared your throat quietly, so as not to startle him, and he opened his eyes slowly to greet you, the lightest shade of blue you had ever seen. He gave you a soft smile and waved you over, so you complied.
For a second, you wondered if this was him, but you took note of his soft, clear looking skin and the lack of electricity as you neared him. When you got next to him, he pointed across the river to a very ornate village sitting on the hills surrounded by flower forests. “Have you ever seen anything so beautiful?” You stared in awe at the mushroom buildings and statue and smiled at him. “I’ve travelled a long way to get here and passed hundreds of kingdoms, but this tops them all,” you replied. He made a noise of agreement and smiled, content with your answer. “Well, tell me, new face, how did you make your way to Kinoko Kingdom, and why are you here?” There was no malice in his voice as he asked and you could tell he was being friendly so you knew you wasn’t being standoffish. “I came to meet my soulmate,” you answered. His eyes went wide and met yours, a look of shock on his face. “Th-that’s you?!” You looked at him, furrowing your brows. How did he know? As if to read your mind, he continued. “I knew he was expecting someone, but, wow… I mean… He’s gonna want to meet you now. He literally hasn’t shut up for weeks about you.” You stammered for a second as he grabbed your hand and started running, barely giving you any reaction time to keep up with him. He was fast and energetic and you liked it. He seemed friendly and bubbly and his touch was comforting.
He weaved in and out of streets and occasional bystanders watching the two of you with wide eyes and gaping mouths. You took it these people didn’t see many new faces, seeing as they were small in numbers. He didn’t slow down until both of you were panting in front of a giant cherry blossom tree in front of the biggest library you had seen. You could hear a loud voice echoing out of the open hole, acting as a doorway. The man next to you put a hand on your shoulder and you looked over at his grinning face. “I should explain before you get in there… My name is Karl and Sapnap, or Nick, is my fiancé. Now before you get worried, we’re in an open, poly relationship and he’s talked to me about all of this and I am 100% welcoming you into our little family.” He gave you a warm smile that reached his eyes so you knew he was being sincere.
A booming shout broke your thoughts and you felt a pain in your toe that almost made you fall over, then loud laughter erupted. You smiled and shook off your foot as Karl motioned you inside, and that’s all you needed to run inside. The space inside was open with books lining the high walls. There was a staircase to your right, a mushroom in the far back, and a balcony above your head. There you saw him. At first he stood there laughing with the other man in front of him, not realizing you were inside, so you stared. You felt something like fire dancing across your skin lightly as you watched him with wide eyes. He was more beautiful than anyone you had ever seen. He had his jet black hair tied into a messy, low bun at the back of his head, a scar across the length of his face that went across the bridge of his nose. He had a light dusting of freckles across his rosy cheeks and the most piercing eyes. The man in front of him caught onto your stare and nudged the man, pointing down at you from their spot on the balcony. When his eyes met yours, a shiver went up your spine and your skin felt hot, like you were now encased in a cocoon of fire. For a moment you both just stared at each other, not being able to move, until you felt a pair of hands push you gently from behind.
That’s all it took to move you. You took off towards the stairs and took them two at a time as he ran to meet you on the landing. You collided into the biggest hug that knocked the wind out of your lungs and almost sent you flying backwards, but he kept you steady. Your eyes welled up for a moment and you laughed into his chest. He smelled like a campfire, fir trees, and old books. He was so warm and your body fit his so perfectly under his arms. You heard footsteps coming up the stairs and a soft touch to your shoulder, a small hum coming from Karl behind you. “Thank god you’re finally here. Sapnap literally would not shut up. He always talked about how soft you were with him when he knew how hard it must have been for you. Weeks. Weeks.” Sapnap reached an arm out to punch Karl, but he dodged easily since Sapnap still hadn’t let you go. You chuckled and closed his eyes as he put his arm back over your shoulder and squeezed you closer to him.
“I can’t believe you’re real,” he whispered into your hair. He squeezed him and smiled. “You thought I wasn’t?” He sighed and relaxed his shoulders. “I thought you would hate me. I’m so reckless and get hurt all the time. How could anyone want me if they feel what I feel?” You pulled back to look him in the eyes and you gave him the most genuine smile you had ever had on your face. “You’re stupid. Of course I would be here. And I will stay here. I’ll take care of all your bumps, scrapes, and stabs. The pain means nothing so long as I know you’re ok.” His pointed ears turn a bright red and he averts his gaze to the floor, so you bring your hand to his cheek gently. At first he flinches, but soon closes his eyes, sighs, and leans into your hand, his lip slightly quivering from such tenderness.
“I do have one question, though.” He hums, not opening his eyes. “Why do my palms always burn? Do you just, like, constantly sit around a campfire?” He chuckles and slowly lifts his head, eyes opening to look at you. He pulls back from you slightly, keeping one arm around your waist as he watches his hand, then back to your face to watch your eyes on his hand. In an instant, his hand is surrounded by fire, the burning in your hand starting up. He must have liked the look on your face because he lets out a snort and then starts laughing, all while you stand there in awe at the power he held. “Holy shit… And… And that’s real fire? Just like that?” You look back at him and he gives you a shy smile and a nod of his head as the fire goes out. There was a sparkle in your eyes that he was absolutely enchanted by and he hoped he would get to see that for the rest of his life. You let out a small huff of amazement and smile brightly. “You are the most amazing person I have ever met,” you say quietly as you watch his features soften as he’s left speechless.
“Oh get a room,” the guy behind Sapnap says, his voice thick with an accent and sarcasm, the sound of a smile in his words. Sapnap looks at the man and points at him, shooting off a mini fire at him. His shirt catches for a second before the man screams and smacks himself to put it out. You laugh as you watch the exchange and Sapnap looks back at you, thinking of how beautiful your laugh sounds. “Well,” Karl starts. “We have a lot to talk about! Ooooooh this is so exciting! We need to know more about you!!” He grabs both of you and pulls you down the stairs and out to the pond next to the tree out front, the sun finally setting over the hills, casting a gorgeous, fiery glow on your soulmate’s features. You couldn’t wait to see what their life was like. To kiss all of his scars and tell him how amazing he was. To run your fingers through his raven feather-looking hair. Oh how you loved this.

a/n: hi hi! I'm so excited to finally get this chapter to you guys. I'm sorry this literally took a month. i was taking two writing-intensive courses this summer and i was just burnt out. i hope you enjoy it!
Part One Part Two Part Three Part Four Part Five Part Six Part Seven Part Eight Part Nine Part Ten
A grunt escapes you; your contorted body weighs down the top of your suitcase as your damp fingers slip off the metal zipper. The unforgivingly humid weather provokes the heat of your efforts, adding to your discomfort. There’s urgency in your fingers, your frustration growing at each failed attempt to close your suitcase.
“Y/n! Hurry up!” Atticus shouts from outside of the Hermes cabin. As the zipper slips out of your grasp once again, you throw your head back in annoyance, hand coming up to push away wisps of hair that fall on your face. A familiar chuckle comes from the corner of the room, grabbing your attention from the wooden ceiling. Connor sits on the side of his bed; his comic book forgotten beside him as you fussing over your suitcase seems to be more interesting to him.
“It’s not funny,” you grumble, sitting onto your heels.
Connor rises from his bed, shrugging his shoulders with a smirk. He kneels by your suitcase, “It’s kinda funny.”
The corners of your mouth almost curve up, but you stop yourself, opting for a roll of your eyes instead.
“What the hades do you have in here?” The tips of his fingers turn white as he pulls on the little piece of metal. You shift your weight to the corner he works on, but it helps him as much as it helped you earlier.
“My brother’s left a bunch of books behind, so Lou Ellen and I split them up. She’s taking half, and I take the rest. We’ll study them and then exchange notes.” A hum of acknowledgment comes from Connor’s lips as he inches the suitcase closed.
“You guys are a bunch of nerds.” You squint at the other with a playful offense, and he laughs at your hardened features. “I bet you guys study more than the Athena Kids,” he teases.
“There’s a lot to learn,” you say simply, watching as he brings the zipper to the end. He leans back on his heels, and you move to take in the half-empty cabin.
The sight of the Hermes cabin being this tidy was foreign. There aren’t any sleeping bags on the floor; the belongings of your many cabin mates didn’t clutter the walls or the corners of the room as they usually do. It’s funny. There are always complaints of the cabin being too small, but it appears bigger without the mess.
“Will you and Atticus visit throughout the year?” Connor’s expression is hopeful. As the last day of camp approached, Connor’s wishes of a full cabin all year round became more apparent. The shift from a max-capacity cabin to a half-empty one must be a tough transition for social people like Stoll Brothers. If it were you, you’d be counting down the days of everyone’s departure.
You ruffle his brown locks, “we’ll probably stop by for, maybe, spring break?” Connor’s hopefulness begins to sag, and you frown. Spring break is pretty far from now, huh? “Depending on how mortal life treats us. You know, we might be back soon,” you add on quickly, hoping to lift his smile.
Though you wish to go home, you’re dreading all the supernatural activity you’ll have to deal with once you leave. Your father works tirelessly to protect the house, but entities always manage to get in. And if they can’t, they don’t mind hanging outside.
The hopefulness that faded from Connor’s face restores, and he gives you that famous mischievous smirk. “Well, I hope the ghosts bother you guys enough to come to visit early.” His tone is playful, but you can tell he meant some of his words. You laugh hesitantly and nod, rising from your suitcase.
“I’m glad you’re that eager to see us again.”
You thank him as he leans down, lifting the heavy suitcase from the ground for you.
“Y/n!”
“I’m coming!” You tug on the handle, glancing at Connor. “The year will go by fast, and soon this cabin will be bursting at the nails with new unclaimed people. Atticus, Lou, and I included. Anyways, you have your brother. You guys will find something to entertain yourselves.” You nudge him as you make your way outside.
“Yeah, you’re right. You will write to me, yeah?” Connor asks.
“Of course. I’ll send you snacks that you can’t buy at the gas station.” Connor’s arm pumps back to his side, hand in a fist as he hisses a “yes.”
The corners up your mouth hesitantly pull up as you push open the cabin door, finding Atticus and Travis talking on the porch. For the past week, the anticipation of your departure was killing you, but now that it was time to leave, you feel gloomy.
You knew the cause of your heavy heart was the uneasy tone of your going. Living day by day with the intention of moving on was hard. Because every time you look at their newly occupied beds, the sinking feeling in your chest returns. Every time you find yourself wandering in the forest, the memories of your often chaotic magic lessons flood your mind. You remember when Alice misaimed her wind spell, shooting Alabaster far into the trees. While you all rushed to check on him, Alice burst into tears because she was convinced she killed him only to approach a laughing Alabaster who shouted, “Right on!”
Every time you were in the Arts and Crafts center, you remember how you, Sage, and Lou would do Tarot Readings for the campers and how you would argue with the Apollo kids when they insisted your tarot cards are as honest as fortune cookies.
At the armory, you remember how Ambrose ran into James so hard, he stumbled and knocked down half of the shelves of weapons.
In the courtyard, you remember how Ernest, horrified by heights, produced the highest pitch scream he possibly could as he rode a pegasus for the first time under the persuasion of Alabaster.
All these memories, whether hilarious like your spell mishaps or bittersweet like when you and your sibling’s group hugged around Sage when she cried about her abusive stepmother, held a special place in your heart. Because the times where you laughed and cried together reminded you of the genuine bond, the family that was ripped away from you overnight.
“We'll see you guys soon. We should go. Argus will leave without us," Atticus says, relieved that Argus is still waiting for you on top of Half-Blood Hill.
“Have a safe trip, guys,” Travis says, patting Atticus’s shoulder before reaching out his arm and giving you a short side hug. You grab your things, hastily saying a final goodbye, and soon, you and Atticus are trudging up the hill.
Your free hand pats the pocket of your shorts, calming your worry of forgetting the necklace at the cabin. What rests in your pocket is a raw tourmaline crystal, now smooth with the help of Beckendorf, encased in a silver spiral cage.
You and Atticus carry protection crystals all the time, and they help with staying out of the radar of monsters and entities. After hearing Percy’s many stories of monsters bothering him, you figured he couldn’t be too cautious. Then after finding a spell in Alabaster’s many books that can dim down a demigod scent for a while, you decided to make him an enchanted necklace to wear.
You pack into the truck with Atticus right on time. Atticus sits in front of you, chatting away with Cecil as you make yourself comfortable in the back row with Ambrose. You frown; among the three other campers in the van with you, Percy isn’t one of them. Argus peeks into the back, doing a rough headcount. Great, now you’ll have to wait until next summer to give it to him.
Right, when you were going to chastise yourself for not giving him the necklace yesterday when you were done with it, a distant voice shouts, "wait!"
Argus halts in the middle of closing the sliding down and turns around. He shakes his head with disapproval while opening the door all the way, revealing out of breath Percy.
A smile widens across your face as he gets into the back seat with you, and you nudge Atticus’s seat.
"See, I told you we wouldn't be the last ones here.” You side-eye Percy, seeing the corners of his mouth pull up in amusement.
“Some people just don’t know how to get to places on time, huh?” Atticus says, and his eyes flicker to Percy before giving you a wide grin.
“Didn’t sleep in today, firefly?” There is a playfulness in Percy’s voice, and you smile proudly,
“Nope, not today.”
“It’s a miracle,” Percy mutters, loud enough for you to hear, and you scoff. Atticus snickers and nods in agreement.
“We were supposed to gang up on him, not you two on me.” You stick your tongue out at Atticus, and he returns the action.
“It’s more fun making fun of you,” Atticus teases.
“Rude,” you mumble with a slight smile on your face. The two boys chuckle, Atticus turning more into his seat to tell Percy something about a new Marvel movie. Excited voices fill the van as the other boys join in the conversation, and soon they are debating if Batman is really a superhero or just a rich guy in a suit.
You had to admit, as the conversation became more passionate, you were pretty entertained, but as you catch sight of Camp Half-Blood growing farther in the distance, you’re reminded of the ache in your chest. It’s only a temporary leave, but when you return, things will never be the same, and the false hope of your siblings returning has been proven to be foolish.
☆’.・.・:★:・.・.’☆
Following a ghost dog while weaving through the hustle and bustle of Grand Central is almost impossible. Atticus’s hand is latched to the straps of your bookbag as you move through people, trying not to roll your eyes at the way Ambrose turns to bark as if he was reprimanding you for being too slow. Easy for him to say when he can walk through walls and people.
“Track 28,” Atticus reminds you as your eyes find the number written on the tan bricks of the high walls. You make a sharp left towards the entrance of another hallway, ignoring the groans of a grouchy bystander that you may have cut off. The next hallway you enter is a lot less crowded than the main floor, and you slow down your pace.
“Where do you guys live again?” Percy asks as he jogs up beside you. He had insisted on walking you guys since his train departs in the same station.
“Sleepy Hollow.” Percy scrunches his face as if he recalls something, and you smile, waiting for the question everyone asks when you say you live there.
“Have you seen the headless horsemen?” Percy asks, half-joking. A snort leaves your throat, and you look at Atticus, who’s equally amused.
“Oh yeah, plenty of times.”
“Really?” Percy asks, his eyes wide with surprise, and you laugh.
“No.” Your response makes his face drop comedically fast, and Atticus bursts into laughter. “It’s just a story, but there’s a lot of history there, so the place is crawling with ghosts. We’ve met the guy who wrote the story, though,” you mention.
“No way,” Percy squints his eyes in disbelief.
“I’m serious! Atticus and I take walks in the cemetery sometimes. We leave drachmas on the graves of newly passed people, so their venture into the underworld is smooth, but some people like to wander.” You shrug. “Washington Irving is one of those people.”
“Cool,” Percy says with such enthusiasm that it makes you smile. Ambrose turns around and barks again, standing at the golden entrance that leads to the grey tunnel lit with fluorescent white lights where your train waits beside the concrete platform.
“He always rushes us,” Atticus complains, and Harvey lets out a coo that sounded close to a groan as if he agreed with him.
The marble floors turn to concrete as you enter the tunnel. The blue and silver train on your left hums as it sits dormant in its station. Ambrose trots ahead, peaking into the doors and windows to find an empty cart to occupy.
As you follow a few feet behind him, your fingers fiddle with the necklace resting in your pocket. You’re regretting not giving it to Percy earlier because, for some reason, the idea of giving it to him now was more intimidating than if you had done it earlier on the bus.
Ambrose decides on a cart, and Harvey jumps off Atticus’s shoulder, squealing happily as he follows the hound while completely ignoring a worried Atticus trailing close behind.
"I, uh, made this for you," you sputter, the words coming out fast like vomit. Your fingers pull out the crystal necklace abruptly, and you put it in the palm of his hand. "It's black tourmaline. It has protective qualities; good at keeping negative energy, negative auras, things like that. I put a spell on it to dim down your demigod scent for a while, so you catch a little bit of a break. It'll last for a few weeks, maybe a month or two if the spell caught on well."
You bite your lip as Percy studies the necklace resting in his hand. "Wow, really? Thank you, Y/n. This is great.”
Nervous, you shift on your feet under his bright, smiling orbs. "It's no problem. After everything that happened at camp, I think it’ll be good for you to have one.”
Percy nods, his features softening all of a sudden, and he shifts. “Thanks for protecting me,” he says, and you feel heat rush to your cheeks. “Getting rid of that thing became more than you expected. I felt bad that I couldn’t help. Swords aren’t really useful when it comes to demons, huh?”
A small laugh of agreement leaves your lips. “It was nothing. I wasn’t going to let you be tormented by that thing if I could help it.”
An announcement echoes in the hall, reporting the departure of your train in a few minutes. You glance over, catching Atticus, Ambrose, and Harvey with their noses practically pressed against the window as they witness your interaction with Percy. The amused smirk on Atticus’s face makes you roll your eyes; he’s definitely going to tease you when you get on the train.
"I should go.” You face Percy again, catching him securing the necklace around his neck. The stone rests a few inches under his camp half-blood necklace. "Thanks for walking us here. Be careful getting home."
"You too…” he trails off, noticing your brother looking out the window. For a second, he seems as embarrassed as you do and a nervous chuckle leaves his lips. “Your brother is waiting."
“He’s so annoying,” you complain, and Percy’s next chuckle doesn’t sound as hesitant this time. "Well, uh, bye, for now, puddles,” you tease, butterflies dancing in your stomach.
"Bye, for now, firefly."
You both awkwardly wave at each other before you turn around, getting on the train with Atticus. With your gaze fixed on the floor, you plop into the seat next to him. You don’t even need to look to know he is smiling teasingly at you.
"How cute,” he teases, nudging your shoulder repeatedly with his own.
"Ew, shut up.” You shove at his shoulder, your nose scrunching as he flails his arms against yours as if you were fighting. Atticus chuckles and a string of sounds come from your familiars as they join in to tease you, and you couldn’t help but laugh too.
☆’.・.・:★:・.・.’☆
The suburban streets of your neighborhood are filled with the chirps of birds and bugs and the sounds of cars that pass every once in a while. There isn’t much conversation between you and Atticus as you trudge up the hill leading to your dead-end street.
“Gods, I hope we can get inside without being seen,” you manage to say through your heavy breaths, lazily holding on to the handle of your suitcase as it rolls behind you. Ambrose’s nose nudges the back of your knees as if to encourage you, but it’s more cute than helpful.
“There’s no way that we are. Janie and Celia are always sitting on the neighbor’s porch.” You grunt in acknowledgment, knowing that Atticus is right. The neighborhood ghosts are friendly enough, but their company can be annoying.
As if on cue, you hear a delighted squeal from ahead the moment you reach the top of the hill. Two ladies wave their handkerchiefs in the air a handful of houses away.
Celia, the tallest of the two, wears a steel blue dress with a high neckline and a big bow tied on the base of her neck. She has a jacket button closed over her corset with a frill at the end of her sleeves. Her skirt is floor-length and complete, with ruffles cascading down its entirety. And, of course, no one can miss the high-crowned hat decorated with fake flowers, bows, and crimped fabric as it all sits on top of her blonde hair in an intricate updo. Janie, her sister, wears the same style of dress and headpiece only in a burgundy red. The resemblance between the two makes it clear that they’re siblings close in age. They have the same high pinched noses that jut in the air; both of their faces are regal like those in renaissance paintings.
You’ve seen them around for as long as you can remember. They were two sisters who died of scarlet fever a year before their first courting season, which was a big deal according to their constant moaning and groaning about it.
You look ahead, your expression blank as if their high-pitched voices didn’t fill the streets and they weren't racing toward you with their skirts in their hands.
“My word! It’s the end of summer already?”
“Atticus, you’ve grown taller!”
“What a handsome boy! Y/n, your shorts are too short, don’t you think?”
“It’s quite bizarre how such clothing is acceptable these days.”
“How beautiful you’d look in a gown like ours!”
“Where’s Alabaster?” Janie asks, attempting to circle her arm around Atticus’s, but he raises his arm to push back his damp hair to avoid the contact. She scoffs at his rejection and sighs.
“Alabaster was sweeter to us than you guys!” Celia pouts. Your heart sinks a little at the mention of him. Of course, they’d ask about him, and of course, your father will ask too.
Gods! Your father will ask about him.
You had forgotten you’d have to break the news today. These past few weeks, you debated whether or not you should do it by letter, but it felt wrong. It was only right that he’d find out in person.
“We know you can hear us,” Janie huffs.
“I hope dad doesn’t work late tonight. Do you think Grandma will be waiting for us?” You ask. As annoying as it was having spirits follow you, it was a little fun ignoring them when convenient for you. Atticus nods,
“Probably-”
“No one’s home,” Celia cuts in, and Atticus pretends to shoo a bug away to conceal that he paused from her interruption.
“But I don’t think dad is going to take long. He said his last lecture ended at three,” Atticus continues, and you nod.
‘I hope grandma came by to visit. I missed her.”
“I just said no one’s home.” Celia snaps, and you press your lips together to hide your smile.
Atticus sighs. “I know, I’m dying for those moon cookies she makes us.” At the mention of those cookies, your stomach grumbles. You hope Celia was wrong because you’re suddenly craving your grandmother’s cooking and her company. Her funny stories and voice that’s always a little too loud for the indoors never fails to cheer you up. As short and frail as she is, her voice and personality could fill a room.
“Me too,” you say shortly.
“Hello?!” Celia waves her handkerchief in your face, and you persisted in ignoring her. Suddenly, a sound of disgust comes from Janie as she brushes off her skirt.
“Y/n, retrieve this monster of yours!” She squeals as Ambrose bites the fabric of her dress, tugging on it with a growl.
“Damn this dog,” Celia shouts, attempting to shoo him away, but yelps in surprise as Ambrose snaps his jaw shut near her hand. “Get this thing under control! Y/n!”
Your hand comes up to cover your smile even though the two are shuffling behind you and a stifled chuckle comes from Atticus. The sound of Janie’s heels on the concrete becomes louder as she rushes beside Atticus again, and your smiles drop. The sight of your house comes into view, and you tilt your head confused; your father’s car is parked in the driveway.
“You said no one was home?” You say out loud, and Celia gasps beside you,
“Now you speak to me?” She snaps, halting as you approach the fence. She stands tall, hands folded in front of her elegantly as Janie’s expression is gleaming like a child on Christmas. “Your father requested to keep it a secret, so I obliged his wishes. He canceled his last lecture today to make you both a meal. What a lovely man.”
Your hand finds the latch for the white picket fence as you smile at the familiar narrow victorian-style house ahead of you. A path of cobblestone leads you to the brick steps of the small porch.
Your home sticks out from the more modern American houses that surround the area. It’s an antique, a snippet of history, as your father likes to say. The house is a russet brown only because the bricks are so old they’ve darkened in color. The house accents such as the window trims, porch overhang, and columns are copper, and the hipped roof has brown tiles that look like fish scales. Beside the porch, the bay windows from both stories stack on top of each other, and above the porch roof is the dormer that’s a part of your bedroom.
Gods, you’re yearning to be in your room. You just want to pull out your Murphy bed from the wall and bury yourself in your sheets. The idea of being in bed puts a pep in your step, and you are careful to avoid the salt ring that surrounds your house.
A butterfly passes by your face, flying to the bunchberry bushes your father has planted in the front garden. Among the grass, there are various flowers and herbs that your father grows in the summer. You’ve inherited many things from your father, but his green thumb isn’t one of them. He takes his gardening seriously while you can barely keep the cacti in your room alive.
“Enjoy your meal! Come talk to us one of these days. We missed you two!” Janie shouts after you as you make your way up the stairs. You turn around, Atticus smiling at them.
“We missed you, girls, too,” he says as if he didn’t want to admit it. Janie squeals something about how handsome his smile is, and you scoff, amused as you grab the doorknob.
Once you push the door open, you're hit with a rush of deja vu. The history channel plays faintly in the next room as you take in the home you’ve missed dearly.
There are two bookshelves against the wall on your right, a wide ledge with pillows under the bay windows. A messy coffee table filled with letters and stacked with books sits in front of the comfy reading nook, letting you know that your father was recently hanging out there.
There is a brown mahogany staircase that ascends upstairs to your left, and right beside it is the altar for your mother. A statue of her rests in the middle of the rectangle table covered in a black table cloth. On top of it lies the many offerings for your mom. Herb-dressed candles burn beside bowls of fruit, bouquets, a crystal enamel wine glass filled with alcohol, feathers, and other things. You ignore the altar as you put down your stuff beside the door, following Atticus as he takes off his shoes.
“Kids?” You hear your father call enthusiastically from beyond the foyer, and you persist forward into the entryway ahead of you.
“We’re home!” Atticus announces as he enters beside you. Ambrose barks making a beeline to the right and behind the kitchen counter. He jumps on your father with so much force he stumbles back.
“Gods! Why does he look even bigger?” Your father exclaims through a laugh, fixing the round glasses that threaten to slip off his nose as his other hand grips Ambrose’s paw. He yelps in surprise as Harvey's claws rest on top of his head, clinging to his hair to steady himself.
The warmth and smell of home fill your senses as you catch your dad’s gaze. “Well, come here! Are you going to hug your pops or what?”
You rush over with Atticus. Both of you hug your dad tightly on either side of him, and you smile as he presses a kiss on your temples. “I missed you guys so much!”
“We missed you too!” The smile on your face falters as he looks up, scanning the archway as if he was waiting for someone else. You shift, not ready to be faced with the question, and you peer around his body to look at the food on the stove behind him.
Your father notices your interest, and he chuckles. “Come on, let’s eat. You guys came right on time.”
You shuffle through the kitchen with Atticus, making your way to the rounded table at the end of the kitchen.
“Dad, what have you been up to?” Atticus asks teasingly, and your father perks up.
“I've done a lot of things to keep me busy. I volunteered to teach summer classes while you were gone. I’m reading this book with a fascinating perspective of the shift from Paganism to Christianity in Rome. It’s an amazing read; I highly recommend it. Though, I don’t quite agree with it.” Your father hums thoughtfully. “Oh! And I bought gnomes for our garden! And the thrift store had this little house and this old lady figurine! I put it on the porch. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but she’s the official guard of the door," he declares proudly. "And…” He twists and turns before heading to the bookshelves in the living room area. He grabs something from the shelf then he showcases a cartoon Dobby bobblehead with wide arms. A high-pitched cackle leaves his lips. “It completes our collection!”
“Woah! Where did you get it? We went to three different places for it, and we couldn’t find it.” Atticus matches your father’s excitement, and you snort at the two.
“I went to a mythology convention in Boston a few weeks ago. There was a game stop across the street from the center, and I thought, ‘why not?’ I went in, and I saw this little guy by the register.” Your father is giddy as he nudges the head and watches it jiggle in his hands.
You think of what your grandmother’s reaction would be if she saw all the things he bought on his trip to the thrift store. She’d definitely complain. She always said that even growing up, your father had a liking for knickknacks. On your shelves and counters, there are always little trinkets lying around. It even extends to the walls, a variety of paintings and diagrams are neatly hung beside each other. From the state of your house, it’s clear your father is a maximalist in its purest definition.
“Wow! That’s awesome!” Atticus reaches out his hand for it as your father brings over his entire collection of Harry Potter bobbleheads, the toys huddled in his chest before he places them on the dining table. “The whole gang can hang out with us for dinner.”
“I hope they like pasta,” Atticus comments, lining them up as your dad retrieves the pan of food.
Your stomach grumbles at the sight, and you’re quick to serve yourself as Atticus and your Dad talk about anything and everything. You guys discuss what your grandmother has been up to, how your father’s classes were going, which led your father to ramble so much he formed a tangent on top of another. The conversation was going so well that you were sure he wouldn’t ask about your summer, but you had assumed too soon.
“So enough about me! How was Camp?” Your father chirps, and you shift in your seat.
You smile with confidence to hide the wariness you felt. “It was great!” You figured if you keep your answer short, you could move past it quickly.
“Yeah, the usual. Fun as always,” Atticus adds.
Your father’s eyes flicker between the two of you, and the first thing he notices is the way your smiles don’t reach the rest of your face.
The clanging of metal utensils on glass plates fills the room as the both of you fixate on your food but neither take a bite. The camp was never a touchy subject. The sudden unwillingness to speak about it makes his eyebrow cock up in suspicion. His eye averts to the empty dining chair beside you and the dinner place settings that remained untouched. Alabaster was supposed to join your return home. At least, that’s what he had assumed.
“Did Alabaster decide to stay at his foster home?” There’s caution in his tone, and he’s taken aback at how both you and Atticus tense up. The clings of metal halt abruptly, and slowly, you move to glance at your father.
“Dad, something happened at camp this summer.” Now, it was your turn to have a tone laced with caution. Alabaster lived with you for months and quickly became a part of the family. Your father saw him as his second son, and you were afraid to break the news that he may never see him again.
“What happened? Did he get into trouble?” You frown at the sudden edge in his voice. Atticus shifts beside you,
“He took the others to go fight for the Titan Lord.”
“What?”
“Mother came to speak to him and told him that it was best to fight for the other side since their chances are better,” you say slowly. “They left at the end of July. Only Atticus, Lou Ellen, and I stayed at camp.”
Your father’s expression darkens, grief written all over his face. “And you haven’t seen them since?”
You shake your head, not wanting to delve into the details. “I don’t think we’ll be seeing them again in a while and not in the best circumstances.” Your father nods, understanding the implication in your words. “Mother promised that she’d take care of them if they fight for the other side. I didn’t want to go; it wasn’t right.”
“That must be why everything is rotting,” your father mutters more to himself. You furrow your eyebrows.
“Rotting? What’s rotting?”
“Our offerings to your mother,” he clarifies. “All the fruit I leave on her altar goes bad in a few days. The flowers wither quickly too. The garden, in general, hasn’t been doing well either. I didn’t understand why.”
Your focus returns to your plate. Suddenly, you weren’t that hungry anymore.
She must be angry, you think to yourself. A part of you wanted a sign from her to let you know if she was bothered you didn’t join. When the sign didn’t come, you assumed she didn’t care; that, in a way, you were dead to her. It didn’t dawn on you to ask how the altar or the garden your father dedicated to her was doing.
“Can I be excused?” You strain, your face a little hot, and you’re not sure if it was from your anger or from the tears you’re blinking away.
“Of course.” The warm smile on your father’s face fails to budge the dread you’re feeling. “You can be excused as well, Atticus.”
You miss the way your father and Atticus exchange looks as you stood up. There wasn’t a verbal agreement, but Atticus stands up tall, determined to make you feel better. He trails behind you, and suddenly, he slings his arm across your shoulders. “You know what’s one of the things I missed at camp?”
“What?” You ask, trying to ignore the heavy feeling in your chest.
“Beating you at Tekken,” Atticus teases. Your lips curve slightly; his playful nature manages to brighten up your mood a little bit. “Let’s play. I’ll go easy on you, but I’m sure you’ll still lose regardless.”
“You’re on,” you nudge him, and Atticus chuckles, walking ahead of you and up the stairs. Your hand grips the railing, and you walk up a few steps before halting, and your eyes find the front door.
“You don’t get it!”
“I don’t.” You shrugged, amused at the way Atticus’s eyebrows knitted in disbelief. He ignored you, grabbed the remote, and played the Star Wars movie again. You groaned, seeing the slanted letters move up the TV screen. “Atticus! I can’t watch this!”
“Why not?!”
“Well, first off, my dyslexia won’t let me read that quickly, and if a physically written prologue is needed before a movie… it’s not a good movie!”
“How dare you!” You threw your head back as a laugh bubbled in your throat. The exasperated look on his face was too funny. You had no desire to watch these movies, and you figured if you bothered him enough, he’d give up trying to show them to you. The shrug of your shoulders made him scoff. “Just watch it!”
A huff left your lips, and unwillingly, you returned your gaze to the screen. Suddenly, a hollow knock came from the front door.
“It’s late,” you said, but Atticus was too caught up in the beginning battle of the movie to pay any mind to you. Rarely did you get visitors, definitely not past midnight on a Friday. Cautiously, you rose from the couch and moved toward the door.
Rain erratically hit against your curtain-covered windows; the wind and cold made the walls around you creak as they adjusted. Whatever waited for you at the door, you just wished it was a person, not a weird ghost or monster. Your finger latched on the side of the curtain, allowing you to peek through the glass of your front door.
A gasp left your lips. Alabaster, soaked from the ruthless rain outside, was the last person you expected to see. But even though you didn’t expect him, you had an inkling as to why he was here.
Hastily, you unlocked the door and flung it open. “Al?” You sputtered; his green orbs were surrounded by tired eyes and puffy skin.
“He died this morning,” he strained. Your expression softened, and before you could say anything, Alabaster stepped forward and hugged your shoulders tightly. The raggedness of his breath, the shutter of his body, sent your chest a weight of sorrow. You couldn’t imagine being in his shoes and losing your father to a long battle with cancer at 14. Tears threatened to spill from your eyes; the person you looked up to the most was breaking down. You never thought he would need your help for anything, but it seems that you were wrong. “I’m sorry. You guys live the closest to me, and I didn’t know where to go-”
“It’s okay,” you interrupted. “Oh, Al, I’m so sorry,” your voice cracked, hands rubbed his back as a sob left his lips. A creak of a floorboard caught your attention, and you turned to see a confused Atticus emerging from the living room. With a sad look, he understood what happened, and soon his expression was mimicking yours.
“I’ll wake dad and get clothes,” he said, then rushed upstairs.
Your father didn’t even hesitate to help Alabaster, opening the doors of your house to him. In his greatest time of need, the three of you stood beside him, and overnight, he had a place in your home and in your heart. The three of you spent so much time playing video games, getting into trouble around town, learning magic. All the good times you and Atticus shared with him, were they really worth throwing away to fight with Kronos? You realize now that his departure was never only a betrayal to the camp but to you, Atticus, and your father, and you couldn’t help but think perhaps, you guys didn’t mean as much to him as he meant to you.
A shaky sigh leaves your mouth at the thoughts persistent to ruin your mood. The desire to leave camp was to avoid all the things that reminded you of your siblings, but now that you returned home, you realize that running away isn’t as easy as you thought.

Goddess (Orestes x Reader)
GODDESS
(Hi. I wrote an Orestes story - it started as a joke about the way Apocalypse says “my goddess”, and then I was like “oh man I want Orestes to call me his goddess” and then as usual, I don’t know how, but this happened. It’s rather different than most things I write, but I quite enjoyed writing it and I hope you like it. Comments, likes, and reblogs always appreciated!)
Word Count: ~4400
Summary: Orestes is a constant in your life and has a particular way of constantly reminding you.
Warnings: Mentions of character death (briefly described but not graphically.) Implied female reader. Definite probable historical inaccuracies taken for poetic license and dramatic effect. ANGST (I made myself cry while I was writing this.) Christians doing morally void but historically accurate things. Fictional timelines.
When you are four years old, your parents leave everything they’ve built in Rome - their jobs in the palace, their lives in the city, your father’s position on the council -upon the orders of the Emperor and move to Alexandria. Your father’s new role is to assist in turning that city into a bastion of the Empire, to help strengthen the government and support the supremacy of Rome. Your mother is to be a gentle guide to the women, in hearth and home and higher society. And because you are theirs, you go with them.
They meet with the prefect upon your arrival and he welcomes your family. He is bright and cheerful, yet loud and pompous and booming, stern but wise, and while he is a kind man, his volume frightens you. You cower behind your mother’s skirts, steadfastly clinging to her and refusing to join in any pleasantries.
Another woman suddenly appears, a small boy with curly hair and bright dark eyes holding her hand. The boy regards you curiously and asks why you won’t come out and say hello. His mother tells him you’re shy, while your mother encourages you to release your death grip on her gown. Finally, after much coaxing, you relent and she pushes you gently towards the little boy.
His mother says you should go play in the garden while the grown-ups talk, and he reaches a tiny hand out to you, wide-eyed and smiling. His name is Orestes, and he is six.
And when you take his hand with a shy little smile, his voice comes out as a whisper and tells you he thinks you’re a goddess, and he drags you towards the garden to show you the little blue flowers that dot the grass, and you believe him.
***
When you are eight years old, one day you finish your chores early and decide to spend your extra time in the yard, weaving some wildflowers together into a chain while the mid-afternoon sun warms your shoulders.
You are quite happy to be alone and not around the grown-ups for now; they’re so loud, sometimes too loud. You crave the quiet, seek it out often, and you bask in it.
Until a rush of dark curls and bright eyes tears past your house, into your yard, and grabs you by the hand, knocking your flower chain carelessly to the ground. He insists you come play with him on the hill nearby and with a squeal of indignation, you let yourself be dragged along behind him.
Your ire over the discarded flower chain is soon forgotten as your squeals become laughter as you roll and roll down the hill together, grass and dirt sticking to your robes and tufts sticking to his unruly curls.
When you tell him he looks silly, he tells you he doesn’t, and you insist that he does and he protests that he doesn’t. And so it goes back and forth and back again, until you push him or he pushes you or someone pushes the other and you both go tumbling down that hill, end over head over feet, your descent only stopped by a patch of mud at the bottom.
He might be the son of the prefect, and he might be your best friend, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t an enormous brat sometimes.
For a minute you’re both panting and red-faced and near tears, until he starts to giggle and you can’t help but join in, and only laugh harder at his outraged gasp when you hit him square in the chest with a chunk of mud.
And on the way back to your house, when you’re worrying your bottom lip thinking on how to explain to your mother why you’re covered in dead grass and damp bits of dirt, your robes most likely ruined, he tells you with the kind of confidence only possessed by a boy of ten years that everything will be fine, because you are a goddess and brave and strong, and you believe him.
***
When you are twelve years old, you hear of the school that Hypatia is running, because Orestes tells you about it when he starts going. You don’t like that he’s doing something without you. You don’t like being left behind and left out and you want to go to this school too.
Your mother would easily say yes, but your father is reluctant, and it’s not that he thinks a woman shouldn’t learn philosophy and how to read and do arithmetic; it’s more that enough other people in the city do think like this and he is convinced it will not be safe for you.
You care little for your safety. All you want, all you desire, is to be part of this group of scholars and to go to this school and learn. And what danger can possibly be there, when a woman is the one in charge?
So you beg and plead and bargain with your father, until a boy - now a young man - with curls like nighttime and eyes nearly as dark and twinkling with stars, steps in and says he’ll watch over you during your classes, and your father gives his permission. And so you start attending Hypatia’s school.
And when the older boys, boys who were nearly men and should know better, start to bully and deride you for desiring knowledge, when they taunt you and steal your scrolls and yank the ribbons from your hair, he steps in and tells them in no uncertain terms to leave you alone. Neither of your fathers, especially his, are particularly thrilled with the tussles he gets in on your behalf, or the black eye that one petulant snipe Cyrus gives him when he connects a punch when Orestes isn’t properly paying attention.
You frown at him as he sits in a chair next to the washbasin, a clean wet cloth clutched in your hand. He winces as you clean the blood from his cheek and gingerly probe the bruise swelling around his eye.
And when you softly ask why he’d do such a stupid thing, he tells you that even a goddess needs a hero to protect them sometimes, and even though you think him entirely ridiculous and heat comes unbidden to your cheeks, it makes you giddy to believe him.
***
When you are sixteen years old, you watch the boy with the wild ebony curls and liquid chocolate eyes fall in love with a girl. Only it isn’t a girl, it’s a woman, and you realize he’s been doing it for years.
Ever since your first day in the new city, he has always been by your side and you by his, an inseparable duo. You thought that would never change, but here you are, finding yourself forced to watch your best friend slowly but surely let his heart be ensnared by your very own teacher.
All he can talk about now, it seems, is Hypatia and her philosophies; Hypatia and her scrolls and the amazing things she is currently reading; Hypatia and her outlandish theories on the universe and the stars. Always Hypatia, all things Hypatia.
You never knew you could hate someone as amazing and wonderful as Hypatia.
It doesn’t seem to matter that his attentions are not equally returned, that she never fully indulges his lovesick whims and overreaching attempts to gain her attention. She continues to treat him as a student, and outside of class possibly even as a dear friend, and he continues to pine.
One afternoon you’re among the stacks of scrolls at the library, trying to find the parchment necessary to complete an assignment Hypatia has given you. You honestly would rather not find it and not even bother finishing your assigned work right now, and you must have some kind of look on your face because he takes the scroll you’re clutching from your hand and leads you to a mostly hidden nook in the room. And he stops talking about Hypatia for a moment to ask you what is wrong.
You want to tell him you miss him, that you want him back, that he’s making a mistake, but you can’t, you don’t. It takes a bit more coaxing, but you finally tell him you’re lonely and you wish there was someone you could find, someone you had to love as much as he had his person, he smiles and tells you that one day you will, because you’re a goddess and the right person will be pulled to the love and light you always emit. You smile back weakly and blink and look away and you want nothing more than to believe him.
***
When you are twenty years old, the library at Alexandria is destroyed.
It happens on a sunny afternoon not unlike so many others that have passed before, when suddenly the doors are broken down and the Christians rush in and the chaos ensues.
You’re sitting at a table with a quill in your hand, carefully writing your thoughts on a piece of parchment, when you hear the shouting in the entryway. And before you know what’s going on, shelves are being knocked over, papers tossed into the air like so much confetti, scrolls being thrown left and right. The air is beginning to smell acrid; you can see a few people setting small fires in some of the stacks.
The windows above you shatter as others throw rocks and even a chair, and you look around wildly for a way out. You don’t know which way is the right way to go, or even if there is a right way to go.
Everything is madness.
A pair of arms suddenly shoot out and grab you around the waist and your scream pierces the air like the horn on the top of the lighthouse trying to guide a ship to shore. Instead you realize you’re trying to drive this ship to its ruin, to free yourself from its depths with wildly swinging elbows and kicks, until you hear a familiar voice shouting your name over the ruckus.
You take in your assailant, all frantic curls and impossibly wide, dark eyes, and collapse into him in relief. Orestes tells you that you need to go, you need to get out, and to find both your fathers in the nearby council chambers and they’ll know where to go, where it’s safe. You ask him to come with you, but he shakes his head.
He tells you he needs to help save as many of the books and scrolls as he can, and you tell him to give you all you can carry and when you run, you’ll take them with you. So he loads your arms full to bursting, and when a rock flies by inches from your face and you drop the items at the top of the pile, he ignores that and pushes you roughly in the direction of the side exit. He says you must leave now, and he’ll be behind you before you know it.
He presses his lips to your temple ever so briefly, spares you a pained smile, and says you’re a goddess for the small bit of assistance you are giving.
As you run for safety, or what might be further peril, you spare a glance over your shoulder and see him helping Hypatia grab as much of the library’s contents as they can, and you don’t have another second to spare on deciding whether or not to believe him.
***
When you are twenty four, it’s your wedding day and everyone tells you this will be the most joyous day of your life so far. Your mother helps you dress in the softest, most expensively beautiful gown you’ve ever owned, and one of your sisters weaves a crown of laurels for your hair. Another sister makes a chain of wildflowers to wind around your wrist. You have never felt as beautiful as you do on this day.
Your father comes to the door of the chamber where your preparations are taking place, to let you know that the guests have all arrived and the groom is nearly ready, and it is almost time. He gives you a kiss on both cheeks, a gesture not common from him, and tells you he will be waiting out by the garden gate when you are ready. Your mother and sisters each kiss your cheek and leave as well, giving you a moment to yourself to gather your thoughts and emotionally prepare for the ceremony.
The door opens again a few minutes later and you turn to face the person behind it, Your eyes go wide, confused, as you take in the man before you. His dark curls are smoothed back and elegantly styled, his robes are regal and dashing, and his eyes are bright and nervous.
You tell him he shouldn’t be here.
He tells you that he knows, but he can’t help it, he has to see you. That he has been thinking of you all morning, wondering how beautiful you look, how happy you must be, and he just had to see you before you walk down the aisle to take your vows.
You bite your lip and tell him, again, that he shouldn’t be here and you can’t stop your voice from shaking. You turn your head away and look anywhere but at him.
And he repeats that he knows this, and he knows it’s wrong, it goes against all protocols, but he can’t help himself, can’t stop thinking that this is the last time he’s going to see you, see your smile and maybe hear your laugh, might be the last time your eyes can gaze upon each other and the last time he can hold you in his arms as his best friend.
You can’t think of a single thing to say to him, and even if you could, you’re certain your body will not cooperate.
Because he is not the one you are marrying. No, this marriage was arranged by your father and the Emperor, and there is the overwhelming chance that you must go back to Rome, and if you and your new husband leave Alexandria it is not likely you will ever return.
This might be the last time he can tell you that you shine with a light brighter than all the heavens, that you are beautiful and he hopes you will be happy, and you truly are a goddess among mortals.
And so Orestes does. He kisses you softly on your forehead, staying there a bit longer than propriety suggests, and quietly slips from the room. And you can’t see for the tears swimming in your eyes, and you want with all your heart to believe him, but you can’t help but find his words hollow and realize this will be far from the greatest day of your life.
***
When you are barely turned twenty-five, there is a knock on your door in the middle of the night. Perhaps knock is not the correct word, it’s more of an insistent pounding, and you swear under your breath at what could possibly be so important to rouse you out of bed at this unacceptable hour.
You pull a robe over your nightdress and open the door, and all the air leaves your lungs.
Four centurions are standing on your stoop, with a man who looks vaguely familiar; is he a general, maybe, or a captain? You can’t remember where you’ve seen him before, but it doesn’t matter, when he greets you solemnly and begins to speak, and tells you that your husband will not be returning from the front.
You did not return to Rome, as had originally been decreed. You stayed in Alexandria after your marriage because skirmishes had broken out along a few of the empire’s borders, and your new husband was called to action to fight for his ruler and the kingdom. Deep down, you could not have been more glad of it, for though you were born there, Rome had not been your home for over twenty years, and starting a new life there with a new husband would not have made it any more so.
Your knees give out from under you and you consider for a moment that you should be crying, but you aren’t really sad and it strikes you as odd, but you can’t force the tears to come. You love your husband, in a way, but you’re not sad that he won’t be coming home. You’re relieved, and the instant that thought hits you and sends a jolt through your body, you start to laugh. The general, or captain, or whoever he is and his guards look at each other, then at you, and back to each other in utter confusion as you continue to giggle.
It all happens in mere seconds, and you’re sinking to the stone floor beneath, and a very familiar voice, one you have not heard since the day you were wed, tells the guards to stand aside and strong arms catch you before you can tumble completely.
His hair is wild and curly like he was just pulled out of bed himself, and his dark eyes shine with worry and compassion, and he asks you if you’re alright, and this is what finally breaks you from your laughter and brings wetness to your eyes.
Orestes holds you as you cry into his chest and you don’t see the pointed look he gives to the captain and the guards, nor do you see them pull back enough to close the door and wait outside.
You don’t know how long you sit there on the floor in the front hall, or how you’ve possibly gotten his robes that soggy, but eventually you calm and the thoughts roll through your brain again. You are crying because someone has died, you realize this is true even if you’re not so very sad it was your husband. You’re crying because it was your husband and now there will be the mourning period you must dutifully attend as a grieving widow. And now that you’re a widow, eventually you will be expected to take another husband, if one even dares to want you.
And you’re crying because the one reason you were glad to stay in this forsaken city - in the Alexandria which had become your home - the one reason you hoped every day to lay eyes on again and every night resigned that you never would, was suddenly here, his arms wrapped around you and his voice whispering words of comfort into your hair.
You’re not sure when he picks you up and carries you back to your bed, carefully laying you on your pillows and pulling the sheet up to cover your shoulders. You’re not sure how long he stays, holding your hand and brushing stray tendrils of hair from your face. And you’re not sure how long you drift in and out, emotional exhaustion finally catching up and pulling you into nothingness, but before you fade out completely, you feel his thumb gently brush the remaining tears from your cheek, and feel the soft press of his lips on your forehead as he calls you a goddess and tells you to rest.
And as you finally give yourself to the twilight, you aren’t sure if you imagined it, but you choose to believe him, and you cling to it.
***
You’re not sure when it happens, to be honest. Time starts to blend together after that, you just know that you’re older and that it happens, and it isn’t right and it isn’t moral and it isn’t fair. Not to anyone involved, not to the city, not at all.
Hypatia has died, been murdered in the temple at the hands of those who profess themselves to be righteous saviors, brutally stoned and ripped apart as she stood there, proud and defiant to the end. How anyone could do such a thing to another human, especially one such as her, is beyond your comprehension.
It only gets worse when they burn her corpse on a pyre in effigy in the middle of the agora.
Word comes to you of the horrible events, and your first instinct is to find him, the way he found you, came to you when word of your husband’s death made its way back to the city. You set down the parchment you’re scribbling on the desk in your room and grab a dark cloak, partly to conceal yourself and party to ward off the slight chill from the wind.
You make your way to the prefect’s palace but you’re turned away at the gate by pair of surly-looking guards, and giving your name, and then your father’s name, and then the fact that your father reports directly to Rome makes no difference to them. They have been told to let no one in, and let no one out.
No one except the person you’re looking for, apparently, because somewhere in the aftermath you discover that Orestes is nowhere to be found.
No one knows where he’s gone, and no one knows when he left, just that it was sometime between Hypatia being murdered and the fake funeral pyre. He had words with Cyril, someone told you, and then after that, no one knows.
And the Christians take over the city, much like the library so many years ago, and more people are burned at the stake, more people are murdered, more progress is halted, all in the name of what is right and what is true.
They will kill you, too, if they find you, or find out you’re looking for Orestes. It’s been years since you’ve really been in his presence in anything but the smallest of ways, especially in public, but you know there are still enough people who know how close you were. And if they know you used to be close, you know they won’t hesitate to come after you the same way they came for the philosopher.
So you make inquiries as discreetly as possible, ask the gossips that litter the merchants’ stalls in the most innocent way possible, like you’re just a curious citizen asking what’s happened to the rule of order in the city. You even ask your father, once, but he doesn’t reply and his stony gaze makes you certain to never ask again.
And you bury yourself in scrolls and reading, in star charts and theories; in anything, really, that will take your mind off everything that is happening and your lost prefect. Your lost friend, your best friend.
The man you truly love, even if it’s taken you years of self-doubt and missed chances to fully realize and admit it, and now, perhaps do something about it.
One day as you’re sitting at your desk, quill in hand and head in the clouds, you think of something. Something that may be nothing, but it comes to you in a flash and you have an idea of where to go, where to find him, somewhere that few others might know.
You carefully pack a bag with some clothes and supplies, and a crudely drawn map that you sketch from memory and hope you’ve gotten right. It’s been so long since you were there but you’re fairly sure you remember the way. You know that Orestes would remember.
A long day’s journey and a fitful night’s sleep take you into the next day, and the afternoon turns into dusk when the hillside comes into view. It is not the same hill you tumbled down more than once when the two of you got into a scrum, but it’s the one that you would go when you could both sneak away and no one would notice for a few days, and you’d stare at clouds by day and the stars by night.
There is an outcropping set back from the hill, in the base of the mountains nearby, that a person wouldn’t see if they didn’t know where to look. You’d found it one day during a particularly vicious thunderstorm and taken refuge in the cave there, and you’d both commented on how someone had clearly found it once before you, for it was somewhat set up as a living space, with some mats and blankets and a few rations left on makeshift shelves. Anytime you were on these excursions and it would rain, or you simply wanted to be out of the sun, that was where you would go.
And you hope against hope that this is where your answer lies.
You crest the hill and make your way to the foot of the mountain and you can’t help but smile, just a little, thinking this is where he would have gone, should have gone, as his name means of the mountains. In his abandonment, his escape from the city, could he have taken it literally? You’ve known him so long and it feels like the kind of thing Orestes would do.
The hovel comes into view, and you drop your pack, because he does too. Tending to a fire at the mouth of the cave, his back turned slightly to you, his curls a glorious disaster, and he’s grown a beard since last you’d seen him. It’s a look you’ve not seen on him before, but you quite like it, although you consider for just a moment you’d like any look on him at this moment, because he is real and he is standing right in front of you.
The sound of the pack hitting the ground makes him turn, and his dark eyes shine in the firelight, and he looks at you for long moments but doesn’t say anything. Orestes just stares at you, disbelieving, like you might be some kind of mirage or a trick of the light or even some kind of wicked spirit sent to torment him, and so he just stares.
Until you breathe his name.
He blinks once, and his face is suddenly full of hope and relief, all the tension and disbelief of the previous moments falling away, and your heart soars to the heavens and thumps ever so boldly in your chest, and your smile threatens to crack your lips, and the tears fall freely as words finally leave his mouth.
“My goddess.”

Identity crisis
Pairing: Itadori x Reader
Synopsis: Itadori has night terrors and convinces himself he is responsible for Sukuna’s actions, you tell him that he’s not.
Word count: 1,161
CW: Mentions of massacre and violence, attempted suicide (unintentional)
_
It’s happening again. The uncanny encounter of wraiths trespassing his mind; the blurry images of phantoms guarding every corner of these four forlorn walls. He can’t seem to break out of this intoxicating cage no matter how hard he tries. The karma of his liquidation was deteriorating him into a nobody, a forgotten soul.
Who could he even beg for help to? This arena is abandoned, the only living creature here being him and the ghosts, if they counted.
He begins to wonder if he even deserves help. If he genuinely committed massacre, then it’s only fair he stays locked up in this cage, withering away in the darkness.
“Did I do this?” he debriefs his palms, almost like they contain the answer.
He starts to shout and yell at the mayhem, at the detrimental confusion, at the sight of him murdering thousands of innocents. He witnesses a sudden illusion of him replacing Sukuna on the throne, above the mountains of corpses piled up by his feet.
What was real and what was fake?
He didn’t know. He didn’t want to know.
“Please stop!” he yells a final time before sprinting out of his stance.
He’s immediately greeted by a worried you, planting your hands on either side of his shoulder which were previously there to shake the boy awake. You watch as his cold sweat trickles down his face, and you notice how he is gaping at you anxiously whilst trying to recollect himself.
You stroke his back in silence, acknowledging that he wasn’t in the right mind to speak of his problems yet.
Yuuji progressively calms down and lays back down on his forbidden pillow. Truth is he is still scared of getting sucked into his hallucinations again. Albeit drained from sleep deprivation, he endures the lethargy just so he wouldn’t have to face the repetitive cursed images.
He lies awake, like always, glancing at the peaceful rise and fall of your body cocooned in his arms. He settles a single gentle kiss on your forehead before getting lulled to sleep by the steady beating of your heart.
“Thanks for staying by my side.” he mumbles towards your sleeping frame.
In the course of time, he manages to catch a good night's rest.
_
The next night he tries the same strategy. He pulls you into his embrace and the both of you fall asleep together as per usual.
All was tranquil until he got lured into the same outcome: his hallucinations. The endless cycle repeats itself in his mind, shaking him into utter distress. Only this time he didn’t cold sweat or quiver in his sleep, rather he started sleep-walking.
Rubbing your eyes, you wake up to the noise of cumbersome movement, unwarily assuming that Itadori must have woken up from his night terrors again. You saunter up to him in the darkness, still not concentrated on your surroundings.
“Yuuji,” you call out with a yawn. There was no reply, so you got slightly nervous that something he dreamt stole away his ability to formulate words again.
“Yuuji?” you repeat, but he continues to walk further out the balcony, his back facing you.
You follow him quietly, confused as to why he was ignoring you. He didn’t show any signs of anger either. Surely you haven’t done anything wrong.
In due course, his hands wrap around the cold metal railing as he reaches the edge of the balcony. You smile to yourself at first, verily believing that he wanted to just catch a breath of fresh air outside.
“It’s a pretty view, isn’t it?” you comment, and he resumes his ignorance. This time you finally notice something was off. Yuuji wasn’t even angling his head towards the sky at all, he was staring straight ahead. There was nothing to admire straight ahead, apart from a dark slope of groves from a nearby hill. But the sky was far more mesmerising than a couple of paltry bushes. So what was he seeing that you couldn’t?
To your horror, he begins to climb over the railing. You dash at top speed, pulling him back towards the safe landing and shockingly, he resists. He grunts at the void in front of you, and for a while the both of you play a heated game of tug of war.
Alas, he forcefully shoves you off of him, regarding you as nothing but an obstacle. You fall down with a loud thud, squealing at the pain that has probably caused a bruise at your ass.
Fortunately, Itadori snaps out of his unintentional suicide attempt at the recognisable sound of your squeals. He hurries back down to see you whimpering in pain, knowing he was entirely responsible for it.
You look up to see Yuuji crying, overwhelmed by the fact he tried to kill himself amidst his asinine nightmares and hurting you in the process of it. Realising that he hurt you only made him believe he is inferior to society even more.
Sure, the poor boy had muttered random things in sleep to do with death before, but never has he gone to the extent to actually committing suicide.
Which meant that this time, his dreams were so malign, it triggered him to do something of this kind.
“There were women, children even. Their screams were cramming my ears, making me wanna tear them out. Oh god. Oh god!” he slams his palms over his ears, possibly envisioning them dying in front of him for the nth time.
“D-did I really k-kill everyone?” he asks, crouching over in guilt.
He half expects you to confirm his thoughts and leave him for the toll he was putting on you. Obviously though, you listen in and console him from crying. You finally understood that he was spectating Sukuna’s memories in his dreams, which is why he’s been muttering words to do with death. This whole time he’s been convincing himself that he is partly to blame for Sukuna’s actions.
“Yuuji.” you coo, caressing his damp cheeks, “Shh, it’s not you, it’s Sukuna. You haven’t done anything wrong, baby.”
With desperation, he grasps onto your hand firmly, rubbing his face against it. You give him a mirthless smile, relieved that you got the truth out to him.
“It’s gonna be okay. I’ll be here, I promise.”
You direct the attention towards the network of constellations above you, telling him all about the sight he missed. You make light jokes about how he was more focused on the lame trees rather than adorning the galaxy above, and luckily, he laughs a little. The both of you watch the midnight masterpiece together, counting aimlessly at the stars specked across it. He chuckles as you trip over your numbers multiple times, restarting from square one over and over again.
“Fuck Jennifer Lawrence, I don’t deserve you.”
“Itadori, I’ll have you know that you deserve the world. And don’t say that, Lawrence herself might just get jealous.” you wink.
He grins, nuzzling his nose into the crook of your neck as you continue to count the stars to humour him.

Change
Kantoph Mondangst here we go! I'll probably have more to add to this before it's posted on ao3, just a heads up :)
......
“What are you doing?”
He said nothing as he kissed her neck and gently rubbed her stomach while she cut vegetables for dinner. They weren’t unwelcome gestures, in fact, she quite enjoyed the attention. Still, Toph had tasks to complete and she couldn’t have her boyfriend cling to her like this for the next six or so months. So when he didn’t stop kissing her neck and rubbing her stomach, she feigned being exasperated and once again commented on his antics. “Don’t you have something better to do?”
“Nope,” he replied quickly, grinning into her neck. His hands gently wrapped around hers and coaxed them to release their hold on the knife and vegetables, and once she did, he turned her around to face him. “I have nothing to do except kiss you and say hi to our little baby badgermole all day long.”
“That baby badgermole is barely a baby right now,” she teased.
“Nonsense. I can tell already.”
“Are you calling me fat??”
“Please Toph. You’re perfect the way you are.”
“That’s not a no, Hotshot.”
He said nothing, but leaned his forehead against hers and swiped his thumb over the small swell in her belly. Normally, such close quarters and cheesy gestures would’ve had Toph complaining until the man stopped, but with Kanto, it was okay. In fact, she enjoyed it. Loved it, even.
His hair tickled her forehead as he stood there with her, leaning on the counter. She could practically feel his mind reeling with thoughts, and one of them he thought aloud. “You can actually feel the heartbeat, huh,” he quietly remarked.
Toph chuckled. “Yeah, ever since Katara said that’s what the echo was, can’t stop hearing it.”
“I wish I could feel it.”
She teasingly clicked her tongue at him. “If you weren’t such a lily-livered earthbender, you probably could.”
“Hey!” he playfully shouted as he wrapped his arms around her, effectively ‘trapping’ her. “Some would say I’m a pretty good earthbender.”
“Pretty good doesn’t cut it with seismic sense, Hotshot.”
He grumbled and buried his face into her neck, and she breathed out a laugh as his towering figure huddled over hers. They stood in their kitchen, content with the silence and the intimate moment they shared with one another. Pretty soon, those moments would be limited, so there was no need to rush. And it was strange how soon things would change. One moment, they were two, the next, they would be three. A change that while they had months to prepare for, would still be rather sudden for the both of them. For that, a wave of apprehension overwhelmed Toph. The idea of motherhood was distant, and she wasn’t sure she’d ever be prepared.
It was as if he knew what she was thinking, because he commented on the very same idea.
“Funny,” he began. “A year from today, our lives will be so different. And the year after that will be different, and so will the year after that.”
The comment seemed straightforward, but it left Toph curious. She had only told him last week that she was pregnant, and while he had been ecstatic then, there was that fear in the back of her mind that this wasn’t what he wanted. She swallowed thickly and noted, “You say that as if it’s a bad thing.”
“Not at all,” he reassured her quickly. “If anything, it’ll be amazing and perfect. I just mean, it’s crazy what can happen in a year.”
“I suppose,” she pondered.
Toph meant to say more, but she refrained. Perhaps it was the uncertainty of the change, or the weariness she still felt about becoming a mother, or a combination of both. Change could be good, but she feared it wouldn’t be all perfect like he dreamed it would be.
He seemed to be reading her thoughts once again. “Don’t worry,” he began, “I’m going to be with you every step of the way, and you’re going to be a great mother. The very best mama.”
She could hear the smile in his voice, and as quickly as her worries came, they disappeared. Her response, however, was filled with sarcasm and sass for their continued banter. “I feel so much better knowing you’ll be there to hover all day,” she jabbed. “And of course you’re not worried about being a dad. You’ll be a natural.”
“True,” he replied, mimicking Toph’s dramatic tone. “But that’s only because we’re gonna have a baby girl that’s gonna be just like you. And I know you like the back of my hand.”
Toph scoffed. “How do you know that??”
“A father’s intuition.”
“Well, my motherly instincts say it could be a boy. And if he’s anything like you, I know you like the earth beneath my feet.”
“Oh yeah?” he jokingly challenged. “What happens when I pick you up from the ground and you’re not on the earth, huh?”
His hands found her waist and did just that. He lifted her up and set her on the counter, her feet losing the sense of the world around her. Toph laughed at his antics, and he chuckled with her as her legs wrapped around his waist. “I’d hit you until you put me back down,” she threatened, thumping his chest with her knuckle.
Kanto breathed out a laugh. “I suppose I deserve that.”
She smiled at him while his thumbs smoothed out the wrinkles on her shirtfront. Her hands found his face and traced out the marvel and joy etched on it. Things were perfect, even with change looming over them. Oddly enough, it didn’t seem so bad with Kanto around for it, despite what she thought moments ago.
He looked up at her. “I know you’re still worried, but I’m really looking forward to what this year is gonna bring us.”
His heart beat with hers, and his hands were warm and gentle and reassuring, and fear was far from her mind. All she felt was joy and excitement with him.
So she didn’t hesitate to respond, “I’m looking forward to it, too.”
~~~
She dreaded this day. She wanted anything but this day to come.
But the days came and went with the wind, and a year had passed since she felt his heart beat in time with hers, a year since his warm hand was in hers, a year since she heard this deep, calming voice.
She hated today. It reminded her how much things could change in a year.
Toph bitterly chuckled at the thought. He wasn’t wrong when he spoke about change before they had Lin. Change came suddenly and unapologetic. And their lives were so different from a year ago. But they weren’t better. That was apparent.
The memorial itself was a lovely, intimate ceremony with her friends and some close work colleagues in attendance. He would’ve loved it, or, she hoped he would’ve. Out of all the endless conversations they had, death was not one of them.
All the flowers had to be shipped in; Republic City’s bitter winter started to roll in early, and no native flora could withstand the sudden overnight freezes. Still, it was important that the hill had a flowery aroma with the incense. His botany obsessed heart and mind would’ve rattled off all the different types and facts of each flower, and he would’ve spent half the time describing each petal in great detail to Toph.
She insisted that there be at least one panda lily to set by his memorial, and the lengths she went through to have one in bloom in time for today was no small feat. It hung low by her side in one hand, the other occupied with her—their—daughter. Poor Lin didn’t understand the reason behind today. The chilly wind bit at her cheeks, and she sought refuge in the crook of Toph’s neck while she waited for the adults to carry on with whatever kept them outside on this cold, windy afternoon.
Zuko gave the speech. It was lovely, really, but Toph didn’t remember a single word of it. And all the hands and pats to her shoulder and back felt distant; they weren’t his steady hands, and if they weren’t his hands, then she didn’t want their support.
At the end of the formal ceremony, those in attendance dropped a single, unique flower by the memorial portrait. Some took a moment to say something to his picture, others dropped the flower and left. It meant a great deal that so many came to honor him, but truthfully, Toph didn’t care about anyone in attendance. She didn’t care about the number of flowers that dropped to the ground for him. Because in the end, only one mattered, and it wasn’t even hers.
When everyone dropped their flower in honor of him, Toph set Lin down and held onto her hand. Katara handed her the very last flower designated to be placed for him, and Toph gently steered Lin toward the memorial. It took a few moments, but when Toph and Lin arrived at his picture, Toph placed her panda lily on the pile for him, and gave a white chrysanthemum to Lin. She wrapped Lin’s chubby fingers around the stem and gestured toward the flowers.
“Come here, Lin,” Toph prompted, rather shocked that her voice sounded so strong and calm just then. “Give your flower to Daddy.”
At the sound of his name, Lin toddled over to his memorial and the pile of flowers. Her little body crouched down to the level of the pile, and she set hers on top.
Toph pulled Lin into her arms and whispered to her, “Good job, Lin.” She placed a single kiss on Lin’s cheek, and listened as her daughter said, “Dada,” over and over.
She ignored the sting of the breeze as it hit her tear-stained cheeks. “Tell Baba you love him,” she told Lin.
Lin whispered to the wind those words, saying them only loud enough for Toph to hear.
Spirits, she hated all of this. Time moved so slowly each and every day, and yet, here they were, remembering his life because it has been a year since he was alive. She hated that a year had passed, she hated that she still wasn’t over it, she hated that all the things they used to forever memorialize him were things that she couldn’t enjoy to their full extent, and she dreaded the day Lin wouldn’t call for her Baba any longer. Because that day would be sooner than Toph cared to think about.
There were too many people around, now. Toph wanted a moment with her family, no matter how broken it was. But it didn’t feel right to snap at the others and scream at them to leave, so she waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Until finally, Toph Beifong got her wish. As the crowd disappeared and all who remained were her closest friends, Toph only told them once that she wished to be alone. When they left her alone with Lin and his memorial, and as her friends waited at the bottom of the hill, Toph wept openly for him. For the drastic swerve her life took, for the inevitable reality that she’d spend more time separated from him than they were together, and for the change that the future held for her, because she no longer looked forward to it.
Alien
Clark Kent x Reader
// // : means beginning and end of a flashback or memory
You try to open your eyes as best as you could. Your right eye is incredibly swollen, somewhere above it is bleeding, and you can't help but think about how terrible you look right now. The amount of hours you've spent in this room is a blur right now- you can't remember when exactly they took you. Trying to run through your memories, you're cut short by the door opening again. You hear footsteps before you see the polished shoes. Who else would wear thousand dollar shoes to a torture room?
"Y/N, sweetie. How are you doing?" He kneels to take your chin in his hand. You're too weak to say or do anything against the man. He chuckles. "Surely Superman's identity isn't that important. Is it? He's just an alien." His clutch on your cheeks and chin tighten as he brings your good eye level with his. "Don't make me be the mean guy here. I mean, does Lexxie have to beg?" He throws your head down so you can once again stare at the floor. You slowly fade out of consciousness as Lex Luther walks out of your cell.
// //
"Come on, Clark!" You ran ahead of your boyfriend as he carried the picnic basket. At the top of the hill, you slumped onto the ground and waited for him. Once he caught up, he picked you up to sling you over his shoulder with one hand while he set the picnic with the other. You were squealing the whole time. With everything in place, Clark put you back down onto the blanket. He hovered over you, his face inches from yours.
"I'm glad we got to take this day off, Y/N. It means a lot to me." He kissed your lips gently before pulling you into his chest in a tight hug.
You simply sighed before leaning to kiss the bottom of his chin.
"It's good to just be the two of us, again. Especially after everything with your dad." His grip around you tightened. "I know you still miss him. I do, too, but everything will be alright." Clark kissed your forehead and sighed in response.
The peaceful moment was soon shattered by Clark's phone ringing. Even with his super speed, you checked the screen to see her name. You handed the phone to him as the happy features on your face began to fade.
"Hey, what's up Lois? No, this isn't a bad time." You blocked out their voices as you took out the food from the basket.
// //
The bloody wrench was dropped onto the table with the other tools. Your head hung low, and your hands were shaking. Every inch of you hurt. Every inch of you wanted this to end. Every inch of you wanted to be rescued.
"Who is Superman?" You heard the man pick up something from the table when you didn't answer. "This could all end if you would just tell me. Mr. Luther will take care of you if you just give me a name." It was a crowbar. "Come on. Just a name." As he scraped it against your bare shoulders, you could only smack your dry lips together in response. He brought the crowbar above his head and yanked it back down onto your shoulder. An inhumane noise escaped your lips- you couldn't even scream at this point. As he threw the instrument back, you finally found your voice to speak up.
"Superman is..." the man pulled up a stool to sit in front of you. He pulled your head back by your hair so he could hear you better. "Superman is.."
"Who? What? Come on!" He shook your head.
"Superman is... going to kill you." You grinned, flashing your blood stained teeth. He threw your head against the wall behind you. Everything went black again.
// //
"How come it's always her?" Your shouting at that hour in the night probably woke the neighbors. You didn't care at that point. It was suppose to be your day today anyway.
"Y/N," Clark pinched the bridge of his nose. "You know why. We work together." He turned away from you to pack a few more things into his bag.
"But a week long trip, just the two of you? It's not right, Clark. I know Perry didn't approve of this." He turned on his heel to point an accusing finger at you.
"If you're so jealous, Y/N, why don't you just leave?" The octave of his voice shook the glass around you. You staggered a step back. Apparently, the look on your face was enough to calm the angry superhero. "Y/N, no, that's not what I meant."
Your lip quivered while you rushed to cover your glossy eyes. Turning your head into your shoulder, you tried to muffle the sob that escaped your lips. Clark took a quick step towards you, but you took one away from him.
"Fine." Tears rolled down your face when you looked up at him. "When you get back, I won't be here." A look of horror and, what you assumed was disappointment, froze across the man's features. "If she's so important to miss my birthday, then I'll leave you two alone." With that, you snatched your phone and keys from the table to run out the door.
Once in your car, you knew you shouldn't, but against your better judgement, you looked up from the driver seat to see Superman fly out of your bedroom window. What a great birthday present.
After the Man of Steel was out of sight, something pricked you in the neck; what at first felt like a bug bite, soon turned into feelings of terror as your surroundings began to fade into darkness.
// //
You could still see the symbol for hope leaving you window, even though you have forgotten how long ago that was. All you knew was that you had been through three different men who tortured you differently. Each came twice, but never a third time. Luther would come the third time in between all of them. And here he was again.
You were laid out on a metallic table- your arms and legs strapped down and only your underwear on. Luther trailed a finger across your broken and bruised body.
"Come on, love. It shouldn't be this hard." He cupped your chin with his hand and forced you to look into his eyes. "I'll reward you if you just tell me. This has gone on long enough. The other girl still hasn't cracked either."
His eyes swirled with something of disgust and amusement, a sharp contradiction that you never wished to see again. You stared into his eyes before sighing. Lex dropped your chin and unstrapped your arms and went down to do the same to your legs. Finally free, you still couldn't move. Everything hurt. Lex calmly walked back towards your head.
"The other girl, Lois, I believe, was seen with Superman just like you were." His expensive shoes made more noise than they needed to. "One of you will tell me." The echo of the clicks rang through your ears. But something else was there, too. A loud thumping. It wasn't your heart, you could at least tell that.
Luther appeared to continue talking, you just couldn't hear him. You focused all of your energy on that thumping. It sounded like waves crashing against a rocky shore, or an avalanche crashing into thousands of trees. What could it be?
Your question was answered by the wall behind Luther smashing open. Several body guards ran through the smoke, only to be thrown out a second later. Your heart rate picked up, and this time you could tell it was your heart. A massive figure sped past your table and threw Lex against the wall. You tried to sit up, but your body failed you. You heard more fighting and yelling. Eventually, all the noises faded together. Your eyes became heavy, and you could feel yourself slipping out of consciousness.
A large pair of arms wrapped around your body to pick you up. You were cradled against their chest. In a last attempt to move, your eyes strained towards your savior's chest and then face. The symbol was of hope, and the face was correct, but the feeling you got was wrong.
"Stay with me, Y/N." Wrong. So wrong. "I will get you out of here and to the Watchtower." A moan escaped your lips, and your savior looked down at you. You saw his eyes.
"Y-you're not S-Superman." Your voice was weak and strained, but you assumed he-whatever he was- heard you. The symbol of hope then morphed into something familiar, yet still so alien to you.
Say My Name and I’ll Be There: 4.4
"I don't feel any different," you answered Zhongli's questions as you examined your reflection in the mirror. They had explained everything there is to know about the situation now. My eyes... Your fingertips touched the glass in which they stared back at you. "Will my eyes return to normal?"
"As far as I recall my last encounter with this incident, no. They will remain true to the eyes of their savior."
"But if Childe's joining us..."
"Just say you have contacts," Aether shrugged.
"Contacts?" You and Zhongli jinxed yourselves.
"Is...that not a thing in this world?" Your confused expressions gave him the answer he needed. "They're basically...well...colored objects that you can put on your eyes. They can be used to replace glasses or to change eye color."
"U-uh, okay..."
"Just say you got them from a merchant travelling from Fontaine. They gave me a kamera device, so I'm sure these could fall under their expertise, right?"
"Perhaps," said Zhongli.
"I'm not sure I can do this."
"It's really not that big of a deal!" Paimon comforted. "We can answer for you if he asks in front of us!"
"No, not that," you sighed. "I'm not sure if I can pretend we're on good terms after Granny died. I mean, he took the house from her and kept it all a secret from me."
"You won't have to," Xiao's voice came from the far wall. "As long as you're the only one visibly suspicious, we can still make this work."
The team packed their essentials and left Quince Village. Xiao said he had something to attend to, so no one waited for him. That was until you passed by the cemetery on the way out of the village.
He was there, standing at your Granny's grave, with a bundle of silk flowers and glaze lilies in his hand. You stopped alone in your tracks while the others continued to walk along the path, unaware of the rare sight of Xiao mourning a mortal soul. His expression revealed nothing that was going through his mind as he placed the bouquet against the stone.
It was kind of...unsettling, actually. The beautiful scenery coupled with a beautiful young man wearing a solemn frown as he stared at the rock in front of him; the rain clouds passing overhead having yet to release a single tear; the fresh flowers placed next to your wilted ones. A simple reminder that death was inevitable and that his death too, would also one day come to pass. It was eerie, yet the sight filled your chest with a warm fuzziness. He was paying his respects to a mortal that had no relation to him, but he did it for you.
You walked away before he had the chance to sense your presence.
............................
"Adeptus Xiao! And...you, Traveler?" Ver Goldet's panic transformed into a slight confusion before she shook her head to refocus on the matter at hand. She glanced around to make sure they were alone on the balcony of Wangshu Inn. "I have some urgent news to discuss with you, Xiao."
"Say it."
Goldet glanced questioningly at you and Zhongli before continuing. "T-there was a harbinger here."
"Childe?" Aether shifted.
"No, no." She shook her head frantically. "Well, yes, but no. Childe and another harbinger were here. A woman."
"Signora?" The traveler tensed, as did Paimon.
"What is she doing in Liyue? I thought she still had business with Mondstat?" The mascot shared a nervous glance with Aether.
"I think so," Goldet nodded at Aether. "I didn't know what to do. It's unusual that there would be two harbingers in the same area, especially out in the open like this. I think a storm is coming."
Xiao and Zhongli exchanged worried looks before the adeptus spoke. "I will look into it."
"Thank you, Xiao. Let me prepare some almond tofu as a token of appreciation."
The yaksha noticeably perked up hearing this, and you choked back a laugh. So adorable! That thought had unknowingly reached Xiao, bringing a dusting of pink to the tips of his ears. You were too busy gushing over him to notice.
Once Ver Goldet left for the kitchen, you asked the question that was on everyone's minds. "Now what?"
"We stick to the plan," answered Xiao, though there was a subtle hint of concern in his voice.
"And you're sure you're not allowed to interfere?" You addressed Zhongli with furrowed brows.
"I formed a contract. I cannot break it."
...................................
The adventure team was camping just east of Luhua Pool. You were at the bank of the pool, gathering water in a bucket so that the group could use it to cook lunch. It wouldn't be long before the team reached Liyue Harbor and rendezvous with Childe. A shiver crawled down your spine every time you thought about it.
Can I really keep my temper in check when we team up with him again? No...But then again, we usually butt heads every day. Maybe he'd see it as normal? You took the opportunity to scoop water in your hands and take a sip. Mm, such a crisp feeling. You gathered more, this time gazing into the water's reflection.
"What the f--!" You scrambled to your feet and your sword was now in your hands. "W-what the hell, Tartaglia?!" Adrenaline fueled your thumping heart.
"Ahahaha! Sorry, sorry!" He chuckled loud enough to scare the nearby cranes away. "And here I thought I'd have to travel further to catch up with you all. It's been what, a week? It feels so long ago. So, comrade, where is everyone?"
You readjusted your grip on your weapon and kept it pointed at him. Your breath was uneven to the point of slight hyperventilation. They're a hundred yards away from here. Should I tell him? Your eyes flicked behind the harbinger.
"Ah," he noticed your glance and peered over his shoulder. "Well, did you need help with that bucket?"
"Stay back," you ordered through clenched teeth. Your hands were shaking now.
"There's no need to point that at me," Childe's smile faded rather quickly. He reached towards you--
"I said STAY BACK!" Your shout was enough to scare the fish away.
Childe raised his hands in surrender. "What's gotten into you? Did something happen?" He examined you carefully. "And what happened to your eyes?"
"Hey!" Paimon and Aether waved at the top of the hill and interrupted the tension in the air. "We were on our way to get you!"
The harbinger dropped his hands and turned around. "Greetings! You should've seen the look on her face! I just about scared her half to death," he returned his gaze to you and his voice trailed off at the last sentence as if he were making a fool out of you for being so paranoid. "Now then, I should take that for you." He picked the bucket up and began walking towards Aether, his lips forming a frown once Zhongli and Xiao came into view.
You collapsed to your knees once the adrenaline left your body and your sword fell out of your hands. One of them made their way up to your chest and clenched the fabric that covered it in an effort to calm your heartbeat. He was here, and sooner than expected. He could have struck you down if Aether and Paimon hadn't shown up then.
"Are you okay?" Xiao appeared before you.
"Uh-huh," you inhaled shakily. Your fear overshadowed your anger towards the harbinger. Why you had gotten so terrified, you weren't sure. "He came out of nowhere."
"He's dead if he lays a finger on you," Xiao muttered aloud. He held his hand out, and you took it.
Late afternoon, early evening. You were growing increasingly agitated at Childe's insistence of a fight. "I'm not in the mood, Childe," you growled.
"Oh come now, ojou-chan! It's clear you want to fight me nooow," he cooed. "I'll just keep annoying you until you decide to entertain me! And besides, I think you secretly want to take out your pent-up rage on me, no?"
You glared daggers at him. "Oh? And what do you think I'm angry for?" You stomped towards him until you were looking directly up at him.
"Dunno," he shrugged with a smug smirk. "Care to indulge me?"
"Fine." You yanked your sword out of the tree stump you had stabbed it into. "Come at me."
"Uh...should we stop them?" Paimon twiddled with her fingers as she watched you resume a fighting stance.
"I-I don't know," Aether scratched the back of his head and looked to the adepti for a solution. They just watched you in silence.
"I thought you'd never ask, ojou-chan," he licked his lower lip and rushed at you. You ducked before his hydro blade could hit your head and slashed your sword at his torso. Childe dodged and countered. His weapon collided with yours above your head. "Would you care to tell me why you suddenly hold a grudge against me?"
"Tch. I'll pass." You pushed his blade back and used the momentum to lunge at him. He shoved you to the ground and pointed his blade at you.
"You've gotten sloppier," his lips curled into a sneer. "Looks like we still have work to do on your swordsmanship."
"I'm just getting started." You rose to your feet and readied your sword.
"Do not let anger consume you, comrade. It will seal your defeat. Instead, hone it as a weapon," he advised you as the two of you clashed for the second round.
"I don't need your advice!"
He twirled his weapon and gracefully disarmed you. Your sword clattered to the ground a few feet away. "It's clear you do. I've mastered every weapon known to man. If you think you can scrape by and conquer your foes without learning from me, you're wrong."
If it's his goal to get to me, then why train me? You plucked your sword off the ground and stared at its hilt in your palm. You caught the Xiao's reflection on the steel blade, and a strange light obscured your vision.
Images upon images upon images. Bloody battles. The clashing of metal. The hollow screams of daemons past. The rush of adrenaline, the thrill of battle. The overwhelming sense of dread. An icy shock burst through your bones, and you suddenly felt wide awake and hyperaware of your surroundings.
"Again." Childe resumed his fighting stance and thrust his weapon towards you.
The light blocking your sight faded and you instinctually sliced your blade through the air. You parried his blow without so much as looking at him. How did I do that? You faced him and realized he was just as surprised as you were.
"Good," a spark lit his eyes up now. He thrust his weapon at you again, this time at your head. And again, at your side. And once more at your legs.
You parried every attack, and with unmatched agility too. Then it was your turn. You turned the tables and began attacking him, less recklessly than you usually fought. He eyed you carefully, dodging and parrying your sword, but did not strike back even when you were wide open. Thinking and analyzing.
I never taught her these moves, he grit his teeth and sent an annoyed glance toward the yaksha. How did he manage to improve her skills so suddenly? He may have done endurance training with her, but I never once saw them practice combat. He taught her this past week, didn't he?
"Not bad," Childe praised as he leapt back. "You've been holding out on me, haven't you, ojou-chan?" He took note of the predator-like look in your eyes, much like that damned yaksha's.
You swallowed your surprise and glanced at your sword. These movements weren't my own. They were Xiao's. You sent a subtle glance his way, and noticed that Zhongli had a small smile on his face. Xiao's expression was as unreadable as ever, but he was no longer crossing his arms.
"You shouldn't take your eyes off your opponent," the Harbinger swung his lance at you. You spun yourself downward and swept his legs from beneath him. "Ngh!" He landed on his butt and dropped his weapon.
"Who said I wasn't paying attention?"
Coming up next: A harbinger’s interrogation, the hunt for teeth, and Dragonspine.
01.
it was supposed to be us against the world
It was just a normal Tuesday for you, the scorching sun was out, seeping whatever energy you had for today, class had just ended, and you were treading the thought of having to work later that day. But hey, girl’s gotta fend for herself, right?
Just as you arrived at the station, your phone buzzed in your pocket. Lazily taking it out, your (e/c) eyes scanned the text before shooting wide open, you instantly took off, never minding work, thoughts flying to one thing - Izuku.
For such a prestigious school, it sure had a lousy way of being indiscreet if it were located on top of a hill. Winded from the trip, barely feeling your legs, drenched completely in sweat from the trek, a hero awaited for you at the gate, giving you instructions on how to get to your location (he figured to give it straight to you, judging from your harried breathing and frazzled state alone).
Finding the clinic, you all but burst into the room, eyes easily finding curly green locks. "Izuku!"
Green eyes widened at the sight of you, taking the sight of you. "(Nickname)-!? H-How did you-"
"Are you alright?!"
Flinching at the pitch, tone, and of the overall worry painting your features, he all but gave you a sheepish look whilst rubbing the back of his head. That didn't help, but at least seeing him now in the bed was making your worries lessen.
“He’ll be fine, I’ve treated the worst of his injuries.” The small lady- hero, Recovery Girl, tells you from where she sat. “He just woke up and has made a full recovery now!”
Allowing yourself to sigh in relief, you collapsed by his bed, legs pressed against the cool tiled-floor, eyeing the green-haired boy with narrowed eyes.
"Really, Izuku, you better take better care of yourself."
A scarred hand reached out to pat your shoulder, seeping away the tiredness of practically storming all the way here. "I know, (Nickname). I'm sorry for worrying you..."
Once Recovery Girl assured you that she was to see your best friend fit, you allowed yourself to rest a while before making sure that his recovery was done. You would have loved to wait until he got better, so you can leave, but you had to report to work, even for just a bit then head home to change. Giving your best friend an apologetic look, Izuku nodded in understanding and you reluctantly complied to leave. But not without giving him a parting hug.
“Really, you have to stop giving me a heart attack,” you warned him, teasingly, earning a laugh from the green-haired boy. “I’ll be over for dinner later, okay?”
At that, his eyes brightened. “I’ll be sure to tell mom! She’ll surely be happy to have you over.”
“And I look forward to Auntie’s cooking!”
With one last wave at your best friend, a polite-grateful bow to the school nurse, you turned to the door.
Once out, however, you were face to face with the last person you wanted to see. You ignored him, bent on getting out of here. There was nothing to be said. Absolutely nothing. And it was better off that way.
“Ta-dah!”
“Uwah!!!” big green eyes – matching the shade of his wild curly locks, widened.
“What is it, what is it?” a small blond boy ran towards them excitedly, especially at the excitement at the tone of his two precious friends. “So, what is it?” he asked, head tilted in question at the object in hand.
Grinning toothily, the young girl placed it atop curly locks, flowers intertwined with each other, the green camouflaging with the boy’s locks, as though the flowers sprouted from his hair. “It’s a flower crown, silly!”
“Che, and I was excited for nothing,” the blond boy’s cheeks puffed. Carmine eyes glared at the object on his friend’s hair. “So girly…”
Miffed, the (h/c) girl’s tiny fists balled, stomping her foot. “W-Well duh, because I am a girl!”
“Yeah right!” teased the blond, scratching the underside of his nose, angering the girl as she began to growl.
“Hey, no fighting now…” the small green-haired boy called out to his friends. “…please?”
The two looked at him, then at each other before parting away, the girl’s arms crossed.
“W-Well, if Izuku says so! I’ll forgive you this time, Katsuki!”
Carmine eyes narrowed; cheeks puffed as they reddened to slowly match his eyes. “W-Whatever!”
At that, Izuku smiled, getting to his feet to grab the hands of his best friends. Smiles appearing on his other friend’s faces.
“Ah, by the way!” the (h/c) girl suddenly cried out, alarming the two boys. Heading towards the pile of flowers she was fiddling with earlier, she took something from the ground, keeping her hands behind her as she walked up to the blond boy. “N-Ne, Katsuki, g-give me your hand…”
“…what? No way!”
“Come on, just give me your hand!”
“No way, you might give me a bug!”
“No, I won’t!”
“Then you might just prank me!”
“Didn’t I say that I wouldn’t?”
“How would I know if you’re telling the truth!”
“If you just give me your hand!”
Stuck in between another argument, the green-haired boy could only laugh at their antics.
“K-Katsuki, please?”
She widened her eyes on purpose, pouting purposely to jut out her lower lip, it was all it took for the young blond to cave in. Also, she did say ‘please’.
Reluctantly, stretched out his hand watching as she happily reached for it, her hand now in his. His cheeks reddened, not that he’d say it out loud and chose to frown. “Alright, now close your eyes!” Not wanting to argue, he did as was asked, without putting up a fight. At first, he heard Izuku gasp and she quickly shushed him, almost excitedly, before he felt something slip into his ring finger. “Okay, now open!”
The first thing he saw were (eye color) orbs so big and bright – filled with excitement and joy before his eyes fell unto the object in his hand. The flowers were just as wild and vibrant as Izuku’s, except his was more but fit to wrap around his stubby fingers.
“Wow, (Nickname), it’s so pretty! You’re amazing!”
Chubby cheeks flushed at that, turning to him expectantly. “D-Do you like it?” came her quiet voice.
Silence.
Green and (hair color) heads turned to each other, sharing a look. The taller girl was about to ask again but stopped head tilting. Beside her, the green-haired boy’s mouth formed into an ‘o’, hands slapping against his freckled cheeks.
“K-Katsuki, are you turning-“
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” screamed the boy, messing his hair with his free hand before turning to the girl, a look of determination in his eyes as he pointed, using the hand with the ring flower. “W-W-When we get older, I-I’ll get you the biggest, shiniest, prettiest wedding ring, you hear me!?”
“Kacchan…”
“And Deku!” he turned to the green-haired boy, no longer irked by the flower crown. “You’re going to be my best man, got it?”
Realizing his outburst, the two friends burst into laughter, the blond’s face heating even more.
“Stop laughing at me! Deku! (Name)!”
“Auntie, you didn’t have to prepare so much!” you call out to Auntie Inko, eyes wide like saucers when you saw the meal served at the table.
Meal wasn’t even the word to put it, it was more like a feast! The Midoriya matriarch had prepared spaghetti, karaage, tempura shrimp, grilled eel, salad, and some side dishes. Basically, it was a lot of protein and carbs.
“Nonsense, (Name)-chan! It’s been a while since I last saw you,” she says kindly as you take a seat. “also, this is to celebrate Izuku’s good performance at school, so he can now rest easy for summer break.”
“Thank you so much, mom!” Izuku flusters, especially when she says it so easily in front of their guest as if you’re not used to it.
“Oh, Izuku, still that flustered momma’s boy, huh?”
“(N-Nickame)!”
Laughing, the three of you begin to dig in, exchanging stories about school, your part-time job, some funny customer Auntie Inko had to deal with earlier at the office (she was a government employee), your grandfather, and his dojo. It was always so comforting having dinners with the Midoriyas, always so warm.
Volunteering to help with the dishes, the two youngsters continued to catch up, talking about just about anything. It was always easy to talk with Izuku, always refreshing to be in his presence and hear his thoughts about things.
“Eh? So, you’re classmates with the son of Endeavour?”
“Yes! And his quirk is amazing! He’s half-cold and half-hot.”
“How does that even work?”
“Well, he’s in a constant state of homeostasis to balance out both quirks.”
“Must be hard to manage 24/7 then.”
“That’s true. But with enough practice, he may be able to stabilize both quirks to be able to do more, especially because it can be a double-whammy to villains who might not expect from someone capable of managing two quirks at the same time, there’s also the fact that he can be able to maneuver better should he master his other side…”
The kitchen slowly filled with his ramblings as the last of the dishes were taken care of, which you didn’t seem to mind. It always fun to hear him ramble, knowing that there was a big brain beneath his curly green locks. He was like a walking encyclopedia.
When the clock struck 9, you had announced that you were off, lest you worry your dear grandfather. Izuku volunteered to walk you home.
“Ah, please wait a minute, (Name)-chan!” Aunt Inko shouted when the two of you were at the front entrance, rushing towards you both with a few Tupperware in hand – leftovers from dinner.
“Oh my! Auntie Inko, thank you so much!”
She smiled at you, reaching up to caress your cheek. “Please drop by for dinner more often, (Name)-chan, okay?”
The hand was soft and warm against your cheek, calming your heart with love washing over you. Nodding, silently promising the older woman, you turned to Izuku, who opened the door for you.
“Good night, Auntie Inko!”
Once the two of you reached the neighborhood, you couldn’t help but stare off at the playground – still the same as before, but the paint’s probably new. You could almost picture out three kids running around, chasing each other merrily.
“Man, your mom really didn’t have to put up a feast.”
Laughing, Izuku scratched his cheek as he replied. “Well, she does like to go out whenever she can. Plus, it’s not always (Nickname) comes over for dinner. Also, I’ve been increasing my diet lately because of my quirk.”
Ah, his newly acquired quirk. “Come to think of it, you have been getting bulkier since the last I saw you.”
“Well, I have to compensate mass for all the power I’ve acquired.”
The matter of his quirk piqued your interest, especially because of how much it’s taking a toll on your friend. Instead of backing down, he readily worked his way to accommodate such power.
“True,” you nod, turning to him, realizing he’s grown several inches taller as well, you couldn’t help but giggle. “that and because you’re probably finally hitting puberty.”
“E-Eh!?”
“Dude, you used to be my height!” you tell him, gesturing with your hand your height. “Now, you’re…well, not really that huge, but the growth rate is a bit alarming, to say the least.”
Suddenly, he was sweating bullets, looking between relief and mild panic. “A-Ah…puberty…yes, m-must be th-that a-an-and i-i-it’s side-effects on t-th-the quirk- my quirk!” And there’s his stuttering. Still adorable.
Nudging him with your shoulder, you were quick to assure him. “There, there,” deciding to just sling your arm around his, you leaned on him comfortingly “you’ll always be cry baby Izuku to me!”
“(Nickname)!”
“Or was it wimpy Izuku?”
“(Nickname), please…”
Despite the name-calling, they were all in good fun. A comfortable silence filled in, nothing needed to be said as you two walked around the quiet streets of Musutafu.
For the first time since you were kids, you were apart because you went to different high schools, it hurt because you two were always together and you were each other’s shoulder to lean on. Technology had a great way of bridging you two together, keeping each other up to date on the other’s lives. But nothing beat direct communication with the ones you loved and you relished nothing more than these small moments with your best friend.
“By the way, (Nickname),” Izuku’s voice suddenly cut through the silence. “how is your grandfather? Couldn’t he have dropped by for dinner as well?”
At the mention of your grandfather, you couldn’t help your expression from souring. “Eh, let him be, he’s probably off watching reruns of those tournament matches to prepare. He wants to rough up the team to tough shape.” Despite his age, your grandfather had quite the build and was the martial arts coach at your high school (don’t ask which martial arts specifically, he knows them all).
“That’s true, he might want to challenge me at the front entrance door before dinner started.”
“And your mom would cry a planet at the devastation left between you two.”
It would be quiet the image, knowing how strong both your grandfather and Izuku was, and then Auntie Inko would be comically crying about in the background.
“Oh, and I’ll just watch because no way am I coming between you monsters, while comforting Auntie Inko.”
As the image progressed, the two of you giggled amongst yourselves, the two of you were nearing a lamppost, resting comfortably against his arm, when a presence before you made the two of you stop.
A blond teen came into view, halting at the sight of both of you. Dressed lazily in his home clothes, with a plastic bag filled with items he got from the convenience store.
Instantly, the laughter died out from you, lips set into a thin line.
“K-Kacchan…” stuttered the teen beside you, gulping at the tense air. “…g-good evening.”
Said teen could only blink, carmine eyes taking in the sight of both of you. Something glinted soon after.
Eyes narrowing, you gently tugged at Izuku’s sleeve, continuing your journey, dismissing the blond completely. The two of you walked past the blond, who slowly began to move when you did, starting a new conversation about Izuku’s homeroom teacher, anything to block off that one person who was forever dead to you.
(Blocks away, the blond stopped in his path, hands still balled into fists, glare fixed to the ground, while a gentle laugh coming from a gentle smile relayed in his head. They weren’t for him.
“Fuck.”)
Midoriya Izuku and Bakugo Katsuki were both your childhood friends.
They were both the first friends you made ever since moving into their town.
To be fair though, Bakugo was your first friend. He then introduced you to the green-haired boy a few days later.
Since then, the three of you grew close, were inseparable, and always played together. There was never a day when the three of you were not with the other, always ensuring to include the other whenever there was a new game to play, a new kid to befriend, or an adventure to go off to.
Bakugo had always been the leader of the three since he had such a strong personality and presence even at the age of 5. He was quick to protect the two of you and command whatever new stuff you were to do.
Izuku was his opposite, submissive, soft, and shy. Nonetheless, he had a very strong sense of justice, even when he seemed to cry a lot, and was recklessly impulsive.
And then there was you, the new girl – quiet, unassuming, tomboy. Sometimes, you liked to pretend to be the mom of the two boys, the big sister, the glue that kept you three together – but you and Katsuki knew that it was Izuku, really.
Regardless, you could always count on the two. Bakugo, especially.
He was the front liner to push you to do things you want to do, uncaring of the fact that you were a girl, because it was a minor detail to all the amazing things you could do – like catch a bug, run like the wind, play under the rain, climb trees, give bullies a beating when they were picking on Izuku, play video games, to name a few. (In addition, you were into martial arts, because it was in the family)
It was because you were so close to Bakugo that you picked up on cursing, much to the shock of dear Izuku’s innocent baby ears. You couldn’t help being a tomboy because of the fact that your best friends were guys and games the blond would instigate, you loved to challenge him in just about anything – especially at claiming to be Izuku’s bestest friend.
Still, whenever you fell or scraped your knee, it was Bakugo who’d lend a hand, angrily berate you on being reckless, before picking you from the ground or giving you a piggyback – Izuku would cry all the way, worried about your state and the possible scolding from your parents and grandfather.
You three were supposed to stick together, stay inseparable, always with each other.
That is until Bakugo discovered his quirk, followed by Izuku discovering that he was quirkless.
And ever since then, everything changed.
STILES POV
Light streaks were hitting my face, making me groan. I tried to cover them with my hands, but it seemed like the light could pierce through my skin.
Softly letting my eyes open, I felt my swallow breath. I was inside a locker, and I didn't know what had happened for me to end like this. My mind rapidly went to Scott, was he alright? Did the supernatural come back? I just couldn't remember what had happened for me to end in such a situation. And what about Y/N?
I hit the door, trying to get it open. My breathing became even more accelerated as the door didn't budge. Finally, after using as much strength as I could, I freed myself from the confined space, just to notice that I was in the locker room at school. What was I doing here?
Everything was dark, and as I glanced down at my feet, I noticed that I was barefoot. Then, my eyes slowly went up. I was in my pyjamas.
Coming out of the locker room, I couldn't help but be wary, afraid to be attacked by some beast. At the end of the corridor, I saw an open door, which seemed to have light.
While going inside the room, everything seemed to be a mess. Chairs and tables were laying on the floor, in positions that weren't ordinary. But my heart beat even faster as I saw the Nemeton in the middle of the room. I slowly placed my hand on it just to be caught by branches.
I gasped, sitting down on my bed. It was just a nightmare. I was safe in the confines of my bedroom. I was safe. Everyone was safe.
"You okay?" A familiar voice asked me, and I quickly turned around. Her hand landed on my bicep, squeezing it gently. "Stiles?"
"Yeah," I tried to steady my breathing. "I was just dreaming." I closed my eyes for a couple of seconds. "I was just dreaming. It was weird. It was like a dream within a dream."
"A nightmare?" I placed my hand on top of hers, not daring to look at my girlfriend as she would get worried about me.
"Yeah." I sighed. "Wait a second, Y/N." I glanced at her, noticing a big smile on her face. "What are you doing here? I dropped you home last night." I hear the crack of the door, rapidly examining it as it opened. "Hang on."
"Stiles, where are you going?"
"I'm just gonna close the door." My gaze didn't shift from the door, and for some reason, it made me feel dizzy.
"Just come to bed, baby." Not even the pet name I loved to hear made me turn around.
"No, no, I should close it." I was in a trance as I walked closer, taking small steps.
"Don't worry about it." Her voice seemed to warn me, begging me to go back to bed.
I shook my head, tasting the sweat that was now running over my lips. "What if someone comes in?"
"Like who?" She didn't move from the bed. "Just go back to sleep, Stiles." I was standing now in front of the door. "Stiles, just leave it. Please. Stiles." My left hand reached to touch the knob. "Stiles, come back to bed. Stiles." I gripped the handle, quickly turning it and opening the door. "Please. Don't, Stiles. Don't!" She was yelling so loud that my heart was breaking, but I didn't listen to her. I couldn't. "Don't go in there, please, don't. Please, Stiles, don't!" I did. I walked through the darkness.
But soon, the darkness became more than one blinding light. My body shivered as the wind hit my bare arms. I was underdressed to be at the-. Where was I? Lacrosse field, why?
"Okay," My breathing became uneven. "It's a dream. This is just a dream. It's just a dream, get it out of your head, Stiles." I talked to myself. "You're dreaming. All right? So, wake up, Stiles." I couldn't breathe properly, and the tears invaded me as I was terrified. I hit my head repeatedly. "Wake up, Stiles. Wake up!"
"Stiles?" I turned around, seeing Y/N again. Why was she on the lacrosse field.
"W-What are you doing here?" I wandered to her, confused by the situation. I extended my arms, cautiously, trying to make sure that it was her. I sighed in relief as she came into my arms, embracing me. Her body was shaking.
"I don't know." She swallowed, glancing around to move her gaze to me. "I was home, and then I was here." She shivered, and I quickly rubbed her bare arms.
"Okay," I tried to calm myself down. "Let's go home, okay?" I placed my hand on her lower back, encouraging her to walk with me.
"My dream was scary," She stopped walking, and I felt so broken as soon as tears started rolling down her cheeks. "Y-You were there, and you tried to kill me, Stiles." She was loudly weeping.
"It was just a nightmare, baby." I grabbed her cheeks. "I would never do that to you. I would kill whoever comes near you."
"But you did, Stiles." She moved away from my hands. "You tried to kill me!" She screamed so loud that my ears started vibrating. "You tried to kill me!" It became even louder. "So I will kill you first." She showed me her hands. She was gripping a shiny knife, and before I could do something, she repeatedly stabbed me in the chest, wickedly smirking.
I shouted as loud as I could. Hardly noticing how my dad came into the room, hugging me from behind and trying to calm me down. However, I couldn't stop screaming.
"Mmmh," My mouth was watering. My elbows resting on top of the counter as I glanced at the food Melissa was preparing. "Smells so good."
She glanced at me, smiling. "Hopefully, it tastes good too." She chuckled. "I'm not a good chef." Due to her shifts at the hospital, I had learnt that she hardly ever cooked, preferring to order food.
"Well, if it tastes as good as it smells, you will have to change your shift to cook more often." I grinned while she laughed.
"I don't think so." Shaking her head, she stirred the vegetables. "Ugh, I think Scott left the grocery bags on the living room. Can you bring them here?"
I started walking towards the living room, not taking my eyes from her. "Not surprised my dear brother is so distracted." As I heard her laugh, I decided to look to the front, not wanting to hit any furniture. But there weren't any, because I was in the middle of a field. "M-mama McCall?" I called, even though I knew she wasn't there.
Everything was dark, and the moon seemed to laugh at me. I could see its reflection on the surface of a lake. I leisurely walked towards it, confused. My eyes were focused on the water, as I thought I saw something moving inside it. Bubbles were coming up, and as I tilted my head to the side, a hand came from underwater, seizing me by the neck.
I gasped, grabbing the flaky hand with both of my hands, trying to lessen the grip around my throat. But the only thing that happened was me getting farther from the ground.
A giant monster who reminded me of the Kanima was holding me up from my neck. And as I peered down, I was at least fifteen meters away from the ground.
His enormous green eyes studied me. He opened his mouth, a repulsive smell invading all of my senses. His teeth were sharp and stained. I thought he was going to eat me alive, but he was showing me how Stiles was on his mouth, screaming for me to help him.
"This is your fault!" He was crying. "IT killed my dad, and now it's going to kill me!" His face was red, and my anxiety rose as I couldn't answer his claims. "It all started because you came to Beacon Hills! You brought the Kanima! You did i-." His words were interrupted as he was swallowed by it.
I could finally scream. "STILES! STILES!" I closed my eyes as tears ran down my cheeks. "STILES!"
Hearing my name, I turned around. I was sitting on the floor of the living room, and Melissa was looking at me with a worried expression decorating her face. "Hey, hey. What happened?" Her hands caressed my hair, and as I tried to control my breathing, I couldn't help but lean on her. "Are you okay?" I nodded my head. I wasn't okay.
"I'm okay." I stepped closer to Stiles and my brother, not feeling like offering them a smile.
"No, you're not." The hazel-eyed boy shook his head. "It's happening to you too. You're seeing things, aren't you?" I glanced at him, bewildered.
"How'd you know?" My brother asked, attempting to control his breathing.
Overhearing steps, we saw Lydia and Allison getting closer to us. "Because it's happening to all three of you."
"Actually," Everyone glanced at me. "To the four of us." I swallowed, gaze shifting to my boyfriend. He made a sign for me to get closer to him. His arms engulfed my body. Both of us sighing in relief. "It was terrifying."
"Well, well, look who's no longer the crazy one." The strawberry blonde girl seemed to be enjoying our terrifying expressions and the dark bags under our eyes.
"We're not crazy." Allison rolled her eyes.
Lydia turned around, glancing at us. "Hallucinating? Sleep paralysis? Yeah, you guys are fine."
"We did die and come back to life." My brother stared at us. "That's gotta have some side effects, right?"
"I didn't," I added, hugging myself. "I didn't do that, so why is it happening to me too?"
I felt a hand grabbing mine, fingers intertwining. "We keep an eye on each other. Okay?" The Stilinski boy received nods as an answer. "And Lydia, stop enjoying this so much."
It didn't seem like the day would be easy. We had this new teacher, who made us forget about what was going on for a couple of seconds as he embarrassed his daughter, who was one of our classmates. However, Scott's eyes started to glow, and Stiles and I had to let him know.
Then, I received a message from Lydia. She told me that Allison was doing as bad as us. She had fucked up a canvas, and she had imagined it was the blood of her aunt Kate.
I walked closer to the lockers with the boys. "Maybe we need a little more time to get back to normal." My brother was trying to convince himself.
"Yeah," And my boyfriend wasn't taking it as he fought his locker. "Try not to forget we hit the reset button on a supernatural beacon for supernatural creatures. There's a pretty good chance things are never going back to normal."
"Yeah." Both of the boys got distracted. Stiles studied his locker as if he was seeing something while Scott had noticed the new girl at the end of the corridor, creepily peering at her.
"Oh shit," I bit my lower lip. Both boys quickly glanced at me, making sure that I was alright. "Your eyes are flashing."
"You mean like right now?"
"Yes, right now." Stiles nodded his head, looking around, making sure that nobody noticed. "Scott, stop. Stop it."
The other boy panted. "I can't. I can't control it." He quickly covered his eyes with his hands, keeping his head low. Stiles and I guided him towards a classroom, closing the door behind us. He took his backpack and his jacket off, letting it fall to the floor. "Get back away from me." His voice was deeper than usual. "I don't know what's going to happen. Get back." His fangs were out.
I got closer to Stiles, and he didn't hesitate to step in front of me in case my brother would completely lose his mind. But he didn't. His nails stabbed the inside of his hands, blood dripping down his arms. Then, he just went back to normal.
Stiles and I stepped closer, glancing at my brother whose face was full of sweat. However, the boy still kept me behind him. "Pain makes you human." His voice wavered.
"Scott, this isn't just in our heads. This is real. And it's starting to get bad for me too. I'm not just having nightmares. I'm having dreams where I have to literally scream myself awake." I rested my hand on his back, rubbing circles on it. "And sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm actually ever waking up."
"What do you mean?" I asked, frightened.
He glanced at me for a couple of seconds to later look into the distance. "Do you know how you can tell if you're dreaming?" My brother and I shook our heads. "You can't read in dreams. More and more, the past few days, I've been having trouble reading. It's like I can't see the words. I can't put the letters in order."
"Like even now?" Scott asked.
The Hazel eyes shifted their gaze to the blackboard. "I can't read a thing."
"You know, the last time we bought one of these to her grave was stolen the same day." Stiles placed some flowers on top of his dad's desk. "Hundred bucks down the drain." I couldn't believe that people would do that. "Hey, Dad?" Mr. Stilinski was sitting on the floor, behind his desk. "Hi, what are you doing down there?"
"Working." He went back to look at all the papers that were scattered on the floor. "And hey, if somebody wants the flowers that badly, they can have them. It's the gesture."
"Hey, Dad, what is all this?"
"I've been looking over some old cases from a more illuminated perspective, if you know what I mean." I snickered, nodding my head as Stiles did the same.
The boy grabbed some files. "Strange sighting of bipedal lizard man sprinting across freeway."
"Kanima pile." Mr. Stilinski hit some other files as his son placed the folder where his dad told him.
"Mr. Stilin-." As I received a look from him, I quickly changed my words. "Noah, you're not going back through all your old cases seeing if any of them had something to do with the supernatural, are you?"
"I admit the recent opening of my eyes to the greater mysteries of the universe has got me reassessing." He sighed. "There's at least 100 cases here where I look at the details, and I can ask myself if I knew then what I know now."
We both kneeled on the ground. "Right, but are you sure you wanna go down that path?"
"Do I have a choice?" He got up. "There's one case in particular that I can't get out of my head." He passed some files to us. I got closer to my boyfriend, trying to take a better look. "Eight years ago, I was elected Sheriff of County, my first official duty was to tell a man that not only had his wife, and two kids died in a car accident, but, as best we could tell, the body of his daughter had been dragged from the wreck by coyotes."
I gasped while studying the picture of a little girl, happily smiling. "You mean dragged and eaten?"
"We didn't find the car until three days after the crash. They had driven off the road into a pretty deep ravine. Two bodies that were still in the car were covered in bites and slashes." He seemed to be reminiscing that old case.
"So you're thinking bites and claw marks, probably a werewolf attack?"
He nodded his head at his son. "Maybe."
"But coyotes, they scavenge, right?" Stiles shook his head. "So, couldn't they have just left the bites and the slashes?"
"Absolutely." He nodded his head. "But guess what night the accident occurred on?" He pointed to the bold date on the file.
"The night of a full moon." I added, glancing at my boyfriend who was already looking at me.
"Hey, Dad." Hazel eyes glanced around the room, examining all the boxes that were scattered around. "Where are all these going?"
The Sheriff sighed, biting his lip. "Yeah, we, uh-." His eyes focused on me. "We probably need to talk about that."
The next day, all of us were nervously sitting on a table outside of the school. And as much as I wanted to enjoy the weather, I just couldn't.
"Okay, so what happens to a person who has a near-death experience and comes out of it seeing things?" My brother asked without taking his eyes off the wooden table.
"And is unable to tell what's real or not?" Stiles added, his legs bouncing up and down.
"And is being haunted by demonic visions of dead relatives?" Allison spoke up.
"And can't stop dreaming about dying people blaming her?" It was the first time I blatantly spoke about my dreams. Stiles glimpsed at me, worried, and swiftly kissing my forehead.
"They're all locked up because they're insane." I snapped my gaze to Issac, grabbing one of Stiles pencils and throwing it at his forehead. He gasped, rubbing the spot where I hit him. "For half my childhood, I was locked in a freezer. So, being helpful is kind of a new thing for me."
The owner of the pencil and the person I hit with the item started to argue. "Hi. Hi, sorry." I glanced to my side. The new girl was standing there, clutching a notebook between her fingers. "I couldn't help overhearing what you guys were talking about. And I think I actually might know what you're talking about." We didn't say anything, waiting for her to continue. "There's a Tibetan word for it. It's called 'Bardo'. It literally means 'in-between state.' The state between life and death."
Lydia sounded mean as she spoke up. "And what do they call you?"
"Kira," My brother instantly answered. Smooth, McCall. "She's in our History class."
"So are you talking Bardo in Tibetan Buddhism or Indian?" The strawberry blonde seemed to be a little more interested. However, her tone didn't prove the same thing.
"Either, I guess." She glanced at me, and I moved closer to Stiles so she could sit beside me. "But all the stuff you guys were just saying? All that happens in Bardo. There are different progressive states where you can have hallucinations. Some you see, some you just hear. And you can be visited by peaceful and wrathful deities." She smiled.
"Wrathful deities?" I couldn't help and grin as Isaac repeated her last words. His chin, resting on top of his hand. "And what are those?"
"Like demons!" She was too excited about the topic while we were probably shitting our pants.
"Demons." Stiles looked around, nodding his head. "Why not?"
"Hold on," Allison decided to interrupt. "If there are different progressive states, then what's the last one?"
"Death. You die."
That same night, we decided to talk with Deaton, asking for help and explaining the situation that was suffocating us. He believed that after going underwater, we had opened a door in our minds, and we needed to close them as soon as possible because it was making us vulnerable.
I was confused and informed him that I was going through the same thing as the other three. The only difference was that I never got in one of the bathtubs. Deaton was also surprised but believed that the Kanima had opened a door in my head. A door that like the other three, I had to close.
As we were coming out of the vet clinic, a car pulled up. "Dad, what are you doing here?" Stiles glanced at his father as he rubbed my arms. He had already given me his jacket, but I was still freeing.
"I'm here because I could use some help." His gaze shifted to my brother. "Actually, your help." My brother asked why. "Because eight years ago, almost an entire family died in a car accident. One of the bodies, a young girl named Malia, was never found. There's enough evidence to have me thinking that a werewolf could have caused the accident, and then dragged her body away." Stiles and I already knew about this. "If you could somehow get a lock on her scent if you could somehow help me find her body, it might provide the missing clue."
"But what if it was a werewolf?"
"Well, there's somebody out there who murdered an entire family. Someone who still needs to be caught."
And that is how we ended in another mess. Mr. Stilinski had driven us to the Tate household, and he planned to distract Mr. Tate while we sought for something that could help Scott pick up her scent.
My brother was sniffing some plushies, hoping they would be the lost girl's ones. "All I'm getting is some animal smell."
Stiles grabbed another plushie. "What kind of animal?" As we heard a growl, we turned around. A big dog was studying our movements as he snarled. "Hi, puppy." We didn't move a finger. "Get rid of it." My brother was puzzled. "Yes, you. Glow your eyes at it, something, be the Alpha."
"I can't. I don't have control." The curly-haired boy shook his head, trying not to make drastic movements.
"Can you like, smell each other's butts and be friends?" I genuinely asked, receiving a look from both boys. Scott wanted to roll his eyes while my boyfriend agreed with me.
The dog felt intimidated, and he started barking as loud as he could. Mr. Tate screamed at him, and we were glad to be on different floors of the house. Apollo, the dog, shut up immediately, leaving us on our own.
However, Noah was kicked out of the house as Mr. Tate couldn't stand the thought of his wife and girls being murdered. He had spent eight years of his life trying to accept that they were killed in an accident.
When the four of us where far from the house, Scott had to inform the older Stilinski that he wasn't able to pick up a scent. "Why is it so important now?" My brother asked as he observed Noah driving away.
"He wants to be able to solve one more while he's still Sheriff." Stiles glanced at this friend.
"What do you mean, 'still Sheriff'?"
"That doesn't make any sense, Dad!" Scott continued screaming, and my anxiety rose, wishing for Melissa to come back home. "Who are you helping? Just get out."
"Scott."
"What? I can't believe that you'd do this to my best friend." He was spitting due to how angry he was. I decided not to interfere as a couple of minutes ago, when I tried to calm him down, he snapped at me.
"I'm not doing anything to your friend." I scoffed, receiving a look from him. "I'm doing my job."
"Your job sucks."
"Some days I can't argue that."
I heard the door opening, glancing at Melissa who was coming late from work. She sent me a confused expression, and I quickly shook my head.
"Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on?" She placed her bag on the couch. I wandered closer to her, standing by her side as she brought me nearer her body. Screams, I couldn't stand people screaming.
Scott offered me an apologizing look but continued. "He's trying to get Stiles's dad fired."
"No. That's not true."
"What are you doing?" Mama McCall came to our rescue.
"Conducting a case for impeachment."
"That sounds a lot like getting him fired."
"The lack of resolution and ability to close cases is what's going to get him fired. My job is just to collect the information. And it's the job my superiors have given me." He attempted to defend himself.
"Beacon Hills needs Noah Stilinski as the Sheriff." I decided to interfere, mad by how he was addressing the man I appreciated with all my heart. "Tell me, Agent McCall. Did you solve EVERY case you had?" He didn't answer. "I'm sure people got in the way, conditions, information, missing hints. Sadly, not all cases in the world will end up being solved." Melissa squeezed my arm, reassuring me. "But that doesn't make someone incompetent. It makes him even more accountable because he could have given up as soon as a case got more complex, but he didn't." I took a breath. "Mr. Stilinski did, does, and will do so much for Beacon Hills. And I know you don't care about what other people may feel or say," I spat. "But Beacon Hills won't feel as safe if Noah Stilinski isn't the Sheriff."
"Scott, sweetheart. Calm down." Melissa walked closer to the boy, noticing his swallow breathes and his nails. "Come with me right now. Let it go. Just breathe and let it go." Both of them left the room, and I stayed back for a couple of seconds to glare at the sperm donor.
"Why do you stay when you don't have to but leave when you have to stay?" I asked just to receive a perplexed look. I shook my head, searching for the other two McCall's.
As I rounded the corner, I heard Melissa. "You told me you and Stiles learned a way to control this." She was trying to calm Scott. "You find an anchor, right? Find your anchor."
"My anchor was Allison." His fangs were out while his eyes were flashing. "I don't have Allison anymore."
"Then be your own anchor. You can do this." I walked closer to my brother, grasping his hand and breathing calmly so he could follow my pace. "Sweetheart, let me tell you something no teenager ever believes, but I swear to you is the absolute truth. You fall in love more than once. It'll happen again. And it'll be just as amazing and as extraordinary as the first time. And maybe just as painful. But it will happen again, I promise. And until then," She squeezed his arm. "Be your own anchor."
That night Scott and I went to Stiles's house, we went to the forest in search of the dead body. But we didn't find a dead body, we found an animal.
Problems seemed to invade us; the Tate case, anchors, and the fact that my father didn't even recognize me.
A Drop of Poison - Ch. 9: The Creature
A Loki fanfiction!
Previous Chapter --- Next Chapter
Full Chapter List
-------------------------------------
“Ouch! You stepped on my foot!” Pom said to Mo as the three of you stumbled inside the invisibility cloak. It barely covered the three of you and Mo was uncomfortably crab walking.
“I’m sorry, I can barely see a thing,” he said.
“Will you both please be quiet? The cloak isn’t soundproof, Skurge could hear us from across the school at this point!” you said.
The three of you crossed the main hallway and were about ten feet away from a side entrance to the courtyard outside. It was then you heard footsteps. The three of you were in the middle of the hall and there was nowhere to hide, so you stood completely still and waited.
It was Professor Heimdall. He was the one teacher you were concerned about who could see beyond what was ‘normal’. You held your breath as he walked past you. He paused for a moment and glanced about the room, as if he sensed something off, but he moved on. When he was far enough away, Mo and Pom sighed deeply and you led them out the door.
The air was chilly, and a biting wind flapped the cloak against your feet. “Let’s move fast. We can’t afford someone seeing us! Hold the cloak and walk together!” you said, above the howling wind.
The trees rustled and leaves soared past you. Some hit the cloak and you tried to shake them off as best you could. At one point, Mo had bumped his head onto a tree branch since he was so occupied watching his own feet as to not step on anyone’s toes again.
When the three of you reached the treeline of the Forbidden Forest, you stopped and took off the cloak. The autumn air chilled you to the bone, but you shook it away, concentrating on what you were about to do.
“Mo! We need you to stay here in case something goes wrong. Get help only if you absolutely have to,” you said.
Pom nodded. “I don’t think there’s much of a vantage point from the windows, so if you stay close to the trees here, you should be covered until we come back with Ken.”
Your heart lurched at her positivity and you prayed he was still alive.
“Got it! You two better hurry your asses up, because it is cold and I want to keep my balls if you don’t mind.”
You rolled your eyes at him and looked at Pom. “You sure you want to come with me?” You said.
“I need to find him.”
Mo shouted behind you both, “don’t die!”
You threw the cloak around both of you and ventured into the darkness of the forest. The sun had set several hours ago, and it was nearly midnight. The trees were encased in shadow and the faint moonlight cast an eerie glow over the grey parts of the forest. Everything looked more dead than you remembered before. The leaves were dry and withered looking and many of the flowers had wilted. The ground was so uneven that it took you and Pom several minutes to get used to walking together with the cloak. You had no idea if invisibility would be helpful or not; it depended on the creature’s senses.
There was a distant howl in the woods that sent a chill down your spine.
***
Loki raced out of his office and down the corridors, heading to the main floor. He burst through one of the east exits and cold air slapped his face as he rushed to the Forbidden Forest in the direction that he had seen the students on the Marauder’s Map. The magical map did not lie. When it showed names, those people were there.
He jogged across the field and approached the treeline of the Forbidden Forest. “I know you’re there, Darwish! Show yourself or risk expulsion!” Loki yelled over the wind.
A figure slowly emerged, hands up and face panicked. “Professor Laufeyson! Please don’t expel me. I was just standing guard!”
Loki glowered at the student. “Quit your whining, you mewling quim! Where are the other two?”
The student’s eyes widened as he stammered, “P-P-Pom and Freya went into the forest to find her brother.”
Loki’s expression nearly lost its composure in a fit of anger, but he forced it together. Through clenched teeth he said, “take yourself to the Headmistress, now! And tell her to wait to expel you until I return. If she - the girls are dead, then expulsion will be the least of your punishment, I promise you that.”
The boy nearly tripped on his way back to the castle, glancing back at Loki with a horrified face. Loki flicked his wrist and an orb of green light shot into the forest. He rolled his shoulders once and ran into the dark.
***
“Freya, did you hear that?” Pom said, her voice a small squeak.
The woods were cold and night had become foggy. You took her hand and rubbed the top of it as you ventured deeper into the forest. There were all sorts of creaks and snaps, hissing and buzzing. It was when the forest quieted down that you grew concerned. No crickets or owls; not even the sound of a scurrying mouse.
“Why is it so quiet?” You whispered.
A crash sounded from the bushes beside you, and you and Pom fell backwards as a young centaur screamed at the top of his lungs. The light brown horse half of his body had a frightful gash along the side, revealing parts of his intestines. A large black mass jumped from where the centaur came and landed on the creature.
“No! Please! Help me!” The centaur screamed.
You and Pom gagged at the sight as this larger creature snapped its jaws and bit down on the centaur’s throat. You wished you did not know the sound of a breaking neck, but that last crack was forever seared into your mind.
The creature was an enormous black haired wolf. It was thrice the size of any normal wolf you had ever seen. Its gums were blood red and its yellowish teeth were as long as your forearm. You shivered underneath the cloak and prayed that the centaur’s blood was enough to keep your scent away.
“Freya, we can’t do this, we have to leave, oh my god!” Pom said, wriggling away.
“Wait!” you said, pulling out our wand. “Homenum revelio!” A line of light shot from your wand and you felt a pressure just above you, as if something was leading you towards the left grove of trees.
You lifted Pom up by the hand and ran towards the trees, following the line of light. The creature was busy feasting on the unfortunate centaur as you slipped away. Beyond the grove of trees, there was an area that was covered in rock formations. Some dipped low and others created tricky hills to climb over. The spell led you down a steep rock into an area where several trees had been snapped in half and broken - no doubt by the monster you evaded. But just below a cracked log, the light of the spell disappeared.
A groan came from underneath the log. Your heart leapt. Pom shuffled away from you and ran towards the sound.
“Ken! Oh my god, Freya! It’s him!” Pom said, crying. She pulled out her wand and cast a levitation spell to remove the log from his body. His right leg was broken and his left arm was missing.
“Dear god, Ken,” you said, taking off the cloak.
“You...found..me...” he said in ragged breaths. The left arm that was missing had crystals of ice around the stump.
“He would’ve bled to death if you hadn’t frozen that,” you said.
A twig snapped, and you heard growling from between the trees. Your stomach dropped as Ken moaned. “Kill me, don’t let that thing get me, please! Just kill me now!”
Helping Pom lift him up, you waited until she was sure she could support his weight. “You two go, I’ll distract it.” You took the cloak and wrapped it around her and Ken.
Pom looked at you with tears in her eyes. “Freya, what if it gets you!”
“Just go!” You threw your arm out and shot red sparks between the trees, away from them.
The wolf shot through the bushes, soared above you, and landed between the trees in a vicious snarl. If you had hesitated even one more second, it would have found the three of you.
You climbed up and helped Pom lift Ken, who was trying to conceal his pain poorly. He mumbled and yelped, making all sorts of noise. “Get out of here and take him to the infirmary!”
The wolf howled as Pom and Ken escaped through the trees and you ran in the opposite direction. You heard the creature behind you and glanced over your shoulder as you saw it only a few feet away. The white of its teeth gleamed maliciously in the moonlight, and its mouth was stained with fresh blood. There was no way you would outrun that thing.
“Bombarda!” The ground exploded behind you in a hopeful effort to slow the wolf down. You jumped towards thicker sections of trees you thought were tight enough to protect you, but you heard them groan and give way to the gigantic wolf in a loud crash.
It growled behind you as you threw another exploding spell. This time, the creature dodged it and jumped up on the trunk of a large tree, gripping it with its long dextrous claws. You kept running and approached the bottom of a steep slab of stone covered in dark vines. It was too steep to climb. The wolf’s yellow eyes glowed as it eyed you with a crazed sort of hunger. It growled deep in its throat, ready to rush you.
You raised your wand, ready to deliver the killing curse, not even sure if it would work since you had never tried it. You knew they might send you to Azkaban for it, but you would rather die of a dementor’s kiss than be eviscerated like that centaur.
“Avada-” you said, and then your hand caught on something. A black vine twisted around the hand that your wand was in, which prevented you from moving.
The wolf jumped to the ground and stalked you slowly with what seemed to be a demented grin on its face. The gleam in its eyes now twinkled.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you said, struggling against the black vines and trying to untangle yourself with your free hand.
It opened its mouth, revealing a blood red tongue and horrible breath, and you wondered if this was the last thing you would ever see.
A green light whipped right past your face and the wolf was knocked off balance. You looked up and saw Professor Laufeyson with green fire blazing in his hands. You painfully slipped your hand out of the vine and ran to his side. “How did you find me?”
“I will answer your inquiries after we deal with a more pressing matter,” he said, throwing you a glare. The creature recovered and snarled at you and Professor Laufeyson.
It snapped its teeth, and drool fell from its lips. Professor Laufeyson raised his hands. “So, you’re Fenris, the dreaded beast of the Dark One,” he said, giving it a casual look. “Little smaller than I thought.”
It growled and lunged as Professor Laufeyson threw burning green balls of flame at it. It landed too close and swiped its massively sharp claws towards you. Professor Laufeyson shoved you aside and was knocked sideways against a tree.
“Professor!” you ran to his side and helped him sit up. The creature had raked two claws along his left side in deep wounds that stained half of his shirt with blood. His blood continued to flow at an alarming rate.
“Looks like I can’t get past the guard dog tonight,” he said with a pained laugh. “You might want to hold on, Miss Eves,” he said.
It occurred to you right away what he was going to do, and you immediately gripped his arm and felt your whole body twist around for a painful second as the wolf raised its claws again to strike you. One moment you were in the forest, and the next, you were in a dimly lit room.
You both swayed after Professor Laufeyson apparated you out of the forest. You recovered quickly, but Professor Laufeyson, on the other hand, swayed dangerously; nearly knocking over the nearby coat stand. You took him by the arm and led him to a four poster bed in the centre of the room.
“Are we in your room?” You said, realizing where you were.
He groaned, blinking several times. “Yes.”
You knelt in front of him and looked at his shirt; he was still bleeding profusely. “You need to get to the infirmary, you’re losing too much blood, sir.”
He shook his head lazily. “My shelf, bottom drawer...Blue vial...pour it on the wound…”
“What? I’m sure Volstagg will be a much better medic-”
“It’s poison. I need the antidote now,” he said, unbuttoning his shirt.
You ran to the shelf at the corner of the room and retrieved the vial. He laid back on his elbows, completely shirtless, and you told yourself this was no moment for leering. You glued your eyes to his wounds and poured the contents of the vial over them. He winced as the liquid bubbled over his wounds and hardened to a bluish coloured scab. The bleeding finally stopped. “Do you have bandages?” you said.
He nodded towards the shelf again and you opened several drawers, one of which contained a strange silver bowl with swirls of blue and white light. You closed that drawer and found the bandages in another.
You wrapped his abdomen in white gauze gently as he watched you quietly. Then, you left him to wet a cloth to clean the blood off. When you returned with the cloth, he was half sitting and half laying on the bed, fatigue in his eyes.
“Are you still dying?” you said, as you guided his head to the pillow.
His eyes closed, and he shook his head. “Sleeping...side effect….it’s fine.”
You smiled at his slurred speech and leaned over him to slip off his shoes. You brought the cloth to his chest and started to wipe the blood away, careful to not touch the covered wounds. After a few minutes, you thought he was asleep and turned to get up, when he grabbed you by the hand.
“Stay,” he said in a thick, sleepy voice.
Your heart fluttered as you stood there wondering what to do. His hand pulled on your arm and you nearly fell into bed beside him. You sat up against the headboard and he leaned away from his pillow until his head was in your lap. You sat there like a statue for several minutes, shocked. Only when his breathing evened out and he was truly asleep, could you relax. His head was warm on your lap and you wondered just how strong the side effects of that antidote were. His black hair was slightly greasy and matted, though it smelled quite wonderful, so you took your chance and lightly ran your fingers through it. It was utterly soft, and you nearly froze again when he snuggled closer in your lap and rubbed his face on your thigh with a tired sigh. Your body reacted with heat between your legs and you felt a rush of blood to your cheeks. This was certainly not the time to become a feverish mess, so you breathed in and out, calming yourself down.
You ran your hands over his hair in soft caresses and for that small moment, forgot anything you had to be worried about.
No thoughts only Princess Bride au where Sam, Dream or Sapnap (honestly any of them can work take your pick of minecraft boy) is Westley and I'm Buttercup -🍉
Oh gosh 🍉 you’re brain is so big!!!! So Imma use Dream because I have ideas….. Did I basically write the movie in this drabble just changing the names? Yes. Do I regret it? Hell no lol. I hope you enjoy!!! (I added a page break because it’s pretty long lol)
So Clay is a farmhand on your father’s farm that you are absolutely infatuated with. He does anything and everything you ask with a small smirk and an “as you wish”. As you spend more time together, you two fall in love. Clay decides that he needs to go across the sea so he can make a fortune before he can marry you. You beg him not to go, because you love him and he loves you too and that was all you need, but he goes anyway. He leaves you with a kiss on your lips and a promise to always come back for you. But he never did come back.
News came back that Clay’s ship was attacked by a powerful pirate that goes by the name Dream. The news broke your heart and you locked yourself in your room and swore you would never love again.
A few years go by and a new King is crowned. King Schlatt bumps into you one day and is stunned by your beauty and immediately declares that you will be his new partner. You try to refuse, but he has none of it. He announces to the kingdom that they will have a new member in the royal family in a few days time. But you knew you would never love Schlatt. After the announcement you went out to clear your mind on a horseback ride. You run into three men who claimed to be lost, and you with your big heart stop to help them but you quickly come to regret it as the biggest and strongest one, grabs you at a pressure point and you pass out.
When you come to, you’re on a boat and the three men are sitting around staring at you. “Oh good. You’re awake!” One of them cheers, eerily cheery for kidnappers. “I was really worried I grabbed the wrong point but you were breathing so it helped me calm down a little bit… I’m Sapnap!” The big guy introduces himself. “Sapnap!” the shortest one hisses out, “you’re not supposed to tell them our names!” “Oops. Sorry George” ‘Sapnap’ apologizes. “SAPNAP!” The one he called George, “Bad tell him that he’s an idiot!” George shrieks, turning to the third man. ‘Bad’ faces palms at the two in front of him. “Great… Just great… You both have literally told them all of our names” And even though you’re in a really bad position, you can’t help but laugh at the idiocracy of the three. “Oh gosh. If this is how you act, the King and his men are definitely going to find you and when he does, you’re going to be in for it” you laugh, rolling your eyes at the three. They seem to take a little bit of offense at what you say, but George and Sapnap begin to squabble with each other and then Bad yells at them to shut up and everything falls silent. At one point, George asks if they’re being followed and while they’re distracted you take the chance and jump over the side of the boat and begin to swim away from them. But then something brushes your leg and you freeze. “There are eels in the water! Deadly eels that are just waiting to eat you,” Bad taunts from the boat and you begin to panic. An eel creeps up beside you and before it can take a bite out of you, you’re pulled back into the boat by the strong hands of Sapnap. “Are you okay?” He asks softly after he’s sure you’re steady in the boat. You can only nod, too scared to speak. “Good… Just don’t do that again,” he scolds gently. And even though these three have kidnapped you, you can’t help but begin to grow a soft spot for the gentle giant.
Turns out you were being followed. Sapnap is forced to carry you three up the cliff as a stranger, wearing a green shirt and a white mask, begins to climb the rope behind you. Bad yells at him to climb faster, which doesn’t help, but you make it to the top before the stranger catches you and Bad cuts the rope. The stranger doesn’t fall though, just continues to climb the mountain. Bad instructs you guys to keep moving but George insists on staying behind to kill the man. Bad rolls his eyes, but let’s him and so you three run away, well Bad and Sapnap run because you’re still being carried by Sapnap.
You three watch as the stranger and George fight beautifully but at the end, the masked man comes out on top, knocking George unconscious and running toward you guys. Bad let’s out a loud yell in frustration and commands Sapnap to give you to him and then demands that Sapnap kill the man by any means necessary. Bad carries you off further down the path before sitting you down and turning to watch the battle between Sapnap and the stranger. He lets out a frustrated yell again as Sapnap is also rendered unconscious. Bad quickly blindfolds you and pulls out his knife and presses it to your throat. “If you take another step closer I’ll kill them!” You hear Bad call out to someone… the stranger. He must not stop moving because the knife gets pressed into your throat further causing you to let out a small gasp and you make an attempt to move away. You listen as the stranger makes a deal with Bad and listen as Bad debates about which cup to drink from. The cup that is laced with the powder that will knock the other unconscious and allow the one that remains awake to get away with you. You listen as Bad toasts and the two drink, and you listen as Bad boasts about being smarter than the other man, only to have his laughter cut short as he falls asleep. The blindfold is removed from your eyes and you meet the beautiful green eyes of the stranger that look very familiar, you don’t get to stare long because he moves away and cuts the binds from your wrists and legs before dragging you away.
After getting a bit away, the man pushes you into a rock and demands that you catch your breath. As you’re seated, you begin to beg with the man, asking him what he wants and that any ransom he asks he will get. The man laughs in your face and mocks you and your ‘love’. You spit at him that you do not love the King and that you have loved more deeply than he could ever understand. The man scoffs and rolls his eyes before grabbing your arm again and running again.
Once again, after a while of running, he forces you to sit and catch your breath once more. This time you confront him about his identity, “I know who you are,” you spit out, seated on the rock, “You’re Dream… admit it” The man smirks and gives you a mock bow, “Sure am Your Highness. What can I do for you?” he asks so cockily. You tell him that he can die a most slow and painful death. Dream lets out another laugh, “And why would you wish such a thing.” “Because you killed my love” He is silent for a second before shrugging, “Maybe… I’ve killed a lot of people. Who was this love of yours?” And you can’t help it, but you begin to describe him. You think of his blonde hair, his emerald green eyes, his kind smile and warm heart… Your Clay. Dream then tells you that he remembers Clay. He remembers killing him and how he didn’t beg or plead, he just accepted it but before he died, he told of you and how you were his everything. But then he got really defensive and began to shout at you, calling you faithless and mocking you for getting engaged to the King. You cannot help but scream at him, “I DIED THAT DAY!” You noticed Schlatt’s horses and claim that Dream can die too for all you care and so you push him as hard as you can down the hill. As he’s falling you hear him call the words that you’re love would always say to you, “As you wish!” Your heart aches and you begin to run toward him, only to trip and fall down the hill to.
Once at the bottom, you lay on the ground, catching your breath. As you do, Clay, his white mask now gone, moves and hovers over you. “Are you okay? Can you move?” But you don’t care about yourself at the moment, “You’re alive” you breathe out, your hand coming up to cup his face. “I told you I would come back, my love. I’m back.” and you just pull him in and press a long and passionate kiss on his lips. Five years of pain and longing and missing your lover pour into the kiss. A warmth that you haven’t felt since you kissed Clay goodbye fills your entire body and causes your toes to curl. “I love you so much” you murmur to him once he pulls back, “I love you too so much more.”
Once you two get up, you run to the fire swap. You’re a little nervous, but you know that Clay will take care of you. You ask Clay what had happened on that ship 5 years ago. Clay begins to tell you the story of how he became Dream as you two practically dance through the fire swamp. It feels so good to be back in Clay’s arms as he twirls you around trees and fire spurts that shoot up from the ground. The warmth flutters in your heart again as Clay tells you that he now plans on retiring since he found you, his true love once again. You two share a sweet moment and another kiss before you make your way through the dangerous swamp. You have some close encounters, but make it out of the swamp safely…. Unfortunately you two are not alone when you exit.
Schlatt meets you on the other side of the swamp and you begin to get surrounded by his men and you knew how this would end. “Promise you won’t hurt him if I come with you!” You shout to your fiance. Schlatt makes this promise and you turn to Clay who is looking at you in the utmost shock, “What?” he whispers. “I died the day you died Clay… I could not handle it if you died again” you whisper back to him, “I know you’ll return to me again one day” and then you’re whisked away by Schlatt back to the castle.
You mope around the castle and Schlatt notices. He blames it on the fact his father is in bad health, who dies later that night, but no one truly believes him. You begin to have nightmares as your and Schlatt’s wedding grows closer. After waking from a particularly terrible one, you run to Schaltt’s office and tell him that you don’t want to marry him, that you want to marry Clay. Schlatt surprisingly agrees, claiming to not wanting to make you unhappy or dead. He agrees to send out a letter to Dream’s ships and if Clay wants you, he can marry you but if he doesn’t to please consider marrying him to killing yourself, to which you agree.
Days go by and you hear nothing, and you walk into his room and he greets you. He tells you of what is going to happen, but he slips up and you find out that he never attempted to contact Clay. So you yell at him, you insult him, and as you tell him that Clay will always come for you because you love each other, you drive him off the metaphorical edge. He very angrily throws you into your room and locks you in there before storming off. You bang and kick at the door, trying to get out but nothing. Finally you settle yourself by the fire and begin to just think of your true love Clay.
The sun sets and you are forced to get ready for a wedding you do not wish to be a part of. Schlatt enters your room and helps you adjust your outfit. You tell him once again that Clay will save you. But you find yourself at the altar listening to a priest who you have to try really hard not to laugh at (I am literally thinking of Quackity just using one of his silly voices just officiating a wedding lol). A commotion begins to happen outside and Schlatt begins to panic silently and you can tell. So you taunt him a bit, but then he demands Quackity to call you married “partner and partner” and then you’re dragged to the honeymoon suite. You can’t help but go dumbly because you’re so shocked at the fact that you just got married to Schlatt and Clay didn’t come to save you. As you’re being escorted to your room, you make the decision that you’re going to do it. If you cannot be with the one you love, you’re going to kill yourself.
You get to the room and pull out the dagger, hold it to your chest, and just as you are about to plunge it into your chest, the sweet voice of your lover calls from behind you, “Are you sure you want to do that, love? I mean I wouldn’t be able to kiss you there if you split your chest open.” You head snaps to the bed to find Clay laying there motionless, but his eyes are trained on you. You throw the dagger on the desk before running over to Clay and throwing yourself down on top of him and kiss him over and over again. “Clay, I’m so sorry. I’m so so sorry.” you apologize after you pull back. His eyebrows raise at the apology, “What have you done now?” “I got married. I didn’t want to, but everything happened so fast that I did.” “It didn’t happen” “Yes it did” “Did you say I do?” “Well no but-” “Then it doesn’t count and you aren’t married. Didn’t say it, didn’t do it… Wouldn’t you say so your highness.” Clay’s eyes drift to the doorway causing yours to follow. There stands a pissed of Schlatt, “You forget one technicallity… Whatever, it will all be fixed in a moment” he declares before drawing out a sword. Then Schlatt and Clay begin a back and forth, with Clay doing most of the talking, his words just confusing Schlatt. After his epic speech, Clay slowly rises from the bed and holds a sword to Schlatt and demands that Schlatt drop his weapon. Fear now swimming in his eyes, Schlatt does everything Clay commands even sitting in a chair. Schlatt even allows you to tie him up extremely tightly.
Suddenly, George walks into the bedroom, surprising the hell out of you. “Where’s Sapnap and Bad?” Clay asks George, causing the shock and surprise to ring further in you, “I thought they were with you!” George responds. Since when were they all friends? A voice calls to you from outside the window. You and George help Clay to look outside and there you find Bad and Sapnap standing next to five white horses. “We found the stables!” Bad calls to you three. “And there were five horses and there were five of us if we found Y/N!” “Hi Y/N!!!” Sapnap interrupts waving frantically to you. A soft grin graces your face as you return the wave to the gentle giant who you def had a soft spot for now. “So we took them!” Bad finishes. You stare at each other for a while before Sapnap holds his arms out and motions to you. You giggle and step onto the window ledge and jump down, somehow completely trusting this giant and his friends who had tried to kill you. Sapnap catches you and gently puts you down on the ground before catching George and Clay too. “Hey, uhhhh… I just wanted to apologize for kidnapping you a few days ago,” Bad claims stepping forward, a sheepish look on his face. “We were just doing what we were hired too… That doesn’t make it right though and we’re sorry.” You give the man a soft smile, “It’s okay. I forgive you… What you did helped me find my love again so it was worth it in the end.” You claim as you turn and cuddle into Clay’s side. Clay grins down at you and kisses the top of your head before pecking your lips. “Alright then… Let’s get out of here.”
And so the five of you ride off and away from the castle, not really sure where you’re going. You ride for many hours before you finally feel it, the weight being lifted off of your shoulders. You stop and get off of your horses. “I think this might be a good place to settle down,” George claims looking around at the wide open area. “Yeah! I agree!” Sapnap shouts, jumping down beside him. You and Clay also hop off of your horses and move slightly away from the other three. “What do you think, love?” Clay asks quietly. You give a quick glance around before locking your gaze with his, “I think it’s perfect. I want to start our new life here… With our new friends.” A grin graces Clay’s face as his hand comes up to cup your cheek. He moves his face close to yours, so close you can feel his breath brushing against your slightly parted lips. “As you wish”
Can’t Fight This Feeling
-23-
I felt like everything was going in slow motion. The realization that the monster was still there, going back to Starcourt if it wasn’t already there. My friends were there.
Steve was there.
Whatever was going to happen was going to happen at the mall, that was where this was going to end.
I should’ve gone with them. I knew Dustin and Erica would be safe at the hilltop. I knew it and I should’ve spoken up more. I couldn’t just stand by and let them fight this thing when I’m standing doing nothing.
“Lou?”
I looked next to me to Dustin just as I noticed the wetness on my cheeks from the tears.
“Are you okay?” he asked me.
I sniffled and wiped my nose as I looked down at my shoes, “I’m scared,” I admitted, looking back up at him, “I -I just don’t know what to do.”
Dustin sighed deeply and looked from me to the bottom of the hill, “Go,” he told me gently, looking back to me, “I hid my bike here, remember? Erica and I will be fine, but you’ll be too worried to be any help,” he said jokingly.
I shook my head, the thoughts I previously had about leaving Erica and Dustin disappearing quickly. I didn’t want to leave them either. I was between a rock and a hard place.
“No,” I said instantly, “Dust...I don’t want to leave you guys alone. If something happened here and I wasn’t around...I dont know what I’d do, Dustin. Really, I think I’d die if something happened to you.”
A small grin crossed his face, “We’d be able to see something coming, Lou. Besides, whatever the demogorgan wants- probably El- is still at the mall by the looks of it. Erica and I will be fine, but you’ll be here internally and externally freaking out. You know we’ll be safe. And I know you’ll be safe if you go there.”
I shook my head immediately, “Dust, no. There’s no way I’d-“
“Lou,” he said, cutting me off quickly, “I love you, but you’re going to be more of a liability here worrying about everyone at the mall, then you would be just at the mall. I’m not worried about you going there because I know-“ he stopped himself.
Dustin took a deep breath and nodded once, “I know Steve would do whatever it takes to keep you safe, Lou.”
My heart fluttered at his words. Dustin thought the same way I did.
Dustin put his hands on my shoulders, staring me right in the eyes, “Go down the hill and get my bike, Louise. Please.”
I bit my lip and nodded to him, “The second-the absolute second this is over, I’ll come back here to get both of you,” I told him stepping backwards out of his grasp.
He grinned up at me, “I know.”
I quickly reached out and grabbed Dustin, pulling him into a hug which he reciprocated hastily.
“I love you, Dusty,” I murmered.
“Love you too, Lou,” I heard him say quietly.
I pulled away from him, “I’ll be back soon,” I promised, taking a few steps back.
He nodded, “Go,” he implored.
I breathed out, nodding to him quickly, before turning and, carefully, running down the hill to the spot where I met Dustin a week earlier with moms car. I went to the tree line and grabbed his trusty bike, which was still hidden among the trees. I walked it over to the road and got on it as fast as I could without falling over, and began peddling quickly in the direction of Starcourt.
All I had was the cool breeze hitting my face and sounds of my steady breathing and wheels rolling on pavement. I was scared. Absolutely terrified.
I was scared for my friends at the mall.
I was scared for Steve. I was being honest when I told him I wasn’t sure what I would do if something happened to him and I wasn’t there.
I was scared for Dustin and Erica alone on the hilltop.
I was scared for the rest of Hawkins...this monster seemed more dangerous than the ones Dustin and Steve told us about.
My thoughts just kept repeating those same things over and over again. I couldn’t think of anything else. The ride was taking forever. My legs were burning. After the events of the past 24 hours or so, my body felt like it was giving up.
Every inch of me was in the worst pain imaginable. I was breathing heavily and felt like I was on the verge of passing out.
But as I rode past the empty businesses on Main Street and down the familiar roads of Hawkins and saw the bright flickering lights of Starcourt come into focus all the pain I was in was worth it, because I knew I was going to be able to help them. Somehow.
As I got closer to the doors of the mall I saw three different cars.
The Wheeler’s station wagon. Billy’s car that was smoking heavily.
And the ToddFather. I stopped peddling and jumped off the bike, running over to the yellow convertible that I had last saw Steve and Robin leaving me to get to. The front was smashed up but they weren’t in it.
They had to have gotten out themselves, I told myself. Billy hadn’t gotten them, a monster hadn’t gotten them. They were okay.
I ran towards the doors and ran into the mall without breaking my stride. I heard loud popping and banging and fizzing noises. As I ran to the food court, I saw the fireworks lighting up the ceiling.
I was speechless watching them go off. It wasn’t until a looked a bit further down from the sparkling display that I saw this...blob of a monster standing and swaying trying to get out of the halo of bright lights that were surrounding it.
I took a few faltering steps back in absolute shock about what was in front of me. This was the monster that was threatening all of us.
I began running to the escalator, I knew the fireworks were coming from above and I just knew it was the party tossing them onto the monster to distract it while Hopper, Mrs. Byers and Murray tried to close the gate.
Once I reached the second floor I looked along the railing and saw Steve leaning over it with his hand outstretched behind him, waiting for Robin to hand him a lit firework.
“Steve!” I shouted as loudly as I could, as I began jogging to him.
He looked around quickly before he found me. I could see the shock and confusion on his face a got closer to him.
I ran to him and he opened his arms without another thought. I ran right into the hug, wrapping my arms around his neck as he held me to him tightly around my waist.
“What are you doing here?” he asked me.
He pulled away from me and put both of his hands on each side of my face, “I just...needed to make sure you were gonna be okay. Dustin and Erica are okay at the top of the hill...this is where the fight is.”
“I wish you would have listened to me,” he told me quietly.
“Would you have listened to me?” I asked him back.
He let out a small laugh, “No, probably not,” he said lowering his hands.
“Hey? Lovebirds!” Robin shouted.
I looked to her quickly, “Hate to break this up but we have a few more important things to deal with,” she said as she lit a firework and tossed it over the railing.
Steve took my hand and we went over to the last remaining unlit firework on the floor, Robin grabbed it and lit it, shoving it into my unoccupied hand, “You get the last one, make it good!” she instructed.
Without thinking twice about it I turned toward the railing, looked at the giant monster in the middle of the food court, surrounding my sparkling lights and fizzing sounds. I leaned as far over the railing as I could and threw the firework, it started falling down by the monsters face before it exploded into blue and red lights.
There was only one more pop after ours, I looked to Steve, “Is everyone out?”
He shook his head, “I - yeah I mean, I think so.”
The monster below us roared loudly, realizing that there wasn’t anymore blinding light and noises to distract it from what it must have been there for.
“El,” Steve whispered from next to me.
I looked over to him and saw him looking down at the food court, I followed his eye sight and saw El laying on the ground of the food court with Billy hovering over her.
“We have to help her!” I told him as I let go of his hand.
Before he could answer me I was already rushing toward the escalator.
“Hey-hey- Lou! Stop!” he called out after me.
I stopped only when I felt his hand on my wrist, “Lou, just wait a second!”
I turned to him, “We have to help her!” I told him sternly with tears beginning to form in my eyes, “we have to get to her.”
I saw the battle going on in his head, his eyes were moving rapidly back and forth trying to figure out something.
“Guys?”
I looked behind Steve to see Robin looking over the railing with a shocked expression.
I looked over the railing at the same time Steve did and saw Billy had left El’s side and was walking to the monster in the midst of the flashing lights and fires that had broken out around the food court.
The monster was snarling and roaring, but I lept my eyes stuck to Billy. Unsure of what he was doing.
The monster had taken a few steps closer to Billy, and by extension, El. El was cowering in fear behind Billy.
But then something shot out of the monster mouth and Billy lifted his hands up taking the brunt of the attack.
Almost like he was...protecting Eleven.
I let out a small gasp as I heard Billy screaming, along with the screeching of the monster.
There was a tentacle from the monster that came out and went into Billy’s side. Billy was hunched over in pain. Another tentacle from the other side of the monster came out and went to Billy’s other side. Billy was groaning in pain and the monster continued to screech in his face.
I couldn’t look away from the sight below us. I was in shock watching everything unfold. Steve and I were squeezing each other’s hands. I couldn’t look away to look at him to see how he felt.
The monster was going to kill Billy. Right there in the Starcourt mall food court. Right in front of all of us, including his little step sister, Max.
More tentacles began sprouting up from the monster and began attaching themselves onto Billy.
Billy screamed out in agony as his hands dropped from the front of him, and his body fell back limp, the only thing holding him up was the monster, before he finally fell forwards onto his knees.
The monster opened its mouth roaring in Billy’s face, as Billy screamed loudly. Another tentacle shot out of the monsters mouth and went for Billy’s chest.
From somewhere in the mall I could hear Max screaming out his name. The tentacles retracted from Billy’s body and he fell to the side, landing on his back.
My chest tightened and tears welled immediately in my eyes. He gave himself up to protect El. I wasn’t sure what she did or said to him, but he must have...I don’t know, come back to his senses. Broken free of whatever hold the monster had on him.
I looked over to Steve and saw his mouth hanging open, looking down at Billy lying on the ground.
“Is he dead?” he asked quietly.
I looked back to Billy’s body, “I don’t know,” I answered honestly.
The monster began screeching loudly and stumbling backwards.
I gasped as it loudly snarled, “What’s going on?” I cried.
Steve pulled me back just at the right second as the monster stumbled into the railing of the second floor where we were. The monster teetered for a moment before falling over.
We ran back to the railing and looked over at it, laying among the flames.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mike and Max going over to El, with Mike hugging her instantly. Max walked slowly to Billy and got on her knees.
I looked back to Robin and Steve, “Come on,” I implored, rushing towards the escalator to go to them.
I ran down the escalator and into the food court, over to Mike, El and Max.
“Are you guys okay?” I asked, falling to my knees as I made it to them.
El looked up to me, wide eyed before looking back to Max, who was going over to Billy’s body.
I wrapped an arm around El and brought her close to me, “El are you okay?” I asked again.
“No,” she whispered as she looked over to Max, kneeling next to Billy just a few feet from us.
I let go of El as Mike wrapped an arm around her tightly. I watched Max but didn’t know what to do or say to her.
I felt an arm slip around my shoulder and didn’t need to looked up to know it was Steve kneeling next to me.
El removed herself from Mike and walked over to Max, falling to her knees next to her where she wrapped her arms around her and pulled Max to her in a hug as Max sobbed.
My eyes filled with tears watching the two of them together. El was saying reassuring words to Max, trying to help calm her down. El looked back to us, unsure of what to do, but none of us knew what to do at that point either.
The rest of the group had finally come down and were all around us. Lucas immediately went to Max and El, where El let go of Max and Lucas held onto her, letting her sob into his shoulder, with Mike going back to El’s side immediately.
We all just stayed there quietly, unable to articulate our emotions at that moment. What was there to do or say? This wasn’t the outcome any of us hoped for.
The silence was broken by people running into the food court in camouflage uniforms and helmets carrying large assault weapons. They were all yelling at us quickly and loudly and I couldn’t make out a word they were saying.
We all got up quickly with our hands raised, with Steve stepping in front of me to put distance between us.
“Dr. Owens sent us, we’re with the national guard! Is this the only monster?” one of them yelled once the rest of the guards stopped yelling.
We all sheepishly nodded our heads, “Lower your weapons!” he called over his shoulder to the others. They all simultaneously lowered their guns and in turn, we dropped our hands slowly.
“We’re going to get this cleaned up,” he told us, “when the police or anyone asks you, what we had here tonight at Starcourt was a massive fire. Understood?”
I took a deep breath and nodded my head, unsure of how, exactly this was going to be cleaned up.
The guard sighed and nodded back to us, “You’re all free to leave then. Go,” he instructed.
Steve turned to me immediately, “Come on, Lou,” he whispered.
I looked around him to see Max and El. Max was silently crying with Lucas and El both with arms around her leading her out.
“Let’s go outside, Lou,” Steve said bringing my attention back to him.
I looked at him and nodded, I took his hand in mine and let him lead me out.
