About:

A tertiary character from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures parts one and two. Gang leader in the toughest slums in late Victorian period London, near White Chapel. Traveled extensively before settling in the slums to oust the former gang leader and start his own reign with the alliances he made between other gangs, locals, and people he met around the world.

Background:

Born during the late Victorian Period in the slums of London where classism, capitalism, and xenophobia rule (gee, doesn’t that sound familiar?), Robert has seen it all. He’s been in enough scraps, he can tell a good person from a cruel person by the scent of their sweat. As such, he will sometimes antagonize a person to get a better read on them if they are particularly good at hiding their emotions. Even Narcissists can’t get past His nose or survival-honed instincts!

Though marked by a deep, permanent facial scar stretching from the bridge of his nose to his chin, Robert is much more than a seasoned robber and conman. Empathetic to a fault, he worries about those he gets to know, and it’s given him a Robin Hood complex: steal from the rich to feed the poor. Even when he becomes rich himself, he keeps his dream to better the lives of the city’s outcasts, and uses his newfound wealth, and the sudden social class changes it gives him, to start making changes for the better! He employs his friends and other “unemployable” workers, finding their special strengths that others might overlook and gives them the resources they need to pursue their dreams (like Smokey Brown changing from a street thief to a town mayor). He starts humanitarian efforts around the world, rebuilding broken streets like his hometown slum, researching medicine to heal the sick, preserving cultures and land for indigenous people and animals, and… secretly…searching for supernatural threats to all of humanity.

His fear that the whole world will be subjected to the same levels of cruelty he’s grown up with keeps him on his toes his whole life. He will never turn his back on danger to those he cares about… Even if that danger is far too powerful for him to face with his own martial art prowess and weapon proficiency. In the words of an infamous general, “torture will not work” on him. For a man who’s already “seen Hell”, nothing humans do will shake him. The only things this man fears are supernatural forces that can take away everything he loves in an instant.

Depending on the verse and time setting, this muse can be played as a child; a youth traveling on ships and caravans seeing the world; a scrappy young gangster joshing with his best friends and terrorizing the public; a narrating sidekick; a deeply traumatized young man trying to figure out how to keep himself and his friends’ lives together without falling apart himself; a miner following his nose and a dream; an oil baron with No idea how to deal with his new social class or all the people suddenly out to rob him of everything; an oil tycoon settled into his role of dismissing politicians and anyone else trying to use his wealth for their gain and setting his sights on his own dream of helping the world and the less fortunate; a philanthropist and humanitarian trying to save art and culture from WWI and II and deport endangered citizens from the Axil’s clutches; a heartbroken godfather; a desperate grand godfather trying to help raise a boy who reminds him so much of everything he’s loved and lost, including his younger self; a pioneer for human health, technology, habitat preservation, animal rights protection, and researching the supernatural and mythical; a foster father for New York’s future mayor; and a proud great grandfather who dotes on his adopted family, and loves his work, his employees and friends around the world, and still travels extensively despite being an octogenarian.

I can easily adapt either gangster version of him, or oil baron/supernatural hunter version for a superhero series, crime drama, or other modern shows. Monarch/SHIELD/ etc could have some competition from a private organization.

i still don’t have a brain! ah!!!! but i do have ears for listening! i actually listened to a lot of stuff that i ended up not liking as much, last month, but i still have plenty to rec.

Remnants — (ep1-2 early access) a dark fantasy mystery anthology. hard to describe without giving anything away. i love everything by Hanging Sloth (creator of SBR, NQD and Clockwork Bird), so i knew that i was very likely to enjoy this regardless of the premise… but my god, absolutely surreal vibes. the sound design is breathtaking! feeling very grateful to be a HS patron right now. keep an eye out for this one coming 15th july! subscribe now and don’t miss it.

Mockery Manor — (3 seasons, 37 eps + miniseries, between seasons) a murder mystery set at a theme park with a comedic twist. i didn’t think this was going to be my thing and i was so wrong. the protags are twin sisters with plenty of baggage between them. their shenanigans and banter keep the tone light even when the plot takes dark turns. looking forward to s4!

Limelight: The Specialist — (5 eps, complete) self-described as a “dark medical thriller” set in rural wales. Limelight series are generally good but satisfying endings are hit or miss; this one was VERY well-paced, with a satisfying payoff, and gave me hope for a series 2 in future. i loved the execution of the gruesome mystery and i loved the protagonist to pieces.

Close Your Eyes — (1 season, 9 eps, s2 in production) having recently listened to RQ’s Neon Inkwell: The Pit Below Paradise, which also centers around cult dynamics, i found this to be a very fun contrast. here we see how someone can be immersed and isolated by a cult, regardless of their personal skepticism or strength of will. the suspense was so delicious i had to listen to all nine episodes in a row. ends on an incredible cliffhanger — can’t WAIT for season 2.

The Silt Verses — (44 eps, finale soon) a grim religious fantasy dystopia. some of the most intricate and fascinating worldbuilding i’ve ever seen. huge cast. i know that everyone in the AD space has rec’d this pod a hundred times over, but i can’t stress enough how it’s one of my very favorite stories in the medium. the penultimate ep left off on an absolutely deranged note and i have no idea what’s coming! so exciting, if you’ve been waiting to check this one out — now might be the time!

Dice Shame — (2 seasons, 200+ eps, ongoing) classic dnd actual play ft. Harlan Guthrie of Malevolent fame, and his equally charismatic friends and family. i don’t listen to a lot of APs bc i have trouble focusing on such long episodes but i just love the chemistry of this party. slapping it on the rec list bc the current storyline has me hooked!!

Bridgewater — (1 season, 22 eps, ???) supernatural mystery, notably starring Misha Collins as the protagonist. this one has a lot of complicated family dynamics read: mommy AND daddy issues. the length of the series is just enough to let you spawn several of your own theories, which is fun, and i was really pleased that i was able to predict the true conflict and identify the antagonist. excellent use of foreshadowing etc, biggest props to Lauren Shippen of The Bright Sessions fame.

Consumed — (12 episodes) small town horror/mystery through the eyes of a stranded newcomer. this one did NOT go where i expected it to, because i started it before i listened to Bridgewater; they’re set in the same universe, so the same worldbuilding applies. i would honestly recommend listening to this one FIRST because if you do listen to the end of Bridgewater, it will kind of spoil the twist in Consumed.

The Penumbra Podcast — (5 seasons, 2 storylines, both ending this summer) still barreling toward the finish line for both Second Citadel and Juno Steel. as a patron, i was notified of early release for the SC finale this morning, which i know is gonna wreck me. just wanted to feature this because i don’t see it recced as often anymore and that’s a fucking crime. one of my top AD recs for sure.

Red Valley — (While You Were Hypersleeping 3) three ep miniseries featuring our main best boy, warren, who has been notably absent from most of this season! so nice to hear from him and to get a glimpse of what might be coming in the next part of the season.

Observable Radio — (11 eps, ongoing) my favorite recent sci-fi/horror anthology by far, tied up in a terrifically dreadful meta narrative. afaik this is a limited series but i’m really savoring each and every episode; the most recent, “Earworm”, was one of my favorites. very dark and dystopian. mind the content warnings!

The Network Defenders — (ep1) the debut of a new Planet Arcana miniseries, featuring some new voices and a fresh new tarot-based system (crowdfunding this year!) has all of the appeal of PA in terms of prod. quality, vibes and emotional depth, just new mechanics. 2nd ep is out now so i’m hopping right on that as i post this!

Waterlogged — (ep1) a new indie horror that i’ve been waiting to drop for a while now, and i really enjoyed the soft-spoken eerie vibe of the pilot. there’s a couple more things in the feed now so i’ll have to go catch up.

The Alternate Universes of Steel Ball Run (literally)

Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)

Ok firstly I just have to say I love love love the short glimpses of AUs that we see in SBR. I'm obsessed with the ever-so-slight changes, and then the bigger ones, because it really does just feed my curiosity into how the events of canon played out and how things could have turned out differently, if only something had been shifted ever so slightly to the left (and also my obsession with how SBR connects with the OG verse).

We know that in the 'base' universe, the objective of the race is the corpse of Jesus Christ, which has the power to grant stands. But during the battle with Diego, HP, alt!Diego and alt!HP, we learn that in another universe, the objective of the race is instead the collection of diamonds. Yet, HP still has Cream Starter, so stands obviously still exist. Okay, you might say, fine. But wasn't Cream Starter a stand HP was born with (ala Polnareff)? Yes, but as the panel above shows, and as we see during the confrontation in Philidelphia, in other universes Diego still has Scary Monsters and Johnny still has Tusk. What I'm saying is, it's entirely possible Stand Arrows exist in alternate universes of Steel Ball Run! (Or some other method of granting stands, at least).

Furthermore, if D4C transfers from Valentine to Valentine, and D4C was initially the ability of 'base' Valentine (as well as the Stand ability granted to him by the corpse), that implies alternate Valentines have a different stand entirely! (Unless Valentine somehow took off Johnny's leg without a stand, which I find somewhat doubtful.) I believe there is a line where alt!Diego mentions alt!Valentine’s range as if it were an important component of alt!Valentine’s stand, but we know that range is not necessarily the thing to watch out for with base!Valentine’s D4C. I’ll have to dig up the panel later but this is just a little note to come back to. Real quick, I just want to point this out:

Chapter 87: Ball Breaker (Part 5)

I think Johnny and Valentine parallel is so many interesting ways that I would love to explore later, but for now I just want to point out that both Tusk - Act 3 and Love Train enable their users to hide in a 'dimensional gap', only Act 3 protects Johnny through the ultimate defense while Love Train protects Valentine by hurting everyone else.

Back on track. The Spin, on the other hand, is a universal constant. Even if the corpse parts didn't exist, Johnny would have still followed Gyro after his initial reaction to the Steel Balls and learned Lesson 4 to advance Tusk to Act 2. Notably, in the universe seen above, Slow Dancer is perfectly fine. She was crucial in the 'base' universe to unlocking Tusk Act 4, hence why Valentine targeted her first. Though without Love Train (unlocked through the corpse), Act 4 isn't critical to Johnny's success. Take that as you will. At the very least, we can rest assured knowing the Johnny in the universe above wasn't on the cusp of walking again only to have Valentine chop his leg off.

What's more is that the corpse doesn't exist in any universe but the 'base' world (Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)). That only makes me curious as to what could have possibly brought Johnny to this point, given his legs and spine would have never had the chance to actually heal through the power of the corpse. Maybe he just wanted to save Lucy...

On the other hand, imagine being the Johnny and Lucy in every other world only to have your archenemy gain a new stand, try to dip, spontaneously begin to spin, then die instantly. They're the real winners here.

Chapter 86: Ball Breaker (Part 4)

Also, since the infinite spin follows D4C and the Valentine it's attached too, is jumpsuit Valentine just fine now? Did he simply move to a new universe with no way back? Things we will never know the answer to.

Okay, to get this post back on track, let me list some common denominators:

a) A confrontation of some sort between Johnny, Lucy and Valentine

b) Johnny is always somewhat kneeling, implying that in every universe he is disabled

c) It's sunset

Differences:

a) In the latter two universes, it appears Johnny does not have Slow Dancer

b) Lucy has shoes in the last universe

c) Johnny does not have Tusk out in the last three universes (do stands exist in those ones?)

d) Johnny is only injured in the first alternative universe

My theory is that the further Valentine travels between universes, the more the differences pile up. Though, as Valentine states, certain things are constant. His father's death, for example, though that could be due to some constant stroke of fate to set Valentine on the path to being a powerful figure in every universe (though he might have been lying about truly wanting to find his father. Never meet your heroes, right?)

Chapter 88: Break My Heart, Break Your Heart (Part 1)

Perhaps Johnny's disability also falls in this category. Without these events, they probably would not have found themselves in these circumstances, and would have been different people entirely.

We know from the existence of The World!Diego that there are some universes where someone dies and another survives. Valentine knows that, as he tried to entice Johnny with the promise of an alternate Gyro who survived past his encounter with Valentine, or perhaps avoided the corpse hunt entirely. Personally, I would have loved to see a universe where Johnny died instead and we saw Gyro with Lucy. Just to spice things up a little.

Also, my crack theory is that The World!Diego, extrapolating from his crueler behavior as compared to Scary Monsters!Diego and the stand itself, was from a universe closely adjacent to the OG Jojoverse. Because I'm delusional, and I think the SBR characters somehow existing on the same plane as the OGverse is cool as fuck (and sets up lots of fic premises lol).

What's the bottom line of this post? Basically, for better or worse, every SBR au is valid and I would love to see some of these concepts explored. That's it, really.

Am I the only one who doesn't like character comparisons with the OG universe and the SBR verse?

Like, yeah, counterparts exist, but not every character has to be one. And I'm saying this because I've seen people saying Usagi is Doppio. But this is an old phenomena, I remember people used to think Mamezuku was Rohan.

I don't like these because it kind of "diminishes" the character, and ignores their own value. Like, this character is an asshole? He's CLEARLY Rohan.

It feels like these people are treating the OG verse as "more important". It's frankly, very annoying, adds nothing to character discussion and analysis, and spreads weird misinfo about the character, to the point the fandom portrays them completely differently to how they act in the manga.

I took a short break between comms to sprite my JoJo OC today, in honor of Jojolands finally getting a release date. Her name is Taeko Mochizuki!.

She’s a sukeban, but not really. People seem to think she is one and label her as such, but she’s not part of any gang.  She got the reputation because of how many fights she involves herself in- both mundane and stand related. She’s a bully hunter, defending the weak against actual delinquents or anyone else threatening her peaceful little town (Morioh, SBR-verse). Her stand is named Poseur, but she also wields an aluminum baseball bat.

Taeko is caring with a strong sense of justice, but she’s also a bit of a reckless airhead.
