in light of recent canon academic conversations, riz adaine gorgug study sessions have never been more real to me. gorgug helps riz + adaine get out of their own heads when they’re overworking themselves, riz + adaine help gorgug with alternative studying methods because he learns best through visuals + experience. fabian’s there occasionally when he has a particularly difficult assignment/test but he makes them all swear never to speak of it in order to protect his “image.” kristen has shown up exactly twice: once for advice on a group project that was two months overdue & once to just lay on the floor and relax for an hour before leaving. fig didn’t know the study sessions were happening until sophomore year & now keeps getting monthly bans because every time she shows up she ends up accidentally distracting riz + adaine. also, sometimes after/in the middle of really long study sessions riz adaine & gorgug go to basrar’s together to unwind but fabian kristen & fig Are Not Invited (they do still text to ask if anyone wants something brought back from basrar’s. they’re not heartless, after all).

As someone who wears the biggest chunkiest headphones, massive earrings, and occasionally safety glasses(for school and or hobby reasons) my heart goes out to Gorgug who, like me must acceident choke himself constantly. He absolutely flails like a sea turtle with a plastic bag around his neck when his goggle get stuck on his headphones.

Ragh's first guy kiss (I'm gonna assume it wasn't his first kiss in general but it'd be funny if it were) was the drummer of a famous rock band (and saved the world a few times but he moves in adventuring circles so maybe not as big of a deal) and I think that's cool. I think he should get to brag about it a little bit. I think he wouldn't. What a way to start the gay thing. What a fucking insane coming out story in general.

Yeah man my evil ex-vice principle turned out to be the emperor of the red waste Kalvaxus and he was gonna try world domination and kill a bunch of people and my ex best friend and also crush was involved in the whole conspiracy and I happened to confess that I was in love with him earlier that day and he punched me in the face and then said some more weird shit that's not important right now- no haha it's fine. He sucked I punched him in hell. Anyway this was at prom also. And then this adventuring party called the Bad Kids busted in to stop Kalvaxus and attacked my shitty ex friend and I was in my fucking feels so when they killed him I kind of freaked out and tried to fight them, and then their barbarian my friend Gorgug — yeah the one from Fig and the Cig Figs, we used to play Bloodrush together actually, but yeah he kissed me on the mouth. In front of the evil dragon yes. Yeah. Then I came out that was really encouraging to me it felt awesome. Then the dragon almost killed me I think he was homophobic. Yeah.

Anyone ever notice how similar Lydia Barkrock is to Gorgug? like just

Gorgug is a barbarian but is somehow the most gentle member of his party, the most thoughtful, easily the most in touch with his emotions. He only uses his rage to protect the people he cares about, his family is incredibly important to him, and his friends are family.

Lydia is another gentle giant. She is in a constant state of rage so she may protect her son (and the rest of the world). She is kind, she is nurturing she is a loving mother to Ragh and to everyone else who needs her. She also loved her party.

She and her friends set out to stop a fiend, to save the world. She’s clearly smart, even if she doesn’t have the classic knowledge that is associated with it she’s obviously intelligent. She didn’t need to know all the history, she had her friends for that. And then she was the last one standing, the only one alive, her friends were dead and she was holding the thing that killed them right next to her heart.

It makes me wonder if Gorgug could end up just the same. If the bad kids didn’t survive an adventure, he was left alone with his anger, his artificers instinct and a family to avenge. He uses his rage to protect people, he doesn’t like just lashing out, he makes machines so he can connect with loved ones, so he can understand the world. He’s so smart, but he doesn’t have to know all the history, he’s got Adaine and Riz for that, he doesn’t need to know about the way gods and the nine hells work, Kristen and Fig are right there. He doesn’t need to lead the Owlbears, Fabian his trusty captain will light the way.

What if they all were gone. And he was left,

a hole in his heart, an ache and a gentility not caused by an absence of anger, but by a deep deep understanding of it.

What does he do then? I think he does the only thing he can

after all

Belief is such a huge theme in fantasy high, not even just in the sense of Kristen's religious belief. Like yes there's that, there's Helio and Yes! and Cassandra and her doubt and her struggle to believe that something/someone is really there looking out for her, and there's the way she believes in her friends and herself in the meantime (healing Riz and trusting him/her friends to save her in Sylvaire, her philosophers teaching her critical thinking so she can trust her own judgement) but there's also like. Spring break I believe in you, and the way Bill's belief in Fabian's ability to write his name on the face of the world shaped him as a person. There's also Adaine saying to Aelwyn "I believe in you sometimes" after saying she doesn't believe in gods. There's Fig, and German shepherd mode, saying "I've got you. Believe in me. Trust me and I will look out for you" and struggling to sign an agreement with herself because she doesn't believe in herself, but believing that Gilear is something special. There's Riz, and his belief, his absolute conviction that his friends will always be there for him, like when he decides to save his dad in hell and the final thing he said when his decision was made was "my friends will find me". It's Gorgug, not knowing where his friends are in the forest but believing that they'll make it to him, leaving a message behind to help them get there.

God. this show makes me so emotional when i watch it like… how do these adults performing as kids in a dnd campaign say so many lines that just wrench my heart out?? “that is the love of my life” Kristen saving Riz instead of herself, “i trust fig will find me” riz’s conversations with his dad, “are you okay with us showing this picture of your dad all the time” “yeah! i love seeing my dad, hes been gone a long time” GOD, adaines conversations with her sister, any mention of the neglect adaine went through, “kristen sacrificed herself for me..”, Fabian finding his true self after being in a severe depression, but they also say so many just insanely funny lines too “did yall…fuuuuck?”, “FIG GOT HER KISSES IN?”, “Get the tinkerers to make the tinctures in the tinkerer tent?” “tremendous!”, “Im gonna punch my dad in the face”, “IM A LITTLE SHRIMP”, “GORGUGS DOING A CRAB STAND” honestly the entire shrimp party bit GOD i love them

Guys, if Gorgug keeps de-leveling in Barbarian and double leveling in Artificer, he's going to get Flash of Genius next level.

Starting at 7th level, you gain the ability to come up with solutions under pressure. When you or another creature you can see within 30 feet of you makes an ability check or a saving throw, you can use your reaction to add your Intelligence modifier to the roll.

The first time Gorgug uses this to save his friends, I'm legitimately going to cry. Gorgug using his intelligence to care for people is everything to me. Discovering the friendship section, and using the compass in his library card to find the exact right book to find the exact thing that would cheer Fabian up. Fixing the Hangman in secret with his brand new level of artificer. Figuring out Kalina was a disease because he wanted to check in on Ragh. Hooking up his phone to his parents' satellite to talk to Zelda. Secretly making a call to Aguefort out of concern for Ayda. Figuring out they were all being cursed by dragon madness and immediately donating all his gold to the Tinkerer's Hall, bankrolling their future innovations for years to come. Healing Baxter the griffin after he was so betrayed by his possessed master. Leaving "It's Gorgug, keep going," in a stone for his friends in the Forest in case they caught up to him.

What a masterclass of D&D combat from the players and the DM.

Brennan did such a good job of making the combat engaging and dynamic. He juggled so many plates and kept his cards close to his chest regarding aspects no one was aware of until near the end.

The Bad Kids maximized their effectiveness and importantly, they stayed on top of their HP better than they ever have before.

Adaine did some really great spellcasting plus the exploding mephits. Her Bigby’s Hand (or whatever it’s called) dealt solid damage and using it as a bonus action after casting is great. Really helped whittle down the purple worm’s massive HP.

Gorgug took all the punishment from a CR 15 purple worm and beat it after already fighting other monsters. Zac was in crit city this episode and he needed to me to beat that fucker.

Fig got to smite and used Booming Blade and spirit guardians to fuck up enemies basically doubling (sometimes more) her damage output every round (Really effective against the swarms.) and she 1v1ed a Wyvern, which is only a CR 6 but she also had other monsters after her because was disguised as Gaven. Really the mix of hexblade, paladin and bard stuff she did was cool. (Bonus action heals were good.)

Fabian as sort of a floating fighter, getting into the mix and fighting monsters wherever needed was so helpful and his flourishes and using his spell slots for his magical sword were great. He didn’t necessarily get the biggest moments this fight but he was integral and they’d have sorely missed him because he killed a lot of creatures. Not to mention the Hangman’s breath and bite attacks.

Riz doing peak rogue shit with haste and coming in clutch sniping monsters. Saving Gavin’s life, being able to ready an action to shoot from hiding and just all the sneak attack goodness. Plus Murph was so good about the test parts. He and Riz both seem to really thrive in stressful situations.

And Kristen who took her role as the primary healer so seriously it kept everyone up and banished a monster for good. Ally has been far more diligent about using Kristen’s abilities this season and it’s been such a big help. Plus truesight wrecked Killerpally’s plot to fuck them.

And they did all of this while answering timed test questions. This is the best they’ve ever played from a technical standpoint. Bill Seacaster would be proud they took his afterschool lessons to heart.
