Het i-woord

De Brits-Ghanese filosoof Kwame Anthony Appiah (1954) wordt in Sâo Paulo voor een Braziliaan aangezien, in Kaapstad voor kleurling, in Rome voor Ethiopiër en in Londen voor een Indiër. Van hem is het boek 'De leugens die ons binden – Een nieuwe kijk op identiteit'*, over dat wat oververmoeide i-woord. Binnenkort wordt het eerste kleinkind van mijn jongste broer geboren, een kind met Nederlandse, Javaanse, Belgische, Chinese, Poolse en Duitse genen. En in Frankrijk vragen ze in Aziatische restaurants vaak aarzelend waar ik vandaan kom. 'Hybride' kan verrijking betekenen of vertroebeling. Ik kies nadrukkelijk voor het eerste.

In de televisieserie 'De Afro-Europeaan' gaat de 45-jarige Ikenna Azuike op zoek naar Afrikaanse diaspora-gemeenschappen in Europa. Als kind van een Britse moeder en een Ghanese vader bekijkt hij hoe die gemeenschappen eruit zien, maar is hij ook op zoek naar zijn eigen Afrikaanse identiteit. Hij voelt dat hij daarin tekort schiet en eigenlijk geen idee heeft wat dat inhoudt. Ik ergerde me gaandeweg een beetje aan zijn klaagzang maar niet te weten hoe een zwarte man te zijn.

Na afloop van onze voorstelling 'Elkaars Andere – pleidooi voor naïeve nieuwsgierigheid' kwam een Indische vrouw van begin zeventig naar mij toe en bekende nog steeds niet te weten waar zij eigenlijk bij hoort. 'Omhels beide werelden', hield ik haar voor, 'zie dat als rijkdom.' Tijdens het lezen van Appia's boek bekroop me het ongemakkelijke gevoel dat het natuurlijk veel ingewikkelder ligt. Omhels ikzelf wel mijn beide werelden: de Nederlandse en de Indische? En waar komt mijn weerzin voor Tante Lien vandaan, het personage van de Indische tante gespeeld door Wieteke van Dort? Waarom vind ik het feit dat zij door de Indische gemeenschap op handen gedragen wordt zo onverdraaglijk? En is die Nederlands-Indische cultuur wel zo nostalgisch en verongelijkt als ik denk?

Appiah schrijft dat identiteiten benamingen en ideeën met zich mee brengen over waarom en aan wie ze moeten worden toegekend, dat ze je denken bepalen over hoe je je moet gedragen en beïnvloeden, over de manier waarop andere mensen jou bejegenen. Maar al deze dimensies van identiteit zijn betwistbaar en moeten dat ook zijn! De veronderstelling dat elke identiteit in de kern een diepe overeenkomst vertoont die mensen met die identiteit verbindt is onjuist, legt hij uit in zijn boek.

In dat hele identiteitsgeraas staat één ding voor mij als een paal boven water. Mijn geboorteakte bleek op een dag onvindbaar, ook in de huidige gemeentearchieven te Bandung. Die was noodzakelijk voor mijn huwelijk met G. Uiteindelijk heb ik in het kantongerecht onder ede moeten verklaren dat ik ben wie ik ben:

Christine Wilhelmina Margaretha Kemper, geboren 10 augustus 1951 te Bandung, dochter van Emile Kemper en Souw Han Nio.

Dwars door al mijn toebedeelde en toegeëigende identiteiten heen, ben ik ondeelbaar mijzelf. Dat heb ik gezworen.

Displaying a prominent sticker to celebrate the (controversial) 500th anniversary of the "discovery" of Brasil by Portuguese explorers on April 22, 1500, one of the remaining Boeing 737 of VASP (an acronym for Viação Aérea São Paulo) takes-off for a domestic flight.

The once proud second largest carrier of Brasil, founded in 1933 and backed by the local government of the State of São Paulo, had already come under financial pressure in the mid 1990s, following a costly expansion of its international network in direct competition to Varig, as well as due to the entry into the market of successful new competitors such as TAM Brasil.

VASP attempted to grow beyond its home market with the acquisition of a 50%-stake in LAB Lloyd Aereo Boliviano in 1995 which it sold again to investors in Bolivia six years later. At this time, VASP tried to return to profitability by means of a reorganisation (a.k.a. shrinking), however its financial crisis worsened even more through the year 2004. In January 2005, the civil aviation authorities revoked its scheduled operators certificate, only allowing the carrier to operate charter services until April of the same year. Although a reorganisation plan was developed and approved during 2006, the airline failed to resume flying and finally filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

Taylor’s Eras Tour Captions: “soon”

This is me clowning so don’t take this completely serious lol. Throughout the Eras Tour so far, Taylor has posted on social media about the shows she’s done. I remember seeing people using Taylor emphasizing the number 3 in her captions to predict the Speak Now TV announcement/release. One of the 3’s used was a set of 3 emojis which kinda was kept in the back my mind...

Today for Taylor’s Denver post, she used the 🔜 emoji which I remembered she used before so I took a look at her previous captions. She originally used it to share pictures from Glendale N1 and talk about doing it again (“do the whole thing again”) 👀

So my theory is what if she is more or less going to repeat these “see you soon” sentences to the next city. And when it is “Hey *** you’re NEXT 💜” then we can expect the next re-recording album announcement. If so, there are 6 captions between Glendale N1 and Atlanta’s. The next shows are going to be (in order and this year) Seattle, Santa Clara, LA, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Sâo Paulo.

Assuming she reuses the “play again tonight” caption for LA after that day break, we would land at something like “Hey Sâo Paulo, you’re NEXT 🩵” and an announcement in Brazil. Which kinda lines up with the break for the winter before the 2024 leg.

I mentioned earlier how people brought up the 3’s Taylor kept using. People are also now seeing a pattern with 5’s like Taylor saying “sooooo” and “Ahhhhh”. Could this mean that the next re-recording is 1989? Keep in mind that Taylor also goes to the 5th floor after the 3rd floor in the Bejeweled MV. Oh shit, if I remember correctly the last time Taylor performed at Dick Clark’s Rockin New Year’s Eve was in 2014 (bringing in 2015) with Welcome To New York and Shake It Off. What if we get to bring in the new year with those songs, Taylor Versions?

Now Taylor does not owe us another re-recording so soon and especially being so busy with tour. I am super grateful for Speak Now TV. This is more of a fun guess when I realized when I saw the Denver post. I also do realize there are theories that say Taylor is going continue with the double numbers and maybe something on 8/8 during the LA shows.

O condomínio Praça dos Franceses, na Bela Vista, fica no alto do morro e dava pra ver do meu antigo apartamento. Durante 13 anos eu olhava para aqueles prédios ao longe e exclamava: eles são felizes!

Quando nós saímos do apartamento, QUASE que fomos morar lá, não fosse por um acontecimento absurdo: quem mostrou o apartamento para nós foi um corretor de imóveis... embriagado! O pior é que eu não percebi em nenhum momento a embriaguez, nem tampouco cheiro de álcool, mas o resto da minha família sim, e estava enojado, revoltado, sei lá. Enfim, eles continuam felizes.

Essa de cairmos com um corretor de imóveis alcoolizado foi mais absurda do que a outra disgrama que nos acometeu naquela época, a de comprarmos móveis de uma loja que faliu e sumiu com o dinheiro dos clientes.

Police officer and congresswoman Katia Sastre, who rose to fame in 2018 after shooting a robber dead, embodies the growing presence of uniformed men and women in politics. More than 1,800 of them are running in the next election

Despite being off duty, former police officer Katia Sastre took a last-minute decision to put a gun in her purse before taking one of her daughters to a school party in the city of Suzano in Sâo Paulo. As Sastre and her daughter joined the crowd of mothers and girls at the school gates, a man carrying a .38 revolver materialized out of the blue. Without missing a beat, Sastre reached into her purse, pulled out her pistol and fired three shots, killing the aggressor. The images from a security camera went viral as Brazil prepared for the 2018 elections. And Sastre’s new-found fame catapulted her to Congress as she became swept up in the wave of Bolsonarism. Now, Sastre is campaigning to be re-elected in the elections on October 2 when Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and current president, Jair Bolsonaro, will compete for the presidency.

Along with a raft of generals-turned-ministers, Bolsonaro’s Brazil has seen a proliferation of congressmen and women who once wore badges and wielded guns. Sastre, 46, is just one of many drawn from the military and security forces. The phenomenon pre-dates Bolsonaro, but with his army credentials, the ultra-right-winger has fueled the trend. Besides Sastre, 115 uniformed officers were elected in the last elections, two of whom were voted in as state governors.

“My agenda over the past four years has been public safety,” Sastre tells EL PAÍS. “I have invested [public money] in programs to get children off the street so they don’t get involved in drugs, programs to strengthen families, and to combat domestic violence, not only against women, but also children... And to improve how we are armed, because right now organized crime has better weapons than public institutions,” she explains.

Make no mistake, Sastre is absolutely on the same page as the leader of Brazil’s extreme right: “I am totally right-wing and conservative, and I support President Bolsonaro,” she states categorically.
