Film: DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD (d. Radu Jude, 2023, Romania, Luxembourg, France, Croatia)
Forum: Chicago Int'l Film Festival (Film Center)   Format: DCP
Observations: This is slightly disappointing only by the Alpine-high standards set by Jude's other films. It follows a production assistant during a very long day of interviewing movie subjects (for an industrial film about worker safety) and many detours along the way. It is intercut with a 1970s, Communist-era film about a woman taxi-driver, and otherwise packed with incident: a dreary Zoom call with Austria (above); many TikToks (by the main character's on-line alter-ego, a profanity-spewing fan of Andrew Tate); a nap in the car; a quick sexual enounter; a convenience store trip; etc. etc. As funny and shocking as the film can be at times, one felt the 163-minute running time more than expected by the end. At times, it felt like Jude re-visiting his own greatest-hits. Sell-out crowd for this one.

One Movie From Every Country pt. 4
Yesterday, along with Oppenheimer (good movie btw, I recommend it), I watched a Romanian documentary-play called Uppercase Print by Radu Jude.
Tumblr media
Uppercase Print, an adaption of a Romanian play of the same name, is a unique film to describe. It's essentially two stories: The first being the story of an 18 year old Romanian child who graffitied buildings during communist rule, demanding change and the subsequent government investigation into his actions. The second being a portrait of Romanian state sponsored television, juxtaposing the Romanian government's cruel actions toward a child and the proud, authoritarian propaganda being peddled on the television.
This film is really different to say the least and I found it a little difficult to pay attention due to the way information was being relayed. Seeing Romanian programming from the 80s was interesting, but there were somewhere around 4 dozen segments, some of which just didn't catch my attention. Not to mention the sections with actors were performed deadpan with no emotion.
That being said, there was a point to all of it. It was to show you the cruelty and wickedness of the government's retaliation against this child (who died mysteriously four years after his protest), and juxtaposing their actions with their television programming, showing us happy folk songs, dancing children and military marches. These actions, performed in 1981, would be just an example of the sentiments of the Romanian public starting to bubble up, which would culminate in the Romanian Revolution of 1989, ending communist rule in the country.
An interesting history lesson for someone who didn't really know much about Romania, I think Uppercase Print is a good movie, even if it's a bit of a slog.
7/10

Film: JOYLAND (d. Saim Sadiq, 2022, Pakistan) and R.M.N. (d. Cristian Mungiu, 2022, Romania-France-Belgium-Sweden)
Forum: Gene Siskel Film Center   Format: DCP
Observations: Attended an unexpected double bill at the Film Center. When I arrived at the box office, I learned that they bumped the 6PM screening of R.M.N.; I expressed consternation, started heading out, got midway down the stairs, then rounded back to watch the 6PM show of JOYLAND, which was not on my radar at all (and the nice folks comped me the ticket for my trouble). About 16 people in the audience for that screening. Then I stuck around for the 830PM show of R.M.N., attended by maybe seven folks total. Both shows ran over two hours, which made (in the end) for a very late night. I expected R.M.N. to be grim (a movie exploring the labor-exploitive side of the EU and the ugly, sectional bigotry stirred up by globalism), but JOYLAND in the end proved equally difficult, if more personal in its appeal. Both films are recommended (by me).
