Huh. I read this in Romanian and with books here we don't have the dialogue in quotes. So for me what Watson says was written like
- These are the records of your early work, then? I asked. I have often wished that I had notes of those cases.
So I was today years old when I found out he actually says that out loud. The second sentence, I mean. I thought he just told us, the readers. And also Holmes doesn't really acknowledge the "I have often wished" thing, so. Yeah.
Huh
Tumblr media
hey, do you all remember when Sherlock Holmes was like “all the cases I took on before I met you, Watson, were premature” ??? “You should have been there, Watson” !!! “Before you came into my life I missed you so bad, WATSON” !!!!

Do you know. DO YOU KNOW. I read the Sherlock Holmes books in Romanian, right, cuz my mom got them for me and I wanna use them. So anyway I was very excited to finally reach The Dying Detective. Cause I'm on Tumblr a lot, I knew what happens. And I knew about "Quick, man, if you love me". So I'm approaching that part in the book. Omg yayy here we go. I turn the page.
"Quick, man, if you care about me!"
Ehem.
What.
My dude that does NOT convey the same thing and you KNOW it.
"Love" is a pretty easy word to translate, I mean you learn it pretty early on. Earlier than "coward" and certainly earlier than "spineless", which is what you are.
What, did you think it was weird? Were you so afraid that it would sound gay that you chose to translate incorrectly???
Literally the first fucking thing they teach you in a translation class is DON'T BE AFRAID TO TRANSLATE!! LIKE ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?? And it wasn't.. There were no rude words involved cuz that's usually what this is referring to but No it was just SOMEONE SAYING "IF YOU LOVE ME".TO HIS FRIEND OF MANY YEARS!
Look at me. Someone who doesn't know English reading your translation will never know that he said "if you love me". Does that seem fair? It was your job to convey the same message, but in another language. And you. Didn't.
"Dacă ții la mine"
Gabriel when I fucking catch you

Wool & lana
The word lana (wool) in languages such as Spanish is etymologically related to English wool. For words to be related, they don't have to look like each other. Instead, you have to be able to trace them back to the same ancestor through regular sound changes - and that's what linguists managed to do with wool and lana. The infographic shows the Germanic and Romance family trees of these words.

Sí, oui, òc!
Italian sì, Spanish sí, Portuguese sim and many more Romance words for 'yes' come from Latin sīc, which meant 'so; thus; like that'. In Popular Latin it got an extra meaning: 'yes', born out of the sense 'like that', i.e. 'like you said'.
French oui has a completely different origin. It comes from Old French oïl, a univerbation of o il, literally 'yes, it (is/does/has etc.)'.
O stemmed from Latin hoc (this), which became òc (yes) in Occitan, a group of languages whose name was derived from this very word.

Romanian here, and holy shit
the representation in Nosferatu was INCREDIBLE. I've never seen an American film in which the Romanian language and culture were shown so accurately, from the clothing to the phrases the characters used. Hearing "robul lui Dumnezeu" and many other familiar sayings in a huge production like this... Orlok being dressed like a boier... I loved it so much.
There were so many nods to the original novel and to the 1922 film and I genuinely felt like they worked together perfectly in creating a new story. So many cinematic shots and great acting and costumes and aaaahhh I am terribly picky with horror movies but this was GOOD!
