Caesar sat alone outside his nest, legs hanging over the edge of the porch wrapped around his home. The early morning sun filtered through the canopy of trees below, casting dappled shadows on the floor of the colony, a mosaic of light and dark as his people began to awake. It was in these quiet moments, away from the watchful eyes of his fellow apes, that Caesar allowed himself to ponder his life thus far. And despite his attempts to stray from the thoughts, more often than not lately, his mind was drawn towards the mystery of humanity.
Perhaps it was the absence of humans that had drawn this interest, or maybe it was a slow build of his pent-up, biological desires. Despite the scars of betrayal and the bitter memories of conflict, a stubborn fascination with humans lingered in Caesar's heart. It was a curiosity born not of naivety, but of a deep, unshakable connection to his past. Raised by a human father, Caesar had been nurtured with love and compassion, qualities he had come to cherish and emulate. It's what has contributed to his success as a leader and guide for ape kind.
Caesar knows who he is… he is an ape; he is not human. He is proud of where he is and how far he and his people have come. They’ve established their own community and developed a society. And he has the right to take full responsibility for all of it. Yet, there were still moments when Caesar found himself longing for the simple human experiences he once shared with his father. He missed the quiet evenings spent reading books together, the way his father’s voice would bring the stories to life. He missed the warmth of a home, the smell of fresh cooking, and the classical piano music that would echo through the halls during rainy days. These memories were bittersweet, a reminder of a time when the world, to him, seemed simpler, and the lines between ape and human were not so starkly drawn.
Despite these things he missed, he was still able to look back, smile, and move forward with his day, knowing that this was exactly where he was meant to be. There were other things though, about humanity, that had always drawn upon a certain kind of curiosity, even to this day. A curiosity and fascination that he was never quite able to quench even when he lived with his human family. He had been too young to fully grasp the concept at the time. He was just coming to the age where his body yearned for that understanding and developed interest when everything began to fall apart.
Humans had intriguing courting rituals. The displays of affection he saw between his father and mother were just commonplace when he was growing up with them. He assumed it was normal, but it most definitely was not. His years with his own kind have been enlightening for him. All those things he saw among humans, being through courting, affection, even mating… he assumed he would one day experience that as well, but these rituals were not normal amongst his kind.
He had held onto that desire to understand, know, and feel those same things he had witnessed among not just his parents, but the other humans he had seen on television, in books, and in the videos he had begun to stumble across in his curious search for answers. He’s come to realize that the only way to fully understand those feelings would be to experience it himself… but at this point it was simply out of the question. Humans have been gone for a long time, and he had his people to worry about, he couldn’t get distracted by some human-indoctrinated fantasy. He’s come to accept that.
During their first year in Muir Woods, he had done his fair share of “messing around” as humans would say, trying to find a proper mate to fulfill those human needs he was still clinging to, but there hadn’t been a single one that had been capable of satiating him. They didn’t make the noises like he was hoping, and out of all the ones he’d taken back to his nest, only Cornelia had agreed to lie on her back while he had his way with her, she did not question him like the others had with his odd request… The ordeal had been uncomfortable, and she had squirmed far too much for there to have been any enjoyment. And every time… It was short. By the time he was beginning to feel that urgency and burn in his gut, the females were no longer interested. There was no intimacy or “foreplay” as humans say.
None of it was human like he craved.
It took him some time, but he had to accept that the desires held in his heart were not meant to be fulfilled. It was an unnatural feeling he craved as an ape and he could not jeopardize the apes’ future for his silly human-influenced lust.
So, Caesar married Cornelia more out of the convenience of friendship than love. They were well acquainted with each other, and as the leader, he was expected to take on a mate to produce an heir. Cornelia was strong and kind, qualities that made her a fitting partner in the eyes of the colony. Her frequent respect and loyalty without question to Caesar opened a door for him that brought enough satiation to distract him from his human feelings. She was always willing to appeal to his odd human fantasies even without knowledge of where he got such wild ideas.
Their relationship had been one of mutual respect and understanding. Cornelia had always supported Caesar’s leadership, offering wise counsel and a steady presence. She understood the burdens he carried and stood by him through the many trials they faced. Though their bond was not one of passionate love, it was built on a foundation of trust and shared responsibility.
She bore him twin sons, Blue Eyes and Cornelius. The birth of his sons was a moment of joy, but it was also marked by profound sorrow, as Cornelia did not survive the ordeal. Twins amongst chimpanzees were extremely rare as well as extremely dangerous for the mother. It was a surprise marked with excitement and dread, both parents knowing the cost it may have.
Caesar mourned for her deeply, not just for the loss of a companion, but for the future they might have shared. Her death left a void in his heart, a reminder of the fragility of life and the sacrifices made in the name of survival. Now, with the weight of leadership pressing down on him, Caesar faced the expectation to find another mate. Yet, he had no desire to choose from among the apes in his colony. His heart was not ready to open again, and the memories of his human upbringing made the prospect even more complicated; those feelings and desires that have chased him his entire life resurfacing.
He twisted around to glance inside his hut to see both his sons still fast asleep. They were curled around each other, Cornelius’ head tucked up beneath Blue Eyes' chin. Caesar felt a pang of longing. He wanted to give them the same warmth and security he had known as a child. The legacy of his father, the human who had raised him, loomed large in his mind. A legacy of love and understanding, one that he hoped to pass on to Blue Eyes and Cornelius, even as he navigated the complexities of his own heart.
He doesn’t picture ever being able to bring another female into his life like he did their mother, there being no foundation of attraction or desire, nor a mutual respect like he and Cornelia did. Yet, he knew that for the sake of his sons and his people, he would need to find a way to reconcile his past with the future that lay ahead. Eventually, he will have to find another mate… a Queen like the colony deserves… and a mother like his sons deserve.
Caesar watched the sun continue to rise above the canopy of trees, lost in his never-ending thoughts. The gentle rustling of leaves and the distant calls of birds provided a soothing backdrop to his reflections.
Suddenly, a familiar presence approached from behind, taking a seat beside him. Rocket looks sideways at him with a kind smile, and Caesar returns it, lifting his arm to place it around his friend’s shoulders.
“Thinking about the past again?” Rocket signs.
Caesar nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he turned away to look over the trees once more. Rocket had a way of lightening the mood, even in the heaviest of moments.
“You know, it’s been a couple of winters since Cornelia…” He hesitated, then continued with a teasing grin. “Maybe it’s time you found someone new?”
Caesar’s smile faded slightly. He appreciated Rocket’s concern, but the idea of going through the process of finding another mate felt distant and unappealing. He signed back, his movements deliberate and calm.
“I’m not interested, Rocket.”
Rocket raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. He signed back with exaggerated gestures, trying to coax a different response.
“Come on, there are plenty of females in the colony. Strong, kind, beautiful…” He paused, then added with a gleam in his eye, “And they all admire you.”
Caesar shook his head, his expression serious. He appreciated Rocket’s efforts, but his heart wasn’t in it. He signed slowly, choosing his words carefully.
“I’m well over Cornelia. It’s not about her. I just… don’t feel that way about anyone here.”
Rocket’s playful demeanor shifted to one of concern. He signed back, his movements slower and more thoughtful.
“But why? What’s wrong?”
Caesar hesitated. He knew Rocket wouldn’t understand the full depth of his feelings, the complex mix of his human thoughts and desires, and the expectations of his role as leader. It is not something he thinks he can repress twice over. He signed back, his movements gentle but firm.
“It’s complicated. You wouldn’t understand.”
Rocket looked at him for a long moment, then nodded slowly. He didn’t push further, sensing that this was a boundary Caesar wasn’t ready to cross. Instead, he offered a supportive smile and signed back.
“Alright, my friend. Just know that we’re here for you, no matter what… If you ever have certain needs…. Without wanting a mate, we can work something out.”
Caesar nodded, grateful for Rocket’s understanding, and amused at the irony of his suggestion. As his friend turned to leave, Caesar grunted. His time of reflection has ended, and the quest to begin the day's chores is soon to begin.
Caesar walked into the colony, where the other apes were busy with their daily tasks. The air was filled with the sounds of chatter and activity, indicative of the thriving community they had built. Caesar felt proud as he observed their bustling life. As he navigated through the colony, he received respect and admiration from those he passed. The apes looked up to him not just as their leader, but as a symbol of hope and promise for their future. He paused by the central fire, where Maurice was tending to the flames.
“Caesar, you seem troubled this morning.”
Caesar sighed, sitting down beside Maurice. He had never spoken outright about his ‘problem’, but he had a strong suspicion that Maurice already had a general idea. He had seen the way Caesar had looked at human women, and he had been the one Caesar spoke to about his frustration with ape mating rituals. The orangutan was wise and perceptive, sometimes a bit more so than Caesar would like. But at a time like this, having a friend to speak with about his problem, however discreet it was the way they spoke, it brought on some relief. He signed slowly, his movements reflecting the weight of his thoughts.
“Rocket thinks I should find another mate. He doesn’t understand why I can’t.”
Maurice nodded, his eyes filled with an understanding deeper than another ape would reflect about this issue. He signed back, his gestures calm and reassuring, speaking prudently just as Caesar did.
“It’s not easy to move on from the past. But sometimes you must follow your heart, Caesar, despite how you may think it will look to others.”
Caesar felt a relief wash over him unlike any other he’d felt before. Hearing his dear friend’s indirect approval and understanding helped distinguish the guilt and disgust he’s felt towards himself since coming to the woods.
“Thank you, Maurice. I know I will never be able to act on my feelings, but hearing your words of acceptance brings me relief.”
Maurice smiled, placing a hand on Caesar’s shoulder. The fire crackled softly, casting a warm glow over them. At that moment, Caesar felt a sense of peace. He knew that the journey ahead would be challenging, but he was not alone. This was something he could get past. He has matured very much through the years, he is capable of putting his desires behind him for the sake of his sons and his people.
The tranquility of the moment was interrupted by the sudden arrival of Koba’s scouting party. The group of apes, led by Koba’s most trusted scouts, moved swiftly through the colony. Caesar and Maurice exchanged a glance before rising to meet them.
The lead scout, a burly ape named Grey, signed quickly, his movements sharp and precise.
“Caesar, we found something. A small human camp, not far from here.”
Caesar’s eyes narrowed, his mind racing. The presence of humans so close to their territory was a cause for concern. They hadn’t seen humans nearby for several winters now, and who knew what they were up to… He turned to Rocket, who had just joined them, his expression a mix of curiosity and apprehension.
“Rocket, find Koba. We need to check this out. Gather a small group. We leave immediately.”
Rocket nodded, his playful demeanor replaced by his serious resolve. He signed back.
“Understood. I’ll get the others.”
As Rocket moved to assemble the team, Caesar turned back to Grey.
“Tell me more about this camp. How many humans? What are they doing?”
Grey signed back, his gestures deliberate.
“There are only a few men, one woman. They seem to be setting up a temporary shelter. We didn’t get too close, but it looks like they might be staying for a while.”
Caesar nodded. The presence of humans so close to their territory could mean many things, and he needed to understand their intentions. He turned to Maurice, who had been listening quietly.
“Maurice, keep an eye on the colony while we’re gone. Make sure everyone stays alert.”
Maurice nodded, his expression serious.
“Be careful, Caesar.”
With a final nod, Caesar turned to join Rocket and the others.
Thank you all so much for reading! I have much planned for this story and I hope to keep this inspiration train rolling! You all would be much help to get it to continue, by showing your support. I absolutely love the imagines of Reader throwing a rock at Koba to save Ash! Have you ever thought about how they would approach the reader? If the reader was more wary or scared of the apes, considering the reader was definitely at the scene when the humans were being chased
I swear you all are going to convince me to write a full oneshot about this story!
The reader would be dead ass scared! And I think there are two possibilities that would lead to this:
After throwing rocks to Koba (and here you have more possibilities of how you feel, you can be shaking as a leaf or your survival instinct could kick in and pour you a huge amount of confidence to harass Koba with rocks, it really depends on who you are, some people act all frantic while others can be very calm in their head, so you chose!), here are the choices:
(1) You hide. You're too afraid to move from your hiding place which is probably under a pile of rubble or under a demolished car or something like that. And for sure you'll end up being stuck there and the only way to get out would be someone helping you from the outside. You're going to stay quiet and curled up until all the hustle and bustle around you dies down and you don't hear any more ape cries or crashing noises.
In the mean time (and after all the story we know with Koba being killed by Caesar), Ash would recall the event to his father (Blue Eyes confirming each words) still overwhelmed by your act of bravery and the fact he would not be here to tell this to Rocket if you didn't act upon it.
And Rocket will be desperate to find you to thank you for saving his son.
He'll end up finding you when it's all over, because you'll start calling for help to get a human to come and get you out from under the car. Except it won't be a human, it'll be Rocket who lifts the car with Ash's help.
And I'm willing to bet you'll mistake Rocket for Koba! You'll end up frozen in fear because he's bound to kill you by dropping the car on you, or he'll rip your throat out, or… anyway, you imagine every possible scenario until Ash tries to communicate with you using sign language to ask you to get out. That's when you recognize the ape you've been trying to save.
I think they would try too approach you in a very caring way like, trying to be gentle and slow in their movements so you don't feel threaten. If you got your knees close to your chest, I bet they would try to touch your leg with their knuckles softly to say something like "hey we're not going to hurt you please come" and they will give you space!
I mean, I believe apes are very observant and they know how to read facial expression, especially because we share more or less the same facial expression. Human are probably more expressive so it's even easier for them to read your emotions throw your face and Rocket would notice the fear! So definitely they give you space once you're out from under the car! Especially if you flinch when they try to touch your leg for example.
So yep, for this kind of direct encounter right after the aftermath, they would be gentle!
Or…
(2) You ran away. Which means you won't meet them right away, but much later. Maybe months after you've saved Ash!
You could be looking for food or water, and I can imagine you struggling to find any! And maybe you'll even try to steal a fish from Ash and Blue Eyes at the river, and that's how you'll find them again 🫣
They'll catch you trying to steal a fish and just as there's a moment of hesitation where you're staring at each other, not really knowing what to do, Blue Eyes starts growling and all of a sudden, watching you get scared, Ash remembers you!
He'll let you go with the fish, and that's the start of your adventure together!

An idea I really want to write about eventually is the concept of humans also being apes, technically speaking.
Obviously our bois would have some vague sense that we're similar creatures, but I can imagine them having so many reactions to learning just how deep those similarities go. Imagine learning the people you believed to be a completely different species, your enemy, are just a different version of you. Learning they had once even looked like you and behaved like you, but they went through such dramatic changes over millions of years that there's now a huge distance between them and yourself - but the ties are still there and can be found so easily if you know what to look for.
Especially if you were able to prove it. Maybe you find an old museum or a library full of human history, and they're able to see with their own eyes that it's true. You are an ape. Humans are apes.
Idk I have a lot of thoughts and feelings on this subject, especially regarding these characters and how this kind of thing would impact them and asdfghkljhfsff
Is this something other people would be interested in? Lmk if there's a character in particular you'd want to see a situation like this play out with and I might make a oneshot or two out of it 👀

[I look after you.] [POTA headcanons!]
Summary: Random acts of service I think each ape would do for you!
Characters: Caesar, Noa, Koba, Maurice Rocket, Blue eyes, Lake, Cornelius, and Dar.
Warnings: Caesar and Noa's are meant to be romantic. Dar and Cornelius are platonic as well. The others could be read as platonic or romantic, though!
A/N: These are all just random thoughts I've had today. Some will be shorter than others due to just how many characters I tried to include, so bare with me!
Caesar has a sixth sense as to when you're gonna get hurt, it's uncanny.
Humans are clumsy and more fragile than others, he knows as such because of his grandfather and Will, seeing them trip and fall over nothing, stub their toe and curse, it's almost as if they didn't have spatial awareness at times.
His reflexes are faster than his words.
So he knows when you're about to slam your forehead full force into a wooden beam, immediately throwing a hand up to soften the blow.
You instinctually let out an "Ow!" Before realizing you're okay, your mates warm hand against your skin. The Chimp raises an eye bridge up at you, looking towards you and then his hand.
"Oh."
Koba doesn't do anything nice for you without the expectation that you will do something for him in return.
One thing he will do is protect you against yourself, mainly out of pure pity.
Your center of gravity is different than his, and the woods are not meant for you, so get used to Koba yanking you back from a steep drop.
He isn't gentle about it, fist curled into your jacket and roughly dragging you backward, letting out a shrill against his knowledge.
You knock against his chest, his body immediately giving off its warmth to your own.
You're too scared to look up at Koba, knowing damn well he's gonna be glaring down at you, a comment ready to go.
Unfortunately for you, he does it regardless if you meet his gaze or not.
"Should have. Let you fall." He growls, hoping you can't somehow feet his heartbeat pumping out of his chest.
Noa enjoys caring for you, making your life easier by any means necessary, whether it be by learning how to make you tools that help you fish easier, cooking your meat for you, knowing that your anatomy is different, to teaching you to the best of his ability how to hunt more efficiently.
It's his love language, not that he'd be aware of it. It makes him feel like a good mate, and that boosts his ego.
He gets so mad if you try and wave him off, scoffing at the thought of you not needing him.
What do you mean you're fine on your own? Nuh uh.
Has pouted before and got huffy if you get off of your horse without him helping you down, turning his back to you childishly as he sighs as long as possible.
I hate him.
Maurice lets you cuddle into him for warmth. His fur is longer than the others, and he runs warm. He worries for you when the winters get rough. There's only so much they can do other than set a fire up and wrap you with animal hides.
Sometimes, it's not enough, and shivering yourself to sleep isn't fun.
Maurice considers you family, being the first first ape to truly take you in, he'd never turn you away from when you need him most.
Never needing permission, you quietly make your way to the Orangutan's nest, trying your best not to step on any leaves or branches.
Gingerly taking your time to settle next to Maurice, lowering your body down.
Taking a glance at Nova resting on his other side, you don't catch his eyes peering open, a hand coming up to sign slowly.
'Come.'
Lifting a long arm, he allows you to curl into his side, finally granting you a good night's rest.
Blue eyes always makes sure you're apart of the conversation, if he and Ash are goofing around, and you're standing off to the side, he's gonna immediately poke small fun at you to get your attention.
The second he has it, he's gesturing you over to their little circle at the camp fire, asking you what humans think of whatever subject they're talking about.
Baby Blue will shove his shoulder into Ash if he tries to make fun of you, knowing well that you may not take it as friendly banter just yet.
If you're gonna be with the colony, you'll need a protector, and who else is a better, more loyal one than Rocket.
No ape is being disrespectful towards you on his watch, you're important to Caesar and while that was in fact originally the reason he made it a point to keep an eye on you, he's come to love you himself.
An Ape comes up to you, asking something wildly inappropriate?
Rocket gets up in their face, making direct eye contact and puffing out his chest for them to back the fuck off, daring them to make a move, all while making sure you're well hidden behind himself.
Lake enjoys braiding your hair for you, the different texture offering a welcome challenge compared to her own.
She's so gentle and light handed, her fingers weaving the strands to the best of her ability, fingers much too large.
It's a bonding experience between the two of you, her downtime, after working with the little ones for hours previously.
The littlest ape prince is no stranger to clinging on to you at any point in time. Even as he grows older and gets to be too heavy to sit on your lap or climb up your back, he does it anyway. Wrapping his arms around your neck and hiding his face against your skin.
He does it when looking for comfort, but also for when he's being a little shit and his dad is searching for him to chastise.
Cornelius knows that when you're near, you're gonna spoil and baby him, and that's exactly what he wants, hiding behind you.
He is observant like his father, always in tune with your emotions and knows when you need to have company so you don't stew in your own head.
Drags you off to play with the other apes, not taking no for an answer even if you try to. He pulls those puppy dog eyes and it's damn near impossible to deny him.
Taking on a motherly role for you comes with ease, Dar slipping into it once Noa vouches for you.
She makes sure to take you under her wing, teaching you their ways of life in the a view point of an elder, not just Noas.
Please don't imagine that she'd make you your own shawl, matching her own, literally don't bc I teared up.
She'd be ecstatic to see you wear it around the colony, staring at you. She's so proud of you from how far you've come.
Dar will blatantly introduce you to others as her child, no matter what another ape says. Which wouldn't be much to begin with, became who is gonna argue with her? She won't hear a word of it, waving them off.

Oooh, this has given me an idea! Let’s set the scene! Rocket and Caesar take a trip to the forest with their newborn sons.
Caesar sat on a fallen log, cradling Blue Eyes gently in his arms, his expression a mix of awe and trepidation. Blue Eyes cooed softly, his tiny fingers grasping at Caesar’s fur.
Meanwhile, Rocket was in full swing—literally. He had Ash in his hands, tossing the giggling infant high into the air. Ash’s laughter echoed through the trees, a sound so pure and joyful that it was impossible not to smile. Rocket caught Ash effortlessly, only to toss him up again, higher this time.
“Rocket, are you sure that’s safe?” Caesar hoots to get the apes attention, tone tinged with concern.
He clutched Blue Eyes a little tighter, as if the mere sight of Rocket’s antics might somehow endanger his own son.
“Relax, Caesar!” Rocket laughed, catching Ash and spinning him around before tossing him up once more. “Ash loves it! Look at that smile!”
Caesar’s eyes widened as Ash soared through the air, his tiny arms flailing with delight. “But what if you drop him?” he asked, his hoots raise in octave, his worry bleeding through.
Rocket caught Ash and held him close, grinning and barking in amusement. “Drop him? Never! I’m a pro at this!” He gave Ash a playful nudge, and the baby responded with a squeal of delight.
Caesar shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips. “I suppose… but still, be careful.”

Sleepover Shenanigans
Summary: Blue Eyes and Ash know how to work the system… very well. Especially when it comes to their dads.
Word Count: 1.9k
Relationships: Blue Eyes & Ash; Caesar & Rocket
**Why this idea got itself stuck in my head I do not know, but I just couldn’t say “no”**
It was a typical evening in Caesar’s nest. The sun had begun to set, casting a nice warming glow over the treetops, visible out the large window beside the entrance to his home. Blue Eyes was out playing with Ash as he usually was most evenings, their laughter echoing through the colony as they laid chase to one another. Caesar and Cornelia were preparing for the night, ensuring everything was in order for the next day.
Today had been Fifth-day… and on Fifth-day everyone rested and enjoyed the fruits of their labor from past days. It was also the perfect time to sit down and plan, which is what Caesar had just got back from, a brief council meeting detailing what needed to be done tomorrow. Tomorrow was First-day, and as always, there were plans to send out a hunting and gathering party to stock up on food, but Caesar and his group were to finish marking the perimeter of their territory.
As he contemplates on the mental map in his head, he sees two young apes-- one being his son-- bounding up the long winding ramp to his home, a spark in their eyes he was all too familiar with.
“Caesar, can Blue Eyes sleep over tonight?” Ash asks, eyes wide with excitement.
Caesar looked at Cornelia. She smiled at him and lifted her arms in vague contemplation. “Tomorrow is First day. You have lessons with Maurice in the morning,” Caesar reminded both of them gently, bending at the knees to be closer to their level.
“But Father, please! We promise we’ll go to bed on time,” Blue Eyes pleads, shoulders sinking with the dramatics he plays out with his hands.
Cornelia huffs aloud with a knowing smile. “You need your rest, little ones. It’s important to be ready for your lessons.”
Ash and Blue Eyes exchanged a glance, then turned their attention back to Caesar. “We’ll do extra chores tomorrow!” Ash offered, reaching out to grasp at the fur on Caesar’s wrist as he bounced up and down to accompany his excited hoots.
“It’s not about chores. You need to be well-rested.” Caesar grunts, exhaling several puffs of air through his nose as he signs, crossing his arms when he finishes. He needs to stay firm… he can’t give in every time his son fights him on something.
Blue Eyes, sensing a crack in Caesar’s resolve, decided to push further. “We’ll even help Maurice with his lessons!”
Caesar’s stern expression softens slightly. “That’s very generous, but—”
“Please, Father!” Blue interrupts, vaulting forward to halt his fathers words by grasping his large hands in his own, his eyes wide and pleading. “Just this once?”
Caesar sighed, feeling his resolve weakening. He glanced at Cornelia, who gave him a knowing look. “Alright, let’s go ask Rocket,” he signs with a grunt, hoping Rocket would have the strength to say no.
The pair glanced at each other with mild worry before they scampered off to Rocket’s nest, where Rocket and Tinker were enjoying a quiet moment together, reclined by the small fire Rocket always had going outside their home. Rocket saw them coming and knew exactly what was about to happen.
“Rocket, can we have a sleepover here tonight?” Blue Eyes asked, jutting out his bottom lip, putting out all the stops to convince the chimp.
Rocket glanced over their heads, at Caesar, who was watching from a distance. Caesar was trying to subtly sign to Rocket, “NO.” Rocket huffed. He was always the bad guy! He hated being the bad guy, but Caesar… being as tough and firm as he was, was for some reason unable to tell children “no”.
Caesar was, however, good at the scolding part of parenting, which Rocket had yet to truly perfect. He left that one up to Caesar when it was appropriate. So in a way, they balanced eachother out when it came to parenting their children…
“Well, you see, you all have lessons tomorrow,” Rocket began, trying so hard not to say the word “no”.
“But we’ll go to bed on time, we promise!” Ash insisted, his eyes pleading.
Tinker, sensing Rocket’s hesitation, stepped in, placing a gentle hand on her mate’s shoulder. “It’s important to get a good night’s sleep, little ones. How about we plan a sleepover for Third-day instead when you don’t have lessons the next morning?”
The kids groaned in unison, their faces falling. “But that’s so far away,” Ash whined.
Rocket looked at their disappointed faces and felt his resolve weakening. He glanced back at Caesar, who was still watching the conversation intently, now with a look of mild panic. Rocket really didn't want to be the bad guy this time… so what would one night hurt?
“Alright,” Rocket relents, dropping his gaze so he can’t see Caesar’s maw fall open in shock, and the dismayed look on his face. “But you have to promise to go to bed on time and be ready for your lessons in the morning.”
The kids erupted in cheers, hugging Rocket and Tinker. Caesar walked over, shaking his head with a smile, mouth opening to release his muffled chuckle. “Becoming a softie, huh, Rocket?” he teased.
Rocket chuckled as well, happy his friend wasn’t too upset. “Well, I like to be the fun uncle too sometimes, y’know.”
Cornelia joined them, her expression a mix of amusement and exasperation. “Just make sure he actually gets some sleep, he’s very grumpy if he doesn’t,” she signs, giving Rocket a pointed look and a soft grunt.
“We will,” Tinker assured her.
Blue Eyes and Ash, having got what they wanted, raced off once more to continue their play. They still had until the sun set after all.
It wasn’t much longer before the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting an orange haze over the colony. Rocket hooted loudly, calling the kids back to his nest. Other fathers did the same, standing outside their nests to call their children home. It was the bedtime call, and every ape child knew exactly what that call meant.
The kids reluctantly made their way back along with a couple others they were playing with. When they reached Rocket, Ash clambered up his fathers large arm to cling to his back, and Blue eyes grasped at the limited fur on his wrists as he hooted gently in his excitement. “Do we have to go to bed now?” Blue eyes signs as Rocket leads them into the nest.
“Yeah, we’re not even tired,” Ash added as he leaped from his fathers back, rolling across the floor where he landed.
Rocket sighed, knowing where this was headed. “You promised you’d go to bed on time,” he reminded them.
“But Father,” Ash pleaded, “can’t we stay up just a little longer? We were having so much fun.”
Rocket rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. “No, it’s bedtime.”
The kids exchanged a glance, then turned their attention back to Rocket. “We’ll be really quiet,” Blue Eyes promised.
Rocket’s patience was wearing thin. A quiet bark accentuating the movement of his hands. “No, it’s time for bed. Now.”
Sensing Rocket’s frustration, Tinker stepped in, gently pushing him away to remove him from the situation. “Come on, little ones. Let’s get you settled in. I’ll tell you a story.”
The kids reluctantly agreed, following Tinker to their nest. She tucked them in with a couple of furs, her gentle touch and calming presence helping to ease their disappointment.
As the night wore on, Rocket and Tinker finally settled down with the two children between them, hoping for a peaceful night’s sleep. But it wasn’t long before Rocket was jolted awake by the sound of giggles. He opened his eyes to see Blue Eyes, and Ash hooting and laughing quietly at one another.
“What’s so funny?” Rocket grunts, getting the younger apes’ attention.
“Nothing, Rocket,” Blue Eyes signs, his lips pulled back in a quiet giggle. “We were just telling jokes.”
Rocket exhaled through his nose in a huff, rubbing his eyes. “Alright, but it’s really time to sleep now. You promised.”
The kids nodded, lying back down beneath the furs. Rocket lays back down as well, hoping they would settle this time.
A few minutes later, the giggles started again. Though, this time, on top of the giggling, the two ended up getting a little too excited, knocking into each other and pushing the other around, which in turn knocked Blue Eyes right on top of Rocket, sending him tumbling onto the older ape's other side.
Rocket sat up, feeling a mix of frustration and amusement. “Do I need to go get Caesar down here? Because I will.”
Blue Eyes, and Ash exchanged a glance, both silently agreeing that maybe it was in their best interest to quiet down and go to bed. This time Rocket stayed awake to ensure they fell asleep, passing the time by picking at his fur.
As the nest grew quiet, Rocket lay back down, hoping for a few hours of peace. But just as he was drifting off, he heard a quiet rustle and soft panting. He didn’t even think twice, rolling over to face the children, yanking Ash into the air, and depositing him on his other side, wrapping him tight in his arms so his body acted as a barrier between the two.
“Sleep,” he grunted aloud, huffing firmly. Ash could feel the harsh exhale against the back of his head, and he gave in, falling asleep in his father’s arms. Blue Eyes wasn’t too far behind.
**
The sun had just risen, casting a soft light over the forest. Caesar was already up, helping Maurice prepare for the day’s lessons before he was to head out. He glanced over at Rocket’s nest, curious to see how tired the kids would look stumbling out for their lessons.
Inside, Rocket gently nudged his son and Blue Eyes, who were still fast asleep, their faces buried in the soft leaves. Rocket grunts, tapping his son gently on the face.
Ash groaned, turning onto his other side to face away from his father. “No, Father” his sign was garbled and loose but Rocket got the idea.
Blue Eyes didn’t even stir, when Rocket poked him. He was out cold.
Rocket sighed, knowing this was going to be a long morning. Who knew when he and Caesar would actually be able to head out to the woods. He carefully picked up Ash in one arm and Blue Eyes in the other.
Caesar watched them approach, a knowing look on his face. “I knew it was a bad idea.”
Rocket solemnly nodded, his eyes heavy with fatigue. “Me too,” he replied with one hand after handing over the exhausted Blue Eyes. “They wouldn’t settle down. I tried everything.”
Caesar chuckled softly, though he couldn’t hide his sympathy for Rocket. “They have a way of wearing you down, don’t they?”
Rocket sighed, rubbing his eyes. “You have no idea. They were up half the night laughing. I even threatened to get you to make them go to sleep.”
Caesar raised an eyebrow, amused. “And did that work?”
Rocket shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. “Not really. I had to separate them in the end.”
Caesar looked at the sleeping kids, then back at Rocket. “Well, I appreciate you trying. Let’s get them ready for today. Maybe Maurice can use his magic to get them to wake up.”
**This is very thrown together, but the idea was just getting so overwhelming it was just seeping out of my brain… so I had to get it out lol. Thanks for reading!**

My Pota Headcanons in a Nutshell:
Caesar, Rocket, Luca, Maurice, Koba, Cornelia, Tinker, and all the other apes Caesar freed in Rise (to their children/all apes born in the Muir Woods): “You will not suffer like we have suffered.”
Then Dawn and War happens!
Blue Eyes, Ash, Lake, Red, Winter, Spear, Cornelius, Ray, Fox, Stripe and all the other apes born in the Muir Woods (all having lost friends and family to war, betrayed by friends and also became traitors, witnessed war, torture and murder, or have been killed and tortured themselves-possibly experienced hunger, cold weather, and other trauma before Dawn): “…We still suffered, just not like that.”
Where’s Bad Ape you may ask? He’s crying with all of them. Sad for all his friends and enemies. None of them deserved the shit they went through.

Human: Oh my god is everyone okay?? Oh good, good
Meanwhile
Caesar: ...we need to find someone for them
Rocket, nodding along: Someone good
Ceasar: Of course
Ash is gonna have to chase off suitors lmao- I mean who wouldn't wanna be with the person who saved the royal family, with nothing more than rocks?? That's basically celebrity status
"Ash. Ash. The other apes keep giving me animal carcasses. Ash why are they doing that, I really don't need this many carcasses, it's rather upsetting, seeing all their dead fuzzy little faces... Why can't they just give me a life dog or something, dogs are nice..."
Unfortunately for everyone else, at this point only Ash and Blue Eyes would know how to actually woo them
Sorry for answering SO late 😭 I wasn't in a good place mentally to think about writing and ideas.
Caesar and Rocket would most certainly ask for Maurice advise too on the matter! But then... Cornelia and Rocket's mate would intervene like "hey... You're blind, y/n has already chosen..." even if you're not well aware of it, the mommas know! 😂
