The Hide Your Heart Dilemma Pt. 1 of 3
With this one, I don't know where to start or stop, except that I have to get my foot in the door somewhere eventually. So why not kick the door down for simplicity's sake?
And just to make it clear once and for all, Ron Nevison is solely and exclusively to blame for this debacle, because if he hadn't categorically rejected Hide Your Heart in his somewhat overrated role as a producer for Crazy Nights (1987), for whatever inscrutable reason, then Paul would probably never have started to peddle this title, presumably to shake out whatever there was to shake out of it.
And Paul must have been hard at work and full of good things, because the list of interested parties is by no means short. For the sake of form, I'll try to put them in brief and hopefully in the correct order: Bonnie Tyler, Robin Beck, Molly Hatchett, good old Ace Frehley and last but not least Kiss themselves recorded Hide Your Heart alone between 1988 and 1989. Just imagine if they had all released it as a single, because that's what I initially assumed before I did a little research into the situation.
But, let's give it to ourselves anyway, the full Hide Your Heart hammering. You never wanted it, you'll get it anyway:
Bonnie Tyler (1988) was lucky enough to be the first, which more or less degrades all subsequent performers to cover versions in purely technical terms. She herself can best be described as professionally passionate, the music as slightly rocked, but rarely daring to play a chord straight through. An impression that is only reinforced by the keyboards/organ. The climactic chorus, on the other hand, could, as far as I'm concerned, drone on quite pleasantly until the end of time. Bonnie Tyler's rough voice, which by the way fits the song quite well, makes me wonder if this wouldn't have been an appropriate song for Peter Criss, and why the hell he didn't cover it back then as well? I'm rather surprised that he didn't.
The solo: Sounds kind of like Vinnie Vincent on Valium, and yet still a bit like the sonic equivalent of a runaway, bucking horse. Just not quite as wild, of course.

Release: July 1, 1988
Lyrics:
First time, first love
Oh what feeling is this
Electricity flows
With the very first kiss
Like a break in the clouds
And the first ray of sun
I can feel it inside
Something new has begun
And it's taking control
Of my body and mind
It began when I heard I love you
For the very first time
For the very first time
This life, this love
All the sweetness I feel
So mysterious yet
So incredibly real
It's an uncharted sea
It's an unopened door
But you gotta reach out
And you gotta explore
Even though you're not sure
Till the moment arrives
There he is and you know you're in love
For the very first time
For the very first time
And baby when I met you
Every feeling I had was new
I don't think there are words
To describe the sensation
It's an uncharted sea
It's an unopened door
But you gotta reach out
And you gotta explore
And when something happens
That words can't define
Only then do you know you're in love
For the very first time
For the very first time
For the very first time

Trans Bruce Wayne? Male to female? Like she loves wearing Martha Wayne's dresses.
Anon you're speaking my language???
Bryce grew up watching her Mama get all dolled up for galas and always connected with that in a way that people say boys shouldn't. Listen Thomas and Martha were definitely the type of parents that didn't care abt gender norms and would let their kid dress however they want. Thomas probably rocked a few dresses in his time.
So Bryce tells them that she feels more like a girl than a boy? They're so accommodating. They get her whatever she needs. The surgery, the drugs, the clothes (but she prefers to wear Martha's too big dresses). Alfred switches from Young Master to Young Madam. It would hit even harder when Thomas and Martha die because those were two of the three people who truly understood her. And now they're gone.
After they die, people feel a bit more comfortable bringing up her 'changes' to her face. Alfred is right by her side but she did have some uncomfortable moments with people. Thomas and Martha definitely protected her from a lot of the media attention and stares.
She still becomes The Bat. I can see her going by Batman to protect her identity even more but also sticking with gender neutral The Bat. People can't tell if The Bat is man or woman which elevates the cryptid vibe she's going for.
The day Martha's dresses fit her perfectly is a bittersweet day. All Bryce has ever wanted is to wear her Mama's dresses properly and now that she can, her Mama isn't there anymore. She sobs into Alfred's arms that day but after that, wears Martha's dresses with pride.
By the time she adopts Dick, she passes so well that he doesn't know she's trans. And it just kind of never comes up? He calls her Mama (which she cries at) or B and that's what all the other kids end up doing. There's some LoA magic/tech involved in Talia giving birth to Damian. He shows up at the manor and upon finding out that Batman is actually a woman, he's impressed.
They find out when the batfam decide to dye their suits for Gotham's Pride Parade and Bryce's suit is the trans flag and her cape is the demiromantic flag. There was a lot of screaming that day.
Jason tries but he just can't fight his Mama, no matter how angry he is at her for not killing the Joker. He spends some time away from the manor but after a lot of talks, screaming, tears and hugs, he comes around. He is also very protective over his Mama, I won't accept otherwise (they all are tbh)
Also let her be tiny?? 5'2, buff Bryce Wayne picking her 6ft+ sons up easily. A tabloid got a picture of Bryce holding Dick up after an attack at the museum by The Riddler. She's in a pretty floral dress, with pink pumps and soot all over her face and her muscled arms covered in blood and scratches. The internet went insane.
Bryce Wayne: *exists*
Gothamites: mommy- sorry mommy- i mean mommy-
Also rip the batkids cause Bryce mothers all their friends too. Shit hits the fan when Jason nearly strangles Garfield cause Bryce gave him a forehead kiss to check if he had a fever.

The Hide Your Heart Dilemma Pt. 3 of 3
Kiss (1989) Paul brings the vulnerability into the overall picture of this rather manageable little drama, as the only one, by the way, I would like to point out. After all, he should know best what he is singing. And this feeling in the verse part can also be recognized as an amazingly well elaborated new facet of his vocal sound spectrum, even in pure form and completely without schmaltz or any cheese. A tendency that deepens even further on Hot in the Shade with Forever, and is anchored in the quieter songs on the following two studio albums. The music itself offers perhaps the simplest and at the same time most balanced, and on this level most elaborated presentation of Hide Your Heart, even if bass and drums tend to block these approaches and stubbornly indulge in the more one-dimensional rock minimalisms.
The solo: A little dramatic stage play between Johnny and Rosa. Or Paul's and Bruce's guitars I suppose, with Paul in the role of the unyielding Johnny, who stubbornly believes he has to prove his toughness, and Bruce as the energetic and futilely pleading Rosa. Recommended by serious but friendly educators, which middle school teachers then have their class analyze as lesson material.

Robin Beck (1989) Strangely enough, her version was neither used for a soft drink nor a burger advertisement. But anyway, it's basically Bonnie Tyler, only a bit rockier and louder, and a bit more insistent with a bit more dedication, especially in the bridges (Johnny Better Run, Better Run!!!). Every now and then she gets carried away, but that's okay. The chorus is the one you really want to shout along with her. The almost non-existent keyboards have an almost sacred quality in the right places, which also gives this power shouter a little more moral depth than the already disdainful street gangster drama. I bet that woman beats me at arm wrestling. Sympathetic.
The solo: Somehow all I keep hearing is jacking horses, but I think the rest of this solo sounds most like it would fit on a Kiss song, only with much less of what i'd like to call the identity density of a Bruce Kulick.

Paul Stanley (Demo 1987) As a little encore for all those who still haven't had their fill. Of course, this one' s a bit rougher and more unpolished, which is best illustrated by the dimension of the guitar and background vocal arrangements, but I think this is exactly how Kiss have been playing it live for the last few years since they added it back into their repertoire. The song works wonderfully that way, and that's how it sounds most like Kiss. Honestly, that's probably why it's my favorite version - except for the guitar solo.
The solo: Just fiddles around in 80s rock standards without much ingenuity, and in all likelihood was only intended as a placeholder in this form anyway.

And what' s the moral of the story?
There isn't really one. I can only think of this story about how Gene somehow managed to get Thief in the Night onto Crazy Nights (1987). Thief in the Night, or at least its vocals and lyrics, were composed by Gene in 1982, but ultimately ended up on Wendy O. Williams' W.O.W. solo album in 1984, which technically makes Thief in the Night a cover version as well. And it is said that Paul was not amused.
I mean, Paul clearly got Kiss into the bigger hullabaloo with Hide Your Heart. Or how should you look at it?
