We can kind of brute force some numbers on his age in Io years, if we assume Rimmer is the same (physical) age as Chris Barrie throughout the show, and gloss over the timeskips Rimmer ages through, just looking at the age he's supposed to look like.

So in February 1988 when Series I began airing, Barrie was 27 and turned 28 on the 20th of March, the day before the last episode of SI - Me² - aired on 21/03/88. Series II aired from September to October 1988. Because Rimmer clearly doesn't have a birthday between Confidence and Paranoia and Me², let's pencil in Rimmer's first post-Lister-waking-up-from-stasis birthday as happening between I and II, and not worry about it. Maybe they missed it because of double hologram shenanigans.

We know the Boyz celebrate Rimmer's death day (aka drive plate accident day) in the opening scenes of II:3 - Thanks For The Memory, and for a second I thought 'oh maybe holograms don't celebrate birthdays' but then I remembered 'no this is Rimmer' the idea of him passing up the opportunity for special treatment or gifts and stuff is a stretch.

So within say, seven months (March-Sept)? Gazpacho Soup reveal, Rimmer's first post-Lister-waking-up-from-stasis birthday, first meeting with Kryten, Better Than Life, Rimmer's first post-Lister-waking-up-from-stasis death day.

Okay, not going to find any exact dates obviously, but let's go with him physically equating to 28 just before Kryten.

Io orbits Jupiter every 42 Earth hours?

How many Earth hours are in 28 Earth years?

I *think* this would make a 28 Earth year old Rimmer 5,840 Io years old on his I-II birthday.

Obviously, the length of all these years would change as orbits shift over the 3 million (Earth?) year stasis timeskip, but let's fix them to where they are when Red Dwarf leaves the solar system.

Of the 67 known moons of Jupiter, we know Ganymede, Titan, Europa, and Io are inhabited in Red Dwarf, but the only implication we have that Jupiter itself is colonised is in Legion when Kryten mentions Jovian boogle hoops - a kind of local utensil.

If there are up to 67 Jovian moons, plus Jupiter proper, all inhabited, could they plausibly be grouped with a unified calendar? The JMC is known for big overarching bureaucratic stuff like Esperanto language. We mark years as an orbit round the sun, planetary orbit isn't really a unit we use, and Io would be following the length it takes for Jupiter to do a solar orbit.

Because guess what, a Jupiter year is 12 Earth years long, and a 28 Earth year old Rimmer would only be 2.3 Jupiter years old. Just the comedic potential of Rimmer telling Lister he's nearly two and a half is delightful.

I think it also meshes with Rimmer's general garbage childhood if he had exactly one (Jupiter year) birthday with his family/parents before he divorced them.

The most recent episode airdate was 09/04/20, at which time Barrie was 60 years (and a few weeks) old, the equivalent of only 5 Jupiter years old.

In your proposed Io years, 60 Earth years becomes

So to recap:

28 Earth years = 5,840 Io years = 2.3 Jupiter years

60 Earth years = 12,514.3 Io years = 5 Jupiter years

Here's a fun fact for you all to ponder on.

Rimmer was born on Io.

Io has a very short year in comparison to Earth's. In fact, it only takes Io 42 hours (Earth hours) to orbit Jupiter.

There's no way I could personally work out the maths on this, but in Ionian years Rimmer must be hundreds of years old (am I correct in thinking that?)

I'm guessing this may be the reason why we don't hear any references made to Rimmer's birthday ....

No months, no seasons, he was just born on the 40th hour of the year.

Or to be more precise for the birth certificate: he was born on the 40th hour/20th minute/32nd second or 40/20/32/YEAR

The TRON first script draft

Last year, the wonderful @greetingsprogram1982 managed to acquire a copy of the first script draft for the film TRON, scanned it, an uploaded the pages as jpgs here on Tumblr. I have now taken the liberty to convert these scanned pages into a pdf file and upload it to The Internet Archive, in order to hopefully preserve this important historical artifact a little better (many of you are probably aware that Tumblr isn't exactly the ideal place to archive things long-term for various reasons):

I can highly recommend that any fan of the original TRON movie check out this script draft, if you haven't already done so. It's a fascinating read, containing scenes and concepts that didn't make it into the final film (and missing some parts that would be added later), and versions of the movie characters who are very different from what they eventually ended up being.

Hey there lovelies! I've been sitting with my Dad in the hospital for a few days, and it's given me a lot to think about. Today especially was particularly hard, and I wanted to send out a couple reminders I think are important.

It's okay to be scared. Things don't always go as we plan, and scary things DO happen, and you are absolutely valid in feeling fear in the unknown.

It's okay to ask for help. Sometimes, even if you are the proudest person in the entire world, you need help, and it's okay to ask for that help. Even if you're estranged, or have difficult relationships, ask for help, the worst that can happen is someone says no. Better to know for sure then not ask.

You're absolutely wonderful lovelies. You. When you're scared, when you're happy, when you're sad, you're beautiful, and you're wonderful, and you deserve love and help just like anyone else. Please ask for it if you need it <3 Rest well, I'm rooting for you.

New Red Dwarf Challenge

Day 9: Favourite Set

The High version of Red Dwarf.

From the moment Lister and Cat step on board to be greeted with soothing music, sparkly clean white corridors and vending machines which serve edible pot noodles, the High version of Red Dwarf delights me.  Lister even says the air is better than on regular Red Dwarf although of course we have to take his word for that.

And that’s before we arrive in the High bunkroom, full of (amusingly phallic) crystals, gauzy white curtains and soft rugs.  It just looks like a relaxing place to hang out in, once you get used to High versions of yourselves “entertaining” you.

And then we have a certain promotional photograph.  In the episode itself the bunk isn’t focussed on at all.  Having checked that part of the ep, it’s odd how the camera almost seems to avoid it on purpose.  

But the set designers were given the go-ahead to make it look as though High Lister and High Rimmer are happily sharing the lower bunk and the fact that it’s literally the subject of a promo shot means someone gave the OK for that.

I don’t know, maybe the idea was that the Highs are just platonically sharing a bed because they’re Above All That and also - obviously - High Rimmer is soft-light.  Doesn’t stop it looking like a couple’s bedroom.  Awww.

Fic Interest Check!

so my friend Zhel, who's the reason this blog exists, is writing a rimster fic. It's, like, 30 chapters and really good, but they're scared to finish it. The premise as described by them is this:

"Inspired by Kaden MacKay’s song ‘Your Stupid Face’, this fic aims to show the evolution of the Rimster dynamic, stretching all the way from pre-canon right through to TPL, adding a new element or character development as the series progresses and is mainly told through Lister or Rimmer’s POV. Side note: books are treated as canon."

It's. Insanely good. Every chapter focuses on a different episode iirc. But they're terrified of finishing it because they've never finished a long fic before. And they don't wanna post it till it's done. So!

The more notes/votes this post gets the more I can prove to them they should finish it (there's literally nothing stopping them, this is just encouragement). So what do y'all think, should they finish it and show it off? Because I think yES!!!

Smegtober Day 6: Stranded

A/N: This is set during Marooned. It is a little bit of a rewrite.

Lister is going to die. He’s millions of years away from home, stranded on an icy wasteland of a planetoid, and he’s going to die. And to make matters worse, his last meal is going to be a pot noodle. He always swore hell that the day he willingly ate one would be the day hell froze over, but having stepped outside Starbug and experienced the blistering wind and frost outside, he wonders if maybe that day has come.

And anyway, a pot noodle can hardly be any worse than dog food.

Lister grimaces and runs his tongue across the roof of his mouth. He can almost feel the rancid texture of the jellied meat still stuck to his gums. He couldn’t even say it was worth it because now, as well as the gnawing ache of hunger, he feels his stomach occasionally curl with nausea.

He looks over at Rimmer. The hologram is sat at the console attempting to send out another distress call. He’s been sending them more and more frequently, Lister has noticed. He wonders if he should say something about it, but he doesn't. He hasn’t said much about anything for a while.

Rimmer hasn’t either, and he probably thinks that Lister hasn’t noticed. The same way he probably thinks Lister hasn't noticed the tightness around his eyes, the grim set of his mouth whenever he glances towards the fire flickering weakly in the middle of the floor.

The silence sits like a stone in Lister’s chest. Rimmer doesn’t think he’s going to make it. He doesn’t believe the others will get to them in time. He smiles grimly at the thought that maybe Rimmer does care about him after all, but he knows that’s not true. All Rimmer can think about is the fact that once Lister is dead he will be switched off. He speaks up.

“Any luck?”

Rimmer shakes his head, “No.” His voice is quiet and subdued, without any of the usual snark.

Lister tears another page from Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker and drops it into the barrel, watching the flame slowly lick at it.

“Fire’s starting to die.”

“Is it?” Rimmer responds absently, but Lister can see the slightest pinch in his eyebrows when he turns to check for himself. Rimmer eyes the dwindling stack of books, as if trying to gauge how long they might burn for.

“Yeah. Could have done with a few more books.”

“Well, pardon me for not having an entire library at my disposal.” Rimmer says crisply. “If I had known they’d be used for kindling I would have brought the entire works of Jim Patters on board. That would have kept the fire going for a few decades.”

Lister shifts in his chair. He can’t quite feel his fingers. “Maybe.”

Before Rimmer can reply with another quip or comment, Lister continues. “Rimmer, listen. If the others don't get here in time-

“They will,” Rimmer cuts him off. His voice is tight and leaves no room for argument, but when has that ever stopped Lister before?

Lister tries again, “yeah, right. But if they don't…” He falters, his tired brain struggling to find the right words. His stomach groans, Rimmer's lips thinning even further at the sound.

Lister swallows. “If they don’t-”

Fortunately, Lister doesn’t have to finish the thought, as he is interrupted by Kryten and the Cat bursting in.

Visibly relieved, Rimmer watches him as Kryten checks him over. He scans Lister's face, as if trying to guess what it is he was going to say.

Lister isn’t sure either.
