Someone once asked me how I use psychology in my witchcraft, and I never got around to answering it. So I figured I should do that.

The basic answer is that I ask myself, "does this take advantage of something we know about how the human mind works; or might it have psychologically unhealthy consequences?"

For example, I remember reading somewhere that washing up can make people feel as if they've been emotionally or spiritually cleansed. So if someone asks how they can move past a bad point in their life, I'm probably going to recommend some kind of bath or shower ritual.

I also know that our subconscious minds process information and often come to fairly reasonable conclusions without our even realizing it. So if someone's having difficulty making a choice even after doing the best possible research they can, or where there's just no objectively "best" choice, I might suggest using a pendulum to sort it out.

I know that the brain tends to internalize repeated information, so I'm down with healthy affirmations.

I know that people respond to symbols, both consciously and subconsciously. So if someone wanted to feel more confident, I see no reason why creating a spell jar full of things associated with confidence wouldn't provide some benefit if they kept it in a visible place.

I know that energy healing practices can at the very least help people relax. While I would never, ever suggest that someone pays huge amounts of money or uses energy healing in place of evidence-based medicine (never use anything to replace evidence-based medicine), I'm down for using the techniques on yourself or on your friends, or watching ASMR reiki videos on YouTube.

And on the other hand, I don't really put much stock in spells or practices that target an unaware third party. For example, I don't think death or misfortune curses are especially likely to work. I also think that in some cases, they might just reinforce a fixation on revenge that actually hinders the caster's path to emotional healing and finding healthy coping mechanisms.

So yeah, that about sums up how I view magic though a psychological paradigm - I ask myself how a technique might take advantage of something we know about the human mind, and whether it might have psychologically unhealthy consequences.

Some weeks are made for boss moves, others are made for naps and recharging with a clay mask. Recognize the difference and stop making guilt your co-pilot.

2. Micro-Rituals > Major Overhauls Burnout thrives on all-or-nothing energy. Instead of a total routine reset (that lasts 3 days), try micro-rituals: a 10-minute walk while voice-noting your feelings, stretching while your serum sinks in, doing absolutely nothing while your phone is on Do Not Disturb. You don’t need hours. You need intention.

3. The Energy Budget Rule You only have so many energetic dollars to spend each day. Choose wisely. A soul-sucking brunch with your fake friend group? Expensive. Reading a spicy novel in bed after Pilates? Rich in serotonin. Make deposits into your joy account before you overdraft.

4. Protect Your Peace Like It’s Your Birkin Seriously. Your nervous system wasn’t built for 27 open browser tabs and being the emotional support human for everyone around you. Start saying no like it’s a skincare step—necessary and preventative.

5. Rest Is the Reset Button, Not the Reward Hot girls don’t earn rest—they schedule it. It’s not a treat after you’ve crashed. It’s a built-in ritual to stay sane, snatched, and spiritually intact. Add “do nothing” to your calendar. Then actually do it.

6. You Don’t Have to Heal Everything This Week Repeat after me: not every issue needs to be solved in one sitting with four podcasts, a journal session, and a reiki YouTube video. Sometimes you just need a nap, a good cry, and a smoothie. Healing can be cute, chill, and slow.

Just as some Christian paradigms believe that sin pollutes the body, causing everything from leprosy to madness, so did childhood trauma beleaguer my bodily systems like a poison. I needed to detox. Friends who had healed relatively minor health issues advised me to try a celery juice cleanse, try veganism again, try to meditate more, to pray more, to dance more, to focus on the positive more. I really needed to focus on lifting my vibration. […] We treat illness and trauma like an individual failing that can be solved by cleaning up our behavior, our diets, our spiritual hygiene. But most of us are not polluted with personal shortcoming but rather are caught within webs of systemic oppression and inequities that well preceded our births. Yet once we are sick or traumatized, it becomes our sole responsibility--financially, practically, and emotionally--to solve how our bodies have "kept" the score of a game we never even knew we were playing. This idea of individual responsibility for the after effects of systemic dysfunction is called "healthism" and is rampant in everything from new age rhetoric to more standard medical paradigms. Physical and psychological health as atomized within Western ideas of individuality become possessions. They are objects to be owned, hoarded, stolen, defended. If you lose them, then it must be your fault. If they become tainted by violence or illness, you must strive to purify them. You can buy back health and purity, though. Just one more supplement. One more somatic experiencing session. One more colon cleanse. One more reiki appointment. One more meeting with an immunologist who is the only person recommended to treat your condition but doesn't take insurance and orders hundreds of dollars of blood tests.
