Feeling ko, ang productive ng weekend ko. Kahapon (Sabado), natulog lang ako buong araw. Productive nga. De wait, nag inum kasi ako nung Thursday tapos madaling araw na ako ng Friday umuwi. Yeah, ang lala ko talagang nilalang. Maya na mga side comment, pero ayon nga.

Friday na ako nakauwi, tapos 6am pasok ko kaya halos wala din akong tulog. Ang dami ko pang inatupag sa work ko nung Friday, kaya kahit nakawork from home kami, hindi ako nakatulog. Nung lunch lang ata. After work naman, diretso tulog. 3PM nag out na ako, mga quarter to 7PM nagising ako. Nascam naman ako ng family ko na mag pa deliver kasi sweldo ko daw. De joke, tuwing pay day talaga ganito ang ritual sa bahay. Libre sa fam, nalate lang ngayon kasi usually, meryenda nililibre ko kaso nga sabog ako. Naging dinner. Alam din naman nila.

Pagkaratong ng Sabado, parang pagod na pagod pa din ako. Pagkagising ko, nag hugas lang ako ng pinggan. Yes, eto ang trabaho ko sa bahay. Taga hugas, tuwing weekend lang naman. After ko mag hugas, nanunuod ako tapos nakatulugan ko. Pagkagising ko lunch na. Pagkakain, nakatulog ulit. Ang saya eh. Nung hapon naman, umalis ako. Para mag withdraw at mag bayad ng payable. Onting shopping din ng mga walang Kwentang bagay, hello Watson at NBS. Ayon, ubos na pera. Hehehe

Ngayon naman, (Sunday) nag aya ako mag jogging. Pero nag dala ako ng bike. Hahaha ang layo kasi ng bahay namin sa labasan ng subdivision tapos takot talaga ako mag lakad palabas tuwing madaling araw kasi ng naholdap na ko, kaya nag bike ako. Pero ipapark ko naman yon kapag nasa place na kami na pag tatakbuhan.

Naimbarbie pa nga si Jeremy kasi bat daw ako nag dala ng bike. Muntik ko patulan. HAHAHA si Marvin kasi keri lang, habang nag bibike ako, nasasabayan ko yung pag lalakad niya. Nag kwekwentuhan pa nga kami ng kaululan. Tas yung isa, nag phone sabay nanuod sa Netflix. After namin mag jogging, nag aya ako mag mang inasal. HAHAHA kung may bukas lang, alam ko pa patol yung mga yon sa aya ko eh.

Nag lugaw na lang kami dahil wala pang bukas na MANG inasal. Pagkatapos mag lugaw, uwi.

Pag dating ko, nag hugas na ulit ako pinggan. Nung natapos na ako sa mga gawain ko, phone lang habang sa makatulog.

Pag gising ko, may nag chat na gusto daw makipagkita sa akin. Kaso, tokis. Alam mo ba, ito pa rin yung pinakakinaiinisan ko na ginagawa sa akin. Kapag nag aya sabay cancel tapos nakaligo na ako. Hindi pa naman ako maliguin na tao. HAHAHA kaya ayon, hindi na to makakaulit.

Tapos, isa pa tong si Kenneth. Ewan ko, ang ulul lang talaga na sa akin isisi lahat ng katangahan niya. Inutusan ba kita na gumawa ng mga katangahan mo. Nasasaktan din ako sa effect ng katangahan mo tas sasabihin ko na kasalanan ko. Kung ako yung nag mando sa buhay mo at pumilit sayo sa mga choices mo, hindi ganyan yung kakalabasan niyan. Kasi si siguraduhin kong hindi ako malulugi eh ngayon, ako pinaka talo. Kaya, suntukan na lang ano? Own your mistake.

Ekis talaga sa mga tao na hindi kaya panindigan mga desisyon sa buhay. Kung patanga tanga ka, kanyahin mo yung katangahan mo. Kung ayaw mo naman na ganyan ka, galingan mo pag desisyon mo. Hindi yung ang ulul mo, sinisi mo na lahat pwera sa sarili mo. Awit ka talaga.

End of February na.

Hinayaan kong gawin lahat ng gusto ko this month. Binitawan ko lahat ng feeling ko dapat kong ika stress. Nag patattoo ako. Nagpagupit at nagpakulay ulit ng buhok. Hinayaan maging tamad. Hindi nag bigay ng pressure sa sarili. Basta, ang laya ko.

Ngayong March, medyo mag hihigpit ako sa priorities. Kahit paonti onti, malinya yung mga dapat atupagin. Wala pa ding pressure pero hindi na dapat petiks. Tapusin one at a time yung mga bagay na nakalinya.

Bibitawan ko din yung mga hindi healthy sa buhay ko. Yung naalala lang ako kapag may kaylangan, tangina. May ganito pala sa buhay ko? Yung mga binibitawan ako kapag hindi na ako kaya. Baka nakakalimot tong mga to na ako ang master sa pag bitaw ng mga tao. Wala pang any any.

Ayon lang naman. Sana, wala masyadong bad shit this March. Mag iisang taon na tayo sa pandemic. Bobo ba din ng mga tao sa gobyerno. Bobo ng mga nag tatanggol sa gobyerno. Bobo lahat ng hindi pa rin nakikita ang mali sa sitwasyon ngayon.

Weekly na lang ako mag susulat dito, ang refreshing at pangpatulog lang din. Iba iba format depende sa mood ko. Ngayon, kalmado lang ang bakla.

WU Reviews: Never Have I Ever reviewed by Shelly Anand ‘08 (@shellypolitik) & Shloka Ananthanarayanan '08 (@shlokes)

Shloka: Oh where to begin? I binged through this show in a few hours and would happily have spent my whole week bingeing through more seasons. I went into this with high expectations, and incredibly, they were all exceeded.

First off, the reason I was most excited for this show is that it is based on a South Indian family. You never see South Indians on TV - even when Mindy Kaling was on The Office, she was the generic North Indian “Kelly Kapoor.” So to have a character named Devi Vishwakumar (a name that all the non-brown folk pronounce fully all the time without complaining!) was a revelation. As a Shloka Ananthanarayanan, I am here for this.

Shelly: Completely agree. So many depictions of Indians, whether in American media or in Bollywood, are hegemonized by North Indians and Punjabis (Mindy’s use of “Kapoor” in the Office, a Punjabi last name). It’s not only a disservice to the diversity of the subcontinent and India but also a disservice to North Indians who are super ignorant and unaware of languages and cultures of South India. I really enjoyed learning words in this show, like kanna, which I quickly learned is the Tamil term of endearment for a loved one or a child like “beta” in Hindi.

Shloka: My heart melted every time someone would say “kanna.” I have family members who say it all the time but it was so refreshing to see it casually deployed on screen. This might also explain why one of my all-time favorite Bollywood movies as a child was Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, because the heroine played a South Indian and had a few lines in Tamil when she was talking to her father. It was the first time I felt represented in Bollywood.

Coming back to the show, there’s some pretty incisive commentary about what it means to be a brown person outside the motherland. In Episode 4, which is centered around Devi and her family attending Ganesh Puja, we get to delve deep into how Devi sometimes feels “too Indian” and then at other times is “not Indian enough.” It’s the classic immigrant dilemma. All three actresses who form the core trio of this show are spectacular, and each of them represent different stages of assimilation, all of which I thoroughly related to. As someone who only moved to the States in high school, I was not as American as Devi, who was born and raised here, though after all these years, I’ve definitely gotten there. I’m not as Indian as her mom, Nalini, or her cousin, Kamala, who both grew up in India, but like Kamala, who moved to the US for her engineering degree at Caltech, I can relate to her gradual Americanization.

Shelly: Episode 4 was definitely one of my favorite episodes, particularly John McEnroe’s describing and explaining the phenomenon that is the “Indian auntie.” Devi’s experience as the daughter of Indian immigrants was really reminiscent of my experience growing up though I have to say she encounters way less bullying, which speaks so much perhaps to the area she is living in and the times we are living in. It was refreshing to see a show where almost all of the main characters are people of color including the popular cute guy she is lusting after.

I was a bit surprised though about the whole ABCD trope (American Born Confused Desi). I would hope that kids of Indian origin growing up today would feel more comfortable with their culture and identity than they were when I was growing up. I was also surprised that they decided to depict parents as immigrants rather than second generation Indian Americans since so many South Asian kids in school now are third generation like my kids.

There has been some critical commentary about the show as well. In Episode 4, Nalini discourages Kamala from sitting next to a woman who married a Muslim. This same woman later tells Kamala that she is divorced and she should have just married a Hindu like she was supposed to. Showing the pervasive anti-Muslim bias is so real and true for Hindu communties and Hindu American communities but there was no follow up or push back.

Then Nalini makes a seemingly pro Modi comment stating that asking a pandit to take an uber was like asking Modi to use postmates.

With everything happening in India right now, I definitely picked up on these two moments in this episode. But I really didn’t expect Mindy to address these issues in a meaningful way. While other Indian American celebrities like Hari Kondabolu and Padma Lakshmi condemned the Citizenship Amendment Act and the killing of Muslims in Delhi earlier this year, Mindy remained mostly silent.

I also saw some folks tweeting about the issue of caste representation. I am not familiar with how caste is manifested in the Tamil Hindu community but I learned from another Tamil Hindu on Twitter that this family is pretty explicitly Brahmin. Caste is one of the major points of oppression within the Hindu community that has not been dealt with in a meaningful way and there is much work to be done to eliminate caste bias as well as ensure representation of Dalits, Bahujans, and Adivasis in media both in India and here in the US.

All that being said, my favorite response to all the critiques of Mindy’s show was something along the lines of “it’s Mindy Kaling, wtf did you expect, a Naxalite uprising?”

Shloka: Yeah, I never expected a nuanced take on issues affecting India today - this is a show built largely around Mindy’s worldview, which has always been decidedly apolitical. So while agreed on all those points, that is NOT why anyone should be watching this show. You know why you should be watching? All the jokes. So many one-liners, so many rich layers of hilarity. At one point when someone asks Devi’s mom if she could turn the AC on, she gets angry, declaring “there are people in Siberia who would kill to be this hot!” I giggled for a good long while over that one. This is a show that really revels in well-observed and precise humor, which is what I demand from all my comedies.

But whilst technically a comedy, this show is also incredibly serious and takes a deep dive into grief and mental health, topics that Indians are generally loath to explore. Devi sees a therapist to deal with her father’s recent death and while most of her therapy sessions are consumed by her sex-crazed high school hijinks, her therapist is always patiently pointing out that maybe what Devi really needs is to be processing her grief rather than distracting herself with boys and the pursuit of popularity. Everything gets incredibly emotional in the last two episodes and it’s a reminder that being stoic and just ignoring the things that make you feel bad are not effective ways of dealing with your emotions.

Shelly: I was really happy with the way mental health and the way it’s still so taboo in the South Asian community was portrayed here. I wondered how much of Devi’s avoidance of talking about her father was her own trauma versus her discomfort because of her upbringing around talking about pain, feelings, and generally not being ok. You can tell her mother also pushed down her emotions and didn’t take the time to process her husband’s death. The scene when Nalini, Devi’s mother, goes to talk to Devi’s therapist is a powerful one. Recognizing that her daughter was in therapy but then dismissing therapy as being for “white people” is true for not only South Asians but many communities of color in the US. I was really glad to see mental health and the need for mental health treatment addressed in this show.

In summary - we both recommend Never Have I Ever. It does some things well, needs to work on a whole bunch of other things, but in the end, is a delightful binge watch with some much-needed South Asian representation. Give it a whirl and let us know what you think!

It is so amazing na di tayo magkasama pero parang ang dami dami nating napaguusapan. Thank you sa lahat ng mga itinulong niyo saakin, sa character development ko :)) i think you guys molded me more than my parents did kasi for how many years ive been with you feeling ko na kuha ko na din personality niyo. CRAZY

Hi, Love!

I’ve always wanted to call you that. LOVE. How are you? How are we? It’s been more than a year. Crazy, isn’t it?

So allow me to refresh how this craziness began. I love to reminisce you know. It’s the only thing I do when “us” seem to blur sometimes. I try my hardest to remember how far we’ve become. How close we are now. How comfortable I am when I speak to you. I love to be reminded of the good things, of the sweetest moments, of the near-romance that the rest of the world doesn’t know about. And I pray to God every single night that this secret of ours will reach the people who needs to hear it one day. And by that time, I hope we’re together to tell it because finally... we made it.

So here it goes...

Year-end 2019. Our turning point. Plenty of things have already happened before that and I plan to write a separate entry about it. For now, let me focus on that year-end party.

It was a very endearing night. The wind was chilly as expected for a holiday season. Me and my friends got to the venue first. We were waiting for the rest so we started the little chitchats and we helped prepare the food. They asked me to tell you to buy “fishballs” so we can have an extra pulutan. I chatted you. You replied agreeing with me. Have I told you this yet? Doon pa lang sa parte na sinabihan kitang bumili ng fishballs, nagpapanic na agad ako. It was probably because I got a little pressured by your hilarious condition when you accepted my invitation for that event. Naaalala mo pa ba? Sabi mo sakin sasama ka “basta ba magpapaka-wasted ka (ako)” so I can spill and drop the names of Crushes A, B, and C. You were only joking, of course. But as an awkward human, I couldn’t help but feel shy.

Few minutes later, you arrived with your two other friends. You were wearing a mustard yellow shirt underneath a black jacket paired with a black fitted denim pants and black sneakers. Your neck was adorned with a silver necklace and your left wrist with a bracelet and a white watch. It was a simple getup but you were dashing that very night.

You sat beside me. I panicked again for a moment. But there was something in your warmth that got me so relaxed. We started to catch up. Isang tanong, isang sagot. Awkwaaaaard. But it was funny though.

Fast forward to exchange gifts. The first draw was called off because I picked my own. On the second one, to my surprise, you got mine. There were tons of teasing from our friends as they thought you handpicked my present. And I always wonder if you randomly got it or you personally chose it. So which is which? I want to know.

Then the highlights came. Liquor were mixed. Shots after shots. Hard drinks after hard drinks. We were all laughing, talking, drinking. Carpe diem-ing. All of us were enjoying the moment. And I swear to God, it was one of the happiest memories of my life.

You opened your phone camera and took random shots of me. I felt my face flushed. So I tried to snatch your phone away but you wouldn’t let me. We were grappling over it but it turned out we were unconsciously hugging each other. Then one of our friends blurted out, “May nagyayakapan na dito sa tabi ko.” I smiled inwardly as I was too kilig to realize you were trying to flirt. I wonder yet again. How did I look in those pictures? Did you keep it? Or did you delete it?

As the night sank deeper, I knew then that our feelings were growing deeper too. We talked, poked fun at each other, teased one another... until you grabbed my hand and intertwined it with yours. My heart pounded loudly in my chest. I froze and melted in my seat. I was panicking, hard. As a reflex, I loosen your grip and took my hand back. But you were so insistent that you kept on holding it tighter and tighter so as not to let of me. And I yielded to your sweetness and persistency. I was the happiest.

"Thank you." You whispered in my ears.

"For what?"

"Sa pakikinig sa lahat ng rants ko." You sheepishly confessed.

Never did I expect anything when you were sharing your rants with me. But hearing those words? Those grateful words? I teared up a little. My heart grew bigger.

And I've always wanted to say this.Thank you, too. You have no idea how happy I was (and I still am) to be trusted by you. I never wish you pain. But if you're hurting or if you feel sad, I hope I'll be the first person you'd run to. Tell me everything. Tell me anything. I want to learn your story. Basta ikaw, hindi ako hihindi.

The next thing we both knew was that we were taking photos. You initiated it... as you always do. You moved your face closer to mine. You leaned on me as you wrapped your arms around my waist. It was as if your frame was built just for me because we fitted, effortlessly. The air was cold but with your body huddled over my body, I could withstand any freezing night. I love your warmth. I long for your warmth. Kelan ka ba uuwi? Miss na kitaaaa. Sobra.

Everyone was already tanked but the shot was still making rounds. It was my turn to drink but I declined for I was feeling like throwing up. Instead you took the shot glass and gulped the liquid down. Then you ushered me inside the house.

I was laying down the floor ready to sleep. But you were still trying to flirt so I hid beneath the blanket to stop you. But you wouldn't stop. You slipped under it. And you were now on top of me. You kissed my cheeks and I was bewildered. You asked me to kiss you back. "Sa cheeks lang." You murmured. But I didn't... for I take kisses seriously. I got slightly annoyed so I got up. And I felt like you got a little mad because you suddenly wanted to go home.

You were too drunk to drive and I couldn't let you go in that state. So I robbed your keys and took you with me in a trike. Sabi mo pa nga dun ako matulog sa inyo. Hindi ko alam kung matatawa ba o maiinis ako. Pero syempre mas kilig! I love the clingy you. Please always be clingy with me. Make me weak. I wouldn't mind. Promise.

You sat on the trike floor. Your back resting on my chest. It appeared like I was hugging you from behind because you searched again for my hand and intertwined it passionately with yours. Then you gently planted your kisses. Once. Twice. Thrice and more. I lost count. I was too busy relishing every kisses... feeling the softness of your lips. We weren't the only passenger in that trike but I didn't give a damn. I was lost in the moment. I was enjoying the moment with you in my arms.

We reached the front of municipal hall. We got off and I was ready to walk you home. But I never did because I was told you can make it alone. As much as I wanted to protest, I knew it's time for me and my friends to go home too. So we let each other go and went our separate ways.

Come to think of it. That was the last time I saw you. You were waving your hands as the trike drove away right from where you were standing.

Crazy, isn't it? It's been more than a year yet I still think about that night.

I should've held your hands tighter.

I should've let you take more pictures of us.

I should've leaned on your shoulders.

I should've kissed you back.

Ikaw pa rin.

Sana ako pa rin.
