Avatar Cycle Trivia

Avatar Wan

Wan's name translates to "ten thousand" in Mandarin Chinese, as he lived ten thousand years before Avatar Korra. His name is also a pun on "one", as in Avatar number one.

Wan wore the colour of each of the four nations during his battle against Vaatu. His robes were yellow and orange (air), his armbands were green (earth), his sash was blue (water), and his scarf was red (fire).

In addition to becoming the first Avatar, Wan is also the first true firebender, as he was the first person to learn firebending from a dragon.

By fusing with Raava during Harmonic Convergence, Wan is technically the oldest Avatar to be identified, being 21 at the time.

The Earth Kingdom battlefield where Wan died is the same field that Zuko visits millennia later in Zuko Alone (Book 2: Episode 7). Interestingly, Wan first appeared in Beginnings, Part 1, which was the seventh episode of Legend of Korra, Book 2: Spirits.

Avatar Yangchen

Yangchen is the only known Avatar to have a sibling (Jetsun).

Yangchen is technically the first Avatar to have an established Team Avatar (not counting Wan and Raava).

Yangchen had split-personality disorder with her past lives, where she essentially suffered from nightmares of her past lives bleeding into her present self.

Yangchen's companion Kavik is the first person ever seen get chi-blocked.

Yangchen did not like the idea of people creating statues of herself in the future. Ironically, she was greatly revered in the Four Nations, and a statue each was built in both the Eastern and Western Air Temples.

Avatar Kuruk

Kuruk is currently the only known Avatar whose predecessor and successor were both women (Yangchen and Kyoshi respectively).

Kuruk had more lovers in 3 decades than Kyoshi did in over 2 centuries (the true story is more tragic).

Kuruk had a habit of challenging random people to feats of strength, which makes him the only known Avatar in history to have participated in an Agni Kai.

Kuruk was the best hunter and tracker in the history of the Four Nations. It's said there was nothing he couldn't hunt or track down (that includes spirits).

Kuruk is the only known Avatar to enter the Spirit World after death. Considering that only people with a special connection to the Spirit World can enter at death (such as Iroh and Yue), this means Kuruk must have had a spiritual connection rivalling that of most Air Nomad monks or nuns.

Avatar Kyoshi

Kyoshi is the only known Avatar known to be of mixed nationality; her father was from the Earth Kingdom, while her mother was a renegade Air Nomad.

Kyoshi had a rare condition with her earthbending where she could move large objects with ease but had difficulty in moving smaller objects (Suffering From Success).

Kyoshi has witnessed more passings of Sozin's Comet than anyone else, with three (not counting Lao Ge).

Kyoshi learned the secret to immortality from Lao Ge, which led her to have the longest lifespan of any Avatar.

Kyoshi has threatened both the Earth King and the Firelord.

Avatar Roku

Roku and Firelord Sozin share the same birthday.

Roku has been featured in the introduction sequences of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Roku is the only known Avatar to appear old when he was called upon by the current Avatar.

When Roku entered the Avatar State for the first time, he destroyed the Fire Sage Temple.

Nervous System Effects of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

AKA I spent hours suffering trying to find all this information and I want you to not have to do that!

Cerebrovascular

1. Stroke

"...studies have shown that stroke occurs more frequently in people with SLE than in the general population, with ischemic stroke developing in up to 20% of lupus patients..." link

2. Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

"CSVD is an umbrella term for a variety of conditions resulting from damage to small blood vessels in the brain. In most cases, CSVD is caused by the narrowing or obstruction of small blood vessels in the brain due to inflammation and/or a buildup of misfolded proteins called plaques. This chronic damage can starve brain cells of oxygen and cause internal bleeding, which in turn can damage other nearby brain cells." link

1. Optic Neuritis

"The optic nerve itself can sometimes be inflamed in lupus, or it can be affected when the blood vessels supplying the nerve are themselves inflamed (that is, ischemic optic neuropathy). This can lead to a change in vision, or even vision loss." - source

Leptospirosis: What it is, what it does, and how you can protect yourself and your pets.

People always have questions about leptospirosis (lepto) when they come into the clinic, especially in regards to the vaccine. This post will hopefully clear up those questions or any confusion regarding lepto and its vaccine, and why it's so serious. The information in this post comes from my formal education as a LVT, as well as other sources including the CDC, PAHO, and AVMA. If I missed anything or you see something that's incorrect, please let me know!

First and foremost: What is leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that effects human and non-human animals. It's caused by bacteria in the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms that can be very general. This leads to misdiagnoses. Animals such as dogs, livestock, and certain wildlife are all susceptible to infection.

How is leptospirosis spread?

Lepto is most often spread through contact with the urine of an infected animal. This is especially the case (but not the only case) with wild rodents. Infected dogs can seem healthy, but still pass the bacteria on in their urine. In urine-soaked soil, the bacteria can survive for weeks to months.

Dogs typically become infected when their mucous membranes or open wounds come into contact with urine or urine contaminated surfaces (like soil or water). Infection can also be spread through urine-contaminated bedding or food, or the tissues from the carcass of an infected animal. There have been rare instances where lepto has been transmitted by bite or breeding. A pregnant dog who is infected may pass the bacteria to her puppies through the placenta.

Humans contract lepto pretty much the same way: through contact with urine from an infected animal or urine-contaminated surfaces.

What are the signs and symptoms?

In humans:

High fever

Headache and muscle aches

Chills

Jaundice

Vomiting and diarrhea

Redness of the eyes

Abdominal pain

Rash

Humans can also be asymptomatic, which is particularly concerning. It usually takes anywhere from 2 days to 4 weeks post-exposure to the infection source before any symptoms are displayed. The illness begins abruptly and it may occur in 2 phases. The first phase is where you will see a lot of the general symptoms listed above. The person infected may recover for a period of time, but become ill again. The second phase is more severe, leading to kidney or liver failure, and possible meningitis. The illness can last a few days to 3 weeks or longer.

Without treatment, recovery can take several months.

In dogs:

Signs and symptoms may vary slightly depending on the strain of the infected bacteria. The signs are also very general in dogs, but the most common ones include:

Loss of appetite

Vomiting and diarrhea

Lethargy

Abdominal pain

Jaundice

Dehydration

Increased thirst and urination

Weight loss

Stiffness or muscle pain

The disease can also progress to kidney and liver failure in dogs, with damage to other organ systems also noted in the literature. Lepto can also cause bleeding disorders, which can lead to blood in urine, vomit, feces, or saliva, and petechiae on the mucous membranes or light colored skin.

Who is most at risk?

For humans, those who are most at risk include those who work with animals or outdoors where you come into contact with wildlife. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also mentions that sewer workers and military personnel are at-risk populations. Farmers (and generally people who work with livestock) also make the list, as do veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants.

For dogs, it's all of them. "All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors." (source: AVMA)

Situations that can increase the risk of your dog contracting leptospirosis are listed below:

Exposure to drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources (this includes puddles)

Roaming on rural property

Exposure to wild animals or farm animals, even if it's only in the yard

Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, boarding, or training facilities.

How is leptospirosis treated and diagnosed?

Disclaimer: I am NOT a medical doctor or DVM, but I am an LVT. If you think you're experiencing these symptoms, PLEASE go see your doctor. If you think your dog or any of your other animals are experiencing these symptoms, PLEASE take them to your vet.

Diagnosis in non-human animals:

Unfortunately, routine blood tests alone cannot diagnose leptospirosis. That's why it's important for your vet to use all information available to them (i.e. diagnostics, signs and symptoms, lifestyle, etc). There WILL be abnormal results for blood work, most likely high liver and/or kidney values and high white blood cell count. There are specific tests available for diagnosing lepto, such as the DNA-PCR and MAT tests. Both may be needed to reach or confirm a diagnosis. False negatives are possible, so your pet may be treated as if they have leptospirosis, even if the test results are negative. False positives are exceedingly rare.

Diagnosis in humans:

Leptospirosis is diagnosed in a similar fashion in humans. A physical exam, blood work, and urinalysis will likely be run. The same style of tests are used: DNA-PCR and MAT.

Treatment in non-human animals:

Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics and supportive care. Doxycycline is most commonly used, and will likely be prescribed for 2 weeks or more. Supportive care includes hospitalization with IV fluids and management of electrolyte levels. Additional medications and procedures may be necessary.

Treatment in humans:

The treatment is similar in humans, with antibiotics (usually doxycycline). Your doctor may also suggest to take ibuprofen and monitor yourself at home for less severe cases. If the case is severe, then you'll likely spend time in the hospital. Additional medications or procedures may also be necessary.

Outcomes:

In non-human animals:

Leptospirosis is responsive to treatment with antibiotics. Complete recovery is possible, but some animals that survive may be left with chronic kidney and liver disease. Some animals may not survive if the infection has gotten to the point where it causes severe organ damage or the ability of blood to form clots.

In humans:

You can survive leptospirosis. Most cases have either very mild symptoms that go away on their own, or none at all. Without treatment, leptospirosis can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death. PLEASE go see a doctor if you think you're experiencing any of these symptoms, especially together.

Prevention

How can you prevent infection and protect your pets?

For dogs, there's the leptospirosis vaccine. This is an annual vaccine that vaccinates against multiple strains of Leptospira. If you're worried about your dog having a vaccine reaction, let your vet know and they can administer an injection of diphenhydramine (generic benadryl) beforehand, OR you can ask them what the appropriate dose is for your dog and give them the respective amount at home (in tablets or liquid). Vaccine reactions are uncommon, but if they do happen, it's usually immediately after exposure to the vaccine. You can ask to stick around in the lobby/waiting area of your vet clinic for a few extra minutes if you're still concerned.

Limit your dog's access to standing water. Don't let them drink from it. Prevent rodent problems where you can by properly storing food items in appropriate containers, securing your garbage, and patching up any access points into your house if you see them. Try to avoid contact with wildlife, when possible.

For humans, the recommendations remain similar. Don't wade or swim in stagnant water, ESPECIALLY if you have open wounds. Avoid contact with wildlife. WASH YOUR HANDS, often and appropriately. USE PPE if you work in a veterinary setting and properly clean and disinfect surfaces and equipment. Make sure you know or research the area that you're in if you like swimming and boating. Check to see if there have been any recent lepto infections. Cover your scrapes and wounds with waterproof bandages and wear water shoes if possible.

Do you have sources about P-DID? Is really hard find about this disorder

Here's one, two, that talk very briefly about it.

There really isn't a lot of info, it's relatively new as a diagnosis, but its presentation has always been included in DID and OSDD/DDNOS.

That's where it gets tricky because it's hard to find articles about ANY kind of specific presentation. This is why articles on OSDD and DDNOS are scarce-- because it's all considered to stem from the same traumatic basis and have generally the same treatment, it's always lumped together.

The main difference from DID is that there very little switching. If it does happen, it's usually in very emotionally charged situations. Instead, alters typically just intrude-- what we usually call bleeding, blurry, or cocon scenarios.

Alters can be very elaborate and autonomous, or they can be mostly fragments. They can still talk to you, or not be capable of any communication aside from emotional intrusion.

They just very rarely switch.

I really like this article by Kluft (download link on site, if you don't want to read it all, start on page 17 of the PDF, or page 621 according to page number). It's super old and a bit long, but VERY interesting, I think you might get some use out of it.

AW YES ADHD GIOVANNI IS SO REAL DUDE!!!

Ok so like. I’m going to be honest the majority of it is projection. Giovanni is a character I heavily relate to on multiple levels and I see a lot of myself in him, and I’m tourettic, and I rarely see representation of it in Anything so I usually just grab characters and put the label on them. BUT I DO HAVE OTHER REASONS

ADHD Gio is actually one of them! ADHD, autism, and OCD are often comorbid with Tourettes and there’s some bleed-over between symptoms of those disorders. Having better focus can often make u tic less, and vice versa

Also, he’s a very eccentric and loud guy! A lot of tourettics make themselves loud and outspoken and attention grabbing purposefully to detract from how much attention we get from our tics. Can’t be judged for having a loud and disruptive disability if you’re just loud and disruptive in general!

And he yelps and squawks a lot and, while that’s not inherently indicative of Tourettes, I can view it through that lens with my beautiful mind if I so choose. Freedom of thought is beautiful.

Most of it is projection tho. He’s a loud, proud, eccentric guy who I relate to and imagining him having the same disability as me makes me feel less insecure about it

The boys sit in silence, wondering what to say to each other about the situation. They were all in shock. Too stunned to speak. They had a hybrid in their house. Injured and very much traumatised. Where do they go from here? They didn’t know. Were you legally adopted? From the black market? How did you end up where you were? There were so many questions that needed answers but they knew they’d not get an answer until they had your full trust, it was clear you’ve been through hell and back for a long time. 

“So…Where do we begin? We’ve got a lot to think and talk about.” Jimin murmurs sipping on his glass of water, tapping his fingers against the glass nervously, he and the boys had saved many hybrids before, but never has he seen someone in such a condition you were in and never had he had a strong attachment to one so fast either. In his whole career, he had never seen a hybrid like you. Or even in the condition, you were in. He was horrified. He wanted to protect you, keep you safe. Make you happy.

“Let’s start with where and how you found her Namjoon and Jimin. Talk us through that.” Hoseok says softly now home to talk about the situation at hand, his notebook out ready to take notes so he had everything to start an investigation. He couldn’t believe what he had heard when Namjoon called him and explained what was going on. He had yet to see you but from the description, Seokjin had given him he knew it was bad.

“Well, it was Jimin who noticed something wasn’t right. We come out of the building and he said he saw some guys dump something in the alleyway. I told him it was probably nothing but he was so sure something wasn’t right. When we looked we saw her there curled up barely conscious, bleeding heavily and her clothes were all dirty and basically like rags. I told Jimin to go get a blanket out of the car and when he had gone, I told her everything was going to be okay, that she was safe but just let out this weak laugh and said to me that’s what they all say, telling me to finish the job, to end it and make it quick…” Namjoon says trailing off just feeling his stomach churn again repeating the words you had pleaded to him.

“God, what did they do to her? She must have been suffering for such a long time.” Jungkook frowns, feeling his heart clench at the thought of what you had been through. He couldn't imagine ever hurting someone like this. People really are cruel.

"One day hopefully she will tell us but right now we need to give her space and let her build trust with us." Seokjin says with a small pout on his lips as they all agree with him.

"Jimin, did you see the guys who just dumped her there? Could you describe them?" Hoseok asks as Jimin sucks in a breath, brows furrowed as he begins to think.

"I saw them but not much. It was too dark to see them completely. There were two of them. One was quite tall the other just a bit shorter…uhh both were all in black, like trench coats, the tall guy was brawny whilst the other was very slim. I didn't see their faces. That's all I've got, I'm sorry." Jimin says sheepishly but smiles softly as Hoseok shakes his head at him and ruffles his hair.

"It's better than nothing Jiminie."

"Where do you think she's come from? Fight ring? Auction? Show pet for some cruel rich person? She could have come from anywhere with her being such a rare hybrid and being a strong predator at that." Yoongi sighs in frustration. Either way, wherever you came from was inhumane and they were going to do everything in their power to get you justice. To prevent this from happening to another hybrid.

"No idea but we start in one section and eliminate them until we find the suspect. We'll get to the bottom of this. I promise." Hoseok says, closing his notebook before looking around and realizing somebody was still missing.

"Where's Tae? He's been gone for a while."

"I'm right here, I'm fine. She's awake now, I sat with her whilst she ate but at a distance. She's terrified and doesn't trust any human. She thought I'd drugged the food. She's never even eaten human food before. She's starving. Is it okay if I give her a second plate?" Taehyung says quietly and Seokjin nods immediately, quick to fill the plate up again but this time with more on it so you had a big plate to help fill you up and gain nutrition.

"Of course, she needs all the nutrition she can get. She's allowed as much as she wants." Seokjin says before handing him back the plate full of food. 

"Here give her this. It's electrolytes. It will help hydrate her too." Jungkook says quickly popping an electrolyte tablet into a glass of water and handing it to Taehyung. They wanted to provide to you in any way they could. Nurse you back to health. Health you most likely haven't had in a very long time.

"Has she spoken properly to you yet?" Namjoon asks hesitantly and Taehyung shakes his head disheartened.

"No. Not properly. Her voice is so soft though. It's pretty. I could listen to her for hours. The only thing I've gotten is her diet was pellets, she asked why I was giving her human food and her name. Her name is Y/N. It's such a pretty name like her." Taehyung sighs. He felt a deep attachment to you and he couldn't understand why.

"It is indeed. Yoongi can check the system now for any hybrids registered under that name and her hybrid breed. Do her bandages need changing?" Jungkook asks and Taehyung shakes his head.

"No not yet but will most likely need to later tonight." 

Taehyung takes his leave and Yoongi had already opened his laptop to search the system. It couldn't wait until tomorrow. The sooner they started. The better. They needed to see if you were in the system and under an ‘owner’. 

“I can’t guarantee I’ll find anything but it’ll be a start of ticking things off. If someone treats a Hybrid like this, then they’re not going to want their name in the system.” Yoongi sighs as he begins searching the system. He hoped he found something, even if it was the smallest piece of information. They needed something.

“Hey Y/N, I’ve got you more food and some water…” Taehyung says frowning as he enters the room and sees you sat staring at yourself in the mirror that hung across from you. You looked vacant and empty. As if there was no one behind your eyes. He was concerned.

“Y/N? Is everything okay?” He asks slowly placing the drink and food on the bedside table beside you before moving away so he didn’t scare you and kneeling so his height didn’t intimidate you as you look at him. What was going on in that sweet head of yours?

“I should not eat anymore s-sir. I will gain too much weight. I was greedy. I should have not eaten the first one.” You say and Taehyung’s breath hitches. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He never wanted you to call him sir ever. He felt horrified at the thought that you weren’t skinny enough or that eating the plate of food he had given you was greedy. You had suffered terribly.

“Don’t call me sir kitty, you never have to use that here. Just call me Taehyung or Tae. You are an equal here okay? Nobody is ever going to belittle you or hurt you or make you do anything you don’t want to do. It was not greed eating that food, that is hunger and that’s okay. Hunger is normal and everybody feels it. It’s okay to gain weight, you have to because right now you’re something called malnourished, which means you’re very underweight and haven’t had the nourishment you need so please, don’t restrict yourself or feel any guilt eating. No one will be mad at you.” Taehyung says softly, he felt angry. So incredibly angry at the people who did this to you. He wanted them punished for it and when they were, he’d feel no remorse.

He could see you weren’t convinced. Not at all. Your trauma and forced bad habits were dug so deep into you that it was going to be something hard to break. He knew that just one speech wasn’t going to be enough, that through this process there were going to be good days and bad days. He couldn’t convince you on his own. It was time to introduce you to the others. Prove to you that they all weren’t like the evil humans you have met.

“Come with me, you don’t have to trust me just yet but please come downstairs with me, meet the others so I can show you we aren’t like others and if you feel too uncomfortable or overwhelmed you can come back here straight away okay? You have my word.” Taehyung says, carefully holding his hand out for you to take giving you the sweetest smile you had ever seen. You were hesitant. So damn hesitant. What if it was a trap? What if they hurt you? But the longer you stared at him and listened to his steady heartbeat the more you believed he wasn’t lying. So you took the risk. You placed your hand in his so carefully, shivering at the sensation of his warm gentle hand engulfing yours as he helps you up and begins to guide you down the stairs and into the dining room where six other men sat, pausing their conversation and staring at you and Taehyung in surprise. You were startled by the sudden attention, letting out a tiny squeak and slipping behind Taehyung to hide. Their hearts melt at the sight, you were so cute and small.

“We’ve come down to talk to everyone so she can meet you all. To see that she is safe in this home. Kitten won’t eat anymore because she thinks she isn’t allowed to gain weight. Come on Y/N you’re okay, let’s sit down to talk, no one will hurt you or shout okay?” Taehyung murmurs before gently guiding you to sit down.

“Hello, you’ve already met Tae, I’m Namjoon and this here is Jimin. We were the ones that found you can you remember?” Namjoon says kindly giving you a small smile. Right off the bat, you could tell this man was a little reserved and by the tone of his voice, he held a lot of authority. It intimidated you slightly. You shake your head, keeping your head cast down and eyes down at your hands that you nervously fiddled with. You couldn’t remember a thing.

“That’s okay! It was a hard time for you, it’s okay for you to not remember it or even want to remember it.” Jimin adds he felt awful. He could see how uncomfortable you were.

“Anyway there’s Yoongi, Seokjin, Jungkook and Hoseok. We’re all here to look after you and keep you safe alright?” Taehyung continues as you nod curtly, giving each of them quick glances so you could memorise their names to the face, all of them giving you a reassuring smile. You were stunned at how handsome they were. They were nothing like your past owners so far.

"This is a safe space Y/N. Nobody is going to shame you, hurt you, or anything like that, we don't expect you to trust us immediately and that's okay, we'll earn it. No matter how long it takes. You are cared for and safe here. You are not a pet or anything like that. You're still human just like us at the end of the day. We want to protect you and get you justice towards whoever did this to you okay? Do you understand?" Namjoon says gently sitting across from you ensuring there was distance so you felt comfortable. He wanted to give you space you've probably never had before. Let you come to him. The last thing he wanted to do was scare you.

"Yes, master. I understand. I promise not to make you angry." You say in a hushed voice, keeping your eyes down. You had been taught to never be loud or look your superior in the eyes as a sign of respect. And with how much authority this man held you certainly didn’t want to anger him. You didn't want to mess up. They had been so nice to you, you feared one wrong move then they would mistreat you. The boys felt nauseous hearing you sound so submissive and fearful. Calling Namjoon master.

"Little cub. We are not you're masters. You never ever have to call us that. We aren't like the others. We don't own you, we don't want anything from you nothing at all. You are your own person. Just call us by our names. We aren't superiors, we're just like you. Human. Yes, you may be part leopard too but you are also a human being. You can speak louder and freely. You're thoughts, opinions and feelings are all valid in this house okay? You can look at us. Nothing will happen. We won't ever get mad at you okay? That is something we promise." Yoongi says softly feeling his heart sink into his stomach. You have so much trauma and fear built up that you really did think all humans were the same. And at that moment he knew. They all knew. They were going help you conquer it all and find the person you really were behind it all and they couldn't wait to see it, the real you. They were going to protect you no matter what it took.

“O-Okay Mas- I-I mean Yoongi. I’m sorry.” You fret looking up terrified that you had upset him by disobeying a rule he had given you but nothing happens he just gives you a smile and nods at you in understanding. It was going to be a hard adjustment for you they understood that.

“There are no rules here sweetpea okay? You can roam this house freely, do whatever you please we just ask you one thing. Communicate with us. Whenever you want or need anything. If you want to ask something or talk to us about anything, you can. We’re here to listen and help provide for you.” Hoseok says and you stare in surprise. Why were you being given so much freedom? 

“Like we said little one, we aren’t like those horrible people, we fight for your rights, protection and freedom. You will not be treated illy here. Please at least trust us on that.” Jungkook coos and you nod slowly, you were so overwhelmed by what they were doing so far, the kindness, gentleness, freedom and respect they were giving you. It all felt too good to be true. But as you stared at every single one of them you knew. You knew they were being truthful.

Maybe you could trust them after all.

She'd never purposely want to hurt a hair on you but when her vision goes red, the short glint of light in her eyes disappear and you can no longer see behind her gaze.

it's completely neurotic when this happens, like she can't help it. Similar to an impulse disorder she's driven without any thought, she finds herself back in Seattle mentally and her fight or flight response kicks in.

Like a small puppy being cornered it's reactive and destructive (either to the environment or to herself)

When this happens, which is extremely rare, in this case because you suppress those urges in her mind normally, but you also bring out both the best and the worst in her, like a catalyst triggering her cognitive dissonance.

When she first did something like this, you forgave her thinking she was overwhelmed and having a flashback of sorts. The second time was a little different, since she was of sound mind and the only reason she got violent was because you were speaking to a bitch she told you not to.

You were left bleeding from your nose because you tried to defend that whore to Ellie, and she doesn't take that lightly. Textbook abusive relationship, she tells you she did it for your own good.

"This hurts me more than it hurts you baby," and "I know what's best for you, you should be listening to me."

She comforts you though, right after the assault. She does feel bad, but truly believes she's doing whats needed to be done.

You were really too sweet for this world, a naive little girl, a little bunny in a dirty and dangerous world that would prey on you. Hurt you and take you away from her. She nodded to herself about taking you, convinced she did the right thing.

After that she doesn't really give you time to ponder on it as she floods you with affection, partly because she doesn't like to see you hurting and partly because she's afraid you might leave her.

She wouldn't let you leave, though. But it's better to play safe than be sorry.

do you know the difference between P-DID and non-possessive form DID? is it just amnesia + the elaboration of alters?

Let's start with DID

Possession/non possession type DID doesn't really have anything to do with amnesia and elaboration of alters. It's more about how it's experienced.

(to be honest, I don't find the terms very useful these days, I think they were more used before the internet, when people weren't as aware of what DID was and what was happening, and they're not too often used clinically anymore)

Possession type is the feeling of being taken over. Like someone else is controlling your body. It's usually applied to religious experiences because it's typically about, well, possession, and it was initially used to refer to people who said it felt as though an outside entity was taking over, like ghosts or spirits. It's used when those experiences are occurring outside of normal cultural practices, and it's usually quite distressing.

It's evolved within the communities (that seem intent on continuing to use the terms) to include what I like to call "hard switches", which is where you are simply no longer in control. You have fully switched and another alter is in full control, someone snapped their fingers and it's done. There's no specific measure of how aware you need to be, and blackout amnesia or full awareness still counts. It feels a bit like you've just been suplexed into/out of front. I say it's evolved because as more and more people look to the internet for answers, awareness of the experience grows and most tend to realize they're not actually possessed pretty early on.

All in all, outside of the feeling of an outside entity or force, it's mostly used for very overt and obvious presentations. True possession form is usually diagnosed now as possessive trance disorder in the ICD, when it's only outside or external entities. Once there are internal entities, it's back to DID.

Non-possession type is experienced more as intrusions-- this means emotional bleeding between alters, hearing them talk about how bad your choices are, some forms of cocon. It's alters intruding on you in some way. Within the community (by those who want to continue to use the terms), it's evolved to include what I call "soft switches," which is the gradual switch, where it's happened before you're aware. It's more... Comfortable than hard switches, with a "natural" feel to it.

You'll notice that these are both terms to describe switches. It's individual experiences among different types of systems.

Partial DID from the ICD is considered to include most forms of OSDD (1) (other OSDD (1) experiences fall under the ICD's DID section), but it mostly includes non switching systems. The ICD is extremely broad with DID, so most "typical" OSDD presentations fall into DID in the ICD.

Just to round things out, let's take a super quick look at the four different diagnoses for DID. It'll help showcase the different ways the ICD and the DSM break down dissociation types. You'll notice there's a bit of overlap, and that's due to the simple fact of the two manuals drawing distinctions in different ways.

ICD 11 DID

Two or more distinct personality states that can, and do, take control (switch)

Alternation between distinct personality states is not always associated with amnesia, though it's often present at some point during the course of the disorder (ie, for childhood events), but not always

Intrusion, or non possessive form, is common, in addition to switching

Encompasses DSM's DID and some presentations of OSDD 1b

ICD 11 Partial DID

Two or more distinct personality states, but switching is rare. There may be occasional, limited and transient episodes in which a distinct personality state assumes executive control to engage in circumscribed behaviours (e.g., in response to extreme emotional states or during episodes of self-harm or the reenactment of traumatic memories).

One personality state remains dominant

Intrusions are very common, making up the majority of the presentation of P-DID

Amnesia is considered rare in P-DID

Encompasses similar presentations to OSDD 1a and some types of OSDD 1b

DSM DID

Two or more distinct personality states that can, and do, take control (switch)

Alternation between distinct personality states is not always associated with amnesia, though it's usually and typically present at some point during the course of the disorder (ie, for childhood events), but not always (the weight of the amnesia criteria will depend on where you're being diagnosed-- Europe and the US evaluate the amnesia differently). For the most part, amnesia of some kind is required, though memories can be found and a diagnosis of DID will remain.
