Avatar Cycle Trivia

Avatar Wan

Wan's name translates to "ten thousand" in Mandarin Chinese, as he lived ten thousand years before Avatar Korra. His name is also a pun on "one", as in Avatar number one.

Wan wore the colour of each of the four nations during his battle against Vaatu. His robes were yellow and orange (air), his armbands were green (earth), his sash was blue (water), and his scarf was red (fire).

In addition to becoming the first Avatar, Wan is also the first true firebender, as he was the first person to learn firebending from a dragon.

By fusing with Raava during Harmonic Convergence, Wan is technically the oldest Avatar to be identified, being 21 at the time.

The Earth Kingdom battlefield where Wan died is the same field that Zuko visits millennia later in Zuko Alone (Book 2: Episode 7). Interestingly, Wan first appeared in Beginnings, Part 1, which was the seventh episode of Legend of Korra, Book 2: Spirits.

Avatar Yangchen

Yangchen is the only known Avatar to have a sibling (Jetsun).

Yangchen is technically the first Avatar to have an established Team Avatar (not counting Wan and Raava).

Yangchen had split-personality disorder with her past lives, where she essentially suffered from nightmares of her past lives bleeding into her present self.

Yangchen's companion Kavik is the first person ever seen get chi-blocked.

Yangchen did not like the idea of people creating statues of herself in the future. Ironically, she was greatly revered in the Four Nations, and a statue each was built in both the Eastern and Western Air Temples.

Avatar Kuruk

Kuruk is currently the only known Avatar whose predecessor and successor were both women (Yangchen and Kyoshi respectively).

Kuruk had more lovers in 3 decades than Kyoshi did in over 2 centuries (the true story is more tragic).

Kuruk had a habit of challenging random people to feats of strength, which makes him the only known Avatar in history to have participated in an Agni Kai.

Kuruk was the best hunter and tracker in the history of the Four Nations. It's said there was nothing he couldn't hunt or track down (that includes spirits).

Kuruk is the only known Avatar to enter the Spirit World after death. Considering that only people with a special connection to the Spirit World can enter at death (such as Iroh and Yue), this means Kuruk must have had a spiritual connection rivalling that of most Air Nomad monks or nuns.

Avatar Kyoshi

Kyoshi is the only known Avatar known to be of mixed nationality; her father was from the Earth Kingdom, while her mother was a renegade Air Nomad.

Kyoshi had a rare condition with her earthbending where she could move large objects with ease but had difficulty in moving smaller objects (Suffering From Success).

Kyoshi has witnessed more passings of Sozin's Comet than anyone else, with three (not counting Lao Ge).

Kyoshi learned the secret to immortality from Lao Ge, which led her to have the longest lifespan of any Avatar.

Kyoshi has threatened both the Earth King and the Firelord.

Avatar Roku

Roku and Firelord Sozin share the same birthday.

Roku has been featured in the introduction sequences of both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Roku is the only known Avatar to appear old when he was called upon by the current Avatar.

When Roku entered the Avatar State for the first time, he destroyed the Fire Sage Temple.

AKA I spent hours suffering trying to find all this information and I want you to not have to do that!

Cerebrovascular

1. Stroke

"...studies have shown that stroke occurs more frequently in people with SLE than in the general population, with ischemic stroke developing in up to 20% of lupus patients..." link

2. Cerebral Small Vessel Disease

"CSVD is an umbrella term for a variety of conditions resulting from damage to small blood vessels in the brain. In most cases, CSVD is caused by the narrowing or obstruction of small blood vessels in the brain due to inflammation and/or a buildup of misfolded proteins called plaques. This chronic damage can starve brain cells of oxygen and cause internal bleeding, which in turn can damage other nearby brain cells." link

꩜ I like the idea of his vision either being normal or extremely messed up depending on what stage he's at! (inspo: astray-anomaly)

꩜ But not just does his vision get incredibly blurry but he has a form of prosopagnosia that gets worse around stage 3 or 4. Where he even struggles to differentiate the Star Sanes from his team.

꩜ He is rarely in stage 1, it's very rare to see him like that. The only person who's been able to see him like that is Nightmare and Color, no one else would see him like that.

꩜ I do think he would have DID or at least something similar to it. Along with MAJOR PTSD, he would have some major trust issues. So getting close to him would be EXTREMELY hard, he most likely would be hypervigilant, and have flashbacks.

꩜ He has depersonalization disorder, I think for him he would have the mindset/coping mechanism of "This is all a game nothing is real", and would try to disconnect from reality and what he's doing. This would cause him to feel like he's just watching himself act out his violent behavior without controlling it.

꩜ He experiences hallucinations, not to the same degree as Dust who would have constant hallucinations, but Killer would have his moments. He'd mainly suffer from auditory hallucinations, voices constantly whispering to him. Some examples are commanding voices such as a voice saying, "Hurt him now," "Kill her," or "End your life." or some voices insulting him "You deserved everything' or "You deserve this punishment", Voices arguing with each other Example: Voices saying, "We should kill him," followed by another voice saying, "No, wait, he isn’t ready yet," making him paranoid. And last distorted sounds of violence, the sound of a knife cutting through flesh, yelling, screaming even in a silent room.

꩜ Bro abuses percs like his life depends on it, even though sometimes it can cause his paranoia and hallucinations to get worse but the highs where he just gets a rush of pure euphoria, all the negative emotions and thoughts leaving him, all the aches and pains in his body magically fading away replaced by warmth and numbness are what keeps him coming back to it.

꩜ He cuts himself for sure, there is nothing he can do to permanently escape from the quilt he feels from killing everyone he loves, his friends, his neighbors, and his brother. He definitely gets a rush whenever he cuts a little too deep, even though he doesn't actively try to kill himself he's not opposed to one day just bleeding out. He won't take care of the wounds either, he'll leave them to fester, bleed, and possibly get an infection. He'll even get injured on purpose during battles, just in case one day it'll kill him. Also because he just likes the physical pain, it's easier to focus on than what's going on inside his head.

꩜ Since he hardly takes care of his own wounds, he doesn't bother to bathe that much, he'll hardly ever change his clothes unless they're completely torn up or nightmare says something about it, though he hardly does. Even if he was to change he'll just get into less dirty clothes. He doesn't do his laundry anyway. Showers, brushing his teeth, and taking care of himself in general are basically nonexistent to him. He claims it's because he's lazy if asked why, but he just doesn't see himself worthy of such things.

꩜ He doesn't eat much either, he doesn't completely starve himself but just like every other problem he has, he just doesn't see himself good enough to eat.

꩜ He has major night terrors, he hardly gets any sleep which absolutely crushes him, if there's anything a Sans is good at it's sleeping. For him, it's just another soul-crushing reminder of what he used to be, happy, punny, a fun-loving skeleton...now he's just a shell of what he used to be.

Leptospirosis: What it is, what it does, and how you can protect yourself and your pets.

People always have questions about leptospirosis (lepto) when they come into the clinic, especially in regards to the vaccine. This post will hopefully clear up those questions or any confusion regarding lepto and its vaccine, and why it's so serious. The information in this post comes from my formal education as a LVT, as well as other sources including the CDC, PAHO, and AVMA. If I missed anything or you see something that's incorrect, please let me know!

First and foremost: What is leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that effects human and non-human animals. It's caused by bacteria in the genus Leptospira. In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms that can be very general. This leads to misdiagnoses. Animals such as dogs, livestock, and certain wildlife are all susceptible to infection.

How is leptospirosis spread?

Lepto is most often spread through contact with the urine of an infected animal. This is especially the case (but not the only case) with wild rodents. Infected dogs can seem healthy, but still pass the bacteria on in their urine. In urine-soaked soil, the bacteria can survive for weeks to months.

Dogs typically become infected when their mucous membranes or open wounds come into contact with urine or urine contaminated surfaces (like soil or water). Infection can also be spread through urine-contaminated bedding or food, or the tissues from the carcass of an infected animal. There have been rare instances where lepto has been transmitted by bite or breeding. A pregnant dog who is infected may pass the bacteria to her puppies through the placenta.

Humans contract lepto pretty much the same way: through contact with urine from an infected animal or urine-contaminated surfaces.

What are the signs and symptoms?

In humans:

High fever

Headache and muscle aches

Chills

Jaundice

Vomiting and diarrhea

Redness of the eyes

Abdominal pain

Rash

Humans can also be asymptomatic, which is particularly concerning. It usually takes anywhere from 2 days to 4 weeks post-exposure to the infection source before any symptoms are displayed. The illness begins abruptly and it may occur in 2 phases. The first phase is where you will see a lot of the general symptoms listed above. The person infected may recover for a period of time, but become ill again. The second phase is more severe, leading to kidney or liver failure, and possible meningitis. The illness can last a few days to 3 weeks or longer.

Without treatment, recovery can take several months.

In dogs:

Signs and symptoms may vary slightly depending on the strain of the infected bacteria. The signs are also very general in dogs, but the most common ones include:

Loss of appetite

Vomiting and diarrhea

Lethargy

Abdominal pain

Jaundice

Dehydration

Increased thirst and urination

Weight loss

Stiffness or muscle pain

The disease can also progress to kidney and liver failure in dogs, with damage to other organ systems also noted in the literature. Lepto can also cause bleeding disorders, which can lead to blood in urine, vomit, feces, or saliva, and petechiae on the mucous membranes or light colored skin.

Who is most at risk?

For humans, those who are most at risk include those who work with animals or outdoors where you come into contact with wildlife. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also mentions that sewer workers and military personnel are at-risk populations. Farmers (and generally people who work with livestock) also make the list, as do veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants.

For dogs, it's all of them. "All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors." (source: AVMA)

Situations that can increase the risk of your dog contracting leptospirosis are listed below:

Exposure to drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources (this includes puddles)

How is leptospirosis treated and diagnosed?

Disclaimer: I am NOT a medical doctor or DVM, but I am an LVT. If you think you're experiencing these symptoms, PLEASE go see your doctor. If you think your dog or any of your other animals are experiencing these symptoms, PLEASE take them to your vet.

Diagnosis in non-human animals:

Unfortunately, routine blood tests alone cannot diagnose leptospirosis. That's why it's important for your vet to use all information available to them (i.e. diagnostics, signs and symptoms, lifestyle, etc). There WILL be abnormal results for blood work, most likely high liver and/or kidney values and high white blood cell count. There are specific tests available for diagnosing lepto, such as the DNA-PCR and MAT tests. Both may be needed to reach or confirm a diagnosis. False negatives are possible, so your pet may be treated as if they have leptospirosis, even if the test results are negative. False positives are exceedingly rare.

Diagnosis in humans:

Leptospirosis is diagnosed in a similar fashion in humans. A physical exam, blood work, and urinalysis will likely be run. The same style of tests are used: DNA-PCR and MAT.

Treatment in non-human animals:

Leptospirosis is treated with antibiotics and supportive care. Doxycycline is most commonly used, and will likely be prescribed for 2 weeks or more. Supportive care includes hospitalization with IV fluids and management of electrolyte levels. Additional medications and procedures may be necessary.

Treatment in humans:

The treatment is similar in humans, with antibiotics (usually doxycycline). Your doctor may also suggest to take ibuprofen and monitor yourself at home for less severe cases. If the case is severe, then you'll likely spend time in the hospital. Additional medications or procedures may also be necessary.

Outcomes:

In non-human animals:

Leptospirosis is responsive to treatment with antibiotics. Complete recovery is possible, but some animals that survive may be left with chronic kidney and liver disease. Some animals may not survive if the infection has gotten to the point where it causes severe organ damage or the ability of blood to form clots.

In humans:

You can survive leptospirosis. Most cases have either very mild symptoms that go away on their own, or none at all. Without treatment, leptospirosis can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death. PLEASE go see a doctor if you think you're experiencing any of these symptoms, especially together.

Prevention

How can you prevent infection and protect your pets?

For dogs, there's the leptospirosis vaccine. This is an annual vaccine that vaccinates against multiple strains of Leptospira. If you're worried about your dog having a vaccine reaction, let your vet know and they can administer an injection of diphenhydramine (generic benadryl) beforehand, OR you can ask them what the appropriate dose is for your dog and give them the respective amount at home (in tablets or liquid). Vaccine reactions are uncommon, but if they do happen, it's usually immediately after exposure to the vaccine. You can ask to stick around in the lobby/waiting area of your vet clinic for a few extra minutes if you're still concerned.

Limit your dog's access to standing water. Don't let them drink from it. Prevent rodent problems where you can by properly storing food items in appropriate containers, securing your garbage, and patching up any access points into your house if you see them. Try to avoid contact with wildlife, when possible.

For humans, the recommendations remain similar. Don't wade or swim in stagnant water, ESPECIALLY if you have open wounds. Avoid contact with wildlife. WASH YOUR HANDS, often and appropriately. USE PPE if you work in a veterinary setting and properly clean and disinfect surfaces and equipment. Make sure you know or research the area that you're in if you like swimming and boating. Check to see if there have been any recent lepto infections. Cover your scrapes and wounds with waterproof bandages and wear water shoes if possible.

Here's one, two, that talk very briefly about it.

There really isn't a lot of info, it's relatively new as a diagnosis, but its presentation has always been included in DID and OSDD/DDNOS.

That's where it gets tricky because it's hard to find articles about ANY kind of specific presentation. This is why articles on OSDD and DDNOS are scarce-- because it's all considered to stem from the same traumatic basis and have generally the same treatment, it's always lumped together.

The main difference from DID is that there very little switching. If it does happen, it's usually in very emotionally charged situations. Instead, alters typically just intrude-- what we usually call bleeding, blurry, or cocon scenarios.

Alters can be very elaborate and autonomous, or they can be mostly fragments. They can still talk to you, or not be capable of any communication aside from emotional intrusion.

They just very rarely switch.

I really like this article by Kluft (download link on site, if you don't want to read it all, start on page 17 of the PDF, or page 621 according to page number). It's super old and a bit long, but VERY interesting, I think you might get some use out of it.

AW YES ADHD GIOVANNI IS SO REAL DUDE!!!

Ok so like. I’m going to be honest the majority of it is projection. Giovanni is a character I heavily relate to on multiple levels and I see a lot of myself in him, and I’m tourettic, and I rarely see representation of it in Anything so I usually just grab characters and put the label on them. BUT I DO HAVE OTHER REASONS

ADHD Gio is actually one of them! ADHD, autism, and OCD are often comorbid with Tourettes and there’s some bleed-over between symptoms of those disorders. Having better focus can often make u tic less, and vice versa

Also, he’s a very eccentric and loud guy! A lot of tourettics make themselves loud and outspoken and attention grabbing purposefully to detract from how much attention we get from our tics. Can’t be judged for having a loud and disruptive disability if you’re just loud and disruptive in general!

And he yelps and squawks a lot and, while that’s not inherently indicative of Tourettes, I can view it through that lens with my beautiful mind if I so choose. Freedom of thought is beautiful.

Most of it is projection tho. He’s a loud, proud, eccentric guy who I relate to and imagining him having the same disability as me makes me feel less insecure about it

He doesn't really take care of his hair, so they're very tangled most of the time, but they would be slighttly wavy;

Because of his facial wound, he rarely removes his mouthguard;

It's normal for him to keep it on, sometimes he sleeps with it;

HIS AGE

As previously mentioned, Toby seems young, he looks around 22/23 years old;

However our man is 27!!!

Yes, surprise, he's not a 17 year old teenager;

Precisely because he is getting older he has many resentments, after all he didn't enjoy his life as a student and adolescent at all nor his life as a child (given his abusive father);

For this reason he is very jealous of the kids and teens he meets during undercover missions;

(the voices tell him to kill everyone who has a good life but Toby knows it's wrong since it's not anyone else's fault that he had a horrible life);

(but still, Toby remains a violent and aggressive man, so as not to listen to the voices and not to actually kill everyone on sight, to prevent this, he will bite his nails until they bleed. Promptly Masky will hit him on the back of Toby's head telling him to stop giving in the eye);

HIS PRONOUNS (+ THE VOICES)

Toby uses male pronouns, however for the voices he uses they/them;

In fact, it happened that he spoke about the voices to some proxy or to a resident of the mansion;

I see Toby as pansexual;

Having never had the chance to fall in love with anyone during his life as a "normal" person, Toby is not attracted to any particular gender;

However, he would be interested in having a relationship and/or sexual intercourse with a possible partner;

To be fair, he had a short-lived relationship with Clockwork;

However, Toby has begun to see her not as his girlfriend but as an older sister/mother figure he can confide in;

One of Toby's problems is in fact that of becoming very attached to girls who are extremely protective of him and physically strong;

Precisely because they aren't weak and can defend themselves, Toby loses the instinct to protect them, an instinct he has with a weak partner;

He'll lose all romantic feelings;

I think this happens mostly with women since in his childhood the only positive figures were his mother and Lyra;

At that time he felt he HAD to protect them, however, when he couldn't, he fell into depression;

HIS PERSONALITY

His personality is difficult to define;

Given his Personality Disorder, even Toby no longer knows who the real Toby is;

However, he doesn't care much, he lives in a place (the mansion) where it's better not to show his true self, except to trusted people;

He remains a nervous guy around other men;

It is simply an instinct that he has;

He goes from being aggressive and troublesome to docile and not at all dangerous;

When he is docile, however, he may suddenly break down and become angry;

Even in these moments he NEVER raises his voice;

Sure he could hurt someone physically but never raise his voice;

He is the type who looks at you with cold and impassive eyes or with crazy eyes and without any kind of sanity, all this in silence;

Which is even worse than someone raising their voice because you don't know how far you've gone;

It rarely happens that Toby gets angry with someone in the mansion;

But when it happens the proxies must intervene immediately since it is forbidden to injure/kill visitors of the mansion;

HIS RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE RESIDENTS OF THE MANSION

Toby doesn't really have a social personality, as we've already seen;

He had a hard time getting used to the constant coming and going of murderers, ghosts and demons inside the mansion;

At first he avoided EVERYONE;

When he has become accustomed to all those new people he will continue not to talk to them;

Toby made friends anyway;

I see him getting along very well with Ben, Nina, Jane and EJ;

He get along with Ben and EJ as they are the quietest in the mansion;

(Ben offers Toby the weed to keep him from hearing the voices);

Toby gets along well with Jane and Nina because they have been very kind to him (Jane only drinks when Toby is not around);

He hates Jeff because he drinks a lot;

Furthermore, Jeff, when he's drunk, doesn't stay in his room but wanders around the mansion looking for someone to take the piss out of;

We can understand that Toby still doesn't like alcohol and heavy drinkers;

He avoids Kagekao and Liu/Sully, however he tolerates them more than Jeff since they don't drink until they get drunk;

THINGS HE LIKES

To be alone: given his personality it's obvious that, even if he has some friends, he much prefers to spend time with himself and the voices;

Stargazing: observing the stars calms him, seeing the many white lights in the ink black sky gives him serenity. He doesn't mind doing it in company, sometimes he invites Ben to the roof and together they smoke weed in silence;

Smoking weed: he never did it as a teenager because he didn't have the time or the money but when he became friends with Ben he tried it... and he liked it! He finally manages not to hear the voices;

Listen to music: banal but understandable. Toby never had much free time in his childhood to have hobbies but I think he would have liked to play the electric guitar or bass. Unfortunately, he would not have been able to play either instrument given his frequent tics, especially under pressure. He listens mostly to songs with electric guitar solos;

Long walks: Toby walks in the woods alone a lot for the same reason he stargazes. He enjoys observing nature around him so much! He can also collect small treasures such as stones, leaves, flowers and much more;

Piercings: one little hcs I have for Toby is the presence of piercings! I think he likes them a lot because he feels valued with them, Toby is a little bit insecure about his appearance but with piercings he looks very cool! He has snakebites and an eyebrow piercing;

THINGS HE HATES

Alcohol: as I have said a thousand times Toby has alcohol-related traumas. He hates the smell, its effects, its taste and the people who drink A LOT of it;

Cars: when the car accident happened Toby got that big wound and lost Lyra. This was a lot for him in just one day. Furthermore, after his father's missing presence at the hospital even after hearing about the accident, it made Toby realize how little that man cared about them;

Bullies: he OBVIOUSLY hates bullies. He knows what it feels like to be bullied, especially he hates people who say "oh, well, someone make the bullying come back, please.". That's a big no for Toby, and if he hears someone say that, they should be prepare to be dead or something;

Toxic People: he hates these kinds of people with all his heart. Why does one person have to ruin another just for his own entertainment? what is the meaning of this? (I don't think Toby realizes that, through his 'job', he actually ruins people's lives. As already mentioned, the voices muffle his sensible and human thoughts);

Loud noises: I think Toby prefers silence to noise. He doesn't really know what silence is. Most of the time, although there are no outside noises, Toby only hears the voices that keep whispering things to him, sometimes giggling and other times even screaming, consequently noises outside of the voices worsen his headaches;

I consider Toby a really controversial character but, somehow, very fun to describe and write about ^^

She'd never purposely want to hurt a hair on you but when her vision goes red, the short glint of light in her eyes disappear and you can no longer see behind her gaze.

it's completely neurotic when this happens, like she can't help it. Similar to an impulse disorder she's driven without any thought, she finds herself back in Seattle mentally and her fight or flight response kicks in.

Like a small puppy being cornered it's reactive and destructive (either to the environment or to herself)

When this happens, which is extremely rare, in this case because you suppress those urges in her mind normally, but you also bring out both the best and the worst in her, like a catalyst triggering her cognitive dissonance.

When she first did something like this, you forgave her thinking she was overwhelmed and having a flashback of sorts. The second time was a little different, since she was of sound mind and the only reason she got violent was because you were speaking to a bitch she told you not to.

You were left bleeding from your nose because you tried to defend that whore to Ellie, and she doesn't take that lightly. Textbook abusive relationship, she tells you she did it for your own good.

"This hurts me more than it hurts you baby," and "I know what's best for you, you should be listening to me."

She comforts you though, right after the assault. She does feel bad, but truly believes she's doing whats needed to be done.

You were really too sweet for this world, a naive little girl, a little bunny in a dirty and dangerous world that would prey on you. Hurt you and take you away from her. She nodded to herself about taking you, convinced she did the right thing.

After that she doesn't really give you time to ponder on it as she floods you with affection, partly because she doesn't like to see you hurting and partly because she's afraid you might leave her.

She wouldn't let you leave, though. But it's better to play safe than be sorry.

Showering you with kisses as you cry with your bottom lip quivering, face flushed and nose still bleeding. You avoid her gaze, but she gently raises your chin up to meet her eyes.

"It's okay angel, I'm here." your body was hesitant under her touch. "I'll always be here."

HEADCANONS - J.IAOQIU & LIFE AFTER H.OOLAY

because it's not just a loss of sight that he has to live with day by day-

i've been meaning to write this one up for a while, because i want to make a few things clear regarding j.iaoqiu's physical state following his encounter with h.oolay, as well as his mental and emotional state. his actions have lasting consequences for him and, whilst he certainly doesn't regret his decision, it does make things more complicated for him going forward.

BLINDNESS

now, obviously, we're all aware of this one. for now, i'm not going to make a decision regarding whether this blindness can be reversed or if it's permanent - canon may decide this, after all, and until such a time, i'm going to leave it open. however i do want to make a few things very clear regarding his eyes, namely:

his eyes are not white. they remain the same colour as they were prior to blindness. i fear pop culture has convinced many people that all blind people have white eyes, when this is in fact not true. certain conditions, infections, and diseases will alter the eye to appear cloudy gray or white, but it's not true of all blind people.

he is able to open his eyes. i saw something that said he is no longer able to open his eyes after his ordeal with h.oolay, and honestly... that is ridiculous to me. blindness does not seal your eyes shut. if people are basing this 'theory' on the fact he doesn't open his eyes when we see him post-h.oolay, then they need to rewatch the entirety of the wardance arc again, bc... this man rarely opens his eyes. it has nothing to do with him being blind.

in terms of how blind he is (bc blindness is a spectrum, like many conditions/symptoms), j.iaoqiu has complete blindness - he cannot see or detect light.

PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES

as he suffered many injuries as well as the damage done by the tumbledust, he has several lasting conditions or complications, some of which may improve over time, some which will not:

blood circulation. this is a result of the tumbledust, and though fairly minor, he does suffer with poor blood circulation - he will experience occasional bouts of numbness or weakness in his hands and feet, and he suffers cramps in his legs if he overdoes things. he is able to treat this himself, and lessens both the frequency and the severity of the symptoms.

fatigue. many factors can be attributed to this, including the damage done to his liver and kidneys. whilst this damage was largely reversed in his recovery, he still suffers from fatigue on a regular basis (though he is often too stubborn to admit it).

coagulation disorder. tumbledust is again to blame for this - he has a reduced ability to coagulate his blood, meaning his blood doesn't clot normally. in his case, this leads to excessive bleeding, easy bruising, and joint pain.

low body temperature. it's stated that when he was found, j.iaoqiu had an "abnormally low body temperature", likely as a result of the toxins in his system. whilst it is no longer abnormally low, his natural body temperature does run a little cooler than it did before, and he gets colder more quickly than he used to.

extensive scarring. h.oolay's assault upon him is forever marred upon his skin: he has deep scars upon his chest and abdomen, smaller and shallower scars upon his arms and legs, and one side of his throat is heavily scarred from where h.oolay's teeth ripped into him. though most of these scars heal normally, his throat took the longest to heal and the scars remain an angry red stain upon his skin.

chronic pain. caused by a number of things, and not localised to any one part of his body, though he does get particularly sharp twinges around his clavicle when overdoing things, despite the fracture healing cleanly. he manages this with medicines and such of his own making (he's also stubborn about this, too.)

MENTAL & EMOTIONAL CONSEQUENCES

disorientation. in the follow-up medical report, it is stated that j.iaoqiu suffered neurological atrophy - disorientation is, therefore, one of the lasting symptoms he suffers from because of it. this is more common when he is in new or unfamiliar places, though he still sometimes has episodes of disorientation even within his own home. this, paired with his blindness, has a lasting effect on his mental state.

memory problems. this is also tied to the neurological atrophy mentioned. whilst not particularly severe, j.iaoqiu does occasionally struggle with short-term memory loss. it is fairly minor, the episodes not very frequent, and doesn't greatly impact his daily life, but he may upon occasion forget what he's doing (or going to do), or have difficulty recalling a recent conversation. he tries to hide this one as best he can.

nightmares. this one is severe - or, at least, it can be. he doesn't have nightmares every night (he is sometimes spared that trauma), but they are very frequent and they can vary in their intensity. most nights, they are manageable, but some nights he wakes in pure terror, shaking and sweating, and may need to use incense or ingest a soothing remedy to calm his mind. for short periods after the worst nightmares, he even finds himself afraid to fall asleep, which leads to-

insomnia. i've placed this in the 'mental/emotional' over 'physical' because of its cause, despite the fact that both mental and physical factors can cause insomnia. he will go through periods of insomnia mainly due to his fear of the nightmares he experiences, and to avoid that particular state of vulnerability.

PTSD / depression / anxiety. i'm throwing these three all in together because they're all tied to the same cause: everything he witnessed and experienced at h.oolay's hands. in the case of his depression and anxiety, this was mainly seen in the first few months of his recovery, during the period of time where he was learning to adjust to the changes in his abilities. he treats both with his own remedies and manages them well, though his anxiety can be triggered especially during episodes of disorientation, or when he is in unfamiliar places by himself. in the case of his PTSD... that's an ongoing treatment, but he's getting there. he's identified many of his triggers and has means of either avoiding or working through them, but it's still a work in progress.

additionally, as i've also seen this commented on elsewhere and i want to make it clear: the ban on spicy food was (thankfully) only for his period of recovery. now that his wounds are healed, he can freely consume all the spice he desires.

The condition leaves you fatigued and more prone to infections and uncontrolled bleeding. Which has weakened his immune system and left him in need of a bone marrow transplant, without a bonemarrow transplant he will unfortunately have on average 5 years to live.
