It’s been a HOT minute since I watched Supernatural (I’m debating doing a re-watch) but I can’t be the only one that misses the early seasons… right? Especially seasons 1-3. I miss when it was Sam and Dean (more like Sam&Dean since they can barely function even a meter away from one another)
Don’t get me wrong, there’s loads of other characters I love (Charlie, Rowena, Crowley, Jack, Cas, BOBBY, etc.)
But nothing can beat the grungy dark lighting of the early seasons that made J2 look jaw-droppingly gorgeous, the tension, the storytelling, the fact Sam and Dean were still happy. The main point being hunting the supernatural (haha) and saving their abusive, asshole dad. Like I don’t mind angels, leviathans, them being vessels, etc etc. It just doesn’t hit the same… y’know?
I can’t be the only one.

Thinking about how we do have an example of John treating one of his sons like a normal kid instead of training him to be a hunter.
Adam.
Who almost got eaten by a ghoul then was immediately manipulated into serving as Michael’s vessel and ended up in Hell.
This is not to say that John handled things well with Dean and Sam, or that he wasn’t neglectful or (depending on your definition or interpretation of canon) abusive. Because clearly, he was.
But if the question is, was he right to obsessively prepare Dean and Sam for a world full of supernatural things that want to kill them or use them? Or was he right to be paranoid and to not want to let them stray too far? Then I think it’s worth considering the counterfactual we do have.

i love a good evil character narrative but im also very obsessed when it comes to abuse and especially in familial contexts by situations where you cannot no matter how hard you try point your finger at anyone and blame them of everything... something horrible happened and many were changed by it but nobodys actually 100% responsible for it there wasnt even an evil intention to begin with

something about john winchester mischaracterisation just needles me inexplicably. i can deal with it if a fic is good otherwise but cmon. you have to Get Him. he loves the boys and he ruins their lives like come on….. if you don’t get that he loves them then how r u even getting dean’s character considering that dean is The Same in this manner. love can be bad love doesn’t change abuse it just complicates it etc etc.
unrelatedly but also relatedly, i don’t think he’d be actually homophobic because i don’t think he has time to care. i do however think dean would be absolutely convinced he is incredibly homophobic for unknown reasons. john probably makes like an offhanded comment about something being gay once and 15 year old dean (very attracted to men. genuinely no idea whatsoever. still feels intense rush of panic at the word) decides it must mean john desperately and intensely HATES gay people and proceeds to become world’s best baby homophobe for like a year before he starts to think Maybe Sammy’s gay (sam likes to read books) and cools down on the homophobia. also his heart was never really in it. but he still thinks john is homophobic and has also decided sam’s probably gay (sam is more attracted to women than dean is) so he worries about this a lot.
then one day john says extremely casually about sam Sometimes I wonder if he’s not a little queer, you know, and dean’s heart stops and he’s like What no of course not what and john’s like If it means he doesn’t get into as much trouble with girls as you seem to, I honestly don’t mind and dean’s just like. What. but by this point it’s far too late and all fragments of homosexuality have been far buried beneath the surface by his subconscious. Also it’s important that john WOULD be kind of annoyed by dean being gay. he already thinks sam is weird and has decided to love him anyway (although i’m not sure sam got the memo about being loved anyway so the effort was useless) so it’s ok if sam is gay (privilege of being the family freak!) but dean is meant to be mini him. #picking up girls. see that journal entry. he’d get over it though.

What drew them to each other is that they were both willing to do reprehensible things.
Whether it's to save their own skins, to save their families, to carry out a plan... They're naturally fucked up in the same pragmatic way.
But they can BE their full, "flawed, petty evil creatures" in full light of the other.
///
///
DUNDUNDUN SAM WAS JUST WAITING FOR HER TO TURN AWAY WHAT A BASTARD
///
She should've gotten to KILL him at least once, I think. Just to further make their bond weirder.
///
"Don't struggle," she says.
///
ALSO.
I like to watch the unraveling futility of their ambitions. Rowena, Crowley, and Sam were all united by wanting status and ambition to help them escape "a rigged game."
"And it took everything from me, everyone I love-- my family."
///
///
BOOM. There it is.
See, Rowena sees the lengths Sam will go, and she actually RESPECTS it.
Their relationship is built on the comfort of understanding WHY they're willing to gut each other AND each other's loved ones. Strong feelings that they try to dissociate themselves from.
They use their smarts and ruthlessness to protect themselves and their loved ones at all costs.
And they both want to change.
"You were never gonna kill him. There was a time you would've. But not now."
///
There is such an--an OPENNESS about the bad things they've done, and Sam needs that in his life.
///
And in season 15, Rowena knows that Sam wouldn't have been able to kill her at the end there... not unless she guided his hand and helped him.

friend who is watching Supernatural because I won't shut up about it: I dunno, the episode "It's a Terrible Life" feels kind of empty and doesn't really make a lot of sense. Like, the message is just "ghost hunting is mad fun, bro"
me, buzzing with murder board energy: no, no, but you see... *writes hundreds of words about how this is one of THEE Dean Studies episodes, especially when paired with the season two djinn episode and endverse, and builds important parts of the angel's lore and plans, and is a meta example of the show's creators misunderstanding their own characters and stories*

Trans Sam headcannies blink blink batting eyelids (BC I don't talk abt the TRUTH enough)
Binders wouldn't have been super accessible in the 90s-00s so I imagine he used some less safe methods.
He'd bind for wayyy longer then he was ment to
If he was on a hunt he kinda didn't have many options
He'd sit on the bed finally when they got back to a motel and just breathe deep breaths for a while
His ribcage just perpetually hurt, he was used to it
He started T in college and got top surgery not long after
Dean had known about him being trans long before Sam left for college but he didn't really understand how serious Sam was about it until he came to get Sam to find his dad and 'oh my god that's a whole ass man'
Dean helped him cut his hair real short tho when they were young
John was not very impressed when that happened
John didn't know until they saw eachother post college
John didn't really get it. He was a very 'your ruining your body' type dad but honestly I think he would have had bigger problems on his mind to make a big fuss out of it (John winchester makes a big fuss out of everything so maybe more, he wouldn't make a MASSIVE fuss)
Sam was disappointed about his dad's lack of support but it was expected
Dean was very impressed by the top surgery job. Actually, considering he had never even seen one before, he was probably amazed.
Sam used to do research about what a trans person was in libraries on the computers
Most of his gender envy (/jealousy?) would have come from dean
Sam didn't really realise till he hit his pre-teen years
But he only found a name for how he felt at like 13-14
He told Dean about a year later
"I don't really understand much of what your saying, but if that's how you feel I just want to know that if that's what makes you happy.. I can get behind that, okay?" -Dean
Sam didn't cry but he gave Dean a massive hug. Emphasis on DID NOT cry those little water marks on Dean's shirt must've already been there.
Sam could only get so much from the internet so when he met another trans guy at college he was super excited and was able to learn a lot
He hated it when the showers in motels had mirrors right across from them
He'd leave the fan off intentionally so the mirror would fog up
