Catch Cub Sport, Dyan Tai & Leroy McQueen performing at St Kilda Festival
This weekend’s St Kilda Festival hosts a diverse line-up of music and entertainment. Dyan Tai shares their excitement to join the lineup.
Some of the best Aussie bands and rising music stars are performing at the St Kilda Festival this weekend.
Included in the lineup are queer gems punk-turned-country troubadour and non-binary artists Leroy McQueen.
Plus Brisbane’s Cub Spot and the Gaysian Empress of Sydney Dyan Tai.
Performing on Sunday, Cub Sport was one of the first artists announced in the musical festival lineup.
They are one of Australia’s most significant pop exports and the country’s most successful self-managed and self-released band.
“We’re proud to be bringing back the St Kilda Festival once more,” City of Port Phillip Mayor, Louise Crawford said,
“This two-day celebration of Australian live music will showcase everything from the biggest names in Australian music,
“To family-friendly activities and entertainment for the whole community.”
Just up the road, the Victorian Pride Center is even hosting a dedicated space for rest and rejuvenation in a quiet environment.
Open to all, this low-sensory space is available for anyone needing a break from the festival atmosphere.
While Cub Sport take over the Main Stage on Sunday, there’s plenty of action on the New Music Stage that day as well.
Highlighting emerging artists, Leroy McQueen and Dyan Tai will be performing as part of a competition to perform at one of the key stages in 2026.

New Music Stag packed with talent
Hundreds of artists applied to perform on the St Kilda Festival New Music Stage, with ten making the final cut.
The artist’s sets are voted on, and the winner gets a spot on a key stage at St Kilda Fest 2026 and $5,000 cash.
Something trilingual, Malaysian-born, Chinese-Australian musician, performance artist and DJ Dyan Tai is very excited about.
“Oh my god, I still can’t believe I got selected!” Tai said,
“Everyone who got picked to perform on the New Music Stage is so incredibly talented.
“I always get really nervous before I perform so I’m going to have to remind myself to try to take it all in and enjoy the moment.”
Known for performing unique and high-energy live sets, Tai knows how to entertain.
“Being a multidisciplinary artist who has a background in performance art and cabaret makes me really particular about my live shows,”
“Which is annoying because sometimes I just make things more complicated for myself.” he laughed,
“My music and live shows have always been high energy, fun and super queer.
“I feel really grateful that St Kilda Festival is trusting me to bring all of that to the festival.
“My live sets have evolved over time and they are never the same,
“So what you’ll hear this Sunday is a product of months, even years of practice.
“Oh, and if you think that’s a long time, my hair and makeup always take two to three hours before the show.
“So a lot goes into a performance, but my audience deserves the best and they will always get my 100%.”
Tai brings diverse representation both musically, and culturally and as an entertainer.
One of the numbers Tai is bound to bring to the New Music stage is his latest banger Let’s Get Bubble Tea.

Music that’s opening doors and pushing boundaries
“I make electronic music with hyper pop elements and Beijing opera/Asian soundscapes;”
“My aesthetic is kind of a combination of Chinese opera, gyaru/decora subcultures and clown makeup.
“To be honest, I sometimes wonder if that’s too much for the music industry.
“Perhaps some people don’t get it or might be afraid.
“But those who do get it and are giving people like me opportunities, are opening doors for not just me but all the misfits.
“For the artists making weird art. Marginalised folks.
“The queers, BIPOC and all the producers pushing the boundaries of genres.
“Those who don’t fit in because they are making music that is authentic to themselves.
“That excites me and I think that’s what we need more in the music scene here in Australia.”
St Kilda Festival is just one of the many opportunities you can catch Tai’s diverse work.
“You can catch the documentary, “Empress” made about my music and the queer Asian movement that I started in Sydney.”
“The team (Chhayly, Lucien, Sarah and I) are so proud to get a world premiere at Queer Screen (aka Mardi Gras Film Festival).”
The documentary will make its world premiere as part of the QueerDoc shorts on Tuesday 25th February – find out more here.
“Also, I will be releasing an EP this year which features some of the best queer artists in Australia.”
“I can’t wait for you all to hear it!
Catch Dyan Tao performing at the New Music Stage on Sunday at the St Kilda Festival, and don’t forget to vote.

"you're a good lad" "im not actually, either". that one shopkeeper and his non binary spouse, played by a non binary actor. beelzebub and gabriel. shax, nina and maggie all thinking azi and crowley were together. also yes i'm gonna mention: crowley and aziraphale's kiss. it's just, i get that everyone's hurt and so am i but can we please focus on how beautiful this season was to us? we got so much and i'm so happy, despite the ending.

WICKED REVIEW
Not gonna spoil anything, but for the people who have queer readings of Wicked (and really, what other reading is there?) and, like me, were worried on how the film would approach that , I just wanna assure you:
1. Ariana 100000% played Galinda like a lesbian with comphet. Even I — someone who never doubted her capability for this role, but was worried about how the lesbian interpretation I have of her character would translate — was surprised at how very clearly queer-coded her she was. So much to the point where I’d argue popular is the gayest song on here. It had to be a conscious acting choice.
2. Which means… for those who were worried that they’d try to erase/squander any queer readings of Wicked, they absolutely did not. Gelphie is as alive and canon as ever. Like they definitely played into the “love story between two girls…” aspect of this, nothing here was sacrificed, if anything they added some more stuff to validate our points.
GELPHIE NATION WOOOONNNN.

Watch Trevor Ashley shine in Fanny Scat Investigates

Watch Trevor Ashley shine in Fanny Scat Investigates
Tumblr media
Home grown queer comedy web series Fanny Scat Investigates, starring Trevor Ashley and Drag Race Down Under’s Hollywould Star, is now available to watch on YouTube and TikTok from today.
The Queer Screen Completion Fund recipient premiered in Sydney at 2023’s Queer Screen Film Fest and features Ashley as Fanny Scat, a washed out drag queen who turns detective after a bumbag thief threatens her only source of income – an Oxford Street talent show!
Director Tony Radevski describes the series as “Crocodile Dundee meets Priscilla meets a John Waters masterpiece gone delightfully wrong.”
“It’s super camp and super funny! We had lots of help from queer venues and landmarks in Sydney, so are excited to showcase Fanny!” he says.
The series was filmed at venues including The Flinders Hotel, Stonewall and The Colombian and also stars legendary Sydney showgirl Monique Kelly from the original cast of Les Girls.
Since 2023 Fanny Scat has been doing the rounds of international film festivals, screening at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, winning Best Web Series at the Seattle Queer Film Festival, and was the third highest awarded digital series at last year’s Web Series World Cup.
Radevski previously co-created the animated comedy web series Bogan Moths which was also a festival favourite, picking up wins at LA Web Fest, Made In The West Film Festival, Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, and Stareable Fest.
Ashley is currently appearing in The Producers at London’s West End Theatre but is heading back to Sydney in March to star in Moulin Scrooge! An Adults Only Panto.
Fanny Scat Investigates was originally produced as a 42 minute tv pilot but has been reedited into eight bingeable episodes with some new footage added.
Check out all episodes on Youtube at www.youtube.com/@FannyScat/videos or watch the trailer below.

Mix Sahaphap gets to perform (and has the performance chops to perform) in a style that I’ve never seen any other male actor get to embody. Mix gets to unironically play the #strongfemalecharacter. The Beatrice, the Elizabeth Bennett, the Jo March. Strong-willed, emotional, kind-hearted.
Not only do the plot points line up, but Mix, more than any BL actor I’ve seen, fully leans into the embodiment of this archetype. In his roles, he rolls his eyes, pouts, banters flirtatiously, softens his posture and expression at small details. He doesn’t over-exaggerate and imposition other characters but his face also doesn’t hold back his character’s thoughts and judgments. And when the moments arrive, he lets all the hurt and anguish pour out in shatters of tears and visible heartbreak—the star-counting scene, anyone????—in a way that harkens to the operatic emotionality of well-done melodramas, soap-operas, and their contemporary Thai equivalent of Lakorn. It’s only that these have never been men’s roles in those.
Tumblr media
It’s no surprise that one of Mix’s roles—Cupid’s Last Wish—is explicitly a gender body-swap, and Tian in A Tale of Thousand Stars is (albeit explicitly denied within the show) heavily connected to gender body-swapping. What Mix specializes in as an actor, and does exceptionally well, has been defined as feminine. To depict a kind of queer expression in this style is novel because it’s not camp, it’s not okama, it’s not a soft or femboy, it’s not a BL twink (Mix has been mostly excluded from the schoolyards and quads of the BL universe except for a role as a senior crush in Fish Upon the Sky). It’s too sincere and too adult for any of that.
Tumblr media
In Moonlight Chicken we get to see, without the pretense of gendered mysticism, this performance style’s seduction, warmth, wit, and explosiveness within the framework of a general gay form of expression. It says that this kind of femininity might just be a gay thing. Not all gay men exhibit it, obviously—queer men aren’t a monolith. Still, it gives us something to consider about how we observe performance of queerness on screen, especially in front of an audience that puts so much more emphasis on ships, heat, and pairing chemistry to assess how well they perform a BL role. Could we look for other features to judge performance of queerness instead of how well they kiss?
Seme and uke roles would be the major performance style categories loyal BL fans assess actors with, yet even within the archetype his character’s fill within BL narratives, Mix’s performances differ from the typical uke depiction in BL because he really doesn’t perform them as passive. Rather, Mix’s characters and his portrayal of them are dynamic and demanding. It certainly fits certain stereotypes of ukes (Gilbert!) and their gay stereotype equivalent of bottoms as pillow princesses and brats. Mix’s characters, though, have more drive, agency, and compassion than that, and he plays them with all of those currents running underneath.
Tumblr media
We certainly have openly gay writer/director Aof Noppharnach to thank for writing this kind of queer character for Mix to play in Tian and Wen. But for Mix’s specific commitment to the performance starting off with his (debut!?) role in ATOTS, we first have Earth to thank for believing in Mix’s ability and recommending him to portray the role of Tian, and then Aof’s acceptance despite his differing initial expectations for the character. Mix, Earth, and Aof have all been open about how Mix in his personal life and nature holds a lot of similarities to both his role as Tian in ATOTS and Wen in Moonlight Chicken. Some people might knock points off his performances because he’s like them. But his relationship to the characters, rather than dampening my enthusiasm for Mix’s performances, helps me appreciate his willingness to give an authentic performance in a style that hasn’t been encouraged on screens previously. It’s made more impactful that he chose to risk vulnerability to bring something personal that had previously been excluded from screens because of its gender deviance (and in broader society explicitly condemned). This doesn’t make a claim on Mix’s actual identity, but simply shows his willingness to understand and perform the expressions of his queer characters with an effort at empathy that many other actors would feel challenged to bring.
Some actors are chameleons, but some actors have a gift of a type within which they can explore depths and range that no one else can best. For me, that’s what Mix does in his work when directors and casting understands his talent. There’s a BTS video of Mix actually fainting during a scene while in Earth/Phupa’s embrace on the mountain that immediately brought to mind the wildly famous final scene in the film Camille where Greta Garbo as Marguerite dies in her lover’s arms.
Tumblr media
For Mix, it was a serious incident due to regrettably extreme conditions and requiring the on-set paramedics, but these levels of theatrics, for me, are emblematic of what Mix is capable of as a performer, as well. After all, he had to faint in Phupa’s arms multiple times on purpose. It’s the kinds of Old Hollywood and heightened sentimental romance realms Mix takes his performances to! Then he can turn around and make it look easy to take that same character into grounded quips or dedicated everyday tasks. It only takes writers, directors, and audiences willing to see that men can feel this way and act this way. Mix has paved the way.

The disproportionate hate towards Tommy Kinard and the refusal to accept that someone could have genuine, meaningful character development off-screen that is still valid and real is a symptom of cancel culture and the internet’s general refusal to allow a person to become more than their past failings but some of y'all aren't ready to hear that
