Greys Anatomy AU-- Lillian at Seattle Grace Pt 2
As Lillian's guest stint at Seattle Grace continues, Lena does her best to avoid her mother in both the halls and the operating room, and limiting their inevitable exchanges to relaying patient information.
To her surprise, though the other interns continue to bully her, the residents actually rally behind Lena. Meredith, of course, understands the pain of an inattentive mother, and once she gets behind Lena, the others do as well. They remain courteous to Lillian, perfectly professional, but never engage beyond that.
Lena keeps increasingly to herself, rarely seeking comfort from Lexie and the residents, and never doing so at work. Still, Lexie keeps an eye on her, especially when Lillian corners Lena at the nurses station, while Lena and Lexie are updating their patients' charts.
Lena makes no move to greet her mother, not even lifting her gaze as the taller woman starts making notes in her own charts. The nurses all stare surreptitiously, but Lexie thinks she might be the only one to see the stiffness of Lena's posture.
"You'll be glad to know your brother is doing well," Lillian delivers succinctly as she scribbles notes with an elegant hand. "He's even taken over your father's role in the company. Not that you've bothered to ask."
Lena closes her chart with a snap sharp enough to make Lexie and the nurses jump. Without looking at her mother, she grinds out a terse "I have rounds" through a clenched jaw before turning on her heel and stalking away.
As the days pass, and Lena's tension and anxiety around her mother starts to build, she starts sharing more with Lexie. About her family. How her father had been a raging alcholic, and how her mother had always been brilliant, had always put her career first, and her son second. How Lena had always seemed to fall off her list of priorities.
Lena never truly blamed her, she tells Lexie one night. When her older brother was diagnosed with cancer, it made sense that Lillian's attention would be focused on Lex. She practically lived with Lex at the hospital, leaving Lena to be raised by nannies and other staff. Even when he was home, Lex's condition seemed to consume everything.
There isn't a single happy memory Lena has that isn't punctuated by Lex and his health. Piano recital? Lex's first seizure. Honor roll ceremony? Lex collapsed halfway through congratulating her, resulting in an ambulance ride to the hospital while the driver took Lena home alone.
Even when his cancer went into remission, something else always seemed to pop up in it's place. Lena can't remember a single time Lex has been healthy and pain-free. But even as she says it, a darkness creeps into Lena's voice, the tone of a secret.
"What is it?" Lexie asks.
"On my fifteenth birthday, we had dinner together, as a family. By that point, it was rare for us all to be in the same room, and I was so, so happy. No one was angry, or worried. Everything seemed like it would be all right for once."
Lexie takes Lena's hand, giving it a squeeze. "But..."
"But," Lena confirms, "right as I was about to open my first present, Lex had another seizure. It-- it was a bad one. He fell out of his chair, and hit his head on the way down."
"Oh, Lena...."
"That's not-- that was normal, by then," Lena explains with a shake of her head. "We all knew what to do. When it was over, I was holding Lex's hand while our mother called the hospital, and he..."
Lena trails off, her gaze unfocused, lost in memory. Lexie waits, letting Lena set the pace.
"He smirked at me."
Lexie blinks. "What?"
"He smirked at me," Lena repeats, so quietly it's almost a whisper. "He was usually groggy after a seizure, but before Mother returned, he looked me dead in the eye, and smirked like he had won something."
Lexie watches Lena carefully. Only one thing comes to her mind at this revelation, but she hesitates to voice it out loud. Munchausen.
"I know what you're thinking," Lena says quietly. "And the answer is, I don't know. All I know is that on that day, in that moment, Lex faked that seizure."
"Did you... talk to your mother about it?"
At that, Lena frowns, her gaze darkening. When she nods, the movement doesn't quite hide the quiver of her chin.
"She, uh..." Lena looks down into her coffee cup. "She smacked me, accused me of being selfish, and cruel for even thinking such a thing, and then just... went back to Lex's hospital room."
Lexie leans into Lena's side, offering comfort without interrupting.
"I didn't see her again until my dad's funeral three weeks later. I don't remember much about that day, but... I don't think she looked at me even once."
"So when she missed your white coat ceremony..."
"I didn't need to ask what happened," Lena confirms. "Real or faked, Lex had some sort of episode, and she stayed with him. Just like she always did."
When Lena takes a deep breath, Lexie can hear the heartache and exhaustion.
"I don't know why she's here," Lena whispers. "All I know is that if she stays... I can't."

These Are the Days
Abby Anderson x Fem!Reader
High school AU
Prologue
For the summary, warnings, and more please visit here
Thank you @saradika for the divider!
U-Haul's don’t allow for much space. The driver's seat and the passenger's seat allow for a normal sized human to sit in while the middle seat is reserved for children. The problem is that you are no longer a child.
Your parents don’t seem to mind the less than spacious conditions as your father drives and your mother looks out of her window. The sound of two people babbling about some senator comes from the radio. Even though they put it on, your parents are not listening to it. Your hand goes to change the station to something you like. They don’t flinch at the change. They just continue on with what they’re doing.
Squished in between your mother and father, you pull up to your new house. It’s a beautiful and luxurious colonial-style home in Bellevue, Washington. Just minutes away from Seattle, the Emerald City.
It looks like something straight out of a fairytale. The beautiful L-shaped home is surrounded by trees, bushes, flowers, rocks, and grass. Curved steps take you up to the porch surrounded by brick walls. Gabled roof lights emerge from the slate roof. And just around the corner is another walkway that leads to a curved white arbor and an expansive backyard.
No matter how beautiful this house is, you still crave your home. It was small, yes, but it was home.
Washington was so different from California. You’ve only been here for a few hours but you could already tell. You missed the air that smelled like sand and saltwater. How sticky your skin felt when you were outside too long. The constant sound of dogs barking. The breeze that shook the curtains. Watching the sunset from the window of your old bedroom. California was home. This place, no matter how hard it tried, could never do what California did.
As your parents and the movers loaded things up in the house, you took your bike and began to peddle. With music playing in your ears, you rode your bike fast and hard, trying your best to get away.
All you could see was green. Green grass, green trees, green bushes, even some flowers were green. Something about it made you sick.
Further down the neighborhood, things were clearing up. You could see the same houses multiple times in a row. The only thing different about them being the cars that were parked in the front. The only things that followed were a dog park made especially for small dogs, and a small bakery at the very end of the street.
You were alone on the street. Not a single person passed by. Not a jogger, a car, or a pedestrian. It felt as if everyone was in their homes watching you peddle your way through their neighborhood.
After hours of riding your bike, you drag it back home. Your legs are tired but you can always appreciate the art of walking.
The U-Haul is parked neatly in the driveway and the door is unlocked, meaning that your parents remembered you existed for once. Their new cars, which were delivered just before the three of you arrived in Washington are gone which means one thing; they’ve gone to work.
Like always, there’s a note on the kitchen island.
We’ve gone to work. We put your things in the first bedroom to the left. The movers already set up your bed and bedframe.
Sincerely,
Mom and Dad.
The professionalism of the note just encapsulates your relationship with your parents. One drunken night after they met, they slipped up and had you. The three of you know you’re a mistake but it’s never been mentioned. They’ve never said “I love you,” and they’ve never shown up to a school play or performance. They missed out on your kindergarten graduation because they had a work party they “needed” to attend. Their neglect hurt at first and then you got used to it. You stopped looking for them in crowds, stopped asking them to come to events, and stopped telling your teachers the real reason why your parents never picked you up on time.
Your bedroom is spacious even with the bed in the middle of it. Your things are unpacked in no time and it almost looks like your room back in California. Almost.
Your parents were generous enough to give you a room with a window that overlooks the front of the house. You like sitting by the window while people pass by, just watching as they go on with their lives. You assign each person walking by with a little backstory. Something brighter and happier than what you’re living with right now. It makes you feel less alone.
You stand by your curtainless window waiting for someone - anyone to walk by. And just like when you were riding your bike, no one passed by. That is until you hear the sound of a truck approaching. The sound of the latest pop hit escapes through the rolled down windows. A boy in a blue and gold varsity jacket is driving while a girl with striking blonde hair looks out of her window. The two of you hold eye contact for just a second before she and the car are out of sight.

Quincy Jones
Musician, producer and arranger who had global hits with Michael Jackson, was the first black composer to find acceptance in Hollywood and won 28 Grammys
From the 1980s onwards, Quincy Jones, who has died aged 91, was best known for his production and arranging work with Michael Jackson, not least because his efforts on Jackson’s album Thriller helped make it one of the bestselling albums in pop history. But the superstar glare surrounding his work with Jackson tended to conceal the fact that there were many more layers to Jones’s abilities.
He worked with jazz stars such as Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie, became a friend and collaborator of Frank Sinatra, and developed a flourishing career as a composer of soundtracks for film and TV. He enjoyed success under his own name in styles ranging from big-band jazz and swing to pop, soul and funk. He became an influential music business executive, a successful entrepreneur in film and TV production and launched the music magazine VIBE.
He was born in Chicago, the son of Quincy Jones Sr, a carpenter and semi-pro baseball player, and his wife, Sarah (nee Wells), a building manager. His parents divorced, Quincy Sr remarried, and the family moved to Bremerton, Washington, during the second world war, then to Seattle. Quincy Jr began playing the trumpet and singing in a gospel quartet at the age of 12, and when he met up with the teenaged Ray Charles, also based in the Seattle area, Charles encouraged him to take an interest in arranging. A course at the Berklee College of Music in Boston set Jones up for his first professional job, in 1951, with the bandleader Lionel Hampton.
His experiences on the road with the Hampton band were an eye-opener. “You couldn’t stay in white hotels, and to me, coming from Seattle, a lot of this stuff was like a slap in the face,” he said. “Back then, all the black bands had white bus drivers so they could eat, ’cos you couldn’t go into white restaurants. Even in Philadelphia, they had segregated hotels.” Jones left Hampton in 1953, having accompanied the band on a European tour and rubbed shoulders with a remarkable lineup of musicians including the trumpeters Clifford Brown and Art Farmer.
He set about making a living writing arrangements for jazz luminaries including Basie and Tommy Dorsey. Although Jones put in a stint as musical director for Gillespie’s ensemble in 1956, he was aware that the days of the big bands were numbered, and rock’n’roll was coming. “In a funny way, Lionel Hampton was one of the bands that was serious with a rock’n’roll sensibility, before we even knew what the word meant,” Jones said.
During 1957 and 1958, Jones based himself in France and Scandinavia. He continued to study composition – notably with Nadia Boulanger, mentor of Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, among others – and took a job with Barclay Disques, the Paris-based subsidiary of Mercury Records. While in Europe he formed a star-studded big band of his own, and spent two years touring Europe and the US. He wrote material for Count Basie, and during the late 1950s and early 60s worked as an arranger and music director on recording sessions for vocalists including Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan.

In 1964, Jones won his first Grammy award, for his arrangement of Basie’s song I Can’t Stop Loving You. He also produced four million-selling singles for Lesley Gore, including the US chart-topper and UK Top 10 hit It’s My Party (1963). His hectic career was matched by an equally eventful private life. In his memoir Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones (2001), he described how at one point he was dating five women at the same time.
His burgeoning profile was boosted by collaborations with Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and Andy Williams. Jones’s association with Sinatra produced the albums It Might As Well Be Swing (1964) and Sinatra at the Sands (1966), both featuring Basie’s band. Jones and Sinatra became close friends, Jones later writing that Sinatra was “hip, straight up and straight ahead, and above all, a monster musician”.
Jones’s track record gained him entry into the lucrative fields of film and television, and he became the first black composer to find acceptance within Hollywood. Throughout the late 60s and 70s he was commissioned to write scores for more than 30 movies and hundreds of TV shows. Among his better-known film projects are In Cold Blood (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Italian Job (1969) and The Getaway (1972). The theme from Ironside is his most instantly recognisable effort for the small screen, but his compositions for The Bill Cosby Show, Sanford and Son and his Emmy-winning work for the miniseries Roots proved enduringly popular.
As the 70s wore on, Jones displayed his instinct for moving with prevailing musical trends by immersing himself in funk and disco music. His album Body Heat, from 1974, featured the Brothers Johnson as the rhythm section, and Jones subsequently produced bestselling albums by the Brothers Johnson themselves.
Despite undergoing surgery to deal with twin brain aneurysms in 1974, Jones continued to work at a furious pace. He produced chart-busting albums for the disco queen Donna Summer and soul diva Aretha Franklin, and he found another musical soulmate in the guitarist George Benson. Their collaboration on Give Me the Night (1980) – the debut release on Jones’s Qwest label – was another career benchmark, the album reaching No 3 on the US album chart while the title track was a No 4 single.
Meanwhile Jones had hits under his own name. He had a US Top 30 success with Stuff Like That (1978), and in 1981 scored a Top 10 album with The Dude, which spun off the Top 30 hit Ai No Corrida (No 4 in the UK), and the Top 20 hits Just Once and One Hundred Ways, both featuring James Ingram. In 1998, the hit movie Austin Powers prompted a revival of Quincy’s 1962 hip-shaker, Soul Bossa Nova; it was also used as a theme for the 1998 football World Cup in France.
Jones first met Michael Jackson, then aged 12, at Davis Jr’s house, but it was not until Jones was working on the soundtrack for the film The Wiz (1978), starring Jackson and Diana Ross, that he was invited to produce a Jackson solo album. This was the 20m-selling Off the Wall (1979). Their collaboration continued with Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987), the trio selling 100m copies between them. In between, Jones was also the natural choice to produce the 1985 charity single, We Are the World, co-written by Jackson and Lionel Richie and performed by the all-star USA For Africa to benefit Ethiopian famine victims.

Jones was a pivotal figure in helping musicians take control of the business side of their work. Like most other musicians, he had grown accustomed in the early years of his career to having his royalties and copyrights appropriated by unscrupulous publishers or record labels. “If you write a song, the publishing is 50% of that,” Jones explained. “They would say: ‘I want 50% of your creation’, so that means you get 25%. That was normal.” He began to see the light when he took a job as A&R man at Mercury Records in New York in 1961. Within two years, he was made a vice-president, making him the first high-level black executive of a major record label. “I’d lost so much money when I had my band [the Jones Boys] in Europe that I had to go with a record company. That’s when I said: ‘I’d better pay attention to the other side, because it is a music business.’”
After moving from Mercury to A&M Records he launched Qwest, which became home to such varied artists as New Order, Milt Jackson, the Winans and Tevin Campbell. Qwest also did excellent business with the soundtracks to Malcolm X (1992) and the rap-generation movie Boyz N the Hood (1991).
Growing into the role of entertainment mogul, Jones co-produced Steven Spielberg’s film of The Color Purple in 1985 and produced its soundtrack. In 1990 he teamed up with Time Warner Inc to form Quincy Jones Entertainment; in 1991 he helped create the NBC television series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which launched Will Smith on the road to superstardom; and in 1993 he set up VIBE. He headed a consortium of businessmen that formed Qwest Broadcasting, which purchased TV stations in Atlanta and New Orleans.
Jones won an Emmy, 28 Grammys and three Special Grammy awards, including the Grammy Legend award in 1992, was given the Sammy Cahn lifetime achievement award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1989, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. He was showered with honorary doctorates, Time magazine declared him one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century, and in 1990 he was made a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, promoted to commander in 2001.
He was celebrated in the film Listen Up: The Lives of Quincy Jones (1990) and the documentary Quincy (2018), directed by his daughter Rashida.
Three marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by a daughter, Jolie, from the first, to Jeri Caldwell; a daughter, Martina, and son, Quincy, from the second, to Ulla Andersson; two daughters, Rashida and Kikada, from the third, to Peggy Lipton; and by a daughter, Kenya, from a relationship with Nastassja Kinski, and a daughter, Rachel, with Carol Reynolds.

A little headcannon tidbit based off of chapter 2 of @canarydarity 's ranchers baseball au <3
-----
St. Louis felt infinitely like home. Or, as close to home as Jimmy could get. Coming into the city from the Illinois side of the river made him sick to smell the air of his childhood backyard. To taste the dirt in his mouth as he, once again, lost against Grian at the diamonds. St. Louis was 10 times smaller than grand old New York, New York, but it was 10 times more welcoming. The drivers were calmer, the streets less full, the culture more laid back. It was a lazy city, sticky and slow like molasses in the early summer midwestern heat.
As the team bus rattled its way across the Eads Bridge, Jimmy felt Joel smack his arm, breaking his gaze away from the lazy flow of the Mississippi. “What in the bloody hell are they building?” Joel muttered, half standing to see over Tango’s shoulders across the isle. Tango looked as if he was about to burst out of the window, he was pressed so hard to the glass. He swiveled his head to look at Jimmy and Joel.
“You two haven’t heard? It’s been in every paper for weeks!” He was practically vibrating with excitement.
Jimmy shook his head and stood up taller to see what the fuss was about. By then, the whole team was ‘ooh and ahhing’ at the absolutely massive structure being built, right on the banks of the river.
“It’s going to be called the Gateway Arch. It’s probably going to be the biggest feat of engineering since the Empire State. Probably better than the Needle out in Seattle is going to be.” Jimmy raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile on his lips. Since when did Tango have a special interest in engineering?
“I did a few months in an engineering class. Got me hooked, but numbers are easier to understand.” Tango explained, as if he had read Jimmy’s mind. Then he turned back around and continued to peer at the stories-tall cranes slowly moving into place, and the two wide, square beginnings of what would apparently become a feat of engineering. Jimmy didn’t really see the draw, but he leaned across Joel and the isle to Tango anyways.
“We should come back to see it once it’s finished.” Jimmy said, watching the construction site fade behind them. The Cardnial’s stadium appeared behind the looming Old Courthouse.
“I agree!” Tango replied, beaming. Jimmy didn’t care if he was 100 by the time the Arch was finished. He’d come back and see it with Tango when it was done.
------
hi worm i know you're reading this,,,ok I haven't had the energy (or time) to do any art for the baseball au but the brainrot has been stuck with me for DAYS. so I decided to write a little tidbit of how I imagined the ride into St. Louis for that game against the Cardnials. I have a lot of love for the city I grew up around so I really wanted to do something for it for you :) And if you're interested, here's some of the history I incorparated to make it feel more historically accurate! (i'm a cloested history buff, can you tell)
the st louis gateway arch began construction in 1963 technically, but I'm like 90% sure that there was soo much prep work done on the site before the actual construction, as there is a basement underneath it, and a huge walkway/viewing platform area, as well as the whole thing with the levee right on the Mississippi. I wanted to sort of figure out what that would look like in 1961 when the plans were being laid out. Also, the Arch is a certified national park, it's professional name being "St. Louis Gateway Arch National Park"
The Old Courthouse. UGH its one of my favorite buildings I've ever seen actually. Its so beautiful, and you can, from the road I'm writing them on, see Busch staduim looming behind it. The Courthouse also actually held the first two trials of the Dred Scott case, if you're into that kind of stuff.
The Eads Bridge. Also one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. It is the oldest bridge on the Mississippi and was constructed under the care of Andrew Carnagie. That bad boy is made out of actual authentic Carnagie steel. Sooo history rich. Pretty sure they actually held a parade with elephants once it was done. so that's cool
Oh, and Busch stadium. It wasn't called that way back when! And it looked much, much different than it does now. I'm honestly not sure what it was called in the 60's, but I'm sure most people called it Cardnial's stadium. It was a beautiful and massive stadium back then, and it still is now.
the seattle neetle was being constructed around the same time as the arch as well, which is why i had Tango say something about it LOL
And for funsies, here's a scorecard that I'm sure Tango would've recieved in 1961 from the stadium.
hope you enjoyed my little rant!! And if you made it to the bottom of this and you're not worm, I hope you enjoyed learning a little about st. louis today. :)
#tangotek#jimmy solidarity#rancher duo#team rancher#cloudy speaks too much#against all odds#baseball au#this is what i did instead of my final math project#this au is not mine!!#but you should go read against all odds guys#pls#trafficshipping

Linzy's birthday, if I'm not careful, can sound an awful lot like Mother's Day.
If the connection's not obvious to you it's because both celebrations describe the same event of which I have plenty of memories. It is, after all, the story of Kimmer 'n I.
And Linzy, too, of course.
See what I mean, though? We've got a story.
She's got a story.
Our memories, though, are just so super accessible to us when the subject is Linzy.
To combat that parental bias this year, I'm gonna focus on the young woman Linzy's become. Not where we all started but where she is now.
Now?
Yeah. As in she's a young adult with a career and a life of her own. Of course by this point in her life those things were always gonna be true. The surprise is that I had no idea how impressive that career and that life would be, has been, is in the process of becoming even more.
Recently, the online magazine, Canvas Rebel, an organization that spotlights conversations with entrepreneurs, artists & creatives, reached out to Linzy for an interview they recently posted on their site.
In the interview, Linzy reveals herself as someone who feels confident, passionate, and driven about the life she's pursuing. She acknowledges the rarity of that pursuit, that certainty, from school ages that aren't usually characterized by such confidence.
"By the time I graduated high school, I was the ultimate American choir-band-theater nerd; I’d written enough songs to fill a few albums, learned clarinet and trombone and played both in my high school’s pep band, performed in several talent shows and choir concerts, eventually learned to read music and knew how to be a front-woman for a band."
She talks about being a big fish in a small pond through her school years then facing the harsh reality of joining the best of the best at a college where being the best in high school makes you normal. Makes you not stand out.
"It humbled me, and [I] started taking the advice of my mentors to let myself be intimidated by talented people but then actually get to know them too so I can continue to grow alongside them. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing ever since."
Entering the local music industry, it became clear to her that hard work and talent are not enough to launch a career in music. Community is key. Her professional Network with a capital "N" is essential to how far she's come.
2019, she's working part-time at the Royal Room in the Columbia City neighborhood of Seattle where she meets Robbie Christmas with whom she becomes a friend and collaborator. Within weeks of that first meeting, Robbie introduces her to the world of live winery performances. Ultimately, throughout their friendship, he's the one who ushers her into Seattle's music community.
During her sophomore year of art school, she meets Andrew Vait, a guest speaker talking about songwriting, production, and artist branding. During her senior year, Andrew invites her to train and work as his production assistant. He subsequently invites her to be a founding member of the Fleetwood Mac tribute band, The Little Lies, an experience that serves as a nitrous boost to her skills as a musician, vocalist, and performer. The experience also broadens her recognition within the local community of musicians, club owners, and all the tech professionals who are responsible for maintaining high standards of sound and lights.
The Little Lies also brought Linzy into the orbit of Nik Singleton who, at the end of 2022, invites Linzy into her new band, Midnight High, a six-person group of musicians that indulges "a gorgeous blend of nostalgic synth-pop reminiscent of the 80’s, while simultaneously being dark and futuristic."
More nitrous to Linzy's skills. More reach into the local community that eventually opens the door for the debut of her own brand, Dream Patrol.
"Dream Patrol is where I get to fully take a turn in the driver’s seat and explore my love for electronic pop production, and is targeted toward audiences that wanna have fun dancing and partying with me. Dream Patrol is also where I push myself to not hide behind my instruments, as I so often tend to do, and allow myself to take up space on stage solely as a singer and performer."
This year, her performances along with her work teaching vocalists, conspired to transform her professional life into full-time pursuit, 100% of her income generated by revenue streams from her work as a professional performer and a vocal instructor.
Her career is definitely, profoundly, firing on all thrusters.
"My ongoing collaborations with The Little Lies and Midnight High have not only given me several chances to engage with the music community in Seattle on several occasions, to the point where I’m now a recognizable player in the scene, but its also lead people to find my Linzy Collins and Dream Patrol projects that they might not have found without seeing me play with one of my bands."
So there it is. There she is. It's her birthday today. And when I say we're proud or impressed as hell with this human being she grew up to be, you maybe, maybe, maybe now you have the smallest taste of what I mean by that.
What you can't know, what only her mother 'n I do know, is how hard she worked, the challenges she faced, the setbacks, the roadblocks with which she grappled, the opportunities she embraced, how she grew into her Muchness hour after hour after day after day across months and then years. We are fans numbers One and Two. We were there from the beginning. From her first instrument. From her first written song. From her first performance in front of a live audience showing that audience her own compositions, sharing with them herself. We were there. We are there. We're gonna be there as this story continues and continues and continues to unfold. Because hand to God.
This is really, seriously getting good.
😍😍😍
