Orange Cat AKA Sunshine Update
After he crawled into my lap a few weeks back I had a moment where I was sure he was ready to be picked up. Hoisted him up onto my lap while I was sitting in a chair and he was totally fine.
He’s a lap cat now and he CANNOT GET ENOUGH pets and affection. 🥹
Yesterday we began Adventures in Brushing & Grooming.
Here is a big orange tuft as well as video of Mr. Baby Man discovering his own face on camera:
#i will take any advice on grooming a longhaired cat#he has some huge established mats where his chest meets his underside#i don’t know what i’m doing & his behavior isn’t predictable enough to feel comfortable coming that close to his whiskers with clippers#he’s still not in a place where i could bring a professional groomer to him#am hoping i can just pick the mats out slowly over time with the flea & tick comb?#street cat saga continues#cats#orange cat#sunshine#long haired cats

Information to know about your pet… before you visit the vet:
- What kind of food does your pet eat? Include the brand name and flavor, as well as the amount fed and how often they eat. Remember that “one scoop” doesn’t mean much, so be sure to quantify it in cups, etc. before your next visit. Don’t forget to mention treats, or any recent diet changes!
- What medications, if any, does your pet take? Please know the drug name, dosage, and frequency, as well as how long they’ve been on it. Preventatives count as meds too! Different brands protect against different parasites, so be sure to know which your pet takes.
- Is your pet ever exposed to other animals? This includes animals in the home, at the dog park, groomers, daycare, boarding, and play dates with neighbors or friends. When was their most recent exposure?
- Is your pet up to date on vaccines? Which ones? Just the core vaccines (rabies and DHPP for dogs/FVRCP for cats), or non-core such as lepto, influenza, Bordetella, and/or feline leukemia as well? If not up to date, did they ever receive any vaccines in the past, and when?
- Does your pet have any relevant medical history? Please disclose any previous illnesses or surgeries you are aware of to your vet team.
- What is your pet’s spay/neuter status? Different reproductive diseases affect intact and altered animals. If you’re unsure, just let us know!
- Has your pet traveled recently? This includes everything from trips out of the country to a day drive across town for a swim at the lake. Certain toxins and diseases are more prevalent in different environments.
- Is your pet nervous or aggressive? There’s no shame in this! Please let us know for our safety and your pet’s.
Remember that not all vet visits are planned, so be sure to learn this information ahead of time. I hope this helps better equip you to advocate for your pet!
Fellow vet professionals, feel free to add on!

So is there new wisdom out now about trimming a cat's being bad? Are people confusing it with declawing?
#I understand maybe having it done by a professional groomer but sometimes cats still scratch up things they're not supposed to.#And I think the rationale of potential self-injury is something to consider.

WIBTA for taking my elderly, aggressive cat to a groomer?
My childhood cat is M16 going on 17. I lived with him for 13-14 years, and he’s always been very elegant and pretty. Growing up, he was meticulous about grooming to the point where it became a family in-joke that he was a movie star or a model or something in a past life. But he’s getting older now, and he had a particularly hard summer—in addition to slowly going blind, he escaped the house one night and no one could find him till the next morning, and which point he’d clearly been hit by a car or attacked by an animal. He had a broken leg and was slowly suffocating due to a hole in his lung, but somehow the old bastard pulled through and recovered surprisingly quickly (the vet clinic cheered when my parents gave them the update, it was so sweet).
While I’m beyond grateful that he’s still with us, when I came home for the holidays this year I noticed that he’s looking pretty rough. I keep seeing clumps of dirt (or whatever it is he’s getting into, at one point I swear it was chocolate despite my family NEVER leaving anything like that out where the cats can get into it) in his fur that he’ll just leave there. His back claws in particular look like they’re caked in mystery gunk. I don’t think he’s being neglected or anything, but between the blindness and all the crap he went through with his leg I don’t think he’s been able to keep up and groom himself as thoroughly as he used to. It looks really uncomfortable, especially considering how persnickety he was about keeping clean in the past.
I definitely don’t have the expertise to properly groom him myself, and given how old he is + his recent injury I don’t feel comfortable learning through youtube university and potentially hurting him. Problem is, he’s kind of a monster. He was half feral when we got him, and it shows. He’s sweet most of the time, but can get overstimulated with little warning and tends to bite or scratch when that happens. I don’t think he’s ever bitten anyone outside of the family, but he still makes the vet + vet techs’ lives a living hell when we take him for a checkup unless we drug him first. Even when we DO drug him, if he gets pissed enough he’ll sometimes fight through it and struggle and yowl as if he was 100% lucid. Old age has done nothing to temper this, when he got injured this summer he fought so hard at the clinic that they had to knock him all the way out just to get an x-ray.
It feels negligent to just let him be filthy now that I’ve noticed it, but I also don’t want to put an elderly animal AND an innocent groomer through an unnecessary amount of stress just because I think his paws look icky. *I* think he would be more comfortable if he was nice and clean, but he seems happy and perky so it’s very possible he doesn’t even care. I’ve never taken an animal to a groomer before and I have no idea what the etiquette is.
If tumblr doesn’t think it would be too bad, I’ll bring the idea of getting him professionally groomed up with my parents. If y’all think I’d be an asshole for putting him + a groomer through that, I’ll back off and let him live his best pigpen life.
Pet tax (blind old man in his “thank you for surviving” gift, a brand new heated bed):
What are these acronyms?

What's the difference between a domestic long hair and a domestic medium hair? I was told once that any cat with "long hair" and unknown pedigree was a domestic medium hair; only purebreds could be classified as long haired. I think that's wrong but haven't looked into it. Thoughts?
That’s odd, I’ve never heard that.
Domestic Longhair isn’t a niche term. It’s used by rescues and shelters, it’s used by veterinary professionals and groomers, it’s even used in research if relevant.
Longhair is a recessive trait, so if you see a cat that isn’t shorthair then they’re longhair. A longhair cat can’t “carry” shorthair to make their coat “medium” or “semi-long.”
Obviously there’s multiple genes that influence coat length and texture since we have “semi-longhair” and “longhair” cats to begin with, but I’m not sure how well-studied/identified these are and certain random-bred cats aren’t widely tested to see where they fall.
So this is all a long-winded way to say it’s pretty subjective.
A lot of breeds we think of as longhair are considered semi-longhair for registration purposes, like the Maine Coon. You can use the phenotype of these breeds compared to “genuine” longhair breeds like the Persian when trying to assess a whether you’d consider a random-bred cat to be a DLH or a DMH/DSLH.
Persian from Shaparack, considered a longhair breed. The hair is long from top to bottom, including on the back of the neck right up to where it meets the head.
Siberian from SarSibi, considered a semi-longhair breed. The hair is “short” up top and directly behind the head, getting longer as you go down. The legs are also more defined against the body, not drowning in as much floof.

still thinking ab my silly little volleyball au with tae's team...
tenzo has s1 tsukki's "it's just a club activity" mentality because he's a new member among this group of already close/established friends -brought in to fill the gap left by their previous captain no less - but slowly becomes one of the team's trusted pillars with his consistent receives like daichi 🥺
who would've known "volleyball saved my life" takeru, "i probably wouldn't be here without these guys" mizuki, hagane/kamizuki "the court gave us somewhere to belong" kotetsu/izumo, and uzumaki "i can't be anything but his ace" inaba would sway tenzo's wooden heart at least a little
alto putting their hand on his shoulder saying it's hard not to be influenced by these guys, huh? and then runs up to everyone else laughing in the sun, tenzo's left wondering if it's really alright for him to fight alongside them if he doesn't have the same commitment but yomu pats his back as he passes and tae smiles at tenzo with the rest of the team that reminds him that it doesn't matter if his motivations don't match everyone else because he's WANTED on this team and they're going to win oh i'm going to be ill
not sure what they'd all be doing in the present but i'd imagine like the haikyuu boys some of them went to rep japan and some didn't
inaba runs a little soba stand with his girlfriend, zumo's a tattoo artist and tetsu works at an autoshop a block or two away so he's always there to bother his husband during lunch, kohaku is a sign painter, tenzo (goes by yamato these days to everyone except tae) is predictably an architect, yomu married rich and they never saw him again (he still texts pictures of his cats but isn't very social), mizuki teaches night school but coco earns more as a fashion designer, and rio's a lawyer
their coach is a pet groomer and if you see them frequently enough you'll notice the funny toothpick guy and the funny mask guy still hanging around, takashi's still studying medicine, and shisui works in marketing for the uchiha business firm and ends up running in the same circles as rio a lot
i'm conflicted on whether tae should still be playing professionally at 27 (if he is inaba, kohaku and tenz are probably there with him) or if he's found himself a job that has nothing to do with volleyball; probably would end up travelling a lot regardless however since that's just who he is he absolutely would coach at the local youth center though and organize little food drives/community events as often as he can no matter what path he took
they're in frequent contact despite busy lives and hang out often but all meet for drinks once or month and pretend like they haven't seen each other in decades. when they go to the beach and the net comes out they're just as competitive as they were 5-10 years ago, just with a lot more complaining about joints after </3
oh and just for fun, their numbers and positions :3c
1# Shisui - Captain (Former) / Wing Spiker / Outside Hitter 2# Tae - Captain / Middle Blocker / Setter 3# Kohaku - Vice Captain (Former) / Middle Blocker / Setter 4# Inaba - Wing Spiker / Opposite Hitter / Ace 5# Kotetsu - Wing Spiker / Outside Hitter 6# Izumo - Setter / Outside Hitter 7# Tenzo/Yamato - Vice Captain / Middle Blocker / Opposite Hitter 8# Mizuki - Libero 9# Yomu - Pinch Server / Middle Blocker 10# Aiji - Wing Spiker / Outside Hitter 11# Hotaru - Setter 12# Hazuki - Middle Blocker

Introduction + Important Stuff
Hiyo! We're Mystic-Wolfs, which is our preferred online collective/system name, nice to meet you ^^
Why we? We are a DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) System, which in very simple terms means we did not have an easy life and it caused our consciousness to not fully form so there is more than one living in the body, so we refer to ourselves with plural vocabulary since it feels more natural.
How to adress us? Please address us by our collective name if you mean us as a system, or the name you see the post signed off with if you talk/mean to the person directly. Otherwise, we use She/They pronouns on a system level (until stated otherwise!).
What else is there to know? We are an adult, at least bodily, are Autistic, have a bunch of psychiatric and other medical disorders/illnesses, are disabled. We are also survivors. This of course is not nearly all that there is to us, but those are the key things (in sense of how we function). So due to our Autism, I would highly ask to be patient and nice to us.
We are also collectivley Asexual, so please respect this as well.
Our DM's are also always open to friendly people ^^ (I promise we don't bite hihi)
What can I expect on here? A lot of fandom rambles, opinions, poems, thoughts, art, WIP's, but also Triggering content that could count as NSFW (these posts would obviously be spoilered and be warned with TW's and everything, but since we are filled with trauma, it has to go somewhere (in forms of vents/vent Art). If you dislike such content please don't consume those posts or leave this page entirely to stay safe! We would hate to cause harm)
Supporting/Safe places:
💜 Plurality in all (respectful) forms 💜

So it turns out that, being very much like a sheep, despite regular grooming that by cat standards should have left him tangle free, Jode had developed huge mats on his haunches that i did not notice because his fur was so dense and fluffy the brushes simply Did Not Reach Them so:
I am an idiot
Jodes temperment has improved suddenly and drastically as has his activity level (i seriously thought it was the heat wave)
He is a short hair boy from now on and
Because i am not a professional cat groomer but also Am Not Letting My Boy Suffer he now kinda looks like Zenitsu from Demon Slayer

If it isn't too sore of a subject, I would love to see / hear more about Barney, he is such a handsome guy ❤
If so, what is something you are working on / thinking about working on right now that you enjoy?
So I unintentionally left this ask sitting here for a long time.
But this is Barney, some of you may remember him.
We adopted him at four months old from an independent animal rescue, he apparently was a pedigree but they wouldn't let us have his papers, story goes he was an unwanted wedding present from a husband to his second wife.
He actually shared my birthday (June 15th) and he made it to around... 14/15 years old I think we adopted him in like 2004/2005. He passed in early 2020 not long before the first lockdowns kicked in which was... weirdly well timed in it's own way.
As it turns out if you adopt a 4 month old puppy you are going to get thrown right into the 'second developmental period' aka 'oh no my dog is being a little shit all of a sudden send help', he was a bitey puppy and still was prone to being bitey throughout his life (mostly on objects thanfully) he managed to bite through several dog leads during this time. He turned out ok even though in hindsight I don't think anyone in my family really knew what we were doing because we'd never owned a dog before and there's stuff I would do differently if I ever own a dog again.
We also got thrown in the deep end and had to take him to the very within the first few days of taking him home as it turns out the rescue sent us home with the wrong food and westies have... sensitive stomachs. Didn't stop him from trying to eat everything however.
There's still chew marks on our living room door frame from him and probably a few of our chairs. He loved soccer/footballs but hated wheeled suitcases. He'd chase squirrels, stalk pigeons and sometimes try and chase rabbits, actually liked cats (at one point he actually had a friend in a local cat) but was terrified of sheep (once there was some local art stuff going on in town, someone put sheep in the church yard, he was not a fan, he would ever since that daytry and run in the other direction if he heard them bleat). He thought he was a lot bigger than he was and had several staffies he was the boss of and at least a couple of rottweilers, he did not like bulldogs very much (I think the wheezing freaked him out) and had beef with border terriers for a long time due to a particularly mean one down park, he had an eternal rival in a basset hound who lived over the road who didn't like him very much, one of his best friends was a mini schnauzer named Odo. He loved carrots, apples and cheese. He loved to swim but was not the biggest fan of a bath and was suspicious of the fountain in our high street.
For a little dog he had a VERY loud bark. He was a very good guard dog really but not the best thing when you live in semi-detached housing with thin walls.
He couldn't be trusted with tennis balls as he would rip them apart and then try and eat them, he loved those pig squeaky toys but would destroy them. Never give a westie anything with stuffing in it.
One year for Christmas I received a giant teddybear and Barney's reaction was to go 'Oh this would make a good dog bed' . Once we had to keep him clean for an entire week after a groomer visit as he was booked in for some professional dog photos at a local petstore, and yes once those were done he did get himself very muddy. He'd look white until snow showed up. His first response to snow was to think 'Can I eat this?' Once my parents were walking him in some woodlands and nearly lost him because he decided to chase after a herd of deer. He jumped in a lake once and sunk and when he came up he was green.
He was a grumpy old man from the start really, but he was also a very good boy.

Friends, the winter gifting holidays are coming, so it's a good and not weird time to make and give celebratory pet keepsakes.
Some pets aren't cooperative and it won't be possible but MAN is it worth multiple tries to have these things.
Washable kids' paints can be used for prints, and Crayola Model Magic is my favorite thing for impressions because it is easy to handle and not sticky, and can be trimmed when it's not quite dry to fit any container. There's instructions online for how to do all of it.
Fur can be taken at home if you have clippers, taken by a groomer, taken by a vet at the next vet visit, or even, if you don't require intact locks, right off the brush. I always take a good hunk. (If you feel weird explaining to the vet or groomer, just tell them family moving out of state wants a keepsake.)
You can make more than one of these things so you can share with everyone in the household (kids can take theirs when they move out, each pet parent can keep one if they split up) or with friends that are pet family, or to mail to someone far away. They can also be taken of pets you foster, must rehome, or which otherwise in some way pass through your life without remaining.
Just consider getting it done while it's fun and funny. And consider saving one of the attempts that came out Real Bad, because those are hilarious.
* If your pet has epic toe weeds and you can't get a clean impression, wait until a groomer clears those, or if it's a cat, offer to pay a claw clip fee to have your vet clear one paw with the trimmers so you can do impressions or prints. (I recommend a professional do it for ALL cats as their toe webbing is usually very delicate.)

Without a doubt, this would be Angeal's favorite YouTube channel. A professional groomer grooms challenging dogs, most of them huge, and the occasional cat or disabled duck.
His second fave would probably be a seventeen-way tie of no-talking/ASMR baking channels.

Is A Yorkshire Terrier Right For You
Vital Stats
Size: Small
Coat: Long-haired, low shedding, requires daily grooming
Exercise: 30 minutes a day
Life span: 12+ years. Yorkshire Terriers are one of the longer-living breeds and can live into their late teens.
Breed group: Terrier
Temperament: Intelligent, independent, confident
Temperament & Personality
A little, lively, self-assured breed who’s bundles of fun
Originally bred to catch rats in mills, Yorkshire Terriers have a hunting instinct and are bold, fearless characters.
They make great companions for those living alone and good pets for families with older children, as long as kids are taught how to interact with them correctly. They are energetic and enjoy time spent off the lead and playing games.
They’re more assertive and playful than their ‘companion’ status would suggest, but they still love to be around people.
True to their terrier nature, Yorkies are fun, feisty, and love to chase!
They are happy to live with other dogs and cats if introduced correctly from a young age, but should be watched around small pets as they are hardwired to chase.
Yorkshire Terrier Training & Exercise
Originally bred as working dogs, Yorkshire Terriers would much rather be busy than sit on a lap for long periods.
Training tips
Yorkies are naturally eager to please and will therefore learn quickly, although, like other toy breeds, they can be slow to housetrain.
Good socialization from early on will help to ensure they are used to unexpected events, such as busy environments and attention from young children.
Exercise
It’s recommended for adult Yorkshire Terriers to exercise for 30 minutes a day. Adequate exercise will help to burn off energy in the right way, leaving them less prone to territorial behavior and excessive barking, which are common dog behavior problems in Yorkies.
Are Yorkshire Terriers good with kids?
Whilst Yorkshire Terriers are playful and affectionate, they can also be sensitive and are not best suited to homes with younger children.
A better question is rather, "Are Yorkies SAFE with children?" My answer is, "With most children under about the age of 9 or 10.... no."
A child can seriously injure a Yorkshire Terrier by stepping on him, or by sitting on him when he's curled under a blanket or pillow, where he frequently likes to sleep. Many Yorkies feel overwhelmed by the loud voices, roughhousing, and quick movements that children can't help making – and stress and fearfulness (even defensive biting) may be the result. Safety is especially an issue with the smallest Yorkies. Larger individuals are sturdier.
However, they make great family pets for households with older children and will love to play in the heart of the family. As with all dog breeds, Yorkshire Terriers should always be supervised around children.
Are Yorkshire Terriers hypoallergenic?
As a low shedding breed, Yorkshire Terriers are generally thought to be suitable for those with allergies. It’s important to remember than no dog is totally hypoallergenic, but there are some breeds that are better for allergy-sufferers than others.
Yorkshire Terrier Grooming
Yorkshire Terriers have a long, silky coat that continues to grow, much like human hair. This means that while Yorkies don’t shed as much as other breeds, they do require a high level of grooming.
Daily brushing can help to prevent matting of their long fur
They will benefit from regular haircuts from a professional groomer who will be able to help you choose from a number of cuts and styles.
Typically, long-haired Yorkies will sport a top knot to keep fur out of their eyes, while owners who prefer shorter hair go for a trimmed-all-over ‘puppy cut’.
Yorkshire Terrier Nutrition
With the correct care and nutrition, Yorkies have a long life span. To keep your Yorkshire Terrier in good condition, vets recommend that you feed them a breed-appropriate, high-quality pet food two to three times a day.
Stick to the portion sizes on the back of their pet food packaging, keeping their age and exercise levels in mind
Including a dry food can also help fend off gum disease
Barking
Very vocal
Common Yorkshire Terrier Health Conditions
There are certain health conditions that affect Yorkshire Terriers more frequently than other dog breeds. If you’re buying a puppy, you can increase your chances of having a happy and healthy dog by choosing a reputable Yorkshire Terrier breeder.
Periodontal disease
Yorkshire terriers, like other smaller breeds, are prone to developing dental and mouth issues, particularly gum disease. Because of their smaller mouths they are more likely to have overcrowding, and food, bacteria and minerals can accumulate on the gum line.
Pancreatitis
The pancreas is a fragile organ that lies between the liver and the small intestine. Yorkshire Terriers can be prone to a condition called pancreatitis, which means ‘inflammation of the pancreas’. It occurs when the digestive enzymes within the pancreas start attacking it.
Cushing’s disease
Cushing's disease occurs when an excessive amount of cortisol (or 'steroid') builds up in a dog's body. This can happen naturally or as a side-effect of the long-term use of corticosteroid medication. Either way, the ongoing increase of this hormone leads to a significant disruption in normal metabolism. Cushing's can be managed and controlled using medication, allowing the dog to continue to live a normal life.
Diabetes
Yorkshire Terriers are more prone to developing diabetes than other dogs, but can also develop it as a result of other conditions such as being overweight, inflammation of the pancreas or taking other drugs that interfere with insulin production.
Patella luxation
The kneecap (or ‘patella’) sits in a groove at the end of the femur (thigh bone). A dislocating (or ‘luxating’) kneecap is one that pops out of its groove. A relatively common condition in Yorkshire Terriers and other small breeds, dislocation happens because the alignment of the bones from the hip through the knee to the ankle is not straight, which pulls the kneecap to one side. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition, but surgery may be required to reduce the likelihood of arthritis and enable them to live a normal life.
Do Yorkies like to be cuddled?
Yorkies won't turn down a cuddle party. A lover of all things comfortable, the Yorkshire terrier enjoys cuddling with loved ones and snuggling into everything soft and fluffy. And for you, their silky coat isn't too bad for petting.
Yorkshire Terriers with strangers?
Keen of eye and sharp of tongue, most Yorkshire Terriers are very quick to announce strangers at the door. Once the visitor comes in, some Yorkies will be friendly and outgoing. But many others have the standoffish or suspicious nature of a true terrier.
Unfortunately, suspicious dogs can morph into shrill dogs who won't stop barking. And shrill dogs can easily turn nasty. You must teach a Yorkshire Terrier that he doesn't need to like strangers, but he does need to accept them politely.
