Messy doodles I made after watching The Devil And Daniel Mouse (1978). I have been watching a lot of 70s and 80s movies lately. I thought I would redraw some scenes from the short!

Disney, releasing Wish: "so it's all about legacy--the new generation surpassing the old, overcoming the evils perpetuated by them, relinquishing singular power... and there's an old man in a tower, uh... animal sidekick, i guess..., ah... magic...?
Miyazaki, just out of frame, sledgehammer raised:
#the boy and the heron#not tagging wish 'cause i'm being a little acidic#this isn't to be negative in the slightest--I really respect both films--but it's interesting to see how visceral boy+H gets with its story#what evils have to be rejected and what they represent--and how characters and the world suffer from those evils--as well as how the whole#'rejecting' part goes. in terms of animation powerhouses discussing their legacies - disney and miyazaki both - I find it interesting that#one makes a pretty safe and nostalgic movie about imagination and dreams; the other is a long trudge through the land of the dead.#b+h is a hard watch - and a look at the legacy of a man questioning his whole purpose in the world - after his cultural touchstones#have long passed by. Mahito needs to understand his grief to keep living--but if he drowns in it he'll just continue the cannibalistic and#violent world of his granduncle. how the hell do you make art when the trauma of your entire life has colored it forever? How can anyone?#maybe after a while... it's time to detonate that damn tower and keep living.#this is to say#if you have enough money to make whatever you want#Make It Fucking Count

The X trilogy + "psycho-biddy" influences
#x 2022#pearl#maxxxine#x series#strait-jacket#psycho#what ever happened to baby jane#horror#psycho-biddy#hagsploitation#made this whole big thing which i still might post eventually but. in terms of aesthetics. this abridged version is better lol#i'm not gonna finish the other post tonight but consider this a preview of sorts#i can't stop thinking about what if they leaned more into the 'hagsploitation' aspect of it all lol#i actually find it odd + off-putting that they start and end maxxxine with a bette davis reference#with a big significant psycho cameo at the bates motel itself#and there's not really any payoff for those allusions!!#i think if you're gonna try to tie into a legacy of older horror films you should do it in a sincere way#because that just felt like 'elevated horror' bonus points + nostalgia bait#anyway. it's fun to think about the potential it had + how all the building blocks exist within the narrative to do something interesting#and i am a 1960s hagsploitation subgenre apologist lol#what ever happened to baby jane? changed my brain chemistry the first time i watched it as a kid#so maybe i'm just nostalgia baiting myself making these connections lmao#but it could have been so good#it could have been the perfect synthesis of the shared themes across all three movies#but i don't think hagsploitation gets butts in movie theater seats like girlboss 80s nostalgia vaguely true crime related shit#oh wait also i guess calling psycho a hagsploitation movie is like. probably not 100% accurate#but it is though. it's not an inversion of the subgenre bc the subgenre didn't exist yet#but it builds up a mystery 'psycho-biddy' character only to reveal that she's not the murderer#which is also what happens in strait-jacket so i think it counts!!#+ psycho is directly referenced in all 3 movies so itās a pretty clear influence on the trilogy as a whole

You know about A Monster In Paris?! I love that movie! So underated! So cool!
I SURE DO. How could I not? Gentle characters are my biggest weakness and Francoeur is the sweetest boy I've ever seen. I mean look at him! šāØ
#asks#interests#gen talk#a monster in paris#francoeur#this used to be such a huge one for me omg š#I was obsessed!#the film itself is pretty good#but Francoeur and Lucille's dynamic can have all my heart ;_;

So I watched A Silent Voice with some but minor knowledge of the story going in. And right at the beginning when Shoko's bullying started I had the nagging worry that while Ishida would be redeemed they'd leave Ueno and Kawai as one-dimensional bullies. Painting the girls as the "real villains" while the male protagonist got to have depth. Anyway I just finished the movie and I would like to formally apologize to Oima Yoshitoki and Yoshida Reiko I should never have doubted you.
#i was unfamiliar with your game madams. i hope you can forgive me#never seen a film with a male mc become SO dedicated to complex relationships between its flawed female side characters#a silent voice#Ishida shoya#ueno naoka#kawai miki#the scene where yaeko slapped naoka was the peak of the movie to me#seems like she needed it too she'd spent the whole film up to this point basically BEGGING shoko to punch her#but shoko's too nice and it bothers her sooooo much. she's like HATE ME. and shoko's like 'i don't' and she's like WHY NOT???? FIX THAT#naola and miki are very interesting parallels because miki NEEDS to be liked by everyone and naoka wants so badly to be disliked instead.#which leads to both of them being pretty shitty but in essentially opposite ways IT'S GREAT#koe no katachi#i have no doubt that the fandom is still going to be INCREDIBLY weird about both of these girls but what's new#oh a flawed woman exists in a media property? yeah it's a real mystery what the internet's gonna say about that lmao

Condemned! (1929) "Your kindness makes me forget that I'm a convict. You make me wonder how I could ever have been a thief. In the morning when we come by, the line of us from the prison, I meet you coming from early mass with your rosary and book. You make me forget that this place is a prison. You make it seem like ... like any village at home in France, with all the women coming from early mass and the streets, sweet with the smell of baking."
#ronald colman#ann harding#condemned 1929#condemned#my gifs#classic hollywood#classic film#old hollywood#this film felt so intimate with the leads#they barely kiss but they nail this sense of touch and yearning?#also love the cinematography of some scenes its pretty interesting!

Detroit: Become Human / Robocop
#Detroit Become Human#Robocop#dbh Connor#dbh Hank#Alex Murphy#Anne Lewis#Elijah Kamski#Crime busting lads of Detroit#In the fic āMetal of Manā the fact that Anderson and Murphy knew each other from his previous precinct was such a fun idea#I got a kick when watching Buckaroo Banzai to see young Weller AND Clancy Brown as world savers in a band so that helped this concept too#BTW if some of you folks haven't seen robocop and are interested before you go and watch the original '87 film be wary it's pretty graphic

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972)
"Come children, Uncle Alan's going to curdle your blood."
"Uncle Alan already does. Turns my stomach, too."
#children shouldn't play with dead things#1972#horror imagery#horror film#bob clark#american cinema#alan ormsby#valerie mamches#jeff gillen#anya ormsby#paul cronin#jane daly#roy engleman#robert philip#bruce solomon#alecs baird#seth sklarey#bob sherman#curtis bryant#carl zittrer#a pretty rough and ready indie horror film about a theatre troupe who fuck around with the occult (andā naturallyā find out)#this hasn't a whole lot to recommend it on its own merits; it's most interesting as a formative work by filmmaker Clarkā his first stab at#the horror genre. juat a few years later Clark would helm the superlative Black Christmasā sincerely one of the greatest slasher#films ever madeā but Children... is if anything a testament to just how much his style progressed in a short span. there are moments here#that pack a visual punchā tbfā and once the dead begin to rise it improves considerably. anything with the impressive looking 'Orville'#corpse (third and final pics above) is great. the problem is more in the scriptā cowritten with star and frequent Clark collaborator Ormsby#it's a turgid messā with an hour of bitchy bickering between the theatre group before anything really happens. there's some great snark in#there and it's pretty entertaining at firstā but my god does it go on (and on) until you're willing the zombies to tear everyone to shreds#in the zombie canon this has obvious debts to Romero's NotLD as well as more traditional folkloreā but its emphasis stays frustratingly on#the unlikeable characters and their incidental conversations rather than exploring anything more interesting.

Amelia's old design from Ken Duncan's pencil tests. From his Instagram: "Captain Amelia design exploration via an animation test. 2000 After spending some time designing Amelia, I started an animation test, as we normally do. Emma Thompson was the voice actor and the design had a similar facial bone structure to her. These first few drawings are from the animation test. After it was completed the directors viewed it and felt it wasnāt appealing enough. Perhaps she came off too ācoldā, not enough charm. I drew over these poses with some new design ideas, which are shown in the following drawings here. Also, the last few drawings show my thumbnails thatād Iād sketched before animating, as I listened to Thompsonās voice performance (all on 2 pages). (Based on my sketches here, Iād always thought her hair was going to be black. I was surprised when I saw the eventual color model)."
Also, just for fun, side-by-side comparisons in read more
#treasure planet#treasure planet 2002#ken duncan#films#2000s#captain amelia#i noticed that her old design keeps w/ the old hair style she ended up w/ after going from alien w/ tentacle hair to feline-like humanoid#pretty cool#i don't hate her final design but it does suck to see she got a redesign in part to make her look younger#although i'll admit her old face proportions do look kinda uncanny (in an interesting way)

sorry but I donāt consider people unhinged or esoteric or particularly strange and unusual for enjoying horror. itās a very popular genre. and consuming disturbing or scary media isnāt inherently subversive (though it can be). and as much as I enjoy certain horror properties, in general media consumption still doesnāt qualify as a personality or an inherent truth about how someone moves through the world
#people are like im the sickest freak youāll ever meet#and then theyāre a pretty regular person who like John jarpenterās That Thang#great movie#great interest#not sick or freaky to enjoy it#thatās a classic film

I think the funniest side-effect I have that comes from The LEGO Ninjago Movie being my entry into the fandom is that a small part of my brain will always associate Dave Franco with Lloyd - like I'll see a picture of Lloyd and it's a sudden battle between hearing his voice and Sam Vincent's
#i had to sheepishly explain to my parents the other day why and where i know dave franco from#(we were watching now you see me 2 - the magic heist film - which honestly was pretty good)#ANYWAy i was like āOHHH i recognise that voice - cool i can put a face to the voice nowā#and they were both like āwhere on earth have you heard his voice beforeā#š§āāļøā...he voices lloyd in the ninjago movieā#watched their smiles drop in real time LMAO#they love me and my interests dont worry guysšš#tbh they should have expected it - they know im kinda obsessed with Lloyd#(i force them to look at every lego set i build afterwards/they've watched a couple episodes here and there with me)#anyway tis funny to me#hmiae rambles#hmiae personal#ninjago#lego ninjago#the lego ninjago movie#tlnm#ninjago lloyd#lloyd garmadon
