You know, given that P&P was published in 1813 before the 1696 window tax was repealed, she might just be admiring both the outdoors AND the expansive and numerous windows themselves. I mean, good windows really were a big sign of wealth and consequence until 1851 when the tax was finally repealed. But yeah, also, yeah, she's definitely more interested in the outdoors than the Great Chimney Places of the Wealthy
It's true that windows were a major status symbol at the time and long before, but I don't think Elizabeth much cares about that, in all honesty! That is the relevant historical context for Mr Collins's rhapsodies over Rosings' windows, for instance:
she could not be in such raptures as Mr Collins expected the scene to inspire, and was but slightly affected by his enumeration of the windows in front of the house, and his relation of what the glazing altogether had originally cost Sir Lewis de Bourgh
He's silly but he's not mistaken in identifying the windows as a significant status symbol (which without that cultural context can seem like just another Mr Collins absurdity). But Elizabeth specifically, as a person, is consistently not very interested in these kinds of status symbols (though she knows they're there and understands what they signify). She is attracted to natural beauty and unassuming elegance, which is the overwhelming note at Pemberley:
She had never seen a place for which nature had done more, or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste.
Even when it does come to Pemberley's expensive interior, she focuses on the aesthetic dissimilarity to Rosings and, even more, about what is suggested about Darcy's relationships to other people dependent on him (Elizabeth's takeaway from the pretty interior decorating project for Georgiana is "He is certainly a good brother" and not how much disposable income this represents, say).
The fuller quote when she first approaches the window is pretty clear about what Elizabeth is focusing on, IMO:
Elizabeth, after slightly surveying it, went to a window to enjoy its prospect. The hill, crowned with wood, from which they had descended, receiving increased abruptness from the distance, was a beautiful object. Every disposition of the ground was good; and she looked on the whole scene, the river, the trees scattered on its banks, and the winding of the valley, as far as she could trace it, with delight. As they passed into other rooms, these objects were taking different positions; but from every window there were beauties to be seen.
#it's sort of like her recognizing the darcy family livery when his curricle shows up in lambton#before making out darcy and georgiana themselves - she knows what an omnipresent livery signifies#and can instantly identify darcy's which suggests she's seen and noticed it many times#but we hear about it exactly once because she doesn't actually care#and also all these other concrete signs of prestige really flow outwards from the land in their socioeconomic system as well#it's often said that the only difference between the bennets and darcys in social status is that darcy has more money but this is very wron#the difference is that he has vastly more (inherited) LAND and thus power and prestige#the money generated by that land and what it can buy are part of that prestige but only part - so for elizabeth (a member of the gentry)#it makes sense even in socioeconomic terms that she's very focused on the land; even her joke to jane about mercenary motives#doesn't mention his money—only his land#(we're told that pemberley itself generates the full ten thousand a-year so we're not dealing w/ a norland + other inheritances situation#i'd argue that the main significance of his wealth for elizabeth is what it says about his property and not the other way around#even in her first conversation with wickham she describes darcy as 'a man of very large property in derbyshire' rather than by income)#melyzard#respuestas#elizabeth bennet#fitzwilliam darcy#austen blogging#pride and prejudice#jane austen

I keep thinking how sad Quill Kipps' whole deal is. He's brought up as a child soldier and he becomes quite good at it, good enough to work at one of the best agencies. He works hard, suffers, loses people, carries on because it's all got to be worth it. He ages in a system that prioritizes youth and feels everything special about him slowly starting to slip away. He has put everything into being an elite agent and he's about to age out of everything he's ever known.
He gets tangled with an unruly bunch of independent agents. They're annoying rule breakers but god they're amazing. Part of his beef with them is he can feel their talent rolling off them in waves making him acutely aware of how his is almost used up. When it becomes unsafe for him to pretend any more, he does what other agents do and becomes a supervisor. He keenly feels the separation from himself and agents in the field and finds he now can't just sit on the sidelines and watch others put their lives at stake when he can't help.
He's adrift, nothing to his name but his old reputation and a set of skills that are no longer useful. He ends up tangled back with the independents because they trust him - need him - and by god does he want to be needed. He wants so desperately to be part of their world again. They find some goggles that allow him to see visitors again and he's like a kid at Christmas. He can finally be involved again! It doesn't have to be over!
While working with them he learns everything he was taught to believe in was a lie, the prestigious agency he gave his entire being for is causing the rise of spirits. Once his involvement is found out, he loses his pension and privileges. He is cut off entirely from his old support system. With nothing left, the independents take him in. He's useful but he knows it's more out of pity. He works hard, almost dies and fights to dismantle the very establishment he spent his best years serving. The battle is won but things stay the same for him.
He is still a young adult clinging with aching fingers onto his childhood and teen years because that was the only way he had purpose. His closest friends are still young teens, five or more years younger than him. He chastises them for their childishness even as he desires more than anything to be one of them. He is Peter Pan, refusing to grow up because there is nothing for him as an adult in haunted England. He does not even look towards his future because he cannot let go of his shining past where he was actually needed.

sociolinguistics secret: it is impossible to learn how to "talk proper." the prestige speakers are constantly innovating new ways to differentiate themselves from non-prestige speakers, because the reason they discriminate on a linguistic basis has nothing to do with some notion of correctness and everything to do with social hierarchy.

Hey Hope! Any predictions for the grammys? Do you think Harry will sweep, get snubbed, or will there be a more equal distribution among him, Adele, Beyonce, etc.?
hey babe!
i solidly believe AIW will win record of the year bc it quite literally. was record of the year imo and everyone knows it whether they like the song or not haha not sure if he’ll sweep. i think there’s possible potential for that, but i also think like the 2021 grammys theres likely to be a more even distribution of awards between several of the noms. i don’t think it’s a year where it’s obvious one artist will sweep over the others even if this wasn’t the absolute strongest year for music. it was strong enough to not have a complete front runner. so! i’m not expecting a sweep personally but i am highly expecting a win or two!

I currently go to a "gifted kid" school and the difference between my school and my old school or my brothers' school is that this one has a project-based grading system and tiny classes where the teachers can and do individualize our education the best they can. and also better funding cause this is a private school with a pricey tuition and a lot of rich parents who give big donations.
before I started at this school I was warned not to go because it was becoming a "special needs" school
and it has become very clear to me that both a "special needs" program and a "gifted" program are similar in the fact that they generally prioritize individualized education.
and I would just like to emphasize how fucking fake this entire system of how we rank special needs, general, and gifted kids because the way we structure our school systems is based in eugenics and why the fuck does the school system depend on ranking kids. literally everyone would succeed if we stopped with the emphasis on measuring intelligence and ranking kids based on that and that whole mindset and instead it was just teaching without all the high academics and gifted programs and special needs programs. I mean why aren't all teachers taught to teach kids with neurodivergencies and other various disabilities in the first place. why don't we emphasize individualized education and all that.
There is no inherent difference in the intellectual capabilities any kid even if there was we have no reliable way of measuring intelligence to prove it so please stop with the whole gifted superiority complex and can we please promote general improvements in the school system and for fucks sake stop ranking kids at school

I'm not saying The Terror in general and Joplittle specifically have definitively given me permanent brain rot but I am finding it funny that I'm picking up parallels and similarities with both in a series as far removed from it as Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai
#first of all you've got mizu/jopson:#black-haired blue-eyed hyper-competent people from poor backgrounds with a missing/awol father and an addiction-addled mother#both are considered weird-looking (mizu in-universe and jopson in fandom) and are usually aloof but can be witty funny and charming#both also have complicated emotionally-fraught relationships with a big red-haired irishman who serves as a pseudo father figure#oh OH and they both have severe abandoment issues and guilt-related trauma#then there's taigen/little - they're both cringe-fail dudes who suck at leadership but are good men at heart and#who are kind and loyal to a fault and will not suffer injustices done to others#they also both come from a place of privilege in contrast with mizu/tom and are good-looking well-bred men in positions of prestige/power#ned also contrasts with mikiyo (mizu's husband) bc of the whole stoic gentlemanly horse boy aesthetic#akemi is both hickey AND jfj in reverse but nobody is ready for that level of discourse so I'll just file it away to gnaw on later#then there's the whole colonial/imperialist narrative and the kind of damage such systems do even unto the smallest of scales#and how the colonial mindset is in and of itself usually its own downfall bc c'mon mizu also shares parallels with silna AND tuunbaq#just like mizu is both the samurai AND the onryo and she will be the very downfall of the colonizers who caused her to appear#AND also the sir john/shogun parallel of hubris coming back to literally bite you in the ass#i.e. sir john disregarding danger for imperialist vanity and gloryhounding vs. the shogun's imperialist mindset and greed#leading to him dying by a colonizer's hand#y'all I'm am experiencing fandom in the nth dimension right now but maybe that's just hunger and/or low blood sugar talking#idk man idk I'm seeing patterns I'm connecting dots#rant post#joplittle (adjacent)#the terror... sort of

Proficient Patios and Backyard Designs: A Symphony of Elegance and Comfort
Tumblr media
Transforming a simple outdoor space into an oasis of comfort and style is an art. In this blog, we take you through the exquisite world of proficient patios and backyard designs that promise not only comfort but a delightful aesthetic appeal. From the enchanting nuances of wood patios designs to the profound strategies encompassed in residential and commercial garden design, here we explore the various facets that can help carve your outdoor Eden.
A Dive into Proficient Patios and Backyard Designs
In the contemporary world, backyards are not just a patch of green space at your home. They have evolved into much more; they are a canvas where you can paint your imaginations, reflecting personal aesthetics and preferences. Here we delineate the elements that contribute to patios and backyard designs.
Balance between Nature and Construction
Balancing the natural elements with constructed features is the essence of proficient design. Incorporating greenery around your patio can enhance its beauty manifold, creating a space where you can unwind amidst nature.
Personalized Features
In the arena of backyard designs, personalization holds a prominent place. Features such as fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and water elements can be added to tailor your backyard according to your preferences.
Multi-Functional Spaces
Creating a backyard that serves multiple purposes is a hallmark of a proficient design. Spaces that can transition seamlessly from a tranquil relaxation spot in the morning to a vibrant party venue in the evening represent the epitome of modern backyard designs.
Wood Patios Designs: Merging Tradition with Modernity
Wood has always been a popular choice when it comes to patio designs, thanks to its timeless beauty and versatility. In this section, we shed light on the various wood patios designs that can redefine the aesthetics of your outdoor space.
Classic Hardwood
Hardwoods like teak, ipe, and mahogany not only look luxurious but are durable, resisting the adversities of weather remarkably well. Incorporating these in your patio design can imbue your space with a timeless charm.
Composite Wood
An eco-friendly alternative to traditional wood, composite wood is a mixture of wood fibers and plastics. This material offers the beauty of wood without the maintenance hassles, making it a popular choice for modern patios.
Decking Patterns
Experimenting with different decking patterns can be a game-changer. Designs like herringbone, picture frame, or diagonal decking can create a visually appealing space, taking the aesthetics of your patio to a new level.
Residential and Commercial Garden Design: A Dichotomy of Purpose
In the expansive world of outdoor aesthetics, a detailed exploration into the nuances of residential and commercial garden design stands paramount. These domains, though aligned in their pursuit of enhancing outdoor spaces, distinctly carve out their niches based on unique requirements and defining characteristics. As we delve deeper, let’s unfold the layers that sculpt the landscapes of these two realms, making each of them a sanctuary of nature, aligned with the divergent visions and purposes they serve.
Residential Garden Design: Crafting Personal Havens
Integrating Personal Tastes
In the cozy confines of residential settings, garden design emerges as a canvas where personal tastes and preferences come alive in vibrant hues and textures. This domain seeks to intertwine the subtle strokes of individuality into the garden space, mirroring the homeowner’s aesthetic inclinations and lifestyle narratives.
The residential garden metamorphoses into an extension of the inhabitant’s personality, a living entity that resonates harmoniously with their sensibilities. Each corner, each alcove holds the potential to narrate a story, woven with elements that echo the homeowner's tastes. Whether it is a rustic corner filled with vintage charms or a modern enclave adorned with contemporary art pieces, the objective is always to carve out a personal haven that pulsates with familiarity and warmth, a place where one can retreat into a world that mirrors their inner aesthetic universe.
Functional and Aesthetic Balance
Residential gardens bear the great responsibility of harmonizing functionality with aesthetics, creating spaces that are both visually captivating and utilitarian in essence. This delicate balancing act transforms the garden into a multifaceted entity, catering not only to the visual senses but also fostering spaces that seamlessly integrate into the family’s lifestyle.
Here, the garden blossoms into a versatile space, offering realms for relaxation where one can soak in nature's tranquility, corners for entertainment where laughter and joy reverberate, and zones for recreation where energy and enthusiasm find their playground. It evolves into a living entity, accommodating the rhythms of daily life, offering solaces of quietude, bursts of joy, and moments of reflection. Through this harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, the residential garden unfurls into a living tapestry, weaving the stories and rhythms of the family it nestles.
Commercial Garden Design: Reflecting Professional Essence
Reflecting Corporate Image
Venturing into the sphere of commercial garden design, one encounters spaces that embody the philosophies and values of the corporate entities they represent. Here, the garden transforms into a visual narrator, reflecting the corporate image through meticulously chosen design elements that resonate harmoniously with the brand’s ethos and vision.
This realm is crafted with a keen eye on creating a cohesive and professional ambiance, where every aspect, from the layout to the plant selection, echoes the brand's identity. The commercial garden, in this regard, mirrors a company's philosophy, creating spaces that breathe the brand's essence, fostering a harmonious dialogue between the natural surroundings and the corporate identity, and offering visitors a glimpse into the entity's core values and beliefs.
Emphasis on Accessibility
Accessibility and convenience are given a lot of weight in commercial garden design, which is one of the distinguishing characteristics of this type of garden layout. This helps to make sure that the area can effectively serve a wide variety of people. In this field, the design concepts are carved with a vision to offer facilities and services that resonate with a wide spectrum of people. Elements that support inclusivity and comfort are woven into the designs in order to accomplish this vision.
The business garden develops into an inviting area as a result, one in which practicality and elegance are brought together through the provision of walkways that lead visitors through verdant landscapes, seating arrangements that stimulate talks, and amenities that cater to the need of a wide variety of individuals. A garden that welcomes each visitor into a lively yet warm embrace, offering a green sanctuary in the midst of the hectic business world is fostered in this area, which is a place where accessibility and beauty meet.
Tips for Crafting Your Dream Backyard
As you venture into the process of transforming your backyard, here are some tips that might come in handy.
Collaborative Planning
Whether it's a residential project or a commercial one, involving all the stakeholders in the planning process can be beneficial. This collaborative approach ensures that the design meets the needs and preferences of all users.
Expert Guidance
Seeking the assistance of experts who specialize in patios and backyard designs can be a prudent move. Their expertise and insights can help in crafting a space that is both beautiful and functional.
Sustainable Practices
Incorporating sustainable practices in your garden design is not just environmentally responsible but can also offer long-term benefits. From using local plants to adopting water-saving irrigation methods, these practices can make a difference.
Conclusion: Crafting Spaces That Resonate with Beauty and Comfort
In the big scheme of things, the goal of designing beautiful and comfortable patios and backyards is the same as it has always been: to create areas that are the right combination of beauty and comfort. Those places that exude an air of refined sophistication and provide a haven from the stresses of everyday life are called sanctuaries.
As we make our way through the ever-evolving world of wood patios designs and delve deeper into the intricate details of residential and commercial garden design, it becomes clear that the process of constructing a backyard oasis of one's dreams is one that is fraught with adventure and rich in potential payoffs.
You are able to design a backyard that is a reflection of your aesthetic sensibilities and the way you want to live if you plan it out carefully and pay close attention to the particulars during the construction process. A location in which each component, from the type of wood used to the design of the garden, works in harmony with the others to provide an atmosphere that is simultaneously refined and inviting.
Embarking on this journey to create proficient patios and backyard designs is akin to weaving a tapestry of dreams, where each thread represents a unique aspect of design and aesthetics. With time and effort, this tapestry transforms into a vibrant canvas, depicting the harmony of nature and human ingenuity.
As you stand at the threshold of transforming your outdoor space, embrace the potential that proficient patios and backyard designs offer. Harness the expertise available, explore the diverse design avenues, and craft a space that serves as a beacon of beauty, comfort, and personal satisfaction. Your dream backyard, a space that reflects your essence, awaits to be discovered and cherished!

Playing Pachinkremental today. It's a fun .io idle game. I was expecting it to be super short but I keep unlocking more things which I always appreciate. (I really enjoy a mechanic of things not unlocking until they're relevant in a game, keeps things interesting) My only real complaint is I wish the points counter was on the left side of the screen so it didn't move when you scroll. While you can minimize upgrade groups on the right, you buy them often enough it's super annoying to have to keep opening and closing them. But that's a minor thing. Doesn't look like it has a prestige system So not a very long game but I've been enjoying it. 7/10 simple but enjoyable
