*despite there being no difference in-game, i feel like some of Robin's habits will depend on both their and the PC's gender. For example; growing up, male!Robin and male!PC took showers together because they were afraid of Bailey walking in on them when one of them was alone (yeah I know Vrel confirmed that Bailey took care of the orphans till they got to a certain age but I hate that balding old prick too much to give him any sort of credit). Now that they both are older and need to secure that bag to prevent their asses from being sold off to whoever is feeling particularly freaky on a Saturday, they can't do that anymore. And that makes poor Robin feel lonely😔. He just wants to splash in the bathtub again for old times sake and totally doesn't want to oogle the pc while he relaxes, hair all wet and nice, is it really too much to ask for? (Yes Robin, It's too much to ask for. The PC needs to collect a shit ton of money from sources more reliable than a lemonade stand) so you can't really blame him for masturbating in the shower while fantasizing about PC walking in on him taking a normal shower and asking if he can join and maybe even fuck in there :(

In a scenario where Robin and PC are of opposite gender, they stopped taking showers way early compared to if Robin and PC had the same gender. While both Male!Robin and Female!Robin give (opposite gender)!PC personal space, they can't help but be curious, it's only natural after, I mean you guys have known each other since childhood right? So there's no harm in peeking at PC during the night when he/she is pleasuring herself/himself with his/her door cracked open just a tiny bit. Robin is not being a pervert! He/she is just protecting the PC by standing near there door and peeking every now and then <3

On the other hand, if PC is a heavy sleeper then male!Robin will sneakily try to please himself using PC'S thighs or rub against their ass. He's not brave enough to finish there though, so he sneaks off to the bathroom or his room to cum while thinking about PC. This is a soft sci-fi/mystery/paranormal genre blend where you follow Xani (renamable and gender selectable) as they learn about themselves, their strange powers, and the mystery around their mother. I love this game so much, mostly because of how much I related to the main character as well as the love interests. It's a solid game, and one I replay often.

Obscura the Dark Descent Chapter 1

This is still in development and pretty popular in the indie space, but I thought I'd shout it out just in case. I love the atmosphere of this game, and I like the concept of it. You're dying so you go into the mountain where everyone wears masks, searching for a cure. The feeling of it is so oppressive and all the love interests feel really unique. I also love the MC in this, they're so funny to me.

Pitstop in Purgatory

A weirdly comforting game about death. You play as a young woman named Astrid who died, but has no memories of it. As you interact with those also stuck in purgatory, those memories start coming back to her. I think the art style in this really helps with the feeling of this, and it's one of those games to kickback to over the weekend.

Titan Arum

I was so obsessed with this when it first came out. You're a failed writing whose back in your childhood home trying to finish a manuscript. However, weird things keep happening, and you're sanity might just be slipping. The art, the atmosphere, the references to the King in Yellow? 10/10. The fact this was made in ten days just makes it all the more impressive and I highly recommend it.

Breathless Winds

Poppy is a closeted trans woman who has just recovered from a boating accident. As she readjusts to life again, she has to find a way to save her home, and discover who she is and who she wants to be. The full game just came out a few days ago from posting this, so I've only played the demo but I loved it so much and I'm so excited to play the full game the second I get a chance. This is one of the only games where the main protagonist is a canon trans woman (if you know more dating sims like this please let me know lol), and the demo was lovely as well.

I'm cheating with this one because it's not in the realm of dating sims but shhh. I loved this game so much I had to shout it out. This is a sapphic horror game about a woman wanting to escape from an oppressive family and her conversation with the mermaid she loves. It's short, so I don't want to spoil it, but it was such a great experience. I enjoyed the characters and writing, and the art was stunning.

this ask sat in my inbox for a while because sadly my PC's power supply unit failed and made it less convenient for me to write lengthy posts. however! i'm back in the swing of things and im too excited to let it sit here any longer.

long post under the cut!

to start off, i wanna make it clear that what i do currently is write english-language subtitles for english-language content on YouTube! there is no translation involved. i'm not confident enough with any other languages to sub any other kind of content. so all the advice i can offer is gonna be related to my specific experience! (i'm learning that maybe i should have used the word "captions" instead of subtitles to eliminate confusion. you can tell i am an amateur and not a professional since i thought the words were largely interchangeable)

i started doing captions for fun several years ago as a fan of The Shrieking Wizard Co! that company/channel had an associated discord server, and there was a section for fans to submit captions for their videos using a service called Crowdscriber. i was not super good at it or familiar with any of the best practices at the time, but i could make out even overlapping voices pretty well and i had a lot of free time!

the SWC is no longer around as a company, but even before that i'd fallen off of doing captions for them since school started to eat up all my free hours again. recently, though, i picked the habit back up and started doing captions for a niche machinima series that a friend got me to watch! the first episode and a half already had captions, so i was dismayed when i realized the rest of the series lacked them. in a sort-of special feature video from a couple years back, the creator mentioned plans to enable community captions so fans could pitch in if they wanted! however, since then, YouTube has removed the community captions feature.* but the creator is still active and the series is still ongoing, and i figured i probably had the tools available to me to caption the episodes on my own. i reached out to ask if he'd like the help, and he said yes! so wahoo!

a lot of creators would probably be happy to accept volunteers to help them with captions. some larger creators may even be open to offering someone a paid job at it. the worst they can do is say no or not respond, so there's really no reason to be afraid of reaching out about subtitling one or more videos that mean a lot to you! sadly, this is not going to be as reliable for older stuff on abandoned channels. you may have the resources you need to subtitle something but no way to reach out to the creator so that your subtitle files can be uploaded and seen.

the first step of my process was to download all the episodes of the series that i wanted to caption! it's also fine to go one at a time if you lack the storage space, of course. i used VLC to download YouTube videos (check out this tutorial! it wasn't what i used at the time, but i think the one i did use is out of date and your odds with this one might be better!), but i know there are other reliable options out there.

YouTube's built-in caption/subtitle editor is pretty ass and not fun to work with! i find it frustratingly limiting. luckily, there are free programs which do it better. i've got decent experience editing videos, so the free version of the program DaVinci Resolve is my subtitle editor of choice since it feels very much the same as editing videos like i'm used to. i'd open it up and take some screenshots to show off the process, but my PC is currently not functioning. i will say that i found it pretty easy to muddle through after a couple basic "how to add subtitles in DaVinci Resolve" tutorials.

i still don't know if i'm the best person to give lessons on best practices for captioning, but here are some very basic guidelines i try to adhere to:

don't let captions take up more than two lines on screen at their standard size! three or more lines of captions cover a lot of what's happening on screen. there are times when it might be absolutely necessary because characters' lines are overlapping while other sounds are also occurring which are crucial to the viewer's understanding of the scene, and that's okay, but 3+ lines of captions should really be a rarity.

generally try to have one sentence on screen at a time! there are plenty of exceptions to this. for example, a character may utter several short sentences in a short amount of time (eg. "Yes. Okay. I understand.") which don't make sense to break up any further because the captions would be flashing on screen for such a short time, impeding readability. moreover, a character might say a sentence that needs to be broken up at a logical midpoint so it doesn't take up three or more lines on the screen.

preserve comedic and dramatic timing. sometimes the above rule must be sacrificed so that the punchline of a joke or the narrative twist of the knife is not revealed before it's supposed to be revealed.

sounds that characters acknowledge and react to, or which impact your understanding of the scene, should be represented with a caption. the audience probably needs to know about [distant gunfire] and [pained scream]. however, in a lot of cases, a sound is implied by what the audience can see or is unnecessary to their understanding of the scene. the audience probably does not need to be told that the door which they can see opening is making the sound that a door makes when it is opened. the audience can probably infer that the character who they can see walking is making audible footsteps. but then there are times when these sounds might be important because the characters comment on or react to them. it's situational. i say use your best judgment.

generally, above all, be courteous and remember that subtitles are a tool, and they're not something silly with. it's really not the place for jokes. it's more clear and useful when a gasp is captioned as [gasp] as opposed to [O_O] or [le terrified gasp]. it's more clear and useful to describe the sound of an airhorn as [airhorn] than to write [HOOONK!!!]. and please don't use captions for extensive easter eggs and inside jokes. like alt text, it's not a place to hide treats for people who click a secret button. it's an accessibility tool. (i'm pretty serious and passionate about this point, and i don't wanna see jokes about it in the reblogs or replies.)

if you can understand and transcribe what's being said, you Must do so accurately. this includes swear words. this includes slurs and disrespectful language and words and subject matters you're uncomfortable with. if you can't bear to type these things out, you're not the person who should be writing captions for this particular piece of media. if a hearing viewer can hear it, it must be captioned. deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers deserve to know exactly what is being said.

this page might be able to help you get started with some more specific professional guidelines! i disagree with some of these; for example, subtitling a foreign language as [speaking French] is really not ideal, because a hearing viewer who speaks French would be able to understand what was said, so you're giving the folks using the captions an incomplete experience. like i said above, if you can understand what's being said, transcribe it accurately.

YouTube accepts at least a few different file formats, including .sbv and .srt (if you're saving as an .srt from DaVinci Resolve, make sure to check ".srt Without Formatting"). proofread your work before sending it out/uploading it to catch surface errors! in fact, i recommend checking the captions in YouTube's subtitle editor by uploading them on a private video to see whether it throws up any errors at you or has any unintended formatting junk that you need to go back and eliminate.

i hope this was somewhat helpful and can maybe inspire you to go for it yourself! this mostly felt like me rambling about my personal experiences and opinions, haha. at the very least, if this didn't make any sense, maybe you can look at it and go "well if she's this incoherent and can still write captions/subtitles then certainly there's hope for me" lol. thanks for inviting me to talk about the thing i'm passionate about. it's a joy whenever someone asks me about this. i hope to get to do it as a job someday (though i'm not looking forward to when i inevitably have to caption somebody as [speaks Spanish] due to professional practices).

*i have heard from one or two folks that YouTube's now inviting viewers to contribute captions in a different way, by "providing corrections" to a video's auto-generated captions! even if this is true, i have to say it doesn't really excite me. in my opinion, trying to work around the automatic first pass is usually a worse experience than starting from scratch. the auto-generated timings tend to be really bad, usually not cutting naturally at the beginnings and ends of sentences, and that's ignoring the fact that auto-generated captions also censor swears and transcribe many things incorrectly. YouTube really should never have removed community captions. i hope they get brought back or replaced in a meaningful way

Hi I guess this is my 2 cents on your save file wip:

Usually when I do my own renovation I would limit the packs to just the ones that's related to the world I'm building on (base game + get together if it's on Windenburg) plus essential packs that most people will likely have (Seasons & Pets & free stuff), but definitely won't use the whole catalog of every packs I own in each world.

So, say if a person doesn't have the vampires pack, then they'd be safe when playing with other worlds that they do have access to because all the vampires content are confined to Forgotten Hollow. It will be rather limiting but from my experience it did give me some room to experiment with stuff I won't usually use :)

This is a very good approach! I considered doing this, but since I'm only renovating 1 base game world in the file, I don't want to limit myself to certain objects and not be able to capture the vision I'm going for.

So for anyone who's interested, I've decided to use free CC (where necessary, mainly build CC) to build my lots, instead of doing a bunch of CC-free TOOL magic with a million packs/kits (how I'm used to building). That way I can limit packs to ones with major functionality, instead of having 83,082 kits required because I wanted to use a few plants

Currently I know I'll be using Seasons, City Living, GTW (retail), Dine Out (restaurant), Eco Lifestyle (community space) and Get Together (cafe). *maybe* High School Years if I find the energy to build a school

I'm also using Zerbu's Venue Changes Mod and Spawn Refresh, which allow multi-purpose lots (it is revolutionary), so if people don't have the packs that belong to those lot types, they can still use the lots as libraries/museum, parks, lounges/bars or something else functional!

All the CC/mods needed will be linked in the post when the file's done. And any debug world decorations from other packs I'll make BGC (after all it's just set dressing). My reasoning is that since it's a save file, only PC players can use it anyway: so everyone who uses the save can download CC. But someone who only has the base game can still have 99% of the lots completely furnished and playable, they just have to switch the lot type!

also a sidenote: we're in willow creek now 😎 bc it has more lots than newcrest

and i learned how to edit strings/world maps, so 'Crest Harbor' (working title, don't really like it; suggestions welcome) will have its own special map & loading screen (this screenshot is unedited, i desaturated the BG map as a test).

'Crest Harbor' is also it's own world (though on the loading screen it's icon is identical to Willow Creek, unless i can figure out how to change it, since it's a clone made with Zerbu's Copy Worlds mod)

Pool! Like, as in billiards! Super random but it's fun and I've gotten a lot better over the past couple years!

Pretty much any hobby ever! Soap making, candle making, baking, embroidery, hand sewing, cosmetic making, jewelry making, singing, makeup, playing instruments, I just love to do it all.

finally putting an end to my nonsense and have started taking this seriously! wahoo! this is going to be a less formal 100 days of productivity in which im obviously striving to be productive but i won't be too hard on myself if im not and also im not really counting days or anything you get the picture

today i went to the library in between classes and rewrote some notes I've been putting off for like a week. when i got home my first order of business was to fill out some calendar and scheduling templates by @emmastudies ! it took forever because i don't have a printer so i ended up busting out my old drawing tablet to hook up to my pc—relearning how to write with it was horrible, and eventually i just gave up despite how bad and messy it looked :/ i think as i continue to use it i'll get better at writing and finding things to fill space with (that are still important and whatever, you know how it goes)

also peep the notes! i haven't handwritten notes in a long time but i think they're ok! mostly! i'm not unhappy with them! i definitely think i used to be better at it, lol. please ignore my shaky handwriting and what will probably be a dozen more attempts at color schemes organization etc until i have an end product i'm happy with. and when i finally take the time to color correct my photos it'll be so over for all of you i swear

i unfortunately was not the most productive today—i spent most of my time procrastinating by doing this smh—and only managed to get through about a third of all the textbook readings i needed to, so i'll rearrange my weekly schedule to accommodate for that! if i'm being honest i think i forced too much stuff into each day without really thinking about how long each task would actually take to do, so i'm going to spend tomorrow morning post- 8am anatomy lab thinking about the most efficient way to spread out my tasks and cut up my time to get through everything. really hoping i still have my weekend free to relax, but it's too early to tell. here's to hoping i can wake up in time for class tomorrow :')

My Dnd Campaigns!

This is mostly for organization in my blog! Tags are named as follows: hexiflexi + abbreviation

The Losers Squad (LS) - My first every campaign! Set in a modern-day city, about the size of Barcelona, called Bchebol (pronounced cheh-BOWL). The PCs are Whiplash, a cocky air genasi dead-set on proving his acting skills; illiterate Levia, a water genasi with slightly murderous tendencies; Fother Little, a halfling with alchoholic tendencies and way too much money; and Bingus Flimmerman, a human man who loves his pickup truck Betsy and keeps the group together. The four of them go on adventures that are accidentally set up by their dreary acting agent, Wally Wilvalor, which usually involve silly deities, game shows, and Walt-Disney-stand-in Chuck Chadstone.

Eclipsea and the Wild Waters (EWW) - Eclipsea and Iska, two countries separated by the deadly Wild Waters, are at war. The story begins in a coastal city called Pearcha when a terrorist organization attacked during the rice festival. The characters of Albus Yorkwood, an illiterate, beefy former-model who is running from his father; Sora Kildaar, a shy dragonborn whose only dream is to live a free life; and Eilo (REDACTED), a frankly scary loner, join together to figure out how and why it happened. So far, they've had horrific encounters with their parents, discovered an ancient key with a connection to the wild waters, and made their way to Iska by sneaking past border control.

The 20 Celebrations of Inkiawiki (20CI) - The world of 20CI is split into two sides by the Senda Mountains, the west based on pre-colonial Peru, and the east on Croatia. The campaign started as two, half of it starting in a fishing town recently troubled with a plague that killed their fish (run by @ramenbowl234), and the other half by myself, with PCs tasked with going to heal the princess from the capital, Cuscanga. Each party made their way to the to the big city, and upon arriving, learned of the wedding between Prince Intiawiki and Basia Muri that would be happening in 4 days. Together, they were able to discover the truth that Basia was some sort of mushroom woman who aimed to kill/brainwash the population and defeated her.

Planet 36 (P36) - In a galaxy far, far away (lol) are three solar systems, called the Adastria System, the Lyra System, and the Red Ribbon respectively. Each have a few planets, which have sentient life and advanced technology by our standards. Space travel is common, and there are a total of 17 homebrew races, 5 of which were made by the players for their PCs. The story begins when a group of spaceships, transporting Michua Gata, a Gatan (tree person) who wants to find allies to free their people; Kelmykaless “Fry” Pelwiid, a Meshling (algae-shaped mesh-worm) who is trying to live up to his captain's leadership skills while he's gone; Aeris Cosmara, a Neridrake (dragon) who wants to learn; Paws Ta, a Raybi (can literally look like anything) who is terrified of space but wants to find their missing sister; and Pinky the Splendid, a Plungerian (a metal/rock creature) who was part of a delivery team but is also very interested in the galactic government, respectively, crash land on a mysterious planet. Upon arrival, Fry and Pinky discover most of their crew missing. Surviving off of the resources aboard their ship, they manage to make contact with Paws' sister's ship, a former member of said ship, the rest of Pinky's crew, and a large monster living under the planet's surface.

The Sun Conspiracy (TSC) - In the farmlands outside of Osali, in a district called Armurb, is a family's agricultural commune found by Mama Augusta, a water genasi who is 112 years old. The commune spans 4 generations and is quite happy living a simple life. The PCs are planned to be in charge of a delivery during the first session, and when they return, a very strange situation has occurred...

I'm Married & Still Have Husbando's

There is nothing wrong with it I wanted to address this question I have been asked.

So I have had several people ask me how I play so many otome games and write half of what I do on tumblr but am married. Well I figured mine as well put it out there. So my husband plays alot of games like the witcher as well as cyberpunk and more. These games have a very sexual base to them whether sex sounds, or visual the point being this has been getting worse and worse in video games men play. My husband doesn't per say play these games for this reason but they are still there. That being said me and him talked about it and there is no different than me dating how many ever guys in my 2d world especially since most times they are dressed. Occasionally the sexual and spicy things but again ain't no worse than what is on most gamer guys pcs/xbox/ps5.

Anyways outside of that comes the point of how I write smut as well as things that most single people might right about how hot characters are and everything. Tumblr is my little piece of heaven it lets me get out all thats in my head. My husband does not follow my tumblr and we agreed this would almost be like my journal I guess except I get to share it with everyone I don't know in my personal life. No one that lives near me has access or even knows about my tumblr and I'm happy it being that way. This way I can freely express myself with no repercussion. This is I guess so to say my safe space. I have fun and have enjoyed meeting so many of your wonderful people that I have stuff in common with me. Anyone is free to write anything on my posts it can be weird to some and I'm open to it come on most of us have a twisted thought here and there with half the mess anime has in it. Look at all the ones who love yanderes, I'm not per say one of them but I love talk to people about stuff just the same.

I'm older than most otome players and I'm ok with that because so far most the girls I have talked to really don't care about my age. I'm thankful for that because honestly we can all be friends and its always nice to meet people with the same likes as you. I have tried to talk to people in my everyday life about anime and otome and most drown me out in minutes. Especially when I talk about this guy or that guy I'm dating LOL. Anyways I just thought I would answer the hidden question I've been asked. I say to anyone who is in a relationship, is older, has a husband, has kids or anything else you should be able to enjoy anime and otome as much as the next person. Honestly ladies we all know the men in our otome are more affectionate more often, dote on our every whim, super romantic, and perfect in our dreams, fantasies etc. The point being is no man will ever be everything we get with our 2D husbandos and its not like we are leaving our partners for them so live life, enjoy a husbando or two as well.

I'm thinking you're either at comic con or getting ready to go, either way I hope you have a lot of fun and that it takes your mind off of things, because you deserve to have a lil break. I'm so glad you got to surprise your friend with something spontaneous, but I'm sad you had to call off something else due to work. I hope you have fun in Wales, I've never been to a convention or comic con or anything like that yet, I really want to go. We have something called Supernova here (not sure if its anywhere else) and its pretty much comic con but legally distinct haha. I know it must of been hard on the 8th of Oct, it sounded really beautiful the way you spent it though, with all his favourite things. I absolutely love Monty Pythons too, its how my dad and I bond too, constantly making Holy Grail references and everything. I'm really glad you've started counselling too, I hope its going well, it can be really useful. You've been doing really well recently even if you think you haven't, things have been intense and its understandable to feel stressed or overwhelmed, but you're taking the right steps to help you out.

I've finished with the band stuff, had my last gig on the 11th. It went fine, but turned into a single launch last minute which was weird but didn't change much lol. I realise I never told you the band's name, or maybe I did but any its Billy Puntton and the Mental Health Plan, its a mouthful lol. We had a few songs out now on Spotify and youtube. I'm both glad its over and not, it was the only thing I kinda had going, but it wasn't something I liked in the end so its a weird feeling but at the same time I do feel like a weight is off my shoulders, I don't have to worry about it and spending so much money going into the city for practices and gigs, cause it would cost so much.

I'm near the end of my health stuff, blood work was all fine, and now I'm going in for surgery on the 21st, a couple days before my birthday. This will be a small surgery to take a piece, like a wedge, out of my first rib near my sternum to free up some space for my vein and artery to sit, which should fix outlet syndrome. It will be a day surgery too so I shouldn't be in for very long, maybe a day for observations. Then hopefully I can get on with my life haha. Its been just waiting and not being able to do anything, and more waiting recently and its driving me insane. I should be able to get training early next year for a new job and that should help too. I'm not going to make any promises but I hope to get back to streaming soon, hopefully after surgery but it should be around 9-10pm start. I have done some more upgrading and have finished my pc for hopefully a few years haha.

I haven't had much else going I'm afraid so this isn't a very long post. But I hope to have more to say next time. I hope you're doing well N.

Hello Steph! How are you? Any plans for this summer? So. The other day I discovered Sherlockbbc-fic on LJ. I love fanfics and most of all I love collecting them on my pc. So I was thinking "damn, I'm free this summer. What if I save some intriguing fics from over there?". So I think I'll use the method you talked about days ago, the copy -paste on Google doc. Do you think this is the best way to do it? And what about the formatting of the page? The fics fills on LJ haven't that much of formatting...

Ah, I'm alright. Feeling SO much more like myself now that there's sunshine and my SAD has subsided for the time being. Just looking forward to spending a lot of my summer outside again and trying to get myself back to FEELING better, you know? My mind is slowly getting better with therapy and sunshine, and now I'm looking forward to my distance walking, which I LOVE doing (I'm talking like 20 KM on the weekends). Need new shoes though, LOL.

Ah, plans for summer SO FAR is going to see my sister who I haven't seen in over 5 years because of work and the pandemic. I miss her terribly and very much looking forward to spending a week with her and her husband. AND I'm thinking of taking August off of Tumblr so I can catch up and finish my FTH pieces, and just... not feel obligated to post daily. I usually take some time off in August because it's my birthday month, but I'll see.

Thanks for thinking of my tutorial for finding a method to make your own ePubs, LOL <3 Ah, yeah, by formatting I meant just, like, line breaks and basic bolding of chapter titles, etc. Basically making it so YOU personally can comfortably read it. Google Docs works almost exactly like MS Word, so you can make it look all pretty and nice, hahah. Like, some people put weird spacing in stories, or like if you're copying from FFNet or livejournal, it's also going to copy-over avatars and maybe some hidden content that you'll want to delete before making it something you'll want to read :) That's all :)

PERSONALLY, probably not the BEST way to do it, but as someone who is very particular and picky and I LIKE the strange monotony of cleaning up files, I wouldn't mind doing it as something mindless to do while watching a movie.

So yeah, it's more all a personal thing. Try a few before committing, and maybe you'll come up with a faster, better method! :) I mean, look at my blog, I have a streamlined method to quickly find and rec fics these days because of the initial monotony I spent doing all of that, LOL.

craft room update under the cut!

I've been struggling with keeping my craft room/wfh office clean for years ever since i moved into my house. Not only am I messy, a given for a free spirit like myself, but I'm also working on multiple projects at a time that cannot be put away or else they will be forgotten, also typical of free spirits. I also dislike commitment such as putting giant nail or screw holes in the walls for shelving and storage, which would have helped with keeping things organized or at least off the floor so I can vacuum up all the threads and dust.

A short while ago I moved the futon sofa bed out to my bedroom (not that it really fit there either) because the futon looked ugly and was gathering messes and dust and I never used it for its purpose. The futon now is a gathering place for pillows and plushies but sometimes I do sit on it to work on my journal or read a bit. So that's a slight improvement than no use at all. And I put a sheet over it so it's cute now.

With the biggest space-waster out of the way, I moved furniture around to make the best use of light from the window and recently purchased a cheap plastic Ikea shelf to hold lightweight bins and such. The aesthetics and feng shui are not perfect, but with determination, I was able to rehome almost all of my art supplies and boxes of projects off the floor where they had been preventing me from vacuuming and reaching the closet door. There are still a couple of trays of miscellaneous junk to sort through and I would like a better place for my recently obtained embroidery supply baskets, but that should be easy to resolve tomorrow. It better be.

The next biggest change was taking all of my booth/table stuff from a giant tupperware and consolidating the merch and signage on a small shelf since I doubt I will sell at a market or artist alley anytime soon. (Maybe at my retirement, but I don't think society will exist in 20 years, or not a society that will be buying my art anyway.) That freed up a lot of floor space as well. The other giant tupperware holds my wigs and I don't have a place for it in the stuffed cosplay closet, so it will just be hanging out in the center of the room as a mini table surface as usual. I also moved my photos and letters to my bedroom closet as they are not technically office or art supplies.

I pulled out some artsy or fashion postcards and stickers to decorate, labeled a few drawers, and placed vases of fake flowers around to help it look prettier as well instead of just utilitarian. Actually the flowers were from my previous PC desk setups, I never even put them away, lol.

The last few things on my list - add a cute curtain, find a home for the last few baskets I already mentioned and add more artwork to the wall as inspirations. And maybe hang up one small decorative shelf... if I can make that commitment lol. Anyway, I'm really happy that I finally pulled through and finished tidying up, you know, after years of being stressed out by my mess and unable to find anything and buying multiples I didn't need lmao. Now I'm excited to finish my sewing projects and work on new stuff, and I smile when I look at the semi-organized bins and rainbow colors of fabrics and flowers. Gotta celebrate the small wins in this evil and miserable world!

Dragon Age development insights and highlights from Bioware: Stories and Secrets from 25 Years of Game Development

Dragon Age: Origins

The continent of Thedas was at one point going to be named Pelledia, a name initially floated by James Ohlen

“Qunari” was a temporary name that ended up unintentionally sticking, much like “Thedas”

Mary Kirby wrote the Landsmeet. To this day, nobody understands how it works, except possibly her. If she’s “really really drunk” she can explain how it works. There’s as many words in it as Sten’s entire conversations put together

Concept art for Thedosian art - as in in-world art - draws heavily on Renaissance-era portraiture, the Art Nouveau movement, religious styles and media like stained glass, and favorite pieces from the golden age of illustrations in the early 20th century

Andrastianism in-world (art-wise) is depicted in wildly different methods depending on who in-world made the art in question. “One religion, 3 different lenses”. There’s the Chantry take, the Orlesian take and the Fereldan take; each with its own different interpretations, different mediums and different stories

The stained glass images were drawn by Nick Thornborrow for DAI, to decorate religious spaces in that game “and beyond”

The book also had other insights into and anecdotes from the development of DAO, but I’ve transcribed them recently as they’re essentially the stories DG has recently been relating on the awesome Summerfall Studios DAO playthrough Twitch streams. (On those streams he provides dev commentary while Liam Esler plays through DA. The ones with DG are currently once every two weeks. Check them out! Here’s a calendar where you can check when the next one is) Instead of repeating myself I’ll just provide the link to the first transcript. From there you can navigate to the subsequent parts. Note these streams are ongoing. At this point I will also point you to a related post which is cliff notes of the Dragon Age chapter in Jason Schreier’s book Blood Sweat and Pixels.

Dragon Age II

DAO had the longest development period in BioWare history. In contrast DA2 had the shortest

Initially DA2 was going to be an expansion to DAO. A few months in EA said “Yeah, expansions like these don’t sell very well, so let’s make it a sequel.” So it suddenly became DA2 and they had to make it even bigger, although they still only had 1.5 years of time in which to do this

Production of DA2 officially lasted only 9 months, and at the time the team was still supporting live content for DAO! They finished development that January after the design team crunched all the way through the holiday period that year. Then it went to cert 9 times

The limited time they had is why the story takes place mostly in and around 1 city, and over 7 years (so it was temporal, rather than over physical distance, because a more expansive world would have taken more irl time to make)

They had no time to review even the main plot. Mike Laidlaw pitched the idea of 3 stories taking place at different points in the PC’s life, tied together by Varric’s recollections of events. DG rolled with this and made 1 presentation on the idea. This presentation was then approved and off they went

As they were writing DG realized that there was going to be no oversight and that everything was going to be a ‘first draft’. “Because nobody had time.” He sat down with the writers and said “Look, here’s the conditions we’re working under. A lot of what we’re putting out is gonna be raw. We’re not going to get the editing we need. We’re not going to get the kind of iteration we need. So I’m going to trust you all to do your best work.”

Looking back, DG has mixed feelings on DA2. “A lot of corners were cut. The public perception was that it was smaller than DAO. That’s a sin on its own.”

Despite this he thinks DA2 has some of the best writing in the series, especially character-wise. The DA2 chars are his favorite

The pace with which production progressed may in some ways have helped. “When we do a lot of revision, we often file away [as in buff off] some of the good writing as well. Somehow DA2′s whirlwind process resulted in some really good writing”

The pace meant chars landed on the writers in various stages of completion. For example Isabela was fairly defined due to appearing in DAO. In contrast Varric at the start was just that single piece of widely-shown concept art

Varric was conceived as a storyteller not a fighter. His skills are talking and bullshitting. Hence the question became, so what does this guy do in combat? The direction was to make him as different as possible to Oghren, so not a warrior. He couldn’t be a dual-wielding rogue in order to differentiate him from Bela. But you can’t really picture this guy with a bow. “For a dwarf, it would probably be a crossbow. We didn’t have crossbows, or we only had crossbows for the darkspawn. And they were part of the models. We didn’t have a separate crossbow that was equip-able by the chars. They had to like, crop one off a darkspawn and remodel it. And that became Bianca” (quote: Mary Kirby)

“Dwarven mages are exceedingly rare.” [???]

If DAO was a classic fantasy painting, DA2 was a screenshot from a Kurosawa film or a northern Renaissance painting. (Here Matt Rhodes was commenting on art style)

John Epler: “In any one of our games, there’s a 95% chance that if you turn the camera away from what it’s looking at, you’ll see all kinds of janky stuff. The moment we know the camera is no longer facing someone, we no longer care what happens to them. We will teleport people around. We will jump people around. We will literally have someone walk off screen and then we will shift them 1000 meters down, because we’re fixing some bug.” John also talked about this camera stuff in a recent charity Twitch stream for Gamers For Groceries. There’s a writeup of that stream here

Designing Kirkwall pushed concept artists to the limits of visual storytelling, because it has a long history that they wanted to be present. It was once the hub of Tevinter’s slave empire, so it needed to look brutal and harsh, but it also then needed to feel reclaimed, evolved, and with elements of contemporary Free Marches culture

The initial plan was for DA titles to be distinguished by subtitles not numbers, so that each experience could stand on its own rather than feel like a sequel or continuation. (My note: New PCs in each entry make sense then when you consider this and other factoids we know like how DA is the story of the world not of any one PC). Later, DA2′s name was made DA2 in a bid to more clearly connect the game to its predecessor. For DAI they returned to the original naming convention. (My note: so I’d reckon they’d be continuing the subtitle naming convention for DA4)

DA2 was initially code-named “Nug Storm”, strictly internally

The Cancelled DA2 Expansion - Exalted March

This was a precursor to DAI

It was meant to bridge the gap between DA2 and DAI

It focused on the fallout from Kirkwall’s explosion, with Cory serving as the villain

Meredith’s red lyrium statue was basically going to infest Kirkwall and it would end up [with what would end up] the red templars taking over Kirkwall and essentially being Cory’s army

To stop him Hawke would have recruited various factions, including Bela’s Felicisima Armada and the Qunari at Estwatch, forcing Hawke to split loyalties and risk relationships in the process

It was meant to bring DA2′s story to an end and end in Varric’s death. DG was very happy with this because all of DA2 is Varric’s tale. The expansion was supposed to start at the moment Cassandra’s interrogation of him ended in the present. “And we finished off the story with Varric having this heroic death.” It tied things up and would have broken many fan hearts, something BioWare writers notoriously enjoy. But between a transition to the new Frostbite engine and the scope of DAI, the decision was made to cancel EM, work any hard-to-lose concepts into DAI, and in the process save Varric’s life. DG has talked about the Varric dying thing before

Concept art for EM explored new areas previously not depicted in the DA universe, with costumes that reflected next steps for familiar chars. Varric was going to war, what would he have worn? With Anders, if he survived DA2, the plan was to present a redeemed Warden

A char that vaguely resembled Sera in DAI was first concepted for EM. This fact was mentioned near this concept art (see the female elf) and this concept art of Bethany with the blond bob

The writers sketched out plans to end it with Hawke having the option to marry their LI. This included alternate ceremonies for party members like Bethany and Sebastian if the player opted not to wed. There was even a wedding dress made for Hawke. This asset made it into DAI (Sera and Cullen’s weddings in Trespasser). The dress can also be seen in DAI during an ambient NPC wedding after completing a chain of war table missions

The destruction of a Chantry was explored in concept art as it might have happened in EM. This idea ended up carrying over to the beginning of DAI. (My note: Lol, the idea that DA2 could have had 2 Chantries being destroyed in it 😆)

World of Thedas

Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby started with “a disgusting little dish called fluffy mackerel pudding”. In the middle of DAO’s busy dev period one of them (they can’t remember who) found a recipe online for this, scanned in from a 70s cookbook. “I don’t understand why it was fluffy. Why would you want fluffy mackerel pudding?” MK says. “We loved it so much we included it in a DAO codex.”

This led them to create more food for Thedas, full recipes included, like a Fereldan turnip and barley stew from MK and SC’s Starkhaven fish and egg pie. The fish pie became Sebastian’s favorite. “To me it made sense for it to be fish pie because a lot of the Free Marches are on the coast”, SC says, “It was something that was popular in medieval times, so I thought, let’s make a fish pie! I looked at medieval recipes and I concocted a fish pie which I fed to my partner, and he was like ‘This is not terrible’”

For WoT the whole studio was asked to contribute family recipes which might have a place in Thedas. SC adapted these to fit in one Thedosian culture or another, including a beloved banana bread that localization producer Melanie Fleming would regularly bake to keep the DA team motivated. “Melanie’s banana bread got us through Inquisition”

DAI

It says part of DAI takes place in or near the border with Nevarra [???]

This game was aimed to be bigger than DA2 and even DAO in every conceivable way

The first hour had to do a lot of heavy lifting, tying together the events of DAO and DA2 while introducing a new PC, new followers etc in the aftermath of the big attack. DG rewrote it 7 times then Lukas Kristjanson did 2 more passes

DG: “Our problem is always that our endings are so important, but we leave them to last, when we have no time. I kept pushing on DAI: ‘Can we work on the ending now? Can we work on the ending now? Can we do it early on?’ Because I knew exactly what it was going to be. But despite the fact that it kept getting scheduled, whenever the schedule started falling behind, it kept getting pushed back... so, of course, it got left til last again.”

“The reveal of the story’s real antagonist, Solas, a follower until the end, when he betrayed the player”. “Solas’ story remains a main thread in Inquisition’s long-awaited follow-up” [these aren’t DG quotes, just bits of general text]

Over the course of development they had 8 full-time writers and 4 editors working on it. Other writers joined later to help wrangle what ended up being close to 1 million words of dialogue and unspoken text. While many teams moved to a more open concept style of work for DAI, the writers remained tucked away in their own room, a choice DG says was necessary, given how much they talked. All the talking had a purpose ofc as if someone hit a bump or wall in their writing they would open the problem up to the room

As writing on a project like DAI progresses, the writers grow punchier and weirder things make it into the game. This is especially the case towards the end of a project (they get tired, burned out)

Banter and codexes require less ‘buy-in’ (DG has talked about this concept a few times on the Twitch streams) from other designers. DG liked to leave banter for last as a reward because it was fun. Banter begins as lists of topics for 2 followers to discuss. These may progress over time or be one off exchanges. One banter script can balloon to well over 10k words. “The banter was always huge because we were always like, laughing, and really at that point, our fields of fucks were rather barren, so we would just do whatever”

The bog unicorn happened pretty much by accident. It was designed by Matt Rhodes and was one of his fav things to design. They needed horse variations and he had already designed an undead variant which was a bog mummy [bog body]. irl these are preserved in a much different way to traditional mummies. When someone dies in a bog their skin turns black and raisin-like. The examples we know of tend to have bright red hair for whatever reason. It’s a very striking look and MR wanted to do a horse version of this as he thought it’d be neat. 5 mins before the review meeting for it he had a big ‘Aha!’ moment, quickly looked up a rusty old Viking sword, and photoshopped it through its skull like that was how it died. “And I was like, ‘I just made a unicorn. Alright, in it goes!’” It got approved. “So we built the thing. It fit. It told a little story”

With the irl Inquisition longsword, one of the objects they tested its cleaving ability on was a plush version of Leliana’s nug Schmooples

The concept art team explored a wide variety of visuals for the Inquisitor’s signature mark. It needed to look powerful and raw but couldn’t look like a horrific wound. In some cases, as cool as the idea looked on paper, they just weren’t technically feasible, especially as they had to be able to fit on any number of different bodies

Bug report: “Endlessly spawning mounts! At one point during development, Inquisitors could summon a new horse every time they whistled, allowing them to amass a near infinite number of eager steeds that faithfully followed them across Thedas. “You could go charging across levels and they’d all gallop behind you,” Jen Cheverie says, “It was beautiful.” Trotting into town became an epic horse siege as a tidal wave of mounts enveloped the streets. Jen called it her Army of Ponies”

The giants came from DA Week, an internal period when devs can pursue different individual creative projects that in some way benefit DA. They also had a board game from one of these that they were going to put in but they didn’t have time. It’s referenced though. It was dwarven chess

Josie’s outfit is made of gold silk and patterned velvet, with leather at her waist. She carries “an ornate ledger” and she has “an ornamented collar sitting around her neck, finished by a brilliant red ruby, like a drop of Antivan wine in a sunbeam”

Iron Bull’s armor is leather. His loose pantaloons and leather boots give him agility to charge

On DAI in particular, concept artists took special care to make sure costumes would be realistic, at least in a practical ‘this obeys the laws of physics and textiles’ sense. “While on Inquisition, we thought about cosplay from a concept art perspective. Given how incredible a lot of [cosplays] are, I now am not worried about them. In fact in some cases in the future I want to throw them curveballs like, ‘All right, you clever bastards. Let’s see if you can do this!’”

2 geese that nested on the office building and had chicks were named Ganders and Arishonk (it wasn’t known who was the mom or the dad). Other possible names were Carver Honke, Bethany Honke, Urdnot Pecks, Quackwall, Cassandra Pentagoose, the Iron Bill, Shepbird, Garroose, Admiral Quackett, Scout Honking, HChick-47 and Darth Malgoose

Bug report: “The surprising adventures of Ser Noodles!” DAI was the first time the series had a mount feature, meaning this had a lot of bugs. A lot of the teams’ favorite bugs were to do with the mounts. There was a period of time where the Inquisitor’s horse seemed to lose all bone and muscle in its legs. They had a week or so where all quadruped legs were broken. It was a bit noticeable in things like nugs and other small beasties but the horse was insanely obvious. “The first time we summoned the horse [for this] and started running around, the entire QA exploration room just exploded with laughter.” Its legs flapped around like cooked fettucine, leading testers to lovingly nickname it Ser Noodles. At galloping speeds the legs almost looked like helicopter blades, especially when footage was set to classic pieces such as Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries

For DAI the artists were asked questions like “What would Morrigan wear to a formal ball? Can Cassandra pull off a jaunty hat?”

On DAI storyboarding became the norm. John Epler: “Cinematic design for the longest time was the Wild West. It was ‘here’s a bunch of content, now do it however you want’, which resulted in some successes and some failures.” Storyboarding gave designers a consistent visual blueprint based on ideas from designers, writers and concept artists

Quote from a storyboard by Nick Thornborrow (the Inquisitor going into the party at the end of basegame sequence): “Until Corypheus revealed himself they could not see the single hand behind the chaos. A magister and a darkspawn combined. The ultimate evil. So evil. Eviler than puppy-killers and egg farts combined.”

A general note on concept art:

how do u get fo3 to run on pc . ive tried damn near everything and ur the only fo3 enjoyer i follow

my first general recommendation is to buy fo3 on GOG and not steam. Steam's version is literally so fucked on various levels, GOG's fixes a lot of the issues it has (defunct GFWL, memory space issue, plus its drm free !). Supposedly it also runs fine thru XBOX PC gamepass, if that's an option for you that youre open to trying.

now some PCs can run it just fine out the gate w/ GOG. Mine did not lol, but also my laptop is almost 6 years old saur... I'll be real, I don't even remember what I did to fix it. I was maddogging the fuck out of suggestions and googling possible answers, trying everything. Like u...

my general suggestions are :

the multicore fix ; get into Documents>Games>Fallout3 and make sure you change bUseThreadedAI=0 to bUseThreadedAI=1 and add iNumHWThreads=2 in the FalloutPrefs.ini ; it really doesn't like more than 2 threads. Running it in WinXP/7/8 SP3 compatibility mode as an Administrator may also make it work. Also install the Win10 compatibility mod on nexus. Look thru this thread for suggestions. There's a general post on the fallout subreddit of ways to get all the games to work, but I can't find it so when I do. I'll add it. I'll probably come back later to add more things I can think of. For the sake of everyone who wants to play fo3 on PC 😌

A lot of people suggest just playing it via TTW (the option is always there). I haven't personally, I played fo3 on console for years. So I wanted to solely play it unrelated to FNV also. Once I got it running, it ran perfectly fine. The only crashes I ever have are related to mods (which is why ive been too lazy to go back and fix it for a few months LMFAOO)
