Acne: Ultimate Guide to Causes, Effective Treatments, and Busting Myths
Tumblr media
Introduction Acne affects over 50 million Americans annually, making it the most common skin condition in the U.S. While often linked to adolescence, 15–30% of adults aged 20–40 also struggle with breakouts. Beyond physical symptoms, acne impacts self-esteem and mental health. This guide dives into acne’s root causes, debunks pervasive myths, and offers actionable treatments and skincare routines backed by science.
What Causes Acne? Breaking Down the Science
Acne develops when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin, and bacteria. Let’s explore the key contributors:
Hyperkeratinization:Overproduction of keratin (a skin protein) and dead skin cells block pores, creating comedones (blackheads/whiteheads).Tip: Use exfoliants like salicylic acid (BHA) 2–3 times weekly to unclog pores.
Excess Sebum Production:Hormonal changes (e.g., puberty, menstrual cycles) ramp up sebum, an oily substance that feeds acne-causing bacteria.Example: Oily skin types may benefit from niacinamide, which regulates sebum.
Bacterial Overgrowth:Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) thrives in clogged pores, releasing inflammatory fatty acids.Guideline: Benzoyl peroxide (2.5–10%) kills bacteria without antibiotic resistance.
Inflammation:The immune system’s response to C. acnes causes redness and swelling.Tip: Anti-inflammatory ingredients like zinc or green tea extract can calm skin.
Hormonal Imbalances:Androgens (male hormones present in all genders) spike sebum production. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often links to hormonal acne.Example: Birth control pills or spironolactone may help regulate hormones.
Gut Health & H. pylori:Emerging research ties gut imbalances (e.g., Helicobacter pylori infections) to severe acne. Symptoms include heartburn and bloating.Guideline: Consult a doctor for breath or stool tests if gut issues accompany acne.
Debunking 6 Common Acne Myths
Myth: “Acne is caused by dirty skin.”Truth: Over-washing strips skin’s barrier, worsening breakouts. Cleanse twice daily with a pH-balanced, fragrance-free formula.
Myth: “Only teenagers get acne.”Truth: Adult acne is rising, driven by stress, hormones, and pollution.
Myth: “Sun exposure clears acne.”Truth: UV rays temporarily reduce redness but damage skin, leading to rebound oil production. Always use non-comedogenic sunscreen.
Myth: “Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne.”Truth: No direct link exists, but high-glycemic diets (sugary snacks) may spike insulin, increasing sebum. Opt for low-glycemic foods like berries and nuts.
Myth: “Popping pimples helps them heal faster.”Truth: Picking spreads bacteria and causes scarring. Instead, apply hydrocolloid patches overnight.
Myth: “Toothpaste dries out pimples.”Truth: Toothpaste contains irritants like menthol. Use spot treatments with sulfur or tea tree oil instead.
Effective Acne Treatments: From OTC to Prescription
Topical Treatments
Retinoids (Adapalene, Tretinoin):Unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Start with adapalene 0.1% (OTC) 3x/week, gradually increasing to nightly use.Pro Tip: Apply pea-sized amounts on dry skin to minimize irritation.
Benzoyl Peroxide:Kills bacteria and reduces oil. Try a 2.5% wash for sensitive skin or 5% gel for stubborn spots.
Combination Therapy (Epiduo):Adapalene + benzoyl peroxide targets multiple causes. Studies show 80% improvement in 12 weeks.
Oral Treatments
Antibiotics (Doxycycline, Minocycline):Short-term use (3–6 months) reduces bacteria and inflammation. Pair with topical treatments to prevent resistance.
Isotretinoin (Accutane):For severe, cystic acne. Low-dose regimens (10–20mg/day) minimize side effects like dryness.
Hormonal Therapies:Spironolactone (for women) blocks androgen receptors, cutting sebum by 50–75% in 3 months.
Lifestyle & Diet
Stress Management: Cortisol spikes increase oil production. Practice yoga, meditation, or 7–9 hours of sleep nightly.
Gut Health: Prebiotics (oats, garlic) and probiotics (kefir, kimchi) support microbiome balance.
Skincare Routine Guidelines for Acne-Prone Skin
AM Routine:
Cleanse with lukewarm water and a gentle foaming cleanser.
Apply niacinamide serum to reduce oil.
Moisturize with oil-free, non-comedogenic lotion.
Finish with SPF 30+ sunscreen.
PM Routine:
Double cleanse: Start with micellar water, then a salicylic acid cleanser.
Treat with retinoids (wait 20 minutes post-cleansing).
Spot-treat with benzoyl peroxide.
Moisturize with ceramide cream.
Avoid: Heavy creams, alcohol-based toners, and physical scrubs.
When to See a Dermatologist
Seek professional help if:
OTC products fail after 8–12 weeks.
You experience painful cysts or scarring.
Acne impacts mental health.
FAQs
Q: Can drinking water clear acne? A: Hydration supports skin health but isn’t a standalone cure. Pair with topical treatments.
Q: How long does it take for acne treatments to work? A: 4–8 weeks for initial results; 3–6 months for significant improvement.
Q: Are natural remedies effective? A: Tea tree oil (5% dilution) can help mild acne, but severe cases need medical intervention.
Conclusion Acne is multifaceted, but understanding its triggers and treatments empowers you to take control. Consistency is key—stick to your routine, avoid myths, and consult a dermatologist for personalized care. Remember, clear skin is a journey, not an overnight fix.

skincare practices
skincare refers to the practice of maintaining and improving the health and appearance of your skin. this post is a guide on where to start!
having a routine (starting with simple practices)
cleanser: begin and end your day by washing your face with a gentle, sulphate-free cleanser. even if your skin feels clean, this step removes any impurities.
moisturizer: apply a fragrance-free moisturizer twice a day. hydration is crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier.
sunscreen: protect your skin from uv damage by using a mineral- or chemical-based sunscreen with at least spf 30. apply it in the morning.
skin types
there are 5 primary skin types, each with unique characteristics and needs.
normal skin is balanced and not too oily or dry. it's like the goldilocks of skin types! maintain it with a gentle routine. if your skin is generally normal, opt for a lotion. as you age, consider switching to a cream-based moisturizer for added hydration.
dry skin lacks hydration, feels tight, and may have flakiness. opt for richer moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides. for dry skin, skip lotions and go for creams or ointments. these provide more moisture and help preserve water in the skin.
oily skin produces excess oil, especially in the t-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). use lightweight, oil-free products and consider salicylic acid for acne-prone areas. if you’re prone to oiliness, choose a light gel-based moisturizer to avoid clogging pores.
combination skin is a mix of oily and dry areas. focus on balancing - light moisturizers for oily zones and richer ones for dry areas. treat your face as two zones. moisturize the dry areas and skip the oily ones. remember to look for spf 30 or higher for sun protection!
sensitive skin is prone to redness, irritation, and reaction. choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products and patch-test any new products.
common skincare mistakes
skipping sunscreen. sunscreen is non-negotiable! protect your skin from uv damage by using spf 30 or higher daily. if you live in a sunny environment, make sure to reapply before you go outside!
not cleansing before bed: properly cleanse your face before sleeping. it removes dirt, makeup, excess oil, and pollution remnants, preventing breakouts and maintaining healthy skin.
sleeping with makeup on. gross! no! remove your makeup before you go to bed to prevent clogged pores and skin irritation.
using too many products. overloading with products can overwhelm your skin, so learn how to simplify your routine. additionally, using products that are not right for your skin may have negative effects - creating more issues instead of solving them.
overusing acne products. be gentle with acne treatments. overuse can lead to dryness and irritation.
using harsh products. avoid aggressive ingredients that strip your skin. opt for gentle formulations.
remember - healthy skin starts with mindful habits.

𝐢. 𝗇𝖺𝗒𝗈𝗎𝗇𝗀'𝗌 𝗌𝗄𝗂𝗇𝖼𝖺𝗋𝖾 𝗀𝗎𝗂𝖽𝖾!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
disclamer! these tips are all from experience, they've been tried and tested by yours truly. please note that i am not a skin specialist, and if you have any major skin concerns, visit a dermatologist! always remember that you are beautiful just the way you are, and these tips are aiming to help you achieve a healthier overall lifestyle.
i. skin types: everyone's skin is different! so, the first and most important step is to find out what kind of skin you have. is it oily? is it often dry? is it sensitive to certain products? determining your skin type will aid you in finding products that work for you, making it a crucial step.
ii. drink more water: i know, you've heard it a million times! but i cannot emphasise how important it is to drink water! not just for your skin, but it benefits your overall health and well-being. dehydration can cause dryness, and oiliness- which can lead to heat boils and breakouts. drinking 2-3 litres of water every day can clear up your skin significantly!
iii. avoid oily and fried foods: health begins on the inside, so we must nourish our skin the same way! oily foods can clog your pores, and make your skin greasy. in general, processed and fried food is bad for your health as it is full of preservatives and artificial flavouring. although it is important to treat yourself from time to time, avoid eating these on a daily basis.
iv. stop touching your face: i understand how hard this might be for some of you because we end up subconsciously touching our face from time to time, but not touching your face is a crucial habit and you must train yourself to reduce the number of times you touch your face. touching your face with unwashed hands makes your skin oily and dirty. song jia revealed she only touches her face while applying basic skincare or washing her face. it seems impossible, but you can do it!
v. apply sunscreen daily: no matter what, you must include sunscreen in your skincare routine. regardless of the weather, it's important since the uv rays from the sun harm your skin, and pollutants in the air (especially in the city) can damage your skin significantly. i use neutrogena and it's super lightweight and gives your skin a glowy and clean look.
vi. weather matters: weather conditions play a big role in determining which skincare products you should be using. for example- if you live near the sea coast, you might not need to moisturise due to severe humidity, but if you live in a cold and dry country, a heavy moisturiser might be advisable! if you are interested in skincare tips for people living in tropical countries- comment!
vii. facewash usage: again, it depends on where you live. i personally live near the coast, so i end up washing my face thrice a day due to constant sweating. during winter, take a call on whether you need to use a facewash in the mornings. over-cleansing can strip your skin of natural oils, which does more harm than good. if the climate where you live is not too severe, i would recommend washing your face twice a day.
nayoung's note: hope these tips helped you! feel free to let me know how they worked in the comments.

Times like these I really wish this app had a text to speech function:
I’ve been thinking about citzenzhip a lot when it comes to the Batfamily, HEAR ME OUT.
Disclaimer: I am not part of an immigrant family so if anything I say is offensive please let me know
So Dick, Damian, and Cass, were obviously born outside the U.S, WHERE’S THE CHARACTER EXPLORATION FOR THAT?
Like Damian and Dick knew English before coming here but there are still other experiences they definitely would’ve gone through.
Damian probably hated/hates the U.S. He was raised on “you do things perfectly-good-you slip up-punishment” (that’s obviously horrible) but the U.S. and all its systems are oftentimes OVERLY complicated. Can you imagine how hard it would be to go from an abusive, perfectly, structured environment, to one that’s constantly divided over the simplest things?
Not to mention that if we’re going with the backstory of him having lived in the desert for the majority of his childhood, there’d be a massive climate change. Like he’d probably have allergies, and maybe eczema.
Can you imagine finally getting to meet your father and you breakout and nearly asphyxiate because of the air pollution. (Slight hyperbole)
Ra’s Al Ghul is a horrible, abusive man but he’s relatively environmentally conscious (still horrible and abusive)
And with Dick?
If we go off Haly’s Circus being an European traveling circus, and his mother possibly being a French-speaking Roma, we can understand why it’d be difficult for him to adapt to life at Wayne Manor.
You travel 3 hours from London and you end up in Paris. A kid who’s used to that type of learning environment would HATE the American school system. He’s sitting in an uncomfortable desk chair listening to a teacher drone on about something he will never use in his life. When he used to be taught physics, while doing a handstand on the railing of the freaking Ponte de Rialto.
Regardless of potentially having ADHD or not, he’s still fidgeting in his seat—yearning for recess. But because this is America (and likely around the early 2000’s or so) his teacher rudely points out his fidgeting and the rest of the class see the boy that looks different from them, acting differently from them as well. And Children can be cruel.
I can’t imagine the experience of being an extroverted child who is used to forming connections with children, who look different from him, BECAUSE of his talents and uniqueness, being thrust into an environment that discourages that,WHILE HE’S GRIEVING HIS PARENTS.
Also Damian and Dick are both tan/brown skinned, and they’re likely going to a rich private school without a lot of people that look like them. (Gotham Academy did not start gaining a more diverse population until Jason came around and that was the reason he wanted to go to public school[I stand by this headcanon…bcus fiction imitates life])
Not to mention the unreasonable amount of prejudice towards Arabs in this country and others. That’s a rough time for a 8-11 year old who JUST moved here and already has a disconnect with his peers due to his abuse and forced maturity.
SO, SO much I’ve said and so, so much I still haven’t. I haven’t even BEGUN to talk about Cass and how difficult it had to be to come to THIS country not being able to understand spoken language at all? She was a teenager when she met Bruce but that just makes different, not better.
Once again I am Black, so while I have experience as a minority in this country, I have no experience with being an immigrant so if I have said something offensive do NOT hesitate to let me know.
Also does this count as me writing something? Probably not huh?
@vhscity idk if you want to read my rant with horrible grammar mistakes.😭😭

🦋Maintaining a simple and clean skincare routine is essential for healthy, glowing skin. In today's world, where countless products promise miraculous results, it can be tempting to overload your routine with every new trend. However, simplicity often leads to better outcomes.
A good skincare routine is important because your skin is your body's largest organ and its first line of defense against external aggressors like pollution, bacteria, and harmful UV rays. By following a consistent regimen, you help your skin maintain its natural balance, prevent issues such as acne, dryness, and premature aging, and support its ability to repair itself.
Simplicity is key. Overloading your skin with too many products can do more harm than good. It can lead to irritation, breakouts, and a weakened skin barrier. A basic routine should include just a few essential steps: cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Cleansing removes dirt and impurities, moisturizing keeps your skin hydrated and balanced, and sunscreen protects against the damaging effects of the sun.
Keeping your routine simple makes it easier to stay consistent, which is the cornerstone of effective skincare. Your skin thrives on regular care, not on a chaotic mix of products. By sticking to a straightforward regimen, you not only save time and money but also ensure that your skin remains healthy, resilient, and radiant in the long run.

A proper skincare routine plays a crucial role in maintaining clean, exfoliated, hydrated, moisturized, and protected skin. Firstly, it helps to cleanse the skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Regular exfoliation is also essential as it sloughs off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh and radiant complexion. Hydration is key, and a good skincare routine ensures that the skin stays adequately moisturized, preventing dryness and flakiness. Moreover, using sunscreen shields the skin from harmful environmental factors like UV rays and pollution, which can cause damage and premature aging. By following a consistent skincare regimen, you can achieve healthier, glowing skin.

Clogged Pores: Heavy or non-comedogenic makeup can clog pores, leading to breakouts.
Infections: Sharing makeup or using old products can increase the risk of bacterial or fungal infections.
Toxic Ingredients: Some cosmetics may contain harmful chemicals, such as parabens, phthalates, or heavy metals, which can pose health risks with prolonged use.
Eye Health Risks: Eye makeup, especially if not applied or removed properly, can lead to infections or irritation.
Environmental Concerns: Some products contribute to environmental pollution, especially if they contain microplastics or are not biodegradable.
Dependency on Appearance: Relying heavily on makeup can affect self-esteem and body image.

Why Is Skin Protection So Important? Your skin is your body’s first line of defense against the outside world. It shields you from harmful UV rays, pollution, bacteria, and more. But without proper care, this incredible organ can become vulnerable to damage, premature aging, and even serious health conditions. 🌞
Simple Steps to Protect Your Skin:
Daily SPF is Non-Negotiable: Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days! Apply a broad-spectrum SPF every day, rain or shine, to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays, which can cause premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer.
Stay Hydrated: Hydration is key to maintaining your skin’s elasticity and glow. Drink plenty of water and use moisturizers to keep your skin soft, supple, and resilient. 💧
Cleanse Gently: Your skin goes through a lot each day, from exposure to pollutants to makeup. Use a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and impurities without stripping your skin’s natural oils. 🌸
Nourish with Antioxidants: Incorporate antioxidant-rich products like Vitamin C into your skincare routine. They help neutralize free radicals that can damage your skin and accelerate the aging process. 🍊
Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management: Your skin repairs itself while you sleep, so make sure you’re getting enough rest. Managing stress through relaxation techniques can also prevent stress-induced skin issues like breakouts and premature aging. 🛌
Lifestyle Tips for Healthy Skin:
Eat a Balanced Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins provides your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay strong and radiant. 🥑
Quit Smoking: Smoking accelerates skin aging and contributes to wrinkles. Quitting is one of the best things you can do for your skin and overall health. 🚭
Limit Alcohol: Excessive alcohol can dehydrate your skin and cause inflammation, leading to dullness and aging. Enjoy in moderation for your skin’s sake. 🍷
Your skin is more than just a surface—it’s a reflection of your overall health. Protect it, nourish it, and it will thank you by looking its best. Want to dive deeper into the importance of skin protection? Check out our full guide on Comfort Mind Body! 🌿

SKINCARE
Tumblr media
Most people have misconceptions about skincare. They think it is all about wasting time, and money and putting in a lot of effort. And some of them think skincare might contain a lot of chemicals, which can cause damage to our skin. But it is not true. In my POV, the water we drink has the chemical name of dihydrogen oxide. Is it harmful to our bodies? There are so many Vitamins and Minerals required for our body and skin which are all chemicals. Of course, some harmful chemicals can cause damage to our skin and body. Ultimately it is our job to find the right chemicals for our skin. Also, we need to know when to use, what to use, and how to use skincare products. Some say just leave the skin as it is naturally. They think it's the pride for them to leave the skin naturally. Are we leaving our body naturally without giving proper supplements to it? Our skin is part of our body, which needs proper care and supplements. Some think skincare is only for women. No, it's not like that. Men also need skin care. They also need to take care, pampering of themselves, and have self-love.
Importance of skincare:
Skincare is super important because it helps keep our skin healthy and happy. It helps to protect our skin from damage caused by environmental factors, like the sun and pollution. Plus, it can prevent breakouts, dryness, and signs of aging. Skincare can have a positive impact on our mental health too. When we take care of our skin, it can become a form of self-care and relaxation. It provides us with a moment of mindfulness and self-love, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, when our skin looks healthy and glowing it can boost our self-esteem and confidence, making us feel happier and more positive overall. So, skincare is not just about physical benefits, but also about nurturing our mental well-being. So, it is worth investing some time, money, and effort into a good skincare routine.
"Skincare is not just about looking good; it's about feeling good in your own skin."😇

Autumn Strolls with Fido: A Skin-Deep Love Story
As the leaves begin their graceful descent from the trees and the crisp breeze hints at the approaching winter, there's something inherently comforting about the arrival of autumn. It's a season that encourages us to don our coziest sweaters, indulge in pumpkin-spiced everything, and relish in the beauty of nature's transition. And amidst this tapestry of fall colors and fragrances, there's a hidden gem for your skin's well-being – dog walking.
Yes, you read that right. Taking your furry friend for a stroll during the autumn months can do wonders for your skin. So, leash up your pup and let's explore the science and beauty of these seasonal outings.
1. Embrace the Moisture:
Autumn brings cooler, less humid air. While this may make you reach for moisturizers, it's also a natural boon for your skin. The crisp air helps retain moisture, keeping your skin hydrated. As you walk your dog through parks blanketed in fallen leaves, you're also less likely to experience the excessive dryness that summer or winter can bring.
2. The Sunshine Vitamin:
Sunshine is still present in autumn, albeit milder. This means you can enjoy some vitamin D while walking your dog, which is essential for healthy skin. Vitamin D helps regulate your skin's immune system and can alleviate certain skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. Just remember to wear sunscreen even on overcast days to protect your skin from UV rays.
3. Stress Reduction:
Spending time with your dog outdoors reduces stress. Lower stress levels can lead to fewer skin issues like acne breakouts and rashes. The autumnal landscape's soothing colors and the rhythmic sound of leaves underfoot provide a natural backdrop for relaxation during your walks.
4. Exercise and Glow:
Walking your dog is an excellent form of exercise, and an active body often results in healthier skin. Physical activity increases blood flow, which carries oxygen and nutrients to skin cells, giving you that coveted post-walk glow. It also helps in flushing out toxins through sweat.
5. Air Quality Improvement:
Autumn's cooler temperatures often mean improved air quality, which is beneficial for your skin. Fewer allergens and pollutants in the air reduce the chances of skin irritation, redness, or breakouts during your outdoor adventures.
6. Skin-Beneficial Foods:
Autumn is synonymous with a bounty of skin-friendly foods. Nuts, pumpkins, apples, and other seasonal produce are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that promote healthy skin. Incorporating these into your diet after your dog walks can further enhance your skin's vitality.
7. Mental Health Matters:
Finally, the mental health benefits of dog walking are undeniable. Lower stress levels and a happier state of mind can translate into fewer stress-related skin issues, such as hives or cold sores. The act of bonding with your dog during these walks can also improve your overall well-being.
Meet Your Autumn Skin Ally: Your Dog
As you set out on your autumnal adventures with your canine companion, it's essential to prioritize your skin's health and beauty. So, don't forget to hydrate, wear sunscreen, and embrace the natural splendor of the season.
As the leaves fall around you and your faithful furry friend, relish in the fact that you're not just enjoying the wonders of autumn—you're also nurturing your skin's health. Each step you take is a reminder that sometimes, the best skin care routine is as simple as a walk in the park with your dog.

Hi guys,
Recently I have been using toners and clarifying lotions in my skincare routine and now it's been a while I can honestly say that has helped my skin out so much! Typically my skin isn't that bad but of course we all get hormonal breakouts but since using these products I feel like I get less breakouts and my oily combo skin is so much better. So today I'm gonna be sharing some favourites with you all!
Let's start off with our affordable option The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution 240ml £11.50. I am very new to using The Ordinary skincare products and this is one item I was recommended to try a lot and honestly I get why. First of all, it is incredibly affordable if you are looking for a high impact product at a low price point. This toning solution focuses on being a  mild exfoliant for improved skin radiance and visible clarity. This formula contains a studied Tasmanian Pepperberry derivative to help reduce irritation associated with acid use which makes this product very unique. Recommended to be used once a day ideally in the evening, I love how fresh this product makes my skin after a day of heavy makeup.
Next up we have one of my ultimate favourites, the Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3 for Combination/Oily Skin , £24.00 . I have been obsessed with this for a while now and honestly think it deserves more hype. In Cliniques range every skincare product has 4 versions depending on your skin type which I love because you can make it more unique to your skin type. This product is called a Clarifying Lotion rather than a toner and focuses more on being an exfoliating dermatologist-developed liquid lotion that sweeps away pollution, excess oil and dulling flakes to reveal fresher skin. Out of the 3 options I feel like this one cleans my skin the best and gives it a real deep clean. This lotion can be used twice a day and I love using it for makeup prep especially because my skin is so soft and smooth every time I use it ,making my makeup apply so much better.
Lastly we have my very luxury option which is of course Charlotte Tilbury Glow Toner , £40.00. Again this toner is quite unique compared to the previous 2 as this focuses on being a Pore-refining, acid-free hydrating toner with niacinamide for baby soft, smooth feeling skin and pores that appear reduced. It also leaves your skin with a gorgeous glow that makes your skin even more healthy looking. I love using this toner when I want my skin to have a bit more of a glow. If you have dry/ combo skin I feel like you'll enjoy this the most. Also if you have sensitive skin (always check the ingredients) you may like the fact that this toner is acid free too.
Using toners and clarifying lotions has really changed my skincare and made my complexion improve so much over the past 6-8 months. If, like me, you think your skincare routine isn't doing much, try adding a toner to your routine and see if it helps. As always all products mentioned in my blog post are linked above.
Lots of love
Bella xx
