The big differences between the pokemon anime and the yugioh animes' approach to the format is that pokemon goes to great lengths to make portray competitive battling as pleasantly as possibly: handshakes, compliments, every contestant is respectful and polite.

Meanwhile, in yugioh, you get extra points if you manage to make your opponent have a psychological breakdown mid duel.

You know tho, one of the things I really like about Horizons compared to Ash's series is that I have always had more speculations going for it, since it's got more of a unique story going and is way more mystery/plot-driven. It makes me think and come up with a bunch of different theories.

I barely did that when it came to Ash's series. Really, maybe some things like how Lillie was traumatized and how Lusamine would be handled, or who was gonna be a part of the M8 (aside from the obvious Champions like Leon, Cynthia, Steven, Diantha, Lance, and Ash himself, but it wasn't like there were a ton of characters to pick from. Mostly just some combination of Iris, Paul, Alain, Wallace, or Tobias.) A bit of what they planned to do with Lysandre and Flare since we never had AZ in the picture. Even tho I've watched since Gen1, I don't think I've ever had many theories going on it compared to HZ. 😅

Okay so this might be a hot take, but if we ignore plot armor, Ash is the top Pokémon Trainer exclusively in the sense of rearing a battle-ready team.

Think about it, all the Champions are adults (except Iris) and have been raising and honing their teams for years. But even Iris worked with Pokémon prior to becoming a trainer and was a prodigy Dragon Trainer. Leon has specifically been unbeatable for who knows how long.

Then there's Ash.

Other than Pikachu, this guy decides to raise up a completely green team for the biggest tournament of his life.

A newly evolved Dragonite that has never been in an official battle before but takes down a Champion's Ace in one of her first major battles.

An abandoned Gengar who took a three year hiatus from training before proceeding to annihilate most of his opponents leading up to the Masters Eight and also learns to Gigantamax.

A newly hatched Riolu who evolves, then Mega Evolves in a freakish speed-run and proceeds to be the team Ace.

A Galarian Farfetch'd that barely listened to Ash at first and then evolves and takes down a Mega Altaria belonging to an Elite Four member that had so many type advantages it was crazy

A Dracovish that is freshly revived and if we think about it probably never actually existed before that moment, and in its first real battle takes down Iris's brute of a Dragonite.

Each one of them took down one of Leon's Pokémon (Sirfetch'd playing support) The Strongest Trainer in the World was defeated by Pokémon in their first year of training with Ash. Do you understand how insane that is?

And Pikachu. This glass cannon that defeats every Metagross it fights, and never lost a battle in the Masters Eight, only winning and tying. And this tiny thing just keeps getting back up again and again.

If that is the team Ash can train up in the course of a year(?) I can't imagine Leon giving Ash any trouble if Ash used his past Aces.

Ash is the goGOAT and he's a terrifying force of nature and I miss him.

the masters 8 would’ve been so much more interesting if the other champions got more character in jn. like let’s see what alain’s up to, what has cynthia been thinking and doing when she’s not around our protag gang, where has steven been. 

the way it was done made me feel not as much sympathy when characters lost and not as much excitement when they won, even if i love the champions a lot. the way the alola league worked had it so we would know every single person and bits of their story way before the league began so they could grow on us, even if some characters either didn’t have many pokémon or didn’t seem strong enough for a league. i’d like if the masters 8 were actually explored characters, at least in jn.

Anyone else feel Steven, Iris, Lance, and Alain should’ve stayed for the rest of the Masters Eight Tournament after they were eliminated? Not only would it make more sense because, well, that’s how tournaments usually go in the anime series, but it could’ve allowed Iris and Dawn to meet up with each other again.
