Summer (real world) birthday headcanons and how they would celebrate their special day
Jas - June 4th - picking wildflowers with Penny in the morning, drawing on coloring pages with some new crayons from Vincent (courtesy of Sam's Joja paycheck) in the afternoon and playing at the park together. Gunther organizes a special story time at the library (with the help of Elliott providing all the voices). Marnie doesn't cook so Jodi would bake a pink cake, but Marnie would probably would have bought a new doll for her. Jas finishes the day on Shane's shoulders feeding the chickens on the farm.
Gus - June 8th - this man deserves more love since he feeds the village! I could see the Farmer bringing fresh oranges from their orchard in a basket wrapped with a yellow ribbon. Emily cooks up a big batch of his favorite fish tacos, and drags Haley in to help serve (giving Gus the night off). Haley would drag Alex into it (at least to carry bags of ice and look hot doing it). Elliott might tinker on the piano. Leah would have a pint or two and pitch in also. Willy brings some tropical curry from Ginger Island for his buddy. The SAS trio attempt a song in his honor. Gus is happy to spend the evening in the Saloon with his friends and neighbors.
Maru - June 10th - A big breakfast with her family complete with fresh strawberries. Seb surfaces before 10 just in her honor. Maru is thrilled to spend the day with her dad in the lab and collecting specimens in the forest. Harvey gave her the day off, of course, and a little strawberry birthday card. She gets a rhubarb pie, courtesy of Evelyn or the farmer. She spends the late afternoon chatting on a park bench with her BFF, Penny, who gives her robot drawings from the Valley kiddos. Robin builds a wooden shelf for all of Maru's odds-and-ends gadgets. And stargazing with Sebastian (like they did as kids) is the perfect way to end the day.
Alex - June 13th - Evelyn would make a complete breakfast for her grandson, and a small gift that she knitted (maybe a cover for a water bottle or for his weights to keep them protected). With the help of Farmer, George ordered a gridball card online for his grandson. Tossing the ball down at the beach and a long ocean swim with Farmer, plus a picnic lunch. (I have this cute little headcanon that he would build sandcastles with Vincent and Sam). If Farmer is able to splurge, catching a gridball game together in the evening is his birthday present. And Alex is a very physical guy in my book, so plenty of hand holding, bear hugs, kisses all day long and then a dip at the hot springs in the evening (and maybe a sensual massage).
Sam - July 17th - A platter of maple bars for breakfast and maybe some early morning cloud gazing with his main squeeze (Farmer). And there's no way he wouldn't have a party. Pizza. Joja colas. Plenty of cheery hi-energy rock music. Streamers. Balloons. Arcade games. Party poppers. Confetti. Karaoke. Oh and he would buy something cheesy at Jojamart for party favors like rubber bracelets or silly string. And maybe for a final touch of whimsy, embracing his inner child, a pinata with tons of candy (much to Vincent's delight)! Abigail would play her woodland flute after one too many sugary drinks and candies and cakes. Seb might even step up to the mic for karaoke (but would sneak a smoke first for courage).
Dwarf - July 22 - Dwarf is just happy if someone makes the effort to visit them and remembers to bring a gift (preferably a shiny stone). Oh and they are touched if you speak their language. Fancy a spot of stardrop tea together? Cheers!
Demetrius - August 19 - this man doesn't strike me as someone who really likes celebrating his birthday. A nice quiet unwrapping of gifts at home (a gift card from Seb because he has no clue what to get his stepdad), and a good bean hotpot dinner is probably all he wants. Maybe sharing an ice cream cone with Robin and a private dance under the stars.
Willy - August 24 - Spend the day fishing together and enjoy a simple fish dinner on the beach by a fire and he's happy. Oh and mugs of mead shared while swapping sea stories.
Leo - August 26 - look for bird feathers and shells to decorate his treehouse. I picture playing tag on the beach with Jas and Vincent, probably Sam and Penny too. And some fresh mangos is a delicious treat! He would probably enjoy a tape of bird songs or a picture book about birds. I totally think Emily would do face painting for his birthday.

Record Store Victory Tour, 2018.
Having three shoulder operations to beat cancer has been the ultimate life victory thus far. It was the most amazing and largest outpouring of support ever. Friends, family, allies, co-workers in good-standing, and even names whom I haven’t seen or heard from in years came to congratulate me and wish me onto a speedy recovery. I don’t know if nine months is what you call “speedy”. Nine months of shoulder replacements, ten weeks of in-home nurse visits, a MRSA infection, six weeks of in-home intravenous antibiotics, and missing two label showcases were balanced out with staying up until 4AM every morning finding endless music (Negril, Robert Ashley, and Steve Khan to name a few), daily postings, heavy amounts of sleep, and Dad’s daily deliveries of free food full of steak, sushi, pizza, chicken, egg rolls, and pasta. With a nine-month blackout period of not leaving the house ever, you had to make the best of it. I knew that after this I would never ever answer to any random nobody about my shoulder. And looking back at it, I say to myself as to why I even let it go so far.
Working for a great company and playing your cards right, you could sit and collect benefits while staying at home doing almost next to nothing. I now had more money in the bank when I last left work. So I promised myself that after I fully recover, I’d treat myself like I never had before. I decided that I would go on a record-store victory tour. I would hit up each and every independent record place, go crazy, and buy up everything I can. After nine months of being bed-ridden and staying home, I needed to treat myself with retail therapy. I needed to get out there and be myself again. Of all I been through and endured, I deserved it.
I didn’t immediately do it, however. It took me a few months to earn back the $2,000 I lost in savings when the benefits ended. While that happened, I enjoyed hot August days walking from my house to the veteran’s park and back, witnessed my ex- Yenny get married, attended Hospital Productions’ 20th Anniversary showcase (a day I will never forget), had a night out in my neighborhood Dave & Busters with my co-workers, and started getting in touch with a Brooklyn witch. I made two label orders with Italians Do It Better and RRRecords which help things get started. As you see, it only got better.
February came and we got a surprise $1,000 from our company. Tax refunds and a third paycheck of the month sealed the deal and all systems go. My first stop was at Patchogue’s Record Stop, their new location since moving from their Shirley warehouse, and thumbed through whatever old-school hip-hop, 12” singles, and other small easy victories I could find. It wasn’t until places like West Sayville’s Vinyl Paradise was when spending three hours minimum searching in stores and $200.00 a visit on music was normal. I can also count West Babylon’s Looney Tunes, Mineola’s Mr. Cheapo’s, and Amityville’s High Fidelity who could’ve matched the totals I had from that store. It’s all about finding the most for less. Whether it’s Seventies’ jazz / fusion on vinyl, discount 12” singles, used CDs, dollar hardcore / punk 45’s, or other long-awaited finds, amassing history and style points is the most self-serving and exciting hunt I take part of. Other stores such as Northport’s Record Reserve, Massapequa’s Infinity Records, Riverhead’s Sunday Records, and Rosie’s Vintage (the smallest of them all) allowed for tidier spaces and friendlier prices for me to walk out with, with smaller receipts ranging from a mere $30.00 to $100.00.
Of course, with many victories come disappointments. Plainview just opened a new store called Vinyl Bay 777. It’s one of the cleanest and shiniest stores on the island, but also the most expensive. With a penchant for ambition and grading, their selections are anywhere from three to five times the price of what you’d find in others store. It was the only experience of the tour that I left feeling poor and let down. The other disappointment? Innersleeve Records all the way at the East End / Amangansett. Why? I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to go.
And almost every store have their own legacy. Record Stop’s been around since 1974 starting in Ronkonkoma, then shuffling to a warehouse in Shirley before finally settling in Patchogue. The family-owned and highly-awarded Looney Tunes had survived a summer fire and took them 90 days to rebuild. This year they’ll celebrate their 50th anniversary. Mr Cheapo’s has two locations, the only store on the island to do so. High Fidelity moved to larger and cleaner digs which solved their storage issues. Record Reserve just moved again; their fourth time in ten years of operation. Infinity Records was the only store on the ropes during the pandemic relying on crowd-funding to make up for the rent. Rosie’s Vintage isn’t owned by Rosie. In fact, Rosie doesn’t exist. It’s a rockabilly wife named Thea who owns an antique store. And you can’t get any literal than Sunday Records, which is only open on Sundays. It’s the only store I know who classified their records not on genre but radio stations and chart positions.
The entire experience was great and I looked to do it again the year after. Unfortunately, I had lots of traffic tickets, fees, and violations to pay. With a vehicle in disrepair and an expired inspection, driving out in daylight without the police spotting me was not ideal. Then I looked to do it last year, and we all know what happened. The pandemic paralyzed and killed businesses left and right. With immediate closures and stop of life, everyone stayed home for their lives.
Next time, it’s going down.
Essential money was saved all throughout the pandemic. Two stimulus checks later, a third on the way, tax refunds, a third bi-weekly check in April, and a bank transfer means I’m ready to do it all over again. In fact, it’s already started! Rough Trade announced it’s relocating from its’ Williamsburg spot. With 25% off books, merchandise, and CDs, it was an incentive to get to it. With me waiting forever to go, now was the chance. I found the perfect March Wednesday to do it and I finally made it happen. What you’ll read later on became the most expensive purchase I ever made at a record store, and also the greatest.
Most locations (except Vinyl Bay 777, replaced by any given one New York City store) are on the list for the next record-store tour. I healed mostly from last summer’s depression and I had a trouble-free winter. With a day out at Williamsburg’s Rough Trade, the spring euphoria and hope came back like it did the first time around. With money in the bank, vaccines, and everything coming back into play, it’s time to have fun again like I want to.

Pizzaiola Pizzeria & Restaurant - Oceanside Plaza on Long Beach Road in Oceanside, NY
It's not often I have the opportunity to try a new pizzeria on Long Island, so I took advantage recently to try Pizzaiola in Deer Park, a spot recommended to me by my co-worker (and Lawn Guyland native) Alexa. First off, the location is VERY Long Island, being smushed in the corner of a shopping center. However, sometimes that's where the best NY pizza is, and Pizzaiola honestly didn't disappoint. They had a number of incredible looking slices that I wish I could have gotten, but I stuck to a plain and a buffalo chicken.
I opened with the plain and loved every second of it. Wet and flavorful cheese, light sauce with the right amount of seasoning, and crust with a nice light crisp to it. Honestly I have nothing bad to say about it, this plain checks pretty much all the boxes you'd look for in a good slice of pizza. The buffalo also looked awesome, but unfortunately didn't quite reach the expectations set by the plain. The bleu cheese seemed to be baked into the cheese because it was not saucy at all and it threw off the flavor for me. It resulted in the bleu cheese being overly spotty which left some bites with way too much and others with far too little. The chicken also didn't have much flavor or kick to it, but there was some weird seasoning sprinkled over the slice that added a different unnecessary flavor instead. Kinda disappointing, especially for the $5 price tag.
Had I just got the plain, I probably would be giving Pizzaiola a 6. However, the lackluster buffalo and the high cost ($9 for the pair) knocks it down to a 5 for me. I can definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a good South Shore plain slice, but think twice if you're going for a specialty.

Times Supermarket: It's close to my house and I normally went there for my whole life. It's good for local food, asian food and the usual supermarket food products. Ever since it got bought out by Don Quijote it put more emphasis on Japanese food. I'm okay with that since I like Japanese food. Also, they sell cooking equipment from Japan now. And also, specialty items from Japan. They even have a gacha ball machine now. Also, they installed self-checkout a few years ago so that's nice. I don't quite go as much nowadays because the parking lot has gotten too crowded ever since they opened up the Goodwill and 7/11 near it.
Foodland: Close to my house but not as close as Times. Stil pretty good. Especially, if you want more local and Hawaiian food. Especially locally sourced meat and vegetables from farmers and ranchers. They also make plate lunches, sandwiches and have excellent fried chicken. Also, they sell prepared garlic bread you can take and bake. I love garlic bread so this is great for me.
Longs Drugs: Not really a grocery store but more like a general store/drug store. It has basic food if you need to eat something basic but if you want more complex stuff like spices or meats then you're out of luck.
Safeway: It's more mainland oriented in terms of food so you don't get much local or Hawaiian food. But the food they do have is good quality. I don't go there often but on occasion I will go there if I'm feeling fancy.
Target: It surprisingly has a grocery store in it. It opened up around last year in my hometown at the mall. For a store like it it has surprisingly good quality. Like Safeway it's more mainland oriented rather than local style though you can occasionally find some local foods like kalua pig or kalbi ribs in the freezer section. The food they have is surprisingly good quality and is the closest to feeling bougie I have ever felt. I feel like I'm on the mainland and not in Hawaii when I'm there. I mean this in a good way since it gives me a glimpse of the food they eat in the mainland. I only go if I need something since it's part of the mall.
Costco: My family would go here when I was younger for buying food in bulk for our family. It's good for pre made stuff and they do have local food. The main benefit is buying in bulk which is good for living in a suburban house. Not so much for an urban apartment. I would go there monthly on my own sometimes to get food I need. Nowadays I don't go as much because the parking is nuts but also the traffic is a nightmare for the location I go to. There's a lot of construction around the Costco I normally go to and it's not worth at this point. Even for the gas which is the cheapest on the island because the line for it is all backed up. The pizza is good and so are the hotdogs and chicken bakes. Though I noticed they have changed the chicken bakes in recent years so it's skinnier now and doesn't have as much food inside of it.
curious with USAmericans in mind but feel free to answer regardless: what’s ur go to supermarket chain

Six years old.
A cafe in Ekaterinburg, celebrating with the dearest, most obnoxious cousin in the world. Received a Pinkie Pie toy who could move and talk, and everyone instantly hated her because she was annoying, but I loved her.
Seven years old.
Petalidi, Greece. Me and my mom - dad is stuck in Russia. The Georgian man next door made me food, our friends who are also there congratulated me. I found a four-leaf clover. My best friend hanged out with me. Grandpa looks at me with disdain. What did I do?
Eight years old.
Kidzania in Moscow. It’s a theme park for kids to play adults and have jobs and pay with money. The cake is doctor-themed - I still don’t know why. I didn’t even like doctors. But my classmates are there, everyone I’ve invited, and I feel like I’m happy.
Nine years old.
Crimea. AKA the best place in the world. I’m in Yalta, and it’s warm and sunny and the sea is right there. I receive a kit for making stuff out of spiky little spheres, which will come in handy later. I visit the Crocodilarium, where I watch little crocodiles and feed them meat. I take a seaside walk.
Ten years old.
Zakinthos Island, Greece. The friends from earlier are there. It’s so warm. I eat ice cream and cake and watermelons, and I feel like nature itself congratulates me, because it looks like paradise. I see Scorpio in the sky. I’ve never seen it before. Hello, Scorpio. I’m ten today.
Eleven years old.
I decide to throw a cowboy party. The kit from before comes in handy when I make little cacti using it. We decorate the living room with balloons and a poster, and it looks like a saloon entrance. Dad makes tacos and steaks. I wear my cowboy hat. My best friend comes over. We laugh, and have fun, and snap photos and play games. My family is great. My friend is great. I’m extremely happy.
…Twelve years old.
At my dad and his new girlfriend’s house. Mom texts me to congratulate me. I respond half-heartedly, not able to express all that I feel. I barely remember what presents I received. I went out of the house about three times at most. The cake was the worst cake I’ve ever tasted. Bland and sour and plain. I have to pretend I like it. I always do, with this woman. And that’s just the beginning.
Thirteen years old.
My mom and her boyfriend’s new flat. Near the forest. I invite my best friend. He gives me a lavash-colored blanket, a potato pillow and a manga book. The blanket I will later bury my cat in. We drink soda and eat chicken. We also cook pizza, and mine is raw while his is burnt. We exchange news and look out the window at the forest and for a moment, I forget about everything.
Fourteen years old.
The camp. A standard congratulation, a standard gift of a bracelet, a mug and a notebook. The notebook I instantly start to draw in. As always here, it’s hot and sunny, and there’s a ton of activities. I watch our teams play volleyball (we win), I eat macaroni for lunch, I catch grasshoppers, I listen to music. And at the end of the day, I fall asleep in our wooden little house, smiling.
Fifteen years old.
Kidzania again. This is the last year I’m allowed to come here. Too old. I invite the boy I’m in love with. He says his feelings are platonic, which I’m sad about but wherever makes him happy. Spoiler alert - now we’re dating. We tower over everyone there - this place is popular with little kids, not teens. We eat together, I show him my Hollow Knight poems. We snap photos and buy things. He wrote me a very heartfelt card. I love him so much.
Sixteen years old.
It’s also the day of my graduation from ninth grade. I’m leaving this school for good. We’ve rehearsed a dance number throughout the year, so I’m dancing with my love - everyone notes how cute we look. I gave him dandelions. Everyone liked the videocomic we both made for two of the teachers. And in the evening, we go to a club with bowling and karaoke and a live crocodile. I see the crocodile, and I remember Crocodilarium. Nostalgia poisons me.
And when it’s time for me to go, I break down crying, hug my classmates who I will never see again, and go home silently. I hope they understood how much I love them - Nick, Arthur, Ulya, Shabby, even Rat. I love them because I know them.
Ten years passed since Pinkie Pie. I don’t even have that toy anymore.
All I have is the memories, that leave me crying into the pillow, clinging onto them, afraid to let go.
I hate to love you and love to hate you, life.
Everything will be alright, I tell myself.
I will have many more birthdays.
And they will be great.
that’s a lot of words but cool! ^^

The dog had gone.
The other person in the house was watching TV in their room. Didn’t matter what was on.
It’d been hot in the house all day because the heating was on, despite it being fifteen degrees outside.
There was a cat yowling in mad sagging intervals out in the garden.
The news on the radio bulletin focused on some berserk random crazy story from the capital 800 miles away.
The carpets were still fucked up from the party from last weekend.
But the birthday stat hadn’t changed anything else in the household.
The garden was abrim with real proper colours that seemed to dissuade matters like global heating; the blueness of the pretty lil flowers in the garden under the kitchen windowsill, blue as comicbook blue skies, blue as the Pacific Ocean in classic movies … perfect in hue.
And up along the supermarket path there already seemed that gaudy breath of summer, with the mix of pollen and the rash bold greenery of the weeds mixed untamed by the pathside.
The supermarket car park was only an eight full.
Kids from the local estates clung to the metal bars that hosted the trolleys.
And the bins were all stuffed up with dog shit bags and bottles and plastic.
On the skyline the sad giant skyrises that were built in the 1960s.
They were ugly beauties indeed, with their orange caps and their overweight sucking
Of the twilight sunshine.
The supermarket was filled with young folks who tended to remind him how old he
Was getting every time he looked at them; the boys as well as the odd pretty girl.
There was a hazy delirium about the supermarket.
Had been here a hundred times and it seemed like a woozy dream coming here at
This time of the evening.
Even the security guard seemed sleepy.
Everything was cheap, the items he bought, except the beer, and only the beer
For being in crates, and poorly beer at that. Meh, shrug, whatever, hey ho.
The girl who had to approve him being over 18 years had these fake painted
Fingernails. Multicoloured nails. And she had a nice body even though her face
Was okay. And she went and spoke to one of her colleagues after serving you.
Again – there was that jealousy of youth as you packed your things into your
Bag and headed off home.
Back in the world there was a wide sense of forgetfulness. Perhaps a sense of
Surprise, also, that you had been here for so long – for most of your life – and
That you often were a waif walking about these parts of the suburb.
The ugly/pretty giants in the background didn’t matter so much in the modern
Age. All you remember of them was playing football when you were a kid nearby
Them. Or, heading along to that library, and the man glaring at you from his car
Because he didn’t recognise you as part of this neighbourhood. Or, you went a
Few times to your brother’s mate’s house who lived near there and the mate loved
Your brother but hated you because you were so different. And they would eat
Chicken pizza and you nothing because you didn’t eat chicken, and they would
Watch zombie movies upstairs and you sat downstairs because you were too
Afraid of the gore and didn’t want to watch. …
All these kinds of memories in a simple stretch of a city, the back gardens of a city.
And you did indeed walk back home. Earlier on you had seen the mysterious neighbour
Who had to walk on a zimmer frame these days because of his history of alcohol.
Presumably he was back home now. And then there were the other family who
Lived next door who were selling their home because their only son had committed
Suicide last year; they wanted to move up north to the city where they were
Originally from in order to try and cope with the grief of it all.
And then there was the boisterous man from across the street who had
Failed to sell his own house around ten years back and he was still here.
Still here in this weird little island of a community which did not belong
To a cathedral or politics or district of even a commune.
It was just what is was; pulsing in actuality, with the coming season of Summer.

YULARA - ULURU KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK 2023
I have just returned from a trip to Yulara, I know that Yulara is part of "the island" and not "beyond" it, however my trip was so amazing and the place so special that I felt it deserved a blog post so here it is.
PS - Tumblr have put a new restriction on how many photos you can put in a blog post, so sadly I won't be able to post as many photos in the post as I did my Singapore post, Stupid Tumblr :(
Yulara and Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park is owned by Anangu, the traditional custodians of the land.
DAY ONE Date: 6/11/2023 Weather: Day: 35 Degrees Night: 32 Degrees Humidity: Day: 32% Night: 16% Itinerary: Arrive At Yulara Check Into Hotel - Sails In The Desert Gecko's Cafe
The trip start at Sydney Domestic Airport on the 6th of November, my Mother and I flew from Sydney to Yulara via Jetstar. The flight to Yulara was 3 hours, I would like to give a shoutout to manager Pat and the crew on our flight, all of them were super friendly and lovely to talk to and made the flight a really lovely experience.
Just like Singapore, the minute the plane landed and we stepped off the plane I immediately noticed the heat. Unlike Singapore which is a very humid heat, the heat in Yulara is extremely dry, according to my phone it was 35 degrees and the humidity was 32%. Apart from the heat, the other thing I noticed was the bright red sand and dust, letting me know that I was indeed in the Red Centre. We got our luggage and then got on to the Hop On Hop Off bus to our hotel in the Ayer's Rock Resort complex, we were staying at Sails In The Desert. I want to take a moment here to say that the rock is NOT!!! Called Ayer's Rock it's called Uluru, it used to be called Ayer's Rock however that name was changed to Uluru in 2002, I'll explain why at the bottom of this post but just remember to call it Uluru and not Ayer's Rock as the local Anangu do not appreciate people referring to the rock by its old name. The resort complex however is called "Ayer's Rock Resort"
Arriving At Yulara
Mum and I checked into our hotel and by that point we were both starving so we decided to have lunch by the pool, I had Mushroom Gnocchi and my Mum had the Ancient Grains Salad. The gnocchi was delicious!!! I almost licked my plate clean it was so good.
Mushroom Gnocchi
After lunch we both had a nice long dip in the pool, which was so refreshing as it was so incredibly hot outside.
Ready For A Dip In The Pool
That night we both went down to Gecko's Cafe which is located in the Town Square for dinner, I had a chicken schnitzel and Mum had a vegetarian pizza. I forgot to take photos of our dinner as I was so tired by that point, sorry about that.
Going Out For Dinner
COSTS Lunch: $32.00 Dinner: $26.00
DAY TWO Date: 7/11/2023 Weather: Day: 32 Degrees Night: 21 Degrees Humidity: Day: 15% Night: 18% Itinerary: Uluru
Day two was all about what we had travelled all the way to Yulara for, seeing Uluru. We started our day nice and early, so that we could do the 10 kilometre base walk around Uluru. If you are planning on doing the base walk, it is important that you go either early morning at sunrise or sunset, it is not safe to do it in the middle of the day as it gets extremely hot and there is no shade. Also make sure you pack plenty of water and Gatorade as well as wear appropriate clothing (information on appropriate clothing in "Tips") to avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
We got on the Hop On Hop Off bus at 7:00AM and arrived at Uluru in 25 minutes, note that Uluru is inside Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park and you need a ticket to enter the park, you can buy a ticket online or you can do what we did which is go to to the Town Square and buy a ticket at the tourist office.
When we arrived at Uluru, I was at a loss for words, the rock is huge and just feels so magical. They say the rock changes colour throughout the day and I can confirm that is 100% true, I could see Uluru as we entered the park by the bus and it looked purple but by the time we actually arrived at the rock it was bright orange.
Uluru
As we embarked on our walk, admiring the monolith, we came across some signs which told a story about an event that took place here thousands of years ago, I would share the photos but thanks to Tumblr's stupid 30 photos per post limit I can't so I will type out the story for you.
"In the beginning, the Mala people came from the north and could see this rock. They thought it looked like a good place to stay a while and make inma (ceremony). The Mala men decorated and raised Ngaltawata, the ceremonial pole. The inma had now begun.
The Mala people began to busily prepare for their ceremonies. The women gathered and prepared food for everyone. They stored nyuma (seed cakes) in their caves. The men went out hunting. They made fires and fixed their tools and weapons.
In the middle of preparations, two Wintalka men approached from the west. They invited the Mala people to attend their inma. The Mala people said no, explaining their ceremony had begun and could not be stopped.
The Disappointed Wintalka men went back and told their people. Enraged, they created an evil spirit - a huge devil - dog called Kurpany to destroy the Mala inma.
As Kurpany travelled towards the Mala people he changed into many forms. He was a mamu, a ghost. Luunpa the kingfisher woman was the first to spot him. She warned the Mala people but they didn't listen.
Kurpany arrived and attacked and killed some of the men. In great fear and confusion the remaining Mala people fled down into South Australia with Kurpany chasing them. The story continues down south.
These ancestors are still here today. Luunpa still keeps watch, but she is now a large rock. Kurpany's footprints are imprinted into the rock leading towards the east and south. The men who were killed are still in their cave.
This story teaches that it is important to finish what you start and that you should watch for and listen to warnings of danger."
There are certain parts of Uluru that you cannot photograph, these places are clearly marked with signs asking that you not take photographs, this is around the north - east face of Uluru. The reason for this is that the rock details and features at these sites are equivalent to sacred scripture for the Anangu - they describe culturally important information that should only be viewed in their original location and by specific people.
Throughout the walk, there are emergency phones and seats with wooden shelters over them should you become ill or injured and require help. About 9 km's into the walk, I began to suffer from heat exhaustion, luckily for me it was only very mild and I recovered quickly and was able to finish the walk but do be mindful that heat exhaustion is a possibility on this walk.
Me Towards The End Of The 10km Base Walk
Once we had completed the walk, we got the bus back to our hotel, we both had a much needed swim before we had lunch, we ate by the pool again and i had the mushroom gnocchi again.
That night, we were booked to go and see the Field Of Lights, however a huge wind storm picked up and all of the outdoor night tours including the Field Of Lights got cancelled. We decided to instead have a buffet dinner at out restaurant, Sails In The Desert has a buffet dinner every night, it costs $89.00 per person. It was the best buffet I have ever seen!!! such a great variety and everything was delicious, I had hokkien noodles, arrabiata, truffled cauliflower and garlic and rosemary focaccia. They also had a desert station with a huge chocolate fountain!!! I had ice cream and chocolate and two small slices of chocolate cake.
Dressed And Ready For The Field Of Lights
The Amazing Buffet Dinner
COSTS Uluru Kata Tjura National Park Pass: $38.00 Lunch: $32.00 Dinner: $89.00
DAY THREE Date: 8/11/2023 Weather: Day: 32 Degrees Night: 20 Degrees Humidity: Day: 19% Night: 12% Itinerary: Bush Yarn Gallery Of Central Australia Mangata Field Of Lights
The next day we decided to go into the Town Square and attend the 10:00AM Bush Yarn where an Anangu man explained the use and production of tools used by Anangu men. The tools we were introduced to were
Kali - The Kali is what the Anangu call a boomerang, unlike other boomerangs, the kali does not return when thrown. it is used for hunting.
Miru (Spear Thrower) - The Miru is a mulipurpose tool, it is used for hunting, making fires, spear sharpening, mixing ochre and digging.
Kulata (Spear) - Used for hunting.
Kali & Two Miru
Kulata
After listening to the Bush Yarn, we got on the Hop On Hop Off bus and went and checked out all of the other hotels, there are 5 hotels within Ayer's Rock Resort and a campground. - Desert Gardens - Emu Walk Apartments - The Lost Camel Hotel - Sails In The Desert - Outback Hotel & Lodge
When we got to the Desert Gardens Hotel, we discovered the Gallery Of Central Australia (GOCA), a small art gallery which showcases absolutely beautiful works of art by local Indigenous artists. In the middle of the gallery, were two Indigenous women working on beautiful paintings. You can buy some of the artworks and there is also a little gift shop selling paintings, cards, bags and more. I desperately wanted to buy one of the artworks, I bought a card instead and put it in a beautiful frame.
A Card I Bought & Framed From GOCA
After a tour of the complex, we went back to our hotel for lunch and a swim, i of course had Mushroom Gnocchi!!!
That night, we were booked in to the Field Of Lights which had been cancelled the previous night. The bus picks you up at 8:00PM so we went and had an early dinner beforehand. We went to the Desert Gardens Hotel and ate in their restaurant Mangata, Mum had poached chicken and vegetables and I had spaghetti bolognaise, both of our meals were delicious.
Spaghetti Bolognaise At Mangata
After dinner, the AAT King bus picked us up from our hotel and took us out to the Field Of Lights. The Field Of Lights is a solar powered light installation created by Bruce Monro with more than 300,000 lights covering a vast space of more than seven football fields. This phenomenal installation took over 2,000 hours to design and build in the United Kingdom and then another 3,900 hours to assemble on the site near Uluru. The exhibition first exhibited on the 1st of April 2016 and was scheduled to finish on the 31st of March 2018, however the installation is now permanent thanks to its immense popularity.
Field Of Lights
COSTS Lunch: $32.00 Dinner: $29.00 Field Of Lights: $46.00
DAY FOUR Date: 9/11/2023 Weather: Day: 33 Degrees Night: 20 Degrees Humidity: Day: 17% Night: 19% Itinerary: Didgeridoo Workshop
We really didn't do much on our fourth day, we mostly spent the day by the pool just relaxing as we hadn't had much of a chance to do that since arriving at Yulara.
At 11:00AM we went too the Akari theatre outside GOCA and the Didgeridoo workshop, while many people call this instrument a Didgeridoo, Didgeridoo is actually the rhythm produced by playing the instrument, the instruments actual name is Udarki. The man who played the Udarki explained the skilled and proper way to play a Udarki, it is not something you can just pick up and blow into anymore than you can just pick up a guitar and start strumming away, it takes practice and skill to be able to correctly play it. During the demo, Udarkis are handed out to the audience to have a go, however only men are given one as women do not play the Udarki and it is culturally insensitive for women to do so.
COSTS Lunch: $19.50 Dinner: $32.00
DAY FIVE Date: 10/11/2023 Weather: Day: 33 Degrees Night: 20 Degrees Humidity: Day: 12% Night: 19% Itinerary: Paint Your Own Australian Animal Desert Awakenings
Like the previous day, we didn't really do much throughout the day besides swim in the hotel pool, although I did take part in a Paint Your Own Australian Animal workshop in my hotel in which you get given a wooden animal that you paint as well as a guide on Indigenous markings and what they mean. We had also booked to do the Desert Awakenings tour that evening.
My Paintings, The Marking On The Lizard Means Travelling And The Markings On The Platypus Means 2 Women
In the late afternoon, the AAT King bus came and picked us up from our hotel and took us out to Kata Tjuta, the ride there took 37 minutes. Along the way, we stopped off at the Kata Tjuta Sunset Viewing Platform, where we were able to see both Uluru and Kata Tjuta and get some photos, we then got back on the bus and headed to Kata Tjuta.
Mum And I At The Kata Tjuta Sunset Viewing Platform
We arrived at Kata Tjuta and had drinks and canopies whilst sitting and watching the sun set over Kata Tjuta, it was a truly spectacular site. We stayed for an hour, watching Kata Tjuta change from orange to brown to purple, before getting back onto the bus, on the bus ride home, Mum and I were sitting at the front of the bus and were lucky enough to see two King Brown Snakes slithering across the road, I was absolutely stoked as I'm a snake lover.
Kata Tjuta Changing Colours As The Sun Sets
We got back to our hotel and had dinner in the restaurant, I got my final bowl of mushroom gnocchi, and then we went back to our room and began the depressing task of packing up our stuff, ready to leave the next day.
COSTS Lunch: $19.50 Desert Awakenings Tour: $160.00 Dinner: $32.00
TIPS
If you are doing the 10km base walk of Uluru, make sure to wear a hat, a lightweight shirt with sleeves that cover your arms, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes, avoid wearing black clothing as this will absorb heat.
If you are doing the 10km base walk of Uluru, make sure to pack plenty of water and Gatorade, dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can occur very easily out here and be dangerous.
Climbing Uluru was banned in 2019 so you cannot climb Uluru, instead admire its beauty from the ground.
Due to its remote location and high overheads, EVERYTHING!!!! is expensive, food, souvenirs, tours and basic necessities like sunscreen and tissues, try to take as much of your own stuff as possible and if you're staying somewhere with kitchen facilities, there is an IGA so preparing your own food is an option for cutting down on costs.
The Sun is harsh and extreme, be sure to consistently keep up with sunscreen application and wear a hat. When possible wear long sleeves and long pants/dresses/skirts, the less sun on your skin the better
The Hop On Hop Off Bus is free and operates every 20 minutes, making a stop at every accomodation.
CULTURAL INFORMATION AND SENSITIVITIES
Ensure you have permission before photographing any of the Anangu.
Whilst some Anangu may give you permission to take a photo, you must NEVER!!! film them
Do not photograph or enter any sacred sites.
Anangu greet each other by saying "palya" a word which can also mean welcome, thank you, understood, ok and goodbye.
Do not refer to Uluru as Ayer's Rock or Kata Tjuta as The Olgas.
The Anangu honour their dead by not speaking their names or looking at their pictures, it is believed that doing so will recall and disturb the spirit.
HISTORY OF ULURU KATA TJUTA NATIONAL PARK The mesmerising monolith known as Uluru was created over 600 million years ago. While Indigenous Australians date back 60,000 years, the Anangu have lived in the area and used Uluru and Kata Tjuta for sacred ceremonies and rites of passage for the last 10,000 years. The caves and crevices of the monolith contain many sacred areas and ancient rock paintings. Before European invasion which took place in 1770, Indigenous Australians spoke an estimated 700 dialects. Today, only 20 - 50 languages remain and are spoken by children. Anangu mainly speak Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, although some speak up to six of the Aboriginal languages.
In 1873, William Gosse went on a three month journey from Alice Springs through the desert, which brought him to Uluru, he was the first non Indigenous person to see Uluru and so he named it "Ayer's Rock" after Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia at the time. On October 26th, 1985. Kata Tjuta, was discovered by a non Indigenous person for the first time in 1872 by Ernest Giles. Upon his discovery, Ernest named the collection of mountains "Mount Olga" after Queen Olga of Wurttemberg.
In the 1930's more explorers began arriving and by the 1940's the first graded road was laid. Tourism to the area officially began in the 1950's and over the next few decades, tourism operators started tours, roads were built as well as a small airport.
the Australian government finally returned ownership of the area and the national park back over to its rightful owners the Anangu on the 26th of October 1985. In 2002, the a few name changes were enacted in order to show respect to and acknowledge the Anangu as the traditional owners of the land, Ayer's Rock was changed to Uluru, The Olgas was changed to Kata Tjuta and Ayer's Rock Mount Olga National Park was changed to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park. The Anangu people do not appreciate people calling Uluru "Ayer's Rock" or Kata Tjuta "The Olga's" as these names were a result of European colonisation and were imposed on a section of Aboriginal country. For this reason, you should always refer to the rock as Uluru and the mountains as Kata Tjuta.
