you're laughing. there is an alternate fantasy high timeline where mary ann is the barbarian of the bad kids and plays bass, gorgug is best friends with biz and co-prez of the av club, sandra lynn is with sklonda and squeem is dead and you're laughing. ally beardsley is getting to play their unused pc, sir amanda maillard, and you're laughing. fig and ayda got engaged and she recorded a 80-minutes long proposal album for her and you're laughing. cody walsh and loose baron were pronounced creepy and freaky by kristen applebees in an olive garden and you're laughing. PINOCCHIO IS BECOMING THE SETTING AND YOU'RE LAUGHING.

lou wilson characters who forgive their terrible parental figures because they believe that someone being cruel to them is an ultimately beneficial thing hits me right where it hurts. pinocchio saying "sometimes you need a bad stepmom to let you know what's right". gunnie hugging norman and saying "you made me the man i am, by being mean to me and then being really, really, really nice". fabian's endless defense of his parents. as the stepmother says to pinocchio: "nobody needs a bad stepmom". none of you need bad parents. cruelty isn't good for you pleaaaase

god… rewatching neverafter again
and the intro scenes are a mixed bag in terms of terror
rosamund is kind of freaky with the vines and the dead princes, but then we have gerard’s, which is very amusing. pib’s is also pretty funny. mother goose’s is dark bc his son is dead, but they still joke about the gander
then we get to ylfa. and brennan and emily show the darkest and saddest origin story i have ever seen for little red riding hood. a little girl, lost in every way possible, confused and alone and scared, begging her mother to let her in, and her mother refuses. her mother says that her daughter is dead and gone and a monster stands in her place. ylfa doesn’t want to be a monster. she wants to go home. but she is different, and her home turns on her, and that betrayal turns her on them. she huffs and she puffs and she blows the family that left her for dead away
and pinocchio. pinocchio whose mother is a shadow in a doorway. pinocchio who became a boy by being good, only to lose that gift by lying to save his father. pinocchio who loves his father enough to lie, and must now keep on lying to serve a woman he has never even looked in the eyes
there’s something very fitting about the children in this fairy tale land having the most horrifying stories. those stories about children straying from the path or needing to never tell a lie or misbehave in order to be real, they’re meant as warnings. be good, children, or you’ll never have the respect that adults get. be good, or the monsters in the shadows will come for you. be good, or you’ll die
in a season that was meant to be horror but was subverted by the players knowing the theme, i appreciate even more the darker corners of the story

Something about the batfam X Neverafter AU (fairy tales gone wrong AU) that's so important to me is that fairy tales were originally horror stories because they were cautionary tales. Because on a meta level, the use these people, these children had was that they could serve as warnings. "Do not stray off the path or the wolf will get you." Thinking about that response to fanmail where a little girl was sad Jason had died and the writer straight up answered "Jason died because he didn't listen to Batman." Thinking about how Jason was used as a cautionary tale for the rest of his death and even after he came back. Thinking about how Neverafter is all about that, about the loss of free will and identity that comes when your entire life is used to tell a story, to prove a point. Thinking about how this is a world where you can hold your son's bones in your arms because it's how the story goes, and thinking about characters saying "no. This isn't how the story goes. I'd rather break each of your elegant crafted rules and careful balance than accept how the story goes. Actually, I'd rather destroy everything that loves and lives and has ever mattered to anyone that bear victim to my story anymore. But I want to believe there's hope for something more." Thinking about Damian, heir to the demon and son of the bat, and thinking of Pinocchio cutting off his puppet strings that the stepmother was holding and throwing them in the air and becoming the boy of destiny. Thinking about how they all die and nothing changes, and death loses meaning and importance and becomes at the same time horrifyingly worse, as the way it's like nothing had changed and yet you lost something infinitely precious, and what does death matter anymore? This is just a story. Thinking about death the wolf that was boiled in a stew and skinned as a rug and eaten by a little girl. In most of my stories, I lose. I exist to be stopped. But I can only ever be stopped for a time.
Thinking about the batfamily members and which fairy tales they would embody and how they would fare in this universe where to survive requires an annihilation of the self, where suffering is a lesson and a happy ever after is a curse, where those wo do not look away from what they are tear their eyeballs out in horror. How they would fight, despite everything, for the hope of an alternative, against fairies and gods and everything that creates and everything that kills, for the right to self-determination, to be a person rather than an object, to write their own story.
And how they would fail.
This is a horror story, after all. We need to make sure the children have all learnt their lesson.
