#magic and misfits season 2

Having this little exchange of Jammer and the Qohlye in this episode means so much to me! I remember watching tv shows and movies as a kid and feeling left out. Seeing SO much more representation now than 20 years ago is incredible. This season of D20 has so many moments that feel likes a celebration of Black culture and it really moved me. Thank you Aabria and the whole team cause I really appreciate it!

Misfits and Magic Season 2 Episode 1 disorganized thoughts!

“We’re gonna cut down from 40 songs to 20 so you can train animals in the second half of the hour” it’s so great how everything she says is more impossible than the last!

Also “language LANGUAGE” was a fun bit

Jammer and Sam both seem busy, but K and Evan are straight up avoiding their minds and I’m so excited to see where this goes. (Poor Theadore) And watching Sam and Jammer observe and react to “you’re looking well” was so funny!

Kinda glad they broke up just because Brennen and Erika do tense/complicated moments so well. Like look at burrows end.

I keep looking at Erika’s sleeves. They’re just really cool.

And Aabria is so. good. at. this.

This is already so fun for me.

once again just love Aabria's ''what you don't see....'' shit bc like. It can be used to give a sense of dread or foreshadowing but in the case of this latest episode it's giving the thing I so love every time I reread the Neverending Story that is ''but that is another story and will be told another time'' like. Just giving a little glimpse of the stories or npcs or scenes we're passing by makes the world feel so much fuller, like yes you chose not to go this path but let me give you a little glimpse of what lies down it and then you immediatly feel all the potential of where else this story could have gone and it just feels so much bigger

ADHD creativity is so often such a tasty melange of things and experiences collected from all over then repurposed to unexpected ends.

It can be hilarious, feel random (but absolutely NEVER is), be some of the most harrowing shit you've ever heard or seem super profound.

Great examples of this:

Aabria Iyengar - it feels really obvious to me what a lot of her influences are because she's a tumblr girlie and a science nerd and knows kdrama beats and regency shit. Like all I'm saying is acofaf was my absolute jam and the bear made sense. She's got the plasticine corpses in her repertoire and I've got an osteology lab in mine. I get how that informs your norms.

Ursula Vernon/T Kingfisher - knows a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff. Particular interests in art and animals and birds and nature. So you get stuff like the hive mind hares and her horror that is too based in stuff I know I'm scared of so I will fully admit to being too chicken to try. But literally every other thing she writes i am down for.

Emily Axford - similar taste in books, has odd gaps in her pop culture knowledge, loves to figure out how to use rules to make literal magic happen. Will frequently surprise others. Which sometimes surprises me because like she's pretty open about what she's been reading or doing and the "randomest" stuff is like extrapolated from those experiences. Not to say that it's not brilliantly done, just that the steps feel obvious to me. Like her whole speech about three blind mice in Never After happened after other relevant shit happened that clearly put it top of mind for her to draw from.

Xiran Jay Zhao - they are pretty open about their inspirations for Iron Widow. (Anime and Chinese harem dramas) and it is one of the books I am forever throwing at people because it's so good.

I mean, I also have adhd so I'm used to making those leaps anyhow. It's so nice to have such amazing ADHD creators around. To have media that feels like the way being in a room with a bunch of other folks with ADHD can feel. Where everyone is ping pong balling off each other, jumping from one topic to the next and following and being followed. Not having to explain why things go together. Making new things from all the component shinies you've collected. Trading shinies with others.

Just thinking about that in the wake of yet another dope af episode of Misfits and Magic where Aabria was doing some dope ass terrifying world building.

i don’t think you understand

we have had aabria autumn on d20 since 2020, when she stole the show as myrtle in pirates of leviathan. you could feel her inhabiting that mermaid over a zoom screen. felt like i was watching a mermaid roll around in a life-size martini glass full of vodka with my own eyes.

then she changed the game with mismag in 2021, bringing kids on brooms, personalized props, lighting effects, and projections to the dome, after which she held it down as antiope jones. the reluctant leader, the late bloomer who is not late but merely arriving in her own time.

in 2022 she came back with kisses, with regency, with good society, with flowers and tokens and projections and a willingness to follow up on consequences that never stopped moving. wuvvy my beloved. kill me with the devotion of a life lived in service to the one you love why don’t you.

in 2023 she was the spiciest assassin. fit for the genre in fits for the genre. replacing skalds like she was born to do it. and then burrow’s end. a genre exploration with a splash of the violence of dnd and the tragicomedy of family. beautiful sets, incredible audiovisual effects, and horror both visceral and cosmic.

in 2024? she’s back with wizards baby. she’s taking a 4 episode jaunt of americans becoming wizards in britain and making an adventure of eleven episodes. planets move, the dm screen talks, and the wind is on the rise.

aabria adds such a fun, artistic, genre-bending, cinematic flavor to her time in the dome; it’s no wonder that the Q4 mid-length season is hers.
