Regardless of how angry Evan is at K, however much unresolved conflict they have from their relationship, whatever he’s contending with internally in response to what they said about him, Evan loves K.

He didn’t hesitate. Boudicca attacked K and before they hit the ground, Evan breaks his wand and turns off all the lights in Boudicca’s brain. Hesitation gets you killed. Half measures get you killed. He’s lived his life in survival mode. He knows that if you don’t act decisively and severely you get hurt because it gives your attacker an opportunity. Take no chances. Your life depends on you fighting and winning. So you fight in a way that assures your opponent can’t fight back or get back up and try to hurt you again. It’s not a schoolyard brawl or a sparring session or an organized bout. There’s no such thing as honour or rules. There’s only life and death. Only survival. Anything else but ruthless efficiency is a waste you cannot afford.

Boudicca should’ve known that about Evan. As a teen he fought a full adult in a gas station parking lot. He already sees her as a threat but is willing to show restraint because there are bigger issues. But the second she shows him what she truly is and cannot help but be, it activates the keen animal instinct of survival. He loves K. Attacking what he loves is an attack on him. And all of life has taught him to meet any mortal danger with equally deadly force. She should’ve known. Her arrogance got her killed.

ok i know lou and erika and danielle are all absolutely incredible this ep but let's all say a special thanks to danielle who began the horrors as the first one to react to evan's death and started with "i can't feel his pulse i can't i can't i can't" and is visibly trembling. because she set the tone and allowed the others to also react (and act) strongly which is why this episode is amazing and also *the* most painful dnd episode i've ever seen

Evan accusing himself of being 'too literal' in his understanding of Jammer's familial speech is just.. sooo relatable from the perspective of an autistic kid who has always wanted to have friends so close they considered themselves your siblings (or claimed to 'adopt you') because friend is a temporary state and relations are permanent

I think at the core of it is that Evan will always approach the Quohlye looking for a way to Win The Exchange, Obtain the Maximized Win Condition, and that's simply not the kind of knowledge that the Quohlye deals in. The Quohlye deals in understanding, connection, and that entails knowing that the best, most useful knowledge you could attain from it will still not lead you to the ultimate good. I think Evan chafes against this, against the idea of this mystery and ambiguity, but he also fundamentally understands that he simply is not compatible with that kind of magical knowledge. Sam is. The gift you receive from the Quohlye is not a server full of raw potential. It is not an antler shaped scar across your pectoral that is the mark of something ancient and cthonic protecting you. It is not raw creation smoldering off the surface of your skin, making you six and a half feet tall. It is understanding. It is knowing you have power and the amount you have is enough. Sam took understanding, and when Evan fought so that she could have even more, she was given something that would make that understanding shine bright and gold in her hair and in her hands. Evan knows that Sam made the right choice between understanding and power. Evan will still choose power. Evan will still demand power. The Quohlye offers an alternative. Does magic have symmetry or does it not have symmetry? Will you also get a cool color-coded set of powers or will you gain a gift that actually matches the magic you are approaching?
