Portrait Task
As part of our first day back on campus grounds, we were tasked with a portrait task that was a constructed way for us to all get to know one another, talk to people and maybe make new friends in the process.
Throughout the two studios, multiple set ups had been constructed for us, in each set up was a different diffuser, light source, reflector and let us play about with the different pieces of equipment available to us at that time.

The 3 photos above are from my first set up, for this I used:
•Beauty dish
•TRIFLECTOR
•DIFFUSER
•Wall reflector
•Grey background
•Camera: EOS 6D
•Lens: 24-105mm
I liked this set up a lot, it was simple and easy to use, but between the other set ups going on and the blind next to us unable to be pulled down, there was quite a bit of exposure. But I liked the outcomes nonetheless.

These photos are from my second set up:
•Two soft box strip lights
•Chair
•Same Camera and lens
•Pink background
I liked this set up lot, I enjoy using strip lights because they help to create strong catcheyes in the model. I also feel they add a rather moody look to my photos, especially when combined with the background. I liked this set up a lot.

This was my third set up:
•Beauty dish
•Snoot light (looks up from ground)
•Orange background
•Same camera and lens
•Camera trigger
I enjoyed this set up a lot! It was a very dramatic and moody atmosphered lightning style, between the orange background and the warmth of the light, this set up created rather dramatic shots for me.
All in all: I enjoyed my first day of year 2! It was fun getting to know some new people, especially when meeting people is a severe challenge for me thanks to my anxiety and aspergers, so it was really nice to be welcomed into a group who already knew one another. I found it daunting as everyone knew everyone but I didn't, so it was a big relief to be able to talk to people thanks to this task.

I try not to bash apps used for learning, unfortunately I don’t want to see anyone else ripped off by @Shawacademy. I was offered a free trial through them for a diploma in photography; I started the first lesson today where I learned there were five modules needed to complete the course...I was only taking module one...and I’d have to pay for the other four to finish. In the app it shows I’m taking the “diploma is photography course” online it shows I’m only taking module one. The advertisement I was shown showed “Diploma in Photography”. This is false advertising at its finest!!! DO NOT USE @ShawAcademy for ANY OF YOUR EDUCATIONAL NEEDS! THEY ARE A RIP OFF!!!! . . . . #photography #photographystudents #photographystudentsunite #shawacademy #shawacademyphotography #falseadvertising #liars #ripoff #donotuseshawacademy #tryingtostealmymoney #notworthyourtime #betterwaystogetcertified #theylied (at Walnut Creek, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzEBoJggqf_/?igshid=1h6ekhd8ys7lx

Intro to Light & Lighting
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this afternoon class we were given some portrait pictures by professional photographers and asked to try to emulate the picture.
For me this was difficult for a number of reasons.
1. Didn't have time to play with camera, in this case I was loaned a Canon 2000D.
2. I've never gotten the hang of 'people pictures'
3. I'm learning about light and shadow from scratch
The first image (David Eustace) proved challenging in that we were using natural light from a window and whatever reflector boards we could, still didn't get it quite right but ....
The second image (Kirsty Mackay) was challenging for a different reason, how on earth to create an image where the face is half in shadow. Bear in mind my lack of knowledge in this area. What did we do?
We found an empty studio used one of the studio lights to shine at an angle and down, put a reflector board partially in front to create a shadow, white reflector at the back and at the side to light up the other side of the face also on that side we had a portable round silver reflector which we also used for the same side of the face but angled from the ground to try to avoid to much shadow under the chin. Unfortunately, at this point I couldn't figure out how to change the quality of the light to stop it being too warm.
In the final image we returned to our class studio and was experimenting with light and shadow from which direction should the light come from and in which direction should the face be turned to form a shadow. It was at this point I discovered that if I changed the iso setting to auto I got the desired light quality 😊
My model throughout was Eryn, thank you very much for your patience 😊
Oh yes, and apologies for the lack of technical names 😂
