#Portrait Lighting

Look at the lighting on their faces in this scene. They look amazing, and part of that is how they're lit.

This is classic portrait lighting. It's soft but directional. Look at the triangle of light on Ed's right cheek. Look at the shadow under Stede's jaw. See how the light is reflected in their eyes? See how the light is softly hitting their faces? How the lighting is just a bit cool, so the warmest tones come from their faces?

How it started:

My old photo and media gear crate. My father and I found this in the basement of our new family house when I was like, 5... I started using it for mini Polaroid storage, disposable camera storage, film storage and camera storage after my first auto-advance camera. I eventually used it for flashlights and my HP PhotoSmart digital camera.

How it’s going:

I may consider getting a bigger box...

I’ve already got 4 Godox speedlights and an X2 trigger, 2 C-Stands, 2 folding light stands/backlight stands, a couple umbrella modifiers and a couple of small stripbox/hair lights. I’m dipping into constant lighting and RGB tubes.

This isn’t everything I have... only what’s sitting here as I organize. Some light modifiers and diffusers not pictured. No mics or interfaces visible... one hidden video gimbal... they’re in boxes and a storage ottoman. dji Ronin SC gimbal disassembled here with plenty of SmallRig gear.

Nikii the Nikon Z6ii will not be alone long. I have plans...

Once more I am obsessed with the lighting in this show.

So, have you heard of catch lights? It's when light sources are reflected in the subject's eyes. Catch lights make people look alive. For example:

Look at the ✨sparkles✨

Now look at this shot. There are no catch lights; if you ever see a photo and think "that person looks dead inside" there probably aren't catch lights.

This shot doesn't have any catch lights. As a result the eyes look flat and lifeless, which reinforces the despair in the scene.

But beyond that - there is light reflecting from his eyes here, but not in the eyes themselves, only in the little tear 🫠😭

There are actually a few scenes from this episode where Ed is lit specifically to avoid having light reflecting in his eyes. That decision really adds to the sense of hopelessness.

One of my Patrons had a request the other day that I got a bit carried away with in the studio. Soooo now I've got about 80 portrait images of a tinkerer/artificer and this will absolutely be a pack in the future. :') In the meantime, here's one of my favs.
