Photography Tips for Your Nairobi National Park Tour
Nairobi National Park is one of the most unique wildlife destinations in the world. Located just outside Kenya’s capital city, this park offers breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife photography opportunities. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned photographer, capturing stunning images of lions, rhinos, and giraffes against the backdrop of Nairobi’s skyline is a rewarding experience. To help you make the most of your Nairobi National Park tour, we’ve compiled essential photography tips that will enhance your safari shots.
1. Choose the Right Camera and Lenses
When embarking on a wildlife photography adventure, selecting the right camera and lens is crucial. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a zoom lens (such as a 70–300mm or 100–400mm) is ideal for capturing animals from a distance without disturbing them. If you’re using a smartphone, invest in clip-on zoom lenses to improve your shots.
2. Understand Lighting and Timing

3. Use the Right Camera Settings
Shutter Speed: A fast shutter speed (1/500s or higher) is essential for capturing moving animals without blur.
ISO: Keep ISO as low as possible to avoid noise in your photos, but increase it in low-light conditions.
Aperture: Use a wide aperture (f/2.8 — f/5.6) to create a beautiful depth of field, making your subject stand out against the background.
4. Composition Techniques for Stunning Shots
Rule of Thirds: Position your subject off-center to create a more dynamic image.
Leading Lines: Utilize natural elements like roads, rivers, or tree lines to guide the viewer’s eye.
Framing: Use trees, bushes, or other objects to frame your subject and add depth to your shots.
5. Be Patient and Observe Animal Behavior
Wildlife photography requires patience. Instead of rushing to take photos, observe the animals’ behavior and wait for the perfect moment. Capturing a lion yawning, a giraffe drinking water, or zebras crossing a road makes for incredible storytelling images.
6. Take Advantage of Different Perspectives
Eye-Level Shots: If possible, try taking photos at the animal’s eye level for a more engaging perspective.
Wide-Angle Views: Capture the landscape along with the wildlife to show the vastness of Nairobi National Park.
Close-Ups: Use a zoom lens to focus on details like an elephant’s textured skin or a lion’s piercing eyes.
7. Utilize Burst Mode for Action Shots
Animals move quickly, making it difficult to capture the perfect shot. Using burst mode allows you to take multiple images in quick succession, increasing your chances of getting the ideal shot of an animal in motion.
8. Keep a Steady Hand or Use a Tripod
A stable camera is essential for sharp images, especially in low-light conditions. If you’re shooting from a safari vehicle, use a bean bag or a monopod for added stability.
9. Avoid Using Flash
Flash can startle animals and is often ineffective for distant subjects. Instead, adjust your ISO and aperture to accommodate low-light situations naturally.
10. Respect Wildlife and the Environment

11. Editing Your Photos for a Professional Touch
Post-processing can enhance the quality of your images. Adjust brightness, contrast, and sharpness using software like Adobe Lightroom or Snapseed. However, avoid excessive editing that alters the natural beauty of your shots.
Capturing the essence of Nairobi National Park through photography is an unforgettable experience. By following these tips, you’ll be able to take stunning images that preserve the beauty of this remarkable destination. Whether you’re booking a Nairobi National Park Tour Package for a half-day or full-day adventure, preparation and the right techniques will elevate your photography skills.

Depth of Field Aperture Task
For this task we were asked to take similar pictures of the same subject but at different f stops in order to compare the depth of field captured by the camera.
As is evident by the set of images below, at lower f stops the camera will capture a more shallow depth of field and conversely at higher f stops the camera will capture a more extended depth of field meaning that more of the image will be in sharper focus.
f/22

f/5.6
