This dramatically scenic northern Drakensberg escarpment route is close to the Kruger National Park. It includes such sights as Gods Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, many beautiful waterfalls including the Mac Mac, Lisbon, and Berlin Falls. The Blyde River Canyon is the third deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia but is the deepest green canyon in the world with regular rainfall. Pilgrims Rest is an old gold mining town preserved in its entirety. The Long Tom Pass rises to 2300 metres before descending to the Kruger National Park which is below 400 metres. The pass is named after the canon manufactured by Le Creuset in France, with which the Boers bombarded the advancing British, and of which a replica stands at the top of the pass.

You never know what will be around the next corner in the Kruger National Park. On our final morning, we were heading south towards Crocodile Bridge before looping back up past Berg-en-Dal to Phabeni Gate and home. We turned onto a narrow dirt track and around the very first bend came upon a pack of about 12 wild dogs. For a few seconds they lay quietly in the road. Then suddenly they jumped up and were off - following whatever sound or scent had caught their interest. Five seconds later - and they’d completely disappeared. This image demonstrates the responsible use of a bright spotlight. The Civet was photographed in Punda Maria camp about 20 meters from us and you'll see that the spotlight beam is pointed behind the civet and there isn't even a reflection in his eyes. There is a red filter that you can buy as an accessory, BUT this filter will cut down the light intensity by up to 50% and if you are photographing you will end up with a red subject! This red filter is used primarily by hunters who do not want to spook the animal - if you shine a bright light at an animal in the Kruger they are accustomed to lights so in most cases will not run away - and if the beam is annoying them they will simply turn their back - animals are not helpless! I hope this convinces you that we don't need to be paranoid about using spotlights in national parks and therefore we don't need to 'leave our spotlights at home' or ban night drives! For those people who don't like spotlights - don't buy one.
