This dramatically scenic northern Drakensberg escarpment route is close to the Kruger National Park. It includes such sights as Gods Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, many beautiful waterfalls including the Mac Mac, Lisbon, and Berlin Falls. The Blyde River Canyon is the third deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia but is the deepest green canyon in the world with regular rainfall. Pilgrims Rest is an old gold mining town preserved in its entirety. The Long Tom Pass rises to 2300 metres before descending to the Kruger National Park which is below 400 metres. The pass is named after the canon manufactured by Le Creuset in France, with which the Boers bombarded the advancing British, and of which a replica stands at the top of the pass.

You never know what will be around the next corner in the Kruger National Park. On our final morning, we were heading south towards Crocodile Bridge before looping back up past Berg-en-Dal to Phabeni Gate and home. We turned onto a narrow dirt track and around the very first bend came upon a pack of about 12 wild dogs. For a few seconds they lay quietly in the road. Then suddenly they jumped up and were off - following whatever sound or scent had caught their interest. Five seconds later - and they’d completely disappeared. The famous LubyeLubye rocks at Lubye Lubye bridge near Lower Sabie camp. We have seen both a leopard and pride of lions on these rocks. We spotted the leopard over a kilometer away from the bridge, heading towards Lower Sabie camp, with a lot of cars following him. We decided to get away from the traffic jam and wait on the bridge as we knew these rocks are a hotspot for leopards. Our gamble paid off as the leopard appeared on the rocks about 20 minutes later.
