NLRB rules that any union busting triggers automatic union recognition
Tonight (September 6) at 7pm, I'll be hosting Naomi Klein at the LA Public Library for the launch of Doppelganger.
On September 12 at 7pm, I'll be at Toronto's Another Story Bookshop with my new book The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation.
American support for unions is at its highest level in generations, from 70% (general population) to 88% (Millenials) ā and yet, American unionization rates are pathetic.
That's about to change.
The National Labor Relations Board just handed down a landmark ruling ā the Cemex case ā that "brought worker rights back from the dead."
https://prospect.org/labor/2023-08-28-bidens-nlrb-brings-workers-rights-back/
At issue in Cemex was what the NLRB should do about employers that violate labor law during union drives. For decades, even the most flagrantly illegal union-busting was met with a wrist-slap. For example, if a boss threatened or fired an employee for participating in a union drive, the NLRB would typically issue a small fine and order the employer to re-hire the worker and provide back-pay.
Everyone knows that "a fine is a price." The NLRB's toothless response to cheating presented an easily solved equation for corrupt, union-hating bosses: if the fine amounts to less than the total, lifetime costs of paying a fair wage and offering fair labor conditions, you should cheat ā hell, it's practically a fiduciary duty:
https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/468061
Enter the Cemex ruling: once a majority of workers have signed a union card, any Unfair Labor Practice by their employer triggers immediate, automatic recognition of the union. In other words, the NLRB has fitted a tilt sensor in the American labor pinball machine, and if the boss tries to cheat, they automatically lose.
Cemex is a complete 180, a radical transformation of the American labor regulator from a figleaf that legitimized union busting to an actual enforcer, upholding the law that Congress passed, rather than the law that America's oligarchs wish Congress had passed. It represents a turning point in the system of lawless impunity for American plutocracy.
In the words of Frank Wilhoit, it is is a repudiation of the conservative dogma: "There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect":
https://crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/liberals-against-progressives/#comment-729288
It's also a stunning example of what regulatory competence looks like. The Biden administration is a decidedly mixed bag. On the one hand there are empty suits masquerading as technocrats, champions of the party's centrist wing (slogan: "Everything is fine and change is impossible"):
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/10/the-courage-to-govern/#whos-in-charge
But the progressive, Sanders/Warren wing of the party installed some fantastically competent, hard-charging, principled fighters, who are chapter-and-verse on their regulatory authority and have the courage to use that authority:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/18/administrative-competence/#i-know-stuff
They embody the old joke about the photocopier technician who charges "$1 to kick the photocopier and $79 to know where to kick it." The best Biden appointees have their boots firmly laced, and they're kicking that mother:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/16/the-second-best-time-is-now/#the-point-of-a-system-is-what-it-does
One such expert kicker is NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo. Abruzzo has taken a series of muscular, bold moves to protect American workers, turning the tide in the class war that the 1% has waged on workers since the Reagan administration. For example, Abruzzo is working to turn worker misclassification ā the fiction that an employee is a small business contracting with their boss, a staple of the "gig economy" ā into an Unfair Labor Practice:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/01/10/see-you-in-the-funny-papers/bidens-legacy
She's also waging war on robo-scab companies: app-based employment "platforms" like Instawork that are used to recruit workers to cross picket lines, under threat of being blocked from the app and blackballed by hundreds of local employers:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/30/computer-says-scab/#instawork
With Cemex, Abruzzo is restoring a century-old labor principle that has been gathering dust for generations: the idea that workers have the right to organize workplace gemocracies without fear of retaliation, harassment, or reprisals.
But as Harold Meyerson writes for The American Prospect, the Cemex ruling has its limits. Even if the NLRB forces and employer to recognize a union, they can't force the employer to bargain in good faith for a union contract. The National Labor Relations Act prohibits the Board from imposing a contract.
That's created a loophole that corrupt bosses have driven entire fleets of trucks through. Workers who attain union recognition face years-long struggles to win a contract, as their bosses walk away from negotiations or offer farcical "bargaining positions" in the expectation that they'll be rejected, prolonging the delay.
Democrats have been trying to fix this loophole since the LBJ years, but they've been repeatedly blocked in the senate. But Abruzzo is a consummate photocopier kicker, and she's taking aim. In Thrive Pet Healthcare, Abruzzo has argued that failing to bargain in good faith for a contract is itself an Unfair Labor Practice. That means the NLRB has the authority to act to correct it ā they can't order a contract, but they can order the employer to give workers "wages, benefits, hours, and such that are comparable to those provided by comparable unionized companies in their field."
Mitch McConnell is a piece of shit, but he's no slouch at kicking photocopiers himself. For a whole year, McConnell has blocked senate confirmation hearings to fill a vacant seat on the NLRB. In the short term, this meant that the three Dems on the board were able to hand down these bold rulings without worrying about their GOP colleagues.
But McConnell was playing a long game. Board member Gwynne Wilcox's term is about to expire. If her seat remains vacant, the three remaining board members won't be able to form a quorum, and the NLRB won't be able to do anything.
As Meyerson writes, centrist Dems have refused to push McConnell on this, hoping for comity and not wanting to violate decorum. But Chuck Schumer has finally bestirred himself to fight this issue, and Alaska GOP senator Lisa Murkowski has already broken with her party to move Wilcox's confirmation to a floor vote.
The work of enforcers like DoJ Antitrust Division boss Jonathan Kanter, FTC chair Lina Khan, and SEC chair Gary Gensler is at the heart of Bidenomics: the muscular, fearless deployment of existing regulatory authority to make life better for everyday Americans.
But of course, "existing regulatory authority" isn't the last word. The judges filling stolen seats on the illegitimate Supreme Court had invented the "major questions doctrine" and have used it as a club to attack Biden's photocopier-kickers. There's real danger that Cemex ā and other key actions ā will get fast-tracked to SCOTUS so the dotards in robes can shatter our dreams for a better America.
Meyerson is cautiously optimistic here. At 40% (!), the Court's approval rating is at a low not seen since the New Deal showdowns. The Supremes don't have an army, they don't have cops, they just have legitimacy. If Americans refuse to acknowledge their decisions, all they can do it sit and stew:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/26/mint-the-coin-etc-etc/#blitz-em
The Court knows this. That's why they fume so publicly about attacks on their legitimacy. Without legitimacy, they're nothing. With the Supremes' support at 40% and union support at 70%, any judicial attack on Cemex could trigger term-limits, court-packing, and other doomsday scenarios that will haunt the relatively young judges for decades, as the seats they stole dwindle into irrelevance. Meyerson predicts that this will weigh on them, and may stay their hands.
Meyerson might be wrong, of course. No one ever lost money betting on the self-destructive hubris of Federalist Society judges. But even if he's wrong, his point is important. If the Supremes frustrate the democratic will of the American people, we have to smash the Supremes. Term limits, court-packing, whatever it takes:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/20/judicial-equilibria/#pack-the-court
And the more we talk about this ā the more we make this consequence explicit ā the more it will weigh on them, and the better the chance that they'll surprise us. That's already happening! The Supremes just crushed the Sackler opioid crime-family's dream of keeping their billions in blood-money:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/11/justice-delayed/#justice-redeemed
But if it doesn't stop them? If they crush this dream, too? Pack the court. Impose term limits. Make it the issue. Don't apologize, don't shrug it off, don't succumb to learned helplessness. Make it our demand. Make it a litmus test: "If elected, will you vote to pack the court and clear the way for democratic legitimacy?"
Meanwhile, Cemex is already bearing fruit. After an NYC Trader Joe's violated the law to keep Trader Joe's United from organizing a store, the workers there have petitioned to have their union automatically recognized under the Cemex rule:
https://truthout.org/articles/trader-joes-union-files-to-force-company-to-recognize-union-under-new-nlrb-rule/
With the NLRB clearing the regulatory obstacles to union recognition, America's largest unions are awakening from their own long slumbers. For decades, unions have spent a desultory 3% of their budgets on organizing workers into new locals. But a leadership upset in the AFL-CIO has unions ready to catch a wave with the young workers and their 88% approval rating, with a massive planned organizing drive:
https://prospect.org/labor/labors-john-l-lewis-moment/
Meyerson calls on other large unions to follow suit, and the unions seem ready to do so, with new leaders and new militancy at the Teamsters and UAW, and with SEIU members at unionized Starbucks waiting for their first contracts.
Turning union-supporting workers into unionized workers is key to fighting Supreme Court sabotage. Organized labor will give fighters like Abruzzo the political cover she needs to Get Shit Done. A better America is possible. It's within our grasp. Though there is a long way to go, we are winning crucial victories all the time.
The centrist message that everything is fine and change is impossible is designed to demoralize you, to win the fight in your mind so they don't have to win it in the streets and in the jobsite. We don't have to give them that victory. It's ours for the taking.

š This is a list with hyperlinks to books that have teacher/student, age gap, and experienced/less experienced themes that I have read! These are in order from most recommended to least recommended based on my opinion.
š This will be updated as I read more! Think something should be added to the list? then let me know!
š Happy reading!
āļø= highly recommend/changed my life
š= no smut

PROFESSOR/COACH BOOK LIST
The Unrequited by Saffron A. Kent-āļøš
ProfessorxStudent & mental health themes
Cute little poet embarrassingly falls for her grumpy professor. Beautiful slow burn and perfectly describes what it feels like to want someone and not feel enough for them. She is such a realistic female lead and reminds me a lot of yāall š. This is THE teacher crush community book. If you donāt read anything, read this!!
The Professor by Invi Wright-āļøš¶ļø
ProfessorxStudent
Cute romance by young, new, and self published author. Very relatable female lead. If you enjoyed The Unrequited, you will like this book for all of the same reasons. Quick and easy read, only 240. She isnāt perfect, sheās clumsy, and I wouldnāt even say sheās socially awkward, sheās just a normal college student in her early 20s. Sheās a fun narrator. This author has a lot of potential and her writing will only get better.
Gabrielās Inferno by Slyvain Reynard-āļøš
ProfessorxStudent
Such a good dark academia book. Beautifully written and actually has a movie adaptation. I would definitely recommend this if you want a realistic couple but a bit more serious. Characters have so much depth
Off Balance Series by Lucia Franco- š¦
CoachxStudent
Warning: female lead is age of consent NOT legal age.
If you want something really forbidden and fucked up, read this. If you want the MOST insane sex scenes, read this (MINORS STOP). I really donāt even want to add this series to this list but for the girls who wanna go there, have fun. I started this when I was still in high school, read the 3rd one as an adult, itās not as easy to read now. Take that info as you please. With that being said, itās one of the best writing and plots Iāve ever read. Lucia Francoās other work is š
The Professor by Skye Warren-š¶ļø
ProfessorxStudent
Also an ex-boyfriendās dad book! This book was amazing! Read it in a day and immediately pre ordered the second. The plot twist in this book made me throw my phone! Narrator/FMC is a bit less relatable for me. Has a secret society plot! Potentially brooding Professor
The 4th Degree by Nikki Castle- š¦
MMA CoachxStudent
Warning: parent death & parent w/ chronic illness
Coach is so broody but has a big heart, he just doesnāt like to show it. FMC has so much depth and is really mature for a 19 y.o. Coach is a quiet character with a dirty mouth. Doesnāt talk much but when he does??? The tension between them is chefs kiss. Not too much a a slow burn. āWill they, wonāt they, will they, wonāt theyā vibes.
Lessons In Sin by Pam Goodwin-š¶ļø
TeacherxStudent with 18 Y.O female lead
Troubled rich girl gets sent off to a catholic boarding school and falls for the asshole Dean of the school. Smut is pretty good, plot works. Iām not going to say itās bad, I think whether or not itās enjoyable depends on the person. It wasnāt bad, I just wasnāt obsessed. If youāre just trying to live vicariously through her (arenāt we all), then it works!
Teach Me by L. L. Ash-š¶ļø
ProfessorxStudent
Really good start, and I do mean GREAT startā¦ I just feel like the sex scene came too soon (Ch. 9/32) and it threw me off but I also like SUPER slow burns. Itās still a good book. I enjoyed the male love interest, Professor Harlo. Theyāre cute together. Grump and Sunshine.
Waking Olivia by Elizabeth OāRoark
CoachxCollege Athlete & mental health themes
Great concept! Rare that you see two moody & broody MCsā¦ not my favorite execution of it. Itās not so bad that i think itās objectively bad. I could see where someone else likes it. But I donāt. Why are they grumpily ogling each others bodies by the 3rd chapter? If you just need ur fix, it works. Has potential
Dark Notes by Pam Goodwin-
TeacherxStudent & themes of abuse
Probably DNF-ing
AGE GAP BOOK LIST
Something In The Way Series by Jessica Hawkins-āļøš
Sisterās Boyfriend/Husband & āI saw him firstā
Most beautiful romance series Iāve ever read, best written books by Jessica Hawkins. I recommend all of her other books. Lake is 16 when she first meets Manning but nothing sexual happens between them for another 3 books until sheās in her 20s. Beautiful slow burn with characters full of depth.
Sinner by Sierra Simone- āļøš¦
Brotherās Best Friend & religious themes
Amazing character creation and mapping. These characters feel real! This book is about āteachingā a girl about sex before she becomes a nun. Itās not just a bang bang, hump hump book. It has heart and it really good. If you enjoy religious themed romance, you may enjoy Priest by Sierra Simone too. I didnāt š
Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas- š¦
Exās Dad
Most popular forbidden romance so whatever youāve heard about it, dump it. This might be the most tame book on this list. Pacing is good, well written main character. Insane amounts of smut but it doesnāt drive the story forward so feel free to skip it if you get tired.
Love Unexpected by Q. B. Tyler- š¦
Ex Stepdad & parent death
This book is HOT! However after the first few scenes, I got a bit tired of the smut. Well written enough female lead with a rushed ending. However if you just need something to read and not despise it, itās good enough.
Strictly Off Limits by Jessica Hawkins-š¶ļø
Dadās Best Friend
Jessica is my favorite author so Iām a bit biased but she definitely isnāt a smut writer. This novella wouldāve been better without smut however it isnāt super present and doesnāt really drive the story forward so donāt feel like youāre missing anything if you skip the smut!
The Doctor by Nikki Sloane- š¦
Exās Dad
personally didnāt care for this book, smut starts off way too quick and Iām more of a slow burn girl. It is a novella yet, it was still too quick. However! You may love it <3
š If Iām not reading fast enough for you and you want to see what I will be reading in the future here is my Amazon TBR, have at it!
š If you want to see a more organized bookshelf of what Iāve read, here is my Goodreads!

Choi Han sees a weird stick in Caleās hair.
āOh, wait Cale-nim, let meā¦ā With the slight height advantage, Cale doesnāt actually have a choice but to let the swordmaster do as he wishes.
For moment he fiddles around, trying to grab the elusive, tangled object, when he suddenly feels Cale lean into his hand. He watches with bated breath as Cale closes his eyes.
(āAh, Iām so tired that Iām leaning on Choi Han. Aigoo, he must think Iām pathetic.)
Choi Han spends another minute to get the stick out, claiming that it was particularly stuck in his long hair. He burns this memory into his mind while also promising to never tell another soul.
Eruhaben is next. He notices the red headās soft locks, freshly washed and neatly air-dried with magic. As a dragon, he doesnāt think twice about the temptation, standing from his spot on the couch to test if Caleās hair is even half as soft as it appears to be.
It is, he learns.
(Cale shivers. Is Eruhaben threatening him? Just in case, Cale bows his head to hide his fearful expression.)
The dragon watches with amusement, thinking that itās only natural to offer oneās head to a dragon as powerful as him. Until he feels Cale almostā¦ press into his palm absentmindedly. Eruhaben vividly feels the exact moment that his heart melts into a puddle of affection.
He definitely will use this against the bastard next time he has the opportunity.
Oddly, On and Hong figure it out next. Cale is sitting in his usual chair, reading a book with his hair falling into his face picturesquely. On recalls when Rosalyn did her hair up with a pretty pin, making it easy to move around without getting in her face.
On considers if Cale would mind On experimenting a little, immediately coming to the conclusion that he wouldnāt give two shits.
She transforms into her human form and moves behind the chair. Of course, Cale doesnāt bat an eye at her unusual movements. When she gathers his hair up in her hands, he doesnāt miss a beat, leaning back to give her better access. He only changes the angle of his book so he can still read. Hong observes his sister from Caleās lap with curiosity.
Her upbeat attitude is ruined quickly because she doesnāt know how to braid nor tie up hair, and is missing the necessary bows and pins to do it in the first place. She runs her fingers through his vibrant red hair as she tries to remember what Rosalyn did.
Hongās eyes go wide. Cale had stopped reading as his sister continued her ministrations, closing his eyes and leaning back, relaxing into his seat. Hong urgently signals for his sister to witness this.
Her eyes narrow in on the sight with a calculating gaze. She changes the way her hands run through his hair, simply running her fingers through and carefully untangling it instead. Caleās face gradually loses its constant pinch.
(āYes, the children should do whatever they want, even play with my hair.ā Cale internally nods to himself.)
On, unlike Choi Han or Eruhaben, tests her limits. She continues her gentle pattern without pausing. After a few minutes, both of the cats hear Caleās breathing taper away into a relaxed rhythm. On silently makes eye contact with her brother, and they make a secret promise to not make a big deal about this, lest this trick never work again.
They hear Ron before he enters the room and On casually returns to her car form, stealthily and softly landing on Caleās lap. Ron enters, pausing at the sight of his puppy young master.
Smiling benignly, he darkly assumes that Cale had been so exhausted that he managed to fall asleep in the middle of reading.
On and Hong donāt correct him.
If Cale has an especially bitter lemon tea that night, he doesnāt make a big deal about it. Not when the crown prince calls him soon after it arrives.
He arrives at the palace where the Crown Prince learns of this spreading secret. Cale uses his superior glib tongue to force a frown on Alberuās exhausted expression, and the exasperated hyung sighs, walking around to the couch where his dongaeng is sprawled. He places a hand on his shoulder, threatening Cale with a high political position if he doesnāt stop doing dangerous things and causing trouble.
Cale shudders and agrees. Alberu smiles at this, his hand moving to ruffle his adorable dongsaengās hair.
(Cale sighs, closing his eyes and humoring his affectionate hyung. He leans back, questioning why everyone has been so touchy lately.)
Alberu feels his heart stop and stutter at the fragile sight. Cale looks completely at ease, slumped in the couch cushions and pressing his head into Alberuās palm like a cat. His lip is quirked up slightly, but Alberu would bet a golden plaque that Cale hasnāt a single idea on what he looks like right now, otherwise he wouldnāt be even half as relaxed as he is right now.
He resembles a lazy cat. Heās being pet whilst lounging, with a content and pleased expression edging on his face. If this goes on long enough, Cale might even fall asleep.
Alberu continues talking without letting his smile leak through into his words, stroking the top of Caleās head in an absent minded motion.
(Cale ignores the sneaking chill on the back of his neck, too focused on Alberuās words about the kingdom. The petting is a bit strange, but Alberu is the crown prince, so heāll allow it.)
As predicted, Cale doesnāt mention it.
After a minute though, Cale starts to frown, beginning to acknowledge the feeling that heās being scammed somehow.
āHyung, do you have a headache?ā
Alberu acts like a polite and caring hyung, starting to massage Caleās head.
(Cale frowns more. Something is definitely going on.)
Cale opens his eyes, protesting. āYour highness, my health is perfect at the moment. You, our shining sun, couldnāt possibly-ā Alberu changes from massaging to running his fingers through Caleās hair.
(Cale sighs, cutting off. It was just a ploy to play with Caleās hair. He shouldāve expected his highness to scam him in this way too.)
Alberu grins when Cale stops talking, looking resigned to his fate. He goes completely limp, and Alberuās blunt fingernails scratch against Caleās scalp gently. Cale visibly shudders at the feeling.
(āToo scary, what if he scratches and draws blood? If Raon finds out, heās going to feed me soggy apple pieā¦ā)
Alberu preens at finding Caleās weakness.
On slyly asks Rosalyn to do up Caleās hair one day- as an experiment- and is extremely pleased when Cale not only agrees, but he closes his eyes and falls asleep soon after the Mage is done gently tugging his hair into place and adorning it with intricate pins and accessories. Choi Han walks in on this scene and threatens Rosalyn to keep it a secret (after melting a bit on the inside). She agrees with a sly smile.
If only Cale knew how everyone was going to use this to scam him in the futureā¦
Eventually the misconception that Cale likes to have his hair played with goes around the entire group. Cale- of course- is completely clueless. He just thinks that everyone suddenly became obsessed with his hair.
Ron is the only one who canāt get Cale to relax. Even Bud somewhat managed it, but Cale stays vigilant no matter what his old butler does. Ron finds his puppy young master to be amusing.
Cale really doesnāt understand what they want with his hair. Do they want his hair?
(He asks Ron for a trim a few days later. Ron only cuts off the dead ends and leaves it neat but long, much to the young masters displeasure.)
#for the record cale is definitely somewhat enjoying it. heās just oblivious to his own emotions#and ārejects all ideas of enjoying physical affection. bc all he needs is his slacker life and nothing else#so if he gets used to the petting and feels more relaxed afterwardsā¦ itās purely coincidental#tcf#Iāve been mimicking the writing style of tcf recently and Iām not sure if thatās a good or bad thing yet#ā¦ I should write smth and ask my sibling to peer review it and tell me if itās better or worse than my style before#trash of the countās family#lcf#lout of the counts family#cale henituse#choi han#eruhaben#on and hong#alberu crossman#rosalyn tcf#ron molan#not a reblog

By and large I was very satisfied with my books from this month. Read some books that were Goofy As Fuck (affectionate) this month, as well as some excellent nonfiction
Beware of Chicken
I get to kick this month off by being a hater. I was really disappointed in this book. A friend completely loves the series and was convinced it was right up my alley, so I'd gotten it on really high recommendation. The concept is right up my alley (protagonist lives in a cultivation setting, decides he actually hates all the violence and fighting involved in cultivation and instead fucks off to become a farmerā¦ however his rooster then becomes a cultivator in his stead, hilarity ensues!) but the executionā¦ woof. This is the sort of parody that rubs me the wrong way, the sort that comes across as lazy and clumsy and too mean-spirited to be appealing.Ā
The main character is isekaiād (another trope I donāt love as a rule) and he is justā¦ unpleasant. He is a very Standard OP Main Character where everything he does goes well and everyone loves and reveres him with no actual work put in. The way female characters are handled sucks. The only bits I really enjoyed was the roosterās POV and even that began to feel repetitive pretty quickly. I did not finish this book, there are better options out there.
The Disabled Tyrantās Beloved Pet Fish v1
Now, speaking of better books that lightly parody cultivation and isekai stories: tada! This series is ridiculous. It is very very very stupid. The writing is nothing to (hurr hurr) write home about. And I have definitely fallen in love with it, itās good-hearted and silly in a way that feels perfect right now.
The main character, Li Yu, wakes up in a webnovel setting but rather than in the body of a character he isā¦ a fish. The mission heās given is to become the ātyrannicalā fifth princeās beloved pet and help him become a better person than he was in the canonical story. This whole book is some Saturday morning TV slapstick nonsense and it rocks. Li Yu is trying to be Very Sneaky And Cunning and fails it at every possible step. He is very obviously Not A Fish... however it just so happens that his new master knows so little about fish or pets that heās just shrugging and going along with things. Iām very much looking forward to continuing the series.
Escape from Incel Island
I was in a independent book store and this was sitting out on a shelf. I was physically incapable of walking by this and not buying it. So here we are. This is the most deranged little novella you could possibly ask for, and I read it out loud with my girlfriend (while waiting in traffic) and later with my brother. Itās impossible not to laugh.
This story follows Manslaughter Jones, ruthless mercenary, and Dr Morrison who have been sent to the notorious Incel Island to retrieve lost government data. Along the way they team up with a group of Nice Guys, need to fight their way through dangerous forests and hordes of enemies while surrounded by a continual and extravagant spray of blood. What sort of people who were lured to an island prison with the promise of their very own woman upon arrival? You'll soon find out! This is obviously a parody of online incel culture and guns-blazing action movies, with just enough societal commentary to make it feel worth reading.
Honestly, if you want a book that jumps the shark from page one and is unapologetic about it, it's a very fun read. Highly recommend finding someone with a sense of humour to read it aloud with.
The God & the Flightless Messenger
A cute little manga that I was gifted. Itās set on a mountain where gods come and go, inhabiting the various peaks. Theyāre cared for by winged messengers, who tend to their needs and ensure they arenāt contaminated with chaos. Shin is a messenger whose wings never grew in properly, who canāt fly and doesnāt have a god to serve ā until now. Heās sent down to the lowest mountain peak where a strange, new furball-of-a-god has appeared, one that seems to not just attract chaos to it but which seeks it outā¦
An Illustrated History of Urban Legends
A very chill nonfiction book about different aspects of urban legends, from ghost stories to cryptids to aliens. Written for a younger audience in mind, this is mainly just an introduction to the concept, but itās well-written with a reasonably skeptical bend that points out conspiracy theories plainly. As an adult I found it worth reading just to enjoy the art that fills every page!
Old Wounds
This novel wasā¦ fine. Erin and Max, two trans teens, are determined to drive west to California, where they can attend college and live a more open life than they do in their small hometown. Things begin to go wrong though when they find themselves stranded in rural America, surrounded by not just small town bigots but potentially something much more deadly in the woods.
This is billed as a fairly classic ātownsfolk sacrifice outsiders to the local monsterā type of story, which I enjoy, but it fell short on the actual horror elements. There was no point where I was actually scared or worried for their well-being ā it was fairly obvious that these two were safely shrouded in plot armour. However the story itself wasnāt bad. If youāre interested more in an interpersonal drama with a dash of light peril and horror elements on the side, you might enjoy this. If you want something thatās actually scary, try something else.
The Poison Squad
Absolutely phenomenal nonfiction, contender for my favourite book this month. This book delves into the history of the American FDA, and looks at the absolutely nightmarish landscape that existed when companies were allowed to put whatever the fuck they wanted into food completely indiscriminately and without telling anyone about it. All those people who want unpasteurized milk? Wanna know how they used to preserve it long enough to ship to the cities? Fill it with formaldehyde and some chalk powder to make it look white. Enjoy!! There was something very satisfying about watching such a dedicated fight for stricter regulations and consumer protection, mixed with just enough horror at what was being shoved into foods.
It has since been making me side-eye both a) food, and b) absolutely anything that tries to weaken governmental food regulations. Considering the political landscape, it really just makes this book all the more worth reading. On top of the fascinating topic, Deborah Blum has a very enjoyable, narrative writing style that makes it a very easy and enjoyable read (coming from me, who isnāt overly fond of nonfiction in general).
The Poisonerās Handbook
After finishing Poison Squad I wanted to read more by Deborah Blum and found this. You can definitely see how Poison Squad grew out of the initial research that must have gone into The Poisonerās Handbook. This nonfiction book is set during the Jazz Age, all around the time of Prohibition, and follows Charles Norris who becomes New Yorkās first appointed Chief Medical Examiner who pioneers the field of forensic medicine. He plays a pivotal roll in showing how rigorous scientific testing can be used to discern toxicity in humans, solve crimes, protect innocent people from wrongful accusations, and campaign for better safety regulations of poisonous substances. Not quite as well-written as Poison Squad imo, but a very compelling topic.
Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes
Read in honour of Rememberance Day. This is a book I vaguely remembered reading in elementary school, and decided to revisit. Itās just a tiny little chapter book, about a twenty minute read if even, but it hits hard. I remember sobbing as I read it as a kid, and I didnāt fare much better as an adult. Itās a fictionalized account of a real Japanese girl, Sadako, who was born just after the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. It follows her eventual diagnosis with leukemia and the slow death that follows. A very powerful anti-war story, superb if you want to traumatize any young children in your life ā„
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System v4
The final book of the Scum Villain Self-Saving System series, though the main story concluded in book 3. This book was entirely filled with additional ābonus storiesā and honestly itās just convinced me that more series should do this. There was something really fantastic about getting to neatly wrap up the series in book 3, but then still having some extra adventures, both pre-, mid-, and post-canon. Some of my favourites included the story that focused on side characters Shang Qinghua and Mobei-Jun and how their relationship evolved over the course of the series, some additional lore for my boy Zhuzhi-Lang, as well as a very amusing āde-ageā story in which Luo Binghe finds himself in a childās body though with all his usual memories and feelings. Shen Qingqiu has to deal with a pseudo-toddler who is capable of wholesale destruction ā one who Is Not Happy about being mistaken for Shen Qingqiuās child, and who wants people to stop propositioning this āsingle fatherā already, he is right here!!! These stories were mostly fun and silly with a few heart-wrenching ones mixed in for good measure.
The Swiss Family Robinson
A childrenās classic that Iāve always meant to get around to. It was published in 1812??? I had no idea it was actually that old! Though man, once you start reading it You Can Tell...
For those who somehow donāt know the premise, The Swiss Family Robinson is about a (Swiss) family (named Robinson) who are shipwrecked near a deserted island. They then have to make their way to shore and figure out a way to survive. You see them meet all sorts of animals, scavenge for supplies, and build up a home on their island paradise.
Now, as far as it coming out in 1812ā¦ I can see why this would appeal to people at the time. It was a power-fantasy set during a time when sea exploration was The Hot Thing. There were all sorts of exotic animals! It tried to offer up what was probably New And Exciting Science! Unfortunately, from a 2024 lens, it is all completely insane and wrong. Kangaroos, buffalos, ostriches, jackals, elephants, vultures, anacondasā¦ the entire world is condensed onto this singular island! Donāt even get started on the plantlife! And every single animal here is destined to be hunted and shot. We are very gun-happy in this book.Ā
My other main condemnation of the book (because letās be honest, the science can be forgiven when the time period is taken into account) is that it is profoundly boring. There are no big problems. There is no difficulty. If a problem arises, itās easily and perfectly solved by the father within the same paragraph. It makes for a slightly surreal reading experience and not one I'm eager to repeat. I've heard the Disney version at least includes pirates so I might try watching that, just so this boring as fuck colonialist narrative can get spiced up a little...
When Women Were Dragons
Hands down the best written book Iāve read this month which I was not expecting. Iāve seen this bookās name get bandied about, but always with pretty mixed reviews. Well, after finishing the book and diving into the goodreads comments to see what the heck people are going on about, Iāve concluded that the reading comprehension on this site is worse than I imagined.
So, from the top, let me make it abundantly clear: this is not a fantasy adventure. It will not read like a fantasy adventure. It is, arguably, not even fantasy! Despite the dragons! This book is 100% an example of pure, uncut magical realism and it has to be read allegorically. If you are reading this literally, Iām sorry but you are reading it wrong and I wouldnāt be surprised if you didnāt enjoy it.
This story is set during the 1950s, in a time surrounding an event known as āThe Mass Dragoningā when thousands of women suddenly, spontaneously, transformed into dragons and flew away. The story follows Alex Green who was a child during this event. Her aunt transformed. Her mother didnāt. Both of these things have profound impacts on Alex as she grows up, and a womanās role in society, a womanās anger, her joy, her desire are all questioned and explored. What does it mean for someone to stay, for someone to leave, and for someone to be left behind? What does the transition between first and second wave feminism look like? It is a heavy book but beautifully written and incredibly poignant. So many times I was left in speechless awe. This is really a masterpiece, and if you like dissecting literary works I canāt recommend it enough.
This Months Notable Absentee:
Whoops, I was doing Dracula Daily and completely forgot about it during the long slow section after the October whammy, so I did not end up finishing it on time.... š« expect that on Decembers book round up!

Some of my favorite moments from DC's Super-Pets Special: Bitedentity Crisis one-shot. Most are awesome / wholesome in tone, exactly what you'd expect from a super-pets book. Highlight for Refuge by Michael W. Conrad and Sami Basri, a story about Damian's bat-pets that can totally be read as a meta-commentary on the place these animals can occupy in superhero stories. How they are inevitably put aside and how this can reflect the way we treat animals (especially the less conventionally domesticated ones, cows, chicken, dragons...) in our own society. It's a very touching and surprisingly thought-provoking story.
Another highlight is the Bitewing story, Pup, pup and Away by Tony Fleecs and Mike Norton, funny, lightheaded and cute, with a high count of obscure super pets (I was almost expecting Itty to show up, not this time sadly, Green Lantern's sentient alien starfish friend remains a hidden deep-cut). All the stories in the book are somewhat good and have something to offer, I didn't really care for the Watchmen parody story though. If you're expecting Detective Chimp or other cool DC primates to appear here that's not the place for you for there's another one-shot solely dedicated to them, the Ape-Ril Special #1.

"Pet": Pretty Woman, But Gay
So I read the Captive Prince series way back in like, 2016, and read the first few short stories and never read the fourth one because I wasn't a fan of the character it would focus on. And then through a weird set of circumstances I found myself reading this short story this past week, and it might be one of my favorite short stories ever.
I'm posting under a cut because the series is very adult, and the short story and series itself contain triggering content.
Ancel is definitely a favorite character of all time now, which is impressive especially since I hated him. But that's kind of what CS Pacat does well--she writes unlikable characters who are indeed truly flawed and not just soft babies inside, and then makes you like them by showing their development without completely changing who they are as characters. It was the main strength of the original Captive Prince trilogy, after all--Laurent's development still remains one of my favorite character arcs of all time.
So really, I don't know why I was shocked at what she did with Ancel. Especially because the whole reason I hated Ancel was the same incident that made me dislike Laurent: a scene in which Laurent uses Ancel to sexually assaults Damen. And I still do think that particular scene is the biggest flaw in the series, because it's kind of glossed over in a lot of ways. Admittedly, that's still the biggest flaw of "Pet" as a story, too: that the story frames Ancel's low moral point as what he does to Erasmus, which is portrayed as an escalation of what he does to Damen, when I'd argue it's the opposite.
Yet, seeing things from Ancel's perspective--how desperate he is to matter, how he genuinely has only ever been used and so doesn't understand why other slaves wouldn't even try to perform and enjoy the meager scraps of joy they get in life--changed my perspective on him. Not on the incident, but on him.
Ancel's a brilliantly written unreliable narrator, too. As confident and vain as he seems, he's all too aware that he doesn't matter in the court. As much as he hates Damen and Erasmus for the former's refusal and the latter's inability to play the role, it's really self-hatred projected onto them. We see bits and pieces of this seeping through in his conversations with Berenger, such as him telling Berenger in a moment of delight:
"I'd even sleep with you. I might even enjoy it for once." He stopped. "High praise," Berenger said dryly.
Ancel doesn't enjoy a lot of his life. But he'd never admit it, because he lacks control over pretty much every aspect of his life and so seeks to keep control over his thoughts by lying to himself. And yet, paradoxically, he's still one of the few people at court who is usually honest with others.
All of this is why Berenger is such a great love interest for Ancel. Berenger prizes honesty, but also freedom. He buys Ancel but refuses to sleep with him because he knows Ancel doesn't really want to, no matter what sweet nothings Ancel whispers in his ear. He respects Ancel's autonomy in ways no one else ever has, and he sees him as a person first and foremost.
Normally stoic "good guys" aren't super interesting as love interests for me. I like angsty tortured souls, Byronic bastards. But Berenger works perfectly in the story, and is no less interesting as a character than Ancel. To be fair, part of this is because everyone in Vere is insane and debauched and there needs to be one normal one there, and that's Berenger. Yet there's intrigue, too: why Berenger bid so highly to buy Ancel in the first place is never directly stated, but what he does say is that Ancel:
You took on every councilor in that room and won.
It wasn't the physical performance, but Ancel himself, his psychological performance. It serves as a metaphor for the overarching plot of the Captive Prince series, wherein the lowly and those who have everything against them end up taking on far more powerful individuals and systems and winning.
Which makes the last line of the story all the more fitting:
But if he wins?
Ancel may not be a pure-hearted individual, but all along he's showing Berenger that it is possible for those who have less to win, and to be loved and give love. He gives Berenger hope for the future, for the coming coup. And as we all know, Laurent does win, and I can only presume Ancel and Berenger live happily ever after.
My second complaint about the series is that the ending is too abrupt even if the ending line is perfect because that's my complaint about the trilogy too.

š« In a Jar by Deborah Marcero
Rating: šššš/5
Llewellyn is a collector. He gathers things in jars and soon meets Evelyn, becoming quick friends. They start collecting together, reminders of all the time they spend together. But when Evelyn has to move away, Llewellyn wonders if they can continue their friendship, but from afar?
This book pulled at my heart. Itās so sweet and I love how wholesome of a friendship Llewellyn and Evelyn have. They collect amazing things- like rainbows, the sound of the ocean, and even the newness of spring! I also liked the message in the book that our relationships can survive through big changes, and that there are always more friendships right around the corner.
Thank you @the-forest-library for this one!

I absolutely do not recommend this coffee shop, 0/10. First the waiter absolutely refused to take my order, and then he proceeded to jump the counter and then crawled under the tabel and chairs. I don't understand how they can have employees like this. Extreme unperfessionalism.

Because of the emotional trauma everyone had gone through during Tetro Danganronpa Pink Chapter 2ās Class Trial, I thought I would post a picture of my cat to cheer everyone up.
