I came to Palm Island two seasons ago, confused about my life and desperate for a change. The island drew me in, but I’m still not sure why.

Maybe it’s time I cut my losses and go back home, back to med school like I always planned.

But when the breathtaking, flirtatious, tattooed bartender I’ve been crushing on for ages offers to let me room with him this off-season, there’s no way I’m leaving now.

I can’t believe I’ve lived here this long without truly appreciating everything the island has to offer: the beauty of its untouched nature, how to catch a wave, the appeal of casual s… well, you know. But Ten seems determined to make sure I experience every last one, and then some.

Will this be the last off-season I spend here or could this thing between Ten and I be perfect?

My Thoughts

What happens during the off-season on a resort island? A lot. A lot happens. The permanent residents of Palm Island are no strangers to a good time. This is clear. But the relationships between them all is a fair bit to untangle. And I feel like we’re still just dipping our toes in the water with Ten and Bambi.

Bambi has had a crush on Ten for as long as he’s been working on the island. And that crush just amplifies when Ten offers his spare room to Bambi when he needs a new place to call home. But it doesn’t take long for Ten to notice Bambi in a whole new light. (And if you haven’t noticed, everyone on the island tends to go by a nickname, which just adds more that needs untangling.)

As they grow closer as roommates, they realize they have a lot more in common than they first realized. But they also differ in very complimentary ways. And the more they learn about each other, the closer they become, and the more they seem to truly care about each other.

But of course, there’s some uncertainty hanging in the air. Bambi has some things he needs to figure out, and he’s not sure how Ten fits into those things. But he learns to lean on his friends for support. He talks to them, and he supports them in turn.

While I loved watching the relationship between Ten and Bambi grow and develop and really take root, it was honestly lovely to see the friendships that Bambi and Ten have developed grow and be nurtured as well.

I think that’s what I’m enjoying most about this series so far, even though it’s just the beginning – seeing the different kinds of love and affection between the residents of Palm Island. They’ve really established themselves as a found family, even with all of the intermingling drama that I’ve yet to discover.

No matter how complicated or dramatic things get between the people in this group, they will always love each other unconditionally. They will always have each others’ backs. And that’s wonderful and beautiful.

We’re starting this series off with a very lovely roommates to lovers, low angst, high heat couple. But I have a feeling there are more intense sparks coming as the series goes on. And I honestly can’t wait to get to know all of the permanent residents of Palm Island like I’ve gotten to know Ten and Bambi.

I don't even know how to word this in a way that makes sense and I think in an overall world building sense this is a major case of "Man I think it depends" but I actually don't think Spite is a "demon".

Spirits and Demons are essentially the same, yes, and I think there's much to be said about this in in parallel to a healthy person vs a deeply traumatized person, but to quote Neve, "one is more likely to manipulate you, or kill you," etc etc.

A demon is a spirit whose purpose has been twisted. And I don't think Spite's purpose has been twisted much at all.

Determination's purpose is "accomplish my goal (whatever that may be)". Spite (the emotion)'s purpose is exactly the same, with the added benefit of "especially against the wishes of others".

I think the demonic version of Determination would be "Ruthlessness", not Spite.

Spite (the guy) is not wholly consumed by his purpose like other "demons" are. He doesn't pursue his goals at the expense of his companions. He has several other interests even if they seem a little silly (learning what tastes good, or even new forms of combat like fire). And he tells us his purpose several times...it's his promise with Lucanis! Escape, kill, and live! This goal is one of determination and it has not changed by his becoming Spite. The goal is not warped in any way even with his joining to Lucanis.

Bellara speculates as to why Spite doesn't just take Lucanis over or turn him into a nasty mound of flesh. I want to argue that this is because Spite is a named spirit, not a demon.

What's more spiteful than not allowing your captors to change you? What says fuck you to people who would use you as a tool than self-determination? What's more spiteful than being determined to be free, to fight who would enslave you, to live?

My working theory is that Spite is not a demon in the same sense as, say, Wisdom being corrupted into Pride, which twists a desire to guide, teach, or navigate situations with care into a desire to be right and unchallenged.

I think Spite is to Determination as Eulogy is to Compassion.

I have never understood a character like I understand Tawan from P10L. Look at him: he’s out there just, living on the beach, making cool jewelry and selling it at a pop up shop that only opens when he feels like it and only sells to people when he likes their vibe. For the Spitfire AU does Zuko give up his search for Aang then?? How do the Gaang end up meeting bcuz I can't think of a reason for him to be near the south pole otherwise. And does Iroh still go with him?

Zuko's main priority in the Spitfire AU is protecting Lu Ten II. His little brother's safety means the world to him—Zuko would do nothing to endanger that peace, fragile as it may be.

So Zuko pretends to still be loyal to his Father and quest. Openly deflecting would only put Ten Ten in danger, and he can't protect the kid from Ozai or the horrors of war. So he stays quiet, simmering, even if the lack of action kills him on the inside.

Zuko teaches Spitfire to be honorable, just, and kind in a world that has forgotten gentleness. Zuko trains Lu Ten II in self defense because the world only knows the language of war.

Zuko and the Crew say that little Ten Ten is an orphaned stowaway they found and adopted so he could work on the ship. He's an adorable rascal who enjoys to run off when they're on shore leave and get into trouble for helping those in need.

It's no wonder that the Gaang meets little Ten Ten in a pirate-ridden harbor town, only to then find out just who his older brother is.

(Zuko had no reason to fight, before. He had no real power to change things, no real chance to end the war on his own. But now the Avatar is back. Now the world stands a chance.)

(And isn't it fitting that it all comes down to a group of children, anyway?)
