Robert Magoolagan, portada de Aaron Stainthorpe, lanzado por Peaceville Records. Fascinante álbum que reinventó el género del doom/death metal. Alejándose casi por completo del death metal brutal, My Dying Bride se centró en pasajes de densos y calmosos riffs y atmósferas penumbrosas, creando cuadros desoladores, profundamente góticos. El poder está presente, y "Your River" es un ejemplo perfecto, mi favorita, que avanza con una buena secuencia de riffs aplastantes para caer en un abismo de terrible pesadumbre, y la voz de Aaron que pasa de lo gutural a lo limpio, de lo brutal a lo doloroso con gran elocuencia. Cada tema de este disco es una obra maestra de doom/death metal de fúnebres dimensiones, desolador, descarnado, abismal. Obra definitiva del doom/death metal que dejó escuela en posteriores bandas de densos y siniestros avances, desde Anathema hasta Ataraxie, Mournful Congregation, Saturnus, Evoken, In The Woods..., Woods Of Ypress o más recientemente los españoles de Onirophagus.

Tuesday, August 22: Katatonia, "Rein"

Jonas Renkse fully took over songwriting for Katatonia on City Burials, essentially committing the band to the more progressive direction that The Fall of Hearts first presented.  To that end, the riffing wasn’t overly complex or technical, but laid an atmospheric foundation for Roger Öjersson to craft interesting leads and for Daniel Moilanen to power the narrative (and steal the show) with his jazz-inflected drumming.  All of this was in service of increasingly enigmatic and downcast but not self-indulgent or whiny songs, and “Rein” captured the band’s approach in full: the track wasn’t very long, but it captured a variety of dynamics in such a subtle manner that on first listen it was easy to overlook everything that was going on within the song.  Everything cohered into a moody whole, with even Renkse’s vocals floating over everything and creating a corresponding narrative alongside Moilanen.  It didn’t necessarily grab attention the way The Fall of Hearts did, but “Rein” showed that Katatonia had successfully found a way to build on their template without falling back on formula.

ERIC CUTLER (guitarist): "Kev Walker had an idea for an autopsy painting. We didn’t give him a lot of detail like we did for the original cover. Once we saw it, we liked it. But we never talked with him. Both Kent and Kev came up with such different ideas. (The cover) was just Kev doing his interpretation of a zombie autopsy. We were in Belgium in a pub the first time we saw it in about 1991."

CHRIS REIFERT (drummer/vocalist): "Peaceville was thinking about making an alternate to get more distribution, and we just thought it was cool to have more art. We liked the first cover but it was two for the price of one. I don’t know how (label founder) Hammy knew Kev. I think it’s the only album cover he’s ever done. Now he’s doing "Spider-Man" and "James Bond" comics. I think I talked to him on the phone once or twice. I did relay that there was someone named Spike who had done a drawing with zombie doctors. He was this 13-year-old cool kid and we jammed in his garage."
