When Funky Cold Christine Comes Down
Speaking of Read my Body. Didn't someone mention in a fan podcast that Tone Loc was originally invited to the Hot in the Shade recordings to rap on Read My Body? I think it was Paul Halligan Jr. who co-wrote Rise to It as well as Read My Body. Why should one doubt the man, moreover, this idea seems anything but absurd when I can't help but think of Tone Loc's 1989 hit Funky Cold Medina. And when I think of Funky Cold Medina, I obviously think directly of Christine Sixteen. And that means we've already left rap behind us again.
But let's politely take out the guitar part from Christine Sixteen, sampled on Funky Cold Medina, when it has already been served to us so beautifully on a silver platter. And while we're at it, then also also its small, extremely inconspicuous counterpart that can be found on Crazy Nights' When Your Walls Come Down. And by small I really mean just teeny tiny small. Just listen to it. Some of you might say: "Yes, of course, exactly! Ha, ha!". But maybe in the end the exact opposite will come out of it. And then, of course, I would look pretty stupid. Well, that's a risk I'm willing and have to take. But it is only up to you, anyway. Always.
I recommend that you only let these small sections run for 1-2 seconds at a time and then refresh the page, because it just whizzes by so quickly. So, click play, and be quick. Or be a lazy egg:

Paying off plot threads that have been brewing since 2019’s House of X and Powers of X, Fall of X will determine if mutantkind’s prosperous Krakoan Age can truly last forever or if its foundation has doomed it from the start. Today, fans can check out the covers for X-Men titles on sale in July, the month before Fall of X officially begins. These issues represent the final chapters of Krakoa as…

what distinguishes Islam's relationship to the other Abrahamic religions and their texts from christian-style supercessionism? i mean i know that historically Muslim communities have often been better at religious plurality than christian ones, i just don't know what theological/structural factors contributed to that
From a purely neutral perspective, Islam has a concept called Tahrif, which translates to corruption or alteration. The idea is that the previous scriptures have either been tampered with or altered to such an extent that they aren't fully recognized as the 100% written word of God. Thus the Qur'an is established to function, not to replace the previous scriptures, as a new set of laws and guidelines for mankind. Although Islamically, the previous scriptures are considered corrupt, Islam does not reject Judaism or Christianity and do not consider either of them false, this is why the Qur'an refers to them as the People of the Book. For more information, see: the Consitution of Medina.
In terms of the Torah, the Qur'an expresses that the books of Moses are holy, but have been altered or tampered with to such a point that the book no longer could be considered the authentic word of God. However, the laws established are still binding to the Children of Israel. However, the Islamic concept of Tahrif is not concerned with the idea of denying the Laws of Moses, but rather see it as a law exclusive to the children of Israel, thus Muslims hold Paul the Apostle with animosity for tampering with Scripture and annulling various laws incumbent upon the Jewish people. Muslims deny that Jewish people killed Jesus, therefore rejecting the idea of deicide, since Muslims don't believe Jesus was God, nor do they believe that he died on the cross, so there was never a New Covenant formed in place the Old Covenant. As for the gospels, Islam does not recognize the four gospels as being part of the Holy canons, but hold that Jesus, the Prophet, was the Gospel, and that he was the Scripture, the Word so to speak. The Qur'an refers to the Gospel in a singular term, the Gospel of Jesus. Jesus preached his message and there were scribes who recorded his words, but those words have gone missing or have ever since been burnt by the Church, thus we do not have a Gospel of Jesus as we understand it in the Qur'an.
The important part to understand is that the Qur'an is not a book of historicities or chronological events, it is a book of laws and regulations.. Various biblical stories are brought up to establish the reason behind an established law, such as the impermissibility of eating pork.
Yes, there is the idea of supersessionism, but not in the style of Christianity.

In COVID-19 patients, neurological symptoms last up to three years - Published Aug 15, 2024
Effects include brain fog, fatigue and depression
Scientists from Northwestern Medicine and the School of Medicine at CES University and CES Clinic in Colombia have determined that more than 60% of people who contracted COVID-19 have neurological symptoms that impact their cognitive function and quality of life, even two and three years after COVID-19.
This finding resulted from a study with the longest follow-up time conducted in Latin America and was led by Dr. Igor J. Koralnik, chief of neuro-infectious diseases and global neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Dr. Carolina Hurtado Montoya, with the School of Medicine at CES University in Medellín.
This study, the first in Colombia and Latin America to analyze persistent neurological symptoms, cognitive function and quality of life in long COVID-19 patients, demonstrates that the neurologic manifestations of long COVID are as frequent in Colombia as they are in the U.S.
The process Between April 2023 and December 2023, researchers evaluated the long-term effects of COVID-19 in a group of 100 Colombian patients, which included a group of 50 people, average age of 51, who presented moderate or severe disease and were hospitalized at the CES Clinic in Medellín. The other group of 50 patients were not hospitalized, had mild COVID-19 and were an average age of 36.
Among the most significant findings, the symptoms of ‘brain fog,’ characterized by cognitive dysfunction, was experienced by 60% of patients and fatigue was experienced by 74%. These two symptoms, along with depression, most affected their quality of life and cognitive function, in both the group of patients who required hospitalization (moderate and severe COVID-19) during the acute infection, and in people who had mild COVID-19.
These results were published August 13 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience. The research group is finalizing details to begin a second phase of the study, focused on cognitive rehabilitation, to improve the functionality and quality of life of these patients. From this new effort, researchers expect to adapt and test a protocol that can later be implemented as a service at the IPS Universidad CES in Sabaneta, Antioquia, Colombia.
The numbers The most common neurological symptoms in patients with long COVID-19 were ‘brain fog’ in 60% of patients, muscle pain in 42% and numbness or tingling in 41%. Non-neurological symptoms were fatigue (74%), sleep problems (46%) and anxiety (44%).
Both patient groups also performed worse on processing speed and attention than the general population, the study reports.
“‘Brain fog’ and fatigue remained persistent regardless of the duration of long COVID, underscoring the need for comprehensive and long-term care for those affected by this condition,” the authors wrote.
Notes This analysis also involved medical students, physicians, neurology residents, neurologists, and researchers from CES University and CES Clinic, Diego Fernando Rojas-Gualdrón, Esteban Villegas Arbeláez, Salvador Ernesto Medina Mantilla, Mariana Campuzano-Sierra, Santiago Ospina-Patiño, Mariana Arroyave-Bustamante, Valeria Uribe-Vizcarra, Daniel Restrepo-Arbeláez, Paul Cardona, Julián Llano-Piedrahita, Santiago Vásquez-Builes, Esteban Agudelo-Quintero, Juliana Vélez-Arroyave, Sebastián Menges, as well as the team from Northwestern University including Gina S. Pérez Giraldo, Millenia Jiménez, Janet Miller and Yina M. Quique.
This collaboration was initiated by Dr. Gina Perez Giraldo who went to Medical School at CES University in Medellin, and was the recipient of a Global Neurology fellowship from the Havey Institute of Global Health at Northwestern.

Not to make absolutely everything about fandom but speaking of Oscar movies and academia aesthetics I've been thinking of a The Holdovers AU in the Gilmore Girls-verse, with Jess as Angus, the kid that gets stuck at the boarding school over Christmas, but I can't figure out who should be Paul Giamatti Hunham.
My first instinct is Luke because they have the tightest bond in the show and a lot of the conversations between the leads feel like they would hit home with Luke and Jess respectively and together. Also Luke as the teacher would make it easier to sneak in Lorelai as the cute woman with cookies with a conveniently aged teenage relative (niece in the movie, daughter for Lorelai) who hits it off with Angus. But for Luke to work you'd either have to make a pre-established familial relationship that changes the movie-relationship between the leads or you'd have to make an AU where Jess and Luke aren't related.
Second instinct is Max Medina because you get past the family ties-issue and can still sneak Lorelai and Rory in the exact same way. But the thing is that Max is canonically a really nice and really different teacher from Paul Hunham so you'd either completely change the dynamic between the two and lose the point of the AU or you'd have to make Max Medina really OOC.
You could try to push in other teacher characters for Paul Hunham, but none of them have enough characteristics or staying power to work, or they're Asher Fleming... and I don't think anyone wants Asher Fleming as Paul Hunham.
Then I got a thought that I have no idea how to deal with so now you have to as well: Taylor Doose as Paul Hunham. No he's not a teacher and yes I usually am a big fan of trashing on Taylor (personality, as a character he's brilliant). But. It actually makes sense. Him and Jess never get along, Taylor's incredibly difficult to work with and refuses to do things any other way than his own but he also really loves and cares about what he does and believes in his work as something that helps and uplifts the community of Stars Hollow (not unlike how Paul Hunham genuinely wants to prepare and educate the next generations of students). And if someone made it work it would actually be a little ingenious to see an AU where Taylor and Jess actually find common ground and help each other. The Lorelai swap in could be weird but you could also just remove the romantic tone between them and focus on Paul-Taylor's social isolation.
But I still have no idea who to put in as the Mary Lamb stand-in, like how could anyone in Gilmore Girls fit her character-arc??

Sunburst Finish - my (other) favorite David Tennant audio drama
Hello again, everyone! Today we'll be discussing David's 2002 audio drama, Sunburst Finish!
A bit ago I did a long discussion thing about one of my favorites of DT's audio projects, the 2003 audio drama Tuesdays & Sundays by Daniel Arnold & Medina Hahn. Today's deep dive is into my other favorite audio drama - 2002's Sunburst Finish by Andrea Gibb, with Paddy Cunneen.
I say "other favorite" because boy, do I do a lot of flip-flopping between these two audio dramas. One day one will be my all-time favorite, but then if you ask me the same question the next week, you'll probably get a different answer. They're both just SO stellar, and David is sublime in both. So don't ask me which one I prefer!
Speaking of Gibb and Cunneen - Sunburst Finish isn't the first (or last) time David's worked with them. In this earlier thread I discussed 1997's Bite, a fantastic short also written by Gibb, with music composed by Cunneen.
Here's a little bit about the author(s): Andrea Gibb is an award-winning Scottish screenwriter/actor. As an actor she's best known as Deirdre in All Creatures Great And Small, and as a screenwriter? You name it! Dear Frankie, Call The Midwife, AfterLife, Mayflies...I could go on and on! Her ex-husband Paddy Cunneen is an award-winning Scottish theatre director, playwright and composer for radio, TV and film. Some of his best-known works include scores for Boy A, King Lear and Twelfth Night, and for his plays Fleeto and Wee Andy. He's also an Associate Music Director of the Cheek by Jowl Theatre.
Throughout David's career, he and Cunneen have worked on many of the same projects. Other than Bite and Sunburst Finish, Cunneen's composed the music scores for three more plays starring David: 1995's An Experienced Woman Gives Advice, 1999's Vassa, and 2003's The Pillowman.
But back to Sunburst Finish! I don't know half as much about this play - what was its inspiration (was it based in real life events?), was it written specifically for audio, was the lead character called 'Davey' by coincidence or specifically for David, what if anything was the significance behind the title Sunburst Finish, etc? - as I'd like to know. But I'll tell you what I do know: Sunburst Finish was produced by BBC Radio, and broadcast on BBC Radio 4 as the Friday Play. It went out at 9-10pm on 24 May 2002. David played Davey, the lead role. It was directed by Gaynor Macfarlane. Other cast members were Julie Austin as Amy, Ewan Stewart as Uncle Gus, and Helen Lomax as Georgie.
It's hard to talk in-depth about the plot of this audio without giving the thing away, but here's a little something from The Guardian (trigger warning - references to self-harm). It describes the play as follows: "Davey is a gifted music undergraduate with plenty of friends, who appears to have everything going for him - except that he doesn't want to live."
And also, here's the play's BBC Genome entry:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It appears the play was received very well, for in 2004, Gibb and Cunneen adapted 'Sunburst Finish' for the stage. Some 2nd year acting students from David's alma mater, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (the RSAMD, now the Royal Conservatoire) put on a production. On 23 February 2004, it was performed at the Dundee Repertory Theatre (in association with the Rep).
The production was also performed at the Tron as part of the RSAMD student Play:ground season, and ran for one night only on 3 March 2004. Emun Elliott (Black Watch, Star Wars, Guilt and Game of Thrones) played Davey, and Paul Blair played Uncle Gus. The Scotsman had this to say about the play: "...Here, though, the subject is the confusion and despair of a final-year music student who - despite the concern of his parents, sister and girlfriend, and the gruffly affectionate care of his uncle Gus, an aging rocker turned sheep-farmer - finds the darkness in his mind too much to bear. There’s a conventional hint of untold family secrets and lies at the root of the boy’s despair..."
Tumblr media
Announcement of the play's performance at Glasgow's Tron Theatre
But back to David's version! For a brief and glorious period in 2018, Sunburst Finish was uploaded to the Internet Archive. It was swiftly removed because REASONS, but many (me-me-me-me!) got to enjoy it, including this iconic moment when Davey sings Nirvana's 'All Apologies' with his uncle Gus, and this adorable little singy-song to Semisonic's 'Secret Smile'!
If you're interested in the play and want to read it, you can...sort of? If you can find the stage screenplay adaptation, that is. One was published in 2004 by Capercaillie Books Limited, but it's sold out everywhere I looked - and as I really wanted one, believe me, I've looked!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also a printed version available at the University of Glasgow, though! It's a 103 pg 4th draft script of the audio play - not the stage adaptation - and it's held in the Scottish Theatre Archive collection. Wish I'd read it when I was doing my postgrad work at the University in 2018-2019, but I had so many other things on my research plate, it (sadly) slipped through the cracks.
And that's it for 'Sunburst Finish' - and this edition of Obscure DT!
