We decided to stop by Costco for lunch because I had a hunger that only $1.50 hotdogs could satisfy. I went in the exit confidently, tired and barely managing to pilot my flesh body into the gauntlet of Costco the week before a holiday.

A brightly smiling lady accosted me to ask for my Costco card. I pulled up in befuddlement, and said, “I’m just going to the food court.”

“We need it for you to enter the building,” she said while showing every one of her teeth.

I stood there with my last two brain cells popping and fizzling in my fatigued brain with a slowly rising indignation. I’ve never been carded on my many food court forays, besides which it’s just untrue.

You need to go in the exit to get a membership, you can’t checkout without the card, and you can’t access the shipping area from the exit side.

With ill concealed disgust I started rifling through my wallet, knowing the card was there somewhere but having less than no idea where.

“How’s your day going?” She chirped, “It’s sure raining!”

I have a strict code of conduct to never be rude to service people that was suddenly butting against my anger at her ruthless and unnecessary bureaucracy so what came out of me was an indeterminate noise that was somewhere between a growl and a “fine”.

I took so long finding it that she was starting to radiate smugness that she’d stopped a non card carrying member from getting a damn hot dog. When I finally unearthed it her smile only flickered slightly as she wished me a nice day.

Don’t you guys love it when you’ve escaped a cult and then you have to see some true crime podcast looking girliepop outside with a shirt that says like “Let’s Join a Cult 🩷💅🏽✨” and you understand your anger towards her is probably unfair bc like its weird that that’s commodified anyway and Online creates a distance and disconnect between reality and certain ideas that seem like pure fiction because they haven’t been personally experienced but sometimes really selfishly you wanna go up to those people and just start trauma dumping nonstop until they feel something which is stupid and childish bc you don’t even need everyone to understand or feel bad for you you just want to release anger lmao
