Kazunari: *Sigh*… I’m so excited, my heart’s thumping! I’ve been waiting for the new release in this pirate movie series for so long. I’m super pumped!

Banri: Same here. There's some foreshadowin’ that hasn't been revealed yet from the last one.

Kazunari: Yeah! Like what’s going on with that knife? I’m hyped!

Banri: Oh, it looks like it’s startin’.

-pause-

Kazunari: The movie was totes amazing!

Banri: It was better than I expected. The story development was good too.

Kazunari: It looks like it’s a hot topic on social media. Lookie, everyone’s sharing their opinions.

Banri: It’s a testament to your research skills to be able to pull that info up that fast.

Kazunari: Hehe. This stuff’s my specialty! I know they’re saying it all over social media, but this series really doesn’t miss, huh~? The scene where the two enemies joined forces was so intense!

Banri: Yeah, that was pretty lit.

Kazunari: Right! It was super duper cool~. You know, I couldn’t help but remember Summer troupe’s play as I was watching the movie.

Banri: Oh yeah. You mean Sky Pirates? That play was pretty wild and hilarious, I gotta admit. It was loaded with Summer troupe’s signature comedy.

Kazunari: It sure was! We added tons of adlibs and different jokes every day.

Banri: ‘Cept you were the only one on the navy’s side, right?

Kazunari: Yeah! I felt a bit lonely because of that. I was happy when Kumopi became Paul’s underling in the rerun though!

Banri: Personally, I wanted to see more of Paul in action.

Kazunari: That’d be amazing! I’ll show off my super dashing swordsmanship! If I’m gonna do more action scenes, then I gotta ask you to teach me.

Banri: Well, I can at least support you… Hit me up if there’s a chance.

-pause-

Kazunari: Home sweet home.

Banri: We’re back.

Izumi: Ah, welcome back. Kazunari-kun, you’re just the guy I’m looking for!

Kazunari: Hm? What’s up?

Izumi: It’s about that project where we’re going to deliver spin-off stories of the side characters.

Banri: Ah. Each troupe member is supposed to do one each, right?

Izumi: Yeah, exactly. We got the results from the survey for which side character Kazunari-kun is going to play.

Kazunari: Ooh, who, who!? Which role is it!?

Izumi: For Kazunari-kun… Paul was chosen!

Kazunari: …For real!?

Banri: Talk about timin’.

Idk why the fucken... Divide between "it was alternate universes" & "Paul is just trans" ideas for Petscop has to be torn into a cavern. Paul being trans DOES make sense, but requires you to ignore huge details that immediately make it not work. The alternate universes DO kind of make sense, but require you to extrapolate out a lot of info purposefully left unshown.

It's hard to describe what i want to say, here -- i do think Paul being trans makes sense, 'splains why he & Care "look eeriely similar," you could argue he's just thoroughly blocked out that part of his life enough to have forgotten Care entirely, etc. I like it, & i keep it as i also say "Yeah, it's that & the universes theory." It's not two switches that demand you can only flip on one of them -- you can have both. You can have neither. Do whatever

Fumito Ueda was inspired by… The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et l'Oiseau).

The King and the Mockingbird was clearly an inspiration for both Hayao Miyazaki and Fumito Ueda*. I've taken so many screenshots that look like scenes in The Castle of Cagliostro, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus that I can't include all of them in one post, so first I'm going to show you the ones that look like Ico. *In an interview for the 5th issue of Playstation Magazine (Italy) (July/August 2024), translated for a tumblr post by selene-lunette, Ueda named Paul Grimault as a source of inspiration. Le Roi et l'Oiseau has also been photographed on one of Ueda's bookshelves.

A chimney sweep and a shepherdess are the young couple escaping the castle, prefiguring Ico and Yorda. They come to life from paintings hanging next to each other and the reason they need to escape is because a painting of the king has also come to life, has got rid of the actual king, and is determined to marry the shepherdess.

The narcissistic king has winged servants who chase after the shepherdess and the chimney sweep like the flying monkeys of The Wizard of Oz and surely inspiring the shadow creatures in Ico. I wonder if their design might come from the caped policemen that the French (and British) used to have.

The mockingbird of the title looks after four hatchlings. One of them keeps getting trapped in a cage and on one occasion is freed when the cage falls to the ground and breaks open, just like when we first encounter Yorda in Ico.

Towards the end, the king is trying to get away with the shepherdess, who is his unwilling bride. He steps onto a balcony area which then moves away from the palace and is revealed to be the helmet of the king's enormous robot, so it's like a combination of the retracting bridge from Ico and Malus in Shadow of the Colossus.

Not long after, it is the king, rather than our hero, who gets hit by a falling rock as the castle crumbles.

The soundtrack - When we’re looking at the paintings of the shepherdess and the chimney sweep (at 16 minutes 30 seconds) we hear a harpsichord melody called ‘La Bergere et le Ramoneur’ that's strikingly similar to 'Castle in the Mist'. Also, whenever the shepherdess and the chimney sweep need the mockingbird's help, they call out ‘Oiseau’ (pronounced ‘Wuh-zoh’) the way Ico calls out ‘Ontwuh’.

Ico's horns - They don't feature in this animation but perhaps they should because.... The King and the Mockingbird was adapted from a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale called The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep. It tells the story of a shepherdess who is told she has to marry a creature with horns and the legs of a goat (a description of a satyr).

Is it any surprise at all that a fairy tale as beautiful as Ico should turn out to be traceable all the way back to none other than Hans Christian Andersen?
