I've heard some homophobic people say that now it's popular to support people and our church members are taking the easy way by not calling gay people to repentance. I don't see it that way and wondered what you think when people say that
I wouldn't say it's "popular" or "taking the easy way" for a Mormon to be affirming of queer people and supportive of their full inclusion in the LDS Church.
In 2023, professors still can lose their jobs at the church's BYU schools if they stray too far from the LDS Church's homophobic and transphobic teachings despite what the science and consensus is in their fields. Members who post support on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media can expect pushback from other members.
While our church leaders may have softened their rhetoric and made some changes, such as allowing people to keep their temple recommends even if they support gay marriage, the core beliefs on these topics haven't changed much. So no, I wouldn't say it's "popular" in the LDS Church to stand for full equality and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.
With that said, certainly it's easier in 2023 than it was in 2013, easier than it was in 2003, easier than it was in 1993, easier than it was in 1983, easier than it was in 1973 for a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be affirming of LGBTQ+ people and to come out of the closet as yourself, at least in the USA.
We can thank queer people like Bayard Rustin, Christine Jorgensen, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Frank Kameny, Harvey Milk, Gilbert Baker, Leonard Matlovich, Steve Endean, RuPaul Charles, Ellen DeGeneres, Elton John, Laverne Cox, Lori Lightfoot and many, many others who were pioneers and moved American society to be more tolerant and accepting of queer people.
And from the LDS Church, a number of individuals have bravely stepped forward and spoken their truth & shared their experience, and that's led to awareness and eventually to increased understanding. People such as R. Joel Dorius, Leonard Matlovich, Paul Mortensen, Stephen Holbrook, Carol Lynn Pearson, D. Michael Quinn, Stuart Matis, Ty Mansfield, Mitch Mayne, Kendall Wilcox, Josh Weed, Dustin Lance Black, Jimmy Hales, Tyler Glenn, Tom Christofferson, Troy Williams, Xian Mackintosh, Laurie Lee Hall, Kris Irvin, Stacey Harkey, David Matheson, Charlie Bird, Matt Easton, Emma Gee, David Archuleta, and many others

Celia Johnson in Brief Encounter (David Lean, 1945) Cast: Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey, Cyril Raymond, Everley Gregg, Marjorie Mars, Margaret Barton, Valentine Dyall. Screenplay: Anthony Havelock-Allan, David Lean, Ronald Neame, based on a play by Noël Coward. Cinematography: Robert Krasker. Art direction: Lawrence P. Williams. Film editing: Jack Harris. Music: Percival Mackey, Muir Mathieson. Brief Encounter is set in 1938, which explains why there is no visual evidence of or reference to World War II, which was still going on when it was made. It also helps explain some of the film's jitteriness or reticence about sex. Why, given the facility with which Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson) lies about her relationship with Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard), don't they just go ahead and have sex? The film is a portrait of prewar middle-class morality, something the war helped break down, especially with the arrival of American troops, proverbially "oversexed and over here," in Britain. When it gained great popularity after the war ended, it was possible to debate whether Brief Encounter was a validation or an indictment of this morality. Is it really healthy for Laura to spend the rest of her life with her pleasantly stuffy husband (Cyril Raymond), dreaming of what might have been? Is it necessary for Alec to uproot his family and emigrate to South Africa just because of sexual frustration? The resolution to their dilemma seems easier to us: We wish Laura and Alec could unbend, the way the working class characters Albert (Stanley Holloway) and Myrtle (Joyce Carey) seem to do. (For all her pretense at refinement, it's easy to see that Myrtle has a healthy off-duty sex life.) But then we get glimpses of the social milieu in which Laura and Alec move: He has to contend with the catty nudge-nudge-wink-wink of Stephen Lynn (Valentine Dyall), the friend whose apartment almost becomes a venue for the consummation of their passion; she is surrounded by friends whose only pleasure in life seems to be to talk. There is a real brilliance in the way which David Lean, greatly aided by Robert Krasker's noir-expressionist black-and-white cinematography, suggests the entrapment of the lovers in a world they are afraid to break out of. Johnson is magnificent, of course, and it was a stroke of genius to cast Howard opposite her. For all his kindness and attentiveness, there is something faintly menacing about him, a hint of danger and possibility that can only attract but also subtly frighten a woman whose life consists of helping her husband with the crossword and spending Thursdays in town returning her library book and shopping for an ugly desk tchotchke for his birthday. Everything in this movie is so well judged and efficiently presented that it only makes me regret that Lean turned from such intimate stories and entered on his epic phase.

The San Quentin Six were six inmates at San Quentin State Prison in the state of California who were charged with actions related to an August 21, 1971 escape attempt that resulted in six deaths and at least two persons seriously wounded. They were Fleeta Drumgo, David Johnson, Hugo Pinell, Johnny Larry Spain, Willie Tate, and Luis Talamantez. The dead included George Jackson, a co-founder of the Black Guerrilla Family; two other inmates, and three guards.
The trial of the six men cost more than $2 million and lasted 16 months: the longest in the state’s history at the time. It was dubbed “The Longest Trial” by Time magazine. Of the six defendants, one was convicted of murder, two were convicted of assault on correctional officers, and three were acquitted of all charges.
During the escape, which sparked a prison riot on the cellblock, Jackson had possession of a .32 caliber pistol allegedly smuggled into the prison by his attorney Stephen Bingham. Immediately after the incident, Bingham fled the country for 13 years. He returned in 1984 to stand trial and was acquitted of all charges in 1986. Bingham’s defense had argued that guards had smuggled the gun to George Jackson, hoping that he would be killed if he used it.
In addition to Jackson, those killed in the altercation were guards Paul E. Krasenes, 52, Frank DeLeon, 44, and Jere P. Graham, 39, and inmates John Lynn, 29, and Ronald L. Kane, 28. Two other officers suffered serious injuries.
Spain was found guilty in the shooting deaths of guards DeLeon and Graham. Pinell was convicted of cutting the throats of guards Charles Breckenridge and Urbano Rubiaco, Jr., both of whom survived. Johnson was convicted of assaulting Breckenridge. There were no convictions for the killings of Krasenes, Lynn, or Kane. Drumgo, Talamantaz, and Tate were found not guilty of all charges, including various counts of murder, conspiracy, and assault. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

"Jury Find John Lynn Guilty of Murder," The Inland Sentinel (Kamloops). October 28, 1913. Page 1 & 4. --- There was little new evidence brought forward yesterday afternoon at the trial of John Lynn for the murder of Joseph M. Pickering on July 9th last at the Queen's Hotel, Kamloops, and the jury retired to consider their verdict at 6 o'clock in the evening to return a couple of hours later with a decision of guilty.
Story of Affray Edwin Anthony Armstrong, George Mottishaw, James Joseph Doran and Richard Burke all bore evidence identical with that tendered by them at the preliminary hearing on July 11th. From their respective narratives it would appear that the accused attached himself to Armstrong Johnson and the deceased whom he accompanied to the Queen's Hotel, where he drank with them. Some words passed in connection with a recitation given by Lynn upon prison life which seemed to be displeasing to Armstrong, and the accused struck Armstrong and brought him to his knees. Shortly after Pickering struck the accused, all unaware, a most violent blow from behind, closing one eye completely, and felling him to the ground. He then proceeded to belabor him until called upon by those standing near to desist. Then helping the accused to the ground, Pickering expressed regret for his severity, offered to pay the expense of medical attention for Lynn, and asked him to take a drink, and also to wash the traces of the struggle from his face. Lynn declared that he was a good looser, however, but some minutes later he was looking at his bruised face in the glass and endeavoring to soothe the pain, when suddenly he wheeled round, a revolver in his hand, and fired at Pickering. The shot took effect and the victim sank to the ground, Lynn meanwhile covering him with the revolver. The others. hurried from the bar-room and Lynn backed to the door and made his escape.
Additional witnesses yesterday were Mr. J. A. Gill, who gave proof of the accuracy of some, plans exhibited, and Mr. David Wyse who spoke of the accused's concealment and arrest.
The story of Mr. Wyse was'to the effect that he observed Lynn pass the windows of his blacksmith's shop, and later found him in a space at the rear. Lynn was sitting down holding a handkerchief to his face. Some time after a man informed witness of the shooting that had taken place at the Queen's, Hotel, and Wyse then went back to where Lynn was, and learning from him that he had received his injuries at the Queen's Hotel told him that a shooting affray had taken place there, whereupon Lynn stated that it was he who had fired the shot. He added that he wished he had killed witness. There was nothing, however about his conduct to create fear, and when the Chief of Police arrived in response to the summons of Wyse, the latter did not caution the Chief to exercise care as the man was not in a dangerous mood. Lynn had not caused witness any alarm.
Closing Speeches. Mr. A. D. MacIntyre for the defence made a strong and eloquent appeal, full of restrained but passionate pleading. The affair, he said,
was the result of a drunken quarrel originating in drink as was borne out by the evidence of Dr. Burris and by the associated facts. The victim, a strong working man himself under the influence of drink, had assailed the accused with brutal violence, had knocked him to the ground and had then maltreated him so unmercifully that even the bar-room habitues, innured as they were to such affrays, were constrained to interfere and call upon Pickering to desist. This awful beating left Lynn so dazed and crippled that the deceased had to help him up, and the medical evidence showed that he was still suffering from the effects of it, and was not in a normal condition an hour later. The accused had no thought of murder: he fired one shot only, and was unaware that he had killed Pickering. Had he designed Pickering's death he could have fired again, but in a bemused condition after the first shot he sought out a retired place where he could nurse his injuries.
At the time of the shooting the man was incapable of reflection. He had been bereft of his faculties by a brutal beating, and his act was not one of premeditation but was committed in blind rage and pain. Lynn was not an assassin, and the powers of the jury enabled them judge between murder and manslaughter.
Speech For Crown. Mr. H. W. R. Moore for the Crown said the effect of the pleading for the defence was to suggest that a man could in Kamloops arm himself with a deadly weapon - enter an hotel in broad daylight - force himself upon a party drinking there, and when not welcomed knock a man down, and in the subsequent trouble shoot a man-and then claim irresponsibility of action.
The evidence showed that the man talked intelligently, that he was not irresponsible, but was burning with murderous rage. The deceased had tried to make amends in every possible way for his assault upon Lynn, but five minutes later, after an interval for reflection, Lynn shot at and killed Pickering.
Summing Up. The Judge in a clear and concise summary laid the salient features of the evidence before the jury, to whom he explained the circumstances under which homicide might be reduced to manslaughter. The point to be considered, he said, was whether the crime was committed in the heat of passion under sudden pro- vocation, before a man of ordinary temperament would have time for his passion to cool.
The jury retired at six o'clock, and a little later the Court was adjourn- ed until eight when a verdict of guilty was brought in.
Throughout the proceedings, Lynn did not display any perturbation, and he received the death sentence with a smile. The unfortunate man, who is condemned to hang on Dec. 29th, has an unenviable record as he has previously suffered jail sentences of 14, and 3 years respectively, as well as other punishments.
[Lynn would not be executed, but his sentence commutted to life in prison. When transferred to the British Columbia Penitentiary, he was found to be 'insane' by the prison doctor, and sent to the Mental Hospital on Vancouver Island. He escaped from there in 1921, and was later arrested and convicted in Saskatchewan and spent some time there. He was then paroled, and ended up penniless and alone in 1939 in Toronto - and ended up back in the Penitentiary.]

EDITOR: Many wonderful people in our community have similar goals for good things in our area. I have said before that I am not a social media person. I like my news printed. People have shared with me some negative and untrue things that are aired in public. I’m always sorry to hear of those things and never understand why some insist on running people down. My Daddy used to say “If people are talking bad about me, they are letting someone else rest.” My Dad taught me a lot in his short 54 years on earth. I cherish his lessons that live in my heart. So, the next time you hear of others tearing each other down, just think of the time they are wasting and how that same energy could be used doing something good. And if you are a social media writer, remember another lesson we should all live by: “If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything.” Maybe a face-to-face conversation makes clearer understanding than socializing to all. Jottings from Jeannie: Mrs. Hall's Birthday Tradition Good friend, Susan, shared this tidbit with me. On her birthday, Mrs. Hall, an elderly widow, always invited neighbor Susan, a busy graduate student, over for a cup of tea and fancy cupcake. "OH! Susan, it's so nice to share time just with you!" Mrs. Hall would declare. An exquisitely wrapped birthday gift and fresh flowers decorated the tea table. Susan's contribution to the yearly celebration was usually a cookbook. Don't feel sorry for Mrs. Hall. She had friends and family who took her out to eat and brought her tokens of their affection. However, THE BIRTHDAY GIFT and THE FRESH FLOWERS were gifts that Mrs. Hall presented to HERSELF. Susan remembers one celebration in particular. It was bitterly cold, but yellow roses brought sunny joy to teatime. And her present to herself? Mrs. Hall had it wrapped and waiting to be opened since last summer! It was a delicate child's tea set! " I couldn't resist this! I'll display it, and then someday I will give it to my Granddaughter!" Miz Jeannie loves ALL, All of Y'ALL!!!

Why Juneteenth? President Biden signed Junteenth as a federal holiday in 2021. Actually, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in 1865 in the United States. This was the beginning of a long battle to abolish hatred and separation that divided people with different skin colors. On June 19th, 1964 Segregation was outlawed when the United States Congress passed the Civil Rights Act after a long battle in the Senate. Held up by Southern Democrats who filibustered for 3 months, President Lyndon Johnson, a Southern Democrat himself, warned his peers with the threat of not seeing another Southern President for a century. Johnson said: “We believe all men are entitled to the blessings of liberty. Yet millions are being deprived of those blessings … because of the color of their skin. The reasons are deeply imbedded in history and tradition and the nature of man…...it cannot continue. … Our constitution … forbids it. The principles of our freedom forbid it. Morality forbids it. And [now] the law … forbids it.” * To me, Juneteenth celebrates the ones who gave their lives or who did not remain silent to bring equality to all of God’s children. LRM
ASHTON RECALLS: DAR STUDENT FROM 1942-46 RECALLS EXPERIENCES - (Thirteenth Installment of Pauline Kelley Cannon's Memoir). . .After I finished the ninth grade I worked all summer in the office to pay my tuition. . .There were large boxes of clothes and shoes that the DAR ladies sent to the school to be sold at the rummage sales, and we had to sort and itemize everything. We would also write letters to the ladies, thanking them. . .I also cut stencils and ran the mimeograph machine in the office. We never knew there was such a thing as a computer. . .Most of the girls who came back to work during the summer stayed in the South Carolina Building. Sometimes after work we would go to the attic and bring old mattresses down and put them on one side of the living room floor to do our exercises. We had a lot of fun but the next morning we would have aching muscles. Fortunately, all of the soreness would be worked out as we did our jobs. . .THE SCHOOL HAD A GLEE CLUB and I wanted to join, but prospective members had to try out before a group of judges. The first time I tried out I was not accepted, but I didn't give up. I tried out two more times, and the third time I was accepted. . .I thoroughly enjoyed Glee Club. One of our highlights would be Founders Day, when we would sing for the DAR ladies. Other students would also perform, displaying their special talents, and we would make speeches, using the skills we had learned in public speaking class.--TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK
