While the film is in English, Santa Sangre is a Mexican and Italian co-production that features a truly bizarre tale that has to be seen to be believed. The less said here, the better – it’s so much better to join the Grue-Crew to revisit this unpredictable, gorgeous, must-see mind-bender.
At the time of this writing, Santa Sangre is available to stream from Shudder, AMC+, Screambox, Kanopy, and Tubi, and is available on physical media from Severin in three releases: Blu-ray (2011), 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray (2021), and a 4K Ultra HD 4-Disc Limited Edition Collector’s Set (2021). Both 2021 releases are made from a 4K scan of the original negative supervised by the director.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Crystal, will be The Boogey Man (1980), directed by Ulli Lommel and featuring the formidable John Carradine … and a mirror? This should be a fun one!

Tim Holt, Humphrey Bogart, and Walter Huston in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (John Huston, 1948)
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett, Barton MacLane, Alfonso Bedoya, Arturo Soto Rangel, Manuel Dondé, Jose Torvé, Margarito Luna. Screenplay: John Huston, based on a novel by B. Traven. Cinematography: Ted D. McCord. Art direction: John Hughes. Film editing: Owen Marks. Music: Max Steiner.
It's always shocking to realize that Humphrey Bogart failed to be nominated for an Oscar for his performance as the bitter, paranoid Fred C. Dobbs, the anti-hero of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I mean, who today remembers some of the performances that were nominated instead: Lew Ayres in Johnny Belinda (Jean Negulesco)? Dan Dailey in When My Baby Smiles at Me (Walter Lang)? Clifton Webb in Sitting Pretty (Lang)? To the Academy's credit, John Huston won as both director and screenwriter, and his father, Walter, won the supporting actor Oscar -- the first instance of someone directing his own father to an Academy Award for acting -- which his smartly delineated old coot certainly deserved. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre has a generosity of characterization in both the screenplay by John Huston from B. Traven's novel and the performances of Bogart, Walter Huston, and Tim Holt. Let's also put in a word for Holt, who had one of the odder careers of a potential Hollywood star: He gave good performances in some of the best movies to come out of the studios in the 1940s, including The Magnificent Ambersons (Orson Welles, 1942) and My Darling Clementine (John Ford, 1946), and was a handsome and capable presence in them. But even after working for Welles, Ford, and Huston, after The Treasure of the Sierra Madre he went back to performing in B-movie Westerns, which had been the stock in trade of his father, Jack Holt (who has a small part as a flophouse bum in this film). Tim Holt's heart seemed not to be in the movie business, and he retired to his ranch, making only a few appearances after 1952. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was mostly filmed on location -- a rarity for the time -- in the state of Durango and the town of Tampico, Mexico. (Some scenes had to be shot in the studio, of course, and it's easy to spot the artificial lighting and hear the sound stage echoes in these, which don't match up to the ones Ted McCord filmed on location.)

Tumblr media
ACAPULCO, Gro.

CMCS At Nineteen
By Frank J Casella, CMCS Co-founder & Executive Director
Tumblr media
It seems like nine years instead of another ten. What was supposed to fill the void in 2004 that Deacon John Rangel and I felt from not having (spiritual dialog with) a Catholic men's conference has turned into an annual event, as well as a blog, with engagement both online and offline.  Over the years I have personally, and continue to have, done everything at all costs so there is not that void again in Chicagoland. As result, hundreds of men have attended our events and made a (re)commitment to their relationship with Christ and role as a Catholic man, and this turned into thousands of followers locally, and those who've since moved away, to keep in touch.
Our average event may have had around one hundred, however, it's how the 'regulars' who keep coming back year after year, and the first timers, blend in together in such a way you can't tell the difference between the two. We all have a different spiritual temperature, and thus each of us have different needs for our spiritual growth. Likewise, CMCS has had different people as a part of the Advisory Team because of the different 'seasons' or (growth) needs for this apostolate to evolve.
The one constant has been our local Vicar, His Excellency Bishop Joseph Perry.  He has been a fixture like he'd be there forever, but it doesn't, because of the mandatory retirement rule for Bishop's. Maybe it won’t be accepted immediately, we can hope. You have seen Bishop Perry in the public moments at our events and with his articles on our blog. What you may not have seen is how he opened many doors for our mission, mentored my own writing on the blog, and was always engaging with the functioning of this apostolate, including how our stewardship be debt free and that we follow the magisterial teachings of the Church, short of the long.
But all of this I'm sharing does not even put a dent in what he has done for all of you and your Catholic manhood, we hear from you on this all of the time.
Before I get too far ahead, I want to look at the past to thank some people who've helped us make it this far:  David Taylor,  Deacon James Norman, Tim Becker, Sister Kathleen Sinclair, Mike Hoffman, Peter Palanca, as well as the present CMCS Team: Deacon Alfred Coleman, Oscar Griffin, Jr., and Terry Shelley.  Both Deacon John and I are deeply grateful and overjoyed by your belief and service in this mission.
At a time when many Catholic men's movements seem to be ever increasing, and each serving a different vice or need by Catholic Men, CMCS has been consistent about living the goodness (virtues) of a Catholic man to make Christ the center of his life. This means to focus on the foundation and fundamentals of our faith. Men's ministry is really very hard, and the main things that keeps us from folding up (as many have) is first those of you who donate your money and / or prayers and engage with this mission, and second that we are a rarity as an apostolate of a bishop, and we don't take any of this for granted one second.
Finally, thank you to all of you reading this. You are continuing what you or others have started, and make it possible for others yet to come to keep it going. Why?  Because men need to talk and connect the dots with each other about their spiritual journey as a Catholic man, as we are hard on ourselves until we see other men are experiencing the same things, and share with other men who have solutions to the things we too contemplate and think about. This is why it's important to keep our community local, and our events a manageable size to foster dialog and right action.
I would last but not least like to thank Deacon John Rangel for the God given partnership that we share. It is said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and the support John has provided as Director of Mission, and to me personally (as a shy introvert) words cannot explain.  As well, it seems from the beginning CMCS adopted St. Joseph as our patron saint.  While many have worked hard over the years to sustain CMCS, it's his heavenly watchfulness that really guides our work.

ALBUM REVIEW: Entropy – Force Convergence
ALBUM REVIEW: Entropy – Force Convergence
Formed in 1989, but with less than a handful of full-length studio albums to their name, Canadian thrashers Entropy aren’t exactly the most prolific act in the universe. A seventeen-year absence from 1995 to 2012, and a gap of eight years since their previous album hasn’t helped, but whenever the two remaining original members, vocalist Ger Schreinert, and guitarist Dan Lauzon, do eventually get…

There's tiny bits of washout when the camera is in wideshot due to the spotlights of the stage. Terrific cast and a wonderful tour of this production! A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder - First National Tour - April 24, 2016 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Rapson (The D'Ysquith Family), Kevin Massey (Monty Navarro), Kristen Beth Williams (Sibella Hallward), Adrienne Eller (Phoebe D'Ysquith), Mary VanArsdel (Miss Marietta Shingle), Megan Loomis (u/s Lady Eugenia D'Ysquith and others), Christopher Behmke (Magistrate/Actor/Mr. Gorby), Matt Leisy (Tom Copley/Newsboy/Actor/Guard), Ben Roseberry (Chief Inspector Pinckney/Newsboy/Actor), Lesley McKinnell (Miss Evangeline Barley and others) NOTES: A great capture of the tour. The cast is solid, and the audience is energetic. There are no blackouts, no obstruction, and no washout. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, John and Kevin’s BC/EFA speech, and playbill scans. A+ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Encores! - May 12, 2012 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Megan Hilty (Lorelei Lee), Rachel York (Dorothy Shaw), Aaron Lazar (Henry Spofford), Steven Boyer (Pierre/Louis Lemanteur), Brennan Brown (Steward/Mr. Robert Lemanteur/Gus Esmond Sr.), Stephen Buntrock (Josephus Gage), Simon Jones (Sir Francis Beekman), Deborah Rush (Mrs. Ella Spofford), Sandra Shipley (Lady Phyllis Beekman), Megan Sikora (Gloria Stark), Clarke Thorell (Gus Esmond Jr.) NOTES: Filmed from the back of the balcony. Many heads appear in the frame to start, then when the filmer gets his bearings, the video improves greatly. There are a few times (mostly at the beginning) when the filmer replaces some poor video moments with still shots. These still shots are less than 2 or 3 minutes of the entire show. Overall, a great video, and Megan Hilty is amazing Ghost: The Musical - Berlin - June, 2018 (Rumpel's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Nikolas Heiber (u/s Sam Wheat), Willemijn Verkaik (Molly Jensen), Marion Campbell (Oda Mae Brown), Andreas Bongard (Carl Bruner), Mischa Kiek (Willie Lopez), Nicolas Christahl (Subway Ghost), Klaus Seiffert (Hospital Ghost), Chasity Crisp (Clara), Denise Lucie Aquino (Louise) NOTES: Very Limited trades 3:1 Ghost: The Musical - Broadway - July 28, 2012 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Richard Fleeshman (Sam Wheat), Caissie Levy (Molly Jensen), Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Oda Mae Brown), Bryce Pinkham (Carl Bruner), Michael Bladerrama (Willie Lopez), Tyler McGee (Subway Ghost) NOTES: Great HD capture of the show toward the end of the run. This is a great capture compared the previous one from March, with the changes that were made from the previews and with the original Oda Mae Brown. Despite what the reviews said, this is one show I thoroughly enjoyed and wish it had a better life on Broadway as it deserved! A- Recording with mostly zooms and a few wide shots. Great views of the effects. A Google Drive link is floating around that contains the wrong VOBs for Act 1-3 and Act 2-2; make sure you get everything! SILENCIO (2024) - Trailer from Jonathan Ospina on Vimeo.
2024 | 59' | digital | color | 5.1 sound
A hybrid film that narrates the story of a sound recorder from a big city in Colombia who goes to the jungles in the pacific coast, in search of the sounds from a past that is still haunting the present. A personal journey of listening where she meets local activists of different generations engaged with the preservation of memory, and where music and oral traditions enact as liminal spaces in which mourning invokes and shakes the ghosts of a colonial heritage before the promises of the future.
