I’m just gonna put all the links to the gofundme/tumblr pages of the people who have asked for help. I DON’T have a bank account so I can’t give any money to them even if I wanted to. So maybe whoever stumbles onto my account randomly can donate I guess? I don’t know, only have like twenty something followers and like 15 of them are people asking for help, so I have no real influence.

So someone is in your inbox asking for money

I'm not going to say that every single instance of this happening is a scam, but in my experience, random people following you and then sending you an ask to ask you to reblog a post or donate, they are almost always a scam.

You may feel bad about ignoring them or deleting the ask, but doing so is probably going to be the best course of action. Not only so that YOU don't lose money but so that you don't give the scammer access to you followers.

But how could you know that the person is a scam and not the one instance where someone really needs help? Let's go over some ways to check for signs of a scammer.

this is the post I got in my inbox today. I've personally never dealt with this particular version, so I didn't immediately delete. I probably wouldn't have reblogged anyway, but I wanted to look into this specifically.

The first thing to do is go on their blog. In this instance, the post they want me to reblog is pinned, and it also has a donation link. I'm NOT going to click on the link because there is no indication at all to what this might lead to and I'm going to instead hover over link and see what url pops up

in this instance, the url shows me that I'm going to be redirected to paypal. IMMEDIATELY a sign that this is a scam. people can still scam with gofundme and other sites like that, sure, but at least with those sites, there is some accountability in that you can see if the donation goal is being met or not. with paypal, you're just blindly donating, assuming that this donation amounts are what the person says they're at.

And also this is not to say that honest people can't use paypal for donations, sometimes that's the only option. But if you're going to donate to someone via paypal, you should at the very least be personally aware of who you're donating to and that they are an actual person.

But let's look deeper just in case. The next thing to do is look for other sketchy signs on the blog. So I scrolled through to see what they were blogging about otherwise, and there were red flags here.

Just glancing through the blog, I could see that they almost exclusively posted about Taylor Swift and the Mandalorian. They posted A LOT within the past day (this is why you should have times enabled btw) and exclusively from the same four or fives blogs.

But maybe they just post a lot. You can actually very easily see their posting habits by looking at their archive.

We're going to go to the three dots and click "view archive"

You can also just type in "[username].tumblr.com/archive" for any blog and access anyone's archive as long as they have a public account. But what's the point of doing that. Well, in the archive, we can get a very quick overview of someone's posting habits.

And here I've circled in red the first and last thing this blog has posted in the month of February 2024 (the month I'm writing this). You can see that both of those posts were posted on the same day. Meaning all of their posts in the entire month of February happened on the same day.

But what about posts outside of February 2024?

Well there are none

You can sort posts by month and year and doing so for this blog shows that they ONLY posted in February 2024 and ONLY one day in February and it happened to be the day before I got an ask in my inbox asking for donations.

These are the most obvious tells, but there are other signs you can look out for.

For instance, all of their posts are without any sort of tags. They never comment on anything and their only original post was their one asking for donations. If you click on the search function in their blog, nothing comes up

There's also the fact that the blog is clearly targeting at making the people who WOULD care about someone needing insulin sympathetic. The fact that they use BLM, identify as a black man, have pronouns in their bio all are on purpose to make people who might care feel like this is a person who deserves help. the scammer is using your empathy against you. DON'T LET THEM. Be smart and always always think before you act, even if that action is just posting. You can help people in need without feeding the vultures that want to take advantage and want to use YOU to steal from your community

But let's just be REALLY REALLY sure this is a scam.

On whim, I copied the text straight from the ask in my inbox and put into google and then added "tumblr' at the end. You'll be shocked to know there were immediate results and not from this blog

First one was a reblog from over a year ago. the exact same wording minus the cost of the insulin and the call to action at the end

I clicked on the original poster for this and the blog was cleared out!

Minus them using the exact same photograph in their header as the blog that sent me an ask today, of course.

The second instance I found was slightly different wording, but using similar enough wording that it can be assumed came from the same scammer. This came from another ask in an inbox, but the receiver rightly called them out as a scam. The post is from two months ago and the blog that asked it as been deleted outright

All of this to say, there are always scammers on tumblr, but there have been a lot recently. This one happened to not be posing as Palestinians in need, but a lot are (in that instance, Palestinian bloggers have been vetting who is and isn't real so you can always check to see if they're getting support or getting called out from actual Palestinians). They won't always use these methods and won't always been this obvious, so even if you don't donate to someone yourself ALWAYS be thorough in your checking before you reblog a donation post. Make sure the charity its collecting for is REAL and if its a person asking for money, make sure that person is real as well.

You can help people without getting scammed or giving scammers access to your followers, and not reblogging every donation post doesn't make you a bad person or mean you don't care. Its important to be careful, and not being careful can do more harm than good. it makes actual people in need look sketchy and takes away resources that could have been given to them. So if you aren't sure if something is real DO NOT REBLOG IT

This is a scam btw, they have no way to use gofundme. This is not a real vetted donation post, but at this point I feel like I'm pissing in the wind trying to let people know that any of these ask scam bots are scanning the notes for names so they can spam more inboxes with fake donation campaigns. There are real people in Gaza who need real help but this thread IS a scam. The original asker is a bot. I've recorded hundreds of similar ones in my ask inbox. The text is AI generated, and made to make people feel bad enough to post or go to the bots blog to reblog whatever post they say to. I have a note on my blog that says don't send me asks for donations because I'll report them as a bot and it has not even slightly slowed down how many I get. They SPAM my inbox relentlessly all day. I'm begging you people to pay attention to clear and obvious fakes.

I know people probably think I'm a monster and a horrible asshole to point this out but I'm, like others, am getting so sick of this.

(Linked post above copied text below) if i see another gofundme using pictures of dead syrians to steal money from both living and dead palestinians i am going to like actually kill all of you i don't understand how to say this in a way that gets through people's heads: GOFUNDME DOES NOT FUNCTION IN GAZA. Gofundmes on behalf of Gazans can be run, certainly, but there is a rule in the gfm terms of service that the fundraiser has to state multiple times who is running said gfm on BEHALF OF the person in the country with no gfm access and none of these campaigns ever say that. They all say in the text that they're a person currently in Gaza who needs an astronomical sum right now and then at the bottom it says "This GFM is run by [name] from Winter Park, Florida" or from a shitty little town in east Germany or from someplace in Serbia. Unless a gofundme is upfront in saying "I am in Maryland right now and I am running this campaign on behalf of my cousins in Rafah and I am going to transfer any withdrawn monies to them via WorldRemit," it is a scam. "but they linked an instagram/twitter" and then the instagram is either filled with AI art or hasn't been used in months meaning they either bought it or the person linking to it isn't connected to it, is just using a dead account for clicks. you can buy instagram and facebook accounts for $20, that is not a large investment to make when these scam campaigns are bringing in tens of thousands of dollars that is besides the fact that all of these posts are formatted in the exact same way and use the exact same syntax and that, again, many of them use pictures of dead Syrians. I have found at least three pictures from BBC articles on the Syrian Civil War in gofundmes that are claimed to be pictures of the gfm runner's children Please for the love of god instead donate to places that are vetted charities that can actually operate in Gaza. This is part of why I have been practically yelling from the rooftops that all those asks in our inboxes are 100% scams. They are bots, and often use ai text to fill out the text body. Worse? They scan the notes of other posts talking about any disasters but primarily the war in Gaza. I know this is true now beyond all doubt because so much as interacting with one of those posts regardless of context (Such as letting people know it is a scam in the notes) will garner dozens and dozens of these asks in a period of anywhere from SECONDS (Literally!) to minutes, they come in droves! I had over 18 in two hours last week following 1 single reblog of a real vetted post.

I've also been saving screenshots of every single one of those asks, and they cycle through avatars and names. Sometimes you catch them early before they change their names and its just three word randomizer names that suddenly change to NAME-Family-NUMBER, in which the number signifies which generation of bot this is. I get flooded with so many I've seen them go from -Family-(no number) to 7, with the same front name and avatar.

I have archived probably over a hundred of them by now and it is really interesting how many of the names of fake people are the same. I don't know how common some of these names are in Gaza or the region in general, but it feels to me that they pick the most common name someone might reasonably believe.

They will trick you. They will say they are vetted, even vetted by legitimate sources and have ID's you could check, and sometimes they appear there, but that's because they copied those entries and are false, or else, managed to trick the vetting process.

The first thing I did when I started getting flooded by these Ask Scams is add a line to my blog header message that I block and report all asks for donations, and to not send them. Didn't even cause a pause in how many I got every day! Not one message acknowledged the note at all like a real person might. Flag, report, and block these asks without fear friends, they are not real, you are not turning away real people, only liars and scummy bots run by the worst shitstains around, who would steal using the face of the dead and suffering.

Please stop ✋🚨 you're the only hope to save a child🥺

I am autistic, physically disabled, queer, and unemployed due to Covid19, after working for 10 months of this year as an expendable worker with no hazard pay, exposing myself to literally, I am not exaggerating, I counted, hundreds of maskless people everyday.

I finally had to quit because the stress was driving me insane, after my boss told me, in no uncertain terms, that because I was an employee, I had no basic human rights, and as long as I continue to volunteer to work there, I had no right to complain about the people they were allowing into the store without masks. I was told that because I was an employee, I was expendable in every sense of the word, and it was my own fault for choosing to work there. So I quit.

If you need more reason to donate, in the spring of 2021, I'm going to be giving away tons of free native wildflowers, including milkweed, to help the monarch butterflies which are going extinct, along with any food plants like tomatoes pumpkins peppers, onions anything that I can grow that I can give to other people.

I'm also going to be giving away seeds for wild flowers and food plants, and instructions on how to grow them, instructions on how to save the seeds people get from what they do grow, and then throughout the summer and fall I'll be giving away the food that I've managed to grow, with instructions and recipes on how to prepare and eat and store them.

These will all be given away for free, to anyone in my area (because I don't know how to mail things), and it's something I plan on doing every year from now on. I'm going to put out a tip jar if people want to tip, but mostly I will be requesting, since I don't have a car, that they tip in potting soil or plant pots or things like that to help get more plants growing to give away. I'm also going to put a sign out front that says if you managed to grab something but you don't want to see it's kind of please bring the seeds to me, whether or not you cleaned them yet, so that I can use them to grow more plants or so that I can give them to other people.

Our landlord is an asshole, and the internet bill was part of our rent agreement, but he decided to be a jackass and that's no longer thing, so we don't have internet, all we have is the data for my cell phones. I was attempting to get unemployment, but I am absolutely horrible at typing on my phone's keyboard, which is why this posted being made with speech-to-text, and I there's pretty much no way I'll be able to get it if I have to type out all of that information on this ridiculous little keyboard. I applied for it back in October and I haven't gotten it and I haven't received anything in the mail so I don't even know what I'm fucking doing wrong but. yeah.

The pinned post on my blog has a link to my GoFundMe, but Cash Out is the preferred donation method because GoFundMe takes a few weeks to actually deposit the donations in my account, and cashapp has an option where it will only take like, 2 days.

I'm making a new post because the GoFundMe was also set up for November's rent, so it currently has $540 in donations, and I think people are getting confused, thinking I have more than I need, but the first 500 was for last month's rent. The only donations I have received for this month is the $40.

With the way things are going I'm probably also going to need help in January, I don't even freaking know how I'm supposed to find another job if I have to apply on my phone, I don't even know what fucking jobs I can actually work, I don't know what jobs are literally worth risking my life for, because I was born with chronic lung disease so if I get covid-19 I will probably fucking die.

I have ehlers-danlos syndrome or whoever the fuck you spell it, which means that my joints dislocate ridiculously easily, which means I can't stand for very long without fucking up either my feet or my legs or my back or something. I don't have health insurance, and I don't have a car, I was riding my bicycle 6 miles to fucking work every day with a leg completely just fucked up. I have twice now dislocated a rib because I was sweeping the goddamn floor.

I have no idea when I will be able to find a job let alone a job I'm willing to risk my fucking life for what this fucking pandemic, let alone a job that is not going to destroy my body even more than it already has been. I don't know why I'm apparently not eligible for freaking unemployment, or why I never got anything in the mail, but I am just sick of it. I hate this fucking country.

I’m Seth. I’m a trans, autistic, queer, disabled guy. and I need your help, badly. I’m incapable of working, and waiting on disability to pull through. I’ve tried a few times in the past, and gotten denied, and this time I’m appealing with the help of a lawyer. I’m living in a situation that is extremely unhealthy for me under the best of circumstances, and the rise of the recent pandemic has made it...worse.

my current household consists of my ex, who is verbally and emotionally abusive, and his mother, who is much the same. she’s on a fixed income, and he had work up until the outbreak, and now has no hours and no income. normally we barely skid by, with some help, but now...well, we’re starving. which is bad enough, but I ALSO have gotten to the point where I need to move. ASAP. if I stay here, I will not survive another year.

the good news is that I have a friend willing to take me in as a roommate! their name is Kat, and they live in Florida! Kat is an awesome friend, and has been nothing but supportive, helpful, and amazing as long as I’ve known them. Kat has work, and has expressed an interest in being my live-in caretaker. the only problem with any of this is that I currently live in Oregon, which is no small trip.

we’re currently hoping to stash away enough for a plane ticket this way, a uhaul, gas, food, motel/hotel stays along the way, and then first and last month’s rent and a security deposit to go towards someplace that isn’t their parents’ house. I’ve overestimated what we’ll need, mostly because of fees from gofundme and taxes and all of that sort of thing, plus a little extra to put towards emergencies, but 100% of what I get from the gofundme is going to go towards moving. I’m not going to touch that, breathe in it’s general direction, for anything else. I don’t care how long it takes.

gofundme scams have been a problem for well over a decade now. Here's a recent one from the US that got prosecuted. gofundme does not have enough staff to vet fundraisers on their site, and they admit this.

No, I have not. How would this relate to the process of sending a tumblr ask, which requires going to someone's blog, clicking on the ask button, writing an ask, and clicking send?

In my experience, real horny guys tend not to send sugar daddy asks to completely faceless, completely sfw underage bloggers on here. I am not sure what him allegedly being arab has to do with it.

The methods of verification are being questioned because they are in action here verifying someone who looks a whole lot like a pornbot. If you have to keep them secret to be reliable, this is a very bad sign - first, it means that if a scammer fails verification once, they may succeed on subsequent accounts, and second, it burns public trust of the methods.

I find the idea that this account was hacked to also be pretty questionable - it did not stop sending asks for its gofundme at any point when these three asks were sent, and it has been reblogging porn posts sporadically for the entirety of its existence. Archive link for the curious.

I agree, I think the bloggers here with long histories on this site are legitimate and many gofundmes are real. I also think there are scams, some of which are making it past verification, and this is important for people to know before they send money to someone who could be a scammer.

yes, there is a possibility not all of these campaigns will be legit. this is a risk everyone donating and everyone participating has accepted, because like you said—this is work being done by volunteers whose people are going through a genocide. saying "you are not qualified to do this work" and recommending the fucking UN is some callous bullshit, because they are being forced to do this work due to the genocide. they have been extremely transparent about their goals, their limitations, and their efforts.

This is self-contradictory. Earlier in this post, you excoriated Jeff for questioning the reliability of verification methods and presenting the possibility of some fundraisers being scams, and here you are saying that some gofundmes are scams and verification has limitations.

I do want to say that I agree with this paragraph, and I appreciate you being up front about this. If this paragraph was how everyone on tumblr thought of vetting and verification, I would have no issues with it.

This is a well-known Palestinian user and vetter explaining that they are completely confident that the pornbotlike ask sent by an account with a verified fundraiser was a result of "embarrassing behavior/a mistake in online interactions."

These asks are all identical, to the letter - that's how I found them. This is, needless to say, very strange for any person to do on tumblr, least of all someone who is raising money to try and protect their family from a genocide. glitzyboo, for example, does not post images of themselves or reblog anything remotely close to NSFW, so it's very very odd behavior for someone to tell them they are "pretty enough" for anything. It is even more suspicious when you consider the very long history of porn bots sending sugar daddy scam asks on this site.

I don't know what is going wrong here - who is mistaken about what, what part of the process is breaking down, but the story told in the above post, that this was an embarrassing social faux pas that happened one time and was sent by a real person who was horny, does not hold up to scrutiny.

@piakichu​ I wanted to respond to your response in a fresh post because we started to move away from the topic the op brought up.  (For anyone who wishes to read that it is here. It’s just too much to simply summarize.)

Thats definitely true as well. I myself had a big advantage because growing up I always had access to my parent’s healthcare which is pretty good especially when compared to the way other companies treat mental health. And on top of that, I live in NJ so forced conversion therapy was never really a fear for me even with the worse therapists I encountered.

Right now the practice I go to is awesome in lots of different ways. When I started paying for my own bills they were supper helpful and even gave me some pro bono sessions when I had lost my job last year. It’s also one of the more diverse practices I’ve been to, not only with their general staff but with the therapists themselves. And it is absolutely an outlier in the category of mental health care. If I did an exact headcount, the majority of the staff would still probably be white because even if this place was perfect* the overall system is fucked in a way that ends with the majority of its members being white. And when I say majority I mean almost 90%, and each year this trend continues  with the new members entering the work force.

So even if the therapist themselves is queer, a white queer person still will never have experiences the same as say a black queer person. And that makes it much harder for the therapy to give that person any benefits at all. The therapist in this example still has all the experiences and biases that come with white privilege making it hard for them to truly understand or sympathize with their client. The client will likely have a difficult time discussing most issues (even if a level of trust is eventually established) because it will always require another level of explanation than it would if their therapist was also black.

And honestly, even and explanation is not good enough. Its likely impossible for a person of color to get the same benefits of therapy that a white person does as long as PoC don’t have the option to pick a doctor who is a PoC as well.

I as a white person will never understand the fear that a black person has to experience while just existing. A few words cannot undo the imbalance of societal power, and no level of imagining will make me able to understand the effects that has on one’s mental health. So how could I possibly give a client the treatment they deserve if I can’t relate to them in that way? 

It’s not the same as a therapist treating an abuse victim when they themselves haven’t been abused. If you aren't white in this country your life is fundamentally different than the one the white therapist has had. And this isn’t something that can be taught either, because we’ve already tried that. Cultural sensitivity and general awareness are part of the schooling to become a mental health practitioner, it just doesn't make enough of a difference to be an acceptable solution. Its been shown that white counselors are less likely to actually use these practices than ethnic minority counselors, even when their personal client base is at least 20% made up of PoC.  

So what is really needed for improvement is (as with most things in the us right  now) is a redesign of the whole system, to allow PoC the same opportunities as white people in the mental healthcare field. And to do that we (white people) have to do our part to be better. Which brings me to the current BLM movement. 

I wanted to post this on my mental health blog because white people, even ones who are part of other marginalized groups, have the privilege of getting to being unaware of these kinds of things. And if they are made aware, they have the privilege of forgetting about it, which its not something a PoC gets to do. So, for my followers who are white, please do not forget about this. We can’t allow privilege to blind us to the shit happening around us. Protests have been making a huge difference, we have to keep the movement and the story going even as the news finds other topics to focus on. If you can’t protest, donate. If you can’t donate, share resources and be vocal about your support of our siblings of color. Listen to the voices of color around you. 

I know people with mental health issues have a lot of our own personal struggles, but they do not prevent us from helping. There is always something we can do. If you get overwhelmed easily, start small. Pick one thing to focus on, one charity and donate what you can or share it with those around you who can. Or pick a gofundme for a trans PoC or other lgbtq* person trying to reach a donation goal for surgery or safe housing etc.

In addition to this, check on your black friends. Remind you love them and will fight to keep them safe. Call out other white people who use being part of a marginalized community as an excuse not to care or try to help. Black lives must always matter.

So! Last year I was not able to qualify for proper insurance due to having a shit job and living in a place where anything I could have got would have killed me with overcharged premiums. Due to that, I recently qualified for Virginia Medicaid and took a trip to the local dentist. I found out that I have several cavities and an infection that require deep dental work if I want them to go away.

The problem is medicaid does not cover more than 35 dollars out of 525 dollars worth of work. I’m currently doing Pixel art commissions, but paypal isn’t a sustainable way of saving money and the most this will do is help me save enough for when I move later this summer.

Because of that, I have set up a GOFUNDME in order to hopefully get the money I need through donation.

I��ve never made a gofundme before and I also don’t have a very high opinion of myself, so I don’t see how I could ask for this money without offering something in return.

A lot of people in the Kamen Rider fandom have responded positively to This post. So I’ve decided that if this gofundme makes it past at least $100, I will write a full article based on this post.

a note about women’s month 💘

thank you to everyone who voted in the fave female panelists poll this year! last year was a blast and this year was even better! we’ve seen more woman on tv this year — and some improved, though grossly insufficient, diversity within that — and i love celebrating that with you everyday!

last year, i wrote this:

the lack of diversity in british comedy is an alarming issue that has only recently become headline news. statistics presented by this study, based on 50 years of panel shows and over 4,700 individual episodes, are beyond disappointing for women (here is an easy-to-read graph by series & by year); similar disappointment stems from the lineups at popular comedy festivals, like edinburgh. in 2014, the head of tv at the bbc promised to end all-male comedy shows, a “step in the right direction” that hasn’t been without fear of tokenism, fair criticism as well as some naysayers. women, people of colour, lgbt peoples, those differently-abled and those all of the above and in between are just as funny as cis-identifying white men and deserve a place on our screens. watch their standup, buy their books, stream their videos, listen to their podcasts, comment on and like their content, follow their social media. this support can directly help women become more visible in british comedy.

➡ here is a list of some radio programmes currently on the air. while it does look stacked with men (because it is), women do feature on so many of these series and absolutely smash it! did you know sandi toksvig hosted the news quiz for almost ten years, and its regular panelists include susan calman, rebecca front, zoe lyons, and more? or that victoria coren mitchell has hosted heresy since 2006 (because there’s nothing she can’t do)? or that sarah millican, jo brand, and sally phillips have each hosted series of the museum of curiosity? these are all on the masterpost! 👏 p.s. you can always search for and/or request more radio shows at /r/panelshow or, if they’re not panel radio shows, /r/notapanelshow :)

➡ social 👏 media 👏 determines 👏 relevancy 👏 do i agree with this system? no. is this the system entertainers are currently slaves to? yes. do you follow your favourite women on twitter, instagram, youtube, etc? one click. one like. one retweet. one reblog. here is a list of some of the comedians i follow on twitter to get you started — all of your faves are on there! when you like something they are on, tweet about it! tag them, the network, the channel, use the hashtags, post pictures! tell channels like dave or people like richard osman who your faves are, who deserves more exposure, who you want to see in the future! we’re already obsessing over how much we like these ladies anyways, so why not make that obsession even more visibile?

➡ we have a really sweet, modest community here of at least 10,000 people. this is not something i’ve ever talked about because i don’t want what i’m going to say to be misconstrued as begging for notes — that is not my concern. but you may have heard people on this site talk about something called the like/reblog ratio. a lot of creators are concerned that, apart from tumblr’s ever-evolving ludicrous algorithms murdering their visibility, people are so obsessed with their blog aesthetics that they’re not actually reblogging everything they like. here’s a couple of my gifset details, one from a nicher post and one from a more popular post:

while i appreciate any notes, numbers likes these aren’t always encouraging. i’m not here to tell you how to enjoy your spare time and interests, or to criticise people who enjoy aesthetic. i just want to point out that if you want someone to be successful, you play a direct part in promoting them and spreading their art. as the years pass, this becomes more and more true. i know how much you all love these ladies — i get messages about them every single day — but it’s a simple fact that a gifset of james acaster or noel fielding or richard ayoade or david mitchell is going to get more notes than a post about any of the women who placed in the top 5 of this poll. i am not bringing this up to this make anyone feel guilty about what they enjoy; i only hope my mentioning this encourages you to be conscientious when participating on social media, especially when your interest lies in the products of a grossly unjust industry that is taking a lot fucking time to get itself on the right track. more followers on a comedian’s twitter = more work for that comedian, because that’s simply the direction the film & tv industry is going. if your follow yields that much power, why not use it for good?
