North Carolina prepares for more as 'historic' rainfall causes widespread damage across the state
A powerful storm system unleashed "historic rainfall" across parts of North Carolina, flooding highways and leaving drivers stranded, with flash-flood watches persisting Tuesday in the state's southeastern region.
Although the storm was not organized enough to receive an official name, it dissipated by Tuesday, still delivering heavy rainfall to southeastern Virginia and prompting flash-flood watches there as well.
Weather Forecast For 32226 - Jacksonville FL

In southeastern North Carolina, the low-pressure system dumped once-in-1,000-year rainfall levels. Carolina Beach, a coastal town about 10 miles south of Wilmington, received over 18 inches of rain within 12 hours, according to the National Weather Service. Nearby towns saw over 12 inches during the same period, causing widespread road closures. Wind gusts reaching up to 77 mph also hit the coastline, according to Weather.com.
Carolina Beach and Oak Island, located about 30 miles south of Wilmington, declared states of emergency following Monday's severe flooding. The deluge caused road closures, damaged buildings, and left some residents stranded on highways. The National Weather Service warned on X that parts of Carolina Beach were submerged in at least 3 feet of water, sharing an image of a van nearly underwater.
Carolina Beach Mayor Lynn Barbee reported that the town's fire department rescued 57 people and 12 animals between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday. During the same period, police used a 5-ton truck to rescue 12 additional people, he shared on Facebook.
Some roads in North Carolina may remain closed for the "foreseeable future." The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office reported on Facebook that officials transported children home from Carolina Beach schools using high-water vehicles after buses were unable to navigate flooded roads.
The North Carolina Transportation Department indicated that several roads in the southeastern region will be shut down for an extended period. Drivers are advised to avoid the roads as crews work on emergency repairs, including multiple damaged bridges.
Some people were stranded for hours on Highway 17 outside Wilmington, while others sought refuge at an Exxon gas station along the route, according to the Wilmington Star News, part of the USA TODAY Network.
In Brunswick County, which borders Wilmington to the west, deputies and public safety personnel worked to deliver food, water, and supplies to drivers trapped by flooded roads and highways, as stated in a news release. Public schools, offices, parks, and libraries in the county will remain closed on Tuesday. An overnight curfew has been established for residents and visitors in unincorporated areas, effective until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Southport, a city of about 4,000 on the county's eastern coastline, reported approximately 23 inches of rain over 48 hours. During a live report from the area, AccuWeather meteorologist Aaron Jayjack witnessed a bridge collapse behind him, causing a vehicle and its driver to plunge into the water. Fortunately, bystanders rescued the man, who suffered only minor injuries, Jayjack reported during the broadcast.
Church Provides Aid to Flood Victims
Lifepoint Church in Wilmington is stepping up to assist those affected by the floods. The church has mobilized hundreds of volunteers across its four local locations to distribute essential supplies and assist uninsured residents with cleanup efforts, according to executive pastor Kevin Lloyd.
"We have several individuals who are completely displaced," Lloyd shared. "We're working closely with them to find housing."
This isn’t Lifepoint Church’s first experience with recovery efforts after a natural disaster; they actively supported the community following Hurricane Florence in 2018. The church is also collaborating with local and national organizations, such as Convoy of Hope, and is encouraging online donations that will be directed entirely toward recovery efforts.
youtube
Lloyd noted that the floods affected beach areas quickly and severely, while in other communities, "the damage from flooding didn't begin until late yesterday evening, primarily due to erosion."
In certain locations, water levels remain chest-deep, and people are relying on boats or large trucks to get around.
Until the waters recede, assessing the full extent of the damage will be challenging. "People are doing their best to salvage what they can from their homes," he explained.
Flood Warnings Issued for Florida Beaches; Northern Plains Bracing for Thunderstorms
Parts of Florida are under flood warnings, particularly along the northeastern coastline, which will remain in effect until early Wednesday morning. Beaches in the area are experiencing dangerous rip currents and rough surf of up to 6 feet, according to the Florida Times-Union, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Forecasters predict that the storm system will continue moving northward through North Carolina and into the Mid-Atlantic, causing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall until it is expected to dissipate on Wednesday.

In the West, a "strong low pressure" system will emerge on Tuesday, advancing across the central Plains and into the Rockies. This will bring a risk of severe thunderstorms, gusty winds, and showers, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
In the northern High Plains, where the risk of thunderstorms is highest, the storm could produce isolated large hail. Northeastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas, and western Nebraska may experience wind gusts exceeding 70 mph.

C. L. Peck Contractor (Photo taken by me on May 11, 2022)
C. L. Peck Contractor was started by Clair L. Peck Sr. in 1915 or 1918 in Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Michigan City, Indiana on May 5, 1881, the son of a lumberman. He went to Purdue University and, while there, competed in track and basketball at the same time as finishing his four-year engineering degree in three years. The firm "became known for erecting office buildings, classical church structures, warehouses and corporate headquarters" (LA Times). The Los Angeles Business Journal said the firm "specialized in creating fireproof buildings." "He was considered an expert in reinforced concrete almost from the beginning of its use in construction and was noted for his craftsmanship" (NY Times). His full name is Clair Leverett Peck. He was born in 1881 and died in 1971. He was married to Viola Curtis Peck. The LA Times described him as "the contractor who literally built much of Southern California, from the Capitol Records Building to the Bonaventure Hotel... to the Crystal Cathedral and the Orange County Performing Arts Center." The company constructed more than 1,200 buildings in Los Angeles, including 40 buildings along Wilshire Boulevard. Some other buildings include: the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, "the Forum in Inglewood, high-rises in Century City and most of the chapels and other buildings at the Forest Lawn parks." According to The New York Times, "Saks Fifth Avenue had Mr. Peck build its first Los Angeles area store, in Beverly Hills, with no written contract." He died April 23, 1971 at the age of 89 at Good Samaritan Hospital and is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.
Tumblr media
Peck was the Peck of Leonardt & Peck! I think my Leonardt post might be the longest ever, but this one is pretty close! His bookkeeper was named Meda Green and she lived on Hartford Avenue (Westlake). Weirdly in the same 1927 city directory, Peck is president of C L inc at 354 S Spring (Downtown) and vice president of another General Contractors firm of unclear name (with A S Bent as president, whom I've written about before) at 257 S Spring room 430. Finally, in the same directory, Beverly Hills Realty Board is in the "C L Peck bldg" in Beverly Hills (???!).
He had two sons, who both worked in his company: Edwin and Clair Leverett Peck, Jnr., who was born on November 18, 1920. Jnr went to Los Angeles High School. He was married to Emily Lutz and then Margo Ryan (according to a contributor to Find A Grave, he had another wife named Linda Hussey and three step-children through her). He had three children from his first marriage to Emily Lutz of Brentwood (assuming the Los Angeles neighborhood): Clair L. "Peter" Peck III, Nancy Peck Birdwell, and Suzanne Peck. He also had a sister named Sally Peck Carson and seven grandchildren. He had an engineering degree from Stanford and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II before joining his father's company in 1945. He expanded the business's work "erecting major department stores for Nieman Marcus, Robinsons-May, Broadway and Bullock's, the Sherman Oaks Galleria, Fashion Island in Newport Beach and much of the original South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. He worked with some luminary architects as "John Portman on the Bonaventure Hotel, Philip Johnson on the Crystal Cathedral, Charles Luckman on the Forum, I.M. Pei on the Creative Artists Agency in Beverly Hills, and Bill Pereira on the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Building in Newport Beach."
Tumblr media
The Byron Jackson plant in Santa Ana, CA was designed by John Kewell & Associates and constructed by C. L. Peck (see source below).
Tumblr media
In this photo, Melba Rardin and L. A. Claypool survey the excavation for an addition to St. Joseph Hospital in Burbank, CA in 1961. C. L. Peck was the contractor for the creation of "a new six-story-and-basement wing for the hospital" for $5.5M USD which was planned to add 256 patient beds and other facilities. Claypool was the "clerk of works" for Peck.
Tumblr media
In 1976, Peck was "elected to the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and, as chairman of its building committee, oversaw construction of the bank's new building at 101 Market St." The firm also built the Hibernia Bank building in San Francisco. He also served on the boards of the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, Investment Company of America, Farmers Insurance, Northrop Corporation, Los Angeles Children's Hospital, and Metropolitan YMCA. Additionally, he had been president of San Francisco's Bohemian Club, Los Angeles's California Club, and the Los Angeles Country Club. "In 1985 he was the recipient of the Y.M.C.A. Dr. Martin Luther King Human Dignity Award."
As of 1981, C. L. Peck Construction Inc. was located at 626 Wilshire Blvd., Ste. 925 in downtown Los Angeles, CA. They had a General Building Contractor license from the California Contractors State License Board from February 27, 1981 through February 28, 1997. Weirdly they were exempt from Workers Compensation Insurance? Victor Herbert Siegel was the Responsible Managing Officer, John Lee Willis was CEO/President until September 26, 1983, Paul John Matt was the Responsible Managing Employee from May 7, 1991 until July 15, 1991, Allen Marvin Katz was RMO/CEO/President until only November 16, 1983, Louis M Stafford was RMO/CEO/President from then until April 7, 1987, and William Alan Worthington was "Officer" until February 15, 1983.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1986, C. L. Peck Contractor (the 53rd-largest construction company in the USA in 1986 and one of five largest contractors in California by the time of his death) and Jones Bros. Construction Corp. agreed to merge. By then they had "dominated the heavy construction business in Southern California for more than half a century." Apparently the reasoning behind their merger was the increased competition from overseas and out-of-state companies. The plan was to become Peck/Jones and have their headquarters on Wilshire Blvd. in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. C. L. Peck, Jr. would be the chairman, with Jerve M. Jones the chief executive. According to the Los Angeles Times, "the Peck and Jones families will continue to be the sole stockholders of the merged concern, which is estimated to have annual revenue of about $400 million and a work force of about 500."
He died on December 14, 1998 at 78 years old at the UCLA Medical Center from a massive stroke. He is burried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA.
According to Open Corporates, C. L. Peck Construction Inc.'s registered address was 122 S. Westgate Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90049 and there was a filing in 1999 of a Certificate of Dissolution. In January of 2021, Suzanne Peck was added as CEO and then, in July of 2022, there was a change of status from Dissolved to Terminated.
In 2005, Peck/Jones had "been forced into bankruptcy proceedings by its creditors" in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles "by one of its clients and two subcontractors who claim they are owed nearly $400,000." In another bankruptcy filing at the "U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, Redlands Community Hospital and other companies said they were also owed significant amounts of money.
It's unclear if Jones Construction Management is the current name of that firm or if the Jones Brothers' descendant, Eric Jones, is just using their legacy for the company he founded in 2008. According to him, the Jones Brothers acquired C. L. Peck Contractors rather than it being a merger (www.jonescm.com).

Why I Love Florida’s Nature Coast
Tumblr media
I look ahead and there is a curving blacktop taking me through stands of pine, oak, and sugar maple trees with occasional citrus trees popping up here and there. I feel safe and nurtured by the natural surroundings. In the winter, the sugar maples turn colors like orange and red. Some of the bushes turn yellow. It is our version of the northern fall colors and it is beautiful. I keep an eye open for traveling deer, tortoises, squirrels, and other fauna that may want to cross the roads I travel, both to keep from hitting them and to appreciate their graceful presence. I am on my way to a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, where I will meet and eat with fellow small business owners, politicians, committed nonprofit directors, resort directors, and other community leaders. We will chat about families, upcoming events, business, responsibilities, and opportunities, then we will unanimously stand and pledge our allegiance to our country and say a prayer for God’s wisdom, guidance, and blessings. I may be given 5 minutes to pitch my business to attendees. I always feel unity and hope when I attend these luncheons. Some have resulted in new business. Some have resulted in new friends, and some have resulted in new responsibilities, but they all remind me of how fortunate I am to live in a place that still promotes solid values and community partnerships. Florida's Nature Coast Florida’s Nature Coast ranges from Pasco County north to Wachulla County along the Big Bend coast. It is an informally designated area originally proposed by Florida’s Governor Lawton Chiles. NatureCoaster only covers Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus Counties because that is the area we know best. Read about the history of the Nature Coast here. This 1,000+ square miles of Florida’s Gulf Coast has a history that is echoed from small town to small town. The east side of the Suncoast Parkway is still heavily forested as part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. This is a true gem of natural preservation that helps to shape the character of the eastern portion of the area. There are several ranches, farms, and large cow/calf operations, including the Bellamy Brothers Ranch, the Barthle Brothers Ranch, Campton Ranch, and Fenco Farms. The cows moved to high ground for the storm and made it through just fine with a roll or two of hay. Image by Diane Bedard The west side of each county has been developed to enjoy water-based recreation such as fishing and boating and swimming with manatees. This coast does not feature traditional beaches but instead boasts ecologically-friendly saltwater marshes and tidal grasses along its shores. In fact, we have the Nature Coast Aquatic Preserve and the north end of the Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserve protecting our natural shorelines. Protected Springs and Rivers are Part of the Magic The hydrology is amazing! First-magnitude freshwater springs abound throughout Florida’s Nature Coast, with Weeki Wachee Springs probably being the most famous thanks to Newt Perry and his original Weeki Wachee Park. Today Weeki Wachee Springs is a State Park, protecting the headwaters of the Weeki Wachee River. Next is Homosassa Springs, with its 1960s attraction and resort having been converted into a State Park, protecting the headwaters of the Homosassa River. The torpedo-shaped manatee glides through the waters at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, one of the places you can find manatees year-round on the NautreCoast. Photo by Sally White Old Homosassa is a fishing village that is still a working waterfront, with fishermen and shrimpers plying its waters to make a living. There are also resorts and charters for vacationers and visitors, as well as the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins, which is what remains of a huge plantation that was located in Homosassa, but was burned out by the union armies. Read about it here. Tampa Bay Pushes Northward, but Can't Overrun Our Small-Town Culture As Tampa Bay pushes northward into this region, many ranches have been converted to subdivisions and planned communities, but the small-town culture remains in the cities that populate the region, including Zephyrhills, Dade City, Brooksville, Inverness, and Crystal River. Some are feeling the transition more, like New Port Richey with its historic downtown, riverfront, and small business culture inching toward a more urban feel with its public recreation center and city services. Port Richey is a city just north of New Port Richey. Its lack of a downtown area is replaced by an active waterfront district. There are many census-designated places like Aripeka, Hernando Beach, Spring Hill, Bayport, Hudson, Homosassa, Land O’Lakes, Beverly Hills, Ridge Manor, Elfers, Lecanto, Holiday, and Floral City. While Spring Hill and Land O'Lakes have become popular residential areas, they have no downtown or city services. Lecanto is growing like wildfire with residential and commercial growth. It is in central Citrus County and the county’s government services are located there. Wesley Chapel is another census-designated area that is booming! Starting with Saddlebrook Resort, a nationally recognized golf and tennis resort, Wesley Chapel began its growth in the 1980s and has become a powerhouse in the east Pasco region. To drive State Road 54 from I-75 to Zephyrhills is an exercise in growth through residential development. Still, when you get to Zephyrhills, the pace slows down and the small businesses abound. You never know where you will find the roaming manatee at the Florida Manatee Festival in Crystal River. Image courtesy of Citrus County Chamber of Commerce. Did I mention the Festivals? This area has so many fun festivals! The Manatee Festival, the Kumquat Festival, BBQ & Blues, the Stone Crab Festival, the Seafood and Arts Festival, Art in the Park, Camping with the Blues, Blues Bash at the Ranch, Brooksville Blueberry Festival, Holistic Health Festival, Multicultural Festival, Chasco Fiesta, and... I cannot name them all! AND PARADES! Keep up with it all on our Events Page. I am so grateful that natural areas have been preserved throughout the Nature Coast region. And I am grateful for the people that make up this area, including you. Below you will find lists of parks and preserves that help keep our nature coast natural. Whenever you have the opportunity to just pull into one of them and take a short break, I encourage you to do so. Discover the Hidden Gems: Your Ultimate Guide to a Memorable Stay at a Motel in Anaheim
When it comes to planning a trip to Anaheim, California, most people immediately think of the world-renowned Disneyland Resort. While Disneyland is undoubtedly a magical destination, there is so much more to Anaheim than meets the eye. Nestled in the heart of Orange County, Anaheim is a city filled with hidden gems, and one of the best ways to uncover them is by staying at a motel. In this ultimate guide, we will take you on a journey through Anaheim's hidden treasures, ensuring a memorable stay at a motel.
Location
Choosing the right motel is essential to make the most of your Anaheim experience. Look for a motel conveniently located near major attractions, such as Disneyland, Anaheim Convention Center, and Angel Stadium. This way, you'll save time on commuting and have more time to explore the city.
Comfortable Accommodations
While motels are often associated with budget-friendly options, it doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Many motels in Anaheim offer clean and comfortable rooms equipped with all the essential amenities. Look for motels that provide cozy beds, spacious bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary breakfast options. Some motels even have swimming pools and fitness centers, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Local Dining Delights
One of the joys of staying at a motel is the opportunity to discover local dining delights. Anaheim boasts a diverse culinary scene, with a variety of restaurants that cater to all tastes. Start your day with a hearty breakfast at a nearby diner, where you can savor classic American dishes and indulge in fluffy pancakes or crispy bacon. For lunch, head to the popular Anaheim Packing District, a food hall brimming with unique eateries serving everything from gourmet burgers to artisanal ice cream. In the evening, explore the city's vibrant neighborhoods and try out Mexican, Vietnamese, or Korean cuisine at local family-owned restaurants. Remember, the best culinary experiences often lie hidden in unexpected places!
Outdoor Adventures
Anaheim's pleasant year-round climate makes it ideal for outdoor activities. Discover the city's hidden natural gems by exploring its parks and trails. Pack a picnic and spend a leisurely afternoon at Yorba Regional Park, where you can enjoy picturesque lakeside views and indulge in outdoor recreational activities such as biking or fishing. For a more adventurous experience, venture to Santiago Oaks Regional Park, nestled in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. This hidden gem offers scenic hiking trails that lead you through lush landscapes and offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding region. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply seeking some fresh air, Anaheim's outdoor wonders will not disappoint.
Arts and Culture
Anaheim is not just a destination for theme park enthusiasts; it also boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene. Take a stroll through Downtown Anaheim, where you'll find a variety of art galleries, boutique shops, and theaters. The Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center is a must-visit, hosting rotating exhibits that showcase diverse art forms, history, and culture. For a taste of live entertainment, check out the schedule at the City National Grove of Anaheim, a renowned venue that hosts concerts, comedy shows, and theatrical performances throughout the year. Immerse yourself in Anaheim's creative spirit and discover the hidden treasures of its artistic landscape.
Exploring Beyond the Parks
While Disneyland is undeniably a major draw, don't limit your Anaheim adventure to just the theme parks. Use your motel as a base to explore the surrounding area. Visit Knott's Berry Farm, a beloved amusement park with thrilling rides and shows for all ages. Take a short drive to Newport Beach, where you can relax on the sandy shores, indulge in fresh seafood, and soak up the coastal atmosphere. If you're a sports fan, catch a baseball game at Angel Stadium and cheer for the home team alongside passionate fans. By venturing beyond the parks, you'll uncover the hidden gems that make Anaheim a truly remarkable destination.
Creating Lasting Memories
At the end of the day, the true value of a stay at a motel in Anaheim lies in the memories you create. Take the time to connect with the locals, strike up conversations, and listen to their stories. Engage in the local culture, embrace the diversity, and be open to new experiences. Whether it's discovering a hidden culinary gem, stumbling upon a charming boutique, or simply enjoying the sunshine at a local park, Anaheim has plenty to offer beyond its popular attractions. So, go ahead, book your stay at a motel in Anaheim, and embark on an unforgettable journey to uncover the city's hidden treasures.
In conclusion, Anaheim is a city filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. By choosing the right motel, indulging in local dining delights, exploring outdoor adventures, immersing yourself in the arts and culture, and venturing beyond the theme parks, you'll unlock the true essence of Anaheim.
