The Chinese government announced Tuesday it is opening an investigation into Google in response to 10 percent tariffs imposed on Chinese imports by US president Donald Trump. Minutes after the tariffs went into effect, Chinaâs State Administration for Market Regulation said it was probing the American tech giant for potentially violating the countryâs anti-monopoly law.
The Chinese government may have strategically chosen to go after Google because it has limited operations in the country, ensuring the hit to the US tech giant would be relatively minimal. The move gives China plenty of room to escalate if the Trump administration announces further tariffs or other trade measures. Google declined to comment.
China also announced it was putting more restrictions on the sale of some critical minerals like tungsten and slapping additional tariffs on farm equipment, pickup trucks, liquified natural gas, coal, and other goods from the US. While the US isnât reliant on China for all of the impacted minerals, the country does control the majority of the worldâs tungsten supply, which is used in light bulbs, semiconductors, and ammunition.
âChinaâs position is firm and consistent. Trade and tariff wars have no winners,â Chinaâs Ministry of Foreign affairs said in a statement Sunday shortly after the tariffs were announced. âThis move cannot solve the USâs problems at home and, more importantly, does not benefit either side, still less the world.â
China has kept Google in its crosshairs during the ongoing trade war with the US over the last few years. In 2020, the government reportedly considered opening an antitrust investigation into Google's Android business, according to Reuters. The deliberations followed a complaint from Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, which was targeted by Trump during his first term.
Because of US sanctions, Huawei is unable to use American-made software like Google Mobile Services, a suite of tools widely used across the smartphone industry. The restrictions forced the company to develop its own operating system called Harmony OS.
But most smartphones around the world still run on Android, which has sparked competition investigations in a number of countries, some of which have led to concessionary changes designed to give consumers and app developers more choices and lower fees. In China, several smartphone makers continue to rely on an open source version of Android.
This past December, Chinese authorities also opened an anti-monopoly investigation into Nvidia, the chipmaker whose GPUs play a crucial role in the development of generative AI and have become a significant source of trade sparring between the US and China. The announcement came soon after the Biden administration further tightened Chinaâs access to high-end semiconductors.
About 15 years ago, Google stopped offering a search experience tailored for China following a series of Chinese government-linked cyberattacks against it and other US companies. Google debated reentering China with a search engine about seven years ago, but the project was scuttled following protests from some employees concerned about supporting Chinese surveillance and censorship.
Google has also stopped short of directly selling cloud technologies in China, as local laws could threaten the privacy and security assurances it offers to customers in other markets. Other Google services such as YouTube are blocked by Chinese internet regulators.
China has allowed domestic companies to buy advertisements through Google so that they can market to customers abroad. But the revenue from those deals is relatively small, and China didn't even garner a mention in parent company Alphabet's annual financial report last year. That stands in contrast to Meta, which lists China among its biggest markets in terms of advertiser location and said last year that China-based advertisers account for 10 percent of its annual revenue.

Update: Patience Fans Winning Again (Import Poll Decisions Too!)
So I've got a version working with all the features for a solid beta, but... only on my computer.
It should work when I set it up with all the cloud nonsense it needs, but it costs money, I don't wanna spend money right now, and I can't really make you pay for a product I'm not sure will work right.
So here's the deal: I'm starting a paid internship soon, so once I have that income I'll be willing to spend money on this. Problem: it's a National Parks internship so I won't have internet or the computer that I make LyingBard with until I get back... in 3-6 months.
But! I also want to ask you an important question...
I've been making LyingBard as a Cloud-Based app. It allows you to use it from anywhere through my website, but it also means I incur the cost of finding GPUs to run this with while you have a perfectly good GPU sitting in your computer doing nothing (also cloud apps are a pain in the ass).
I could also make it a Desktop App, but it would be about 1GB (blame PyTorch), it would only run on NVIDIA GPUs, and you'd have to set up your own discord bots and stuff (although I can try and streamline that for you).
Another big problem is money. Cloud-Based stuff costs money to run and becomes basically a job even if it doesn't pay enough. I'm considering a career in the National Parks Service so I won't be available most of the time if something goes wrong and stuff can go VERY wrong with a paid cloud app (think leaked passwords, compromised payment processor (Stripe) account, that sort of thing).
A Desktop App, however, can be left alone without spontaneously deleting itself or attacking you, but I would certainly have to focus on a career unless you donated a whole heck of a lot.
So DECIDE TIME! After carefully (or carelessly, idc) considering these options. WHICH DO YOU CHOOSE?!
Unfortunately, LyingBard isn't releasing until I get back regardless. Even the desktop app is just a bit too much work for me to get done before I leave.
#fubai#lyingbard#ai tts#ai#lyrebird ai#rtvs#please vote in the poll this is important ok?#also reply with your thoughts I want to hear it even if you don't think you fully understand#also ask questions too

For dependable and repeatable deployments, you can use pre-configured and validated templates to build up a Hypercompute Cluster with just one API call. This include containerized software with orchestration (e.g., GKE, Slurm), framework and reference implementations (e.g., JAX, PyTorch, MaxText), and well-known open models like Gemma2 and Llama3. As part of the AI Hypercomputer architecture, each pre-configured template is available and has been verified for effectiveness and performance, allowing you to concentrate on business innovation.
A3 Ultra VMs will be the first Hypercompute Cluster to be made available next month.
An early look at the NVIDIA GB200 NVL72
Google Cloud is also awaiting the developments made possible by NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 GPUs, and weâll be providing more information about this fascinating improvement soon. Here is a preview of the racks Google constructing in the meantime to deliver the NVIDIA Blackwell platformâs performance advantages to Google Cloudâs cutting-edge, environmentally friendly data centers in the early months of next year.
Redefining CPU efficiency and performance with Google Axion Processors
CPUs are a cost-effective solution for a variety of general-purpose workloads, and they are frequently utilized in combination with AI workloads to produce complicated applications, even if TPUs and GPUs are superior at specialized jobs. Google Axion Processors, its first specially made Arm-based CPUs for the data center, at Google Cloud Next â24. Customers using Google Cloud may now benefit from C4A virtual machines, the first Axion-based VM series, which offer up to 10% better price-performance compared to the newest Arm-based instances offered by other top cloud providers.
Additionally, compared to comparable current-generation x86-based instances, C4A offers up to 60% more energy efficiency and up to 65% better price performance for general-purpose workloads such as media processing, AI inferencing applications, web and app servers, containerized microservices, open-source databases, in-memory caches, and data analytics engines.
Titanium and Jupiter Network: Making AI possible at the speed of light
Titanium, the offload technology system that supports Googleâs infrastructure, has been improved to accommodate workloads related to artificial intelligence. Titanium provides greater compute and memory resources for your applications by lowering the hostâs processing overhead through a combination of on-host and off-host offloads. Furthermore, although Titaniumâs fundamental features can be applied to AI infrastructure, the accelerator-to-accelerator performance needs of AI workloads are distinct.
Google has released a new Titanium ML network adapter to address these demands, which incorporates and expands upon NVIDIA ConnectX-7 NICs to provide further support for virtualization, traffic encryption, and VPCs. The system offers best-in-class security and infrastructure management along with non-blocking 3.2 Tbps of GPU-to-GPU traffic across RoCE when combined with its data centerâs 4-way rail-aligned network.
Googleâs Jupiter optical circuit switching network fabric and its updated data center network significantly expand Titaniumâs capabilities. With native 400 Gb/s link rates and a total bisection bandwidth of 13.1 Pb/s (a practical bandwidth metric that reflects how one half of the network can connect to the other), Jupiter could handle a video conversation for every person on Earth at the same time. In order to meet the increasing demands of AI computation, this enormous scale is essential.
Hyperdisk ML is widely accessible
For computing resources to continue to be effectively utilized, system-level performance maximized, and economical, high-performance storage is essential. Google launched its AI-powered block storage solution, Hyperdisk ML, in April 2024. Now widely accessible, it adds dedicated storage for AI and HPC workloads to the networking and computing advancements.
Hyperdisk ML efficiently speeds up data load times. It drives up to 11.9x faster model load time for inference workloads and up to 4.3x quicker training time for training workloads.
With 1.2 TB/s of aggregate throughput per volume, you may attach 2500 instances to the same volume. This is more than 100 times more than what big block storage competitors are giving.
Reduced accelerator idle time and increased cost efficiency are the results of shorter data load times.
Multi-zone volumes are now automatically created for your data by GKE. In addition to quicker model loading with Hyperdisk ML, this enables you to run across zones for more computing flexibility (such as lowering Spot preemption).
Developing AIâs future
Google Cloud enables companies and researchers to push the limits of AI innovation with these developments in AI infrastructure. It anticipates that this strong foundation will give rise to revolutionary new AI applications.

Happy December everyone! As this year is coming to a close I just want to share a few pieces of fan art/memes that I didn't have a chance to upload this or last year.

The first one is a meme I made back in August of 2022 when I was still a Mr. Men's fan (I've largely lost interest in the show sometime between late 2022 to early 2023). Here, I took a screen shot from the TV Tropes article I Call Him "Mister Happy", used a png of The Mr Men Show's incarnation of Mr. Happy, and edited the two images together on Krita. This was made when the "Name Soundalikes" meme, which I used the basis of this image, was still popular.

The second was my attempt at one of those crossover memes where characters from separate IPs react in horror/sadness at the news, complete with one of the characters saying their iconic line/catchphrase in a different tone to correspond with the event. For a little bit of context: Stadia, Google's cloud gaming service, was scheduled to shut down on January 18 of this year, and I made this only one day before the service's end of support.
The characters used in this pic are (clockwise from top to bottom) the stick figure from xkcd, GoAnimate Caillou, Karate Jone from Rhythm Heaven, Dan from Dan Vs. (who is ironically the only one in-character, angrily shouting "GOOGLE!"), RED(-chan) from the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, Wesley from Wandering Wenda, and Phred from Phred on Your Head Show and The URL with Phred Show (the last two I doubt people would know). I also used the late Gilbert Gottfried on the pic (which I admit wasn't the best idea).
Oh, and about the image used at the bottom right: that was "Friendship ended with [blanc]" template with Google (displayed there as Chrome since I couldn't find the Google logo) agreeing with Nvidia to use their own CG service Geforce Now. Here's a better quality version of the image.

And for my last batch of unpublished arts, these are sketchs I made for the characters in my upcoming project "NoitaVision" (still a working title) I made back when it was known as Rebineru, which I realized was a crappy title. Since these are concept arts I drew early on this year, the designs used in this pic may look different from their finalized designs once I publish them. The descriptions of the characters will be indicated in the alt text.
And there you go, a college of unpublished arts! I hope by next year I'll make more drawings and publish them online!

April 2023
It looks like everything is set up correctly and youâre ready to start using it.â Aber statt 12 Minuten und 45 Sekunden sind zwei Wochen vergangen, mein anfĂ€nglicher Enthusiasmus ist aufgebraucht und mein Interesse an Deep Learning erlahmt.
Ich sehe mir "Practical Deep Learning for Coders 2022â an.
âSTOP: No internet. Click â>|â in top right and set âInternetâ switch to on.â

MediaTek and NVIDIA Team up for Automotive AI
With more and more auto manufacturers pushing for smarter vehicles, there's been a considerably growing demand for more powerful smart automotive platforms, going beyond the simple act of pairing your smartphone with your car's Bluetooth console (think 'K.I.T.T.' from Knight Rider). It's no surprise then that we've seen an uptick of specially-designed hardware and software solutions that provide entertainment and navigation features for drivers and passengers alike. With that being said, MediaTek's push towards putting more AI tech into everyday consumer products has certainly yielded some very interesting results, and the company's newly-announced collaboration with PC gaming giant NVIDIA aims to do the same, at least in terms of automotive applications. More specifically, the mobile chip manufacturer formally announced that it has entered into a partnership with NVIDIA to develop new AI-powered software for vehicles, with the goal of creating a "smart cabin" for drivers and passengers. This collaboration will enable MediaTek to develop automotive SoCs, which will in turn integrate a new NVIDIA GPU "chiplet" with support for NVIDIA AI and graphics IP. Interestingly, these chiplets will be connected by specially-developed interconnect technology, at least according to MediaTek. Rick Tsai, Vice Chairman and CEO of MediaTek states: âNVIDIA is a world-renowned pioneer and industry leader in AI and computing. With this partnership, our collaborative vision is to provide a global one-stop shop for the automotive industry, designing thenext generation of intelligent, always-connected vehicles. Through this special collaboration with NVIDIA, we will together be able to offer a truly unique platform for the compute intensive, software-defined vehicle of the future.â NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says this combination of MediaTek and NVIDIA hardware will "enable new user experiences, enhanced safety and new connected services for all vehicle segments, from luxury to mainstream.â MediaTek adds that its smart cabin solutions will run NVIDIA DRIVE OS, DRIVE IX, CUDA and TensorRT software technologies. This then allows consumers to experience a full range of AI cabin and cockpit functionality with integrated AI, safety, and security features as well. While NVIDIA is more known to consumers as a PC and gaming-centric brand, the company does put a considerable amount of investment towards the development and production of AI and IoT (internet of things) technology, in addition to its powerful GPUs and processors. The Taiwanese company further states that by allowing MediaTek to tap into NVIDIAâs core expertise in AI, cloud, graphics technology, software and pairing with NVIDIA ADAS solutions, we can expect to see further improvement to the capabilities of the Dimensity Auto platform, MediaTek's flagship automotive software product. Dimensity Auto is designed for vehicles with support for compatible smart features. With all that being said, it should be interesting to see how both companies approach this new partnership, both on hardware and business fronts. Read the full article
