Decided that I will be liveblogging my experience with listening to the Magnus Archives. I have a general sense of who charachters are and some of the major spoilerish plot points due to going through the tags on Tumblr recently as well as reading some fics, but I'm pretty in the dark as far as the specifics go.
But yeah I listened to the first seven episodes last night! Thoughts as I was listening are under the cut.
Ep 1 - Angler Fish
Jonathon Sims, new head archivist for the Magnus institute(supernatural research place). Employed by Elias bouchard, head of the institute, to replace Gertrude Robinson, recently dead. Jon has worked here as a researcher for 4 years now. Jon is a skeptic. If an investigation has gone as far as possible without conclusion or new leads, it is transferred to the archives. Institute founded in 1818. Archive is terribly organized. 86-91G/H. Very few investigations actually seem to be stored down here, only the original statements. Three research assistants. One named Martin who he finds useless. Other two are Tim and Sasha. Some of the statements cannot be recorded digitally, can only be recorded with a tape recorder. Additional information about the followups is being provided by his assistants. Nathan Watts. Case #0122204. Old fishmarket close, Edinburgh. April 21st, 2012. Institute is in London. Fear of strangers. 6 disappearences Jessica Mcuin November 2005, Sarah Baldwin August 2006, Daniel Rawlins December 2006, Ashley Dobson and Megan Shure May and June 2008, John Fellows March 2010.
Ep 2 - Do not Open
Case #9982211. Joshua Gellespie. November 22nd, 1998. Bournemouth, that's where Jon was born. Fear of strangers. Fear/desire for the truth. Fear of death/being buried alive looks to be the main one. Most clever horror movies protagonist ever. Breacon and hope delivery company. Operated until 2009. Based on Nottingham far north of Bournemouth. Gellespie was the only person to live in that building for the two years he had the coffin. Nobody ever moved in after either. 2 years alone.
Ep 3- Across the Street
Case #0070107. Amy Patel. July 1st 2007. Disappearence of aquaitence Graham Forger. Voyeuristic tendencies from her. The spiral/madness? She watched him ceaselessy. Which hmmm. April 7th. Not Graham. Now being watched in return. Watching seems to be a central theme.
Ep 4- Page Turner
Case#0132806. Dominic Swain. June 28, 2013. Nottingham. Ex alte arua. From higher, from out of the heights. The vast. Jorgun Leitner. Mountains, cliffs. Fear of the sky. Vertigo. Key of Solomon. McGregor Matthew and jorun Leitner. Bought by GRbookworm. Gertrude Robinson? Jorgun leitner reclusive book collector. Had the book made possibly? Pinhole books, Mary keys. Ozone. Mary keys clean shaven with lots of tattooed words, listens to death metal. Her Jared? Painting of an eye. Grant is the sight that we may not know. Grant is the scent that we may not catch. Grant is the sound that we may not call. Jared made the painting. Bones fell out of the shadows of the other book. The dark for her bookshop? Lichtenburg figure in the starry vertigo sky. Childhood friend was struck by lightning because of him. Micheal Crew. Survived. Leather coat, dyed black hair. Jared Key. Had to be bought in order to give it away. Mary keys was murdered in 2008. Overdose of painkillers, extensive post motrum body mutilation. The flesh? Looked the same as the person he met. Her skin was hung up to dry. But with hair and tattoos. Jared charged with his mother's murder, but acquitted. Jared burned the book. 1994 incident related to leitner's library. Current project. His library is a problem. Mary's drying skin had been written on in permanent marker. The tattoos! The same language as the bone book. Jon will try to persuade Elias to make searching for the rest of leitner's books a top priority. They've done enough harm.
Ep 5- Thrown Away
Case #0092302. Kieran Woodward. 93 Lancaster Road Walthamstowe. February 23rd, 2009. Hundred of dollheads. David Attire, Matthew Wilkinson, Alan Parfett. The doll house. Next bag, a single super long piece of paper with the Lords prayer written over and over again in Latin. Ritual. Next bag absolutely filled with teeth. Residents had no idea. Alan found someone. Maybe the person leaving the bags. New bag. Packing peanuts. Metal heart of Alan inside. Saresh and Altman were the police who investigated. The teeth were all the same tooth. Needing to know the truth. Not entirely sure what this one is. Corruption or rot possibly?
Ep 6- Squirm
Case #0140912. Timothy Hodge. The dogstar pub/club. Skinny, student, long henna red hair, tron tights, too much eyeliner. Writhe. Her name is Harriet Lee. Arm scratching. Only water. Art student. Panic, difficulty with adjusting to student life. Recently mugged? Archway, Elfthorn row. Woman with long red dress on ground, which squirmed. Long matted black hair. Felt like she was stabbed. Being followed by her. Dragged down by a weight, skin itching plus vomited near the police station. They had sex, but after. Something squirmed inside her skin. She split open. Writhing worms everywhere. He burned down the flat afterwards. Description of red dress woman matches Jane Prentiss, which is concerning. Hodge was probably wormed during sex. Most definitely corruption.
Ep 7- the Piper
Case #9220611. Staff Sargeant Clarence Berry. Wilfred Owen. War. Poems. The trenchs. Wanting to fully describe the war but unable to. But don't worry. You will. Whistling tune. The whistle of artillery. Reborn in the remnants of his own gore. He met the war. The Piper. Avatar of the war? He said that he was left alive to do the wars work. Joseph rainers tags were found next to him. All who here the Piper never make it back. Hamlin was nearby. Are we the stolen children or the rats driven into the river. His poems now had the essence of the war. The ferocity within him...the war is almost over, and he is sad for it. He died when peace was signed. 1922.
Thoroughly enjoying this so far! But will definitely have to space out listening to it due to the spookiness levels.

Morelos Ch F: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard [5] def. Nicolas Mejia 7-5, 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Since several moments in this match, both players tried to maintain their moments through their aggression. However, Gio nailed more pressing moments in the eleventh game from the way he constructed his points, outhitting N. Mejia toward the end of the match. As a result, Gio managed to convert 33% of his 6 break points, which he created through his winners, while N. Mejia only had a break point through Gio's double-fault, but N. Mejia was unable to capitalize on it on his return due to an unforced error.
On the other hand, it appeared that both players had different strengths on serve. Overwhelmingly firing 18 aces (out of the cumulative 118 aces he fired in this tournament alone) than N. Mejia's 6, Gio had an exceptional first serve winning percentage at 86%, which helped him to handle some troubles. Interestingly, N. Mejia also stood out in the second serves with a 66% winning percentage than Gio's 50%, where his second serve errors were likely discreet. Somehow, N. Mejia won 66% more points from his second serve, trying to put Balance's error midway.
This title marked Gio's second Challenger title of the year after the Nottingham Challenger (indoor hard) earlier this year, as well as his second Challenger title in Mexico after winning his maiden Challenger title in Leon last year. As a result, Gio went back to 162 live by the conclusion of the tournament, and he will face Omar Jasika in the first round of the Acapulco Challenger. On the other hand, also partaking in Acapulco, N. Mejia will face Maxime Janvier, where the Colombian also received a Special Exempt for his stellar performance this week.

Matchday! United travel to north London to face Arsenal, with Erik ten Hag's side going in search of our first away victory of the season.
Home wins against Wolves and Nottingham Forest have sandwiched our loss at Tottenham Hotspur, with the Reds approaching the first international break of the 2023-24 season.
But before that, United must go toe-to-toe with Mikel Arteta's Gunners once more, having faced Arsenal during our pre-season tour of the United States.
Ten Hag's team emerged victorious, winning 2-0, but the Premier League proves to be a different level.
United have beaten Arsenal 99 times in all competitions over the years, from 238 matches between the clubs. The Gunners, on the other hand, have won 86 of our meetings. Should United come away with a win today, we will rack up a century of victories against Arsenal - becoming the first-ever side to do so.
I wouldn't expect anything from this game, considering our away record. But... who knows?

Wow!!! 2-0 down after 4 minutes, but come back to win 3-2!! Sounds like something out of the Ferguson years. The problem is, it’s anything but. Nottingham are a team who will be facing a relegation battle. The thought of that scoreline after 4 minutes at Old Trafford is simply extraordinary. Yes, we fought back, but had to rely on an extremely dodgy penalty to win it. In my view Rashford dived and the outcome should not have been a penalty for us but a booking for him. We don’t live in a perfect world though - last week we were denied a supposedly certain penalty against Toatenham - what goes around comes around.
My football correspondent was at the match, and in his review he gives a very diplomatic opinion of not only the penalty, but also those two quickfire opening goals:
hi - after the defeat at spurs i expected united to make a few changes - they did but most were enforced by injury - garnacho was on the bench after proving that he is best employed as an impact sub
united forced an early corner - it was headed out and further knocked away and suddenly forest striker awoniyi was clear of the last defender (Rashford ?) and bearing down on goal - keeper onana seemed frozen in indecision and eventually lay down in his 6 yard box as awoniyi scored past his left hand
2 minutes later forest had a free kick on united's left - it was swung in and took a minor deflection onto boly's head and bounced into goal - united 2 down after 4 minutes - wow - the only consolation was that united had 86 minutes to do something about it
on 17 minutes rashford, playing in his favoured spot wide on the left, got round the defence and played the ball across to eriksen who guided the ball past turners left hand - forest might have had a 3rd but awoniyi inadvertently blocked his mates shot - from a corner casemiro had a free header at the far post 4 yards out but it went wide - half time 1 - 2
on 52 minutes united had a free kick in a similar spot to forests 2nd goal - in a training ground routine fernandes hit it square to rashford who crossed into the box for fernandes to run onto and head across to casemiro who this time proved deadly from 2 yards - united went all out for the winner and on 67 minutes casemiro put fernandes through on goal - a desperate worrall pulled fernandes down just outside the area - the ref waved his red card and forest were down to 10 men - 9 minutes later rashford was adjudged to be fouled in the area - i use 'adjudged' deliberately as it wasn't a clear cut incident - fernandes stepped up and fired low to the keepers right and the comeback was complete
united never gave the impression of being completely in control of events and there were gasps of both surprise and consternation when the ref added 11 minutes stoppage time - forest were still a threat but united hung on
united looked fitter but still seem weak in midfield - it was far too easy for forest to get at united's back four - if there are no reinforcements in the last few days of the transfer window then ten hag will have to find a solution from the existing squad - he has a full week to prepare for the trip to arsenal - given united's recent poor record at the emirates (1 point from last 15) and their habit of losing away to any half decent side i'm not expecting much - but there again i wasn't expecting to be 2 down to forest in 4 minutes - so expect the unexpected
bye

Entry 2: Exploration of a negative situation of a sports venue.
At Hillsborough stadium on April 15, 1989, Liverpool football club played Nottingham Forest football club in a Football Association Cup semi-final (Nolan et al. 2021). The football game was delayed due to the amount of fans stuck outside of the stadium, as there was only one entrance (Leppings Lane) and 7 turnstiles for the Liverpool fans into the stands (Tikkanen, 2023).
Tumblr media
Diagram of the Leppings Lane entrance (BBC News, 2016).
This had caused a crowd to form, which led to the police officers at the entrance to open the exit gate to let people in whether they had a ticket or not, as there was no way on checking when letting them all through an exit gate (BBC News, 2022). This had then ended up filling the sections closest to the gate in pens 3 and 4 and then the game had started, which mean everyone pushed forward to get closer to the action, which then caused some fans to panic (Cocking & Drury, 2014), left to be crushed by the front barriers and some to be stood on (BBC News, 2016).
youtube
An explanation on what happened at Hillsborough in 1989 (BBC News, 2016).
This incident resulted in 97 people dying and more than 760 people were injured (Tikkanen, 2023), the youngest being 10 and the oldest being 67 years old (BBC News). With the loss of many and the injured total being an enormous amount, the incident had been classified as a stampede and a mass gathering. De Almeida et al. (2019) defines a mass gathering as a large group of people all in a specific area/location all for a certain reason for an amount of time, which may cause pressure on planning and resources be able to provide.
The commander on duty had been sent to court in regards to his contribution to the fans duty of care, which was then found to be breached due to the police errors being made to cause the dangerous outcome, mistakes made by the police control box to open the gates, the stadium not being stable prior to the event, errors in the safety certificate for the stadium, the delay of declaration on the major incident by the police and the emergency response in ambulance service (BBC, 2016).
This disaster had changed the way Football stadiums are being run by enforcing the Hillsborough Law, also known as the Public Authorities Bill, which aimed to use public funds to represent the families legally involved in the incident and providing the families with a public advocate to work within their public issues (BBC, 2023).

Nottingham (IH) Ch SF: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard def. Alexander Blockx 7-6(8), 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Gio improved his baseline game through more reliable backhands, where he tried to overwhelm A. Blockx as soon as the latter moved forward. The Belgian had hid chances, with a break point that also served as his set point thanks to his forehand return ace, but it was insufficient to keep him in the match as Gio kept striking through all sides of the court, which contributed to 5 of his break points despite converting just 20% of them in the second set.
It turned out that both pairs had their own strengths in terms of their service games, taking into account how the first set became a servefest. Gio overwhelmingly stood out from his first served by 20% with a 86% percentage, backed up with his 11 aces to A. Blockx's 5. On the other hand, despite Gio only double-faulting once, it faded his second serve winning percentage to 53%, 25% below A. Blockx's 76%, who won 10% more points from his (own) second serve than his first.
In his second career Challenger final appearance after his maiden Challenger title in Leon last year, Gio will face fellow Frenchmen Matteo Martineau, who just stunned Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 7-6(5) in a more competitive showing. While servefest could also be a possibility to set up the match, their groundstrokes and net game and how they balanced all these elements will also be tested tomorrow. Gio might have a little edge thanks to his previous experience, which might or might not help with the pressure in this regard.
