MTV
Funny Funny!! A collection of anime video clips
MUSIC MUSEUM
Are you tired of videos that just feature dancers or have the artist act cheesy? As promo videos become more varied, it's nice to see more videos that use animations and dolls. MTV is going crazy again tonight!
*The title says it all. The writers over at Newtype were excited about the animation displayed in the music videos on MTV in the 11/1985 issue of Newtype magazine. I really love their enthusiasm for animation and the different techniques used in the videos that were featured in the article*
John Fogarty - Vanz Kant Danz
Produced by Will Vinton Productions. The main character is a pig named "TUNES". A 3D animation style with clay pigs and break dancer dolls moving frame by frame. The dancing pigs are really cute.
Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
Produced by Steve Baron, who has worked on famous promo videos such as "Billie Jean." I was surprised at the beauty of the CG animation overlaid on the live footage from Budapest, Hungary. The color scheme is excellent, not only in the square-like animation but also in the live scenes, where only the instruments are colored. It seems that we will see more of this kind of thing in the future.
Prince - Raspberry Beret
The video director is Prince himself. It is a rather flashy video that combines live performance scenes, live action of the dancers around him, and animation. The images of people's faces and skies remind me of psychedelic illustrations from the 1960s.
a~ha - Take On Me
Warner Pioneer This was also made by Steve Barron. The animation was done by Limelight Productions in the US. The strange footage of the members' movements turning into animation seems to have been quite elaborate.
Goon Squad - Eight Arms to Hold You
The second single from Goonies (movie). It's not an animation, but an elaborate piece that moves puppets one frame at a time, like the old monster movies. The punch line of him becoming a hero is also hilarious.
Motoharu Sano - New Age
Among Japanese artists, Motoharu Sano is the one who puts the most effort into making promotional videos. This one was made by Tim Pope, and features a robotically marching doll and a scene of Sano rapping alternating. It's not particularly eccentric, but it's a memorable video.
The Alan Parsons Project - Don't Answer Me
It was produced by D.J. Webster, who recently produced Jeff Beck & Rod Stewart's "People Get Ready." The animation was produced by Broadcast Arts in Washington. It's a wave-like video that's like an American comic that's been animated, with a lot of hard-boiled touches. It shows a new direction for promotional videos.
Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Accidents Will Happen
The production is by female producer Annabel Jankel. The best anime and the painting itself is simple. But it's a radical movement with a touch of emotion to the song. Perfect for the page.
Cars - You might think
The first MTV Video Awards were held in May, this is one of F. Stein's masterpieces. The members of Cars suddenly turn into flies(?) and the skillful combination of live action and animation is eye-catching. The video is more popular than the song itself. Is this your masterpiece?
Go West - We Close Our Eyes
Godley & Creme (formerly of 10cc), a sought-after video director, made this epic film at a cost of $90,000.
-Another fun thing about MTV is the various animated jingles. There are a lot of great pieces of art that last just a few seconds.- *(Link to MTV bumpers of the 1980′s. This is what Newtype was referring to as “animated jingles” in this part of the article.)

GOGAI, GOGAI!!! COME GET UTENA KIBBLES
It's September 3rd. It's 1997. Princess Diana just died, and that's very important to lots of people. You, however, are chewing your nails to nubs waiting for the climax of Revolutionary Girl Utena's Black Rose Saga. It's going to air today.
But like any good fan, you're already one step ahead, because you've spent the last couple days thumbing through Animedia's September issue supplemental, the 100 page Duelist Bible. Strangely, it appears to be in English??? Wow! Thanks Nagumo for translating, Ayu Ohseki for Japanese editing, teasot for proofreading, and ME, FUCKIN' VANNA, for scanning and scanlating this massive booklet!

We've got duel summaries! We've got character design sheets! We've got a school directory! We've got THE DUEL RULES. We've got cast interviews! WE'VE GOT THAT CHU-CHU DOLL CRAFT GUIDE. Check it ALL out here, in the Something Eternal Bibliothèque! You can flip through it page by page here, or you'll also find on the page a link to a PDF version for your at home viewing/archiving needs!!
This gargantuan tome really gets it across that in 1997, you didn't have a fandom wiki or on demand viewing. If you didn't catch and record the episodes, a booklet like this becomes a critical tool for keeping track of everything that's happened up to now, and is also a way for the series creators to tap fans on the shoulder and draw attention to details they want seen but not explained in the show directly. For example, this drops at the close of the BRS, but points out Touga's sword isn't the same in Keiko's duel and in the opening sequence. A thing we don't see cashed in until MUCH later!
This has been a true and absurd labor of love on my part. I even rescanned the booklet from my originals because their quality (decades old lmao) was not worth scanlating. This took a ludicrous amount of time, and has been a main project of mine for over a year now!! I'm so happy to have gotten it done in time for the Something Eternal Watch-Along thread, and I really really hope everyone finds something cool and interesting about it! The really cool thing is this now completes the set of magazine supplementals by the big three magazines made for Utena during its run. We now have fully scanlated this, as well as Animage's June Utena Dossier, and Newtype's November Utena? (Oh My!) UTENA! Take a stroll through memory lane, be they yours or someone else's!
As always, if you like this kind of content, consider supporting us on Patreon! Especially right now, a holy grail acquisition is in the works that I will bleed to share with y'all. More on that later, lmao.
Revolutionize the World! Love, Vanna

Look what I dug up!

I used to be obsessed with Newtype USA, though I rarely bought the magazines because of the cost. At $9.95, they would be a steal nowadays.
This issue had Fooly Cooly postcards! The coolest character designs but I could never make it through the OVAs—a little too manic for me. :/

The cover story: .Hack stuff! Another series I never finished (.hack//Sign—I don't think I've watched or played anything else). The OP, art design, and whole "trapped-in-a-game" story (before SAO) were cool, though!

L: I'm pretty good with recognizing anime but this one is not in my memory bank at all. Anyone watch this series? Was it good?
R: Oh boy, look at all the dead companies here: Central Park Media, Suncoast, Fry's, and—my prediction—Best Buy eventually, too. That Ebert quote got a TON of play back in the day, too. I'm pretty sure I used it in more than one article.

More FLCL. Any fans out there?

And yet ANOTHER show I never finished. The colors and designs in Witch Hunter Robin were A+, but I got bored and dropped the series around maybe episode 15...

If y'all like these, I'll post some more photos another time. I only made it about 10% of the way through this Newtype USA issue!

Readers new and seasoned. THANK YOU all for rocking with OT/NT for all of these years now. I started OT/NT in 2012 and it's still going strong. We have reached 100,000 reblogs and have over 9,600 readers. You all have stuck out with me here for all of these year even though I have been absent. And that I am TRULY sorry for.
The continued activity here have made me realize that I have made a mistake and should have continued to scan and blog. So, OT/NT will be coming back. Not only is it coming back but I will be expanding on the content. Here on tumblr, the focus will still be on scans but I will cross post content from YouTube. YouTube/video content will be mix of anime and anime adjacent/Japanese physical media related topics that will be in various forms (books, magazines, VHS, etc.).
I hope you all still continue to read and support my efforts to bring you all the cool anime physical media content from the past. This time around, we're back like it's 2012.

December 1997 saw Revolutionary Girl Utena come to its finale, and the anime magazines of the era were hyped to hype it! Newtype gave it the December cover and first pages, with multiple spreads of new art and analysis!
As I always do, I also scanned other Utena-relevant pages! The voice actress Christmas party has some familiar faces, including Tomoko Kawakami, Yuka Imai, and Kotono Mitsuishi! The episode guide and ratings list, as I've done for Newtype's entire 1997 run, are also here. My strange devotion to scanning the adverts and merchandise pages continues, as does the steady stream of VINTAGE FANARTS!
If you're wondering about the NEW MUSICAL DROPPING AT THE END OF 1997, there's an announcement here, also!! (We mean this one!)
Finally, Utena and her new cover art feature in the month's extra bonus Christmas labels!
If you like absolute loads of Utena magazine scans, the Bibliothèque is the place for you! And if you want to join our happy little FORUM, Something Eternal, you can come watch the final three episodes of Revolutionary Girl Utena with us in our weekly watch thread!!!
