randomly saw some neon rainbowfish in my local pet store and decided to buy them so the stowaway brothers can finally have a school

i dont have a place to quarantine them so im just gonna put them together in the grow out tank and hope for the best. its gonna be pretty small for this many fish but theyre almost big enough to go in the big one anyway

poor fuckers are so much paler than mine despite being the same size. and they tried to sell me their cheap dry food "so they can get more colorful" LMAOOO

You know how in Finding Nemo there's that one fish that's obsessed with bubbles? That's what one of my new neon rainbowfish is like. Every time I look at the tank, she's just pecking the bubbler over and over.

iwaizumi: whale shark? originally i was leaning towards maybe something green but a whale shark tail would be sick. and would really suit him imo. i like the idea of like... him having some of the spots on his face too so they kinda look like freckles almost?

Best tankmates for peacock gudgeons? They seem really neat but I can't find a lot of concrete info about them as a community fish.

Sorry for delays in responding! I'm just bad at things.

You're not wrong - these are uncommon fish so concrete info can be hard to find. Let's review the basics though... Peacock Gudgeons are sleeper gobies that get up to about 3 inches long, prefer middling water qualities (pH 6.5-7.5) and lower tropical temps (72-77F). They aren't really aggressive, I'd just avoid pairing with fish they can eat whole. I was reminded of that recently with a 3 inch Knight Goby I placed with younger tetras... welp.

With this in mind, I would recommend them with similar size peaceful tankmates: Cory cats, platies, more robust tetras (lemons, hatchets, penguins, maybe larger Pristellas - not neons or cardinals), dwarf rainbowfish, kuhli loaches. Maybe larger blue-eyes. Avoid dwarf cichlids and the snappier anabantoids.

update on the new babies!!

theyre doing pretty well, they eat well, and look healthy. theyre keep flaring their fins and flexing on each other even tho theyre still tiny babies lol

a few of them are smaller and more pale than the others, and im kinda worried for them cuz they seem to stay on their own and dont join the school. but they seem pretty active so hopefully itll be ok

Condom Fleaman is the biggest one and keeps chasing the rest around. hopefully when i move them to a bigger tank they wont fight so much

i was kinda scared mr Luckypie would get outcompeted and wont get enough food cuz of his birth defect, but he seems to be doing well in the group

also i covered the entire surface in duckweed so they dont jump out cuz theyre way more active in a school, so now its really dark and hard to take pictures :/

My new dwarf neon rainbows have come out. Unfortunately, it looks like I only got the one female, and it was the one in the ricefish bag. Something tells me they were only picking out the males because they couldn't tell the difference between the female rainbows and the Daisy's blue rice fish. A little annoying tbh. Dunno why they would put those two fish in the same tank. I might have to try and get more females later from a different source.

I guess I had a lot to say about freshwater. I own fish at home, and although my passion is the sea, being a marine biologist isn’t exactly the most lucrative career. I also have a ton of other hobbies, so I made fish-keeping easier on myself by keeping freshwater fish...but by no means is keeping a fish tank of any kind inexpensive or easy. Freshwater is simply less-expensive than saltwater. Let’s talk the aquarium hobby in detail!

All of the fish in the Aquarium Tank are fish bred and sold for ornamental purposes or other purposes that aren’t for human consumption. They all have wild counterparts that would belong in one of the other freshwater habitats we covered, but the models the ACNH devs created are based mostly on domestic versions than those wild counterparts, especially when we’re talking any of the goldfish and the betta. The others in the tank are just really small and they’d get lost in the tank they should be in - the Neon Tetra really should be in the Tropical River Tank, for example.

People have kept fish since ancient times. Archeological evidence finds fish-keeping started as early as the Sumerian empire, 2500 BC. When we went over the Goldfish a year ago, we talked about how the Chinese first started selectively breeding goldfish for new patterns, colors, and body types to create the hundreds of variants we see today (kinda like what we did to wolves to get dogs). It wasn’t until the 1800′s, though, that hobbyists would learn to cycle their tanks in order to keep fish alive longer.

Ya see, in the wild, freshwater systems are ecosystems; shocking, I know. There are many different parts to the machine that operate in order to keep it going - from natural filtration through sediment and new rainfall, to plants and animals exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide, as well as nitrates and other natural chemicals. Temperature, structure, and pH are also factors that play a role in keeping fish happy and alive. And because we learned water is such a great solvent and it flows really easily, it can be tough for an inexperienced hobbyist to recreate all that in a tank. (Trust me, it’s taken me many years to get it all down to a science, despite the fact that I’m a fish expert - it’s really hard! It’s not called a hobby for nothing!)

In order to have a healthy tank, it’s recommended to quite literally start your tank like a natural pond would. That means to fill it with water and all the decor you want, and then let it sit with your filter running to allow the good bacteria in the water to grow. These bacteria are super important because they help keep the water clean. Fish tank bacteria help with the nitrogen cycle within your tank, taking the ammonia your fish will be excreting (and which is incredibly toxic for them) and transforming it into less-dangerous compounds -> nitrite and then into nitrate. Live plants you put in your tank (and you should put a bunch!) then absorb the nitrate to grow, releasing oxygen into the water for the fish to breathe. Then the cycle starts all over again as the fish excrete ammonia and poop. This is your tank’s nitrogen cycle! The larger the tank you have, the better this cycle functions. However, there are many pitfalls here that many excited hobbyists will fall into.

One sure-fire way of screwing up your nitrogen cycle is adding in more fish than your tiny ecosystem can support. This is called “overstocking” the tank, and it will mess up your water chemistry. Some fish, like goldfish, are notoriously dirty fish, as they excrete more ammonia than other fish would and can be destructive to aquarium plants. Overfeeding the fish will also mess with your water chemistry by introducing organic matter that may rot at the bottom or within your gravel, inviting disease or an algae bloom. When the water quality goes down, so too does the quality of life for your fish. They will become stressed as their environment becomes toxic and become more susceptible to disease. 

This is why, even with the healthiest tank, you, the owner, MUST DO WATER CHANGES. Yes, it’s the most annoying, least-fun part of owning a fish tank. Water changes simulate the flow and flushing of the water that occurs in nature when it rains, when water flows through a river, or drains into the soil. Since none of that in feasible in a fish tank, YOU must be the power than physically removes some of the water and replaces it with clean water. But! DO NOT CHANGE 100% OF THE WATER. As we said above, your tank has natural bacteria that help its nitrogen cycle along. If you kill them all, either with a full water change or you use soap (don’t use fucking soap in a fish tank!!!), you’ll end up with “new tank syndrome” which is essentially back to square one. Your fish will die (unless they are insanely hardy, like goldfish). Having a filtration system helps to reduce the need for frequent water changes, but, no matter what, they need to be done to maintain a beautiful tank. 

^This is my 125 gal freshwater tank. That big plant in the back is my pride and joy, as is my five-year old Scissortail right above it, Mr. Squigglybutt. I’d like to point out that our tap water that we use to fill the tank during water changes has high levels of nitrate, so we had to get a special filter. Make sure to test your tap water, as some municipalities have impurities that can hurt your aquarium, like chlorine. There are plenty of ways to neutralize those chemicals, and testing your water will help you to identify how your water should be conditioned!
