There are four types of fish scales!

Cycloid scales are thin, overlap, and flexible. They're found on primitive teleosts (like minnows and carp).

Ctenoid scales have small, backwards pointed scales (known as cterns) make the fish more hydrodynamic and faster. They're found on Advanced Ctenoids (like perch and sunfish).

Ganoid scales are thick, diamond-shaped, and mostly non-overlapping. They're found on Chondrostei (like sturgeons and paddlefish).

Placoid scales are spikey and tooth-like with nerves. These are found on Chondrichthyes (like sharks and rays).

Earlier this year I learned how to use the perspective tool in Lazy Nezumi Pro, an add on for Photoshop. I was so excited I immediately got to work designing fantasy bathrooms. This is the first in a series of four! I am extremely nervous sharing it. I’m torn between loving it immensely and thinking I should never do environment art ever again LOL 🥹😂

The unexpected bonus of binge watching aquarium review videos for the past month and half while I’ve been in the hospital and the skilled nursing facility is that it retrained my facebook algorithm to exclusively give me fish and aquatic plant content. Also, I got an answer from our local fish and game warden and they said I can legally keep north american sunfish species. I just need to submit an application for a transport permit (which is free!) once I pick a vendor, and let them know how the waste water will be disposed. Trying to decide between keeping a giant tank of pumpkinseeds, or longeared sunfish. They both super pretty but the pumpkinseeds get bigger and live a little longer.

Also not sure if I should make a separate blog for fish stuff. Like will it become a full blown hobby? Or is my AuDHDs desperately trying to get some dopamine hits while I’m still stuck in the hospital? My eyesight is being crappy again which makes writing and art stuff hard to do in the moment.

I have always wanted to swim with sunfish! The idea of being in the water alongside these gentle giants fascinates me.

Their unique shape and peaceful nature make them captivating. I can only imagine how incredible it would be to glide through the ocean and observe them in their natural habitat.
