The famous Peterborough Lift Lock (Lock 21) is a National Historic Site that sits along the Trent-Severn waterway. It uses hydraulics to lift and lower boats a distance of 65ft/20m! It was terrific to see and experience in person, especially surrounded by the beautiful fall colours that were in peak season at the time. . Have you been here before? . 🌲 Point of Interest 🌲🔭 Telecoping across a smoky English Bay-Burrard Inlet to Point Atkinson in West Vancouver, 6.5 km (4 mi) away. The Point Atkinson Lighthouse catches the first rays of sunlight as a boat exits the inlet on it's way out to the Salish Sea. . Perched on a granite rock and surrounded by 65 acres of virgin forest, the Point Atkinson Lighthouse lets seafarers know they're on their way out to sea. This concrete lighthouse was built in 1912 and declared a National Historic of Canada in 1974. Previously, a wooden lighthouse stood there with an attached keeper's quarters. It was built in 1874. . In the distance and outlined by smoke from the BC/Washington State wildfires, Bowen Island, Gambier Island and a mountain range just north of Port Mellon. . Today in #history: #OTD, April 1, 1942, the first Japanese arrived Manzanar War Relocation Center in #California after being forced from their homes under Executive Order 9066. The residential area at the Manzanar War Relocation Center was about one square mile and held a population of 10,000. In an effort to make the desert landscape feel more welcoming, the incarcerees built gardens and water features, which are still present in various states of restoration today. After the site closed in 1945, the buildings were either moved, sold for scrap, or demolished. Replicas of two barracks, a mess hall, and a women's latrine have been built at the site on their original foundations. An informative museum is located in the original auditorium building and the cemetery at the rear of the property help put the site into context. Today the site is preserved and interpreted as part of the @NationalParkService as @manzanarnps. #ca #cahistory #nationalpark #nps #nps103 #FindYourPark #goparks #ushistory #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #manzanar #nationalhistoricsite #wwii #worldwarii #sierranevada #nrhp #nationalparkservice #gardens #optoutside #smallparksaturday #todayinhistory (at Manzanar National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-dXhyIjU__/?igshid=elnslvba2gaz

In 1976, my family moved from Dartmouth, back to my father’s boyhood home of West Bay, Cape Breton.  I was seven year old and I only remember a turn off in the road with a sign saying Amherst, and the other pointed to Cape Breton. I recall our introduction to the island was on a twisty turning road that penetrated a never ending forest. There were few homes, no curbs, no street lights. I was horrified our new home in the “Village would be at the end of the earth. I had only known the sprawl of the Halifax and Dartmouth area. I hadn’t yet been introduced to the concept of rural or travel.
Soon after the move my uncle Ainslie MacKay, sold his Pharmacy in Dartmouth and purchased a business called the Border Motel, in the town of Amherst in Nova Scotia.  My father accompanied him for the summer to help transition his brother into his new roll of motel owner, and he took my sister and I along. I seem to recall being excited I would get to see what the “other road” that pointed towards Amherst away from Cape Breton would look like. I had no idea, the “border” stood for the provincial line between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick or I would have been far more excited.

Welcome to Amherst “a top 50 small town in visit in Canada” #seewhyweloveit
I remember three things very clearly;  we drank a lot of pop my uncle had stored in the cellar, I learned the proper way to fold and hang a towel on the towel rack in the bathroom-( I still do it the same way today) and last, when I went out back of the hotel, there was a high grass marshy area with a muddy stream. It was the most foreign landscape I had ever seen.

Wind Mill Farm Fort Lawrence Road
This trip home for the holidays I am on a mission to find this motel and walk around see what it looks like from my adult
As I always do, I stopped at the Nova Scotia Welcome center. Walking through the door, I greet the attendance and then hit them with a question. “Do any of you know where the old Border Motel was located?”  Lucky for me the winter attendance are of the age to remember forty years ago.  One of the gentlemen says “yes it is on the old highway 2,  five minutes from here; old photo of the Border Motel
It seems the topic is worthy of conversation, they continue saying how it use to have a restaurant that was popular. The second attendant adds “the twinning of the Tran Canada Highway, crushed the areas tourism, people know longer stop, they whip right through”
I asked “who owns it? he said an eccentric millionaire. He said ” the building  is still standing but it’s in bad shape” I tell them I want to go see it anyway, its a middle-aged thing, I tell them of my memory of the woolly marsh grasses, ” they nod and say “that hasn’t changed,” part of the Tantramar Marsh.
I tell them I want to know Amherst a bit more, I don’t remember any of it from my summer here. Only what I have learned from traveling through so many times. They mention Fort Lawrence is completed.  I was there in March and there was a sign saying it was an active archaeological site. I showed it in my story Make Any Drive A Road Trip.. This time It is tourist ready.  Here are some of what you can find in the Fort Lawrence area;
Fort Lawrence and Beaubess national Historic Site.
Mount whatley Road, House a National Historic site

Historic Old Post Office
Robert Barry Dickey 1811 to 1903
Dominion Public Building Victoria Street Amherst, Nova Scotia Plaques noting Fathers of confederation
and I don’t feel like going on a historic house tour. No sense in go to the bird sanctuary this time of year, so  I asked one more thing ” any craft breweries?” I am handed a card with the name of the brewery and I head out the door. I moved on to see the what I came here for; the Border Motel.
Tumblr media
I walk the front looking in the windows, the  rooms are filled with boxes most of the ceilings have come down the doors are all locked.  Some windows boarded up.  I see an old TV in one room and possible a bed but most of the acoustic tile ceilings have caved in on top.
I walk around the back and see the matted grassy field I remember.

Just waiting to reclaim the old hotel.  I leave and feel nothing it is a decrepit run down place.  My memories are of a busy hotel of modern up keep. I shall not need to visit again.  I am off in search of  something more vibrant and I think I can find it at the brewery 46 Anson road through town to find the Trider’s Craft beer.
It is just and industrial building but all I need to see is the vehicles lined up outside to know this is a place to get beer.  I push open the door gently, not sure if I am going into a loading dock area, but it is a small room serving several customers. Ashley tells me of the glass wear on sale ” Any discounts on a six pack?” I ask, ” she says no, that was last week”  Figures I would miss it.  Oh well I leave with a  wave and a Merry Christmas
