THE TRAGIC HERO.

you are the good guy who just cannot catch a break. your life just fucking sucks, frankly. one day, you have friends, family, hobbies you enjoy, maybe even a dog. and then, something happens that sets off this never-ending chain reaction of bullshit and it all gets swept away from you in a heartbeat. all your friends are dead now and you might be alive but god at what cost.

THE WHORE.

sure, sex is pleasurable and fun, but do you really think doing the nasty in the middle of a haunted house is smart? there's a murderer out there and you're taking off your clothes which is REALLY ill-advised. you could get tetanus! you seem to be under the impression that you're in a romcom or softcore porno, not a horror movie, and that's a lethal mistake to make.

THE COMIC RELIEF.

you're the jokester, the prankster, the funny little guy who has the meta quips to ease some of that delicious tension the narrative's been building. you're there to lure the audience into a false sense of security so they don't see the next gruesome kill coming. you're probably pathetic and weird but your friends love you. unfortunately, you probably die in the end or you fake everyone out only to die for real in the sequel.

THE KILLER.

oh, you're the one doing all the killing. you're the violent little guy with a chip on your shoulder, the undead nightmare with a mind only for revenge, the unhinged psycho who just likes to inflict pain for fun. either way, you're the catalyst of this whole narrative, the lynchpin on which the entire plot rests. you either die in the end or live on through numerous sequels, prequels, reboots, and spinoffs.

ROUND 1 BRACKET LISTINGS

Welcome to Round 1 of the Wasted Woman Poll, the tournament to see which fridged woman deserved better!

Thank you everyone for your patience for Round 1 to begin. Now that the semester is over, I finished the list of match-ups for the Round 1 bracket.

There were 89 contestants for this tournament. Anyone familiar with tournaments knows that it doing a 89-contestant, single-elimination tournament would be annoying. Rather than cutting out 25 contestants to make it a 64-contestant tournament, I opted to use the format of a 64-contestant tournament, just with some of the poll in Round 1 (a majority of them, actually) being three-way polls with a single winner rather than solely two-way polls. So out of the 89 contestants going into Round 1, only 32 will go on to Round 2. Many of the listings in Round 1 will be characters from the same series going against each other, so that the future rounds will be more varied.

The tournament will be split into 4 sets of 8 polls each, with every poll running for a whole link. Below the cut will be the list of match-ups for each set and when the polls will premiere.

If there are any mistakes at all (spelling, if a character appears twice, if the media someone is listed under is incorrect, etc.) please let me know! I did double-check it, but I'm only human so errors do happen.

IF YOU'LL INDULGE ME AGAIN......... what are your favorite ships from horror content?

I honestly haven't watched enough romantic horror movies; I know this because I googled it and went "oh shit I need to watch ALL of these". I feel like a lot of what I watch re: horror has relationships that are more... psychosexual than romantic?

Hannah/Owen, The Haunting of Bly Manor. I recently rewatched this and my God, one of the most tragic love stories I've ever seen onscreen? But gorgeous? Just when he's lighting the candles at the end and the narration talks about him accompanying her body to the morgue and cleaning her, and about how "he loved her the whole way" and how he loves her still? JESUS. A SOFTER one. I also love Dani and Jamie, but Hannah is my... favorite, so if I had to pick between the two, it's Hannah/Owen.

Louis/Lestat, Interview with the Vampire (2022). Toxic and horrific and I'm oBSESSED. The way this show has Jacob Anderson AND Sam Reid, perfectly cast and giving it their absolute all... with some of the most intense onscreen chemistry I've ever seen... PLEASE. "He was my murderer, maker, my maker, and my lover" lol God.

Gomez and Morticia Addams. I mean, if they count, which I say they do. I love them so much I named my cats after them. And I'm sorry to purists, but the 90s version played by Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston is THE STANDARD. They have such incredible chemistry. They're so in love! They're so horny! They're so goals. I'm literally watching the scene where they're on the couch in the graveyard and she's talking about how one day they're going to be buried together, and they get so worked up they fuck on the couch. And presumably??? Conceive Pubert???? God I love them. Top tier. Inspirational romance.

Google tells me The Mummy counts, so Rick and Evie, obviously. They deserve to be EVERYWHERE.

I kinda loathe to bring up Joss's work, but I do think the Angelus/Darla thing was.... quite formative for me.

Happy Valentine's Day, here are some headcanons of my Choices/Pixelberry OTPs' favorite assets of each other

Ideally I'd make some edits for this holiday and I still might, but there are also a lot of edits I'm working on lol. So have these headcanons for now. Prepare to meet some familiar MCs/pairings as well as a couple of new ones that I haven't talked about a lot!

Evie x Aiden (OG HSS)

Evie: She likes just about all of Aiden. His hair, his eyes, his lips, his lean stomach, his chest, his waist, his hips, his thighs. But probably what she gives the most attention to is his sculpted ass. She's a major ass woman.

Aiden: His personal favorite is Evie's nose as it reminds him of how close she is to him, as stated in the game's canon in the premium carriage ride scene. But what he's most attracted to in my opinion is definitely her chiseled abs and especially her taut muscular biceps and slightly roughened hands. He tends to be most fascinated by hands and arms, and the fact that she's buff especially drives him wild.

Cher x Ajay (HSS:CA)

Cher: Is a big fan of Ajay's ass (fun fact, I can have MC comment on liking his "hot butt" in their premium prom scene in the canon game). But is also an especially big fan of his hourglass figure. She also appreciates his hair quite a bit.

Ajay: All of her face probably, but most especially her eyes.

Jordan x Julian (HSS Prime)

Jordan: Julian's hips (Payton comments on how he has the hips for dancing bachata in Prime so yeah). Cue Julian being surprised at someone who is attracted to an asset of him that isn't his muscles.

Julian: Jordan's muscles. She's the "ridiculously jacked for a nerd under her sweater" trope and that definitely catches his interest.

Jo x Lucas (ILITW)

Jo: Her favorite feature has to be his slender waist, long legs, and overall twinkish figure. Though the LucASS is a very close second. The gel-slicked hair, glasses, old-fashioned and body-hugging dress styles, and his face are just the cherry on top.

Lucas: Initially he can't decide and just says all of her. But in the end, he'd have to go with her hands. And her smile.

Harper/Addison x Tom (ILB)

Harper/Addison: All of him. Just all of his lean-muscle twinkish figure. Okay, her particular favorites would have to be his chest, belly, and thighs, but really they love all of his figure.

Cedric: Easily Jocelyn's abs. IIRC, Joss is also implied to be tall both in ILITW and in ILW, so I think he'd find that pretty hot too.

Peggy x Tyler (MAH)

Peggy: Tyler's ass, no contest. Given Tyler is a track runner, after all.

I can't find the original post but I think I did count CedJoss/JossCed as cunt4cunt and I do consider them as such, I think Cedric's cunty/sarcastic side would really show more when he interacts with Joss. I' can definitely see Ced in the dress holding the gun and Joss in a suit giving the finger now that I think about it (I can also see Joss in the dress pointing the gun, but Cedric doesn't like suits and he isn't quite the type to give the finger so yeah)

I definitely thought of Alan x Maria too but yeah I have the same dilemma there. Maria is absolutely more professional cunt and would be better suited for the serious expression pointing the gun, but Alan is definitely the one in the dress. But you are absolutely right about fem power suit with spindly heels, would definitely fit here.

Come to think of it I can also see Aiden and Evie as this. Aiden in the dress holding the gun and looking serious while Evie's in the suit giving the finger. Evie I think is like Cedric in that she isn't full on cunt in her personality but she does have some cunty mannerisms/tendencies. Holiday Rush (2019)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

Holiday Rush is filled with Christmas well-wishes that feel as genuine as a text message sent on December 26th from a urinal. The concept is there but the picture squanders it thanks to thin characters, predictable turns and unconvincing emotional beats. The fact that it features a (nearly) all-Black cast would've made it stand out. Instead, the choice makes Holiday Rush an even bigger letdown.

Widowed hip-hop radio DJ Rashon “Rush” Williams (Romany Malco) and his best friend/producer Roxy (Sonequa Martin-Green) are shocked when WMLE is bought by a big radio corporation that lets them both go. As Rush attempts to get his spoiled children used to a modest lifestyle living with his aunt Jo (Darlene Love), Roxy acquires an old radio station - a way for her and Rush to get back into the business and maybe fall in love in the process.

A smarter, better film would’ve latched onto the difficulties related to Rush and his four children being forced to downsize. He’s spoiled them rotten. They aren’t at all concerned that their father is jobless through no fault of his own - he’s being replaced by a more pop-friendly, white woman (who only appears in one scene, on a concept poster). In fact, they blame this ordeal on him. To be fair, he's mismanaged his money. He has no savings, not even for his son Jamal’s college tuition. Worse, he was spending cash he didn’t have on a pool he would've only been able to afford with his Christmas bonus (nice reference to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation).

This is where you think the movie will have something to say about being grateful for what's important. Jamal (Amarr M. Wooten) could still apply for scholarships and work hard to get good grades - he was headed for Harvard so presumably, he's a smart young man. Mya (Deysha Nelson) is obsessed with what her followers on Instagram will think when she doesn’t show off some expensive gifts. Isn't it time she stopped focusing on material things? Her younger sisters, Evie and Gabbi (Andrea-Marie and Selena Marie Alphonse) have no grasp on reality whatsoever, as they both wanted miniature horses for Christmas before the news came in. Some kids learn a hard truth when they realize Santa Claus isn't real. These girls have a different wake-up call coming. There's an idea there, one we can all relate to.

A semblance of realism is one thing Holiday Rush does not have. I’m no expert on radio and broadcasting but it seems that neither do writers Sean Dwyer and Greg Cope White. So what if Rush and Roxy buy the old radio station? It’s not like you can build an audience in a day, or that you flip a switch and all systems are a go. Rush and Roxy need more than just one DJ, don’t they? Their plan is to make a big launch on Christmas Eve… but don’t most people listen to the radio on their way to work in their car? And focussing exclusively on Christmas music? It feels like an idea that’ll have them all bankrupt by December 31st. As Christmas becomes more and more about what deals you can get and how many gifts you receive, a reminder about the non-materialistic aspects of the holiday would’ve been a nice refresher. Instead, Holiday Rush has this half-baked, ludicrous plot about a villain that needs to be taken down a peg. Tamala Jones’ Joss Hawkins bullies all her advertisers into refusing to sign with the upcoming station (why? how?) so her numbers can go up.

The weirdest part of Holiday Rush has to be a brief sequence in which Rush talks to the ghost of his late wife, Paula (La La Anthony). You can’t just have a glowing spirit show up for one scene and then never return. Well, unless your objective is to make it clear to the audience that they’re in trouble. The children are insufferable and irritating. The adults stupid. The love plot comes out of nowhere and jumps from 1 to 24 between scenes. It’s like this film was made and directed by little kids who have only the vaguest understanding of how the real world works.

Is Holiday Rush a family comedy? A drama? I couldn’t tell you. It’s not funny. It won’t generate any heartfelt emotions either. I think it was supposed to do make you laugh and reflect on the true meaning of the holidays. The fact that I’m unsure should be enough to dissuade you from wasting your vacation hours. Holiday Rush is a confused, incompetently written and poorly directed mess. (December 23, 2021)

I'm a Joss main first but I had to go back and finish my second playthrough where I went down Amalia lane and OOoooOooooo when she said she was Demisexual you know I slammed my desk so hard with excitement. She's a best friends to lovers AND Demisexual. Also I squealed so loudly when my MC and Joss finally kissed in the slow burn route her dialogue broke my heart "I hope I don't regret this" and she...WALKS AWAY GIRL TALK TO ME. It's my MC your sunshine girl, your little power freak, your good time girl!!!!

Amalia's route is so delicious, we love Eri and Evie for it (and Shionch, for scenes in future updates). And as Joss's slow burn writer, can I just say I'm glad you're enjoying it. This scene was a really enjoyable one to write and I'm so pumped seeing all these reactions to it.

Hello! This might be a bit of an odd one, but do you have any HC recs where the heroine is a product of & generally operates within the constraints of her society? I like a liberated 'I snuck out every night to learn swordplay/ride horses/cast off the shackles of femininity' heroine as much as the next reader, but I feel like somehow I've read a string of them lately and I'd love something different. Thank you!

Sure! I totally get what you mean, and I often prefer these heroines, tbh.

Generally speaking, Alice Coldbreath gets recommended a lot for these. I've only read one of hers (so far) and tbh I wasn't a huge fan, but I do plan on reading more as it was an early work.

Marrying Winterborne comes to mind--Helen is a sweet, gentle, classic debutante. However, I highly, highly recommend reading Cold-Hearted Rake first (which, to be fair, doesn't have a super subversive heroine either) to get the full effect, as Rhys begins courting Helen in that book. Plus, he has his iconic "you want a bit o' rough???" moment.

You've probably read this one, but I find Evie from Devil in Winter fairly conventional, and I think Annabelle from Secrets of a Summer Night is even moooore so. like, Annabelle literally just wants to be a cosseted blue-blooded wife. Win from Seduce Me at Sunrise definitely wants Kev to Claim Her but she's otherwise pretty conventional. Aline from Again the Magic is pretty conventional. Tbh, I think Kleypas has developed a certain rep due to a couple of her more prominent heroines (Sara and Lillian come to mind) being a bit more rebellious, but a lot of her heroines are very conventional ladies.

The heroines from Joss and The Countess and Hugo and The Maiden are pretty conventional in different ways--one is a cold widow who is admittedly sort of like, exploring hookups now that her husband is dead (I don't... think this flouts societal conventions of the time though, tbh; you had a lot more freedom to get yours once you were a widow if your finances were in order). The other heroine is a vicar's daughter who's all about helping the less fortunate, etc.

Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas has a variation of this, but the heroine is less about being a perfect debutante so much as she is the cosmopolitan rich aristo wife who's on the outs with her husband and has her indiscretions... as does he. Until he comes back and demands an heir in exchange for granting the divorce she wants. The Luckiest Lady in London also has a conventional heroine, all about marrying for money etc.

A lot of Lorraine Heath heroines are this to a Jayne from Waking Up with the Duke, Julia from The Earl Takes All, definitely Olivia from Between the Devil and Desire, Franny from Surrender to the Devil (she is lower class but she's otherwise pretty conventional), Aslyn from Beyond Scandal and Desire, etc.

Honoria from Devil's Bride by Stephanie Laurens was a pretty conventional governess type.

I think you'll find that the first four of Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie heroines are by and large pretty conventional--but especially Isabella from Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage.

The heroine from Julie Anne Long's What I Did for a Duke isn't super out of line in any way.

Both heroines from Joanna Shupe's The Lady Gets Lucky and The Bride Goes Rogue are very conventional in a lot of ways (I know many people will cite the French Ball scene from TBGR as suggesting otherwise... but that shit did in fact exist.....)

The heroine of Scarlett Peckham's The Earl I Ruined is very much a typical spoiled society girl.

Stacy Reid also writes a lot of heroines along these lines!
