THE FINAL GIRL.

congrats, you're the one who makes it to the end. your instincts, paranoia, and/or pure fucking stubbornness guide you every bloody step of the way. when the dawn finally breaks, you're the last one left standing. sure, it cost you friends and loved ones and you're going to have one hell of a therapy bill, but at least you're alive.

THE ASSHOLE.

it's not really clear why you have such a massively shitty personality, but for whatever reason, you make it your mission to get on everyone's bad side. everything out of your mouth seems to be perfectly engineered to piss everyone off and your every move is stupid as hell. Secretly, everyone is hoping you get shanked first.

THE TRAGIC HERO.

you are the good guy who just cannot catch a break. your life just fucking sucks, frankly. one day, you have friends, family, hobbies you enjoy, maybe even a dog. and then, something happens that sets off this never-ending chain reaction of bullshit and it all gets swept away from you in a heartbeat. all your friends are dead now and you might be alive but god at what cost.

THE WHORE.

sure, sex is pleasurable and fun, but do you really think doing the nasty in the middle of a haunted house is smart? there's a murderer out there and you're taking off your clothes which is REALLY ill-advised. you could get tetanus! you seem to be under the impression that you're in a romcom or softcore porno, not a horror movie, and that's a lethal mistake to make.

THE COMIC RELIEF.

you're the jokester, the prankster, the funny little guy who has the meta quips to ease some of that delicious tension the narrative's been building. you're there to lure the audience into a false sense of security so they don't see the next gruesome kill coming. you're probably pathetic and weird but your friends love you. unfortunately, you probably die in the end or you fake everyone out only to die for real in the sequel.

THE KILLER.

oh, you're the one doing all the killing. you're the violent little guy with a chip on your shoulder, the undead nightmare with a mind only for revenge, the unhinged psycho who just likes to inflict pain for fun. either way, you're the catalyst of this whole narrative, the lynchpin on which the entire plot rests. you either die in the end or live on through numerous sequels, prequels, reboots, and spinoffs.

THE SIREN.

there’s a comb in one hand, a mirror in the other. you sit on the rocks and admire your reflection, slowly combing your kelp-green hair. the sea hurt you. no — the sailors hurt you. once, you were one of them. once, you had two legs and breathed air. but every ship you sailed on sank, or met bad weather, or did not survive an attack. your shipmates called you cursed, but you held your head high. until that night. amidst a stormy sea, your shipmates took you from your bunk, bound you hand and foot as you thrashed and screamed, and tossed your helpless body into the waves. you cursed as the seawater filled your mouth, filled your lungs, and you fought to take another breath and the world faded to black. but you did not die. you would not die, not until you had gained your revenge. so your bound legs fused into a tail, and your hands broke free of the rope, and you took in your first breath of water beneath the surf.

rejected by the land, the sea claimed you as its own. that ship is gone now. you sat o the rocks, combing your hair, and in doing so spelled its doom. but seeing it smashed and broken in the surf was not enough. not nearly. so here you sit, looking out to the distance for rotten ships and rotten sailors. and if they come close, you smile, and you wave, and you sing to them. all the while knowing you will sig them to their water grave. and you will smile the whole time.

THE BOATSWAIN.

a captain leads their crew. the first mate advises. but you're the one who actually makes things happen on this ship. when the captain gives an order to sail to some place, it's you who gives the crew their duties, to hoist or change or unfurl the sails, to man the guns, to swab the deck, to do whatever needs to be done. and you're right there alongside them, heaving and hauling and fighting just the same. the sailors put their trust in you, and you won't let them down. when they have a problem, you're the first port of call. the captain listens to you, even if you can tell she's not always paying attention. you spend your days before the mast, and your nights in a hammock slung up in the cargo hold. it's often a thankless job - the captain berates you if the crew are unruly, and the crew hate whenever you have to dole out discipline. but if you left, this ship would fall to pieces in an instant. and you love her. you love the sea. you love the job, despite it all. so you work, and you work, and you work, and you don't stop. not until the job is done. and it's never going to be done.

THE CAPTAIN.

this is your ship. oh, but you worked for it. you joined your first pirate crew when you were little older than a child, learning the language of rope and rigging and the roll and sway of the sea. from there, you worked your way up, signing onto ship after ship, tailing sailors twice your age just to learn from example how a ship is run. and learn you did. by the time you turned twenty, there wasn't a shipboard task you couldn't perform. then, one day, you had signed onto a ship under a notoriously bad captain - quick with the lash and slow with the shares. with the rest of the crew, you plotted and planned, and when the time came, you forced the captain and his officers onto an abandoned rock in the ocean, and took command yourself. drunk on victory and rum, you promised your crew that you would be a fair captain, a shrewd captain, and make them all rich. every day your head buzzes with plans and schemes, prizes more ambitious than the last. yes, every pirate's luck runs dry eventually, but they haven't caught you yet, and you're proud of that fact. so you'll raid, and you'll fight, and you'll keep shipping out. these are your seas. and you'll hold them until your body rots in the deep.
