Genuine questions, for anyone who has flown with forearm crutches (or a mobility aid similar): how was the experience? What advice would you give someone about to do so for the first time in a few weeks? What should I prepare for? How can I carry my luggage as a crutch user?

Musculoskeletal Disorder Treatments in Ayurveda
Tumblr media
Pain is a commonly occurring problem that is particularly prevalent in older adults. Continuous pain may by the result of musculoskeletal conditions; neuropathic conditions trauma or limb amputation.
Musculoskeletal disorders include typical disorders like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), Cervical Spondylosis (CS), Osteoarthritis (OA), and Lower back pain (LBA).
Musculoskeletal disorders are problems that can happen in your muscles, tendons, nerves, and other body parts. They can make you feel pain, limit how you can move, and even make it hard to work or spend time with friends. These issues are pretty common at work. Some can be really painful and stop you from doing everyday stuff.
In Ayurveda, the main causative factor for musculoskeletal disorder is aggravated Vata Dosha. Nedan Sevan like Vata vitiating foods, excessive physical work, intake of unwholesome food, sedentary lifestyle, etc. leads to aggravation of the Vata Dosha. The aggravated Vata blocks all the empty channels of the body leading to the development of the disorder within a portion of the body or entire body.
Symptoms of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Burning sensations in muscles
Aching and stiffness
Fatigue
Pain worsens with movements
Disturbed sleep
Muscle twitching
Swelling
Limited range of motion of affected joints
Sometimes redness of the overlying skin
Bruising and discoloration
Causes of Musculoskeletal Disorders
Age: The risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders gradually increases with old age
Lifestyle: The way you live and what you do daily can play a role.
Family History: Having a history of MSDs in the family may increase the risk of developing MSD
Repetitive Movements: Doing the same motions over and over again can be a cause.
Poor Posture at Work: If you sit or stand in a bad way while working, it might lead to problems.
Daily Computer Use: Working on a computer every day can be a factor.
Lifting Heavy Things: Picking up heavy objects can also contribute to these disorders.
Ayurvedic Solutions for Musculoskeletal Disorders:
Apart from certain Ayurvedic medicines and herbs, there are certain panchakarma procedures that are used to treat musculoskeletal problems:
Abhyanga: A full-body massage with warm, herb-infused oils for 45 minutes. It promotes skin health and can help with conditions like osteoarthritis, body aches, and obesity.
Padabhyanga: A special foot massage that relieves issues like roughness, stiffness, dryness, numbness, and tingling sensations in the feet and legs. It also relaxes and revitalizes the central nervous system.
Njavarakizhi: Medicated oil is applied to the body, followed by a massage with warm muslin bag boluses containing cooked njavara rice. It’s beneficial for conditions like rheumatism, high blood pressure, joint aches, and muscle weakness.
Virechana: This therapy cleanses the body, especially the liver and gallbladder, by clearing toxins and excess pitta. It purifies the blood and the gastrointestinal tract.
KatiVasti: Vasti treatments are excellent for Lower back pains. They help eliminate doshas from the body through the intestinal tract.
Janu Vasti: A therapy where medicinal oils are poured around the knee joints in a specially created compartment, using gram flour.
Rasayana Treatment: This treatment reduces oxidative stress and free radical damage, making it effective for osteoarthritis.
Snehana and Brimhana: These treatments normalize bone health and control the cell-level fire rule (dhatwagni) and tissue transformation (Dhatus).
Choorna Swedam: An intensive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, involving a vigorous massage with herbal powder bundles across the entire body.

there's a lot of talk about joint pain in chronic illness communities which like fair, it hurts like a bitch. but shoutout to my fellow spoonies who are painfully incapacitated by things like muscle spasticity and nerve compression. just because people can't see red, swollen, dislocated, or malformed joints doesn't make your pain not real. and extra shoutout to spoonies who deal with all these types of pain, because i know how hard it makes things.

Over a year later: Huh. I may have settled into a decent routine. Acupuncture sessions once a month appears to be exactly what I needed. Good for me.

This is me. Right now. It's 3:45 AM. I've taken all my nighttime medication and yet my brain decided to chop me up into polyphasic sleep, which is great, when I actually get sleep out of it. Unlike right now.

I think it's both sad and hilarious to see the difference between how small children react to disabled people and how teenagers/adults react to discabled people.
Small children are just curious and want to understand why and how things work, so of course when I'm walking with my cane and limping and taking walking breaks, they're going to be confused. Sometimes their questions are blunt but it's obvious they're just curious and mean well.
And then there's everyone else. They don't even want to know about why you're disabled or anything, they just want proof that you are allowed to be disabled (like that's a fucking thing). And every time they say shit like "well prove it. Prove that you're disabled" I just look at them with a confused face. Who the fuck do you think you are, demanding to see my personal medical records, move the fuck out of the disabled parking space you abled piece of shit.

i have a lot of chronic pain ive been diagnosed with amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome and my rheumatologist is doing tests for rheumatoid arthritis, i also have postural orthostatic tychardia (i def spelled some of that wrong).
i work a couple times a week for 6-10 hours and my pain and symptoms have gotten signifigantly worse but i dont want to be that asshole that quits during the holidays.
also does anyone else remember that “i am in unspeakable pain” meme cuz i swear it was real but nobody i know remembers it.

"please contact your provider"
they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions but your first glance at me is filled with assumptions when your diagnosis is three times the length of your name you start defining yourself by the scale of your pain package your symptoms in takeable pills your body exists in a battle of wills i use a guitar to help me describe the amplified pain that burns through my insides but guitars get to rest at the end of a song while i'll go on forever with a body all wrong

I know desensitization therapy is good for AMPS/fibromyalgia but I think it IS a little traumatizing to push myself to the exact same standard whether I can blow through school easy or I’m literally struggling to leave bed… I get that it’s a pain signal problem but I AM miserable like 90 percent of my life 💀

I don't have arthritis but sometimes "I have a complex neurological disorder that causes malfunctions in my sensory processing, predominantly in the form of chronic pain, and this can cause me mobility issues, fatigue, temperature sensitivity, and skin discoloration, plus the easiest thing to do would be to call it fibromyalgia but the misconceptions from the 90s that this isn't a real diagnosis are still so prevalent that if I say that term I risk you not taking me seriously" is a lot more drawn out than "oghc my rheumatism"
