"Do you have date for Prom yet?" Kat asks through the screen of the facetime call. You were rummaging through all your dresses and outfits trying to pick on out for this party you guys were going to tonight.
"Ugh, don't remind me." You sigh. It was going to be really hard to find a prom date that wasn't looking to score you because of a stupid game.
"I just want to find a genuine guy. This sucks."
"Bitch, prom is next weekend. What are we going to do? This is senior prom we are talking about." Kat flails her arms before crossing them in thought.
"Why don't you just ask Sam. You literally won't stop thinking about him. Just go for it." You wiggle your brows at her as her face twists in disgust.
"Ew, I'm not asking a boy to prom. They need to ask me. Duh.... And I don't think about Sam Golbach. Gross." You laugh at her response. She was so dramatic but you wouldn't trade her for the world. She was the only one that didn't turn her back on you after the 'game' started. She never got jealous or changed her view of you in any way. She was indeed your best friend.
"What about you and Mr. Brock? You're telling me there isn't anything going on there?" You roll your eyes, trying to ignore her question.
"Bitch, you're dumb. Do you think I should just go with a little black dress moment? What do you think?" You hold it up against your body, modeling it for her.
"Oh yeah! And I have a cute little red one, we can complement each other!" You nod in agreement, happy to have a plan of what to wear, now it was a matter of being ready and looking hot. You had to make the 'game' interesting.
"Where is this party anyway. You didn't tell me anything except 'we are going to a party.' and now I'm curious." She sheepishly looks over at you.
"Well, it's sort of... at Sam and Colby's house." Your eyes go wide.
"Why wouldn't you tell me that!"
"Because I was afraid you wouldn't go." Kat was right. after what happened at school, the last thing you would have wanted was to go to Colby and Sam's house but it looks like this time, you have no choice.
"You are so lucky I love you." You laugh at Kat. It was a good thing there was going to be alcohol because you were going to need it.

"This is their house?" You marvel. It was huge. Where did they get the money for this?
"Oh yeah, this is your first major party. Yeah, they always host the biggest 'Before Prom Party' both this year and last year. It's always a rager." You pull your dress down a bit, suddenly very aware of how short it was. Kat grabs your arm and pulls you to the door. Unfortunately you don't go unnoticed. The minute you and Kat walk in the door, the music stops and the room goes silent before you hear somebody speak from the top of the stairs in front of you.
"Y/N is here." The audience cheers and its deafening. The music starts to play and a path opens for you towards the kitchen where there sits a familiar dark haired boy staring at you.
"Y/N has shown up to one of MY parties? This is insane." Colby giggles at your look and pours a drink, handing it to you.
"For you." Colby winks at you while holding out the red solo cup.
"Hey, what about me?" Kat spats.
"You're not the guest of honor. I see you all the time." Colby scoffs.
"I'M the one that got her to come here so I deserve some compensation." Kat stomps her foot like a child, seething at Colby's sarcasm.
"It's okay, Kat. I gotchu." Sam speaks from behind us as he makes his way into the kitchen.
"I'LL show my gratitude for the arrival of our guest thanks to you, Kat."
Thank you. At least someone appreciates me." She scowls at Colby before he laughs and passes you to leave.
"Have fun, drink up." He winks at you before walking out.
"You never told me you were sort of close with them, Kat." You kind of feel a little sad.
"I go to a lot of their parties so it's kind of inevitable to not be social with them. Plus, I'd rather talk to them than any of these knuckleheads but when it's school, we don't speak." She explains. It still would have been nice to know. Regardless, you down your drink and pour another. You came to get drunk and drunk you shall be. You and Kat are glued to each other's side until you are about four more drinks deep. The night was going exactly how you thought, every man coming up to you trying to shoot their shot. It was exhausting. This was the point when you end up losing Kat and go looking for her. The only problem is, now the drinks are starting to hit you. Your vision is blurry and foggy, everything is delayed. The music is unbearably loud and now without Kat, you were starting to panic.
You find an empty corner and stand there trying to gain your bearings but nothing was working. Your eyes scan the sea of dancing bodies for Kat but no luck.
"Hey Y/N. You okay?" Your thoughts were disrupted by Colby who you were pretty sure had just appeared out of nowhere. His hand touches your arm as if to stabilize you.
"To be honest, I'm fucked up and need to go home." You try to yell over the music but it was so loud. He looks around and nods for you to follow him. You both go up the stairs and down a busy hallway, bee-lining it to a door which Colby pulls out a key and unlocks. He leads you inside and the door shuts with him locking it again.
It was Colby's room. It reflected him almost to a tee. The dark and brooding lighting, the black bed sheets, curtains and couch. you were undeniably in his room.
"I know it's super overwhelming out there. It's more quiet in here. You can sit on the couch. Gimme a second." He rushes to the bathroom attached to the room and shuts the door. You look around the slightly spinning room. It was way more quiet here. Your headache was slowly subsiding.
Colby comes back out and he sits next to you.
"Are you okay?" He places his hand on your knee. You nod your head, not saying anything. Your eyes dart to his. they were a very pretty blue. The contrast even stronger with his dark, black hair. You take in his facial features, darting down his neck, his chest and then subconsciously his crotch. Your train of thought fumbled by his finger grabbing your chin, forcing you to look at him.
"Y/N. Are you good? You need to lay down?" Without thinking you lean forward, pressing your lips against his gently. His lips were surprisingly soft. It was probably the alcohol, you were never this forward. It takes Colby a minute to realise what's happening before he starts following along. His lips dancing with yours, lightly biting your bottom lip. You decide you weren't trying to fight it so you let his tongue slide past, exploring every part of your mouth. The heat of your body starts to rush to your head. The kiss getting heavier with every second. You eventually move into his lap, straddling his legs. Your hands find the back of his neck, pulling him into you. Your bodies are pressed close together while his hands find their place on your now uncovered ass, your dress riding up your thighs. You were about to make some very bad decisions. Or so you thought before Colby breaks the kiss.
"Hey, I think we should tone it down a bit." Colby moves your hair out of your blushing face, your feelings on top of the alcohol misting your face with a pink hue. You lean in again and start kissing him once more, you can feel his arousal under yours as you desperately try to deepen the kiss but again, he pulls away.
"Y/N, seriously. Please, we are not doing anything else. You're drunk. You need to go to sleep."
"Mmmm you're right but... I feeeeel so good nooow." You slur as he stares into your eyes. Your hands roam his chest and then his abs. You pout and he leans in placing a quick peck, taking you by surprise due to being impaired.
"I know you do but I think we should revisit this when you're sober, okay?" With his hands still on your ass, he locks his fingers while leaning forward. He stands up, picking you up in the process and walking you over to his bed. He places you down and walks over to his dresser, grabbing a shirt and tossing it your way. You barely catch it and immediately starts taking your dress off with the awkward realisation that you would need help with the zipper.
"uhm... Colby , could you.."
"Yeah, lemme just..." He delicately pulls the zipper down your back, causing chills to run down your spine.
"Thanks. Now turn back around." You mumble. You don't have to tell him twice. He patiently waits for you to finish.
Once you are covered, he lays you down and covers you with the blanket. He turns to leave but you grab him quickly.
"Colby, will you take me to Prom?" You try your best not to slur your words. You genuinely wanted him to. He chuckles at your request.
"I'll give you an answer when you wake up, okay?" You nod before finally letting go of his shirt. Within seconds, you are out cold. He turns off the lights and heads back out to the party.

Colby's POV:
Now that she was asleep, I check the time. 3am. The music had gotten quieter and over half the amount of people were still here and leaving.
'I need to find Sam.' I start looking around the house, picking up cups and plates and throwing away trash as I find it. I head back up the stairs when I don't find him in the kitchen or living room. I hit Sam's room, knocking on the door. He was definitely in there as I heard him shuffling to answer.
"Hey, what's up." He peeks his head out, clearly very much not wearing any clothes. He was holding his door close to shut so I couldn't see past him but there was definitely someone in there with him.
"Hey, tell Kat that Y/N is asleep in my room. I'm going to be sleeping in the living room. I'll clean up a little before I sleep." Sam blushes when he figures out that I know. He nods and closes the door, returning to doing whatever they were doing.
I yawn and start walking around with a trash bag. Everyone left except Jake, Corey, Seth and Nate, them being passed out in random areas of the house. It's not long before I decide the house is clean enough and I pass out too, on the couch in the living room.

Miss Bettie Page (above), sixteen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Page, 893 Carter Lane, has been named winner of the DAR medal at Hume-Fogg High School. The medal is awarded on the basis of scholarship, good citizenship, and dependability, and the recipient is chosen by the seniors and members of the faculty. Miss Page, a senior, was also voted the girl-most-likely-to-succeed in the senior class. In 1938 and 1939 she was voted the most intelligent sophomore and junior. She is former secretary) and treasurer of the Student Council and is a member of both the College and Dramatic Clubs. She is manager of the latter for the spring term this year. This outstanding student is a co-editor of the school publication, The Fogg-Horn, and recently was elected co-editor-in-chief of The Echo, annual Senior publication. For the last three years her name has appeared on the honor roll.

WAR IN GAZA, DAY 264: SENIOR ISRAELI OFFICIALS AND ACADEMICS DEMAND U.S. CANCEL NETANYAHU'S VISIT TO CONGRESS, GENOCIDE GOES ON AS CIVILIANS ARE TARGETED BY OCCUPATION BOMBS
On 264th day of the Israeli occupation's ongoing special genocide operation in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) committed a total of 4 new massacres of Palestinian families, resulting in the deaths of no less than 60 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, while another 140 others were wounded over the previous 24-hours.
It should be noted that as a result of the constant Israeli bombardment of Gaza's healthcare system, infrastructure, residential and commercial buildings, local paramedic and civil defense crews are unable to recover countless hundreds, even thousands, of victims who remain trapped under the rubble, or who's bodies remain strewn across the streets of Gaza.
This leaves the official death toll vastly undercounted as Gaza's healthcare officials are unable to accurately tally those killed and maimed in this genocide, which must be kept in mind when considering the scale of the mass murder.
Writing in an opinion piece published by the New York Times, several former Israeli officials and academics have called upon the United States to cancel a planned speech to the Congress by the embattled Zionist entity's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The officials writing the opinion piece include David Harel, President of the Israeli Academy of the Sciences and Humanities; Tamir Pardo, former director of the Mossad spy agency; Talia Sasson, former director of the special tasks department at "Israel's" State Attorney's Office; Ehud Barack, the former Israeli Prime Minister; and Aaron Ciechanover, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The officials and academics write that inviting Netanyahu to speak before Congress is a "terrible mistake," and that his appearance before Congress will "not represent the State of Israel and its citizens," resulting in the rewarding of Netanyahu's "scandalous and destructive conduct."
Coming from positions of politics, the sciences, technology, defense and law, the writers feel they are well placed to judge the effects of Netanyahu's extremist government, adding that "like many, we believe that he is driving Israel downhill at an alarming speed, to the extent that we may eventually lose the country we love."
The officials continue by saying that Netanyahu and his regime have failed to create a plan for ending the war in the Gaza Strip, and that the Occupation Prime Minister has been unable to secure the release of Israeli hostages detained by the Palestinian Resistance in the Strip.
"At the very least, an invitation to address Congress should have been contingent upon resolving these two issues and, in addition, calling for new elections in Israel," they write in the Times.
The officials go on to declare that, "Inviting Mr. Netanyahu will reward his contempt for U.S. efforts to establish a peace plan, allow more aid to the beleaguered people of Gaza and do a better job of sparing civilians."
They warn that, again and again, the Netanyahu administration has rejected U.S. President Joe Biden's plans to remove Hamas from its position of power in the Gaza Strip by establishing a peacekeeping force in the Palestinian enclave.
"Such a move would very likely bring in its wake a far broader regional alliance, including a vision to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which is not only in Israel’s interest but also in the interest of both political parties in the United States. Mr. Netanyahu constitutes the main obstacle to these outcomes," the officials said in the Times.
"The man who will address Congress next month has failed to assume responsibility for the blunders that allowed the Hamas assault, initially blaming security chiefs (then quickly backtracking), and has yet to announce the establishment of a direly needed state commission of inquiry headed by a Supreme Court judge to look into the fiasco," they added.
The writers go on to list the many ways in which the Israeli Prime Minister has weakened the Israeli occupation, while giving examples of the ways in which Netanyahu's coalition partners endanger the rights of Israeli citizens, including the example of the violent suppression of Israeli protests against the government, as well as Netanyahu's insistence on enshrining into law the exemption from military service for the Ultra-Orthodox at a time of war.
"Above all, many Israelis are convinced that Mr. Netanyahu has obstructed proposed deals with Hamas that would have led to the release of the hostages in order to keep the war going and thus avoid the inevitable political reckoning he will face when it ends," the former officials and academics said of Netanyahu's corrupt administration.
The writers go on to point to Israeli public opinion, which they say has turned against the Prime Minister's administration as Netanyahu's coalition hangs on tightly to its slim majority in the Israeli Knesset.
The officials continue by slamming Netanyahu's seeming lack of concern for the hundreds of thousands of Israelis displaced by Hezbollah's retaliation in the north of the occupied Palestinian territories, resulting from the continued Zionist aggression in the Gaza Strip, while growing demonstrations in the occupied territories threaten Netanyahu's position as the protest movement continues to grow in strength.
"That’s where Mr. Netanyahu’s speech to Congress fits in with his political needs. No doubt it will be carefully stage-managed to prop up his shaky hold on power and allow him to boast to his constituents about America’s so-called support for his failed policies," the officials said of Netanyahu's speech to Congress.
They warn that Likud and the far-right's supporters in the occupied territories will be emboldened by the speech before Congress, coming to the conclusion that it will further hinder the chances of making a deal that could see the Israeli hostages released.
The officials conclude by saying, "Giving Mr. Netanyahu the stage in Washington will all but dismiss the rage and pain of his people, as expressed in the demonstrations throughout the country. American lawmakers should not let that happen. They should ask Mr. Netanyahu to stay home."
Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation's ongoing special genocide operation continued in the Gaza Strip, with several airstrikes overnight and into the morning that resulted in dozens of casualties.
In just a few examples of the Zionist entity's war crimes in Gaza, an occupation air raid targeted a residential house belonging to the Abu Awad family in the city of Beit Lahiya, in the northern Gaza Strip, with initial reports stating that three Palestinians were killed in the assault, while at least a dozen others were wounded.
Subsequently, additional reporting stated the death toll in the Beit Lahiya strike had risen to 15, while several others remained in critical condition.
Following that strike, occupation aircraft fired a missile towards a gathering of civilians attempting to obtain an internet signal in the Al-Jarn area of the town of Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip, after which, three Palestinians who were killed in the strike were transferred to the Indonesian Hospital in the city of Beit Lahiya.
At the same time, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) bombed, and detonated with explosives, several residential homes in neighborhoods southwest of Gaza City, as well as the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, southeast of the city, while the systematic destruction of residential neighborhoods and public infrastructure in the city of Rafah in the south continued unabated.
According to local reporting, the occupation army detonated a number of residential squares in the Saudi neighborhood, west of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, as well as in neighborhoods east and northeast of Khan Yunis, while violent occupation artillery shelling and airstrikes hammered the Nuseirat Camp, in the central Gaza Strip.
Local reporting states that a number of civilians were killed, and many others wounded, as a result of IOF artillery shelling of various neighborhoods of Gaza City, including the Al-Sabra, Al-Zaytoun, and Tal al-Hawa neighborhoods.
Simultaneously, Zionist artillery detatchments resumed their bombardment of the eastern areas of the Bureij Refugee Camp, as well as targeting agricultural lands west of the Nuseirat Camp, both in the central Gaza Strip.
Local reports write that 5 civilians were killed in an artillery strike, and were subsequently taken to Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat Camp after being targeted in their residential apartment, while occupation artillery shelling also targeted farmers in the grape vineyards, west of the New Camp area in the Nuseirat Camp.
Occupation soldiers also detonated a number of residential buildings in the vicinity of the Zoroub roundabout, west of the city of Rafah, south of Gaza, coinciding with heavy artillery shelling of the central and western neighborhoods of the city.
Palestinian sources have also reported that a number of wounded civilians arrived at the European Gaza Hospital in the city of Khan Yunis, south of Gaza, after intense occupation bombing pummeled citizen's homes in the town of Al-Khuza'a.
As a result of the Israeli occupation's ongoing war of extermination in the Gaza Strip, the infinitely rising death toll now exceeds 37'718 Palestinians killed, including at least 10'000 women and more than 15'000 children, while another 86'377 others have been wounded since the start of the current round of Zionist aggression, beginning with the events of October 7th, 2023.

David Copperfield (Daniel Radcliffe) lives a nearly-idyllic existence with his beautiful mother Clara (Emilia Fox) and their housekeeper Peggotty (Pauline Quirke). His life changes forever when his mother re-marries. Mr. Murdstone (Trevor Eve) is a no-nonsense businessman and a strict disciplinarian who believes in corporal punishment. David is soon sent to a strict boarding school, but when his mother dies, his stepfather sends him to London to work in a foul-smelling factory. He forms a close friendship with Mr. Micawber (Bob Hoskins) and moves in with the man and his loving family, but as the Micawbers are forced by circumstance to relocate, he seeks out his aunt Betsey Trotwood (Dame Maggie Smith). She sends him to fine school and he lodges with Mr. Wickfield (Oliver Ford Davies) and his daughter Agnes (Antonia Corrigan). If Trey, Idia, and Lilia are working together, or at least Idia and Trey, then there must have been a reason why that piece of paper lasted through time.
Leona did make a contract with Azul, which Azul didn't remember. But, we did see it in Azul's SSR. Leona turned all the contracts into sand, even if he didn't meet any of the conditions.
I think we should keep in mind with unique magics: We don't know the limits to them.
If we can see it in this loop, then Azul's contract has a power stronger than the power of "looping worlds". This actually makes sense because magic isn't perfect; it's hard for someone to do something as "turning back time" while it erases people's memories, like powerful people like Lilia and Malleus, as well as those who are observant.
So, I think Trey and Idia must have made a letter using Azul's "It's a deal" as a base, which lead them to create a letter out of parchment, or just paper.
I also said, there is a chance that Octavinelle might have died. If that did happen, then it's still possible to get something like a contract. Contracts have conditions that need to be met, Vil has the power to create a curse. He may not be able to undo the curse, however, it's possible that if he touched the paper and used his curse and put some conditions into it, the paper may last through loops, like the contract.
The Grim blot is something we can never beat. And this is where the small potion bottle comes in.
If we can't defeat them, then shrink them.
Trey has a bottle, which I assume is the "Drink Me" potion, which has the power to shrink. I don't think it lasted long on Grim, but it could have bought some time.
If it was written during that time, I can assume it might have overlapped with Malleus's blot, then the letter's meaning would change a little. I also think this would also be a letter to MC, but indirectly.
The OG letter:

The argument would be with Malleus and Idia, which got Trey and some other members of hearts in.
The over-blot count down would still be the same but, the part of the "zephyr", would probably be the person who receives Malleus's true love, which I assume is "friendship"
The "Learn Groove" or unexpected things could also point to the over-blot; which can be unexpected.
Here's the OG contract written:
"I am wishing mate
I wishes senior siring
nephew smiling
inwhere inway amaging waiting
winner winter welcoming
where wide whichever via where wiser anniversary"
Another thing, Azul Ashengrotto isn't the type to make a contract with someone without threatening them, so if we read it like a threat it can also be read like this:
"This is a contract (ambushing) until the end of the year (winter of victory, which I assume is the Grim fight). When the deadline is exceeded (After the anniversary), I shall come to pick you up. I hope you make a wise decision. We will be expecting (waiting for you) your answer. I (Azul) wish everyone, including your brother and nephew a smile. (He's probably threatening Leona with people he cares about)"
This may sound very cruel, but if I'm correct about Leona setting up Azul to blot, then this makes sense. But, this contract is destroyed by Leona, so there's nothing to worry about now.
If it's written by Azul now, it can be read as something like:
"I (Azul) want a companion to correct the loop.
I wish Cheka and Leona's brother to smile regardless of the fact that they were also involved in this situation.
I will be waiting for you to find an opportunity to win and have a fight. (Like in the tutorial)
We shall arrive at the place where the winter of victory, or the place where MC wins and returns to the world.
After the wise anniversary, which is the victory about the decisive battle, and MC's return to their world, I hope that time can go forward forever, and not in a loop."

I DID like that we got insight into how Melissa gives advice to the older girls, and despite it being ~ 5 years since she taught them she’s who helps them with these sorts of problems.
Adding to that I love the dual mom energy of barbara and melissa together
Barbara reading gregory to FILTH lmao, he’s messed with her real daughter and her work daughter and now this baby too, she is rightfully tired of him.
Overall wasn’t feeling it as much as last week. The jokes and lines are so good but the overall story didn’t really hit for me.
And why no follow up on Melissa’s break up?

Actor Darren Criss Discusses Bringing ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ To Broadway

“An original, new musical on Broadway - can you believe that?”
That is the excitement that Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor Darren Criss brought to our new conversation this week about his Maybe Happy Endingproduction coming to Broadway, with previews starting October 16 and its opening night set for November 12.
Previously known for his memorable performances on hit television series like Glee and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, as well as his previous involvement in celebrated live theatre productions including American Buffalo, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Little Shop of Horrors, Criss, 37, is now preparing to play Oliver on-stage, a robot referred to as a Helperbot 3 that has been long retired and is considered obsolete, now spending his days in isolation in his one-room apartment on the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea. That all changes when Oliver forms an unlikely connection with a fellow Helperbot neighbor named Claire (played by Helen J Shen).
I sat down with Criss in New York City, New York, just down the street from his Maybe Happy Ending’s upcoming Belasco Theatre venue, wondering first how this production and his interest in this rather unique character of Oliver initially got on his radar.
Criss said, “Two men that I’m very grateful for in my life, Mr. Jeffrey Richards, whose the lead producer of the show, who I have had a long standing relationship, as far as doing theatre on Broadway is concerned. We came in contact more than a decade ago when we were doing a reading of American Buffalo, which I would do basically a decade later with him. He’s always sent me cool things and cool projects. Separately, Michael Arden has been a friend for a very long day. He has been in sort of more my friends circle than my professional circle - I went to college with his husband. I’ve seen almost every single thing he’s ever directed - I think I missed one thing. These are two guys that I have always admired and appreciated, as far as their output was in the theatre community. The Venn diagrams became one circle when Jeffrey sent me an email about this several years ago. Michael was a part of it and wherever Michael is, I run!”
Being a musical set in Asia and Criss being half-Filipino himself, with several other Asian artists working alongside him on this project, I was curious if Criss takes extra pride in being able to tell a story like Maybe Happy Ending live on on-stage and soon get to share it with our world.
“Of course, I do,” Criss said. “There’s obviously a huge amount of personal ‘woo-hoo’ to the idea that this is predominantly an Asian, Asian-American company - on-stage and off-stage - but I’m always weary to categorize this as an Asian show or an Asian story. This production happens to celebrate and represent Asian-ness to a really fun degree, but there’s so much universal-ness to it and accessibility to the story that I hope in perpetuity, this is something that can be done anywhere, with anyone, at any time. I don’t think I’m trying to say that to be inclusive of all things and people. It’s me being pragmatic - this is a story about a future world - about sentient robots that really doesn’t have any particular cultural background, other than the cultural background of technology, which is based in the human experience.”
Criss added with his Maybe Happy Ending collaborators in mind: “I think all of us enjoy sharing our sort of Asian heritage with each other, and obviously, that’s a large spectrum - that’s not one thing. So, there’s already an eclecticism between all of our Asian experiences that’s fun to bring to the table. Yes, it does take place in Seoul, it is from South Korea, but this show has already had great success in Korea, Japan and China - which while all Asian, make no mistake - are very different cultures. So, if that’s any indication of the ability for this show to resonate with all people, then I think we’re in good shape.”
He is not the only person on this production embracing this collective experience. Shen says of interactions so far with co-star Criss, “I think he’s been really generous with his energy and his time. As a person who, I can sometimes feel a little young in this space, I feel like I’m new to this. I’m making my Broadway debut - there’s a lot of imposter syndrome and words of doubt that can be flooding my brain. He is always the first person to say, ‘You belong here. You deserve to be here. You’ve worked very hard - and just breathe and take up space.’ That has been so invaluable to have somebody understand what this feeling can be, of how scary and overwhelming it can be, and be like, ‘This is an exciting moment! We’re present here - let’s soak it in!’ He’s been such a champion of that.”
Arden, who is the director of Maybe Happy Ending, said of Criss, “Darren is so incredible. He can do everything - it’s really somewhat annoying. He understands things from the inside out and the outside in - and so, to meet him and the rest of this company, honestly, in the process, it just means that we get to kind of like create this thing together. It’s not like my vision upon them - it’s something that we can all create together.”
Hue Park and Will Aronson, who have led the way with the music and lyrics in Maybe Happy Ending, have nothing but respect and admiration to say about Criss.
Park said, “I think he’s just perfect for the role - his sense of humor, his acting skills, his sensibility creating this character based on our text and music. It’s just so exciting to see.
Aronson added of Criss: “He has a boyish innocence, which really is perfect for this show - and his creativity. The great thing about live theatre is that it’s already true in the rehearsal room - it’ll be true in the theatre, once it’s running - that the actors are creating it every time they perform it, meaning that the jokes are different every time, even if the text is the same. The chemistry is different, depending on what the actors are creating in their scene together. The cast is just incredible, so of course, they’re finding that and they’re creating that.”
Dez Duron, who plays Gil in Maybe Happy Ending, said of Criss’s character and his performance so far, “Oliver is a really big role - he’s on-stage pretty much the whole time. I’ve been loving watching him tackle this role, and explore it and discover it. I’ve been a part of this project for five years, so watching [Criss] kind of like get into the script and the changes he’s bringing to it and the new life he’s breathing into it has been really inspiring to watch.”
Marcus Choi, who plays James in the new musical, said of his co-star, “So, Darren Criss has always been on my radar - we’re all very familiar with his body of work. He’s been incredible for so long, but when I got a chance to go to Elsie Fest last weekend, I really got to see him shine. He is just such a force on-stage and just oozes charisma. I mean, I’ve always been a fan but I just have a deep appreciation for him now and just how hard he works.”
Even though this can be perceived as a sci-fi production, being that it centers around robots that are no longer seen of use in the world, I asked Criss if he sees the parallels towards humanity within our real world with this story about love and still finding connection.
Darren said, “Yes! The Helperbots in our show are somewhere between servants, pets and children - and old folks. If we did a show about old folks in a home, it might hit a little too close to home - it might be a little too on the nose. I think some of the most human themes that I’ve been taken with are stories about cartoon animals or toys - things that represent the human experience in a way that I actually am more likely to internalize and pick up on. So, I think that’s what one of the great devices of the show is - to sort of displace the human experience through that of a sentient robot. Yes, we all - surprise, surprise - we all have a shelf life. We are all at some point going to be, in the eyes of society, obsolete in some respect. We all have a battery life. This is less talking about the idea of mortality and concept of transience, and the idea that we can only spend our battery life on so much, thinking about What are you going to spend your battery life on? So yes, that is going to hit audiences, hopefully, in a profound way.”
As I concluded my conversation with Criss about his Maybe Happy Ending Broadway production, I wondered what Criss would want to say to Oliver, after embodying him so far in rehearsals, continuing to better understand the character and preparing to share his compassionate story with our world throughout the fall season and beyond
Criss said, “The same thing that I think hopefully the show will posit, which is - It’ll be okay. It’ll always be okay.”

MASTERPIECE PBS and Mammoth Screen have announced the remaining casting for its upcoming adaptation of The Forsyte Saga.
Fiona Button (The Split) plays Mrs. Clarissa Heron, Irene’s (Millie Gibson) stepmother and Tristan Sturrock (Poldark) plays Professor Heron, Irene’s father.
Justine Moore (Call the Midwife) plays June Forsyte, the 18-year-old daughter of Frances (Tuppence Middleton) and stepdaughter of Jolyon Forsyte (Danny Griffin).
Eleanor Jackson (The Royal Mob) is Winifred Forsyte, daughter of James (Jack Davenport) and wife of Monty (Tom Durant Pritchard). Naomi Frederick (Belgravia) plays Emily Forsyte, James’ wife.
Sharon Rose (Silent Witness) is Alicia Cole, wife of Jolyon’s best friend Isaac (Owen Igiehon).
They join the previously announced ensemble which includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.
BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co. Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.
Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames. Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law. Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.
Planned as a lavish returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives and loves of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London.
The Forsyte Saga is directed by Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) and is produced by Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow). Filming is currently underway in the UK and Venice, Italy. The executive producers are Sheena Bucktowonsing, Debbie Horsfield, Meenu Gaur and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, and Susanne Simpson for MASTERPIECE.

''Does the world need another cinematic representation of the Ripley story?' That is the question I asked myself when the teaser, and then trailer, of the new Netflix series dropped a few months ago.
I answered the question myself: 'Yes, of course, we can definitely do with more Ripley on the screen, even when I know the story so well.'
I have been a fan of the films based on the character Tom Ripley, a conniving imposter, an insecure man and yet utterly charming, created by Patricia Highsmith in her five Ripley books also referred to as Ripliad, starting with The Talented Mr Ripley (1955), the source for the 1960 French film Purple Noon directed by Rene Clement (the restored version of the film was re-introduced to the world in 1996 by Martin Scorsese). The same book was also adapted by Anthony Minghella for his 1999 film, also called The Talented Mr Ripley.
The new Netflix series, written and directed by Steven Zaillian (Oscar winner for Schindler's List), is based on Highsmith's first book.
While I will admit I have not read Highsmith's books (her 1950 novel Strangers on a Train was adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock), I have been engaged with the Ripley films for some time, including Ripley's Game (2002) starring John Malkovich. No spoiler here, but Malkovich makes a surprise appearance in Zaillian's Ripley.
There is also a Wim Wenders' take on Ripley's Game called The American Friend (1977), which is on my watch list. In last year's Saltburn, Barry Keoghan plays a Ripley-like character. Emerald Fennell's film is clearly inspired by the Ripley story, but it also takes many departures from Highsmith's narrative.
So I really waited for the Netflix show.
There were many reasons why I was looking forward it, one of which was that it stars Andrew Scott -- the 'hot priest' from Fleabag, who recently shattered our hearts into small pieces with his tragic performance in All of Us Strangers (a film criminally ignored by Oscar voters).
Zaillian's eight-part slow-burning, moody and at times riveting show, with stunning black and white cinematography stands on its own. But I could not help that the other versions of the Ripley story played in my mind at the same time.
In a 1971 short French documentary, Highsmith talked about seeing a man walk on the beach in Positano, Italy. The documentary is available on the Criterion Channel.
It was in the early 1950s, 6 am.
The man looked upset.
From that image of the man who Highsmith did not speak to, she created Ripley, her most famous fictional character who impersonates his friend, is an expert at forgery and even kills to survive in the world of the rich and the famous, where he is an outsider. In the same interview, Highsmith said she did not think Ripley was very likable.
But the Ripley in Zaillian's show, as well as in Purple Noon (a very handsome Alain Delon) and The Talented Mr Ripley (an equally handsome Matt Damon) are all very likable. That is why we care so much for the character. We want Ripley to survive even when he leaves a trail of crimes -- horrific murders and forged bank checks.
A part of it has to do with Ripley's insecurities and how he is taunted by his friend -- Richard Greenleaf, better known as Dickey, played by a charismatic Johnny Flynn in the current show. Flynn is good, but possibly overshadowed by Jude Law, who played a very sexually charged Greenleaf in Minghella's film, which also had the most gay subtext among all the representations of the story.
Ripley was sent to Italy to track Greenleaf by his wealthy shipbuilding father, played in the show, by a subdued, yet tough Kenneth Lonergan, better known as a playwright and director of films such as Manchester By The Sea.
Greenleaf Senior funded Ripley's trip to Italy. But when his son shows no signs of returning to the US, he decides to cut the flow of money and cancel the large sum he had promised Ripley upon completion of the job.
That is when Ripley's life, his plans and dreams start to fall apart.
In order to pick up the pieces and stand back on his feet, Ripley starts to commit crimes: Some that take place in the heat of passion, while others are meticulously planned and executed.
We watch Andrew Scott's Ripley struggle through the mess he has created, at times finding it hard to keep it straight in his head if he is Ripley or Greenleaf, while the police are trying to track the two down and solve the complex twists in the narrative.
He jumps hotels and moves from one Italian city to another.
The show at times becomes a tourism piece for Italy where the camera lovingly strolls along the beaches, streets, old historic parts and steps of several Italian cities including Rome, Naples, Palermo, Atrani, San Remo, even Venice.
The show takes its own pace to pick up, but then when you least expect, it grabs you by the throat.
There are some delightfully dark and creepy moments. An entire episode set in Rome is dedicated to Ripley trying to dispose of a body, as he drags it down a staircase (the elevator in the building keeps breaking down) leaving a trail of blood, that looks rather gooey in dark shades of black.
We also find a lot of beauty in Zaillian's show, especially in the performances of two of the principal cast members. Dakota Fanning plays Marge Sherwood, Dickie Greenleaf's love interest who quietly suffers as Ripley gets close to her boyfriend.
Zaillian made a very unique casting choice by casting Eliot Sumner (Sting and Trudie Styler's non-binary child) to play Dickie's wealthy friend Freddie Miles. Eliot has soft, gentle features which makes his Freddie quite menacing.
In Minghella's film, Philip Seymour Hoffman was cast as Freddie and he used his deep voice and physicality to scare Ripley, and make him nervous.
But the real star of the Netflix series is its stark black and white cinematography -- the work of master cameraman Robert Elswit (Oscar winner for There Will Be Blood).
Every shot, every frame is precious.
It is film noir at its best but inspired by classic films such as Citizen Kane (1941) and The Third Man (1949).
I wish I could have spent time taking screen shots of many of the scenes on my laptop but Netflix's copyright laws do not allow that. If a coffee table book is produced of the images from the show, I will be first in the line to buy it.
