The Factory is a massive space in the Warehouse Arts District in St. Pete that houses numerous galleries and artist spaces, as well as the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, Museum of Motherhood (MOMMuseum), Fairgrounds St. Pete, and Daddy Kool Records. This past Saturday (10/14/23) was Second Saturday ArtWalk and there was a lot to see. On this page and the ones that follow are some of the highlights.
In Studio B, a temporary gallery space, was the group exhibition Soft Spoken (images above), which included artists Keith Crowley, Kenny Jensen, Alison Tirrell, Elizabeth Barenis, Raheem Fitzgerald, Kate Cummins, and Alfredo Christiano. This show remains on view by appointment with the artists.
In The Factory’s gallery space was the group exhibition Medium (images below).

Laurent Waldron "Road Killer", 2023, Latex and acrylic paint, rubber tire and "Last Rodeo" 2023, Acrylic paint, wirebrush frame
At the Florida Wildlife Corridor's gallery space Wild Space is Mickett/Stackhouse Studio's Circle of Water, a collection of paintings, drawings, and video by artists Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse continuing their explorations of environmental issues. This exhibition will remain on view until 1/13/24.
(Work by Mickett/Stackhouse Studio- "Mitigation Paintings: Green Shade Oak, Whale Pump, Mangrove Family, Mangrove Sea Wall, Green Swamp, Green Swamp Aqua Feeder, Whale Pump & Plankton, Shade Oak", Watercolor on paper)
About the above by the artists-
Mitigation Paintings further explore the ways in which natural resources can help to remedy and even forestall the damages of climate change. The swamps, whales and trees depicted are all "carbon sink," in other words they absorb CO2, among their other contributions.

Finally, a recent addition to The Factory’s spaces- The Museum of Motherhood or MoM Museum.
(Work by Amy Wolf outside Museum of Motherhood)
About the museum from their website-
MoM is the first and only exhibition and education center devoted to the art, science, and herstory of women, m/others, and families inclusive of all reproductive identities. We celebrate the work of mothers and counter narratives that have kept women less visible while educating future generations. The Museum of Motherhood is empowering women and mothers to take their rightful place in the museum world.
MoM is a living museum. We grow, evolve, and transform according to YOU – our members, volunteers, and partners. That is why we encourage great conversations, support thought-provoking exhibits, and offer resources for people to engage in activities centered around identity and culture in a safe and inclusive environment. MoM encourages a deeper understanding of the labor and investment made by those birthing and raising the next generation as well as serving to deconstruct dominant stereotypes in order to increase our overall understanding of the family experience. We are awesomely made!
MoM creates, produces, and presents visual, literary, educational, academic, and performing arts exhibits and education that celebrate, nurture and support individuals with a special emphasis on identity, experience, and community. We keep abreast of changing birth technologies and give voice to a mom-made art movement through our actions while focusing on the social, psychological, physical, and economic realities embedded in these experiences. MoM connects students, women, men, m/others and families through reproductive identity, music, art, activism, and education for cultural, economic, and social awareness. MoM acts as a safe space for healing, inspiration, and illumination.
The current featured artist is Amy Wolf, who recently created work for Dunedin Fine Art Center’s 17th Annual Wearable ART runway fashion show.

philemonchambers This year has been one for the books for me. This has honestly been the most depressed I’ve ever been (true vulnerable moment). My show getting cancelled and other projects that I was in talks with either getting cancelled or not being able to do them really took a toll on my mental health. In my head I had lost so much I became jaded and it took me awhile to get over that and realize I gained a lot, I didn’t share my struggle because I didn’t know how….I now know WHY this year had to go the way it did. I gained a new appreciation for myself and giving myself true GRACE (which I said I wanted to learn for my 29th year). I made new connections and got to witness some amazing things that I wouldn’t have otherwise if I wasn’t home. I’m thankful for everything this year ended and everything it gave. Here’s to 2024 and all that it will bring 🫂✌🏽🥂#2023recap
All the best wishes to Philemon in the new year, because he truly deserves the best!

Try a Little Tenderness - Pretty in Pink - Otis Redding - Duckie
In honor of people who have good tastes, and also because this song reminds me of Izzy Stradlin for whatever reason, and PIP came out in 1986 which was not only a great year, but especially for GNR, and because really - I just love this song, this movie, and this scene and always have.
Oh! It's the shoes! Izzy had a pair of shoes similar to Duckies. The bolo. The jacket. The cool, eclectic one of his outfit. And just the fashion at the time too. Those are a few of the reasons it reminds me of him. And just cool, classic songs give me an Izzy vibe too.
Longest run-on sentence in the world goes to @rocknrollflames on this date in history.

Sebastian Stan from Gossip Girl tells us what it’s like to work with real-life girlfriend, Leighton Meester.
Will your character Carter be back for more seasons?
I leave my options open. I like that. We’ll just have to see exactly what happens with Carter. I’d always like to come back for more, absolutely. I had no expectations or ideas when I went into audition for this role that it was going to be kept around or expand into something like this. I like the show and I’m grateful for it.
What would be your dream role?
I’m really lucky that I’ve got to do theatre in the past, I’m always looking to come back and doing some monster role on the stage at some point, that would be really cool. I can’t wait to see Jude Law in Hamlet, those things seem like such epic ideas, but they’re not. They’re not impossible. I realise a lot of people that do those – and I read up and they’re equally as scared. They’re just driven to do it. Ideally I’d love to do something of that calibre, that size. For theatre you have to be mentally and physically up to the part.
Would you ever consider a music career like girlfriend Leighton?
I’m just gonna keep that for karaoke, I think. I love karaoke. I’m some sort of closet wannabe Guns ’n’ Roses member that wasn’t born in the right time. I don’t know about music, its fun but maybe I’d like to try songwriting or producing or directing. It’d be fun to be able to call the shots on the projects you want to work on.
Did you get to meet Lady Gaga and Hilary Duff when they did cameos on Gossip Girl?
No I was never really around because my scenes never paralleled with theirs.
Which celeb would make a great cameo in the show?
Someone controversial, someone like Molly Ringwald.
Are you jealous your character wasn’t involved in the much hyped threesome this series?
No I didn’t care.
Which character would you like to see Carter hook up with?
I think ideally I would definitely want to act opposite Blair. She’s a really great character.
Do you enjoy fame?
Like Al Pacino would say: I didn’t ask to pull the trigger, but this is the business I chose. It’s in your brain for about five seconds but energy is required in much more important ways.
Have you ever been mistaken for another celeb?
I used to be picked on high school. People were like ‘you look Jason Priestly!’
And I think I was like really overweight when I was in ninth grade high school. People were telling me if Leonardo DiCaprio was to ever get fat I was probably what he would look like.
Do you feel pressure to stay in shape for Gossip Girl?
I think it’s good for an actor to keep in shape for any project. Often it’s required. Actors are athletes in a way, I learnt that in college. It’s fun and it helps you feel good.
What do you do when you’re not working?
New York is a very rich environment. Acting is a pretty unconventional life, you’re always working, in a way. You can relax and go and see a movie, but I always see a performance that inspires me. Or sitting eating and you observe people and characters. Work creeps i0n. I listen to music, I like trying new restaurants things like that.
If you weren’t an actor what would you be doing?
I think I’d make toys. Yeah, I always loved that movie Big where he works for the toy company!

Anyone who was contemporary with 90210, or who just knows, why is it an insult to say "You look like Jason Priestly"?
I want to kill every person in his high school who made fun of him for being overweight!

Hiking Journal
November 11 — Raven’s End
Yamnuska — Îyâmnathka, “flat-faced mountain” in Nakoda — has got to be one of the most iconic mountains in the Rockies. It’s known as a sacred mountain which watches over a rich medicine foraging plain. Heading into the Bow Valley it’s basically the first rock of the Rockies, watching over the wide valley through which the river, railway, new highway, and old road wind in parallel.
It was grey and overcast in that November way on this Remembrance Day, but pleasantly warm for the season, rising to a high of 11° if I remember. The plan had been at some point to do a hike with work friends but they called it in so I drove out on my own, listening to The Apache Relay and a podcast about Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha as I left the city and rolled over the foothills (I’d just finished reading it, was pretty good.) Speaking of books, that’s why Raven’s End, the eastern buttress of Yamnuska’s great cliff, lives rent-free in my head.
See, Ben Gadd is a legend. Most of the times in the last thirty years that anyone has looked up an animal, plant, mushroom, or geological formation in the Rockies, it’s probably been in Gadd’s practically biblical Handbook of the Canadian Rockies. In his full page entry on corvus corax he makes it pretty clear what his favourite clever local bird species is. If there was any further question, he also wrote Raven’s End, sort of the Albertan answer to Watership Down. I don’t know if the novel is named after the buttress or if the book named the buttress. The book was published in 2001, and I haven’t figured out if the name was used to refer to the spot on the mountain before then or if Gadd named it.
Anyway, I read this book a half-dozen times growing up. In the story, a raven wakes up with from a fall into a bush at the base of Yamnuska’s cliff with no memory aside from his name, Colin. He falls in with Zack and Molly and all the other ravens of the Raven’s End flock. He speaks with the animals of the valley, wonders about the strange two-legged visitors, and hears the voice of the wind, leading to an adventure rooted equally in spirituality and magic and in the ecology of the mountains. I can’t spoil what he does discover about his history. Go pick up a copy and find out.
Most of the trail up to Raven’s End is pretty gradual and easy. Being a public holiday, it was super busy as well. Families with a half-dozen young children, couples with two or three dogs. I had bear spray and layers and food, as if I was ready for a proper backcountry walk, but it was more bustling than most downtown streets. Little grew in the late autumn, but plenty of red wild rose hips stood out at the tips of thorny shrubs. I did chew one. Don’t tell Parks. A couple sat on the bluffs overlooking the wide reserve land in the rolling hills below and eastward, performing a ceremony with a tobacco pipe and shakers. I heard their singing washing over the woods before I actually saw them as I walked past and shared a nod.
Treeless montane aspen gave way to subalpine firs. The ground changed from dissolving brown leaves to red needle duff. A little bit of snow stuck to the ground at the elevation of Raven’s End itself, very thin and packed down, no obstacle of any sort, just a reminder that winter was near. Arguably here, but I don’t feel like arguing. More importantly: I did, in fact, see the ravens!
The start of the cliff is the usual and my planned turnaround point, but as i ate my human sandwich sitting on a rock, a group of church ladies chatting with me said that it was as worth at least going through the first slim crack of the scrambly section for the view beyond. I love climbing through cracks and dramatic rocks like this, so they were totally right.
Beyond the chimney you can look down to CMC Valley (I don’t know what this stands for, but it’s the valley behind Yamnuska; I may do that loop sometime) and, right to left, the twin peaks of Mount Wendell and the more westerly Morrowmount. Yes I switched the usual reading direction to end with MORROWMOUNT, because it sounds like something out of a fantasy novel.
Looking up at the backside of Yamnuska it look easy enough to scramble the route, it’s popular to scramble, and I do really want to do that, but not in the snow, not alone, not with a warm but forceful Chinook wind blasting from the west, and not with the last interpretive sign mentioning risk of death three times on the one sign. I turned around and descended, plunge-running past the kids and dogs back to the car and home.
